Members of the “Junkyard Dogs” robotics team from Goochland H.S. picked up robot components and learned their mission for the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition. Gathering at the Virginia Commonwealth University Student Commons on Saturday, January 5, teams from across Virginia heard they’ll have just six weeks to design and build remote-controlled robots that can fling Frisbee-type discs through goals and climb 10-foot pyramids. Students in FIRST programs not only compete for bragging rights in the international contest; they also qualify for more than $16 million in college scholarships. About 50 folks waited in line, anxious to start shopping last week, as county dignitaries, company associates and Goochland Chamber members cut the ribbon for the grand opening of the Goodwill store and donation center in Centerville last week. “Enjoy your day and spend lots of

money,” quipped District 4 Supervisor Bob Minnick, holding the giant goldent scissors, while Goodwill Chairman of the Boad Richard S. Sutton did the actual cutting. There was no need to urge people to shop, as the parking lot was full and cars lined both sides of St. Matthews Lane near the store. “The stores help fund our mission,” said Sutton after the ceremonial ribbon

cutting. Goodwill prides itself on offering jobs and training programs to serve people with obstacles to employment along with job placement services. Sutton said the location of Goodwill’s 13th store in central Virginia was ideal. “It gets us in Goochland but also puts us close enough to Henrico County to serve both areas,” he said. see Goodwill > page 4

Wright, Payne to lead School Board By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

Members of the Goochland County School Board have unanimously elected John D. Wright of District 1 to serve as the panel’s chairman for 2013. “I don’t have any sort of specific initiatives,” Wright said following his election during the Board’s Jan. 8 meeting. “I want to continue to be as transparent as possible and just try and allow everybody to do the things that they do best. That goes from the superintendent all the way down to our teachers and instructional staff, the support staff, all of that. Mostly it would be to get out of the way and let them do the good things they do every day.” Wright succeeds District 4 Member Elizabeth A. Hardy as chairman. Michael E. Payne of District 1 was elected by unanimous vote to become the vice chairman for 2013. Farrell’s voter restoration bill fails

He’s always liked history. Now 12-year old Robert Wood, a sixth grader at Goochland Middle School, is raising money so he can go across the pond to see where a lot of it took place. Robert is one of a group of 14 students who will travel to the British Isles in July as part of the People to People program, a student ambassador program established by Presisent Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. Eisenhower proposed a peaceful solution for a war-ravaged world. That solution? Give everyday citizens of different countries the opportunity to meet and get to know each other, and the result will be understanding, friendship, and lasting peace. Out of this vision came the “People to People” movement and the inspiration for People to People Ambassador Programs. Robert said he is the only student from Goochland taking part in the trip. They leave July 3 and come back on July 21. Now the problem is to raise the more than $7,000 to pay his way on the trip. “I know I’m going to be able to raise it,” said a confident Robert last week, who said he has raised $1,500 so far. There are plans for a fundraising sphaghetti dinner January 26 at Dover Baptist Church at 6 p.m and aBowl-A-Thon at Sharder Lanes in March. Robert has a jam-packed itinerary awaiting him once he leaves, with stops in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland on the agenda. In England Robert is looking forward to a ride on the largest ferris wheel in the world, the “London Eye.” In Scotland Robert’s group will be on the lookout for the Loch Ness Monster at Kingussie. “That will be pretty cool too,” said Robert. Funny thing is, Robert is not quite sure who recommended him for the trip, although he has an idea. Once recommended, he got a letter from

the People to People folks and had to go through and interview process that winnowed the almost 200 5th and 6th grader hopefuls down to 40 and then down to the final 14. Recommendations from teachers Stephanie Falconer and Elisabeth Curfman and fellow church member Sara Rowe. Whoever recommended him, Robert is appreciates their efforts on his behalf. “If I knew who it was I would be so grateful,” he said. When he’s not riding the biggest ferris wheel in the world or looking for monsters, Robert will be pretty busy with other activities, like visiting Warwick, birthplace of William Shakespeare and making a stop at Buckingham Palace. Other high spots of the trip include meeting a member of Parliament, a ferry trip across the Irish Sea to Ireland, where the group will tour Dublin an tour the remains of Blarney Castle. Christmas Mother program serves record number Over 1,000 county residents assisted in 2012 Contributed Report

The need for support from the Goochland Christmas Mother program reached an all time high for 2012. Over 1,000 adults and children from 390 families were given a happier Christmas thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers and support from the community. Of the 390 families supported, just over 125 were “adopted” to local organizations and families who provided for “their” families on behalf of the Christmas Mother. The adopting groups enable the Christmas Mother to support many more families than would otherwise be possible. More than 80 different organizations, churches and families stepped up to adopt qualified Christmas Mother recipients. Adoptions are a vital part of the association’s ability to help so many in need. “It is a huge undertaking to match up so many of our families with those who want to provide for them in the name of the Christmas

Mother” said Kit Davison, GCM President. “Our adoptions chair, Lisa Parrish, worked with a team of volunteers to match recipients with donors. The generous support from the community is so important to our helping so many in need.” From those who volunteered for shopping and wrapping, prepared boxes for delivery, collected canned goods and other donated items, to those who contributed monetarily, it was truly a community effort. Over 60 volunteers turned out to shop for recipient gifts on Shopping Day, and over 100 came to make those gifts beautiful on Wrapping Day. Forty-three bicycles and helmets were donated, as well as meals for working volunteers, and so much more. Providing for those in need who may not be able to enjoy the Christmas season is the goal of the Goochland Christmas Mother Association. The need was especially acute this past December, and through the efforts of so many, the association was able to help a record number of recipients. Goochland’s Christmas Mother program provides food, clothing, and other special gifts and support to meet the needs of each

qualified family. The work of hundreds of volunteers is required to organize the donated and purchased food and supplies, shop for and wrap gifts, and deliver the items to each family. Volunteers from other county organizations, like the Rotary, the Goochland Woman’s Club, and the Goochland Sheriff ’s Office support the effort along with many businesses, schools, families, and individuals. Volunteers are key to meeting the need, and it is a community effort that many enjoy participating in each year. A county resident is asked to serve as the Goochland Christmas Mother during the season, and 2012’s Christmas Mother was Heidi Hall. Mrs. Hall worked hard to raise funds and contributions in support of the program. As of early January, her fund raising efforts had reached $60,533. Contributions are accepted throughout the year and are still coming in [Editor’s note: see separate letter to the editor from Mrs. Hall]. Two men charged with misdemeanor larceny in a case involving items taken from a Goodwill trailer at the

Hidden Rock Park transfer station have been found not guilty. Edward C. Payne and Granville B. Parrish were arrested Aug. 6, 2012 along with Jonathan E. Payne, an employee of Goodwill after an investigation by the Goochland Sherriff ’s Office. Goochland Circuit Court

Judge Timothy K. Sanner last Friday declared the two defendants not guilty after a bench trial. Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Caudill said Monday that Jonathan Payne, son of Edward Payne, still faces felony embezzlement charges in the case.

Although disappointed that his bill to restore voting rights to non-violent felons died in a subcommittee vote, Del. Peter Farrell (R-56) remains convinced that it is the right thing to do. “It was a personal decision of mine,” said Farrell Monday after the vote in the House Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments, killing the bill for all practical purposes in the House of Delegates.

Farrell represents Louisa and parts of Goochland, Henrico and Spotsylvania counties. Farrell said he was moved by the plight of a constituent who had committed a non- violent felony but had served his time. “I had a student who had messed up,” said Farrell, who pointed out that his bill, which proposed an amendment to the Virginia Constitution, would have had to pass in two successive sessions of the General Assembly and then go before the voters in a general election for

approval. Farrell said he was surprised when Gov. Bob McDonnell made the restoration bill a center point in his recent State of the Commonwealth address. “I hadn’t talked to the governor at all,” said Farrell. “I’m disappointed but you have to respect the process,” he said after the subcommittee vote. “Sometimes it takes multiple Del. Store manager Chuck Newsome, who has 30 years experience in retail, the last two with Goodwill. “It’s nice to have a job that helps people,” said Newsome. The new Goodwill store will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Also at last week’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. James F. Lane unveiled his proposed budget for fiscal 2014. Drawing a bit of laughter, Lane said he loves the budget process. “This is the heart of where we decide the future of our school division,” he said. During his presentation, Lane’s outline of the top priorities for the FY 2014 budget are to “retain and attract high-quality teachers, administrators and staff; maintain or enhance innovative instructional programs; [and] enhance school division operational efficiency.” Lane’s proposed budget of $26,243,506 for FY 2014 is slightly higher than the FY 2013 budget of $26,177,949 and is based on a projected average daily enrollment of 2,311 students, he said. According to Lane’s numbers, the lion’s share of the proposed FY 2014 budget – $18,012,475 or 69 percent – is slated to be spent on instructional costs, with a projected per-pupil expenditure

Letters to the Editor Supervisors did the wrong thing In your editorial in the January 10th edition of The Goochland Gazette concerning the Board of Supervisors’ decision on the Orapax conditional use permit, you stated, “They did the right thing.” I respectfully disagree with your conclusion. The right thing would have been to require the applicant to perform a live fire demonstration over one or two days so that a true representation of the impact the sporting clays range may have on the surrounding neighborhood could have more readily been determined. With a live fire demonstration, either the Board would have understood the opposition to the shooting range and agreed with it, or they would have found the opposition was not justified in our concerns and approved a more comprehensive permit. Student voices concern for watershed Today Mrs. Dailey from 4-H shared with us an incredible lesson on watersheds using the Environscope. First let me explain what a watershed is. A watershed is a basin-like landform defined by high points and ridge lines that descend into tlower elevations and streams and valleys. There are some problems with our watersheds. Problems include pollution from factories, fertilizer and oil. Solutions include factories becoming more environmentally friendly, fertilizers with slow-release nitrogen and switching to new no-phosphorous fertilizer. Another Farm School for Beginners coming in February Contributed Report

The Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF) held its very first “Farm School for Beginners” course this past fall. The purpose of the program was to help beginning farmers and ranchers in Virginia to make informed farm planning decisions as part of a whole farm plan. The six week comprehensive program, which was held in Goochland County at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, introduced students to Whole Farm Planning, Marketing, Sustainable Farming Practices, and Holistic Business Management. The curriculum was developed by Virginia Tech, and is being offered as part of Virginia Beginning Farmer and Rancher Coalition Project through a grant received by VABF. Numerous established farmers and Virginia service providers participated in each of the six weekly programs, offering their own experience, feedback, encouragement and expertise to participants. Many long-time VABF members assisted with the program, including Mark Schonbeck (who taught, and indeed wrote, part of the Sustainable Farming Practices module), William Hale (who shared his experience growing organic seed and making compost), Cindy Conner (who also taught part of the Sustainable Farming Practices Module), and even Cindy’s daughter, Betsy Trice

Students toured two farms as part of the Farm School experience - Shalom Farms, which is a vegetable production farm that is a regional food security, community development project of United Methodist Urban Ministries of Richmond (UMUMR), and Keenbell Farm, a third generation farm that produces grass-fed beef, pastured pork, free range chicken and eggs. At the end of the six week program, students had the opportunity to participate in a networking event that brought experienced farmers, restaurant owners, food and farm store owners and others together in an informal social setting. No relaxing for Cadets during blowout week Benedictine finds things to work on even in one-sided games BY JP BEAUCHAMP Special Correspondent

The Benedictine basketball team is known for playing one of the toughest schedules in the Central Region. But still there are times when the competition is not quite even on the court against the No. 1 ranked Cadets. Last week was once such span. Monday brought a 76-51 run past Amelia Academy and Tuesday an 87-51 pounding of Norfolk Christian. Yet, the most lopsided victory came on Saturday night, when Benedictine devastated Pope John Paul The Great 74-25. It was a case of the Cadets being unable to provide much mercy as Coach Robert Churchwell III cleared his bench early in the third quarter after the Cadets took a 57-15 lead. Therefore, the question arises, how does the team continue to improve facing a vast disparity in talent on the court. “One of the things as a staff that we try to impart to these guys is that everyday you play against the game of basketball,” Churchwell said. “It doesn’t matter who your opponent is. Some teams are better than others, but you always play against the game of basketball. We have to train ourselves to play one way. One way. That’s what we are attempting to do. We’re not quite there yet, but the boys are getting better.” In the case of John Paul, the Cadet substitutes proved equal against the Wolves’ starters. As such, Churchwell believes it is important for the players who see little time during the big games to log important minutes. “We were fortunate to be

able to get all our guys in,” he said. “A lot of guys got some playing time. That’s the major thing because sometime down the stretch, it only takes one play and somebody that hasn’t played in a while has to step up.” Forward L.G. Gill only logged 14 minutes against John Paul but finished the night with nine points and eight rebounds. The goal for Gill and his teammates does not change in the runaway games. “The same thing that we do in a normal game,” he said. “Every game is important. We want to come out and be strong in every game; so even if the game is a blowout or whatever, we still have to play hard. Just stay focused on not underestimating your opponent; just going hard the whole game.” Robert Johnson, an L.C. Bird product, had another big night against the Wolves, scoring 21 points on 7-of-11 field goals and 5-of-8 3-pointers while dishing out four assists and coming up with two steals in only 17 minutes of play.

“I wouldn’t say I was hitting a little bit more,” he said. “I got a rhythm going early; so I just tried to stay hot and keep shooting when I had the opportunity. Likewise, Johnson deferred his successful night to a teammate. “Nick [Coppola] was looking for me so I applaud him for doing that,” Johnson said. “I just tried to shoot the ball. I think he’s a very good point guard. He’s a Division I point guard. One of the best things about Nick is that he knows your strengths; so, he gets the ball where he knows you can score. I think he’s a good point guard for distributing it that way.” For Johnson, there is work to do even when the team leads by substantial margins. “Execution,” he said. “At that time is a perfect opportunity to run your sets and get the type of looks you want. That’s the time when, if we have a new defense to practice, we’ll try it out and see how it is; so I think execution is the main thing.” The one player who was

looking to make the most of the week was guard Raymon Minor (Patrick Henry), who has been going through a slump of late after averaging 12.6 points per game early in the season. Minor finished the night with four points, one assist, seven rebounds and one steal against John Paul. “[My] offense didn’t really go that well,” Minor said. “I know I did a lot better on the defensive end, though. I got a lot of stops. I had seven rebounds tonight otherwise. I know I wasn’t shooting that well, so I know how to crash the boards and help the team out. That’s what I had to do tonight.” Part of Minor’s slide may be contributed to making the adjustment from being the standout at Patrick Henry to a role player at Benedictine this season. “At PH I was like the only player that could really score,” he said. “I was like the main player. When I got here, I know I wasn’t the main player. I’ve got a lot of people around

me that’s good and stuff; and I like that. And they have a winning record.” For Churchwell, the week was a good bounce-back week after the Cadets suffered their first and only loss of the season against Brunswick on Jan. 5, 60-55. “It happens,” Churchwell said. “Obviously it happens. I thought it was a good game. Brunswick has a really good team. That was our first time seeing them. They have some good players. Both teams shot poorly. We just shot a little worse. But that’s ok. It’s a long season and we’ve got to bounce back quickly.” Gill took the loss to Brunswick hard, but rebounded along with his team. “It was kind of devastating, the loss; but we got back on our feet. We’re just going forward now.” Minor concurred. “[The recent loss to Brunswick] disappointed everybody from school officials to fans. It probably disappointed us the most. We don’t think they were a better team; but we came out slow. So that’s one of the things that our coach talked to us about coming out and playing hard

and keeping the pace for the whole thirty-two minutes. So, that’s what we try to do now.” On Tuesday night (after press deadlines), Benedictine faced one of their biggest challenges of the season hosting a Cape Henry squad ranked among the state’s best. “That’s a good team,” Minor said. “They play on ESPN (Saturday)… Tuesday we’re going to have to come out real hard: defense, rebounding and stuff; keep them off the boards.” Regardless of who the Cadets are playing, Churchwell said some things never change. “We just prepare to play against the game of basketball,” he said. “Like every other team, we want to win every time we step on the floor, and so that’s how we prepare. Slow start dooms Bulldogs in battle for first By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The first week back after a long Christmas vacation is always difficult for students, and basketball teams. The Goochland girls’ basketball team returned to action with a rough win over Randolph-Henry and followed that up with a victory at Buckingham on Tuesday night to up their Jefferson District record to 6-0. “We shook off the Christmas rust with that win,” said Bulldog coach Sarah Voyack. Last Wednesday, Goochland traveled to Powhatan, as the girls took their non-conference schedule on the road for a match up with the neighboring Indians. Although the Bulldogs lost in a lopsided 43-19 decision, Voyack said it was just what the team needed with a big contest against district foe Amelia looming to end the busy week. “We don’t see a team like Powhatan in our district,” she said. “Leading up to Amelia, we needed a team like Powhatan,

with the aggressive players, defense and looking to push the ball in transition.” That set the stage for the first matchup of the season with first place on the line, hosting the Raiders,. Amelia came out running and their aggressive defense overwhelmed the slow-starting Bulldogs to mount a 15-5 first quarter lead. Goochland returned the favor in the second quarter. Khayla Leabough stroked a 3pointer to open the second, cutting the lead to 15-10, and the Bulldogs began a comeback that featured the team running at full throttle. “It was probably the best quarter of basketball we’ve played all season,” Voyack said. With a minute remaining in the first half, Goochland’s Tammara Taylor scored on the inside and was fouled. Taylor’s free throw capped a 15-3 run and the Bulldogs were up 2018 at the break. Both teams utilized the 3point shot to open the second half and Amelia regained the

lead, holding it until the end of the period, 34-29. The Bulldogs drifted further behind as the outside shooting went cold in the fourth quarter, but made a final run that came up short 46-39. “Except for four or five minutes, I felt like we really played well and as a team tonight,” Voyack said. The coach also felt the game was a good lesson for the next time the two teams meet later this month. “We were settling for outside shots in the fourth quarter,” she said. “We don’t need to do that.
