“I call it corporate kindness,” said Elk Hill Executive Director Michael Farley last week, after his school received a $150,000 grant from Capital One at a ceremony at the Hippodrome in Richmond. Elk Hill was one of four recipients, all non-profits, at the

Other recipients were the Peter Paul Development Center, project: HOMES and the YMCA of Greater Richmond. “We’ve had a very nice partnership with Capital One over the last 10 years,” said Farley, who said Elk Hill would use the money for a renovated swimming pool and shade pavilion, as well as more scholarships for students. Founded 42 years ago, Elk Hill provides group homes for boys, schools, summer camps and other services for troubled students. The Investing for Good Award spotlights the best direct service models that are serving people

in need and building strong neighborhoods in the Greater Richmond region. The Award will provide two years of grant funds and intensive volunteer support to build the capacity of area nonprofits to serve the needs of low to moderate income communities. The grant provides $100,000 in the first year and $50,000 in the second year, pending the results achieved in year one. The contest asked the entrants to write a story, headline and draw a picture to illustrate it. Ellery wrote about her dog, a Border Collie named Jagger. “When my brother and I play outside Jagger moves with us,” wrote Ellery, whose wining story was “Local Border Collie moves like Jagger.” Her mom Amanda, said Ellery and her brother Gavin, 5, thought the song “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 was written about their dog when they first heard it over a year ago. “This is a song about our dog Jagger,” Amanda recalled them saying when they first heard the song on the radio. Ellery said she knows her dog has the same name as Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger. Ellery won a one year subscription to the Goochland Gazette along with a gift certificate to Target stores, crayons and mechanical pencils for future writing projects. Congratulations, Ellery!

Three community leaders, Bryan Rhode, Lisa Luck, and Neil Spoonhower, have been elected to the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Board of Directors. The new members bring a wealth of expertise in organizational development and leadership to support GFCFS in serving more than 1,200 local families and children with basic human needs, medical and dental care. “The diverse set of ideas and knowledge the new board members bring to GFCFS are essential to our goal of being a high-performing, inclusive organization,” said Keith Reynolds, Board President “I look forward to Bryan, Lisa and Neil contributing to the continued success of our organization.” The GFCFS Board of Directors is a select group of individuals, from a variety of backgrounds, responsible for setting policy and overseeing the organization’s general well being. A newly elected slate of officers will lead GFCFS in 2013 including Keith Reynolds, President, Tony Ponsiglione, Vice President, Andy McLean, Treasurer, and Elizabeth Rider, Secretary. Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’ mission is to provide access to health care and basic human services to Goochland community residents who are in need of assistance. Goochland schools budget ready for board approval By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

Just about all of the kinks have been worked out of the proposed budget for Goochland County Public Schools for fiscal year 2013-2014. Superintendent Dr. James F. Lane’s proposed FY 2014 budget of $26,185,081 is slightly higher that the FY 2013 budget of 26,177,949. “I’m really excited about the budget you have put together,” District 4 School Board Member Elizabeth A. Hardy told Lane during last week’s budget workshop and public hearing at the county administration building. During his budget update, Lane said that about 83 percent of the proposed FY 2014 budget will pay for salaries and benefits, which leaves about 17 percent

for discretionary spending. The FY 2014 budget is based on an average daily membership or enrollment of 2,311 students, Lane said, with a per-pupil expenditure of about $11,249. Perhaps the most important detail to be worked out in the FY 2014 budget is in the area of providing benefits for part-time employees. “I think the question is, in the superintendent’s proposed budget he is continuing to offer part-time benefits to part-time employees and so the discussion we’re having is whether to take that money, which he projected at about $80,000 in [the] next fiscal year [and] not offer parttime employees part-time benefits and instead take that money and finish Phase 1 of the [Career and Technical Education] initiative….,” said John L. Hall heartedly endorsed the School Board’s proposal to increase the number of slots for Goochland students who attend the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School from four to five per matriculating grade based on the proposed FY 2014 budget. “It’s an incredible program and the fact that it’s available here locally and it is a great opportunity for the kids in our county,” said Hall. W. Kevin Hazzard, who represents District 2 on the School Board, is vice chairman of the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Board. All students who wish to attend Maggie Walker must apply for acceptance, he said. “There’s an application

process followed by a battery of tests that you take,” Hazzard said. “We’ve [Goochland] increased the slots from four per matriculating class to seven, which means we’ll go from a total enrollment of 16 to 28 over a period of four years. Goochland has no problem filling its slots, Hazzard said. “There have been times in the past where we didn’t, but now for example, this past year we had 23 applicants and I would say at least half of them were highly qualified, but we could only matriculate four,” he said. Hazzard agreed with Hall that Maggie Walker is one of the top high schools in the country. “If you look at the rankings, it’s always in the top 10 or 12 in the nation,” Hazzard

Winter sets in Just when it seemed like I could get through the season with one delivery from the fuel oil company we contract with, Old Man Winter blew into town this month in full force, taking nighttime temperatures down into the teens. He even brought snow, twice, to the area. Lucky for us, we already had plenty bread and milk! So much for the global warming theories I’d been counting on to lighten the heating bill this winter. We spent Thanksgiving week with my son in sunny Southern California, where the weather is always, well, sunny and the need for an overcoat never makes itself felt. There were roses blooming in his front yard when we left for the airport to fly home. Some folks like it but give me the change of seasons anytime, with the variety of weather and the life cycle of the flora and fauna. Kind of helps you keep track of the passage of time when you can figure out that it’s winter and not still summer or fall. Here in Goochland last week saw a local private school that does an excellent job with troubled youth receive a $150,000 grant from Capital One through its “Investing for Good Awards.” (See our story on Elk Hill’s award on page 1).

And one of the county’s best known nonprofit service organizations, the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, announced the election of its new board. I am always cheered when private enterprise gives back to the society from which it derives its success, as in the case of Capital One and when charitable agencies such as GFCFS continue their vital work to improve the quality of life in the community. What gives pause however, is the seemingly ever-growing behemoth in Washington, D.C., where the prevailing wisdom seems to lean ever more toward increasing the size, scope and intrusiveness of the federal government, at least under the current administration. But the good and necessary work of government at the local and state level -- where it is closest to the needs of the citizens -- is vital. ----This weekend we were saddened to hear of the passing of James T. Taylor, who served for many years on the Goochland Board of Supervisors, including several stints as Chairman of the Board. Look for our story on Mr. Taylor in next week’s edition. -Ken Odor

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

As a concerned member of the Goochland community, I wanted to voice my opposition to the recent decision that was made by the Board of Supervisors regarding the Clay Shooting Range on the Orapax property right off of Route 6. My husband and I made a decision four years ago to move to this area to raiser our family. We wanted our children to grow up in an area where they could experience life in a rural setting and all that it has to offer. We wanted to them to spend their days exploring the great outdoors, hearing the sounds of the wildlife, and becoming a part of the Heidi Hall community. as a stay-at-home mom, we knew that the house that we purchased here in Goochland would be our investment for our future and that of our children’s. The decision to approve the Clay Shooting Range affects all that. Our level of enjoyment is significantly decreased when we are hearing continual shots being fired. The community at large is affected because everyone within hearing distance is now unhappy that they have to live here. Our home, our investment for the future, decreases in value, because who really wants to purchase a house within hearing distance of a shooting distance when they could purchase one somewhere else? I am disappointed by those we elected to serve our community on the Board of Supervisors. I will be more actively involved in the next

Writer reports on March for Life Friday, 1/25, I attended the annual March for Life in Washington, D. and was inspired by the sight of such a mass of people braving frigid, snowy weather to stand up for the sanctity of every human life. One would have had to see the vast throng marching shoulder to shoulder, filling Constitution Ave from the Mall up to the Supreme Court Building to believe that the estimate of 400,000+ could be accurate.

www.goochlandgazette.com Yes, the pro-life movement in America is alive and well. The most encouraging part of the experience was seeing that the majority were young people. These college and high school students (and younger ones) understand that they have lost brothers, sisters, cousins and potential friends to abortion. They also know, with the help of the science of ultrasound, that it is a real human being growing in the womb. I believe these energetic, idealistic youth are the hope of our country. This year’s march commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. Since 1973, over 55 million children have been killed in this country, which was founded on the principle of the unalienable Godgiven right to life. Also, the lives of countless mothers and fathers who have aborted their children have been devastated by feelings of guilt and regret. Today, the

most dangerous place for a child is not in a classroom or movie theater, where he might be killed by an “assault” weapon wielded by a lunatic, but in his mother’s womb. We hear nonstop about all the problems facing this nation. I believe the root cause of all our problems is that of moral decline and I do not believe we will find lasting solutions without addressing this. We would do well to start by abolishing the government-sanctioned killing of babies. My prayer is that we would all repent of our part in this atrocity whether it be having an abortion, advising or aiding others to have one, electing leaders whom we know will promote abortion or just sitting back and saying and doing nothing. Taylor James T. Tayor Sr., 69, passed away on January 25, 2013 surrounded by his family at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was born on November 14, 1943 in Middlesboro, Kentucky to George and Julia Taylor. James grew up in Hancock County, Tennessee. He graduated from Hancock Country High School in 1960. After school, he moved to Goochland County, Virginia.

James was preceded in death by his parents, George and Julia Taylor. James is survived by his devoted wife, Mildred; son, James “Tommy” Jr. and wife, Charmayne; daughter, Cheryl along with Greg Manning; his brothers, Leroy and Jerry (Cathy); his sister, Georgia Roberts (Jim); and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Raegan and Emma. James also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, other family and friends. The family would also like to express gratitude to Lucy Taylor, David Taylor, Jimmy and Shirley Blevins, and Kirby Kernan for their unerring care and support. This year marks the 100th Birthday of the American Cancer Society and the Goochland Relay for Life event will celebrate in a grand style with their annual event June 7-8 at Goochland Elementary School. This marks 19 years that the Goochland community has sponsored a Relay event and this year’s theme is a ‘Century of Hope’, each team will decorate to commemorate an ACS theme or a decade of the past 100 years. Vickie Dunn, 2013 chairperson, is excited about leading the event. “I get to continue a great tradition and introduce a few new ideas. And get new people involved!” The planning committee is comprised of seasoned Relay volunteers which means many sponsors, community and church groups are already being contacted for support and involvement. framed photo of some of her students using the violins hangs on a wall at Hope Thrift. “We see our store as a ministry to our customers and our community,” says Renee Norton, the store’s manager, “and we’re privileged to have great things for sale at great prices.” Hope Thrift’s philosophy is spelled out on a small placard near the cash register, which says, “If you feel you got a good deal, you have been blessed by God. If you feel you got an ‘OK’ deal, then you have blessed God’s kingdom.” That approach has served the store well as it marks its second anniversary this month. Located in the Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center on Patterson, Hope Thrift is an outreach of Hope Church, which is also on Patterson, just over the Goochland County line. “It’s been a great ride for the first two years,” says Mary Beth Blake-Heath, one of the store’s founders. “We’ve seen needs met, relationships built, and lives changed in so many ways. It’s just a miracle.” Every item for sale at Hope Thrift has been donated, and all proceeds support the mission and ministries of Hope Church. The store is staffed by one paid manager and over 200 volunteers. Community outreach is a focus for the store. “We’ve been able to form some great partnerships,” says Norton. “In two years, Hope Thrift has become a lot of different things to a lot of different people.” Among those people are

the young men and women of the Skills Development Center, which works with individuals with autism. SDC members come weekly to learn job skills. The store has also worked with special needs students from several local schools, and employees gather supplies for underprivileged students at the beginning of each school year. Guidance counselors at nearby schools also have Hope Thrift vouchers they can give to needy families. One Saturday each month is designated Ministry Saturday, with the day’s proceeds all going to a single ministry. Ministry Saturdays have so far benefited Young Life of Goochland; missionaries working in Asia, Europe and Africa; Embrace Richmond; and First Light Counseling, a practice run by Goochland resident Brenda Murray.

The last week of each month, called Dollar Days, is also an excellent chance to pick up some clothing bargains. From Tuesday through Saturday of that week, all clothes are $1, unless otherwise marked. Hope Thrift has also become a popular spot for high school students to fulfill community service hours, both voluntary and court-ordered. “We love having the teens in the store,” says BlakeHeath. “They bring an energy and enthusiasm that our customers really pick up on.” Of the teens who come to do court-ordered community service, Blake-Heath says, “Who hasn’t done something they wish they could have a do-over on? We’ve all got days we’d like to forget. We’re glad to have them, and I love working with them.” The store will pick up and

deliver large items within a 15mile radius. “We’ve been given a lot of nice things from estate sales, other stores, and folks that are moving or downsizing,” says Barry Isenberg, another of the store’s founders. “It has been a great way to be a service to our community.” Among the items at Hope Thrift are furniture, kitchenware, books, glassware, clothing for all ages, sporting goods, toys, electronics, framed art, jewelry, and seasonal items. Many are cleaned, polished, sorted and priced by John and Pam Cobb, two more of the store’s founders. Hope Thrift is open Tuesday through Friday 10-6 and Saturday 9-5. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. The Goochland boys’ basketball team heads into the final two weeks of the regular season looking to complete their preseason goals and claim a James River District title. The Bulldogs (8-4, 6-2 JRD) currently sit alone in second place among district squads and will need to win out to claim the top seed heading into the post season tournament. However, it won’t be easy. Postponements due to weather crunched an already packed schedule forcing Goochland to play six games over the final 11 days of the regular season. The postponements caused the cancelation of some nondistrict games which would have forced the Bulldogs to squeeze in eight games over a 13-day span. While Goochland coach Preston Gordon would have liked to play the games to

give his team more experience, he also did not want to drain them. “It takes a wear and tear on your kids’ bodies and their legs,” he said. “You try to have the kids fresh and ready to go for their district games.” Furthermore, the remaining district games will be some of their toughest. On Tuesday, Goochland hosts Randolph-Henry (3-13, 1-8) followed by a Wednesday night home match-up against Bluestone. After that the schedule really gets interesting with back-to-back games that will determine their final standing. This Friday Goochland travels to league leading Buckingham (15-1, 10-1) for what will most likely be the biggest game of the season for both squads. The Bulldogs handed the Knights, then ranked by MaxPreps.com as the No. 1 team in the state among Group A, Division 2

teams, their only loss in a 61-57 win at Goochland on Jan. 8. “I told our guys after we played a couple games, we hold the key to our future,” Gordon said. “If we want to be successful, we can be successful. I we want to be mediocre, that’s also a possibility, but it’s about how hard we compete and practice and how we come out and play every night. “We really got it through out guys’ heads that we can be a very special team but we’ve got to play together and take care of the ball,” Gordon said. “That’s what we did against Buckingham.” The win also changed the mindset of the Bulldogs. “I think it was an eye-opener to our players. ‘Hey, if they’re No. 1 and we knocked them off at home, guess what, we can be pretty good as well’,” Gordon said. “I think some things are starting to set in and some-

The Bulldogs then wrap things up with a trip to Bluestone on Feb. 6 and their regular season finale as host to Amelia on Friday, Feb. 8. Gordon said, like every team, his squad has battled the flu bug but they should be back

Forward Nathan Adams suffered a back injury when he ran into a wall at Central Lunenburg at the beginning of January, but he returned to action last week. “We’re okay, chemistry’s there and it’s starting to come back with Nathan Adams,” Gordon said. “He adds another offensive threat with us down low. He brings a whole lot of energy for us.” Gordon also feels that point guard C.J. Johnson has improved in limiting turnovers and distributing the ball when he no longer needed to lead the team in scoring. The coach also believes 6-

3 center Josh Hayden turned a corner at the beginning of the month when he scored 23 points against Powhatan. “He started knocking down some threes for us,” Gordon said. “Ever since then he’s been more consistent for us shooting the ball outside.” The play of Hayden is key to the team’s success because he presents a difficult matchup for opponents. “He’s got a good shot from the parameter,” Gordon said. “With his size, a lot of players in our district don’t expect that. He’s got a little sneakiness to him with his athletic ability.” All Goochland boys’ basketball games are broadcast on WEZE 100.5 FM.

Goochland Riders recognized with awards The Virg inia Championship Hare Scramble Series (VCHSS) conducted their Awards Banquet for the 2012 season at the Williamsburg Hilton on Saturday, Jan. 12. Averaging more than 350 riders during each event in the 2012 season, Goochland youth won their fair share. Five Goochland teens were presented trophies for the races which were held at sites all over the Commonwealth of Virginia. They competed in 15 motocross hare scramble events from March thru November of 2012. Chris Scriber of Sandy Hook came away with the Youth Grand Champion Award, as well as placing 5th in the 200B Class. Jordan Shifflett of Gum Spring placed 4th in the Super Mini 12-13 Class, and his brother Hunter Shifflett won 12th place in the 4 Stroke C Class.
