Testing the School Board New elementary school tops CIP wish list By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

School Board members, from left, Kevin Hazzard, Chairman John Wright, John Lumpkins and Beth Hardy work on fitting upside down puzzle pieces together during a presentation at last week’s School Board meeting by fourth graders in Joe Beasley and Crystal Demas’ classes from Goochland Elementary School of “The Leader in Me” model in use at their school. Based on Steven Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” the school hopes to use the program to create leaders. The puzzle exercise was designed to demonstrate Habit 2 - Begin with the end in mind. Eventually the board members were allowed to turn the pieces over and even look at a picture of the completed puzzle, making their task easier.
Group will support county parks Contributed Report
A new, private, nonprofit group has been formed to support Goochland County’s parks. “Friends of Goochland Parks” emerged from a group of volunteers originally organized as a Task Force of the Goochland Chamber of Commerce, who have served as champions of Tucker Park since its inception. Under its new name, the group’s revised purpose is to enrich the recreational and leisure opportunities afforded to Goochland County, Virginia citizens and visi-
tors through its park system. “This amazing group of volunteers has worked for over five years to re-unite our residents and visitors with the natural beauty of the James River by creating a site that protects, preserves and showcases the natural, geographic and historic elements of Tucker Park,” said Beth C. Moore, first President of Friends of Goochland Parks. “In collaboration with Goochland County’s Board of Supervisors, Economic Development Authority and Recreation Advisory Commission along with local businesses and key
donors, the Tucker Park Task Force volunteers have created a one-mile scenic walking trail and constructed a 35-space, handicapped accessible parking lot.” “However, we recognized that in order to achieve the level of enhancements that are ultimately planned for the park, we needed a more formalized approach to fundraising and community education,” she continued. “In establishing a separate 501(c)3 organization, we will now be able to raise and receive see Parks > page 3
The Goochland School Board’s top priority is dealing with elementary school needs, according to a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) adopted at last week’s regular monthly meeting. Assistant Superintendent of Operations Peter M. Gretz’s presentation of the proposed CIP sparked lengthy discussion at the end of the meeting. While the board was initially leaning toward placing a new elementary school at the top of its wish list, following by the option of an extensive renovation of Goochland Elementary School, a new development emerged when it became known that Rudlin Torah on Patterson Ave. is on the market at a tempting price. And since the county’s debt service would likely not allow financing a new elementary school for some time, the board was intrigued by the possibility of acquiring Rudlin Torah to use in the interim. “I think it’s hard for a school board to ignore a discussion on it,” said Goochland School Superintendent James F. Lane about Rudlin Torah. Gretz showed photos and diagrams of the facility to the board, which discussed how it might be used. “It’s primary and only use is as an educational facility,” said School Board Chairman John D. Wright, District 5. District 2 School Board member W. Kevin Hazzard said he favored smaller elementary schools located closer to where students live as opposed to a larger school located in the center of the county. Concern over the ability of Randolph Elementary School to absorb any increase in new students was the backdrop for the board’s placing elementary needs at the top of its list.
“The cold hard reality is that debt service isn’t going to ease up for us to build a new elementary school until 2016 to 2018,” said Hazzard during the discussion. “If it can relieve us that should we should do,” said District 1 School Board member and Vice-Chairman Michael E. Payne, of the possibility of acquiring the Rudlin Torah facility. Second on the list of the board’s priorities was the need for a new transportation facility with the third priority being providing adequate capacity for Career and Technical Education. A new elementary school would cost about $23 million, according to the presentation, while a renovation of Goochland Elementary School could cost about $14 million. But purchase of Rudlin Torah could be accomplished for considerably less and provide room for as many as 300 additional elementary school students. “The Rudlin Torah Academy facility offers a unique opportunity and the Board would like to continue to explore the possibility of purchasing it. Further estimation of capacity and program use, as well as a thorough analysis of costs/benefits are necessary. The Board requests that this project be included in the CIP, but not at the expense of new construction,” wrote Lane in his transmittal letter accompanying the CIP proposal to the Board of Supervisors. The purchase of what has been called the Oilville facility as a replacement for the existing bus garage was seen as the best solution to priority two, at a cost of about $1.2 million. The board’s preference for expanded room for CTE space would be a new wing at Goochland High School but a second option would be renovating the Specialty Center at Goochland Elementary School.

A 16-year-old junior at Goochland High School, Jasmine Coles has been selected as student liaison to the Goochland County School Board. Although she has a rigorous academic course load that includes Honor and Advanced Placement classes and is involved in numerous extracurricular activities, Coles believes she is up to the task of student liaison. “I’ve always been allured to challenges and leadership positions and I thought this would be a great opportunity to experience a different kind of leadership role,” she said. “I’m excited about learning how the School Board approaches different topics and decisions while learning about challenges that take place outside and inside of school and ways to overcome them – how to make a difference.” Coles maintains a 4.4
grade point average while being dually enrolled at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and has been on the A/B honor roll since third grade. Some of the groups that she participates in are the high school dance team, Spanish Club, National Honor Society and the marching band, which she said is her favorite extracurricular activity. She also has volunteered at Tuckahoe Physical Therapy. Coles said her favorite course is chemistry “because you have the chance to learn why things react the way they do. You’re able to solve challenging equations and like I said, I love a challenge.” Managing a busy schedule is a full-time job, but Coles has become adept at budgeting her time. “I have to discipline myself when I study because not everything comes naturally to me,” she said. “On average, I study for about six and a half hours every night, including regular breaks every 20
minutes and three 15-minute breaks. I also have to plan and organize everything – tests, practices, meetings.” As if that weren’t enough, Coles has maintained perfect attendance since kindergarten. “My mother, Lisa Coles, is my main motivation,” she said. “She always pushes us [she and her four siblings] to pursue the best of our education and in order for us to do that we need to be at school every day. There have been times where I thought I would miss a day, but my mother always made sure that I made it for the minimum time required so I wouldn’t be counted absent for a full day.” Her goal is to become a cardiovascular surgeon, Coles said. “I was inspired back in middle school when my health class was watching a video about a heart attack,” she said. “It showed animations of what happens during see Coles > page 4

Board okays permit for River Road restaurant By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Speaker after speaker strode to the microphone at the Feb. 5 Goochland Board of Supervisors meeting. Their purpose? To encourage the supervisors to grand a conditional use permit (CUP) to the operators of the Portico Restaurant at 12506 River Road. Before the public hearing began, the applicants’ attorney requested a seven year term for the CUP, which staff had originally set at five years for the restaurant, which opened in 2011 after extensive renovation. When it was all over, the supervisors voted unanimously to extend the term of the permit to 10 years. The restaurant, operated by Paolo and Rhonda Randazzo, was previously the site of the Edible Garden and before that the English Garden. Both had operated under conditional use permits, since the site is zoned A-2, which requires such a permit for
a restaurant. Tuckahoe Plantation owner Tad Thompson said he remembered when the building was a country store with a pot-bellied stove and called the current restaurant “a terrific community resource. “Go by and have a meal, advised Howard Jenkins of Randolph Square. “I’ll think you’ll like it. Betsy Rawls, who lives on Blair Road said it “makes all the difference in the world not having to go all the way into Richmond to eat. Sue Thompson said she “thought she would cry when the English Garden closed and urged the supervisors to grant a 10 year CUP. The supervisors were convinced and voted to extend the length of the requested CUP to 10 years and added an additional hour to the allowable hours for depositing trash in the dumpster behind the restaurant to 10 p.m. Their vote was met with a round of applause.

a heart attack and I remember being enchanted by the animation of the heart. I thought it was incredible, so I started researching different careers involving the heart and watching surgeries taking place on the heart. Then not long after I had to go to a children’s cardiologist to take a test. When I saw the machinery, I was captivated by the images that appeared. I thought it was the most amazing thing that had ever existed. That’s when I decided that I wanted to do something with the heart.” Coles attended her first School Board meeting last week, adding that she has been briefed on what her role as student liaison will entail. “Yes, I have been told the basic expectations however I will be attending some training sessions that will explain the expectations in depth,” she said. “I’m also expecting for there to be times where I will be asked to report back to the students of Goochland High School.” Serving as the student liaison will enhance her education and better prepare her for the future, Coles said. “The courses that I’m taking are challenging and require ded-
ication, commitment, and management,” she said. “Therefore taking the most challenging courses that demand that I acquire those skills will ensure that I’m able to use those skills in college and being the student liaison reinforces those skills in a different pattern. It enables me to speak not only my opinion but the mass opinion of the student body.” Dr. James F. Lane, superintendent of GCPS, believes that Coles brings the right combination of academic achievement and success outside the classroom that will serve her well in her role with the School Board. “We are so happy that Jasmine was approved as our student liaison to the School Board,” he said. “We believe that she is the perfect representative of our student body as she is not only an excellent student, but she is involved in a wide range of activities in our school. I think she is going to be a huge asset to our board. We will be able to hear directly from students about their thoughts regarding how we can continue to maximize and ignite individual student potential as we strive to have the best schools in Virginia. This experience will be a huge time commitment for her and we appreciate her enthusiasm.”

Chase ends in charges for county man By Jeremy Slayton Richmond Times-Dispatch
A Goochland County man is facing six charges after a highspeed chase Sunday morning that started in Goochland County and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour before ending in a crash on Interstate 95 in Richmond. Virginia State Police reported that Mario Davis, 30, of Maidens, Va., has been charged with felony eluding police and possession of a firearm after being a convicted felon. Davis, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, also has been charged with misdemean-
or obstruction of justice, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving by speed and failure to wear his safety belt, police reported. Police said Davis was driving a 1998 Ford Contour that failed to stop for a state trooper who was attempting to pull the vehicle over for reckless driving at 83 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone The incident started about 9:20 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 64 near the Rockville exit. The driver failed to stop and continued eastbound on I-64 at speeds of more than 100 mph, police reported.
Troopers pursued the car onto I-95 southbound, where the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the road, striking a guardrail. The car then crossed back across the southbound lanes striking the center jersey wall and hitting two state police vehicles near the Virginia Commonwealth University/Broad Street exit about 9:30 a.m. Two lanes of southbound I-95 were closed after the crash. Once again, voter ID Once again, a photo ID bill has passed. And, once again, politics is overshadowing the obvious benefits of a common sense electoral reform. Over Democratic objections, the Virginia Senate has passed a law requiring Virginia voters to produce a photo ID before casting their ballots. In 2014, not this year. The House of Delegates will likely pass the same bill and, should Gov. Bob McDonnell sign it, only a court ruling will prevent this sensible measure from becoming law. An earlier bill that would have made changes in a voter identification law that would have taken effect this year died in the Senate when Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling broke a tie and voted against it, a move that surprised some observers, but, on reflection, seems like a wise decision. With another election just eight months away and significant changes having been made in voter identification requirements last year, it seems prudent not to make any change this year. But it still seems reasonable to require voters to prove they are who they say they are. Just as it always has. And the bill just passed will do just that. Those without photo ID can get one from their local registrar for free. But, once again, many are lamenting the terrible effects that such a requirement will have on voters and calling the bill an effort

to suppress voter turnout, which is hilarious, since one group the opposition regularly cites as likely to be discouraged from voting is senior citizens, who are normally more likely to vote for conservative candidates. So, is the GOP trying to suppress the vote among one of its core constituencies? I think not. The other, equally ludicrous idea is the ever repeated cry that voting should be made easier. Well, perhaps folks should just be able to phone in their vote, or maybe vote via their hand-held electronic device. Or maybe carrier pigeon, I don’t know. But I do know this. I’ve heard enough credible anecdotal reports of voter fraud to believe that a reasonable requirement to identify oneself as a valid registered voter in the district and precinct one casts their ballot is a very good thing. Once signed into law, the current bill should bring the issue, at least in Virginia, to a close. Propagandists may persist in their efforts to use the issue to demonize the GOP but the Commonwealth will be well served by this requirement. Starting in 2014, voters will come to the polls, show who they are, cast their ballots and all citizens can be more confident that the results are a true reflection of the will of the people.

Letters to the Editor Shame on editor for encouraging division While I have enjoyed reading the Gazette in the past I wish to take exception to the Feb. 7, “Letter’s Editorial.” Why are you “baiting” the paper’s readership to object to progress of a Christian school in the county? A school that has been a good neighbor and positive influence on countless members of this community. Would it not be better to help welcome them than to attempt to create further division and ill will? Shame on you for encouraging the undermining of good people’s efforts. Gary Morgan Maidens
Writer will use the old fashioned seeds This is the best time of the year. The seed catalogs are out and everyone can enjoy planning and dreaming and carefully considering
their summer garden. Optimism runs high. Foolproof plans are conceived to foil the deer this season. Meanwhile the deer stare at us from the treeline with plans of their own. This year we’re going to design a better fence. The game begins again. For the last several years we have chosen to plant seeds that are nongenetically modified. This seed is referred to as NGMO seed. The garden that results is fabulous. And we don’t have to wonder what the heck has been done to the seed that produced the vegetable or whether sometime down the road scientists will tell us that it is recommended that children or pregnant women avoid eating transgenic food. Monsanto Company, produces 90% of global transgenic seed. This seed has been modified by scientists who utilize a method that inserts bacteria and viruses into the DNA of a plant seed or animal to create a desired result. 86% of corn and 93% of soybeans farmed in the US are engineered strains. Numerous studies are being done
to access the effects such genetic manipulation may have on the environment, humans and livestock consuming the modified product. A generation or two from now, the answer may be certain. Corn is an example of such genetic manipulation. Scientists insert an insecticide into the DNA of the plant seed, resulting in fewer crops lost to insects and accomplishing an abundant harvest. Another interesting aspect of genetic manipulation involves the legal patent rights of Monsanto. The Supreme Court is hearing a case on Feb. 19, brought by a single small farmer over the farmer’s right to own and plant a second crop from seed harvested from his crop of Monsanto’sGMO seed. The question of patented, manipulated seed and farmer’s rights will be determined soon. It is another very large question in agricultural circles regarding such seed. It is interesting to watch these evolving problems and the far reaching consequences they present to farmers, large corporations and health. see Letters > page 7

Instead, its owners are seeking permission from Goochland officials to repurpose the 56-acre property as something more akin to a business venture than a private residence. “We’ve never charged anybody to use Dover Hall,” said Dennis Pryor, a real estate mogul who broke ground on the house in 1996 and moved in along with his wife, Cindy, in 2000. “This is just revenue to maintain the place.” Dover Hall was put on the market in 2007 at an asking price of $11.5 million. Pryor said he has had
no luck lining up a buyer, and the house was taken off the market at the end of last year. “Even people who had tons of money that could have easily afforded it, they just couldn’t deal with it,” Pryor said. “Just the size.” One of the largest residences in central Virginia, Dover Hall features nine bedroom suites, a grand ballroom, a library, a pub and about 30 bathrooms. It’s located at Manakin Road and Millers Lane, near Hermitage Country Club and Deep Run Hunt Club. Pryor has hosted numerous social events at the estate over the years that have drawn up to 600 attendees, but he said future parties would be smaller. Pryor has applied for a conditional-use permit that would allow him to use the property as an event venue and a limited bed-andbreakfast to accommodate overnight stays, mostly for wedding parties. He stressed that even though he has to get permission to operate Dover Hall as a bed-and-breakfast on certain occasions, that won’t be the main use. “In fact, my neighbors would have a heart attack if it were used for that,” Pryor said. County planners have suggested that if the application is approved, outdoor
activities would have to end by 11 p.m., overnight stays would be limited to 10 people, and the occupancy limit for the main house would be 299 people, along with other conditions. The Goochland Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the Dover Hall application on Feb. 21, according to county documents. The issue is tentatively scheduled to go to the Board of Supervisors on March 5. Pryor said he has the full support of his neighbors because any events held at the estate would be on a limited scale. Documentation prepared by the county staff pointed out that Dover Hall’s future may be in jeopardy if it remains solely a private residence. “Dover Hall is a unique site,” reads a background memo prepared for Goochland officials. “Continued use of the property as a single-family dwelling may no longer be tenable. Approval of this (permit) would support continued investment in the site.” Pryor would not speculate about the estate’s future if the permit is denied, but he said it “would not be a good thing.” “This is probably the best and probably the only use that it will have for the future,” Pryor said.

Cadets claim school best third in state By Thomas C. Dozier Special Correspondent
Liberty Christian Academy rode the strength of three championship-match winners – Andrew Atkinson (132pounds), Ike Podell (145) and Blake Papet (195) – to put an end to St. Christopher’s 11year reign in the 43rd VISAA Wrestling Championships held at Glen Allen High School on Saturday. As a result of the stellar effort, the Bulldogs squeaked by the Saints by a half point 267.50 to 267.00 to capture the state championship. The Lynchburg school racked up the needed points from a runner-up finish from Titus Glaze at the 182-pound division and three third-place finishes by Brady Leflew (106), Patrick Good (170) and Charles Hancock (285) to hold off St. Christopher’s late charge. The victory gave the Bulldogs their first VISAA wrestling title in school history. “Going into the final round, Liberty Christian was winning by three points,” said Benedictine coach Ryan Hall. “It was exciting in that you had Liberty Christian on the third-place mat, and Saint Christopher’s on the main mat for the championship. When St. Christopher’s heavyweight Tyler Anthony won in triple overtime the Saints thought they had won it and started celebrating. “At the same time, Liberty Christian won the third-place match and they thought they had won it too,” Hall said. “To show you how tight it was, the state champion today might be different than the state champion tomorrow. They did all the scoring at trackwrestling. com and originally said they had tied, and then they said Liberty won by 2, then the latest and final had them winning

by ½ point. “I knew it was going to be a three-horse race, whoever wrestled the best would be the champion but when our heavyweight [Austin Hague] went down, we were behind the eight-ball. We needed to pull some upsets and gets some other upsets that favored our way for us to have a chance. But I am proud of how we wrestled.” St. Christopher’s, which has a rich history in the sport of wrestling, had developed 68 state champions prior to this weekend. The Saints got championship match wins from standouts William Kelly (113), Robert Janis (152), Marshall Hollerith (220) and Tyler Anthony (285). Kelly captured the 106 crown last year while Janis won the 145-pound title
in 2012 and Hollerith placed second. Janis and Hollerith, both seniors, closed out brilliant prep careers with 42-2 and 35-13 records this season. But perhaps the most impressive team performance of the two-day event, 32man format, double-elimination tournament was turned in by Benedictine College Preparatory. The Cadets, who finished ninth last year, were a mere 30.50 points behind the top two teams and the only other team to surpass the 200point total with 237.00 points. “I think that I will remember the most about the overall team effort was our team chemistry,” Hall explained. “The togetherness, not only for the individuals but for something bigger than themselves. They love each other and I love
my kids. I am excited about going to Prep Nationals so the season is not over yet. “The kids getting gritty on the big stage was another highlight of the weekend. The experienced kids stepping up, and even the younger kids coming through when we needed them. “From top to bottom, from our most dedicated, seasoned wrestlers to my freshest kids, the all came through. “They helped each other and pushed each other. Wrestling builds character, and we are real tickled., that we are not only building character but displaying sportsmanship along the way.” Benedictine, which defeated the host school Glen Allen this season also posted big wins over St. Christopher’s, Liberty
Christian Academy and Paul VI for a 22-2 regular-season record, placed six wrestlers in the finals – Zach Walker at 120, Braxton Walker at 126, Shane Corbin at 132, Ulysses Avgeros at 160, Charles Thoma at 170 and Ralph Toomey at 182. “Our program is now an elite program among private schools,” Hall stated. “Thirty points out of first is not a lot. We want to eventually bring home a state championship like St. Christopher’s and Liberty Christian. We won three state titles, placed nine wrestlers on the all-state team and now we are taking six wrestlers, possibly seven with Jordan Hagood (106), to Prep Nationals at Lehigh University this weekend.
“We knew we could compete for a state championship and we did. Next year we are capable of winning it all but they are not going to hand it to us, it is not a done deal and it certainly is not done on paper. We will have to work hard and perform not as individuals but as a team.” In the final tally for the Cadets, Roanoke Catholic’s Josh Baier decisioned Zach Walker while Braxton Walker got the decision over Collegiate’s Preston Roper. Atkinson pinned Corbin and the Cougars’ Kyle Pate pinned Avegeros. Then, Thoma and Toomey put an exclamation point on the Benedictine see Cadets >page 113

Barons trip Bulldogs in JRD semifinals By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
The role of underdog is often a question of perception, not ranking. Bluestone entered last week’s James River District semifinal contest at second place Goochland as the No. 3 seed but at the end of the night, the Barons came away with a 60-57 win. “According to the standings, we came in here the underdog, but we didn’t feel like we were underdogs. And the team didn’t play that well,” said an elated Baron coach Michael Icenhour. The Barons, who suffered two season losses at the hands of the Bulldogs, didn’t look like underdogs as the game began, jumping to a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The Bulldogs were down 18-12 as the period ended. Goochland fought back in the second quarter, and Tammara Taylor sank two free throws to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 21-20. “I told them I was proud of the way they fought back at several points in the game,” Goochland coach Sarah
Cadets continued from >page 12 effort and claimed back-toback state titles at 170 and 182 respectively and the thirdplace finish became the best finish in school history. “Coming into this season,” Hall added. “We knew we could be good but Ralph Toomey has been instrumental in leading the way. I can’t say enough about him. He has been a complete package and helped us build this program. A state championship was a long-time coming for him and he deserved it. “He is the example of hard

recapture the lead 57-56. But in the final seconds Bluestone’s Bre Roberts went the length of the floor and was fouled, made both free throws to put the Barons on top to stay. Goochland was forced to foul again to stop the clock and Bluestone added two more for the final margin. The loss removed the Bulldogs’ hopes for a JRD tourney championship and a home game in regionals. Goochland will now travel to Clarke County in the tourney opener. “This was a disappointing loss. We wanted to play for a district championship, and this certainly doesn’t help our rankings in the regionals,” Voyack said. The Bulldogs came out in a man-to-man defense that didn’t click and Voyack felt that contributed to the slow start. “We were asleep at the beginning, and then went back to our go to defense, the press, and picked things up,” Voyack said. “We definitely had the momentum in the second quarter.” The coach also said “silly mistakes” and take-aways killed
the team against the Barons. “We made a lot of unforced errors tonight and they took advantage of that,” Voyack said. “They wanted it and played hard throughout the game.” The team’s momentary lapses, although short in duration, were enough to sink the Bulldogs. “I told the team the game of basketball is 32 minutes and you can’t stop playing for 30 seconds. Someone will come along and beat you,” Voyack said. Entering the regionals on the road offers its own set of challenges and Voyack said the team would have to up its game to meet the challenge. “It only gets harder from here on out. If we want to a chance to advance in regionals, we have to step up our game. We need to do that for the entire four quarters.”

Voyack said following the disappointing loss. “We just keep having these lapses where we stop playing.” The pressing Bulldog defense rattled an otherwise patient Baron offense as the
half wound down, resulting in two steals for baskets and a 2926 Goochland lead at the half. The teams stayed close throughout the third period that ended with a 41-40 Goochland lead.
However, cold shooting plagued the Bulldogs early in the fourth quarter and the Barons opened a six-point lead. Again, Goochland came back from the deficit with less than a minute remaining to
work and dedication. He has been blessed with great partners. But most of all, he is all about team. He worked so hard in wrestling. He listens, he believes in what we are doing and he was just great example of what you can accomplish. That is why we named him team captain along with Shane Corbin.” Besides the third-place finish, Benedictine knocked down two more prestigious awards. Coach Hall was named coach of the year and the Cadets were given the sportsmanship trophy for the second time in three years. Four seniors including Hague, Toomey, Colin Ventrella and
Daniel Parrish leave the program in capable hands for next season. Hall singled out three wrestlers – Hagood (fifth at 106), Colin Bohanon (seventh at 152) and Zach Walker (second at 120) – who went way above and beyond the call of duty. “Jordan Hagood had a fantastic tourney,” Hall said. “Colin Bohannon at 152 was terrific and Zach Walker put on a clinic at the 120-pound division. Valentine’s Day at the food pantry Contributed Report
“Like many people, I’ve had good Valentine’s Days, and not so good. I later came to realize that Valentine’s Day is about much more than flowers and candy, or even being part of a couple. I love that there’s a day in our busy lives when we officially celebrate love. I’m not just talking romantic love, like Hallmark would have us believe, but the real-deal, universal “stuff of life” that makes up who we really are. Behind our roles and personalities and professionalism, each of us, at essence, is a living, loving being. Call it spirit, call it sweetness -- whatever you want to call it, we’ve all got it. It’s just a matter of what we do with it,” said Heather Salmon, Food Pantry Manager at Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services. This week at GFCFS Food Pantry, the clients got a Valentine’s Day surprise! As clients came to “shop” for their weekly bag of groceries from the Food Pantry, they were allowed to choose from toys, books, and articles of clothing as a special Valentine’s Day treat for their children. “It hurts my heart to know that there are people right here in my neighborhood that will be spending Valentine’s Day trying to figure out how to feed their children dinner. It makes me sad to think of the elementary school children with hungry bellies who won’t get to enjoy holidays the way that I always have. Eating is such an enjoyable event that we often forget it is a luxury for some people. I keep a thank you note on my office wall from a child that says, “My mom lost her job and we couldn’t buy food. Thank you for helping us so that we can have breakfast.” It’s a reminder that little acts of love really do make a difference.” said Heather. Consistent with its mission to provide basic human services to the Goochland community, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) Food Pantry provides a variety of foods to low-income families and individuals who experience food insecurity for themselves and their families. Every Thursday morning from 9a.m. to noon, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services opens their food

pantry for families to “shop” for groceries. These food items have been donated or purchased and are given to individuals that qualify for this service. This past Thursday, 128 clients were so grateful for the children’s items they received along with their bag of food. The brand new items, donated by a local church included books, toys, clothing, gloves and scarves in a variety of styles and sizes for children of all ages were given to parents who were able to express their love for the children in their lives. “What I appreciate most about GFCFS is that it can take donations, no matter how small, and turn them
into nourishment for people in need. It’s great that GFCFS has programs designed to meet the specific needs of seniors, of children and of families in crisis. There are so many ways for volunteers and donors to help GFCFS share the love. Together we all create a living, growing community,” said Salmon. To learn more about Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services attend a Seeing is Believing Tour held twice monthly. In a 45 minute visit you will learn about their programs and services in a behind the scenes look at our Free Clinic. Our next tour is Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. Register on the website. www.Goochlan dFreeClinicAndFamilyServices.org
In his farewell concert, retiring Founder and Artistic Director Glen McCune will lead the 120 singers of One Voice Chorus in a program of personal favorites. Rise Up Singing will be presented at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road in Glen Allen. The concert will be hosted by long-time One Voice friend and WWBT-TV 12 News Anchor Sabrina Squire. A pre-concert conversation at 7 p.m. will explore “Harmony in Living Black and White,” a thought-provoking dialogue about race relations in Richmond and beyond. The musical program features the full chorus, the One Voice Ensemble, assistant conductor Tom Baynham, accompanist Rita Smith and soloists in a variety of musical genres, including classical choral selections, traditional spirituals, and theater music – notably the finale of Les Miserables. The concert will conclude with “Rise Up Singing,” a new composition by Glen McCune, written especially for this occasion. McCune founded One Voice Chorus in 2002 to bring together the richly diverse population of the Richmond region in shared experiences of great choral music. The non-auditioned community chorus is particularly focused on bridging the historical divide between African Americans and European Americans. In the past 11 years, more than 600 singers from all parts of the community have performed with One Voice in major concerts and community appearances for audiences of more than 41,000.
