Each February the Ebenezer Baptist Church family celebrates Black History month with an Evening in Black History. This year our theme was “Azubuike, Unity the past is our strength.” On Saturday, Feb. 16, Dr. Cheryl Hicks, Ph.D., embraced our theme by sharing some vital history with African Americans in Virginia and highlighted the “Richmond Street Car Boycott of 1904” as well as the 1963 March on Washington. She spoke of how the yearlong boycotts nearly bankrupted the street car company and quoted parts of Dr. King’s speech that are seldom quoted. “It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro

Two former Goochland High School drama students will star in the upcoming TheatreLab production of “Riding the Bull” next month at Gallery5 theater. The play by August Schulenburg, which opens March 10 at the theater at 200 W. Marshall Street in Richmond, features Deejay Gray and Maggie Bavolack. They talked about the upcoming produc-

tion last Saturday at an interview at Black Hand Coffee Company in Richmond. The production is part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival, said TheatreLAB’s Managing Director Annie Colpitts. Gray, who is also Artistic Director for TheatreLAB, said the Goochland High School drama program was pivotal in his acting development. “If it weren’t for the Goochland High School drama program I don’t think we would be doing this,” said Gray, who graduated from GHS in 2006. “Without that program I wouldn’t be successful,” said see Actors > page 8

On Jan. 24, Goochland resident Timm Bechter achieved a goal that he set for himself nearly three decades ago – he published his first book, “Three Legs to Newfoundland.” “The Three Legs to Newfoundland adventure is the story of life on a merchant freighter [the Ivan Gorthon], unexpected turns in a journey, trials and tribulations with weather, and the incredible people and geography of Newfoundland,” Bechter said recently. “It is the story of two 30-something buddies becoming brothers through shared difficulties and shared exhilaration in exploration of new peoples and places.” Bechter, 50, said the book describes the trip he and friend Mylan took when they were students at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business, where Bechter earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance in 1999. “The journey to Newfoundland itself comprises the vast majority of the story [that] happened over a 10-day period from Dec. 30, 1998, to Jan. 9, 1999,” Bechter said. “We were on our Christmas/New Year’s break between first and second semester of our second and final year in the [Darden] program.” The book is basically a true account of what occurred during the trip, Bechter said. “Some of the minor details of the book may not be exactly as things happened but the essential time line and major events of the story are all true,” he said. His primary motivation for writing the book, Bechter said, was that when he recounted the story to friends and family, they often told him that he should write a book about his and Mylan’s adventure to Newfoundland. “The experience of riding a merchant vessel leaving the Port of Richmond north to Corner Brook, Newfoundland in the winter turned out to be something of a ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’ type journey for my friend Mylan and me,” Bechter said. “I have wanted to be a writer since I was in my early 20s. I decided several years ago that this would be my first book.” Bechter said the title of the book comes from the three modes of transportation he and Mylan used to get to Newfoundland – a merchant ship, a rental car and a ferry. It took about a year to write the book, which is self-published through Amazon’s Create Space, Bechter said. “What I enjoyed the most in writing the book was remembering all the things that happened

SPORTS Timm Bechter and communicating with my friend Mylan trying to piece together the details,” Bechter said. “Since the actual journey happened over 13 years before I started writing the book it was a real test of our memories to piece everything back together. Luckily I have photos and many of the events of the trip necessarily tied to very specific dates that gave my original timeline/outline certainty.” He and Mylan keep in touch and remain close, Bechter said. The book has been well-received by family and friends and he is pleased with it as well, Bechter added. “I am considering republishing it someday down the road with photos and maps included,” he said. “My next project is a collection of short stories.” A native of New Haven, Conn., Bechter earned a B.S. in Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1985. He served as a division officer on the USS Vandegrift based in Long Beach, Calif., from 1987 to 1990. Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, Bechter married his wife, Elizabeth, in April 1990, and that May they moved to Virginia from Seal Beach, Calif. “Before that I was a publishing (sell-side) equity analyst at Legg Mason, based in Baltimore, Md.,” Bechter added. “Prior to attending Darden, I was the plant manager at Solite Corporation’s lightweight aggregate plant in Arvonia (Buckingham County).” Publishing his first book has changed his life, Bechter said. “It has from the standpoint of accomplishing something I have always wanted to do,” he said. “Now my goals are a little higher for myself as an author.” The 190-page “Three Legs to Newfoundland” is available through Create Space, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and various certified Amazon resellers, Bechter said.

Do you sing in the shower? Like to tell funny stories to family and friends? Or maybe you’ve got a repertoire of magic tricks. If you do, then maybe you’ve got talent. And talent is what Kenny Rowe is looking for. Longtime county resident Rowe is organizing a countywide talent show to benefit his Serenity Garden project, a plan to employ handicapped people to raise food on seven acres he owns in Hadensville, food that will then be donated to 12 county churches to distribute as they see fit. The show is set for May 25 at Goochland High School, from 2 p.m. until… Rowe will interview likely prospects for his show, tentatively called Goochland’s Got Talent, each Saturday in

Now, on a piece of inherited land in Hadensvile where he lives, Rowe is pursuing his current project, which like all of his pursuits, is a form of ministry. “I want to serve the Lord again,” he explained, recalling how he once traveled with the Promise Keepers men’s ministry. Admission to the talent show will be free, said Rowe and there’s no charge for those who will perform. He hopes that businesses will donate gift certificates to be used as prizes and donations for the Serenity Garden will be accepted from those attending the show. It never really panned out for him so he returned to Goochland. “I’ve lived here since I was four years old,” said Rowe, sporting a cowboy hat and boots and a colorful tie, in an interview at the White Hawk Music Café last Friday. He graduated from Goochland High School in 1975, married and raised two children with his wife Mazie. He worked at a number of jobs, most

Woman’s club celebrates 50 years with ‘Spring Fling’ fashion show Special theme for annual fund raising event Contributed Report

This year marks a major milestone for the Goochland Woman’s Club as it commemorates 50 years of service to the community. As part of the celebration, this year’s fund raising event will feature a half-century of volunteerism. The club is presenting its “Spring Fling” fashion show and luncheon on Saturday, April 13 at the Richmond Country Club. Dillard’s will be the fashion house, and a number of vendor’s will be on hand as part of the festivities. “We are celebrating our milestone by featuring period pieces as part of our theme for the event”, said Joan Peterson, Co-Chair of the event with fellow club member, Patsy Garber. “The success of this event is key to the financial contributions our club makes to the community”, added Mrs.

Garber. The Goochland Woman’s Club was founded February 13, 1963 by 42 local women who wanted to create a service club that would provide fellowship among its members while supporting special projects for their community. This month marks 50 years of service to the Goochland community, and to the larger projects of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), the oldest and largest women’s organization in the world, headquartered in Washington, D.C. Over five decades of club work, members have donated tens of thousands of volunteer hours in support of club-initiated activities. Recent volunteer projects included reading to school children, volunteering in the library, delivering Meals on Wheels, supporting Goochland’s Habitat for Humanity and many more. The club raises money through the annual fashion show to support a scholarship for a college bound Goochland High School senior, the All Night Graduation Party, the

Make a Wish Guest Column by Jim Ridolphi One should never underestimate the wisdom of a child. Being around three small children offers infinite opportunity to gaze into a world that is unburdened by the everyday responsibilities that all too often control adult lives. They view life with a brutal honesty that is refreshing. The results are not predictable, and often embarrassing for concerned parents who never know what to expect from the mouths of their children. At other times, the conversations of my kids offer an insight that is unique and unable to obtain through any other medium. But, the best tidbits of wisdom often come from conversations that are overheard and not intended for adult ears. As I work at my computer, I hear intriguing tales and observations that often evoke laughter, sadness and surprise. That leads me to a comment I overheard a few weeks ago. My kids were preparing for a Career Day at school, and anticipation of just what uniform to wear was the source of intense discussion. Emma said she was going to wear one of my white shirts and display her intentions of being a veterinarian. She stuffed a small stuffed dog in her top pocket, and, for the moment, most of life’s unpredictability about future career choices were solved. Sophia grabbed a press pass, a reporter’s notebook and pen. She

said she wanted to be a reporter/ photographer. “That’s what Daddy does,” Sophia told her siblings. “Yeah, but he’s mostly a daddy. That’s his main job,” Emma quickly replied. Sophia’s choice flattered me, and I hope her creative talents will open many doors in her bright future. Which brings me to my son Jack, who had the most trouble coming up with a career choice. He’s interested in design, engineering and building. The girls prompted him to come up with something. “What are your dreams, Jack? What do you want to do when you get older?” Sophia asked. I listened intently but didn’t intervene, knowing that question holds different answers for Jack than for the rest of my children. He suffers from Muscular Dystrophy and faces a less than certain future. Unfortunately, some of the things that lie ahead for him are not pleasant. He and I have discussed his situation and he has many questions regarding his future, but he faces this enormous challenge with dignity, courage and tenacity. “I want to swim when it’s nighttime, and go to Disney World,” Jack said in response to Sophia’s question. She is also working on her first CD project. Hicks did a number of selections such as “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” and spirituals such as “Ride on King Jesus” and “How I Got Over.” She often engaged the audience to clap with her as she sang, ending each selection to a standing ovation. tions. County and school employees would get a 2 percent pay increase under the new budget, the first pay increase since 2008. Utility rates would rise by 5 percent but the bimonthly minimum would be reduced by half to 4,000 gallons, said Assistant County Administrator John Wack in his presentation. Those who use 4,000 gallons or less would pay less under the new plan, despite the higher rate; those who used 8,000 gallons or more would see their costs

increase. The proposed budget envisions an additional $320,000 transfer to Goochland Schools for the proposed raise, an amount not included in the current schools budget. The Board will likely vote to advertise the budget and tax rates at its March 5 meeting. Town Hall meetings are scheduled in each district from March 13 through March 28. A public hearing is set for April 8 on the budget and tax rates with adoption projected to take place at the Board’s April 16 meeting.

Kristen and her husband, Shawn Custer, gave him two great-grandsons, Thomas Ashton Custer and Tyler Norman Custer. Janet and her husband, Robert “Bobby” Brown gave him a devoted grandson, Robert Ashley Brown and his wife, Jamie, of St. Stephens Church,

He took great pride and joy in his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and as one of them said, he was the model grandfather. Odell also had one beloved brother, the late Curt Lee Proffitt of Charlottesville. Odell retired from Fork Union Military Academy at the age of 73. He was proud to have been a carpenter and craftsman and enjoyed making furniture for his family. Bulldogs basketball teams look toward future By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland’s loss to Clarke County in the Region B Division II girls’ basketball quarterfinals may have ended the Bulldogs’ season, but it did not dampen Coach Sarah Voyack’s dedication to the mission. That goal is bringing winning girls’ basketball to Goochland. Voyack has proved she has the goods to get the job done. At 14-9, the team posted its best record in seven years and Voyack’s teams have shown regular improvement with each passing season. This year, the team’s only regular season district losses came at the hands of cham-

pion Amelia. “Overall, it was a great season. We started off slow but played a tough non-district schedule,” Voyack said. “Once we got into the district, we were able to string together several winning streaks.” She said the team expected to advance further in the district and regional tourneys, and was hoping for another shot at Amelia. “We were upset we couldn’t take one from Amelia this season and the girls really wanted to face them again in the district tournament finals, but that didn’t happen” Voyack said. This year’s team featured a senior-laden lineup and

Voyack knows it won’t be easy to replace that type of veteran leadership and experience on the court. “The underclassmen have some pretty big shoes to fill - both on the court and off. I think they have learned a lot from our seniors on how to be a good teammate and how to stay together as a team,” Voyack said. “But we’ll definitely need some girls to step their game up in the off-season in order to compete in the district.” For Voyack, the seven departing seniors were a special group. “Most of them have been around the program for three or four years so I was able to see all of them grow and develop as basketball players,

Awards roll in for local riders On Feb. 10, the Virginia Cross Country Series (VXCS) held it’s banquet for the 2012 season at the Community Center in Charles City. The VXCS is the only AMA sanctionedStateChampionship off-road series in Virginia for bikes and quads. The races are held throughout the state from the eastern region to the far southwest. The VXCS conducts eight or nine events a season (one per month) from March through October each year. In 2012 there were about 100 racers at each event. Goochland riders again placed well. Chris Scriber (below right) placed first in two categories - the Super Mini 14-15 Class and 200B Class. Christian Sherry (above right) placed first in the 250C Class. On Feb. 24, Scriber raced in Round 2 of the AMA East Hare Scrambles Championship in Elko, Ga. He won 2nd Place in the 200A Class. Submitted by Tom Purnell

but more importantly as young women,” she said. “Every one of them brought something different to the team - whether it was points, rebounds, steals or just being a good teammate and constantly supporting one another.” That group includes Sydney Ezell, Chakiryn Jackson, Christina Mills, Kelsey Rosenbaum, Dana Rodriguez, Tammara Taylor and Rayna Southerland. When Rodriguez and Taylor were freshmen, the team went 0-14. “To see the way that things have turned around in their careers was great. They put in the time and effort and they were able to go from bottom of the district to finishing second. That’s not too bad,” Voyack said. Four girls from this year’s squad made it to the James River All-District team: Tammara Taylor - 1st team, Chakiryn Jackson - 2nd team, Sydney Ezell and Khayla Leabough honorable mention. The Goochland boys’ basketball season got off to a slow start due to the football team’s championship run, but gathered momentum as the campaign progressed. “I am very proud of the way our team came together after getting a later start than most other teams,” said head coach Preston Gordon. “After

we started to build a little bit of chemistry and find the right rotations we needed offensively and defensively, the team began to rely on one another. We had multiple three-game winning streaks that seemed to really ignite the confidence in our players.” The team loses a five man senior nucleus but returns a solid group of returning players for next year’s campaign. Nathan Adams, Harry Talmage, Evan Smith, Nathan Mattox and Avery Faulcon will graduate in the spring, and Gordon said replacing them won’t be easy. Gordon said Talmage’s

Mattox and Smith shared team captain duties and provided sparks at opposite ends of the floor. “Evan Smith and Nathan Mattox, both captains, excelled for us offensively and defensively respectively. It was evident that these two guys were not ready for their season to end against Buckingham as they both hit key 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the game,” Gordon said. Next year’s returners include: point guard - Ceejay Johnson and forward Josh Hayden. Also returning will be sixth man David Dyer at guard, Reggie Hobbs at wing, guards Alec Crepps and Cory Alexander as well as forward Cephas Harden.
