Benedictine takes state title Economy, jobs top Cuccinelli agenda GOP candidate addresses friendly crowd Friday By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli received a warm reception on Friday when the GOP gubernatorial candidate spoke to the Goochland Republican Women’s Club at the Manakin Fire House. Cuccinelli, 44, was sworn in on Jan. 16, 2010, and drawing laughter, he said the “swearing at began on Jan. 17.” Cuccinelli told the audience of

about 80 that his wife Teiro’s family was originally from Goochland. “So we have roots back here,” he said. During three successful campaigns to represent Fairfax County in the General Assembly, Cuccinelli said he never outspent an opponent and he doubts that he will raise more money than his Democratic challenger for governor, Terry McAuliffe, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Cuccinelli poked fun at McAuliffe, saying that McAuliffe was in Syracuse, N.Y. on Friday raising money for the campaign. “My opponent’s going to need see Cuccinelli > page 7

School Board votes to upgrade security at high school complex By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Goochland’s School Board has decided to spend up to $60,000 to upgrade security cameras and install a buzzer system at the Goochland High School/Middle School campus. After a presentation by Assistant

Superintendent Peter Gretz and Assistant Goochland High School Principal Matt Covington, the Board voted 3-2 to approve moving that amount from the instruction category to operations and maintenance for the upgrades, which were the first two priorities of the School Safety Task Force. Buzzer systems are already in

use at the county’s three elementary schools “Our hope is to do something immediately to improve safety,” said Goochland Superintendent James Lane. District 4 member Elizabeth A. Hardy said she also wanted to see see Security > page 7

A 17-year-old senior at Goochland High School, Kelsey Rosenbaum was recently honored with a Brotherhood Sisterhood Youth Award from the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond. “I am humbled by this honor for what I consider to be simply doing the right thing, Rosenbaum said in a recent interview. “I guess what means the most about receiving this award is the fact that my ordinary efforts that I would have thought were under the radar weren’t so under the radar. Rosenbaum was one of 53 area high school students presented with the award during a ceremony last week at River Road Church, Baptist. “Students are named by school counselors and administration for this award, said Sharon C. Clayton, chairman of the Interfaith youth awards. “They do not apply for it. The award is comparable to a humanitarian award. Founded in 1929, the purpose of the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond is to develop understanding, respect, and cooperation among the various religious faiths, Clayton said. “We value opportunities to recognize youth who work for unity and reconciliation in the community, Clayton added. The local Interfaith Council has been sponsoring the youth awards for high school juniors and seniors since 1968, according to Clayton. To be considered for the award, students must demonstrate the ability to relate to others, show compassion to those with limitations, engage in activities that help to improve human understanding and reach out to help others, Clayton said. Rosenbaum said she maintains a grade point average in the 4.2 to 4.3 range. According to her guidance counselor, Beth Fowler, Rosenbaum is a member of the National Honor Society, the GHS marching and concert bands, a Special Olympics volunteer, a member of the girls’ basketball team and a student ambassador. “Friendly to a fault, Kelsey often strikes up conversations with new students as they are touring the building, introducing herself and seeking to learn about them and their interests to find common ground where she can share insight, Fowler said. Rosenbaum said the Interfaith youth award was not something that she tried to earn.

Goochland High School senior Kelsey Rosenbaum received a Brotherhood Sisterhood Youth Award last week from the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond.

“It was more of recognition of how I conduct my day-to-day life, she said. “I was never aware of this award until my guidance counselor Mrs. Fowler told me I had been named the honoree, so it wasn’t really a goal or anything of mine. I think that this award will inspire me to keep being me and it will help inspire me to not be content with what I do now, but to keep doing more. I don’t feel that I really think or try to do the actions that the award embodies. I am just me and I do what I think is the right thing to do. Rosenbaum added that she has “always strived to be a good, kind, and helpful person. Participating in extracurricular activities has helped her to become a more well-rounded person and the trick is to balance those activities with academics, Rosenbaum said. Following high school graduation, Rosenbaum said she would like to attend college and pursue a career in athletic training or business, with a concentration in marketing. She encourages her GHS classmates to do their best to succeed. “Give it your all, Rosenbaum said. “As long as you try your hardest, you should have nothing to regret. Lots of things will go your way, but lots won’t go your way. You just need to roll with it and make the best of everything. Try your best and do the right thing.

A Dr. Seuss birthday party

Contributed Photo

District 1 Supervisor Susan Lascolette reads to children last Saturday at the Goochland Library.

On Saturday morning, March 2, at the Goochland Branch Library fun was had by all celebrating the birthday of the wonderful Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat led children to the story well where they heard Dr. Seuss stories read by the members of the Goochland Board of Supervisors. Then the children and their parents went to the multipurpose room which had been transformed into a Dr. Seuss extravaganza of crafts, games, and photo ops! They squirted water guns at golf balls, kept balloons afloat with paddles, created cats in the hat made from noodles, ate cake and posed for pictures as the Cat in the Hat! Refreshments for the event were provided by the Friends of the Goochland Library.

Safety in the schools It was good to hear the School Board take up security last week at their workshop meeting, when they moved $60,000 in surplus funds from instruction to the operations and maintenance fund to enhance school security Like folks all around the nation, we’ve been thinking about what to do about school security and were glad to see the Board take action to upgrade parking lot cameras at the Goochland High School/Middle School campus and move to install a buzzer system at the two schools. Other upgrades are to be expected in the future and while the community will certainly be eager to know about them when they occur, School Board member John L Lumpkins Jr., District 3, who was once a sworn law enforcement officer himself, made an interesting point after the presentation by Assistant Superintendent Peter Gretz and Assistant Goochland High School Principal Matt Covington. That point being that while it’s all well and good to brief the School Board on the results of the deliberations of the School Safety Task Force, at some point the School Board may want to conduct some of their deliberations on how to enhance security at the schools in closed sessions. In light of the recent attacks on helpless students, it would seem prudent not to reveal to the world every single detail of the security plan down to diagrams of what improvements are made where and what personnel might be involved.

Vigil planned for real estate agent

Friendly territory GOP gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli got a warm welcome at last week’s meeting of the Goochland Republican Women’s Club. As would be expected for a conservative Republican in a conservative county like Goochland. But meanwhile, his former rival for the Republican nomination for governor, current Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, was testing the waters with a widely distributed email to friends and potential supporters, asking in a straightforward fashion if they would support him should he choose to run as an “Independent Republican.” That means donate money. Enough to run a viable campaign. Conventional wisdom has it that a Bolling bid would hand the keys to the Governor’s Mansion to Democrat Terry McAuliffe, since many observers feel a Bolling run would just siphon off voters from Cuccinelli. But could Bolling draw just as many ballots from McAuliffe, who is surely tacking right now as hard as he can towards the middle, as he would from Cuccinelli? Surely we’ll see McAuliffe skeet shooting or some such soon to prove he’s just another good old boy, don’t you think? But will it fly? Would a Bolling run hurt Cuccinelli more than McAuliffe? Or could Bolling win it? -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Unhappy with county administrator I’m writing this letter concerning our County Administrator Rebecca Dickson. We asked to meet with her about the salary, bonus and reimbursement of money paid on insurance owed to a county employee. She said she did not need to meet with us. We also asked for a grievance form which we were denied. I have lived in Goochland County all my life (58 years) and I have never seen anyone act so unprofessional in dealing with county citizens. She needs to understand that she works for us. We pay her salary. If she can’t act in a professional way, maybe we should look into replacing her with someone who can. G. S. Parrish Gum Spring

Cuccinelli continued from > page 1 a tour guide, Cuccinelli said if McAuliffe were elected governor. “I don’t need on-the-job training, Cuccinelli said. An advocate of small government, Cuccinelli said the people of Virginia are the state’s greatest resource. “We need to get out of their way, he said. During the 2012 presidential campaign, the Democrats did a better job outworking Republicans at the grassroots level, Cuccinelli said. Since the election, Cuccinelli said he’s been asked what Republicans need to do to be successful. “Show the way, he said with conviction. During his years of public service Cuccinelli said he has made it a priority to fight against human trafficking and continues to do so as attorney general. “We are leading the way on this front, he said. “It’s one of the most evil crimes I’ve ever seen. Cuccinelli also noted that he’s not just interested in putting criminals behind bars but he’s also committed to freeing those who are falsely accused, citing the example of

Thomas Haynesworth, who Cuccinelli helped free after Haynesworth spent 27 years in prison for crimes that he did not commit. As governor, Cuccinelli said his top priorities will be “jobs and the economy. The GOP hopeful also said he favors tax reform that’s pro-growth, but without raising taxes. The Commonwealth should do its best to attract and retain business in the state, Cuccinelli said. “We need to make Virginia foolish to leave, he said. Cuccinelli implored his Republican audience to take the initative in getting out the vote and not wait to be prompted. “We need more turnout in places like Goochland, he said of the Republican stronghold. Following his talk, Cuccinelli was asked how he will try to appeal to the majority of voters while holding fast to his conservative principles. “Well you know I got an awful lot of practice at that running for the State Senate in Fairfax, he said. “It was not a conservative district by any means. I mean it was Fairfax for goodness sake and we did that really by talking to people about how these

principles apply to the issues they care about and in their lives. Cuccinelli acknowledged that the national spotlight will be on Virginia’s race for governor and the response of the electorate in a “purple state. “And we aim to show what they do, he said. “We’re going to win and we’re going to win with a lot of support at the ground level. That’s going to be key. It’s one of the points I tried to emphasize here [in Goochland]. We’re counting on the people right here to help us win. Kay Gates, first vice president and program chairman for the Goochland Republican Women’s Club, said she wanted Cuccinelli to speak to the group “and connect with the women and I think that the women benefitted from hearing him. “I think he is a great speaker, said Alison Ervin, past president of the club. “He is so sincere and he will make a fabulous governor. Club member Karen Ogando, 32, said she thinks Cuccinelli can make the case with voters of her generation that conservative principles work. “Well I think that young people need to realize that

school year. “We know these two things have to be done and we have the funding, said Lane, who added that internal security cameras could be more expensive. The vote on the transfer of funds was the only action item on the agenda for the workshop meeting. In other business, the Board heard committee update reports, among them a report from Lane on the Minority Advisory Committee. Lane said the committee planned to work toward increasing

math scores, participation in gifted programs, attendance at Maggie Walker Governor’s School and reducing suspension rates for African American students.

Well guess what, conservative Republicans, they know all about saving their money and building something on their own. So that’s a view that we need to project as a group, but as far as Cuccinelli, I think if he sticks to his principles, he’s going to definitely appeal to younger voters. Contacted on Sunday, Molly Payne, chairman of the Goochland County Photo by Ben Orcutt Democratic Committee, said she had no response to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli talks with Gracie Tingle, an associate member of the Goochland Republican Cuccinelli’s comments. No fencing with questions of safety at RIR By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

The devastating crash during the season-opening NASCAR Nationwide race at Daytona International Speedway has initiated questions of spectator safety nationally. Over two dozen race fans were injured by flying debris when the car driven by rookie Kyle Larson flew into the protective fencing. The residual impact of that incident at Daytona was felt at every race track across the country and attention has not only become focused on how such an event could occur but if it could happen elsewhere. Accidents are an everyday part of NASCAR and wrecks at the longer superspeedways often result in mechanical carnage. However, it is extremely rare when such events carry into the realm of bystanders. At Daytona, parts of Larson’s car traveled either through or over the protective fencing with disastrous results. Remarkably, no one was killed and none of the 12 drivers involved were injured in the crash, including Larson, who climbed from his Chevrolet which had nothing remaining beyond the fire wall. The odds of everything aligning perfectly to create the outcome at Daytona are astronomical. Nearing the finish line, the tight pack of competitors was driving four wide on the steeply angled track. The wreck began when Regan Smith moved to block Brad Keselowski. The two made contact and began to slide sending the rest of the drivers into a chaotic scramble to avoid a collision. As a result, Larson T-boned the side of Keselowski’s car and went into a spin setting up a nearly head on collision with Brian Scott and Justin

Photo by Andrew Hudson courtesy of RIR

A wreck during the season opening Nationwide race at Daytona International Speedway left 28 fans injured when Kyle Larson’s car flew into the protective fence strewing parts into the stands. The incident opened questions about safety at other tracks around the country including Richmond International Raceway, above. While such accidents are extremely rare, being prepared is they key and RIR continually reevaluates its safety plans and equipment.

Allgier. It appears that impact began the disintegration of the front end of Larson’s car, sending one tire rocketing skyward. Likewise, the angle of the track, multi-car turbulence and speed propelled Larson into an airborne spin. The car then struck the fence at the crossover gate, which is arguably the weakest point in the barrier because there are no high tension support cables running though that area as elsewhere around the track. The fencing tore away under the full weight of the car and the configuration of the gate area may have contributed to the further disintegration of Larson’s front end sending debris flying into the stands. While scrutiny was placed on how the injuries occurred, less attention was focused on the actions of the track’s emergency response team and the fact that, for the most part, the fence did was it was supposed

to do; prevent the car itself from reaching the seats. While one tire and smaller parts did injure spectators, the engine and major front end components of Larson’s vehicle were stopped just inside the fence area. Richmond International Raceway president Dennis Bickmeier was in Daytona but had left the track before the accident occurred. Watching the replays on television, Bickmeier’s thoughts gradually turned to Richmond. “Everything goes through your mind,” he said. “If I were back here, knowing all the preparation that our team goes through in regards to handling a major incident like that.” Bickmeier said it was such preparation that prevented the outcome of Daytona from being much worse. “I know that the medical personnel, the track workers, got a lot of praise for how coordinated the effort was, the work they did

to get to the injured parties and everything. That makes you feel good. The things you practice and train for and put in place really did work.” While accidents happen every week in motorsports, it is extremely rare when fan injuries are a result. Nine spectators were injured in 2009 when the car of Carl Edwards flew into the catch fence at Talladega in an accident similar to Daytona. In the 1990s, six fans were killed in two separate accidents involving high speed racing. Three spectators died at Charlotte during an IndyCar Series race in 1999 while the same number of fatalities occurred in a 1998 CART U.S. 500 race at Michigan. The odds of a similar accident occurring at RIR are exponentially greater than the those which created the perfect storm of a wreck at Daytona. Because of the narrower track, drivers in Richmond rarely force a four-wide pack head-

ing down the front stretch. Likewise, because of the ¾ mile configuration, drivers rarely exceed 160 miles per hour. In recent history, the only accident to bring a car into contact with the fencing at RIR occurred during the September 2005 Busch Series race when Mike Wallace turned the car driven by Martin Truex Jr. onto its side along the back stretch. In that instance, both cars were coming out of turn two when Wallace forced Truex into the wall. Wallace’s car then continued to press against Truex until he was forced up the wall and onto his side, sliding the length of the back stretch. Though Truex’s car never became airborne, as it slid on its side, the front right tire did briefly connected with the fencing then bounced away and no debris appeared to reach the stands. Furthermore, because the accident occurred along the backstretch during a Busch Series race, the seats were unoccupied. If the Daytona accident brings about any changes in NASCAR they will not come overnight. “I think it’s probably going to be a little bit of a process,” Bickmeier said. “I think we’ve got to wait until our company and NASCAR look at what happened before we start hearing some things at the other tracks.” Late last week NASCAR was still investigating the Daytona accident and were in the process of reconstructing Larson’s car, examining video replays and consulting fence experts to discover what went wrong. NASCAR announced they will have an evaluation completed in time to implement changes before their next superspeedway race at Talladega in May. They will then determine if changes need to made at other tracks around the country. Bickmeier pointed out that

safety in NASCAR is an ever evolving process perpetuated by events such as the accident at Daytona. Sixty years ago, the track in Richmond was surrounded by wooden fences which eventually evolved into metal guardrails. “From guardrails to a wall to a fence, a bigger fence, to a bigger fence, to an even bigger fence,” Bickmeier said. Most recently, Steal and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barriers were installed along the backstretch at RIR following an accident that injured driver Jeff Gordon two years ago. “You plan and you prepare for everything but you learn every event, whether it’s your event or somebody else’s event,” Bickmeier said. “I think safety is always evolving.” Likewise, much of what track workers do goes unseen to the public or media. “Our guys inspect everything whether it be fencing, walking the track, the walls, whatever that is,” Bickmeier said. “So much of that goes undetected to the fans and the media but that’s what our job is. Our job is fan safety. That’s what we do.” The track continually reviews and updates emergency measures to deal with incidents if they ever do occur. “We’re very coordinated with outside agencies,” Bickmeier said. “Putting these events on, people always look at it as two weekends a year. We work 365 days a year to prepare for those two races. “We don’t just pick up and do the same old stuff we did last year,” Bickmeier said. “We review last year and make improvements.” Last Sunday evening, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart made an unpublicized trip to the Halifax Health Medical see NASCAR >page 13

Cadets overcome adversity to claim state title By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

ETTRICK – Until the last minute, it was anybody’s game. For 31 minutes on Saturday, neither #2 seed Bishop O’Connell nor #4 seed Benedictine could deliver a knockout blow in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I boys’ basketball championship game at Virginia State University. But a steal, intentional foul call, and 3-point goal gave the Cadets a three point lead. They held on for a 62-56 victory. Robert Johnson and Nick Coppola started off the afternoon on a cold streak, but they warmed up as the game wore on and finished with 22 and 20 points, respectively. But Johnson was the hero of the final minute, picking off a Knight ball at mid-court and racing down toward the basket. Bishop O’Connell’s Jamaal King wrapped him in a nearbear hug as he went for a layup and was called for an intentional foul. Johnson sank one of two free throws to tie the game 52-52. Then on the ensuing inbound play, Johnson got the ball near the right baseline and sank a 3-pointer to give the Cadets (31-4) a 55-52 lead. “That was real big,”

NASCAR continued from >page 12 Center to visit with fans that were injured in the Saturday race, which he won. Stewart’s victory lane celebration was highly subdued when he learned fans had been injured in the accident and he made the visit after being knocked out of the Daytona 500 early on Sunday. Stewart took exception to the incident being not only a driver but a team owner and the owner of Eldora Speedway in Ohio.

Above right: The Cadets’ Nick Coppola (5) goes inside for a score as Jamaal King (4) defends. Right: Benedictine head coach Robert Churchwell III, right, and the assistants watch anxiously as Nick Gorski shoots a free throw to give the Cadets a late four point lead.

Johnson said. “We knew we needed a stop right there, but we were thinking of a shot and a rebound. A steal was even better. I think that was a big turning point in the game.” The Knights (27-7) were not ready to give up. They closed to within two points, 58-56, with 15 seconds left, but the Cadets would not cooperate with O’Connell’s attempt to foul to get the ball back, converting four free throws over the next 10 seconds to seal the win. Bishop O’Connell coach Joe Wootten said the Knights’s busy schedule may have proved a detriment down the stretch– they had just completed the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament just before the VIS tournament began. “It was our sixth game in eight days,” Wootten said. “I’m really proud of our kids in terms of the effort they had. …

I thought we were tired, but I thought our kids gave everything they had. That’s all I can ask of them.” Bishop O’Connell’s Leroy Butts scored a game-high 23 points, followed by Junior Etou with 15 points and Romelo Trimble with 13. Benedictine had to overcome quite a few problems in reaching the state championship game this season, losing one of their best players to grades and having former Patrick Henry standout Raymon Minor out for part of the season with an injury. “These guys fought, they stayed together,” said Benedictine coach Robert Churchwell III. “They’re a phenomenal group of kids. … They really love each other. They really like each other, and that made all the difference.” The Cadets had a more immediate concern to overcome in the VIS title game:

cold shooting. Johnson and Coppola struggled to find the net at first. “We just had to keep playing and not worry about the shots that weren’t falling,” Coppola said. “We’ve got to focus on the ones that are falling.” Johnson suggested butterflies might have been to blame for Benedictine’s early shooting woes. “It was Nick’s first time in a state championship, and my first time in a private school state championship,” Johnson said. “So it was probably a bit of nerves, jitters, excitement. But as the game went on, that went out the window and we started to play our game.” He said the inbound play that put Benedictine ahead in the final minute was a set piece. “That’s been one of our key plays all year,” Johnson said. “I read it, how they’d been playing it all game and knew, when

I back-screened off L.G. (Gill) and felt the other man help, that it was going to be open. That helped me prepare for the shot, and I just knocked it down.” While some of the players on the court began to sense victory in the final minute, Churchwell was not ready to celebrate. “I didn’t start feeling like I had it until five seconds on the clock,” said Churchwell, a former Georgetown Hoya who is in his first year as Benedictine’s coach. Minor had just converted two free throws, and the Knights did not try to get another score, letting the remaining seconds run off the clock. “That was it,” Churchwell said. The Cadets reached the title game after eliminating Liberty

Christian Academy in a 63-43 rout on Friday night. Gill led all scorers with 21 points while Johnson added 17. BENEDICTINE (31-4) — Johnson 22, Coppola 20, Gill 4, Gorski 8, Minor 8, Ferrell 0. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, difficult decisions take time to mull over. Although you want to properly work through all the scenarios, this week you might not have all the time you need. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, water rolls off of your back quite easily. However, something tugs at you this week and you may have to give it more thought than you’re accustomed to.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, with such a hectic schedule, you may be feeling the pressure. It is not unreasonable to take some time for yourself and focus on your relationship with a spouse or significant other.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, keep the lines of communication open with a loved one. There may be messages coming your way, and you should be ready to receive them.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, now is a good time to get friends or family together for an informal dinner party. Focus your energy on socialization to get away from the daily grind.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Sometimes you have to make a few mistakes before you get things right, Leo. Don’t let this worry you because you’ll get back on the right path soon enough.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 You may need to break out of your routines this week, Scorpio. Even though you thrive when things are organized, you cannot expect everything to go according to plan.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, others appreciate all that you do for them, but sometimes they have to do for themselves to learn valuable lessons. This week is a time to step aside.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, things may seem like they are going to go one way this week, but at the last minute things turn in an entirely different direction.

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Finding time to get everything done can be challenging, Aries. Fortunately, you have quite a few supporters in your corner who are willing to lend a helping hand.
