Goochland Education Foundation gala fund raiser raises $8,000 By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland Education Foundation President Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda said Monday that the foundation’s second annual fund raising gala, Casino Royale, grossed about $8,000 and drew about 50 people . “Given that this is the second year holding the gala, I am very pleased with the outcome,” said Nelson-Lyda Monday morning.
GEF Vice President William Quarles, who was busy snapping photos of the event Saturday evening at the Richmond Country Club, said “It’s all about the children and the teachers.” The evening began with a catered dinner by the country club at 6 p.m. followed by games of chance conducted by Messino’s Casinos and a silent auction. Sponsors for the evening incuded former Goochland School Board member Susan K. Bechter, CCA Financial, Keel & Commpany and RIver City Youth
Fitness. Nelson-Lyda was pleased with the enthusiasm the event generated. “You had a lot of people hooping and hollering,” she said. Nelson-Lyda said she envisions the event becoming a permanent fixture in Goochland. “We hope to have a similar event each year. The idea is to run it as a casino night with folks ‘betting’ on education. See more photos on page 3.
A 20-year-old Goochland man died last Thursday night playing a game of Russian roulette. Goochland Sheriff James Agnew said Christopher Ryan Benson of Jackson Shop Road, died when he put a .22 caliber revolver to his head and pulled the trigger. Agnew said a group of young people were drinking and partying outside in the 2300 block of Camelback Road late Thursday night. “It was an outside party down in a field,” said Agnew. Benson, an Army reservist, picked up the gun after Gum Spring resident David Cash Raymond, 20, brought it out and, insisting it was unloaded, put it to his own head and pulled the trigger with no effect. “Raymond put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger twice,” said Agnew. After Raymond put the gun down Benson picked it up and fired the fatal shot. Raymond was arrested Saturday and charged with reckless handling of a firearm. He was released and faces an April 1 arraignment in Goochland General District Court. Two young women were charged with underage possession of alcohol. Benson’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Richmond. “Alcohol and guns, excessive drinking, they just don’t mix,” said Agnew Saturday morning. “It’s just senseless and stupid.”

It was cold in Bradley Robinson’s studio in eastern Goochland County last Friday. But a fire was burning in the coal forge Robinson uses to shape steel and the artist’s enthusiasm helped take the edge off the chill. Robinson is a man who appears to have found his calling. “At 32, I discovered this book and way of life,” said Robinson of the day he chanced on a book about Sam Maloof, famous American woodworker. Maloof, in the first line of his book says, “It was 1948. I was thirty-two years of age and I decided I wanted to be a woodworker.” Robinson decided he wanted to work in metal. The former political activist and graphic designer, now 49, calls his discovery of Maloof’s book “serendipitous. “I always wanted to work with my hands,” he explained, as he demonstrated how the heat of his traditional coal forge turns a steel bar into red hot malleable material that can be shaped by the metal smith. Robinson has been working in his Goochland studio since 2009, working mostly “to the trade” Contributed Photo as he calls it, with architects, designers and cusA decorative garden gate illustrates the artistry tom builders. The combined effort of the history department at Goochland High School and the Goochland County Electoral Board to register students to vote has been a success, according to those associated with the project. Erin Yearout-Patton, who teaches government at GHS, said the upcoming election in November will be the fourth for the voter registration project. “We do this in the fall every year so that we can get the kids registered who would be eligible for the November election,” she said. “We make sure by the time they’ve graduated we’ve given them at least two opportunities to register to vote.” One of the primary reasons for her getting involved in the voter registration project, Yearout-Patton said, was that she discovered that a significant number of students in her advanced placement government class were not familiar with the voter regis-

tration process. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the program for the students is visiting the Registrar’s Office, YearoutPatton said. The project has been a collaborative effort between school officials, the Electoral Board, the Board of Supervisors and the Registrar’s Office, YearoutPatton said. Students who are involved in the voter registration project meet with Herb Griffith, chairman of the Electoral Board, who teaches them about the voting process, Yearout-Patton said. The students also have an opportunity to meet with their representative on the Board of Supervisors, who helps them to understand issues on the ballot and local and state election laws, Yearout-Patton said. The Supervisors also teach the students about “the role of local government in their lives and how important it is and how they can actually have a voice,” she said. Yearout-Patton said she realized the importance of voting when she was a student in Dan Snellings’ government class at Floyd County High School. “It’s our voice and I just want our students to know that they have a voice and they matter and they can

make a difference in our country,” she said. The project to register students to vote has gone well, Griffith said. “We think that the informal arrangement has been reasonably successful, but we also believe that a more formal program can be even more successful both socially and educationally for the students and the elections community,” Griffith said. “Approximately 30 students have registered to vote in each of the past years. We hope to do better.” Like Yearout-Patton, Griffith also believes that the

voter registration project provides students with a valuable learning experience. “I think that the Goochland school system and the Electoral Board are persuaded that well-prepared students become intelligent and discerning voters,” he said. “And remember that Goochland County has been the highest percentage voter turnout in the Presidential elections of 2008 and 2012 in the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.” The response of students who have participated in the project has been positive, Griffith added. “The feedback from students that we think is most important is that they have shown an interest in becoming sworn Officers of Election and the students who have been Officers of Election have done a remarkably fine job and are real assets on election day,” he said.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
March 28, 2013
Too much or not enough Debt is what I’m talking about. Reading the Moneywise section in last Sunday’s Richmond Times-Dispatch I was struck by two separate articles on household borrowing and the contrast they demonstrated. According to one story from Bloomberg News, it seems young folks are not borrowing as much money as they used to and some analysts think that could be a bad thing. See, the economy depends on people, including youngsters, spending more money than they have and the author also worried that since fewer young people between 18 and 24 even carry a credit card, they’re not establishing a credit history. A history they’ll need if they apply for a big loan, say like a mortgage, in the future. Further on in the section was an article by Tom Lauricella, this one about older folks approaching retirement still carrying mortgage and installment debt. Seems that among homeowners 75 years old or older, almost 25 percent still had a mortgage or other debt tied to their home! That’s frightening for a population group that has little ability to increase their income. Optimally, these people should have borrowed a lot less or lived more frugally so they could enter retirement debt free. The two articles seem to point out a fundamental contradiction in our national attitude toward

spending, saving and borrowing. Over and over we’re told that consumer spending constitutes 70 percent of the economy. But if people had acted responsibly by living within their means before the great recession, the economy would not have boomed as it did during the first half of the last decade. It’s enough to make one’s head swim but par for the course for anyone reading articles on the economy, the stock market or personal finance issues. On any given day you can normally find assorted experts giving contradictory advice as to whether one should be in or out of the market, save more or borrow more, retire earlier or later, you name it. But right now if I were a youngster just out of college on the first job, I sure would be cautious about taking on debt. Although I’d certainly have a credit card, I’d be judicious about how I used it. And I’d start saving as soon as I got that first paycheck. Too bad all the commonsense advice, although somewhat contradictory at times, that’s available to private households on the financial pages can’t be converted into something Congress and the president could understand and act on. Those folks just seem to spend money like they can print as much as they want. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Open letter to the Board of Supervisors Dear Goochland Board of Supervisors: On March 5, I was more than a little surprised when you allowed Dennis Pryor to prosecute his gentle war against his neighbors by granting him a Conditional Use Permit. The Goochland residents rallying against allowing Dover Hall to become a Bed and Breakfast and Event Center outnumbered those in favor by a margin of 3 to 1. Furthermore, it was obvious that you did not have enough information before you, unless you had information that was not shared with the public, to make a reasonable decision. This lack of information includes details to determine the effect of such a business on 1) surrounding property values, 2) the local environment, 3) the roads and other infrastructure, and 4) the general rural lifestyle that residents currently enjoy. Quoting the Goochland County Board of Supervisors Mission Statement, your job is “preserving, enhancing, and perpetuating the unique and economic union of our County” and “to ensure that all deci-
sions are made in the best interest of the people.” You fell way short on both areas. The land on which Dover Hall sits was zoned to exclude commercial interests so as to fulfill the first statement. Granting the CUP violated that statement. Furthermore, granting the CUP so that one individual can recover losses created by his own decisions at the expense of his neighbors violates the second. Mr. Alvarez said in his closing comments that he felt “Dover Hall is a jewel that will attract economic development”. Does he not realize that the reason people have chosen to live in this particular part of Goochland County is so that they can live in a quiet, peaceful, and rural environment? Does the Board listen to what their constituents say? There are areas in Goochland County where economic growth is welcomed. The area surround Dover Hall isn’t one of them. I have come to expect this kind of short sightedness from our representatives in Washington D.C. They are too discounted from the people they serve to learn the salient details. You have no such excuse. The people you serve stood in front of you and
listened to their concerns, well funded concerns, which you brushed aside. I ask you to please respond by making public your well-founded reasons for making what appears to be a careless and preferential decision. Niels Hagglund Manakin Sabot

Medical professionals urge concussion vigilance By Jodi Deal jdeal@mechlocal.com
During his junior year of high school, Ivan Schwartz made two big goals in the final minutes of a championship hockey game – an achievement he can’t remember. That night, Schwartz also got his face slammed into the glass by a blow to the back of his head. As he woozily looked at his coach, he heard words that have been said on many a rink, court and field: “Son, you just got your bell rung. Now get back out there.” Although he likely suffered a concussion, Schwartz was okay. There were no long-standing effects from the incident and Schwartz eventually went on to become administrative director of sports medicine for Bon Secours Virginia Health System. But the outcome could have been much more serious. That’s why he and his staff are on a mission to spread the word: Concussions can be deadly, and aren’t to be taken lightly. About 200 coaches, parents and athletes gathered at the new St. Francis Watkins Centre physical therapy clinic on Monday, March 19, to bust myths about brain injuries and try to change attitudes on the field, on the sidelines and in the stands about what to do when an athlete takes a blow to the head. Contact to Honey Bear Willie Lanier had quite a career in the National Football League: 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, including a Super Bowl win, eight Pro Bowls and NFL’s Man of the Year title in 1972. Lanier, who is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is an outspoken advocate for football safety.

Former NFL player Willie Lanier, left, and Powhatan High School athletic trainer Mike Puglia take a question from the crowd during a discussion on athletic concussions.
When he was drafted in 1967, Lanier became the first African American middle linebacker in NFL history. That left him feeling a lot of pressure to achieve, and he went at the game with all his might. Rough and tumble tactics like launching himself headlong into the opposition quickly earned him the nickname “Contact.” Just five games into his first season, Lanier slammed his head into the knee of a San Diego Chargers fullback. His ears rang. The field was wobbly. But Lanier kept playing. “I was never down, never out, never missed a play,” Lanier told the crowd at the concussion conference. After another week of practice, the team had a home game against Houston. Lanier collapsed on the sidelines and awoke two hours later staring into a big light in the emergency room thinking about the severity of what had just happened to him. Years later, he learned that his heart had stopped three times while he
was being transported to the hospital. Lanier missed two games. He started having vertical double vision, which flared up during his first game back on the field. That’s when he headed to the Mayo Clinic for further evaluation. The diagnosis? A previously undiagnosed subdural hematoma. That’s a bleed between the brain and the skull that puts pressure on delicate brain tissue, often proving fatal. “I survived by God’s grace,” Lanier said. After that, Lanier said he seriously debated whether to keep playing. He eventually made a pact with himself: If he was going to play, he was going to play it safe. Gone were the days of brash leaps at the other team. Lanier totally changed his playing style, taking care to know where other players and the ball were at all times. Instead of hitting other players, he blocked them with his body in a big bear hug. No
longer did his teammates call him “Contact.” Lanier was now known as “Honey Bear.” “I barely had a hangnail for the next 10 years,” Lanier said. For the rest of his career, he only missed half of a single game. Sit them out Until recent years, the prevailing wisdom was that a concussion resulted in unconsciousness. Players who remained conscious after a hard hit were told to shake it off and keep playing. That’s no longer the case, and safety advocates are working hard to change the culture. “When in doubt, sit them out,” said Mike Puglia, a certified athletic trainer who works at Powhatan High School. In Virginia, it’s actually the law that any student athlete displaying one single symptom of a concussion must be removed from the game, Puglia said. A coach or a parent can’t be expected to carry out a full medical evaluation of an ath-
nausea or vomiting, vision problems, ringing in the ears, irritability, high emotion, difficulty concentrating and difficulty remembering things. Patients also can report feeling dazed, confused, slowed down, drowsy or “in a fog.” Those who attended the concussion conference got laminated cards with symptom lists and questions aimed at testing memory and cognitive function. Athletes can be asked to repeat strings of numbers and words and questions like “Which half is it?” “Who scored last?” and “Did we win the last game?” Recovery time is extremely important, Dr. Stacey Epps, a neurologist, said. “You don’t want a second injury while the brain is still vulnerable,” Epps said. He explained that concussion symptoms come from a “short circuit” in the brain, after which cells’ ability to produce energy and their need for energy are mismatched. The only way to fix that is rest, Roberts said. That doesn’t just mean staying away from sports – it means no television, no Facebook, no texting and no schoolwork until symptoms are completely gone. In most cases, that takes seven to 14 days. “If you pulled a hamstring, Spotting the signs “If there’s anything that’s you wouldn’t run a marathon,” not working right, call 911,” Roberts said. Puglia said. That goes for athPrevention letes who lose consciousness, if ShanaeNorman, theAthletic even for a second. They can spot slight changes in behavior that a doctor might miss. Dr. Jeff Roberts agreed, noting that a possible concussion patient must be very carefully watched for changes in condition. “You need to make sure they’re not acting any more strange that usual,” Roberts joked. Dr. Phillip Sherrod, who is the team physician for VCU’s women’s soccer team, pointed out that athletes will often conceal their condition from parents, coaches and medical professionals. One of his soccer players waited three weeks to tell him she was having concussion symptoms, which can only be treated with physical and mental rest. “She had exams,” Sherrod said, shaking his head. “It took us four months to get her better.” Concussion symptoms are widely varied and can be hard to spot, Puglia said. “Your concussion will not look like her concussion, and the concussion you had last year might not be like the one you’ll have tomorrow.”

Flucos take advantage of GHS’ unseasoned arms By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent
Wet weather and field conditions have left Goochland High School’s varsity baseball pitching staff largely untested. Those arms were sorely tested Friday when Fluvanna came to town for what was only the Bulldogs’ second game of the season. As they did a week earlier, the Flucos made Goochland pay for its lack of seasoning. Fluvanna scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning against the Bulldogs’ third pitcher, sophomore Joe Cutchins, to overtake Goochland. They then held off a late Bulldog rally to finish with a 7-5 victory. Goochland’s plan all along was to rotate through several pitchers to give them some time on the mound – some-
thing they had not had much of because of the weather. “We were trying to give all our pitchers some work because we haven’t been on the field in a week,” said Goochland coach Wes Farkas. “Sometimes you don’t have your best stuff. [Cutchins] threw a couple of good pitches and every once in a while he got one in, left it in there, and they drilled it.” Cutchins followed seniors Trace Nixon and Josh Driver, who each pitched two innings. Nixon gave up two hits and a walk, struck out three and gave up one run. Driver likewise gave up a run on three hits and a walk. He struck out one. Cutchins opened the fifth with walks to Jovan Burton and Mason Barringer, then gave up back-to-back singles: a 2-run single hit to the Flucos’ Jalen Harrison and run-scor-

ing rap to Bowen Reed. One strikeout later, Reed scored on a double by Max Turner. After that, senior Cole Stark was brought in to stop the Fluvanna outburst. While Turner scored on a fielders’ choice, Stark walked two, struck out three and allowed no further Fluco runs. It was Goochland’s second straight loss to Fluvanna, who, due to weather postponements, is the only team they’ve played two weeks into the 2013 season. The Bulldogs (0-2) led in both games before watching them slip away. “We can’t get momentum in either direction right now,” Farkas said. “Both games we came out. We were in both games, but we can’t put them away, we can’t hold onto a lead. … It’s a bit frustrating, but at the same time our guys just need more reps. They just need to be on the field.” Goochland led by two runs through the first three innings, but as the Flucos (3-0) came to bat in the fourth, they knew they had plenty of time to catch up. “We could have put our heads in the sand like an ostrich and hid,” said Fluvanna

can prevent concussions, Epps added. “Helmets prevent skull fractures,” Epps said. “Have you ever had something in your back seat, then slammed on your brakes and had it come all the way to the front? That’s what happens to your brain. It keeps going. It’s physics.” Accidents are going to happen in sports, Norman stressed. The best thing parents, coaches and athletes can do is learn about the risk,

coach Mike Sheridan. “But we battled. We found a way to get the job done, and that’s what good teams do. Fluvanna had an unlikely example of that in its catcher, Tyler Dawson, who did not expect to play Friday. “The kid who caught today was sitting in class planning take all injuries seriously and practice both good safety and good sportsmanship. That means no encouraging kids to “play dirty,” no throwing bats after hitting a ball, no high kicks in soccer and no running around with helmets that are unstrapped. “The kids look up to us – you’ve got to do your part,” Puglia said. Coaches can’t make athletes play when they’re impaired, parents can’t yell at coaches for taking kids out of the game, and kids can’t be allowed to say they’re okay when they’re clearly not.
on catching tonight in the JV ball game,” Sheridan said. “We had a kid get hurt, and at 1:30 an assistant who teaches at the high school walks into class and says, ‘By the way son, you’re coming with us.’ And he threw two people out of the two people who were trying to steal.” One of those caught was Goochland’s first batter, center fielder Jake King. He opened the bottom of the first with a single, but was caught attempting to steal second. Starke, who started the game at shortstop, walked and scored on a double by designated hitter Forrest Witt. Witt later scored on an error to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Goochland extended its lead with two outs in the second. Starke reached on an error. Witt singled him to second, and Driver drove him home with another single. The Bulldogs managed a rally in the sixth. Shortstop Reid Chenault opened with a
walk. He advanced to second on Scott Owens’ single, and both scored on a double by Starke. Starke survived a scare on the mound in the top of the sixth. Burton opened the inning for Fluvanna with a walk. Mason Barringer reached on an error and Jalen Harrison was hit by a pitch. But Starke settled down and stopped the Flucos with two strikeouts and a fly-out to left field. Goochland hosts Nottoway on Thursday at 5 p.m. then goes on the road for most of the month of April. The Bulldogs will not play at home again until an Apr. 16 matchup with Buckingham then play their only other home game of the month hosting Central on Apr. 23. NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Extension service holds invasive plant and insect seminar By Jason Fisher
A public educational seminar was held on February 28 in Goochland County for concerned citizens. Jason Fisher, District Natural Resources Agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension and guest Chuck Wright with Virginia Department of Forestry hosted the program for over 35 participants interested in learning more about forest insect pests and invasive plants of economic importance. In Virginia, nearly 10 percert of our forestland (1.6 million acres) is impacted negatively by invasive plant species alone. Topics included updates on Emerald Ash Borer, Thousand Cankers
Disease of walnut, Ailanthus tree and multiflora rose control to name a few. This program and other programs are offered to help landowners become aware of forest threats and to receive the most up to date research information on how to best deal with these issues in forestland and residential areas around the Commonwealth. One resource that is helpful for forest insects updates and is offered by USDA is www.hungrypests.com , along with distribution maps on insects and plants through http://pest.ceris.purdue.edu/ index.php . The public is invited to stay abreast of similar upcoming landowner education programs through the Virginia Forest Landowner
Education Program housed through Virginia Tech at w w w. f o r e s t u p d a t e . f r e c . vt.edu/, particularly the statewide 5th Annual Landowner Retreat set for April 26-28 in Appomattox County, VA. A second Retreat is scheduled for late summer so stay tuned. For questions or more information, contact Jason Fisher, Extension Agent Natural Resources in Central District at 434-476-2147 or jasonf@vt.edu. Virginia Cooperative Extension provides researchbased solutions for the citizens of the Commonwealth through research conducted at its two land-grant colleges, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University.
