Kaitlyn King admires the iris at the 9th annual Spring Garden Fest at the Goochland campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds last Saturday afternoon. King, a horticulture student at JSR, was one of more than 600 visitors who turned out on a perfect day for the event sponsored by the Goochland - Powhatan Master Gardeners Association. Master Gardener Linda Toler, coordinator for the event, was pleased. “It’s the best turnout we’ve ever had,” she said. This year’s festival including a new children’s garden tent, she said, in addition to always popular workshops, of which some of the most popular were classes on succulents, bonsai and Shitake mushrooms.

Goochland veterinarian Beth Schooley teared up as she talked about what being a mentor at Byrd Elementary School means to her. “I don’t have any kids of my own,” she explained. “It’s a very rewarding experience,” she said. Schooley was wearing a paper wrist corsage colored in crayon and carrying four letters from girls at the school thanking her for being a mentor.
It was all a part of last Friday’s lunch organized to thank the 15 or so mentors who meet with more than 30 students each Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. The boys program has been going on for two years. A girls program was added this year. “I think of them as step granddads,” said fourth-grader Steven Parrish, as he worked on downing his third sub sandwich, provided courtesy of the Goochland Rotary Club, which provides mentors along with Second Union Baptist Church and Forest Grove Christian Church. “Seeing how the young men have developed over the school year has definitely been rewarding to the mentors,” said mentor Calvin Hopkins. “It helps them become better citizens.” Deacon Curtis Parrish of nearby
Second Union Baptist Church, said he has seen a difference since the mentoring program started. “I can see an improvement in their Sunday School work,” he said. Byrd principal James Hopkins praised the program. “It’s a great way to involve county members with our children,” he said, and said the cliché “it takes a village” applied to the way the program worked. School counselor Kathy Albert, who coordinates the girls’ program, said it gives children a chance to learn how to talk to grown ups about leadership and character. Maykayla Pannell and Ashley Athey sat down to eat their lunch with mentor Dolores Nicholson, who joined see Mentors > page 5

Neil Burch, now in his second year as drama teacher at Goochland High School, wanted to fill the seats for this weekend’s performances of the drama department’s spring production. “I wanted to do a show well-known to the public, he said during a break in rehearsal last week. He picked “Beauty and the Beast, subject of a 1991 Walt Disney animated film. “Every performance should be sold out, said Burch of his goal for the play, which stars Russell Gambino as the Beast and Sara Hardy as Belle. In the play, Belle’s father finds an enchanted castle in which a creature, once a cruel prince, now lives.
His only hope for salvation is the love of a beautiful girl. Gambino, a senior, has been part of nine or 10 productions at Goochland High School. He said this one has the best set design of any he’s been in. “I hope we can pull it all together, he said but added confidently, “If people are looking for a good night out they’ll find it here. Hardy, a sophomore, has appeared in “Annie and “Grease. “It’s a classic, she said of the story and the popular movie. “All the little girls wanted to grow up to be a princess. “It’s going to be really fun to put on, she said of the musical. Gambino urged everyone to bring their youngsters to
the production. “It opens them up to the theater, he explained. “Beauty and the Beast will run for three performances, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Skateboarders to show off skills at Goochland X-Fest By Korey Hughes Special Correspondent

only sport that will be attempted during the gathering. Stamey said that Arena Racing will have a collection of its cars on site for participants to see and experience and that BMX bicycle and archery demoes will also take place on site. A number of skate-themed vendors will be there to show off their wares. As of this writing, retailers such as Bakwuds Skateboards, StrangeHouse Skate Shop and Vamp Skateboards have already committed to participate. Other sponsors including Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Patriot Motorsports will also be on hand. In addition, the U.S. Army will bring in one of its rock walls for any attendees who are brave enough to scale it. And, best of all, the Skateboard Action Committee will provide free skating, pizza, drinks and other refreshments, but the food and beverages will be first-come, firstserved while supplies last. So, if you’re a fan of extreme sports events, the Goochland XFest should provide an unforgettable experience on Saturday afternoon. At any rate, Stamey said that skateboarding’s maintained presence in popular media
is just one of a few reasons why it continues to be a popular pastime today. “I think there are a couple of reasons for it,” Stamey said. “I think that young folks are always looking for something to do that they’re good at.” “Skateboarding is an outlet for that. Also, you have parents passing that along to their kids, just like a dad tossing a baseball to his son, and some folks skate with their kids.” “Also, the explosion of marketing and televised events, such as the X-Games on ESPN, is helping as well. You have a whole generation of people being exposed to these types of sports on a consistent basis.” For more information about the Goochland X-Fest, please visit http://www.co.goochland. us or the Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities Facebook page.

Grinds, kick flips and ollies are some of the astounding skateboard stunts that can be seen at the Goochland X-Fest this Saturday at 522 Skate Park, also known as Skate 522, in Goochland from 12 noon to 4 p.m. 2013 marks the sixth year that a skate-themed event will be hosted in Goochland. Director of Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities Derek Stamey explained the happening’s purpose. “The X-Fest is a celebration and an exhibition of alternative sports for the folks in Goochland County, centered around the county’s only public skate park, Skate 522,” Stamey said. “The event is designed to primarily promote skateboarding within the county, but it also adds elements of biking, rock climbing and other alternative sports.” The X-Fest is presented by the Skateboard Action Committee, Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities and the Goochland Family YMCA. Stamey said an event steering committee that includes representatives from each of the aforementioned organizations works together to host the event. About 200 people attended last year’s X-Fest and Stamey expects that number to be eclipsed this year. Competitive skating will be judged by a panel during the event, and prizes will be awarded. As Stamey explained, there will be competitions and demonstrations for various age groups and skill levels. “Skaters will be given a chance to show our judges their skills, but everyone skates away a winner,” Stamey said. And, skateboarding isn’t the

This is the time of year that we start thinking about home repair projects put off during colder weather. On the other hand, perhaps we are frustrated that the hot water heater quit working. Even worse, we might be thinking about how old the roof is and finally make the call to get some estimates. These are the kinds of repairs that homeowners must address to keep their families and their investments safe. However, if you are struggling to put food on the table or to buy life-saving medications even the simplest preventive maintenance can become unaffordable. In fact, what may start as a small insignificant repair can quickly become a major safety hazard when the homeowner cannot afford $25 or $50 to purchase supplies. That is when Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services can help. Low-income Goochland homeowners can apply for help through the Emergency Home Repair program by calling 804-556-6260. The purpose of the program is to ensure that homes are safe to live in thereby preventing homelessness and unsafe living situations, and allowing older adults to stay in their homes. Typical home repairs include but are not limited to building wheelchair ramps, repairing roofs, plumbing problems, and unsafe holes in floors or walls. Some jobs

require the services of professionals, but a core group of committed volunteers offer their time, tools and talent to complete many projects. Here is what one grateful program recipient had to say in a thank you card. “I would like to thank you for the work done in my kitchen, the sink, floor and door. It is very much appreciated. I can really enjoy the kitchen again. Not worrying about if I’ll fall through the floor or if something would crawl from under on me. The work-
ers did a wonderful job. Thank you.” If you are interested in putting some of your own skills to work or if you would like to learn more about this program, you are invited to join GFCFS on Friday May 10 at Noon at Grace Episcopal Church. Come and enjoy a brief presentation by one of our valued volunteers, and meet Heather Salmon, the new Housing Program Coordinator. Lunch will be provided Call Heather at 556-6260 to RSVP for lunch.

Farmer’s Market opens May 4 Contributed Report
The Goochland Farmer’s Market (GFM) will open for the season on Saturday, May 4, at Grace Episcopal Church from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Farmers and crafters will be selling their products each Saturday through October. Moe Marchetti, the GFM manager, said that a new feature of this
year’s market will be “Ask the Expert.” Each week an expert in some field will be on hand to answer questions. The first market will probably feature Dr. Bayer, a local veterinarian from the Patterson Veterinary Hospital. Subsequent markets may have experts in farming, yoga, herb gardening, cooking and other subjects suggested by market
customers. The GFM, sponsored by The Center for Rural Culture, is still taking applications for vendors. A vendor, by registering for the GFM, will also be entitled to sell at the Powhatan Farmer’s Market on Thursday afternoons in Powhatan Courthouse. Please contact Moe Marchetti at 804-955-7986 or farmersmarketgoochland@gmail.com.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
May 2, 2013
Some good news Bombing in Boston, budget troubles in Washington, unemployment, international dangers and uncertainties -- these are the types of things that seem to dominate the headlines these days. “If it bleeds it leads,” goes the old cliché. And it’s true; sometimes bad news seems to drive out the good. So, on the occasions when I have the chance to see something that seems truly positive and noteworthy I feel obliged and, indeed, fortunate to be able to give it good play in the Gazette. Just such an opportunity presented itself last Friday when I was invited to a celebration of the mentoring program at Byrd Elementary School. (See our story on page 1). Now in its second year, it pairs volunteer mentors from two local churches and the Goochland Rotary Club with students at the school. As noted in the article, it’s hard to tell who benefits more, the mentors or the students. But it doesn’t really matter, because it’s obvious to this observer that both benefit greatly. That’s just the kind of story that sometimes get’s short shrift in this day and age, with so much angst about. But not this week. If there is one thing I’ve grown to believe over a couple decades of reporting in the Richmond Suburban Newspapers family of community publications, it’s that

there is a constant undercurrent of positive neighborhood-based involvement in Goochland. This also holds true in the other localities we cover and, if you ask my opinion, in just about any functioning community anywhere. Good people doing good things to make their community better places to live – that’s what it’s all about. And it’s all the time -- year in, year out. It’s useful to once in a while come right out and say it when you see this kind of voluntary contribution by people of good will. I mean, it’s hard to be as pessimistic as one might be if one only paid attention to the bad news. It could be just a matter of temperament but I like to think that the good outweighs the bad, all things considered in this world. Is the glass half full or half empty? You take your pick. But when I see folks donating their time to help others (and this mentoring program is just one example of what goes on in Goochland), it’s heartening and a great antidote to all the gloom and doomsayers one can read elsewhere. So, for this writer, as long as I get to hear and write about stories like the Byrd Elementary School mentoring program, my glass will always be more than half full. -Ken Odor

County elementary students help ‘Plant It.’ Photo by Ken Odor
Goochland Elementary School third-grader Blake Smith waters a dogwood tree that he, his classmates and Dominion Forester Mark Bennett planted last week at GES. Thousands of Virginia students took part in Dominion’s Project Plant It around the state last Friday on Arbor Day. At GES, students from that school were joined by Randolph Elementary School students, planting dogwoods provided by Dominion and learning about conservation and forest fire prevention. They also took part in a scavenger hunt for products made from trees.
Letters to the Editor Gun control legislation would not protect us I read and reread Mr. Odor’s editorial in this week’s paper and indeed, I also reflected on the failure of the U.S. Senate to pass even a modest bill. Though the Boston terrorists used homemade explosives to do the most damage, they also managed to kill and wound with pistols, apparently obtained illegally. Some major gun activist organizations were for this bill, because they felt that the reciprocity section made sense and that this legislation in toto was the best that was possible at this time. The legislation that failed would not have protected us against criminals or terrorists obtaining weapons. Is there anything that would? You hear about assault type weapons, often times the word type is omitted for making some dramatic point. The procedural aspects of the U.S. Senate vote foretold its failure. Ask why did Sen. Reid require a super majority vote, rather than a simple majority vote, which would have passed? What could we the citizens do? I live out in the very rural part of
the county and gun ownership is very common. I can hear semi-automatic fire on the weekends, hopefully reflecting target practice. Lately, I have also heard automatic weapon fire as have some of my neighbors. Automatic weapons are illegal. It is up to citizens to report this to authorities so that they can take action. One of my points deals with enforcement of current laws, not simply the police but the courts passing laws for the sake of doing so in a way that makes some folks feel good has never worked. In addition we have a problem in reporting and dealing with people who are truly mentally disturbed obtaining weapons. What was the basis for Virginia Tech’s or the Colorado University police’s inaction in dealing with individuals who should have been institutionalized, not just seeing a therapist? We have many important problems in this country to deal with. We just need to elect folks that are both serious and capable of enacting laws that are really enforced. Richard Carchman Columbia

• Tonya Price, associate specialist for 4-H youth development • Glenda Snyder, senior Extension agent emerita Since 1994, Virginia 4-H has provided CHARACTER COUNTS! training and support for schools and communities statewide and other in states. The character education program was developed by the Josephson Institute of Ethics and incorporates six pillars of character into positive decision making. In 2004, Snyder was invited to Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, by the Partners of the Americas to train school personnel to implement the program. According to a study in 2005, the violence index in Brazilian schools was very high and had been growing at an uncontrollable rate. Snyder and a principal trained 80 school and community repre-
sentatives, and CHARACTER COUNTS! was implemented as a pilot program in local schools. Officials reported positive results such as improved student behavior, a decrease in violence, more respectful behavior, and an increase in the number of parents volunteering. For the past eight years, in-depth training sessions have been conducted by Snyder and members of the Extension team for more than 1,000 teachers, principals, and community leaders, impacting 70,000 students annually. The work has expanded to include a Brazil-Virginia Teachers’ Exchange, trainings in additional locations in Brazil, and an agreement with Virginia Tech and the University of Santa Catarina for a student-faculty exchange for academics, extension, and research. Through the work
of the Joinville and Virginia Rotary clubs, a $42,000 international matching grant was received to support the efforts. “Virginia 4-H faculty have developed sustained, highly effective partnerships in Brazil which have enabled them to train teachers and other community leaders working with youth, positively impacting the character education of thousands,” said Cathy Sutphin, associate director of 4-H youth development. “Partners on each side have a deeper cultural understanding and through continued interaction have expanded programming to include a teacher exchange, and an exchange between judicial judges in each country. Our faculty members describe their work in Brazil as life changing.”

Cougars claw past undefeated Bulldogs 7-1 By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
In his 21 years as Collegiate’s girl’s soccer coach, Bill Rider has learned placing the right player in the right spot at the right time can make all the difference. That experienced philosophy paid off big last Thursday for the Cougars (8-61) in a 7-1 win over previously undefeated Goochland. Collegiate left-winger Jennie Sroba moved to the left wing at her coach’s urging only weeks ago. The senior reinforced Rider’s wisdom with a stellar performance scoring four goals in the victory. “We’ve been trying to find the right place for Jennie this season, so we moved her to left wing thinking we’d find her some more space,” Rider said. “She made that look like a pretty good decision.” The multi-goal performance came as a surprise to
Sroba. “This is the first time for me, so it’s pretty exciting,” she said. “My teammates passed the ball well and it finally started to click for me to get out on the corner and take those shots.” The coach said the team was mentally prepared for a Bulldog squad boasting an undefeated record. “We knew we were facing a tough team when we got here and the girls came out and responded. I credit my girls. They knew this was a good team and they would have to play well and they did.” The Cougars scored early and often as two of Sroba’s goals came in the first half. For Goochland, the Cougars made it a frustrating game that never allowed the Bulldogs to gain momentum or rhythm. “They are fast and good and controlled the ball against us today,” said Coach Tom Reid. “It was a wake up call for us. We didn’t play as well as we’re capa-

NASCAR’s Ryan Reed drives against diabetes By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent
From the time he was four, Ryan Reed knew he wanted to be a professional race car driver. However, when he was 17, he was told he would have to give his dream up. Two years later, the 19-yearold is instead climbing the NASCAR ladder, competing in the Nationwide Series as a driver for Rousch Fenway Racing. In early 2011, Reed left his family in Bakersfield, Calif. to immerse himself in the racing environment of North Carolina. Soon afterward he began feeling unwell. The youth, skinny enough as it was, suddenly began to lose a lot of weight. He was thirsty all the time, even as he had to urinate a lot.
Returning to California, his father, Mark noted his weight loss and thought he should see a doctor. The diagnosis: Type I diabetes. Even worse, his doctor told him he would not be able to race at the professional level. She felt it would be impossible for him to monitor and treat his blood glucose levels in the car. “It was rough. It was definitely devastating,” Reed said. “I think the most devastating part was being told I couldn’t pursue my dream anymore. That was the hardest part for me to understand.” The dangers are not insignificant. “There’s a risk going on a low or a high [blood glucose level],” Ryan said. “If I were to go on a low and – worst-case scenario – pass out and not have control of my race car.
Then you’re in a 800-horsepower machine with 42 other guys around you, there’s definitely some concerns.” With a lot of support from his family, including his mother, Karla, Reed did not waste a lot of time understanding he would have to quit racing, however. “My family was awesome through the whole thing – super supportive,” Reed said “It was a trying time, to try and figure out how to make things work out and live with the disease, and also to not give up on what I worked on for so many years.” Instead of giving up, Reed went back to California and hit the Internet, searching for “diabetes” and “motorsports.” The search paid off. He learned about Charlie Kimball, an see REED, pg. 16 `

Nineteen-year-old NASCAR driver Ryan Reed overcame the obstacle of Type I diabetes to make his Nationwide debut at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night. There are several ways Reed compensates for his disease including the worse-case scenario of needing an insulin injection during a race, when a designated crew member would use an EpiPen-type devise to quickly inject Reed via the target on his leg (above) during a pit stop.

Rivalry lives up to billing between Cougars and Saints By Arthur Utley Special Correspondent
Dull is one adjective that would never be used to describe a softball game between League of Independent Schools rivals Collegiate and St. Catherine’s. Exciting and intense are time-tested descriptors, even if the softball isn’t always pretty. Last Thursday’s meeting between the Cougars and Saints at St. Catherine’s was typical. St. Catherine’s won 7-4, its second victory over the Cougars this season, but not until Collegiate managed to score just two runs from bases loaded with no out situations in the sixth and seventh innings. “You always feel threatened by them. You never feel like you can get comfortable because they can always come back at any time,” St. Catherine’s coach Tara DiGiacomo said. Only once did a team (Collegiate) go three up and three down in an inning (top of the third). Extra outs, the bane of teams everywhere, were plentiful. St. Catherine’s committed five errors, and Collegiate four. Free passes didn’t help either. Saints hurler Molly Phillips walked seven Cougars, including Rachel Barbieri three times. Collegiate starter Katie McCauley allowed three walks. The Cougars opened the scoring with two outs in the first on a walk, a passed ball, an error and infield hit by Emily Shinn. A walk, groundout and two passed balls helped the Cougars score their second run in the second inning before Phillips settled in. “With Molly, you are going to get some opportunities, it’s what you do with them,” Collegiate coach Robby Turner said. “She pitches really well when you give her a lead. They did a good job of getting that for her. We had to play from behind, and that’s tough.” The Saints responded with

a run in the first after leadoff batter Anne Szymendera walked and Caroline Vath followed with the first of her three singles. Szymendera scored on an error in the outfield. St. Catherine’s added two runs in the bottom of the second with the first coming because of one of those extra outs. Second-team All-Metro catcher Mallory Knighton of Collegiate lost concentration and dropped a foul pop off the bat of Lale Herguner, who then stroked a double to left center to drive in Kristina Caesar who had walked. Vath drove in Herguner with a single. Meanwhile, Knighton was responsible for all three Saints outs by catching three popups. The Saints scored once in the third and three times in the fourth when eight batters came to the plate. They had nine hits against McCauley, who gave way to Shinn after a walk in the bottom of the fifth. “We definitely put our bats on the ball all day,” DiGiacomo said. “That’s what we need to do to move the runners. They did a
out. Szymendera dropped Madison Burfeind’s soft liner to second and a run scored, but Szymendera recovered and threw Burfeind out before the rally ended on Knighton’s fly out to center. Collegiate loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh on two errors and a fielder’s choice that produced a run and no out, but a Saints double play engineered by Szymendera and a ground out to first ended the game. “We got some runners on base and didn’t get them in,” Turner said. “I think we were one hit away from breaking something open. If we knock a few of them in, it changes things.” Chriscoe and her Saints teammates expected nothing less from their rivals. “Collegiate’s always our big opponent, and it’s a big deal to us,” Chriscoe said. “It was really intense. They never give up. That’s the thing about Collegiate so you have to stay on them the whole game.”
great job with that.” St. Catherine’s was coming off an LIS loss to Covenant, a team the Cougars had just beaten. “Covenant was a little bit of a surprise, but we play them again, and that’s another good game for [where we wind up] in the LIS,” said St. Catherine’s senior Alex Chriscoe, who sin-
gled to drive home the Saints last run. “[The LIS] is all up in the air right now.” DiGiacomo calls the LIS standings “a mess.” Turner, who is looking ahead to the league tournament, said: “I think the LIS this year is such that anybody on any given day can beat another team. You have to bring your “A”
game because you aren’t going to coast by anybody.” St. Catherine’s led the Cougars 7-2 going into the top of the sixth, but Phillips, who had been in control, walked the first two batters and gave up a single to Ellie Fleming to load the bases. Gabby Gelozin hit a bouncer back to Phillips who threw home for the force

the track, Peters has helped a number of other elite athletes, such as Olympic gold medalist swimmer Gary Hall. “She asked me how serious I was and how bad I wanted this,” Reed said. “I told her how badly I wanted it and she was all over it. She was on board and it was probably three or four months after that I was back in a race car.” Reed trains like an elite athlete. His regimen consists of intense exercise; a healthy diet, consisting primarily of chicken breast, whole wheat pasta, fruit and vegetables; and daily monitoring of his blood glucose levels. But that’s not all. On the
track, Reed uses a continuous glucose monitor that transmits his blood glucose level to a digital display on his dashboard. If his glucose concentration gets too high or too low, the display flashes an alert. In the case of an alert, Reed pulls in for a pit stop, and a designated member of the crew uses an EpiPen-like device to deliver an insulin injection to Reed’s left thigh. The injection site is indicated with a yellow, red and white target patch on his fire suit. It allows Reed to continue chasing his dream. On Friday night, Reed made his NASCAR Nationwide debut in the ToyotaCare 250
at Richmond International Raceway. Like his young life, Reed saw highs and lows throughout the race. After starting 15th, Reed worked his way up through the pack. He pitted three times under caution and lost positions when he was blocked into his pit stall. Still Reed did not give up, battling back to rise as high as sixth and finished 16th, but made 31 green flag passes over the course of the race. “There’s a lot of [NASCAR] infrastructure in place to make sure that everyone is safe,” Reed said. “For NASCAR to clear me, it means a lot. It means that me and my doctor are doing a good job.”

More important, he learned of Kimball’s physician, Dr. Anne Peters of the University of Southern California’s Clinical Diabetes Program. “My dad called and got me in to see her,” Reed said. “She was a glimmer of hope. She was everything I needed at the time.” In addition to getting Kimball—the first licensed driver with diabetes in the history of IndyCar—back on
