More than 200 people turned out for the annual American Legion Post 215 Memorial Day Celebration on the Goochland Courthouse Green Monday. One visitor was Goochlander Kelly Browning who said she thought it would be a good idea to bring her two sons, Will, 7 and Sam, 11. “We just wanted to come out and pay tribute,” said Browning. “You know, make sure they know the meaning of Memorial Day.” Will said he’d never been to a Memorial Day ceremony before but he knew what it was about. “It represents the soldiers that died,” he said. Nearby stood U.S. Air Force veteran Kevin Leonard, in fatigues, with his girlfriend Mariah Elliot. “I came to support him and others,” said Elliot. Leonard said

he spent four years at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, working on B-52 bombers. Leonard said the planes, most already several decades old, should be good out to 2050. In his remarks, Post 215 Commander, Maj. Doug Clark, USAR, said he decided to wear his fatigues for the day’s ceremony because it was what he wore on his deployments. “It makes me think of the soldiers that didn’t come back with me,” he said Clark said he knew soldiers today who sacrificed just as much as those from “the greatest generation” that fought WW II but that the difference was that during WW II President Roosevelt insisted on unconditional surrender. “In some instances compromise is not an option,” said Clark, drawing a parallel between the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the terrorsee Memorial Day> 5

Last minute lung transplant saves Goochland man’s life By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

On the darkest of days, when life deals its most serious blows and all hope seems lost, miracles can happen. March 9 didn’t start out well for Goochland couple Bruce and Mary-Taliaferro Keeney. Diagnosed in 2010 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Bruce’s condition had deteriorated to a critical state when the couple prepared for bed the night before. “On Friday, Bruce was very sick and just could not get enough oxygen into his body. His breathing was very labored and he was basically dying,” said Mary- Taliaferro. In what became a race against time, Bruce had qualified for and been placed at the top of University

of Virginia hospital’s lung transplant program, but as the evening progressed, it didn’t appear the 59-year old could hold out and win that race. His wife called Goochland Rescue about 2 a.m. and Bruce was rushed to West Creek Emergency Room, where staff struggled to stabilize the patient. “In going to the West Creek Emergency Room, our plan was for them to stabilize Bruce and then get him transported to UVa, for stabilization by his doctors if possible,” Mary-Taliaferro said. Their two sons and wives joined the Keeneys at West Creek, and once transportation was arranged via MCV helicopter, eldest son Bo headed to Charlottesville to meet his dad when he arrived. Finding homes for dogs has been a labor of love for Penny Pearsall and other volunteers of FLAG – For the Love of Animals in Goochland. “We are a humane rescue organization and we take dogs from surrounding counties in Virginia,” said Pearsall, who is president of FLAG. “We’ve taken some from out of state that were desperate and find homes for them.” Pearsall, 71, got involved in FLAG soon after it started in 1985. The previous president of the group asked her if she would complete the remaining six months of her term, Pearsall said. “That was 25 years ago,” Pearsall added. “I’ve been doing it ever since.”

While she would like for someone to take over the reins, Pearsall said it’s been rewarding to be a part of FLAG. “Seeing these dogs getting the homes and the people that write you back or e-mail you and tell you how good they are or send you pictures,” she said is heartwarming. “You know they’ve got permanent homes. We have a very low return rate. Last year we brought in 134 animals and we adopted 131 and we only had three returns and those were legitimate returns.” FLAG is located on a private farm in Manakin-Sabot and has been at its current location for about 12 years, Pearsall said, adding that it’s an all-volunteer organization. “We have about 40 that

come out here and do the pens and I’ve got another 15 or 20 people that do followups and screen people and interview them when they call to adopt,” she said. There is a $150 adoption fee, which includes spaying or neutering, making sure the dog is healthy and attaching a microchip to them, Pearsall said. “So when they get the dog, it’s ready to go basically,” Pearsall said, adding that most of the dogs they rescue come from animal shelters. “It’s really hard to have to make [a] decision which dog you can take when there are so many out there, but you have to make decision on the ones that you know that you can find a home for,” see FLAG > page 7

Goochland office hosts Extension Extravaganza Contributed Report

The Goochland Extension office is hosting an Extension Extravaganza June 8 from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College: Goochland Campus. The purpose of this event is to promote all the wonderful work that the Extension office staff and volunteers do in the community. The staff has planned a fun filled day with activities and programs for all ages while highlighting the four Extension program areas of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Science, 4H Youth Development and Community Viability.

Throughout the day the public can come visit with the Extension staff, Extension volunteers and 4-Hers while we showcase programs and educational materials through classes, tours, displays and much more. The following workshops are being offered throughout the day; How to Get Creative with Succulent Plants, Agricultural Apps for Smart Phone and iPads, Fish Cage Production and Construction, Tree identification using an iPad , weeds and Poisonous plants to horses and Native butterflies and native host plants. These classes require preregistration due to class size restrictions. Please contact

Schools get CarMax Foundation grant award Contributed Report

The Goochland County Public Schools have been awarded a $5,000 grant through the CarMax Foundation. The grant funds will be used to support construction of an outdoor learning environment at Goochland Elementary School. Specifically, the outdoor space will include a

roofed pavilion and readers’ theater, a workspace with tables and seating, a unique math garden. Superintendent, James Lane, and Goochland Elementary principal, Mrs. McCay, are thrilled about the opportunities this project will offer to students. The entire GCPS school community expresses its enthusiastic support for the partnership with the CarMax Foundation.

New business opens in Manakin-Sabot Contributed Report

There is a new business in Manakin Sabot. Jeff Hooper, a 27-year veteran of the financial services industry has opened a new State Farm office at the crossroads of route 250 and Manakin Road. The office is only the second location for State Farm in the county and it is positioned to take advantage of the commercial and residential growth expected in that area

“We looked at several locations in Central Virginia and chose Goochland as a great place to live and work.” said Hooper. “My wife and I love the area plan to build a home here in the near future.” Working with Hooper is Ricky Gibson, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech and Brittany Harris who is a native of Goochland County and graduated from Goochland High School in 2009.

“My character starts off really proper, a southern style Miss Perfect,” said former Goochland High School drama teacher Gemma Smith recently, talking about her starring role in the premiere episode of the new TV series “Southern Fried Homicide” in a telephone interview from New York. But her character doesn’t stay that way long. Smith portrays Susie Newsom in the reenactment segments of a story with multiple murders, southern style. Newsom, played by Smith, goes off the deep end. “She leaves her husband and has an affair with her cousin and there’s some mental instability there,” explains Smith. Ahem! “Southern Fried Homicide” is a creation of the Investigation Discovery channel, which features a number of crime shows. Playing Susie Newsom was a new experience for Smith. “Normally I play very warm, caring characters.,” said Smith. “This character sort of starts that way, very proper and polite and then has a whole journey where she is gets rougher and tougher and not quite stable, so that was really fun.” Smith said her three years as drama teacher and theater director at Goochland High School (2008-2011) have helped her in her

acting career. Smith said the business and organizational skills she learned working at GHS gave her experience that other actors may not have. “Up here in New York you have so many creative actors,” said Smith. “I feel more business savvy, I think that’s helped a lot.” Smith said her goal is to be “a working actor based in New York, meaning I make my entire living off acting alone... I just want to make a living and be respected for it.” Smith said she would love to work in

television but she also has done commercials and various promotional videos and short films and has also appeared in off Broadway productions. “As long as I’m making a living as an actor working in New York City, because I love it here, that’s what I want to be doing,” said Smith. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Fun while it lasted I’ve been thinking about the day I would pen this column for a long time. Ever since I turned 65 last year and signed up for Medicare, the writing was on the wall that some time in the not too distant future I’d be composing my last column for the Goochland Gazette. After almost 30 years working in the community newspaper business, first as a photographer, later as a writer/photographer and finally as the editor, first for the Mechanicsville Local and later the Goochland Gazette, I knew there would eventually come a time when I’d have to call it quits. Now that time has arrived. It’s something I do with very mixed feelings, since I’ve enjoyed so much of the work involved in turning out a Gazette each week. Take a recent afternoon, for instance. I was working on a column while sitting in a local Goochland café, listening to a bunch of fellows strumming their guitars and singing a variety of old tunes while I waited for the start of the evening’s School Board meeting. I was working but having a pretty good time doing it. That sort of describes the life of the itinerant community news editor/photographer/journalist, as they travel about the area they cover, looking for a place to alight where they can pound the key-

board for a spell. No one would do it if they didn’t enjoy it. Over the years the community news business has certainly changed, at least in the technological sense. But the essence has remained the same. It’s all about getting to know the people and the institutions of the area you cover and reflecting that knowledge back to your readers in the pages of the paper, always respecting the fact that they ARE the paper. Because without their participation, both on the news and the business side, you wouldn’t have a job. So farewell and maybe I’ll see you around. Could be I’ll do a little free-lance work every now and again – keeping my hand in so to speak. Still I’ll miss the folks I’ve written about and I’ll miss having the opportunity to watch Goochland County evolve. And while there’s no getting around the fact that it’s definitely time to do it, I still hate cutting that cord. All I can say is it sure was fun while it lasted. -Ken Odor

Letters continued from > page 6 to be told that they “are trying” or that no one applies for the instructors’ positions or someone needs to be certified. I will say that last fall they finally got the equipment that regulates temperature fixed and did put in a sound system in the pool area separate from the rest of the building. Neither or which does any good if you don’t have instructors! The “Silver Sneakers” program has bee discontinued at the Goochland branch. That affects all senior programs. For those who think

these programs are just for a social get together, guess again! Those that participate, particularly in the water programs, do so because they cannot exercise any other way. They do it to strengthen their backs, legs and core muscles so they can stand up straight and walk! I would also like to address the scheduled times for these classes. There are several lists of names of participants in the water classes. To my knowledge none of us have been contacted to ask us if we would like to start classes a little later than 8:30 a.m. Right now it is almost a moot question since they have taken the dome off. I got a call at 7:45 am. this morning

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor to tell me that there would be no class today because it is too cold! Duh! The outside temperature was in the 30’s! You can bet that come Labor Day the dome will be put on right away while most of September is hot! I don’t know where the solution lies. Are the Board of Directors and in Richmond aware of this problem? Let me add that the “Y” staff are both considerate and courteous. The programs for families are excellent. Laurie Francis of Powhatan is a FLAG volunteer and when she makes the trip to Goochland, her 18year-old daughter Mary usually accompanies her. “About six months ago I retired from my job and decided that I had all this time available and wanted to do something that made me feel good and I love the dogs and I love being around dogs,” Francis said. “I have three rescues myself so that’s how I got involved….It’s very rewarding to see their tails wagging the minute you pull up in the driveway and it’s very sad to go out of the driveway and leave ‘em here overnight.” It upsets Pearsall that there are people who think nothing of leaving a dog to fend for itself. “There’s no excuse for a person to leave the dog and in these last couple of years, people that have been foreclosed, they’ve left them

in homes with no food and closed the house up and just left them in there,” she said. “Everybody should appreciate the people that do rescue. They really should because they don’t understand the connection you have, that you can’t save them all and the ones you’re getting, you’re working to give them a better life and like I say, people just think nothing of leaving [them].” The good news, Pearsall said, is that people from around the country can adopt dogs from FLAG after viewing them on their website – www.flagpets.com. A woman from Colorado saw a dog she liked, Pearsall said, and traveled to

Richmond to adopt it. “She flew here,” Pearsall said. “She bought a seat for the dog. We met her at the airport with the dog. She got back in the plane and flew back.” The key to getting the dog you want is not to hesitate, Pearsall said. “You’ve got to act,” she said. “If there’s a certain kind you want, you need to act because if we get several calls, it’s not the first call particularly. The news was devastating. “As Bo was trying to absorb this and before he had a chance to call me, the nurse returned to him with amazing news. “Unbelievably, a call had just come in from Life Net that lungs were being offered for Bruce from North Carolina.’” Mary Taliaferro said. Fate had intervened in the most kindly of fashions and it was now a sprint to inspect, approve and transplant the organs into Bruce’s body, a process the patient attributes to a higher power. “I’m 100 percent convinced that the availability of healthy donor lungs becoming available at the last minute was a Godgiven miracle and not a matter of luck,” Bruce said. “It was so miraculous that I can see our daughter Caroline, who passed away seven and a half years ago, going to Jesus and arguing it was not my time,” he added. He also knows the important role the medical professionals played in his outcome. “There is no doubt that the combination of dedicated staff at both West Creek in Goochland and UVa Hospital in Charlottesville are responsible for saving my life,” Bruce said. Mary-Taliaferro said the nurses on duty at West Creek, Tony and Becky, went above and beyond the call of duty to assist. By 11 p.m. on a day that hadn’t started well for the Keeneys, Mary-Taliaferro got to spend a brief moment with her husband, still recovering from the successful lung transplant surgery. “Seeing Bruce at 11 p.m, was the sweetest feeling. Just knowing that he did survive, had new lungs and a chance at life was an amazing feeling,” Mary Taliaferro said. It was a long day, but, sup-

ported by friends and family, the Keeneys had survived 24 hours on an emotional roller coaster ride that ended with the gift of life. “All through the day, our emotions were all over the place. Could we get Bruce to UVa, would he be too sick, would the donor lungs be acceptable, would he die before the lungs arrived at UVa, would he die in the OR because he was so weak to hang on just a few more hours,” Mary-Taliaferro said. But now, almost 10 weeks later, Bruce displays a contagious smile as he recuperates and rehabs regularly. “Though I know and appreciate recuperation will be long and hard with some setbacks expected, and especially considering how sick I was when the double lung transplant took place, I feel fantastic!” he said last week. Since the surgery, Bruce has a renewed faith, and is ever grateful for the support of his family and friends “Recognizing I was blessed with a miracle, I have a renewed faith in the power of prayer and the importance of love and support from family and friends,” he said. A day doesn’t pass that the couple doesn’t think of the donor who gave Bruce the gift of life, and it’s still difficult to adequately thank the generosity of a grieving family who renewed life when one closest to them had ended. “We will be eternally grateful to the donor and their family for this gift,” Mary-Taliaferro said. “On the worst day of their lives, they were gracious and caring enough to give the gift of life so others may live.” Bruce is driving on a limited basis and anxious to get back to work. He’s also looking forward to a fall ritual for his family, all of them University of Richmond graduates and Spider football devotees. “While I fully expect and hope to return full time to

vival of all of this,” Bruce said. “It has brought us closer together.” Mary-Taliaferro is looking forward to the couple spending time with their granddaughter, Virginia, and just seeing Bruce and the 2 1/2 year old together provides a certain peace for her. “When I see them together, I think this is the exact reason why I wanted him to live. I wanted him to be a part of her life and of course, all of our lives,” she said. “As I have said before, with the death of Caroline, I know how fragile life can be. Bruce’s situation just reinforced that point. I realize that you have to be thankful for today and tomorrow will take care of itself.”

Slow start sinks Bulldogs in Region B opener By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

On Monday evening the Goochland varsity baseball team ended its season in a 4-3 loss to visiting Dan River. A slow start in the Region B Tournament opener stymied the Bulldogs early both offensively and defensively. The Wildcats took advantage by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning off Goochland starter Joe Cutchins. “Throughout the year, Joe has struggled in the first inning, but then he settles in,” said Bulldog coach Wes Farkas. “But they came out swinging and got a couple of hits early.” On offense, Wildcat starter Dallas Smithers kept Bulldog batters off balance for the first four innings. “Their pitcher did a good job of locating the ball well and got ahead of the batters, and that kept us guessing,” Farkas said. “That’s what you want from a pitcher,” Dan River’s Wesley Thornton was solid at the plate. He led off the game with a single and eventually scored on

Jamison Layne moved home on a wild pitch and Dan River looked to be cruising to a first round victory with a 4-0 lead. But the Bulldogs weren’t

finished. Goochland mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning when Cutchins scored on a Cole Starke sacrifice fly. Starke also took over on the

mound for the Bulldogs and kept the Wildcats at bay while the Goochland offense recorded one run innings in the fifth and sixth innings. But the Bulldogs could get no closer than 4-3 after Thornton came on as the Wildcat and recorded the final six outs of the game. Wildcat coach Sammy McCormick felt his team was fortunate to get the victory against a stubborn Goochland team. “We felt lucky to walk out of here with a win tonight,” he said. “They were a hit away late in the game. It could have been a whole different ballgame.” Farkas was proud of his team’s effort and the no quit attitude they displayed in the loss. “The guys never gave up tonight. We were down most of the game but they kept chipping away,” Farkas said. “Our guys didn’t lay down and we have some young guys in key positions. The future looks good, but we’ll miss these seniors.” Seniors Jake King, Cole Starke, Mason Carneal, Forest Witt, Trace Nixon and Josh

Driver played their final game in a Bulldog uniform. For Driver, it was a bittersweet end to a season cut short by injuries. Returning from a shoulder injury, Driver held down the fort at first, but his absence on the mound was clearly missed the last eight games. “He’s our number one workhorse,” Farkas said. “He’s been out for eight or nine games and that really did hurt us. Josh was our go to guy, so it did affect our mind set.” McCormick and the Wildcats will face William Monroe on Wednesday. It wasn’t exactly pretty but the Goochland varsity softball team got the end result they were looking for in their Region B opener on Monday evening. The Bulldogs overcame two errors with solid offense to shut out visitng Appomattox 5-0. With the win, Goochland (19-3) advances to its third straight regional semifinals yet they are looking for their first win in that stretch. Last

season the Bulldogs saw their season end in a 7-2 home loss to Stuarts Draft. Coach Amy Henneberger was uncertain whether her players were thinking of that game or just dealing with tournament opening jitters, but it was clear they did not display their usual sharpness against the Raiders (11-12). “Defensively we made way too many errors,” Henneberger said. While sophomore pitcher Jackie Tremain produced her usually powerful fastball (7

Goochland forward Sydney Alvis had plenty of scoring opportunities, but for the first 86 minutes of the Bulldogs’ VHSL Region B girls’ soccer quarterfinal against visiting Nelson County, she couldn’t quite put the ball inside the net. However, in the 87th minute, she found an opening and scored to lead Goochland to a 2-1 double overtime victory Monday night. The Bulldogs will next travel to Stuarts Draft (a 2-1 winner over Clarke County) in the Region B semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the region final as well as clinch a berth in the VHSL Group A state tournament next week. We need to work on bunting and moving the runner around when we get on base.” The Raider bats came to life with two out in the top of the third to produce five hits over the final five innings but Goochland managed to snuff out every threat, despite multiple errors. “We all played together, stuck together, talked each other through it, made

sure no one was getting down on themselves,” Plummer said. The Bulldogs will host James River District rival Bluestone on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a chance to exorcise the demons of the past two years. In midApril the Bulldogs handed the Barons a 9-1 home loss but found the going much more difficult in Goochland, escaping with a 4-3 win. But the coach and players know what’s at stake in the third meeting between the two teams. “We win one more we go to states,” Henneberger said. “That’s our goal to take it one game at a time. We win Wednesday we move on.”

“They had so many girls on defense,” Alvis said. “It was just hard to get through and playing a through ball is what we’re used to doing. We had to adjust and connect passes and work our way down the field.” Both teams fought to a draw in the first half. Liddle scored the first goal in the 33rd minute off of a shot deflected by Gumm in front of the Nelson County net. The Governors (10-4) tied it four minutes later on a long, high penalty kick by Nadya Greenleaf into the upper right corner of the Bulldogs’ net. While the Governors kept up with Goochland in the first half, it seemed the Bulldogs advantage in terms of shot opportunities increased as the second half wore on.Goochland outshot the Governors 15-2 in the second half. “I think we couldn’t quite connect our passes with each other – holding the ball a little too long, weren’t able to play our game,” said Nelson County coach Janean Rodkey. “I think that they were really able to put

together some passes and make some connections to move the ball downfield.” Despite the scoreless second half, the Bulldogs were optimistic about their chances in overtime. “Honestly, I knew we were going to have it,” Alvis said. “We were more energetic than they were. They were yelling at each other and we were just kind of working our way down the field – and we had a lot more shots than they did.” The first five-minute overtime was likewise scoreless, but the Bulldogs were more relentless in the attack. They kept up the pressure until Alvis found herself with the ball on the left side of the field. Her memory of what happened was rather vague. “It was just there and I kicked it,” Alvis said.
