Christie Holcomb-Guimond, left, attended Friday’s Goochland Relay for Life in part to honor her mother, Dotty Holcomb, who lost her battle with cancer in February. She said her mother was incredibly passionate about Relay for Life, and is remembered by many long-time participants for presiding over the cake walk. “Everyone lost a lot when she passed,” Holcomb’s best friend, Karen Bradshaw, said. “She was just an amazing woman.” The 2013 event was held in the gym at Goochland High School due to rainy weather. Top right, Michael Matts, 2, one of the youngest participants, spent a little time exploring the long line of luminary bags placed in a ring around the gymnasium. Each bag was purchased in honor of a person who has battled cancer. Right, A “cake” in the middle of the gym helped mark the 100th birthday of the American Cancer Society.
According to at least one Goochland County resident, the plan to move Benedictine High School from its current Sheppard Street location to a site on River Road is not a done deal. “They would like you to think that it’s a done deal, but it isn’t,” said Dave Pendergrast, a resident who lives across the proposed campus at The Abbey on River Road. Pendergrast delivered his message last Tuesday during a public comment period of a regularly scheduled meeting of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors. “Benedictine has been using the news media to create the false impression that the move can proceed immediately,” Pendergrast said. “We can

expect Benedictine to portray the county as the heavy now for preventing the move that Benedictine planned.” Pendergrast is one of a group of neighbors who vehemently oppose the proposed move. “Benedictine has created its own problems by rushing ahead without complying with the law,” Pendergrast said. Pendergrast’s complaints were bolstered by a stop work order issued by the county the day before, preventing the school from moving office equipment into an uncompleted interior at The Abbey. Benedictine headmaster Jessie Grapes described the latest hitch as a “misunderstanding” and said the matter should be resolved quickly. Construction work on the see Board >page 3

DMV 2 Go marks two-year anniversary in Goochland By Roslyn Ryan Contributing Writer
When Charter Robinson needed to renew his driver’s license last week, he didn’t do it online or even at the local DMV Select office located in the county administration building. Instead, he did what so many other Goochland residents have been doing for the last two years: He took the bus. The “bus” in this case is the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ DMV 2 Go, a full-service handicapped-accessible mobile unit offering residents a full range of DMV services — from issuing ID (identification) cards to administering road tests — not currently available in the county. On Thursday, June 6, DMV 2 Go celebrated its two-year anniversary in Goochland with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the parking lot behind the county administration building. Among local and state officials attending the ceremony were DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb, Del. Peter Farrell (R-Henrico) and Goochland County supervisors Susan Lascolette and Ned Creasey. “It’d been a wonderful two years,” said Holcomb, pointing out that the mobile unit had processed nearly a dozen transactions in the

first hour it was open on Thursday. According to Cumberland Commissioner of the Revenue Jean Bryant, both the DMV Select office and the DMV 2 Go have already proven a big hit with residents. “Not a day goes by,” Bryant said, “that someone doesn’t say ‘Thank God you’re here.’” DMV 2 Go has been providing bi-monthly service at the Goochland county administration building since March 2011. The mobile office is scheduled to return to Goochland on Aug. 5. For more information on DMV 2 Go, visit www.dmvNOW.com/DMV2GO.

continued from >page 1 exterior at The Abbey continues. That began last week’s supervisors’ meeting, a marathon edition that outlasted most of the public who attended and ended late in the evening. The bulk of the time in the evening session was consumed considering an application by Goochland residents Tamra and Doug Adams, owners of Goochland’s International School located at the intersection of Route 250 and Fairgrounds Road. The Adams’ sought a conditional use permit that would allow them to hold weddings and charity events on their 130-acre property. The tract, currently the home of a Montessori School that hosts 40 students, contains a large restored barn where weddings and other events have been held in the past. “We’ve been doing this for some time without knowing we were not in compliance, Tamra Adams told supervisors. She said the new venture anticipates about one wedding per weekend on the site. She also said that the weekend activities are more of a necessity than a profit-making venture, and revenue from the events will support operation of the school. The mother of 12 said she doesn’t take a salary for any of her work. “We’re more of a nonprofit for profit, she laughed. The supervisors were receptive to Adams’ plan, but did note some differences in restrictions placed on a recent application at Dover Hall and the ones proposed for the Adams property. Chairman Ken Peterson pointed to the difference in size of the properties and the roads
that service them. The Adams tract is more than twice as large as Dover Hall and is not surrounded by residential areas. District 1 representative Susan Lascolette said she was still concerned about a perceived difference in standards. For example, uniformed security is required for events at Dover and was not in the initial proposal for the Adams property. The applicant said she had no problem providing security when events featured more than 150 attendees and alcohol was being served. The supervisors added that restriction to their final approval. That approval passed by a 4-0 vote with District 3 supervisor Ned Creasy abstaining, citing a rushed and confused hearing for his vote. In other matters, the supervisors recognized Goochland’s five nominated teachers of the year and the eventual winner, Erin Yearout-Patton, a government/social studies teacher at Goochland High School. The other teachers chosen at their respective schools were Henry Jones of Goochland Middle School, Megan Donovan of Byrd Elementary School, Krystle Demas of Photo by Jim Ridolphi Goochland Elementary School Chairman Ken Peterson congratulates Erin Yearout-Patton, a and Gretchen Curreri of government/social studies teacher at Goochland High School, Randolph Elementary School. who was named Goochland Teacher of the Year.

Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the events being offered this month at Byrd Cellars at 5847 River Road West in Goochland. If you’re unfamiliar with Byrd Cellars, the winery has made its mark in the local area with its vast assortment of more than 15 different wines. Co-owner Bruce Murray has been a winemaker since 2001, and he said that Byrd Cellars has been growing its own grapes locally for the last nine years. And, speaking of grapes, the fruits used in its wines are grown at the nearby Celebration Vineyards and Rassawek Vineyards that are each less than three miles from Byrd Cellars.
Rassawek Vineyards recently provided a vibrant backdrop for the Rassawek Spring Jubilee that the Goochland Chamber of Commerce hosted there in May. Along with its selection of reds and whites that Murray said includes two chardonnays
and a couple of red blends, the Byrd Cellars business also sells three different apple wines. But wine lovers might not know that the beverages created there are just as eco-friendly as they are flavorsome. A large part of the business’ property is located in
conserved forest land, and much of the fertilization is performed organically. Murray said that byproducts created from production of the juice are then recomposted and returned to the vineyards. see Byrd >page 5

Forcing will play an assortment of popular tunes starting at 1 p.m. Murray said the tasting room at Byrd Cellars is a welcoming place for adults to spend weekends with glasses of wine and a pleasant atmosphere. “It’s a beautiful location with two back porches with a timber frame, he said. Deep Run Horse Show June 19-23
Personal fine print: real truth Horses and riders, many or make that a double from the area, to compete By Jim Ridolphi When The Tobacco Company opened its doors in 1976, the art of tending bar was a foreign skill in Richmond. Liquor by the drink had only recently been passed, and few establishments had begun serving drinks. I guess you had to be there to understand how those first months really were: The linesdeep people at the bar screaming for drinks that had to be looked up in bartender’s manuals. It was non-stop chaos from opening to close, and no one in Richmond had experienced this type of bar volume. I began as a lowly barback, learning a drink a day while hauling tons of ice for a bar that constantly ran out of everything. While it wasn’t the first establishment in Shockhoe Bottom, Jerry Cable’s showplace changed the profile and paved the way for the bustling zone it is today. In my years tending bar on the first floor of TCR, I also learned that many claim the talent, but only a few can deliver on the promise. Years later, I was in a position to hire bartenders for a busy chain restaurant. I made my share of mistakes when it came to judging resumes and their accuracy. I
in more than 200 classes
soon learned stories of summer bartending jobs at some resort usually amounted to no experience at all. On more than one occasion, I hired servers who couldn’t make a Bloody Mary once they actually got behind the bar. Finally, I solved the problem. Every applicant was given a simple 10-drink recipe test with recipes that would be well known to anyone who had legitimately tended bar. The list contained then customer favorites like Singapore Slings, Margaritas, White Russians, Manhattans, etc. Nine of 10 applicants who applied for bartender positions, all of them touting years of experience, usually failed the test. Many didn’t get one right. But it made my job easier, and gave me confidence in the resumes I did believe. I can’t remember a single hire who passed the test and then failed behind the bar. Which brings me to the point of this elongated thought process — the importance of resumes and their accuracy. That point got plenty of public air recently when Richmond School Board member Shonda see Fine Print > page 7

In fairness, it could happen to anyone, right? But, you might think a government entity might check a little closer. You’d also think an elected government official would be more prudent with the facts on her resume. Maybe I could suggest a form of my drink recipe test to make sure everyone who applies is qualified. By the way, I don’t have a doctorate in mixology but still can make a mean Margarita.

Candidate Terry McAuliffe visits Central Virginia with the persistence of Gov. Bob McDonnell, McAuliffe frequently used the words “stuck in traffic” in pointing out the gridlock in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. He and his wife Dorothy have made their home in Northern Virginia for about 25 years. He said “It’s a grind for Dorothy to go see a ballgame,” when one of their children is playing. McAuliffe said traffic delays have impacted goods being transported to Dulles Airport for delivery. “It’s gridlock. Morale is at an all-time low because the folks can’t move around,” he continued. He said transportation needs to be improved “the whole way out to the breadbasket of America. We need to add some lanes on [Interstate] 64 because it’s absolute gridlock. We’ve got to do work on

The gubernatorial candidate also commended “all Democrats and Republicans who voted for it,” referring to McDonnell’s plan. He then turned his attention to education. “I view education not as an expense; I view education as an investment.” Citing pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, McAuliffe said, “We’ve got to invest early, get those minds thinking early. We’ve got issues with our teachers. We’re losing some of our great teachers.” Salaries top his education agenda as he talked about the need to keep teachers here. “I want to pay teachers the national average.” McAuliffe also wants a total reform of the Standards of Learning (SOLs). He said progress should be gauged early in the school year, with testing possibly including

As Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate continues on the campaign trail toward the Nov. 5 General Election, he talked as a parent last week during a visit to Central Virginia. “I worry about where my five children are going to live,” he said about being “out fighting for what you care about: jobs and economic development.” He described the race as “the starkest contrast between two candidates running for governor.” McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman, and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate, are considered to be in a dead heat for the commonwealth’s top office.
“No one will fight harder for you when I’m governor,” he said on Wednesday, June 5, to a crowd in the Barksdale Theatre at the Hanover Tavern. A resident of Northern Virginia, McAuliffe said he was “excited, but we have some huge challenges.” In addressing the ongoing financial battles between the political parties in the U.S. Congress, he said continued cuts will significantly impact businesses. “We need a governor who’s going to focus on how to grow and focus on security.” Innovative projects – “all those things people are talking about for the 21st century – we’ve got to bring those here to Virginia,” McAuliffe added. With transportation having been a major issue during the recent session of the Virginia General Assembly

I will not sign unless the Medicaid expansion is included.” He also is determined to keep women’s health centers open. With cancer screenings and affordable birth control being provided at these centers, he said the doors being open is an incentive to lure businesses here. Closures, like the recent padlocking of a Norfolk clinic, McAuliffe said, “is not a welcoming message to women in the workforce.” “We’ve got to be open and welcoming and we’ve got to stop this attack on women.” He also said attacks from the governor and the lieutenant governor on the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community have got to stop. McAuliffe said the governor’s role is about “jobs and economic activity. It’s not my job to tell you your personal life. Government should stay out of personal lives.” “My opponent said he got in [the campaign] to make abortions disappear in America,” he added. “I want a big turnout on Nov. 5. I want to make sure we win some House of Delegates seats,” he said. “I’m all in, folks. We’ve opened up 35 field offices. We’re doing this early. We learned from the Obama campaign to sign those cards. We’ve got to let folks know the difference in this election.” The Blue Moon Bash, which also featured Sen. Mark Herring, D-33, a candidate for Attorney General, was hosted by the Hanover Democratic Committee.

Supervisors approve new development standards for Centerville By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
Revised development standards for new construction along the Route 250 overlay district in Centerville took the final step in a detailed process last week as the Goochland County Board of Supervisors approved the amendments by a 5-0 vote. The approval follows two airings before the county’s planning commission and three community meetings, and the final edition featured changes suggested by stakeholders, the public and commission members. Originally envisioned as a plan that required residential style construction in the overlay zone, the approved plan suggests designs that contain features used in the Courthouse and Centerville villages. That could include pitched roofs, limited heights, porches or columns. “We had originally put in residential character as something that we wanted to see as a theme in the village,” environmental planner Leigh Dunn said. “Instead, we changed that to wanting to incorporate traditional features of the villages of Centerville and Courthouse.” Dunn said the final product has been aired and reflects amendments suggested through the process. “It was initially referred in March by the board to the Planning Commission and it’s been to the Planning see Centerville >page 14

Gordon calls retirement decision ‘bittersweet’ By Ken Odor Special Correspondent
Dianna Gordon had a hard time reading when she was a young girl at Cardwell Elementary School. “I am very much dyslexic,” she said last Thursday as she took a few minutes to talk about her long career in education. That career will come to a close June 30 after her retirement was announced at Tuesday’s School Board workshop meeting. “I had a dream to teach someone else so it would be easier for them than it was for me,” she recalled. Currently the Director of Elementary Instruction and Title 1, Gordon began her career as a third grade teacher at Randolph Elementary School in 1973 after graduating with an education degree from VCU. She grew up in Goochland after her father moved
the family here from Bath County where she was born. She graduated from Goochland High School in 1968, where she met her husband Bryan Gordon, now the Athletics and Activities Director for Goochland High School. “He was the football player and I was the cheerleader,” she laughed. Both the couple’s sons also teach math in the county system, Patrick at Goochland Middle School and Preston at Goochland High School. After her start at Randolph, Gordon also taught at the former Kanawha Elementary School and Goochland Elementary School, where she was the reading specialist. She then moved into administration in Fluvanna County, serving as assistant principal and principal at Central Palmyra and Columbia Elementary Schools. It was in Fluvanna where Gordon said she made one of her most
rewarding achievements, opening a year-round school at Central in 2003. “It was truly one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have done in my career,” said Gordon. “Probably one of the neatest things I ever did.” She returned to Goochland in 2004 to become principal at Goochland Elementary for seven years and later served two years as principal at Randolph, before taking her current position last year. Of her decision to retire, Gordon said, “You just get to a point in your life when you know. I told Dr. Lane that it was bittersweet.” “Mrs. Gordon has touched innumerable lives throughout her extraordinary career in education,” said Goochland Superintendent of Schools James Lane. “Though she will be missed terribly, I wish her the most rich and rewarding suc-

Wouldn’t we want everything underground there?” Creasey said. Dunn said cost was a major factor in the decision to encourage and not require underground utilities. “It’s another burden we’re placing on them to spend that Noelle Ware, money,” said District 1 supervisor Susan Lascolette. ground utilities had not come up in any of the three community meetings or the two Planning Commission airings. “Is that because it’s encouraged rather than required?” board chairman Ken Peterson asked. “I think there would be some concern from the stakeholders if we changed it,” Dunn said. Peterson suggested changing the language after the community meetings would not allow the public in general, and business community in particular, a fair chance to air their concerns. “We haven’t vetted it so I’m just wondering if it would be wise to take a look at it before we make it shall,” vice chair Manuel Alvarez said. In its first airing at the Planning Commission, the plan faced stiff opposition

from the development community, and many of the original recommendations were amended in the final approved version. The plan addresses parking regulations within the streetscape area, building materials, screening of HVAC units and other development issues. Board members expressed a concern that all involved parties in the affected areas had been given ample opportunity to voice their concerns. Dunn said the plan was tweaked in response to both Planning Commission and community-expressed concerns, and the final document reflected a comprehensive, collaborative effort. “So, we’ve addressed every concern of every property owner that you are aware of,” Lascolette said. “We’ve certainly tried a
yeoman’s job to get everybody involved. That’s for sure,” county administrator Rebecca Dickson said. Creasey said he hoped the new policy allowed for “common sense” decisions. The new standards apply to new construction and exterior modifications to existing buildings. The regulations do not apply to maintenance related activities. The supervisors also voted to reduce the Design Review Committee to three sitting members and two alternates. Currently, any application in an overlay district goes directly to the Design Review Committee. Decisions on those applications can now be made administratively. “This is another improvement in the process for applicants and uses design review in a more judicious manner,” Dickson said.

Goochland falls to Floyd in softball title game By Mike Barber Richmond Times-Dispatch
RADFORD — Ericka Spencer’s seventh-inning flare to right field landed 6 inches foul and Goochland High School softball’s best season in 35 years ended one win shy of a championship. Less than 12 hours after advancing to their first state title game since 1978, the Bulldogs couldn’t get past Floyd County, falling 4-1 in the Group A Division 2 final at Radford University on Sunday morning. “We’re not a team that just gives up,” sophomore pitcher Jackie Tremain said. “I knew something was going to happen. If we just started it a little sooner.” Trailing 4-0 going into the final inning, Goochland (22-5), the Region B runner up, scored a run, then loaded the bases for Spencer. She slapped a 2-0 pitch from Floyd junior pitcher Christene Phillips down the right-field line, but the ball curved and landed foul. “I was very nervous,” Phillips said of watching Spencer’s hit in the air. “After that, I just kind of took a deep breath and got my focus back together.” With a full count, Phillips got Spencer to ground out to second to end the game and

four runs on seven hits Sunday. She struck out five. “I think they’re a good hitting team,” Goochland coach Amy Henneberger said. Phillips was dominant in the circle for Floyd County, holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first six innings.
“She was on today,” Floyd coach Scott Thompson said. “We have two great pitchers and we usually let one of them go til they run out of gas. And she didn’t run out of gas today.” After a scoreless first inning, Floyd County’s Dani

Goochland put together a two-out rally in the fourth, but courtesy runner Sydney Pratt was thrown out at third trying to advance on Carly Plummer’s single to right. Aimee Royal broke the game open for Floyd in the bottom of the fifth, driving a two-run triple into right-center to put the Buffaloes up 4-0. Before the bottom of the seventh, Floyd assistant coach Wayne Mills gathered the team in front of the dugout and told them, “I smell victory.” But the Bulldogs had some fight left in them, getting a leadoff double from Brandy Tester and a single by Tremain. Goochland scored its first run on Plummer’s fielder’s choice. Taylor Scruggs followed with a single. After an out, Jones’ infield single loaded the bases for Spencer, setting up her near miss that ended a memorable season for the Bulldogs, who lose three seniors from this year’s team. “It was very special,” Henneberger said. “Hopefully, the other kids will want to take it a step farther and build on this.”
Harris led off the second with a triple down the right-field line that Goochland’s right fielder couldn’t cut off. Riley Underwood followed with a flare into short center that fell in for an RBI single, putting the Buffaloes up 1-0. Farewell, and thank you for all the memories By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com
CHARLIE LEFFLER
Cleaning out my desk the other day, I came across an ancient sticky-note scribbled with a pair of cell phone numbers. One of the names on that note was that of a young unknown wide receiver named Deion Branch. The note dated long before Branch helped the New
England Patriots win a pair of Lombardi trophies and turn in a 2005 Super Bowl MVP performance. Therefore that note made me reflect on my past in sports. Branch is just one of many young athletes I’ve had the privilege to watch go from virtual obscurity to national recognition. I can recall a Conference USA media day where I sat alone at table interviewing
young unknown guard named Dwayne Wade. Watching this year’s NBA playoffs, I realized half of New York Knicks roster were players I covered during their college careers. There was also a massive bruising quarterback by the name of Ben Roethlisberger who I saw rumble his way into the national consciousness in the 2003 GMAC Bowl. On the opposite side of the ball was a young
linebacker who saw little playing time by the name of Elvis Dumervil. I’ve seen so many athletes who followed similar paths over the years. That being said, I’ll admit I was somewhat spoiled when I moved to Virginia in 2005. Prior to that time, my work in sports media consisted solely in coverage of major Division I athletics. Naturally you know
everything when you cover the best? Correct? The Richmond area proved just how wrong I was and how truly privileged I have since become. When I was first hired as a freelance reporter/photographer for Richmond Suburban Newspapers, then-sports editor Brian French assigned me see Farewell >page 17

CENTRAL GARAGE – Solid defense behind reliable performances by sophomore pitcher Jackie Tremain have been hallmarks of the Goochland softball team’s most successful season in school history. The two factors coupled with two triples and two runs by senior shortstop Chakiryn Jackson are why the Bulldogs (21-4) have advanced to the Group A, Division 2 softball tournament semifinals for the first time. The Bulldogs, Region B runners-up, traveled to Region A champion King William Tuesday afternoon for a quarterfinal matchup and came away with a 2-1 victory that propelled them into the state semifinals Saturday at Radford, where they defeated James River 3-1. Goochland fell 4-1 to Floyd County in the state championship game Sunday. King William (21-2) was bidding to return to the state semifinals where the Cavaliers’ season ended a year ago. Goochland, which didn’t make an error in its Region B semifinal against Bluestone, struggled in the field (five
Farewell continued from >page 16 to cover a Monacan baseball team that was backing its way into postseason play. Over the next few weeks I followed the Chiefs on their incredible run to the VHSL AAA state championship, which started a remarkable streak for me as a reporter. Though providing coverage of relatively few schools in the Richmond area, I have since covered at least one local team that played in a state

errors) in the region championship loss to Dan River. The Bulldogs were resolute about returning to form in the field against the Cavaliers. “We got ourselves together. We really worked on flushing our minds, forgetting about it, learning what we did wrong and just going in there with a clear mind,” Tremain said.
Tremain, a lefthander, scattered six hits, struck out three and walked two. She gave up King William’s run in the fourth when opposing pitcher Kayla Huffman (nine strikeouts, three walks, three hits allowed) laced a triple to drive in Lauren Jenkins who had walked. “I felt like I hit all my zones,
but it was really my defense behind me that helped tremendously,” Tremain said. “It helps as a pitcher to know you have a good defense behind you because you can mistakes, and they will be there to back you up.” Third baseman Jordan Fleming, one of three Goochland seniors, had five
championship game every year since. From Monacan to James River to Hanover baseball, Goochland boys’ and girls’ soccer to Atlee indoor and outdoor track; Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry softball coming full circle back to Hanover baseball and Goochland softball this season; it has been an incredible run. And how can I leave out the repeated state semifinal runs of the Hanover football team, Randolph-Macon men’s basketball advancing to the NCAA D-III Final Four, Atlee girls’ volleyball vying for a state
championship, last season’s historic run by the American Legion Post 175 baseball team, Mechanicsville Little League reaching the World Series and Goochland’s back-to-back appearances in the Group A state football championship, culminating with the 2012 title. Coming to Virginia I thought I knew all there was to know about rivalries; Louisville vs. Kentucky is about as bitter as they come. Then I discovered R-MC vs. Hampden-Sydney; Atlee vs. Hanover vs. Lee-Davis vs. Atlee… lesson learned.
Now that has come to an end. As some may already know, I am stepping down from my position as sports editor for the Mechanicsville Local and Goochland Gazette to return to Kentucky. I am making the move for family but I feel like I am leaving a family behind. It is a move proving to be decidedly more difficult than I thought it would be six years ago when I stepped into this position. I have learned so much from the quality, determination and spirit of the local athletes it has been my privilege to cover.
putouts. Catcher Brandi Tester threw out pinch runner Kayla Issaac trying to steal, and first baseman Erika Spencer dove to her left to snare a hot grounder by KW third baseman Essence Jackson, the Region A player of the year. Right fielder Kaytlyn Jones finished off an unusual double play that kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard in the fifth inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Chakiryn Jackson grabbed a sinking liner off her shoe top for the second out. Her throw to second to double up Brittney Hunt skittered into right field where Jones picked it up and threw Hunt out at third. The Bulldogs thwarted another KW scoring opportunity in the sixth. “Our defense has been pretty strong throughout the year as a whole. We had a rocky day [against Dan River]. We knew that we had to have a strong defense to get it done because [King William} wasn’t going to make errors on their defense. We knew coming into the game that we had to be strong, and we executed,” Fleming said. Chakiryn Jackson opened the game with a triple to right center field and scored on
Tester’s high-chopped bouncer over the mound. Jackson, a senior, struck again with one out in fifth when her dying line drive scooted under the glove of diving King William right fielder Erin Anderson. Fleming knocked in Jackson on a groundout to third. “It’s so exciting. We’ve never been this far. I’m a senior. We had to bring clothes in case we lost so we don’t have to change now,” Jackson said. “I’m so happy. It feels so good.” King William coach Kay Gammon was disappointed with the result. They outplayed us. We prepared for them. It just wasn’t our time,” Gammon said. “They played their hearts out. Unfortunately, we couldn’t piece our hits together. It was the first time we saw a lefty. That could have had something to do with it. We threw a lefty for two days trying to get used to it.” The Cavaliers will be strong again next year. Huffman, a sophomore who has been the district and region pitcher of the year two years in row and was first-team All-Metro last year, returns as does Essence Jackson.
The hours have been long and the labor arduous but I regret not a single moment of it. I have watched young athletes rise up through the Little League ranks to become high school stars. I have seen high school athletes go on to make a lasting mark in college and college stars become professionals. The athletes did all the work; I just enjoyed the ride. There are so many people I need to thank for what they have given me through this experience. I cannot name them all. The coaches, the
players and their parents have made a lasting impression on my heart. I hope that in some ways I have left a lasting impression on the RSN readers as well. None of the athletes I have covered during my time in Virginia will hold any lower position of stature in my memories than those of Branch, Wade and others. The sticky note simply reminded me just how much things can change and how lucky I have been. I wish you well. — Charlie Leffler
