STEM Camp soars for a second year By Ken Odor Special Correspondent

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh! That sound delighted dozens of third, fourth and fifth graders at Goochland Middle School last Thursday as they launched their rockets from the parking lot behind the Goochland High School/Middle School complex as part of the second Goochland summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Camp. A line of youngsters waited patiently about 50 yards behind the “launching pad,” under the supervision of county teachers and volunteers as three students at a time watched their mis-

siles soar skyward. Teachers and volunteers helped each student prepare their rockets for launch on the firing line when their turn came. While most of the students seemed to agree that the rocket launching was the most exciting part of STEM Camp so far, they had learned other things as well during the weeklong event. For instance, according to Randolph Elementary School fifth grader Jane Norman, vegetables can generate electricity. “A potato can power a clock,” she declared, while waiting to launch her rocket. Tracy Marcus lives in Partridge Hill, about a third of a mile east of the entrance to The Abbey on River Road where Benedictine College Preparatory School plans to begin its fall school year on Sept. 3.

“My frustration is with all the negative press,” she said during a recent interview at her home. Her friend Nina Patton, who also lives near The Abbey, joined her and Marcus’s son Patrick, a rising sophomore at Benedictine, to talk about the upcoming move by the school. “I can’t understand who wouldn’t

want a school with a 100-year-plus reputation,” said Marcus. “It’s a gift.” Patrick, 14, said he’d rather the school stay at its Sheppard Street site in Richmond but now that the move has been decided and is underway he’s all for seeing it completed. Patton said she is not worried about the traffic issue, one of the concerns

Organ music might seem like sounds from a different era, but organist Charles Lindsey said he will breathe new life into the instrument when he performs at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 5, at the Grace Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall at 2955 River Road West in Goochland. Lindsey is the choirmaster and organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Bristol Parish, in Petersburg. He also has been the primary accompanist for Da Capo, a Central Virginia-based organization that provides musical instruction to children and teens, and accompanies voice majors for the School of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University. Friday evening, Lindsey will be joined onstage by rising Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Abbie Haynes. He said his mother Bettie inspired him to learn to play the organ. She has served as a musical director and organist at several Richmond churches. “When I was really young, I was with her a lot, and I would sit there and watch her practice,” Lindsey said. “I picked up stuff by ear, so she got me into piano.” Lindsey recorded a CD called “On a Slow Boat with Bach” in 2003. The independent release, which features music played on the E.M. Skinner and Allen Renaissance organ combo at St. Paul’s, encompasses a variety of musical genres. “I wanted to make a CD that appealed to people who aren’t fans of organ music,”

Lindsey said. “I did a jazz arrangement of ‘A Slow Boat to China,’ some show tune arrangements and some legitimate organ pieces.” St. Paul’s organ combo is special since it combines an acoustic instrument that has been at the church for many years with a digital sound. “Well, the E.M. Skinner is a really famous brand of organ in America and one of the most classic instruments,” Lindsey said. “Most of them were made in the early part of the 20th century, so they’re rare and precious.” “The Allen work was added in the early 2000s and made to sound like pipes. And, these days, the technology is so good that you can’t tell the difference.” Lindsey said he was asked to return to Grace Episcopal Church after he played at its organ dedication ceremony last December. During Friday’s concert, he will play a mix of pieces that range from classical to patriotic. Haynes will sing “God Bless America,” among other tunes. “She’s going to sing some

classical songs and some from Broadway, and I’ll do my own arrangements of a few things,” Lindsey said. “But, it will be a variety of songs.” Still, the question begs: Are there many organ music fans out there? Lindsey freely admits there might not be many, but he hopes that Friday evening’s performance will attract a few more admirers to the instrument. “I would say no,” Lindsey said. “It’s partly why I made the CD.” “Part of the idea is that I was trying to encourage people to see that organ music can be fun to listen to. People think it’s stodgy and outdated, but, with my CD, I wanted to show that the organ can play all styles of music.” Friday’s concert is a benefit for Grace Episcopal’s food pantry. Lindsey said admission is free, but attendees are asked to donate a canned food item or to make a monetary donation to the pantry. For more information, visit www.gracechurchgoochland.org.

Chamber shines spotlight on Go Go Frozen Yogurt Contributed Report

Go Go Frozen Yogurt was the scene on June 26 for a Business After Hours event presented by the Goochland Chamber of Commerce. The new business, owned by Wenky and Alex Chen, is located at 2730 Fairground Rd. in Goochland. It is located in the Food Lion shopping center. Business After Hours provided an opportunity for the Chamber of Commerce to introduce the owners and their business to its membership. Alex said he is launching ambitious expansion plans to capture health-conscious consumers by touting low-fat

Even kindergarten through second graders were involved, with a separate program for them of problem-solving building structures based on the Mother Goose story. Meanwhile, down at the Goochland Family YMCA swimming pool, more students, including third through fifth graders who attended last year’s first STEM Camp along with sixth through eighth graders, were launching underwater remotely operated vehicles into the water, vehicles they had built while divided into three teams. The SeaPerch vehicles incorporated three propellers on a tubular framework with ballast. The teams were free to place the components where they thought they would work best to allow the vehicles to move both on the surface and underwater. Sixth grader Madeleine Muniz, 12, and Fritz Kemmerly, 14, a ninth grader, said the vehicles were supposed to be able to move right and left and be able to both submerge and surface in response to the joystick controller. “I thought is was a lot of fun working with the robots and the wiring,” said Kemmerly. “We really had to think about how our construction was going to be,” explained Muniz for the device to work well. “We had to put our motors just right.” Although the kits came with a plan for how to build the SeaPerch, the students were free

to try their own ideas. “SeaPerch STEM Camp was a dynamically innovative experience that challenged students to design, construct, and test a remotely operated vehicle. Students were enthusiastic, active engineers who exemplified the enjoyment that can occur with science, technology, engineering, and math,” said Randolph Elementary teacher Shelliotte Lawson, who served as a SeaPerch facilitator. STEM Camp coordinator Adeeb Hamzey said more than 130 students took part in this year’s camp, a dramatic increase over last year. According to Hamzey, the Goochland Education Foundation received more than $6,700 in pledges with “more on the way,” he said. Eric Sundberg, owner of Southern Electronics and a sponsor of the STEM Camp, stopped by to watch the SeaPerch fun. “This is really needed in the elementary schools,” said Sundberg, who said it’s hard to find properly trained technicians in his field. “Monetary and other types of contributions came from Goochland residents and businesses, regional companies, and a New York-based company with local connections,” said Hamzey. After Thursday’s outdoor events, which finished up just as rain began to fall in Goochland, the students visited the Science Museum of Virginia and saw the IMAX show “Flight of the Butterflies.” When it was all over, some of the students wanted more. “Some of the children were sad the week was over,” said Hamzey, “and others wished the camp was on for another week.”

Benedictine continued from >page 1 Marcus, who has five other children in schools in the area, said she and her husband Chris, who coaches lacrosse at Benedictine, decided to send Patrick to Benedictine after attending an open house there last year and hearing Headmaster Jesse Grapes speak. “I was really sold after hearing him speak,” said Marcus. “He’s just really a man of character.” She said the location of the school was irrelevant to her at the time and still is. It was the type of education she wanted for her son that mattered. Marcus said Grapes made it clear that the boys would “earn everything they got during his presentation.” She said she liked that. She also said she was unclear how the process would end after reading about hearings and lawsuits. “Where is this going to stop?” she asked. “Is it political? At some juncture, enough is enough.” Marcus said she worries about what type of development might be proposed for The Abbey site if the school did not locate there. Another Partridge Hill resident, Louise Martin, raised the same issue, wondering if a subdivision might not be proposed for the property if Benedictine were thwarted in locating its school there.

Martin said she was concerned about money being spent on outside legal counsel to assist with the Goochland County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) hearings. “I’m outraged that my tax dollars are being squandered on the issue,” she said. Martin said she also wondered why the District 5 seat on the BZA board was still vacant. Patrick said he thought the school would probably have closed if Grapes had not become headmaster. Despite his preference for the downtown location with its tradition, he said the River Road site gives the school more room. “They’re making a lot of improvements out here — there’s more room for stuff,” he said. “I feel like I’ll get a better education out here than downtown.” The school was scheduled to begin moving furniture and equipment a couple of weeks ago in an agreement with the county. The BZA will hold at least one more hearing on Friday, July 12, to determine if the panel has jurisdiction to rule on the appeal of four plaintiffs challenging the school’s plan of development (POD), which has been approved by the county. Should they decide they have jurisdiction, the BZA has designated Aug. 26 as the hearing date to consider the merits of the plaintiff’s appeal.

said. “We have a lot of meetings with those families and develop programs and work with them as far as alternate education plans — if need be, things like that. It is more secondary level.” State law requires that students attend school until they’re 18, Mott said. “You can’t drop out,” she said. “So the principal would work with them as far as what credits are needed, what type of diploma they want, and then try to fast track them there.” If students in Virginia choose not to attend public schools, they can attend a private school or apply to be homeschooled, Mott said. If students who have served detention still refuse to attend school, they can be sent back for more detention, she added. According to Mott, truant students also can go back to the Family Assessment Planning and Treatment Team — FAPT — to help determine why they

choose not to attend school. FAPT teams are “a collaboration of county agencies, such as department of social services, the courts, the schools, private providers,” Mott said. In many cases, the parents are encouraging their child to come to school, but the child still resists, Mott said. “I have a lot of times where parents are trying all they can to get their child to come and sometimes it’s the child that doesn’t want to and sometimes it’s the parent who is up for work before the student is and they don’t even know that they’re not coming to school or things like that,” she added. Another option is the General Educational Development or GED program, Mott said. “We do have the GED program, so, again, it’s just working with the principals and if they feel that if the student and

the parent want to do the GED program, then they can go on that track,” she said. A modern-day truant officer, Mott said she takes great pains to locate the parents of truant students who are enrolled in GCPS in an effort to determine if they’re enrolled in another jurisdiction. “I try as hard as I can to find them — sending letters to their home hoping it gets forwarded, asking them to call me, asking them to tell me where they’ve enrolled the child,” she said. “If I know what county they’re going to, I’ll make sure that they get enrolled or let them know that that family’s moving in [and] to be on the lookout. So I do as much as I can to try to find them. “Once they enroll them in another school, the school will send a request for records and then we know where they have enrolled.”

U.S. means the world to refugee families By Roslyn Ryan, Contributing Columnist If you want to gain a whole new appreciation for life in the United States, a good way to start is by spending some time with someone who came here from somewhere very, very different. For a time, many years ago, I had the privilege of volunteering with a refugee resettlement organization in Richmond, working to help families get their bearings and navigate their first few months in the U.S. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of working with these families was seeing the wonder – and sometimes befuddlement — on their faces as they confronted each new facet of American life. It was hard sometimes not to chuckle (how do you explain to a family of Turkish refugees why taking a tourist-style photo in the Walmart meat department is funny?). But, as you might expect, their reasons for coming to the U.S. were typically nothing to laugh about. For many of these families, coming to America meant that they could finally live and raise their children in safety, free from political or religious persecution and away from the horrifying violence they had fled. “Does that noise bother you?” I asked a woman from Bosnia one day, noticing that the man in the

apartment next door had a habit of playing the television at an ear-splitting level. “Oh, no,” she said, shrugging her shoulders and smiling. At the time I thought she must just be a very easy-going person. It was only later, once her English had improved to the point where we could have real conversations, that I learned the truth: Compared to the gunfire and shelling she had dealt with prior to coming to the U.S., a loud television just wasn’t something worth worrying about. I think about the refugee families I met often, and, as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, I wonder how they must view their adopted homeland on the anniversary of its founding. America, after all, is a dizzying array of so many things to so many people, each of them embracing the country in their own way, for their own reasons. It is liberty, it is opportunity. It is a splendid supermarket meat section and a safe place to tuck your children into bed. And like the people still arriving here every day, we are a country still finding its way and striving, every single day, to achieve our true potential. Anyone with photographs or information about this property circa 1910 to 1950 (of the kitchen building in particular) my family would love to receive. “Little Genito,” also spelled “Jeni Toe” or “Jeneto” in old records, was a land grant to Charles Johnson patented Sept. 28, 1732. The grant consisted of 77 acres. He built his home on the site of the present kitchen. The second owner of 77 acres was Benjamin Watkins in 1734. The third owner was John Watkins in 1787. It was his daughter, the third offspring, Frankie (18011846) who married Joshua Royal Knibb (1800-1859) in 1821. Joshua became owner of 87.5 in 1823. At this time, the name “Little Genito” appears in the records. A deed of 87.5 acres appears in the name of Martha Crawford in

1850. She was John Watkins’ second child who married Byars Crawford. John Binford Knibb (1832-1906) and Frances Rebecca Henrietta Bowles (1834-1911), daughter of Jesse Bowles and Ann Edmondson Duley, became the property owner, date unknown. He was a chaplain, artillerist and blacksmith during the Civil War. From 1907 until 1962, Abner Clopton Knibb (1870-1962) was the owner. Then, in 1962, the property, which consisted of 80 acres, was sold

to Mrs. J. Louis Reynolds. The buildings were in decay. In 1985, John Fogg Twombly IV, an historian by degree and avocation, purchased the property from Glennie Reynolds Martin. John Twombly and his wife Joan and their twin sons live in the “big” house now. The Knibb family lived at “Little Genito” on 1130 Knibb Lane off the Shallow Well Road from 1823 to 1962. see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from >page 6 My father, James Harwood Cochrane, was the seventh child of Wilentina Dean Knibb (1879-1971) and John Minor Cochrane (18751930), son of Lucian Minor Cochrane and Elmira Jane Bowles. Dad was born Nov. 16, 1912, in the main house at â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Genito.â&#x20AC;? At a day and a half old, he and his mother moved back into the kitchen house in the yard with her husband and their other children. At this time, Abner Clopton Knibb, her brother, owned the property. The kitchen house was built on the site of the original home of Charles Johnson. When the main home of today was built by John Watkins in 1787. A freestanding kitchen was the site of the original Johnson house and continued to be the kitchen and dining room. My father at 100 years old is seeking any photographs or information about the kitchen house that he lived in as a child. The sons slept in a loft above the kitchen against the locally made stone chimney for warmth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mama Tinyâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tinyâ&#x20AC;? as my grandmother was called, was the 12th child of John Binford Knibb (18321906) and Frances Rebecca Henrietta Bowles (18341911). Behind the kitchen is a large depression in the ground with stones left from the ice house that was 18 feet deep. It was filled each winter with blocks of ice cut from a nearby feeder pond for the mill. Saw dust from the mill covered the ice. A roof over the ice pit also covered the family buggy. The stone wall around the cemetery was built of local stones by John Minor Cochrane in 1904. When Mrs. J. Louis

Reynolds bought the 80 acres, some buildings were in decline. She removed one half of the kitchen exposing the fireplace to the elements. John Twombly jacked up the remaining kitchen building to restore it with materials that he bought from a house in Cumberland County called Mount Ida Plantation circa 1790. He moved the door to the north side of the house and added a porch. These features remain today. Also, the living quarters/ dining room have steps without risers that go to a second story bedroom where my grandmother and grandfather slept. Abner Clopton Knibb (1870-1962) and Lucy Mary Wiltshire (1873-1947) lived in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;bigâ&#x20AC;? house built by John Watkins in 1787. His brother, Joshua Royal Knibb (1866-1962) built a cinderblock house in a field east of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Genito,â&#x20AC;? now 1125 Knibb Lane. When I was a child in the late 1930s, my grandmother, a widow, lived in a green and white clapboard house (circa 1890s) east of Joshuaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home at 1121 Knibb Lane. Later, in 1955, my father built a house at the corner of Knibb Lane at 1540 Shallow Well Road for his mother in her last years. Anyone with photographs or information about the Knibb family and particularly the free-standing kitchen building before 1950, please share with my family. Additionally needed are photos of the ice house whose cover protected the buggy. Any photos of buggies or early (1920-1940) modes of transportation taken at Little Genito also are needed. Thank you. ChiknEGG Productions is operating a new farmers market in Goochland Courthouse. Owner Lisa Dearden said My Courthouse Market opened on Wednesday, July 3, at 1800 Dickinson Road in Goochland. It is located on the grounds of the Goochland Family YMCA adjacent to U.S. 6 and U.S. 522 in the heart of the village of Goochland Courthouse. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through the end of October. Dearden said the market is dedicated to promoting a sustainable food system in Central Virginia, and to educating people about the connections between sustainable agriculture and the health of the region and its people. She also said the market favors farmers/growers/pro-

ducers who farm the land using sustainable agricultural practices or raise livestock using humane and sustainable practices. July 4, 2013 Ruth Attkisson ATTKISSON, Ruth Elizabeth Hawthorne, completed her life journey on June 22, 2013, at her home in Richmond following a brief illness. Her exemplary life spanned 97 years from her birth on January 18, 1916, in Goochland County. She was married for 66 years to Chastain Clifford â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cheenâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;CCâ&#x20AC;? Attkisson Sr., who preceded her in death in 2003. She is survived by two sons, C. Clifford Attkisson Jr. and his wife Carolyn of California and Aubrey Lee Attkisson of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Erik Clifford Attkisson and his wife Jill of Georgia, Claire Elizabeth Attkisson Bradshaw and her husband Jeff of Colorado, Michelle Lee Attkisson Freeman Clough of Florida, Martin Landon Attkisson Gilmore and his wife Jennifer of Texas, Brynn Attkisson Bates and her husband Rob and Justin Robert Attkisson, all of North Carolina; and by 11 great-grandchildren, including Wyatt Chastain and Cally Jacqueline Attkisson, Maya Rose and Lola Mae Bradshaw and Heaven Lee, Ashlei Diane and Taylor Elizabeth Clough, Bronwen Bates; and one greatgreat-grandchild, Hailey Rose Crossman. Ruth also is survived by esteemed nieces and nephews, Patrick Chastain Kelly, James Kelly and his wife Sharon, Edward H. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tedâ&#x20AC;? Hawthorne and his wife Alison, Faye Hawthorne Strong, Suzanne Askew Trio, Dois Rosser Jr. and his wife Shirley, Lillian Rosser Moore; and many grandnieces and nephews, and the children and grandchildren of each of them. In her latter years, Ruthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life was especially benefitted by the thoughtfulness and support of Patrick Kelly, Alison Hawthorne, Oscar W. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peteâ&#x20AC;? Attkisson, Jane Carol Geracimos and Aubrey Rosser Jr. Ruth was the youngest of 11 children of Lillian Tisdale and Aubrey Holland Hawthorne. Born in Goochland County, Ruth moved to Richmond for

high school, played tennis and golf, living the preponderance of her adult life in Richmond and Hampton. Ruth was a bank officer of the Bank of Virginia and its several successor banks, retiring after more than 25 years. She was a leader and esteemed Sunday School teacher of young women at Branchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Baptist Church, a member of Eastern Star, an avid reader and a life resource to countless family members and friends. She is honored and remembered for her wisdom, integrity and steadfast commitment to her family and to the nurturing of others toward productive and rewarding careers. She also was admired for her amazing memory and command of historical details. Her grandchildren knew that she loved a good joke, and made a terrific root beer float with yummy cookies on the side. Ruth and Cheen welcomed children into their home for brief and extended periods, providing each of them with a loving and secure foundation, leading to productive and often exemplary lives. Ruth lived independently at The Towers and was a member of its Red Hat Ladies and Bon Air Baptist Church. She loved art, music and dance. Her children and grandchildren are recipients of special afghans, needlepoint and embroidery that she created. An avid fan of the Washington Redskins and the Nationals, she invariably provided to any willing listener a critique of the teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; strengths and weaknesses and what the coaches should do next. Her family and friends, who were immensely benefitted by her life and encouraging words, will sorely miss Ruth. She always sought the core of an issue and never hesitated to communicate her views. She uniquely combined the roles of nurturer and leader. Ruth has made an anatomical gift of her body to benefit educational programs in the health sciences. Plans are pending for memorial services

Fronnie McCowin McCOWIN, Fronnie E., departed this life June 21, 2013, at the Henrico Doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Richmond. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Lee and Lorena McCowin; and two brothers, John Lee McCowin Jr. and Daniel E. McCowin. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving brother, Vaughn McCowin; an uncle, Frank Walker; special cousin, Audrey McCowin; a devoted sister-in-law, Felicia McCowin; six nephews, a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; and a special niece and caregiver, Melody McCowin. She also had many close friends in the community. Services were provided by the Robert Mealy Funeral Home in Goochland. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Home-course advantage pays off in junior golf title By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

Teen-aged golfers from all over Maryland and Virginia – and a couple from as far away as Pennsylvania and Georgia – came to Hermitage Country Club Thursday and Friday for a bit of a get-together: the Middle Atlantic Golf Association boys and girls junior championships. But the best most of the visitors in the boys’ competition could do was to enjoy the scenery and wildlife that visited the course, for a local golfer – Mills Godwin junior Mark Lawrence – led both days of the tournament and claimed the title with a 6-under-par score of 138. In the girls’ competition, Elizabeth Bose of Norfolk edged another Virginia girl, Kristin Hearp of Salem, by a stroke to win the girls’ title. Lawrence helped himself Thursday, taking the lead with a first-round score of 68. His closest competitor after the

first round was Lee Detmer of Washington, who was only one stroke back at 69. But Detmer struggled the second day while Lawrence’s familiarity with the course, coupled with his solid play, helped him pull away from those closest to him. Lawrence said familiarity with the course helped. “It definitely helped with the greens, because I know the greens real well,” Lawrence said. But he still had some problems. “My chipping wasn’t as good as I’d like it to be,” Lawrence said. “But I can learn from that and get it down for the next tournament.” Detmer found more to be unhappy with in himself. He shot a 77 Friday to slip into a three-way tie for second at 2-over-par 146 with Marcus Boyd of Dunwoody, Ga., and Brent Bubes of North Bethesda, Md. “I didn’t play very well,” Detmer said. “I didn’t start off

great and that kind of put me behind because Mark went off and started birdie-birdie. I was falling behind quick. … I didn’t hit it very well, didn’t get out of the box very well, missed a few putts – so not a great round overall.” Despite his complaints about his own play, Detmer didn’t think that a better round would have improved his chances of winning. “He played really well all tournament,” Detmer said of Lawrence. “I played with him both days, and he was hitting it well.” Detmer said the homecourse advantage helped Lawrence, but it was not enough for the victory. Bubes, who scored 71 Thursday and 75 Friday, agreed. “It’s not that big. You still have to play good golf,” Bubes said. “Sometimes it’s even tougher playing your home course.” Bubes was pretty pleased with his play, saying that a couple of bad holes cost him

sole possession of second place. Of the three second-place finishers, Boyd was most consisting, scoring a 73 each day. In terms of awards, he edged Bubes and Detmer in a scorecard playoff based on the best final round. Like the others, he found reason to complain about his play. “I wasn’t very pleased with

the way I was striking the ball today, but that’s golf,” Boyd said. “Ball-striking was absolutely terrible. I hit a lot of really embarrassing shots that really just threw me out of the tournament.” Other area golfers in the field of 32 for the boys’ tournament include Brenton Hayward of Manakin-Sabot who finished in a tie for 25th

at 172 and Hunter Wigginton who finished 32rd at 187. Bose led a field of only five girls. She trailed Hearp by two strokes, 72-74, after the first round. She said she tried not to think too much about the challenges of the course, instead focusing on “... trying to stay in the moment and just think about the free shot.”

Goochland native Mike Hicks took advantage of local knowledge to make waves in the Bassmaster Northern Open on the James River two weeks ago. But he wants to make even bigger waves downstream. Hicks, who used to be a regular on the Bassmaster Tour, made his second Bassmaster tournament appearance in eight years count by finishing second in the Bass Pro Shops Northern Open No 1. on the James River from June 13-15. Hicks’ total of 44 pounds,

10 ounces was second only to Bassmasster Elite Tour professional Randy Howell’s haul of 47 pounds, 10 ounces. They were among 170 professional anglers and 164 amateurs – “co-anglers” – competing for the top prize. The Bassmaster Elite tour is what Hicks refers to as the “major leagues” of the bass fishing world. Hicks used to fish regularly on the Basssmaster circuit from 1999-2005 – much of that on the Elite series’ predecessor, the Bassmaster Tour – but had appeared in only one other Bassmaster tournament since then: the Bass Pro Shops

Northern Open No. 1 on the James River in 2011. While Hicks is not sure he would like to compete on a regular basis now – he works in his family’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning business in Goochland – he definitely would like to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic. “The Classic is the world championship that they have every year,” Hicks said. “They don’t take but about 50 guys to that.” Most of those come from the Elite series ranks, but Hicks can qualify by winning a Bassmaster Opens series

event. The James River tournament is the first stop on the Northern Open trail, which includes stops on Oneida Lake in Syracuse, N.Y., in August and on Lake Erie at Sandusky, Ohio, in September. Hicks plans to head to Syracuse to try again. “The Classic, that’s the pinnacle of the sport. I mean, that’s what you really want to achieve,” Hicks said. “Pretty much the very best is the only thing that gets there. Team Carter wins battle of Goochland 15-17 teams By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

Goochland has two 15-17 Dixie baseball teams, so it was all-but-impossible for them to get through the season without meeting. But they waited until the end to do so. Team Carter and Team Doczi met three times last week – in a doubleheader on Thursday and a single game Saturday – and Team Carter swept the series. Team Carter came from behind in both games of its twin bill Thursday, eking out a 3-2 extra-inning win in the opener and winning 13-11 in a nightcap ended early because of the late hour. On Saturday, Team Carter won 16-2. In the late game Thursday, Team Carter was down 10-2 before rallying back to go ahead in the fourth inning. Team Doczi had another at-bat coming when the game ended, but as coach of the home team for

It’s very hard to get into.” He said he has been close to qualifying for the classic three times, but saw his chances slip away on the final day of the three-day tournaments. Hicks, who finished ninth in his 2011 Northern Open appearance, used his local knowledge to advantage both times. “I grew up on the James and Chickahominy River,” Hicks said. “I expected I was going to have a good tournament there.” One way his local knowledge helped was in his choice of where to concentrate his effort. Hicks knew the water

We finally bounced back, got the bats going, and once we got on base we made some things happen. It finally turned around and we came out on top. I like seeing that.” Team Doczi might not have gotten as big a lead if Team Carter’s defense had not had some breakdowns early on. “I think some of the boys get a little tired and complacent for a second and kind of maybe drift off in their mind a little bit, then they wake up. So do I,” Carter said. “I guess we were due for some errors,

A lot of the guys were going up near Walker’s Dam. I fished the lower part of the Chickahominy River near the James.” It takes more than knowledge of a map to make a good competitive fisher, however. “The guys would say, mechanically, that they’re all pretty much equal,” Hicks said.

and when it happened, they seemed to happen in a row. But then when we get rid of them – finally get rid of them, we can execute and play well.” A lot of Team Doczi’s problem was lack of pitching depth. “We’ve got one true pitcher

“It just really comes down to, in the end, your mental focus, really. … There’s a lot of concentration and mental game in fishing. Your decisions that you make during the day are everything.” Observational skills are important, too. “Us fishermen, we call it, ‘reading the water,’” Hicks said. “You’ll hear a guy say, ‘Man, that guy can read the water better than anybody I’ve ever seen.’ What they’re meaning is that they can interpret how to get on the fish and establish a pattern to catch fish fast. That’s what it takes to be a good fisherman.” The Bass Pro Shops Northern Open No. 2 begins on August 1. Hicks hopes his reading skills will serve him well.

Aaron Wagstaff walked, stole second and scored on Richard Johnson’s single. Johnson then scored on a double by Brandon Carter. Team Doczi tied in in the fourth. Conner Saunders opened the inning with a single, advanced on a groundout by Peyton Dunlavey, and scored on a single by Jack Rareshide. Over the next inning and a half, both teams loaded the bases without getting a run in. But in the bottom of the fifth, a bases-loaded walk to Johnson brought in the inning run. Team Dozci barely mustered nine players in the Saturday game, thus was rather handicapped as it faced a fullstrength Team Carter. Team Carter’s pitching was dominant as its hurlers picked up 11 strikeouts over the course of five innings.

Benedictine ISO basketball coach By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

Ryan Hall began his tenure as Benedictine’s athletic director Monday with a big item on his to-do list: to replace basketball coach Robert Churchwell III, who is leaving the Cadets to take over at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md. The school competes in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Last year – his only year at Benedictine – Churchwell led the Cadets to a 31-4 record and a Virginia Independent Schools Division I state championship. But Hall said the Our Lady of Good Counsel position was too good an opportunity for Churchwell to pass up. “His family is in the D.C.

area. He’s got a lot of family there,” Hall said. “It’s where he grew up. … Obviously we’re going to miss him, but it’s a great fit for him and his family.” Churchwell attended Gonzaga College High School – also a member of the WCAC – and Georgetown and played professionally for eight years before taking over as basketball coach at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga. He spent eight years there before coming to Benedictine. He is the second Benedictine coach in two years to depart for the WCAC. His predecessor, Sean McAloon, left to take over at St. John’s College High School in 2012. Hall said the primary attribute of a potential replacement

is an understanding of the school and its mission. “Mission and the school first. Basketball second,” Hall said. “Obviously we want someone with experience, and somebody who’s excited and passionate and who wants to do well and continue in our tradition of Benedictine basketball.” Hall said there is no shortlist of potential candidates from last year’s search. “I want to look at all the resumes and applications and all the materials and give everybody what I feel is a fair, equal shot,” Hall said. “I’m very excited to get this opportunity and help get the right person in place. And I feel, like I said, we’ll continue on the excellence of Benedictine Hoops.”
