RANDOLPH ELEMENTARY

pupils given the ‘green light’ By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

Randolph Elementary School has gone green, but, in this case, it’s behavioral and not environmental. Sandra Crowder just completed her first year as Randolph’s principal and during the past school year she instituted a program to help motivate pupils to be of good behavior. “We just call it green and up,” she said following a presentation last week to the Goochland County School Board during the panel’s regular meeting on Tuesday, July 23. “Green and up. That’s where we want to be – green and up.” The “green and up” program consists of a chart with different colors posted in each classroom. Each pupil has his/her name on a clothespin and they either stay in the green section for the day or move up or down based on good or bad behavior. “This was the first year we did these in every single classroom to make sure that there was consistency across the school for what our discipline was,” Crowder said. “I had seen it used in specific classrooms and had used it in my own classroom as a teacher and just found that it worked because kids can move up as well as down on the scale, which really helps them stay see Randolph > page 4 Photo by Ben Orcutt

Sandra Crowder, who just completed her first year as principal at Randolph Elementary School, said the “green and up” program has been a success and helps motivates pupils to be on their best behavior. All pupils start out the day on green and either move up or down the chart based on their behavior. Purple means they have far exceeded expectations and red means their parents will be notified that their behavior is unacceptable and a plan will be put into place to improve it.

School Board announces Marine JROTC program By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer

It’s official: A Marine JROTC program is coming to Goochland High School. James F. Lane, superintendent of Goochland County Public Schools, said he was contacted on Friday by an officer with the U.S. Marine Corps that Goochland’s application to start planning for the program has been officially approved. At the end of his presentation to the Goochland County School Board on Tuesday, July 23, about the upcoming school year, GHS principal Michael Newman said Goochland’s application for the program had been approved, adding official approval would be forthcoming, which it now has. “Mr. Newman, along with CTE [Career & Technical see JROTC > page 2

JROTC continued from > page 1 Education] director Bruce Watson and District 1 board member Mike Payne led the effort in bringing our great system to top priority through a very involved and competitive application process, Lane said. “There will be significant planning that will take place throughout the school year and we will begin receiving equipment from the Marines as soon as this summer. The program is slated to be in place for the start of the 2014-2015 school year, Lane said. “Students will have a multitude of opportunities to participate in activities that teach discipline, critical thinking and collaboration, Lane added. “There is a unique community service component as well that will enable students to exercise leadership skills and contribute to the improvement of their school and greater communities as well. In addition to Newman, principals from the county’s three elementary schools and the middle school also made presentations to the school board last week about plans for the upcoming school year.

“Let me just say, this was all very impressive, board chair John D. Wright said. “Among other things, it is obvious that there is a sense of teamwork and unity among our principals and leaders and I for one can’t wait for school to begin to see the wonderful things that are going to happen this year. During the presentations by the principals, discussion included space needs at the five schools, especially at high school and Randolph Elementary School. “Student enrollment is increasing, especially in the eastern end of Goochland and some schools are experiencing constraints as they seek to develop spaces to house instructional programs for increased student populations, Lane said. “The county CIP [Capital Improvement Plan] includes significant funding in the coming fiscal years on behalf of the schools. We will continue to work cooperatively with the county leadership to address any space needs that arise in our facilities. The facilities committee for GCPS meets on a regular basis to assess building and space needs, Lane said, adding that the division’s official facilities plan will be presented in late fall.

Cat Daddy wows crowd at Enzo’s By Korey Hughes Special Correspondent

Patrons who dine at Enzo’s Italian Chop House on Friday, Aug. 2, will be privy to a spirited performance by the band Cat Daddy. The show will get underway at 8 p.m. at the restaurant, which is located at 36 Broad Street Road in the Broadview Shopping Center in Manakin-Sabot. Cat Daddy has been performing for about 17 years, and the band has been somewhat of a fixture at Enzo’s over the years. Lead singer and guitar player Bill Roberts said the restaurant is one of the members’ favorite places to play in Central Virginia. “It’s always a good party with a great, friendly crowd, Roberts said. “They are very accepting, and you can pretty much throw anything out there – as long as it’s danceable. Cat Daddy’s other members include bass player Gary Jacobs and drummer Stu Grimes. But, each of them shares vocal duties when the trio performs together onstage. As a matter of fact, Roberts said that their harmony is one of the components that make Cat Daddy’s stage show unique. “Everybody sings, and we really focus on three-part harmony, Roberts said. “It’s a beautiful sound when you can get all three people singing with that kind of tight harmony – and it really adds a lot. “And, the good thing about working with guys with that level of experience is that they learn songs very quickly. But, if

the crowd doesn’t respond to a song, we’ll drop it because it’s fairly easy for us to learn new songs, and we put new ones in all the time. Roberts also has enjoyed a successful solo career and has done a string of positive performances on his own. His solo album, “Raw Material, which is an assortment of blues-tinged covers, is available for download on iTunes. In fact, Roberts said that only one of the songs on his album was original, an instrumental called “Hit It. But, he also pointed out that the record’s content isn’t necessarily representative of what you might see when he performs onstage. “The CD was blues, but, truthfully, the market for blues is not all that consistent, Roberts said. “When I play solo, I just do a variety of pop tunes from over the decades. It’s just me, and then I’ll record everything but the lead guitar, and play and sing over the backing tracks (during the shows). But, I record songs that have some shelf life, and classic rock has shelf life. And, when it comes to tunes,

a Cat Daddy performance can run the musical gamut. It’s possible to hear Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative played during the same set with Van Morrison’s “Moondance. Roberts said the band gives guests at Enzo’s time to enjoy their food before the momentum builds to a head. But, before long, patrons might find themselves moving their feet to the music. “If a song isn’t danceable, it’s not going to be in the first set when people are still eating or getting revved up, Roberts said. “From that point, though, you want songs that people can dance to. And, when asked what a Cat Daddy stage show is like, Roberts responded quickly with one word: energetic. “I think any band wants to create energy, Roberts said. “If you throw it out there, it comes back to you from the crowd, and it just builds from there. For reservations at Enzo’s, call 804-784-2962 or visit www. enzositalianchophouse.com. ‘Feed Goochland Club’ donates food Contributed Report

Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) recently received a generous food donation of nearly 1,300 pounds from the “Feed Goochland Club.” “Feed Goochland Club” is the summer project created by Goochland High School juniors Matthew Ashley, Raleigh Marria, Michael Nadder and Carson Sylvester.

They asked for donated brown bags from Martin’s and Food Lion, and then placed a bag on each doorstep in the Huntleigh, Holland Hills, High Grove and Mill Forest subdivisions with a note of needed food items and a pick-up date. A week later, the filled bags were picked up and delivered to the GFCFS Food Pantry. “We wanted to provide a community service in Goochland similar to a service

started by a club at Maggie Walker Governor’s School” said Matthew Ashley. The “Feed RVA Club” at Maggie Walker would make “bag lunches.” After school, the members would drive around Richmond and distribute the meals to the homeless. Because the situation in Goochland is different from that in the city, members of the “Feed Goochland Club” decided they could best help those in need by stocking the shelves of the

continued from > page 1 an anticipated two-day trial for Harris, who faces attempted murder, malicious wounding, assault and battery – third offense and violation of a protective order. He also has been indicted on charges of weapons possession and driving without

a license. Harris was arrested on Dec. 5 after attacking his former girlfriend, a Goochland Middle School teacher, in the school’s parking lot when she arrived for work. Two other teachers pulled Harris off the woman and he fled, turning himself into the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office later that day. Goochland Sheriff James

Agnew credited the two teachers who came to their co-worker’s aid with possibly saving her life. He was originally scheduled to stand trial in June but a change in attorneys caused a delay. Goochland attorney John Amos withdrew from the case and the court appointed former Henrico County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney

Duncan Reid to represent Harris. In June, Harris was sentenced to two years in prison in Henrico County Circuit Court for felony destruction of property and theft of a firearm from the apartment he once shared with the Goochland teacher. Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Stokes said the county’s grand jury indicted Harris on two additional counts

in June, a third offence of assault and battery, a felony and violation of a protective order, a misdemeanor. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office originally asked for a one day trial at the May arraignment but Stokes asked for two days last week. “We will be calling more witnesses than we thought,” he said after the arraignment.

It motivated them to get to that level.” The reward for receiving a purple designation, Crowder said, is that pupils get a laminated item that goes on a necklace. The program has been a success, Crowder said. “It has been because it’s a visual and the students actually move their own clip,” she said. “Kids like to touch things, so actually moving it helped them to remember what to do.”

And once they get to red, that’s when they get a visit with me that’s not as pleasant where I have to call home.” Being sent to the principal for achieving purple status occurs immediately after such a designation in the classroom, Crowder said, as it does if the pupil is to be admonished for earning a spot on red. “Each student has their own little calendar and then they color the date whatever they ended up with for the day so that their parent knows, ‘Oh, they went to purple today,’” Crowder said. “So they color their square purple.” Teachers, pupils and parents have bought into the program, Crowder said. “What’s interesting is Darlene Martin, who’s taught for 30 years, said, ‘I’ve used

Farmer’s Market offers produce, escape from stress

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

www.goochlandgazette.com

Pets of the Week

By Roslyn Ryan Contributing Columnist I don’t mean to brag here, but I’m pretty confident that there is one area of 21st century living in which I am among the elite. The best of the best. The crème de la crème. And that area, in case you’re wondering, is worrying. I’m certainly not saying I have all that much to actually worry about – or that I spend all my time worrying – just that I am capable of going from zero to “panic mode” in the blink of an eye. I am the one with the chewed nails, the perpetually furrowed brow, the sneaking suspicion I might have left the iron plugged in, on “high,” and facedown on a pile of quilts (this is totally irrational, given how seldom I iron and that I don’t actually own any quilts, but still). After a particularly trying day, one of those days where the other shoe has dropped, followed by about 15 more, I knew I had to make a break for it. So I headed for the one place I knew would help soothe the psychic damage the day had wrought: the farmer’s market. If there is a tried and true definition of the phrase “laid-back,” it can be found by wandering through the colorful tents and carts at just about any farmer’s market worth its sea salt. The typical market vendor, in my experience, is not the type of person who radiates worry or

gnaws their nails. Their pride in the things they sell also is pretty infectious: You have not truly considered a carrot, for example, until you have chatted up the woman who raised it from seed. Suddenly that carrot that you might have carelessly flung into your cart at the grocery store becomes – if not a thing of wonder – at least the start to a wonderful conversation. As I meandered from stall to stall, I began to feel just a bit lighter. Maybe it was the smell of fresh-cut grass in the air or the goodies to sample at each stop. Maybe it was the fact that it’s very hard to worry about looking at deadlines or to-do lists while inhaling the scent of a perfectly formed cube of lavender goat’s milk soap. By the time I left the market I’d had at least five good conversations and picked up the ingredients for a delicious dinner. I also had indulged every one of my senses and reconnected with a world that doesn’t stop spinning when my hard drive crashes or mind that I don’t always have all the answers. As the summer and the produce rolls in, I would encourage every resident to take advantage of the local farmers markets in our area. After all, perhaps the best thing they have to offer is something that you don’t even have to pay for: a real honest-to-goodness break.

Justice not served in Martin case Like many in America and around the world, my heart went out to [Trayvon] Martin’s parents in their pursuit of justice in an area of the country where it proved to slip away. Many laws are developed and legislated for the sake of

modifying, controlling and preventing criminal behavior. In Zimmerman’s case in Sanford, Fla., color-blind justice in America was on trial. As I see it, a 17-year-old African-American minding his own business was followed and killed by a man with no authority to pursue him. When Zimmerman made a 911 call to report that Martin was in the area, the dispatcher told Zimmerman not to follow Martin; Zimmerman followed Martin anyway; whether Martin turned to defend himself or chose to run, he was unarmed.

Goochland teams prepare for Dixie World Series By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

Two of Goochland’s Dixie baseball teams survived their respective state tournaments last week and emerged state champions. Now the two teams must embark upon a new, though not entirely unfamiliar, adventure – each earned a trip to the Dixie Baseball World Series. Goochland’s Boys’ team swept its opponents in the Dixie 13-14 state tournament at Mason Day Complex in South Boston last week to advanced to the Dixie Boys Baseball World Series in Seneca, S.C. Goochland’s Majors’ team likewise swept the 11-12 tournament at Amelia last week and is headed to the Dixie Youth Majors World Series in Laurel, Miss. Both tournaments – in double-elimination format – begin Saturday and end the following Wednesday. Goochland’s Boys begin their World Series campaign against Georgia Saturday at 4 p.m. Goochland’s Majors also begin their quest for a World Series title Saturday – against Alabama at 7:30 p.m. The Boys’ team members are Dixie World Series veterans, making their third trip to the Series in four years. Boys’ coach Greg Harlow said prior World Series experience is important. “The first year we went, we went 0-2,” Harlow said. “I think we were just happy to get there. The second year we went back – last year was the second year – we went 2-2 and came in fourth out of 12, which is pretty good for a Virginia team. … I think knowing what you’re going into is a big deal.” The Majors’ team has three players with World Series experience: Austin Dehner, Wyatt Murray and Alex Poling. Assistant coach Jay Poling

agrees that having players with World Series experience is important. “The three of them have been big leaders for us throughout this whole process, from first practice on,” Jay Poling said. “They’ve been there. They know what it takes.” The three also helped show their teammates what they were playing for. “We actually had them bring their [World Series] jerseys to practice one day,” Poling said. “When we go to

the World Series we quit representing Goochland. We represent Virginia, so we get Virginia uniforms. The kids got a big kick out of seeing those uniforms – and that’s been something that they’ve been working toward.” Harlow said the Boys’ squad is solid from the top to the bottom of the batting order. “It’s kind of a unique team. Obviously, in my opinion right now the 14-year-old kids are physically more talented, and some of the younger kids have

more World Series experience, so that’s a kind of a balancing act,” Harlow said. “We have 13 players on the team and one through 13 are good ballplayers. That’s pretty unusual for a small community like Goochland. … Obviously, if we don’t play our game, we could easily be beat, but typically these kids play hard and play well together.” Jay Poling said his team is full of potential leaders. “Leaders emerge in every tournament,” Jay Poling said. “We’ll have different guys who are successful – different guys who were successful in districts, different guys who were successful in states. Right now, our pitching has been very, very strong – Alex Poling, Wyatt Murray, Tyler Gentry have all been very, very good pitchers for us. “Austin Rose has been

amazing for us behind the plate as catcher. He had very few passed balls and kept the runners in check on the field. Hitting, Austin Dehner has been doing a great job. He’s our leadoff hitter. He kind of gets things started for us.” Harlow said Virginia teams often struggle in SEC country where strong college programs help inspire strong scholastic and youth baseball programs. Jay Poling agrees. “There’s some traditionally good teams,” Jay Poling said. “Louisiana’s always good. Florida’s always good. South Carolina’s always good. It’s kind of funny – it almost follows what you see what you see in college baseball. Where college baseball’s big, these teams are good.” Throughout the Dixie baseball region, Poling said the Virginia teams can expect a

high level of play. “Dixie Youth Baseball is obviously a very Southern organization,” Jay Poling said. “It’s very, very, very big in the South. Dixie in places like Florida and Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee – they don’t take second fiddle to any of the other leagues, like Little League and Cal Ripken. It’s bigtime baseball, so we’ll see some extremely good teams.” What they probably should not expect are a lot of dingers – home runs – particularly for the 13-14 year olds. “At this age … we play a 54foot mound and 80-foot bases,” Harlow said. “Obviously, the field’s not built for that. You’re playing on a man’s field. Basically the fence is usually 320 to 350. In the state tournament, we hit three home runs ... and that was on a 280-foot fence. On normal fields, at 13-14, you’ve really got to get ahold of [the ball] to get a home run.” But Harlow said that plays into some of the Goochland Boys’ team strengths. “That helps us. We’re a pretty fast team and we work a lot on baserunning,” Harlow said. “We work on the fundamentals a lot. The bigger the field plays to our advantage, especially with what we’ve seen so far.” No matter how they fare in their respective World Series, the members of Goochland’s teams will like get an experience that will yield benefits for the rest of their lives. “I think the best part is learning to be a team,” Harlow said. “This is a pretty special group of kids. We practice hard as a team. We play hard as a team. And they play really smart.” But work is not everything. “They have a lot of fun even when they’re not on the baseball field,” Harlow said.

No summer vacation for Bulldogs football By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

The Goochland Bulldogs have not been taking their summer after winning the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state football championship lightly. Quite a few of them have been working, and working rather hard, all summer. Goochland, along with a number of other teams, including Powhatan, Deep Run, Glen Allen, Mills Godwin and Trinity Episcopal have been participating in a 7-on-7 football league that met, weather permitting, twice a week in June and July. The main focus of 7-on-7 workouts are practice the passing game – from both sides of the ball. “Basically, it’s the [offensive] skill people against your defensive skill people, your linebackers and [defensive backs] – seven on seven focus-

ing on the passing game,” said Goochland head coach Joe Fowler. “With the advent of the spread offenses that everybody’s running, the passing game becomes such a cornerstone of so many teams.” Fowler said 7-on-7 workouts have become a necessity, even for teams whose offense is based on the run. “Even if you don’t throw the ball much, you have to do it so that you can prepare against the teams that do throw the ball a lot,” Fowler said. “It’s been a great benefit for us because over the years it’s gotten us more diverse in our passing game. “I think we’ve thrown the ball more in the past three years than we’d thrown it in the previous 10. I think that’s something that’s going to continue to increase as our kids – as our skilled kids – get more acclimated to the passing game.” Goochland’s sophomore quarterback Reid Chenault

said the workouts have helped him. “I get to know my receivers’ routes,” Chenault said. “We just get more comfortable with each other throwing the ball.” It helps the receivers, too. “It’s improved the team,” said Goochland wide receiver Cephus Harden. “We come together. We learn our passing routes better – just getting better every week we come out here.” It also helps the team to face Group AAA competition rather than the Group A teams they face all season long. “We feel like we could play with a lot of the bigger schools around the state,” Fowler said. “I’m not saying we could play against Ocean Lakes or Lake Taylor or those guys, but we feel like we can hold our own against [most] teams. Going against [AAA] teams over the summer does nothing but make us better come the regular season.”

Still time to sign up for Goochland Triathlon By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com

If you want to run, bike or swim on an August morning in Goochland County, there is time for you to sign up for the third annual Goochland Sprint Triathlon, said event coordinator Kevin Reid. Even if you just want to volunteer, triathlon organizers will be happy to have you show up. Reid said the deadline for online registration is Wednesday, Aug. 7. Both runners and volunteers may register in person as late as the morning of the event, which is

Saturday, Aug. 10. “Participants may register either Friday night during packet pickup or Saturday morning if they want to do that,” Reid said. “Volunteers can register at any time by emailing me direct or they can just show up and we’ll be happy to utilize their services.” Volunteers will be needed as early as 5:15 a.m. Saturday.

The race begins at 6:45 a.m. The race field is diverse, with participants ranging in age from 10 years old to 80 — Mechanicsville’s Gene White is slated to participate, which may make this his third straight year as the oldest participant in the triathlon. Arguably the most prominent participant will be Michael Harlow, owner of Endorphin Fitness. “Aside from being an accomplished triathlete himself,” Reid said, “Endorphic Fitness is the premier triathlon training facility or program, specializing in youth triathlons.”

RCC set to hold 6th Eagle Classic By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The fairways and greens at Richmond Country Club are lush and green, the recipient of an abundance of rain during the early weeks of summer. The setting is in prime shape to host its sixth annual Eagle Classic, which returns to Goochland August 12 to 18 for six days of golf. The Eagle Classic is a Symetra Tour event that couples social activities with action-packed competition among some of the country’s finest up and coming stars. Many describe it as a chance to see professional golf with a personal touch. Players are accessible and the hospitality is legendary as Richmond Country Club hosts the LPGA developmental tour just as the competition heats up with only five stops left on the circuit. The stop is a make or break opportunity for many of the

world’s rising players to gain entry to LPGA tour. Last year’s winner, Paola Moreno, is a current LPGA tour member. The Eagle Classic was her first win of the 2012 season. Richmond Country Club will host a Pro-Am Eagle Classic tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, allowing players an opportunity to team with one of the LPGA Futures Tour players. Teams of four are paired with a professional for the event that begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. Local musician Robbin Thompson will perform Thursday night, and a Family Fun Day is scheduled for Saturday.

It is a full schedule of events including golf, music, food and fun that caps off with Military Appreciation Day on Sunday, the final day of the tournament. The tournament itself pits 144 players vying for a shot in the LPGA, and, with the season winding down, it has become known for its dramatic finishes. Last year, Mareno stormed the last four holes to erase a two shot deficit and take her first career win in the 54-hole event. Scores of volunteers will be needed handle jobs such as: standard bearers (open to teens and adults), marshals, spotters, parking attendants, cart drivers (golf experience needed), and shuttle drivers. Volunteers can sign up for one or more days. For more information and to volunteer on-line, go to www.eagleclassic.com or contact the Eagle Classic volunteer coordinator at eagleclassicva@ gmail.com.

Byrd Elementary School students Makayla Pannell, left and Ashley Athey eat lunch last Friday with their mentor Dolores Nicholson at a special event to recognize the efforts of the BES mentoring program.

Students thank their mentors at Byrd Elementary School

Kaitlyn King admires the iris at the 9th annual Spring Garden Fest at the Goochland campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds last Saturday afternoon. King, a horticulture student at JSR, was one of more than 600 visitors who turned out on a perfect day for the event sponsored by the Goochland - Powhatan Master Gardeners Association. Master Gardener Linda Toler, coordinator for the event, was pleased. “It’s the best turnout we’ve ever had,” she said. This year’s festival including a new children’s garden tent, she said, in addition to always popular workshops, of which some of the most popular were classes on succulents, bonsai and Shitake mushrooms.

Goochland veterinarian Beth Schooley teared up as she talked about whatbeingamentoratByrdElementary School means to her. “I don’t have any kids of my own,” she explained. “It’s a very rewarding experience,” she said. Schooley was wearing a paper wrist corsage colored in crayon and carrying four letters from girls at the school thanking her for being a mentor.

It was all a part of last Friday’s lunch organized to thank the 15 or so mentors who meet with more than 30 students each Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. The boys program has been going on for two years. A girls program was added this year. “I think of them as step granddads,” said fourth-grader Steven Parrish, as he worked on downing his third sub sandwich, provided courtesy of the Goochland Rotary Club, which provides mentors along with Second Union Baptist Church and Forest Grove Christian Church. “Seeing how the young men have developed over the school year has definitely been rewarding to the mentors,” said mentor Calvin Hopkins. “It helps them become better citizens.” Deacon Curtis Parrish of nearby

Second Union Baptist Church, said he has seen a difference since the mentoring program started. “I can see an improvement in their Sunday School work,” he said. Byrd principal James Hopkins praised the program. “It’s a great way to involve county members with our children,” he said, and said the cliché “it takes a village” applied to the way the program worked. School counselor Kathy Albert, who coordinates the girls’ program, said it gives children a chance to learn how to talk to grown ups about leadership and character. Maykayla Pannell and Ashley Athey sat down to eat their lunch with mentor Dolores Nicholson, who joined see Mentors > page 5
