GCPS receives state Strategic Compensation Grant By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer
Thanks to a grant from Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office, Goochland County Public Schools teachers have an opportunity to earn as much as $5,000 for exemplary performance. Dr. James F. Lane, superintendent, talked about the Strategic Compensation Grant program, which is administered by the Virginia Department of Education, during last Tuesday’s Goochland County School Board meeting.
The school division received $450,000 in funding and was one of only 13 statewide to receive a portion of the $4.5 million awarded. McDonnell presented the awards during an Aug. 9 press conference at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem during his statewide “This Commonwealth of Opportunity” tour. “Teachers who stay late, mentor new colleagues, accept assignments in hard-to-staff schools and whose students consistently do well deserve more than our thanks,” McDonnell

said. “They deserve to be rewarded.” A broad range of people provided input for the grant application submitted by GCPS, Lane said. “We had community members, teachers, administrators involved in the process and we’re really excited to win the award,” he said. “The closest school division to the metro area that won was Amelia, but – other than Amelia – no one else in the Richmond metro region was awarded.” The grant applies to the current fiscal year, Lane said. “We’ll work with teachers through-
out the year through the evaluation process and through some of our assessments to determine exemplary status and – if a teacher is determined exemplary – the amount of bonus they get will be based on the number of points that they earn,” Lane said. “The board will set strategic priorities and if teachers are able to achieve some of those board-approved strategic priorities, then they’ll receive a bonus and so the teachers that take on the most projects, initiatives or have the highest marks will receive as much as a $5,000 bonus.”
“There are many people to thank and it really was a great working team that got it done,” Lane said about the grant committee. Other state officials who attended the Aug. 9 press conference included Dr. Patricia I. Wright, state superintendent of schools, and Virginia Secretary of Education Laura Fornash. “I congratulate Dr. Lane, county teachers and the Goochland County School Board for their willingness to think outside the box and take see Grant > page 4

Less than a month before Benedictine College Preparatory School’s planned first day of school, the administration received a very important piece of paper on Friday, Aug. 16 – a certificate of occupancy. Without the certificate, issued by Goochland County, the school could not conduct any activities, including student and parent tours, at its new Goochland home, The Abbey. According to headmaster Jesse Grapes, the certificate was the culmination of many inspections of the site. When the county building inspector delivered the document, Grapes said staff members “had a little celebration in the lobby.” In an e-mail message to parents, students and staff, Grapes said the school will open on Tuesday, Sept. 3, as planned, and will host a celebration at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, just before the school’s first home football game against Woodberry Forest. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli will be on hand to offer remarks, Grapes wrote. Since the announcement, Grapes said he has heard from
It’s a busy time of year for Goochland High School football coach Joe Fowler. Busy with seven-man drills and weight room preparation for the upcoming season, he’s focused on getting his 2012 state championship Bulldogs ready. But, there’s one thing Fowler hopes to accomplish before the season begins. He’s involved in an effort to enroll his fellow state coaches in a program he believes is important, beneficial and timely. For the past three seasons, Goochland has participated in the Coach to Cure MD campaign sponsored by the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, a group formed with specific goal of curing Duchenne, a genetic, degenerative disease and the most destructive form of Muscular Dystrophy. He is encouraging high school coaches across the state to join in the effort. While college participation n the program has soared, high school enrollment has lagged behind. Fowler said he

lots of enthusiastic parents and students. “Everyone’s excited for a new school year, a beautiful campus and football season – it’s fall, Grapes said. The major construction work needed to prepare the school is officially complete, Grapes said, but cosmetic work and landscaping will go on for a few months. Work has continued over the summer on the school site, despite a flurry of legal activity and appeals. Most recently, a Goochland County Circuit Court judge denied a request by residents near the school site to halt work on road improvements until the Goochland County Board of Zoning Appeals has a chance to review an appeal of the school’s Plan of Development. The board
will review the plan as part of the appeal process during a meeting set for Monday, Aug. 26. “The one thing that I’m very pleased with is the County of Goochland’s professionalism and attention to detail throughout this process, Grapes said. “I think they’ve been dutiful and rigorous in carrying out the responsibilities of their respective offices regarding development in the county. When asked what his next big hurdle is, Grapes said, “Well, we have to teach 275 boys how to walk around a new school without getting lost. That’s no small task, since the transition will expand the school’s campus size from two acres to 50. Goochland County officials could not be reached for further comment. The River Road site has already been used by the school for most of its sports programs. Efforts to relocate the entire school
there from its previous site on Sheppard Street in Richmond’s West End, which began in 2011, were placed on hold last summer while Benedictine acquired land near the campus entrance for required road improvements. Once that happened in November, Goochland County approved the idea. Benedictine was founded in 1911 by monks from North Carolina. The Catholic military school’s original campus could not expand due to development around it and for years has been a source of continuing expense for the monks, who ultimately decided to move the school to their other property, The Abbey. The new site is located 12 miles from the original location. The Catholic Diocese in Richmond purchased the former Benedictine High School. Ken Odor contributed to this report.

Forest landowners retreat to the woods Eastern Virginia landowners can learn more about actively managing their forest lands during the fall Forest Landowners’ Retreat, to be held Sept. 6-8 at the Airfield Conference Center in Wakefield. Topics will include forest management planning, pine silviculture, wildlife management, forest health, estate planning and more. “This program provides a great introduction to forestry and forest management issues, especially for those new to land ownership,” said Jennifer Gagnon of Virginia Tech’s Forest Landowner Education Program.
“We use a combination of classroom and field sessions, taught by experts, to get participants fully engaged in learning,” said Ellen Powell of the Virginia Department of Forestry. “The weekend retreat format also allows people to share their experiences with other landowners.” The cost for the retreat, which covers meals, lodging and materials, is $60 per person or $120 per couple lodging dorm-style, or $160 per couple lodging hotel-style. A commuter option with no lodging is available for $40 per person or $80 per couple. Sponsoring partners for the retreat are Virginia Department of Forestry,Virginia Cooperative
Extension, and the Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program. Additional support is provided by the Practicing Foresters Institute. To register online or download a brochure, visit www.forestupdate.frec.vt.edu. The deadline to register is Friday, Aug. 23. For more information, contact Gagnon at 540231-6391 or jgagnon@vt.edu. Coach continued from > page 1 wants to change that. “I know that Coach to Cure was first started with college football programs in mind,” Fowler said. “But, if everyone of the over 25,000 high schools in the country took part, we could reach a lot more people than 300 colleges could,” he added. While Fowler’s last two seasons have produced state final playoff teams, the players also have formed a special relation-

ship with a young boy with Duchenne, Jack Ridolphi. “A lot of teenage boys have a tendency to be a little bit selfabsorbed and not realize what is going on around them, both good and bad,” the coach said. “I know that the time our players have spent with Jack has been monumental to their growth as young men. It’s been a mutually beneficial arrangement. Jack loves spending time with the team, and the players treat him like family.” “The past two seasons, we have gotten to have Jack be part of our team. To have him on the sidelines and to have him go out and be part of the coin toss has been very special,” Fowler said. “Jack may not be able to able to play football when he gets to high school so the chance to be part of our team is a great thing. I hope it means as much to him as it does to us.”
Fowler schools his players on the basics, but he also teaches toughness and a true appreciation for the things that are most important in life. As a parent, one child’s illness hit close to home for the Goochlander. “As a parent with two young kids, it is hard to put into words the impact that Jack has made on our coaches. It could just as easily been one of our kids who was diagnosed with Duchenne,” he said. And when it comes to toughness, Fowler said Jack sets the perfect example. “Sometimes the toughest person isn’t the biggest or the strongest. It is the smallest and the slowest who is the toughest because of all he has to overcome to even get out of bed and face the day,” he said. And that lesson isn’t lost in the Bulldog locker room, a commitment that doesn’t last for just one season. “Jack shows our players and

coaches what toughness really is and he inspires us to work harder and to reach our goals. We want Jack to know that we are in his corner as he faces the obstacles that he has to deal with on a day to day basis.” Fowler is urging his fellow coaches to take a few simple steps to get involved with Coach to Cure. “It is so easy to get involved that I can’t imagine any team that wouldn’t want to be part of the effort,” he said. “You don’t need to buy special uniforms or wear any certain color. The coaches simply wear a patch on their arm and we have our radio and public announcers read some prewritten statements at certain times during the game about who to donate. According to Dr. Peter M. Gretz, assistant superintendent for business operations for GCPS, “The Strategic Compensation Grant program is part of McDonnell’s
“ALL STUDENTS” education reform agenda and was approved by the 2013 General Assembly.” In other School Board business, GCPS has submitted applications for: A $50,000 grant to be used in preparing for a pilot year-round school initiative at Randolph Elementary School. Pupils who participate in the program would start school in mid-July of 2014, and attend classes for nine-week sessions, followed by three-week intercessions. A $100,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Education for the installation of internal security cameras in the high school/middle school complex. Installation of the security cameras would complete three initial recommendations of the School Safety Task Force, which was initiated by Lane during the past school year.

Goochland Sprint Triathlon
By Jim Ridolphi, Contributing Columnist While covering an area School Board meeting recently, I listened with interest as a 14-year-old student described a nightmarish episode that most of us call middle school. The young man said a combination of verbal and physical harassment had resulted in a fear of school that permeated every aspect of his life. The youth recounted how he looked for ways to avoid attending classes, always carefully hiding the true reasons for his seemingly hatred for school. A family member said the harassment turned a once straightA student into a borderline achiever who may not pass his current grade level. I suppose it’s something we don’t like to think about as we prepare our kids for back to school. It’s a busy time of year, and there’s plenty to do without worrying about your child being picked on at school, right? But, I did hear the fear in that young boy’s voice as he described a recent incident where his nose was broken. And, yes, I took it all with a grain of salt, knowing there are two sides to every story, especially a teenage fight. I made no judgment on who started the fight or who assaulted

whom, but I did note an interesting observation made by the student. He stressed that many youths are bullied and tell no one due to embarrassment or fear of retribution. He spoke of a silent culture that allows the incidents to continue, almost acknowledging it as a rite of passage. It isn’t, and no child should suffer the isolation or oppression of bullying. This message hasn’t escaped state legislators who have passed several measures to more clearly define and deal with the problem. Even with the added state efforts, bullying continues and how localities report those incidents is far from uniform. I think it’s fair to say most of the cases fall through the cracks, especially statistically. The current bullying policies in many localities lacks one important element: a dependable and quantitative method of evaluating how anti bullying policies are working. As the young man closed his comments, he suggested a studentbased solution to the problem, where student councils hand out punishment for violations. Coupled with extensive education for and by students in the form of assemblies, clubs or activities, many think it’s a see Character > page 7

On Saturday, Aug. 10, a group of Goochland County officials joined to participate in the 2013 Goochland Sprint Triathlon in the Courthouse Village. They included Chairman Ken Peterson and Vice Chairman Manuel Alvarez Jr., members of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors; Chairman John D. Wright of the Goochland County School Board; Sheriff James L. Agnew, a constitutional officer; and Dr. James F. Lane, superintendent and Assistant Superintendent Peter M. Gretz, leaders of Goochland County Public Schools . They purposefully ran together to demonstrate the commitment to teamwork that exists in Goochland County between its leaders, whether it is in the board room or on the field. Each member of the group powered through and finished strong. Shown are, from left, Gretz, Agnes, Peterson, Wright, Lane and Alvarez. Held in the heart of the Courthouse, the Goochland Sprint Triathlon featured a 300-yard, outdoor pool swim followed by a fast 12.5-mile bike course circling the Courthouse area. It finished with a scenic two-loop 5K run. The event benefited the Goochland Family YMCA, the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, and the March of Dimes NICU Family Support. The Goochland Sprint Triathlon was organized and presented by Set Up Events.

Song sings victory tune at Eagle Classic By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com
For the first two days of the Eagle Classic at Richmond Country Club this weekend, golfers battled primarily against each other and themselves. For the final day on Sunday, they had to battle the weather, too. One might call it the Battle of Sodden Field. But in a performance that demonstrated as little inclination to let up as the rain that fell ceaselessly from first tee to final putt Sunday, Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., led all three days of the tournament to claim a three-stroke victory over four second-place finishers in the Symetra tour event. Song finished the tournament with an 8-under-par score of 206. Jean Chua of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kendall Dye of Edumond, Okla., Stefanie Kenoyer of Lighthouse Point, Fla., and Perrine Delacour of SaintCloud, France finished at 5under 211. On a day when squeegeemen on the greens were the tournament heroes, Song

focused on tuning out the distractions. “My feet are wet, and my toes are wet, and so all I was trying to do was to try to zone out the rain,” Song said. “I guess that’s what I did today.” She did not do too good of a job zoning things out when
she first stepped on the course Sunday, however. “I wasn’t hitting it good the first couple of holes,” Song said. But the weather gave her a much-needed timeout shortly after 11 a.m. when the rain rendered the course unplayable. Before play resumed at
1:30 p.m., golfers were allowed some time on the driving range. “I think the break, the delay got me more focused,” Song said. “Thankfully they let us hit some balls on the range before we went out and I think I fixed it.”
Song’s first birdie of the day, which came after the break, helped boost her confidence. She got some added motivation to do well midway through the round when she noticed a host of golfers tied for second. “I did see [the scores] on nine,” Song said. “I think that’s what made me birdie 11 and 12. I knew they were behind me and I knew I had to do something.” Song coasted through the final holes with a three-point
lead, but a battle was going on with six fellow golfers battling for second place. One of them was Kenoyer, who began the day in a three-way tie for eighth place. “I’m very excited about the way I played today,” Kenoyer said. “I’m really happy with the way I finished. In conditions like this, an under-par round is huge. … It’s my best finish on tour so far.” Kenoyer said the condisee Song >page 9
Golfer renews career years after injury By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com
Katy Harris just won’t give up. Harris, a South Bend, Ind., native who lives in Houston, had a promising collegiate golf career at Louisiana State University when a devastating wrist injury at the Southeastern Conference championship in 2001 sidelined her for years. But the injury could not keep her off a golf course forever, and now she is fighting to get – and keep – a spot on the LPGA tour.
“I hit a ball in a plugged lie in a water hazard,” Harris said. “It loosened a joint in the back of my right hand. I was able to finish the season – it didn’t hurt right away, but the more golf I played, the more it hurt.” The following year, she had two surgeries on her hand, but the pain would not let up. “That was it for me for golf,” Harris said. While she gave up golf, she got on with her life. She and her husband, Chad, began a family. First came a son, Owen, now 6, and then a daughter, Emma, now 4.
By the time Emma was 18 months, Harris thought it might be a good idea to snatch some time for herself. She found her respite on the golf course. “I started to play nine holes just to get out of the house and get a little personal time,” Harris said. “My hand didn’t hurt.” Her renewed relationship with the game forced her to make a decision about her old dream. “My game was in decent shape for nine years’ off,” Harris said. “It’s always been a
dream of mine, since I was a little girl, to be a golfer and a mom. So it was now or never if I was going to give it a shot. I didn’t want to be one of those who looked back at life and wondered what would have happened if I tried.” Instead of wondering, she tried – and earned an LPGA card for the 2012 season. That alone would seem a victory, but Harris is not ready to move on. She wants to get back on the LPGA tour and stay there. “I’m lucky enough that my hand is healthy enough to be back and that I have the

opportunity to do this, but just being out here is not my motivation. It’s not my goal,” Harris said. “I want to be one of the
best players out there. That’s what drives me and that’s what I work hard for. … I’m not done.”

I didn’t play perfect. I missed a couple of putts – you know, the water got in the way a couple of times. What can you do? But I kind of let those go a lot easier than normal. So, in that respect, it was almost easier.” Another contender for

quiet honeymoon period to get used to the job, Hall faced a big task: to replace basketball coach Robert Churchwell III, who left after a year – capped by Benedictine’s Virginia Independent School’s Division I state championship – to take over at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, Md. “It was quite a challenge,” Hall said. “It was something I was excited to do. … To second place fell away on the final hole. Isabelle Boineau of Marseille, France, was feeling quite confident, so she decided to be aggressive on the 18th hole. Instead, her tee shot ended among some oaks off the left side of the fairway. Her second shot ended up on the right side of the fairway, where the canopy of another oak partially blocked approach to the green. “I wanted to hit a driver down here to have a short shot and maybe have a chance to make a birdie to be 6-under and alone in second instead of tied for second,” Boineau said.
become athletic director and hire a basketball coach at what I think is the best basketball program in the state, it was a great learning experience.” The learning experience is one of many Hall has sought out in preparation for the athletic director job. Those include a number of internships as well as a completion of a master’s degree program in sports leadership and management from “I was a little greedy. I should have just hit a three-wood and kept to my strategy.” The victory was an important one for Song, who wants to return to the LPGA tour. The top 10 finishers in the Symetra Tour will earn their LPGA card next year. Prior to the Eagle Classic, Song was 16th in the rankings, but this victory – her second this year – should help her move up. “This means so much,” Song said. “I don’t want to play [on the Symetra Tour] for too long. I just want to see all my friends out there, too, and play well and not come back.”

St. Catherine’s field hockey coach Don Warner was not quite done with his summer travels after the Saints began their two-a-day practices Monday. Warner, a member of the USA Field Hockey men’s over-50 team, just returned from Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he and his teammates competed in the European Masters Open at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club. “I’m in the middle of unpacking,” Warner said. “I’ve got two bags in front of me and wet socks from today’s practice.” The American team played teams from England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland and Wales in the tournament, which began
Saturday, Aug. 10 and ended on Sunday, Aug. 18. While they did not win any of their games, they fought to a 2-2 tie against the Netherlands and stayed close to their other opponents – not bad for a team that, because of its vastly different geographic scale compared with that of its opponents, could not get together for practice until all the members arrived in Ireland. “We fell short, but it’s tough for us to get together to practice,” Warner said. “We flew over there on Friday and practiced Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We played five games in five days and I flew back Sunday, so it was a quick, great, positive experience.”

For nearly two months, Ryan Hall has had a new job at Benedictine. For about three weeks, he has had another new job at home. At the beginning of July, Hall succeeded John Fogarty Benedictine’s athletic director. At the beginning of August, he became a dad. Despite the rapid increase in his daily workload, he is having fun. “I love it, I absolutely love it,” Hall said of his new job(s). “I’m staying busy and doing a lot of different stuff.” Hall, who has served for years as Benedictine’s soccer and wrestling coach – was well prepared for his new Benedictine job. “I served as assistant athletic director the year before last under Mr. Fogarty,” Hall said. “He taught me a lot. I learned a ton from him and picked his brain. He really got my feet wet and allowed me for a pretty smooth transition. … So it wasn’t cold-turkey, by any means.” The preparation came in handy.
