whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and indicates that no alcohol test was administered by law enforcement officers. “We don’t have answers to a lot of questions — we’re still working on it, Agnew said. Goochland Chamber of Commerce hosts Annual Golf Tournament On Tuesday, Sept. 10, local business leaders will gather for a day of golf during the 22nd annual Goochland County Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at Sycamore Creek Golf Course at 1991 Manakin Road in Manakin-Sabot. Bonnie Creasy, executive director of the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce, said this year’s event was planned by a committee headed by chairperson Renae Moore. When asked why the golf tournament has remained popular for so many years, Creasy said it gives business professionals a chance to interact with one another in a fun environment. “I think that it’s the only one that’s made up of members of the business community, Creasy said. “And, it’s just always been a popular tournament for chamber members and for businesses in the county. Even though entertainment will be a high point of the proceedings, the tourney also has another honorable aim. “The goal of the Goochland Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament is to raise revenue for our scholarship fund for Goochland high school seniors, Creasy said. “A portion of the proceeds go towards

Police seek clues to solve murder of real estate agent Contributed Report

Just before 6 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2003, Joan Wood Weigelhofer’s life came to a tragic end at her Goochland County real estate office. She had been shot and killed inside Busy Bee Realty Company at 4119 Broad Street Road in Weigelhofer Gum Spring. A witness reported seeing a late-model, dark-colored sport utility vehicle parked in front of the realty office around 4:45 p.m. that day. Troopers with the Virginia State Police said they believe that vehicle may have been

used by Weigelhofer’s killer. She was last seen alive around 3:50 p.m. that same day. Over the past 10 years, Sgt. Thomas Molnar said, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office has interviewed multiple witnesses and developed numerous leads in connection with the case. However, Molnar said investigators still need that one critical piece of information to bring Weigelhofer’s killer to justice. “Someone who routinely travels that stretch of Broad Street Road in Goochland County, near the Gum Spring intersection of Cross County Road, witnessed something

that day, but has yet to come forward,” said Virginia State Police Special Agent James H. Reisch, the case agent pursuing this investigation. “This witness could have information that is instrumental in solving this case. Throughout the active investigation, information and evidence has been collected and analyzed to help solve this case and that would lead to the suspect being apprehended and successfully prosecuted. Someone has that piece of information that would help identify the suspect and bring closure to Joan’s family.” The Virginia State Police asks that anyone with information to contact the Virginia State Police at 804-553-3408. All information is confidential.

Miley, others learn it only takes one bad deed to ruin a reputation By Roslyn Ryan, Contributing Columnist In the days after former tween idol Miley Cyrus’ widely panned performance at the MTV Video Music Awards — one that was, to put it delicately, “suggestive” — the general consensus across the social media realm was that Cyrus had gone too far. From a marketing standpoint, many added, she also had done some serious damage to her brand. I have to admit I sided with the majority on this one: Cyrus’ performance was noteworthy for all the wrong reasons and, perhaps, even worse, lacking any originality. But that is what it is. The thing I have kept coming back to is this idea of a person having a brand: a way of selling themselves to the world — and not just celebrities. The fact is, thanks to Facebook and a half dozen other social media sites, people today really do have the opportunity to establish and maintain their own brands, offering up to the world a carefully curated picture of who they are (or, in most cases, who they would like us to think they are). This, of course, is a doubleedged sword if you happen to be one of today’s young social media aficionados.

For all you freshly-minted college students, those of you who will be spending the next few years on a wonderful journey of selfdiscovery, please remember that not everything you do needs to be broadcast to the masses. Have a question about whether something is web-worthy? Just run it through a simple, two-question test: 1. Would I want my mom to see this? 2. Would I want my boss (or future boss) to see this? If the answer to either of these questions is “no,” think twice before hitting “post.” As a wise man once said — and poor Miley has learned — it takes many good deeds to build a reputation and only one bad one to tarnish it. Labor Day 2013: Celebrating the American worker By Jim Ridolphi, Contributing Columnist Labor Day evokes a myriad of memories for all of us, and the end of summer celebration has become a treasured American tradition. After observing most of our national holidays, it’s time to celebrate something to which all of us can relate: the importance of the American worker. Now I hear a lot these days about how Americans are entitled and have learned to expect something for nothing. That’s not the group of Americans I see lined up in traffic waiting to do the old 9 to 5 each morning I’m up and about. In economic times when it seems harder and harder to stay one step ahead of the bill collector, the American worker continues undaunted in his or her duties. They faithfully endure the indignities of early mornings and late evening, performing work — all of it important in the eyes of those who perform it. And not a day goes by that most of them don’t thank their lucky stars for the opportunity to support a family or raise a child. Nope, I don’t buy the notion that Americans are lazy and don’t

appreciate the value of a good day’s work. I believe in the value of all American workers, and I also appreciate the plight of the millions of our countrymen who cannot find suitable work. Their dignity is no less important than mine, and their will to work no less than yours. And, sure, like any society, there are freeloaders, but few would consider them winners in any stretch of the imagination. Living a life dependent on others is no day at the beach, I’m sure, and for the life of me, I can’t find those welfare Moms that are driving around in Cadillacs. I guess it’s obvious I’m a fan and supporter of the American worker and I would put their skills up against any worker on the planet, which brings me to a subject that seems especially timely at this time of year: the plight of the American farmer. I watched with interest the other night as an advertisement ran on television for a tried and true brand name of vegetables. “Our vegetables are farm-

raised,” the announcer said. In the world I used to know, most vegetables were farm-raised and the thought of any other venue for growing corn seems strangely foreign to me. But, the sad fact is America’s food system is becoming conglomerated and homogenized, produced in factory-like conditions in huge complexes that look nothing like the traditional farm. I’ve always believed the American farmer is this country’s last best defense against tyranny, invasion and destruction. When all else fails, this nation, thanks to its farmers, could always produce the food it needed to survive. A society dependent on huge corporations to supply the majority of its food lives in peril of economic downturns, profit margins and greed in times of trouble. We lose the American farm at our own risk. For the farmer, it’s more personal for they have established a relationship with something much more important than market trends and stockholder interests. It’s called good American dirt.

Preschool registration underway at Goochland Family YMCA Contributed Report

Registration is open for the Goochland Family YMCA Tender Tots preschool program for the 2013-2014 school year. The program serves children ages 3 to 5 years old. Full- and half-day schedules are available. Based on the Creative Curriculum, YMCA Preschool addresses social,

emotional, physical, cognitive and language development, embracing hands-on learning through play. Structured activities help children bond with peers and caring adults while they prepare for kindergarten. “YMCA Preschool is the foundation for academic learning for children in our community,” Sheila Knighton, associate director of child care, said. “Our program allows chil-

dren to explore their unique talents and interests, thus realizing their full potential. In addition to being prepared for kindergarten, children will be encouraged to be confident and independent learners.” For more information, or to register your child, visit the Goochland Family Y or call 804-556-9887. Club continued from > page 4 Marksmanship Program with money donated by a Cavalier Club member. The club meets each month on the second and third Sundays from February through October at Cavalier. Membership is limited to 30 club members, ranging in age from 9 to 18. Sixteen instructors help, after receiving training through 4-H, which — although it recognizes National Rifle Association certified trainers — requires them to also take a 4-H instructor class. Barrick said space at Cavalier and the need for instructors puts a limit on the number of club members. “Right now we have about 70 kids on our waiting list,” he said. “We can always use more instructors.” Next door to the rifle range 14-year old Anthony Dougherty was busting clay pigeons with a shotgun, under the watchful eye of instructor

James Maitland. A member for two years, Dougherty, said he wasn’t a shooter before joining the club. “It’s a pretty cool thing to do on the weekends,” said Dougherty, who said he was sticking to the shotgun for now. “I want to master the shotgun first,” he said. A different set of skills was in evidence on the archery range, where several archers were launching arrows from about 20 yards distance. Eleven-year-old Austin Payne explained archery’s appeal to him. “I like the difference,” he said, comparing archery to shooting a gun. “It’s about what you can do rather than the gun.” Rilie Bass, also 11, agreed. “With archery you use your whole body,” she said. The 4-H archers used bows with a peep sight on the string and some even had fiber optic sights on the front of the bow. Perhaps the liveliest range

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County was the advanced shotgun area, where about five shooters took aim at up to three clay pigeons in succession, coming from different angles. Lane Martin, 13, has been a club member for three years. On that particular Sunday he was shooting a 20 gauge Remington Model 1187 with some success. “It’s just fun,” said Martin. Clay Wilson, 17, of Rockville, was a little more talkative. “I joined because I enjoy shotgun shooting. The 4-H has taught me new skills and taught me to be safe,” said Wilson, who was shooting a Remington 12 gauge Model 870. At the end of the day’s shooting, Barrick reiterated the main lesson 4-H wants to teach. It’s all about ‘Mat,’” he said. “Safety is our chief goal.” To find out more about the club, contact 4-H Youth Development extension agent Jocelyn Dailey at 804-5565873.

Bring canned goods to Goochland football game vs. FUMA on Sept. 6 Contributed Report

The “Feed Goochland Club,” formed by Goochland High School juniors Matthew Ashley, Michael Nadder, Raleigh Marria and Carson Sylvester, plans to launch its second food donation drive to benefit the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS). Nadder said he “would greatly appreciate your participation in helping to feed the families of Goochland County”. On Friday, Sept. 6, a collection will take place at the Bulldogs’ first home varsity football game against Fork

Union Military Academy to help stock the shelves of the GFCFS Food Bank. The pantry is especially in need of peanut butter, canned fruit, vegetables, tuna and soup, macaroni and cheese and pasta. Upon admittance into the game, patrons will receive a raffle ticket for each non-perishable food item donated. These raffle tickets will be entered in a drawing to be held at half-time for an athletic pass ($85 value) to all regular season sporting events held at the school for the remainder of the school year. The more items donated, the better the odds of winning. Participants must be pres-

ent at half-time to win. If the raffle winner has already purchased an athletic pass, the $85 will be refunded to him or her. The club members said they hope for generous community participation at the game and wish everyone luck in winning a pass to Goochland High School athletic events.

Free GED, reading classes offered Contributed Report

Jorge Correa is one of Goochland Free Clinic and Family Service’s success stories. He came to the United States from Mexico in 1990. At only 15 years old, with a limited education, he could not speak English and his job skills were limited to cattle and horse farming. Never one to turn down a challenge, his life’s journey took him to parts of Arizona, Chicago and into Virginia, where he eventually settled down. Jorge worked at any job that would pay an honest wage. He did everything from picking apples to washing skyscraper windows 90 floors above Chicago’s busy streets. In Virginia, he went back to his roots and worked on a cattle farm, eventually rising to the position of manager. He became

a United States citizen. His spoken English became passable, but he had trouble reading and writing English. His job opportunities were limited. One day, Jorge’s wife saw a sign advertising Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’ free adult reading lessons. She signed up and tried to persuade Jorge to join her. Eventually he did and through the program, found tutor Mickey Wilson, who worked with him in his free time. As his skills improved, so did his self-confidence. Today, fulfilling a long held dream, Jorge is part owner of a thriving new restaurant. He and two partners recently opened Frida’s in Dillwyn. He is very handson with helping to manage the restaurant. He said, “With all the paper-

work I have to do for the restaurant, I would never have been able to do this without Mickey as my teacher.“ Two more of his goals are earning his GED and going to culinary school. Statistically, 14 percent of all adults in this country cannot read and 24 percent of all adults have not completed high school. In Goochland, 15 percent of our adult neighbors don’t have a high school diploma and 6 percent have less than a ninth grade educaiton. Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services offers both free reading lessons and free GED classes for adults. The reading lessons match one student with one tutor at a convenient time for the student once a week. The GED classes will resume

Bulldogs drop season opener to Essex By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland Coach Joe Fowler knew well beforehand that traveling to Tappahannock and taking on one of the state’s best teams in the season opener would not be an easy task. Starting eight sophomores and a freshman didn’t help either. “We knew they would be fired up for this one,” Fowler said as his team exited on the business end of a 42-28 thumping at the hands of Essex, the Bulldogs victim in last year’s state championship game in Salem. And if revenge is indeed sweet, the Trojans got an ample dose of it early and often against a porous Bulldog secondary that was ripe for the picking for junior quarterback Domenek Broaddus. “After a breakout season last year, he’s really become a good decision maker on the field for us. He was able to put the ball in the right guy’s hands, ran the ball well and took some hard shots out there tonight,” said Trojan coach Todd Jones. After Goochland took the opening kickoff and surrendered the ball on downs, the

Trojans returned the favor when the Bulldogs defense toughened on their 30-yard line. The Bulldogs opted not to punt on fourth down again, and the Trojans made them pay when they came short on fourth down. Senior DeAndre Baylor scored from three yards out to open the Trojan barrage with 1:01 remaining in the first period. Broaddus found Lathan Johnson for a 60-yard connection in the second quarter that gave the Trojans a 14-0 advantage when the teams broke for halftime. D.J. Ashlock gathered in a five yard strike from Broaddus to open the third quarter making the score 21-0. With a little over a minute to go in the third quarter, Goochland broke the ice when tailback Taivon Fox scored on a five-yard sweep. With ten minutes to go in the game, Goochland pulled as close as they would get on this evening when David Dyer scored from three yards out making it 21-14. On the ensuing drive, Broaddus found Ashlock who captured a tipped pass and fell

in the end zone. Sterling Hammond picked off a Reid Chenault pass with five minutes left in the contest and returned in for a score, but the Bulldogs responded with a Jaylen Allen kickoff return for a score. In the end, it was a scoring race Goochland could not win, and uncharacteristic mistakes and first game jitters did not

make the job any easier. Time ran out for the Bulldogs with the Trojans up 42-28. Fowler noted improvement as the game progressed, and said he saw some real potential in his troops. “I thought we played well at some points in the second half,” the coach said. “And if you’re looking for a great learning experience for a young team,

this was definitely it.” Coach Todd Jones said the win was not pretty at times, but he was satisfied with the improvement he saw in his team. “We stuck to our game plan and it worked pretty well,” Jones said. “We wanted to slow them down, and I thought we could pass on them better than we did last year, and it worked

out well.” Jones acknowledged the Trojans didn’t face a Bulldog squad at full strength. “They had a couple of key players out tonight,” Jones said. “But they showed the team that they are … hard to stop when they run right at you.” Jordan Jefferson missed the opener with an ankle sprain and there were other vacancies in the Bulldog secondary. But Fowler offered no excuses. “They beat us,” Fowler said. “We’ll go back and look at some things and come out ready to play against FUMA.” The state champs played with generic crimson helmets with the familiar striping and “big G” obviously absent. Asked if the team had earned the right to wear the extras, Fowler said, “Not yet. We never stripe them up until they earn it.” Jones’ troops celebrated as if they had won a state championship, but, in actuality, the win is meaningless in the VHSL ratings and does not affect the playoff picture. But, it didn’t feel that way to a happy group of Trojans who had just defeated the defending see Bulldogs >page 13

Cadets fall in soccer season debut By Jacob Downer Special Correspondent

Benedictine narrowly dropped its first soccer match of the season Friday, falling 4-3 to visitors from Norfolk Collegiate after a frantic second-half rally. Despite controlling the tempo and dominating possession for the majority of the game, the Cadets found themselves down 3-0 after just

18 minutes. The deficit was stretched to four goals just after halftime, setting the stage for a thrilling comeback attempt by Benedictine – one that they nearly were able to complete. “I loved the way our guys fought back today,” Benedictine head coach Ryan Hall said after the match. “You look up after 20 minutes and you’re already down 3-0, a lot of teams will just give up right there. Our team showed resilience and a

lot of heart today, and that is very promising to see from such a young group of guys.” From the start of the match, the Cadets were winning most of the 50/50 balls and had a definite edge in time of possession. However, Norfolk Collegiate used its speed on the outside and superior passing to successfully execute the few scoring opportunities they were presented with in the first half.

In the 10th minute, Oaks midfielder Michael Ortiz craftily dribbled his way through the Benedictine defense and drilled home a shot from 15 yards out to give Norfolk Collegiate a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Ortiz was on the offensive again, finding himself with an open Photo by Dave Lawrence look at the net following some Benedictine forward R.G. Benedictine, Collegiate face tough schedules

said. The coach considered Hamilton’s experience in that decision. “His knowledge and ability to manage our offense, along with familiarity with his weapons on the edge have earned him the spot. He is a very accurate passer, shifty runner, and has great pocket presence.” Lilly said. “However, we are very excited about Henry. He is learning quickly and has a big arm.” The Cadets will count on a solid defense that counts on speed and aggressiveness to

deliver a message. “Our defensive lineup looks as good if not better than it has in the past,” Lilly said. “We have five returning starters and have added speed in the defensive back backfield, and our defense looks much bigger, faster, and stronger than last season, specifically with the front four. After a positive off-season in the weight room for the Cadets, Lilly looks forward to this season. “As always, we set our goals and expectations high, “he said. “We want to win a state

championship, but understand it’s a week-to-week process. That’s why you push through the grind of summer camp and make sacrifices for and commit to your football family.” Collegiate Like Benedictine, Collegiate fields a team with a mix of experienced and new players. With an abundance of potential, the Cougars could have a banner season, but Palyo knows a tough schedule could be unforgiving. “There are no ‘breathers’ on the schedule and the team

will need to remain healthy in all positions to achieve a successful season,” Palyo said. “With only six returners on offense and five on defense, many new-to-varsity players will need to fill the shoes of those lost.” Collegiate begins with an experienced quarterback – senior Wilton Speight. A big quarterback with the ability to move out of the pocket, Speight is an accurate passer and proven leader. Coach Mark Palyo knows his team’s fortunes could depend on Speight’s performance. “Wilton Speight is in his senior season with the Cougars and will no doubt lead the offense,” Palyo said. “He has a big arm and great knowledge and leadership, and is working hard with the team to develop its offensive rhythm.” He’s also counting on his experienced players to fill key positions and anchor the Cougars’ offense and defense. Co captain Matthew Baum will anchor in the middle of the offensive line. “He’s the stabilizing force in the middle,” Palyo said. Kris Jain and Guido Scruggs will contribute in the secondary and in the receiving corps on offense.

Cadet defense, the ball fortuitously rolled right to Bianchi, who placed it into the goal with ease. The teams played the rest of the first half scoreless, and it remained 3-0 until seven minutes into the second half. Following a foul committed in the box by the Cadet defense, Oaks Senior Mark Howlett managed to successfully convert a penalty kick to increase his team’s lead to 4-0. Spirits could be expected to be low at this point in the game

for Benedictine; however, the Cadets rallied and the tide began to turn. Just over a minute after falling behind 4-0, Cadet forward R.G. Gordon used a counterattack to capitalize on a prime scoring opportunity, getting Benedictine on the board and bringing them back within three goals. The Cadets continued to build momentum following Gordon’s goal, as Matt Covallo drilled a goal from 25 yards out on a direct free kick to make

the score 4-2. Benedictine continued to take advantage of a visibly tired Norfolk Collegiate defense, scoring its third goal of the half in the 64th minute when Daniel Thompson saved a ball from going out of bounds and angled it into the goal all in one sliding motion. Thompson’s goal cut the deficit to 4-3 and set up an exhilarating final 15 minutes of the game, with Benedictine nearly tying the game up on several different occasions.

However, the Oaks defense was able to withstand the onslaught of late shots from the Cadets, and held on to win. Benedictine was without the services of captain and senior midfielder Zach Caudill, who missed the game due to a lower leg injury. “I accredit a lot of our struggles today to youth and first-game jitters. It’s early and we’re still learning, but this game gave us plenty to build off,” Hall said.

By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The football teams at Benedictine and Collegiate face brutal league schedules this year. The unrelenting schedule may bring challenges to squads rebuilding after losing key players to graduation. Benedictine head coach Greg Lilly is looking for leadership from his limited number of returners on this year’s Cadet team. “Some key offensive lineman graduated last year; however, some young Cadets have stepped up to fill those gaps,” Lilly said. The Cadets, who opened the season with a tough 4212 loss at McDonough School Saturday, face an unrelenting lineup of opponents. “The schedule is as difficult as ever,” Lilly said. “I can’t imagine anybody in central Virginia that has a more difficult schedule than us.” A summer quarterback duel yielded positive results for the Cadets, but last year’s starter, Bryce Hamilton, will take the opening snaps. “Bryce Hamilton and Henry Sullivan have competed for the starting position well; but Bryce has maintained his role as our starting QB,” Lilly

Soccer continued from >page 12 Oaks’ forwards. The junior nailed the ball past a diving Daniel Hennig for his second goal of the half, giving his squad a 2-0 advantage. Benedictine quarterback Bryce Hamilton, left, returns to run the Cadets’ offense this season. Hamilton faced a strong challenge this summer from Henry Sullivan, but Hamilton’s experience and athleticism helped him earn the starting nod.

The fifth captain, Strib Walker, adds an intangible element for the Cougars. “Walker brings high energy and enthusiasm to the team,” Palyo said. The coach is quick to point out those captains will depend on others to help lead the team. “It isn’t just the captains leading the team down the road to success,” Palyo said. “Reed Kellam is an impact player at linebacker along with David Romer on the line. The receiving core has the experience of Noah Dziedzic, William Norman, and Alexander Byrd returning as a few of Speight’s key targets.” On defense, the Cougars should be solid with top tackler Kellam, a first-team All-State selection, returning to lead the defense. Palyo expects the defense, with an experienced corps of linebackers and defensive backs, will play fast and aggressive. Will Allocca is one of a number of promising rookies that may make a huge contribution to the team. “There are many young players looking to have an impact on the team,” Palyo said. “Only time and game experience will tell how it all comes together.”

Bulldogs continued from >page 12 state champions. And the Bulldogs made the long drive back to Goochland anticipating a week of preparation for Fork Union Military Academy and the home opener this Friday at 7 p.m. “Nobody wants to lose, but we’ll be better off down the road for this,” Fowler said. “I’m proud of the effort these kids gave tonight.”
