That’s right, this fall Goochland County Parks and Rec will host the first ever Best Apple Pie in Goochland contest, offering local residents a chance to pit their pie-crust-rolling prowess against their neighbors’ (see below for more details). Make no mistake about it, Goochland High School student Mitchell Rosenbloom loves movies. So when last year, as an eighth grade student, he was presented with the chance to parlay his passion for cinema into a project for school, Rosenbloom jumped at the chance. The result was a project focused on helping those who suffer from a type of motion sickness while viewing things like 3D movies, an affliction officially dubbed “cyber sickness. The project, which involved creating a short video and interviewing experts in psychology and neuroscience, won Rosenbloom a first Mitchell Rosenbloom place state win in the Young Scientist Challenge Award, a national contest sponsored by Discovery Education. The contest, which Rosenbloom was allowed to enter in lieu of an eighth grade science project, asked students to identify and find a solution for an everyday problem related to “how we live, how we work or how we play. During the course of his research, Rosenbloom began to see Science > page 12

Luck Stone’s new loader an industry first Contributed Report
Luck Stone, the oldest division of Luck Companies, is launching several new initiatives and innovations to build on a customer-inspired foundation that is 90 years in the making. “The company takes pride in its reputation as a collaborative partner that unearths innovative solutions to help our customers be more successful,” said Bob Grauer, president of Luck Stone. According to Grauer, innovation can be defined as developing something completely new or just changing the experience that someone has with the business. To illustrate the former, Luck Stone collaborated with several partners, including experts from MIT, to develop a remote control loader to extract stone from the company’s Bull Run Plant in Chantilly. Luck Stone is the first company in the crushed stone and aggregate industry to have an

unmanned pit loader, which allows the company increased access to product reserves from deep within the quarry. “This tool gives us options that we’ve never had before and allows us to optimize resources at our plants while creating a more sustainable
environment,” said Grauer. Now in its third generation of leadership by the Luck family, the Richmond-based company is the largest familyowned and operated producer of crushed stone, sand and gravel in the U.S. Luck Stone has also harnessed the power of GIS technology to improve efficiency for daily load management with its subcontractor haulers. The company leveraged the expertise of its internal technology pros to design an app that can track vehicle locations, give directions for deliveries and place stone orders, among other features. Luck Stone distributed iPads with the Hauler App to approximately 250 haulers in Virginia and North Carolina, a leap of faith that the company was willing to take. “The haulers absolutely love it,” said Grauer. “It helps them make money by managing their business more effectively and that’s good for everyone.”
CORRECTION: In a Sept. 18 article on the county’s new memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, we incorrectly referred to the flight that was hijacked and brought down in a Pennsylvania field as American Airlines Flight 93. In fact, it was United Flight 93. We sincerely regret the error.

a few years, members of his department have been planning the event for about six months. “This is a first time event for us, Stamey said. “The staff has worked really hard, and we’re really excited to bring this event to the public. The happening will feature 23 different vendors that will offer information about a wide range of goods and services. Area professionals from non-profits and private companies such as American Red Cross, Curves of Goochland and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will talk about their offerings with attendees. “It is an opportunity for the entire family to come and learn about healthy living from experts, Rebekah Reynolds, program coordinator for athletics and wellness with Goochland County Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, said. Demonstrations will be conducted every 30 minutes between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Goochland Sports Complex Dance Studio. The Goochland YMCA
will do a Kid Fit demonstration at 11 a.m., New York Life Insurance will appear at 11:30 a.m., Liberty Mutual Insurance will share basic insurance tips at 12 noon, It Works Global will talk about its products at 12:30 p.m., and Royal Career Institute will be on hand at 1 p.m. And, representatives from Care Advantage will do blood pressure screenings, while HCA Virginia will do body mass index and blood sugar tests and cholesterol screenings. Youngsters won’t be overlooked during the expo, either, since a few vendors will sponsor activities that are just for kids. Reynolds said that Heaven Sent Child Care, LLC will provide face painting, Goochland Relay for Life will bring interactive games and New York Life will do child identification kits. Giveaways and raffles will also be a part of the proceedings. Raffles will start at 1:30 p.m., and as Reynolds explained, participants do not need to be present to win. Prizes up for grabs include two $25 Relay Foods gift cards,
five complimentary passes to Bogey’s Sports Park and one free week of after school care at the Goochland YMCA. And, parking shouldn’t be a problem, since shuttle service will be provided by the Goochland YMCA from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stamey said that the feature, which will depart from 1800 Dickinson Road every 15 to 20 minutes, was included to alleviate possible parking lot overflow. In any event, the Goochland Health and Fitness Expo should help the Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities to educate county residents about ways to achieve healthier lifestyles. “Well, I think it’s just part of our job and our mission statement, Stamey said. “It’s all about providing exposure to services in the community and to non-profits and private companies and bringing them together in a comprehensive way, Stamey said. The Benedictine Monks of Mary Mother of the Church Abbey will be hosting an open house on Oct. 19, offering county residents a chance to tour the abbey and get to know the men who call the property home. “The people of Goochland have been so warm and lovely — so welcoming, said Andrea Rieder, who is helping to organize the event. “The main aim of the program is to introduce the
monks to the community so people can get to know them, said Rieder. “They want to be good neighbors and to let residents know how happy they are to be a part of the Goochland community, she added. The school, founded in 1911, had been located on Sheppard Street in Richmond’s Fan District since its founding. After officially opening the new Benedictine High School in August, the group wasted little time making the place
feel like home. Father Adrian Harmening, O.S.B. recently celebrated mass on the football field for the entire school, an event Rieder describes as truly beautiful. The open house, which will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., will feature wine and finger food from local vendors as well as tours of the facility. The Mary Mother of the Church Benedictine Abbey is located at 12829 River Road in Goochland. For more information, e-mail abbeyinfo@ richmondmonks.org.

Respect essential between ‘been here’ and ‘come here’ groups By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In the interest of full disclosure, I think I should probably get this out in the open: if we have to divide area residents into two camps — those who have “been here” and those who have “come here” — I would fall into the latter category. I have been enjoying country life for the better part of 15 years now, but I still sometimes feel as though I straddle the two worlds, not quite fitting into either one. As a come-here, for example, I am of two minds when it comes to the ongoing debate over how best to keep one person’s animals — hunting dogs in particular — from infringing on another person’s property. In other places I have lived, debates like this have tended to pit natives and long-time residents against those who have recently moved in from somewhere else. It quickly becomes country vs. city, good vs. evil, poor vs. rich and so on. Rarely, of course, is it that simple. What you typically have, in my experience with other come-heres, are people who came to the country in search of a better, gentler way of life for themselves and their

Of course, as simple as it sounds, each side giving just a little — and by giving I mean respect as well as concession — would go a long way toward solving the problem. families. And very few arrive with the intent of ruining country living for everyone else. Likewise, most natives probably do understand why someone might not enjoy being sung to sleep every night by a pack of bluetick hounds. They simply want to preserve the right to continue to use their land as they see fit County leaders face an unenviable task when it comes to balancing the rights of those who prefer a more quietly pastoral setting with those of residents who’d like to continue enjoying the hobbies, like hunting, that they always have. Of course, as simple as it sounds, each side giving just a little — and by giving I mean respect as well as concession — would go a long way toward solving the problem. Respect, after all, is a two-way street — no matter where you live.

Letters to the Editor Conservation district from ‘Dust Bowl’ years Dear Editor, Soil and Water Conservation Districts — including Monacan, which serves Goochland County — came out of the “Dust Bowl” years. In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a letter to all governors asking them to pass legislation creating soil conservation districts for the purpose of assisting the Soil Conservation Service in getting landowners to combat soil erosion problems. Today the United States is blanketed with nearly 3,000 conservation districts with more than 8,000 district employees working at the local level on conservation issues. Monacan, which also serves Powhatan County farmers, was established in 1972 and is overseen by locally elected board members, who volunteer their time and serve without compensation. Monacan’s staff of three works on a part-time basis. Districts in the state are mandated to manage the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share Program (VACS) through a partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation. A ranking system within each district is used to determine the most efficient use of state funding for agricultural best management practices. Monacan promotes environmental education and programs as funding permits. Through the VACS program in the last three years, Monacan has been able to pay $563,000 directly to farmers for establishing soil and water con-
servation practices on local lands. Environmental improvements include more than 1,000 cattle fenced away from 92,735 feet of stream bank and 406 acres of buffer established for at least the next 10 years. In the last year, more than 2,700 acres of cropland were credited as notill and 2,900 acres were enrolled in nutrient management. Last year, Monacan partnered with Virginia Cooperative Extension on rain barrel workshops, resulting in 16 more barrels out in the community. To keep up with the many Monacan accomplishments, “Like” them on Facebook. Because of the work of Monacan and other districts, ground waters, creeks, streams and rivers are being kept clean. All citizens deserve access to health care Dear Editor, A recent anti-Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) television commercial sponsored by the ultra-conservative, Koch brotherssupported Americans for Prosperity organization features a woman named Trish trying to convince us that implementation of the ACA will ruin health care in America. She describes her experiences fighting cancer in a positive manner and believes that the United States health care system is “...the best in the world.” Her greatest fear appears to be that a government bureaucrat will dictate how she receives care.
It is easy to assume Trish was one of the fortunate Americans who could afford to buy private health insurance coverage or was already 65 and getting Medicare benefits. Without it, it’s highly doubtful she would be so positive about her experiences due to the heavy debt she would be burdened with after being treated for two types of cancer. Assuming her health care coverage is through either an HMO or PPO plan, she probably had to deal with pre-approvals from health insurance company bureaucrats and could only receive her care from in-network doctors and facilities. In addition, she obviously never read the World Health Organization’s latest statistics that show the United States ranks 37th in the world for overall quality of health care yet we spend about 2 1/2 times more on it than most developed countries in the world. This ad conveniently neglects to present those facts which would provide a much more realistic view of U.S. health care as it is today. For Trish to deny other, less fortunate Americans the ability to purchase the same level of health care she feels she received is beyond comprehension. People without health insurance often delay getting diagnosed and treated which decreases their chances of surviving serious diseases like Trish had. All citizens deserve access to affordable health insurance and care. The ACA will even the playing field for them. Whether it has an impact on increasing or decreasing the quality of that care remains to be seen, but we certainly deserve a chance to find out. Debra Markel Manakin Sabot

On a routine afternoon drive home from a roofing job in Charlottesville, Varina resident Dave Ludwig did something that has his friends, family and co-workers insisting he’s a hero. Ludwig, who is heavily involved in Boy Scout leadership in the Mechanicsville area, said he is dubious about the use of that word. As he sees it, it was instinct — not heroism — that led him to pull a young w o m a n from a car Ludwig accident just moments before her car erupted in flames. It was about 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, and Ludwig was driving home with two of his co-workers from Whitley Roofing and Sheet Metal when the car in front of them started to drift toward the left side of the road, correct course, then drift again. “Finally, it just started fishtailing in the grass near the Manakin overpass, Ludwig said. “It came back on the road, spun around

and slammed into the guardrail, front first. Ludwig slammed his brakes and stopped about 10 feet from the wrecked car, noticing in his rearview mirror that a tractor-trailer behind him barely managed to avoid hitting his vehicle. When Ludwig ran to the wrecked car, he found a slightly groggy college-aged woman behind the wheel. She wasn’t bleeding, he recalled, but she was confused. He told her to stay still, then
checked the back and passenger seats to make sure no one else needed help, and, finding them empty, turned his attention back to the driver. As he reached to help her with her seatbelt, he smelled something strange. “Fire was shooting out around my knees, Ludwig said. “I said, ‘We’ve got to get out of here, baby, come on!’ Ludwig helped the girl out of the car, and the two made it only a few steps away before the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. “Three to five seconds later and we would have been burnt. We could have been toasted, Ludwig said. That reality didn’t sink in until the ride home. On the scene, Ludwig said not much other than the issue at hand was on his mind as he talked with police, let the driver use his phone, then helped explain to her father what had happened.
He left the scene once she was safely in an ambulance, being carried away from the charred skeleton of her car. Ludwig called his wife to tell her what happened and a buddy who he was planning a Boy Scout trip with to tell him he’d be late. He then continued his afternoon. “By the time I got home, it was kind of really overwhelming with the phone calls and Facebook posts, Ludwig said. “And that ‘hero’ word. I think that’s a little strong. It’s just being a Good Samaritan. If it wasn’t me, someone else would do the same thing. Ray Alexander of Mechanicsville, who knows Ludwig through his scout work, would beg to differ. He has nominated Ludwig for a Boy Scout Lifesaving/ Meritorious Action award. Co-workers who have presee Rescue > 9

Goochland student part of world champion drum corps By Ken Odor Special Correspondent
“It’s the marching music majorleague,”saidGoochlander Scot Mitchell, 18, describing the Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions that are held each summer. A freshman majoring in music education at Virginia Commonwealth University, Mitchell ought to know, after his corps, Carolina Crown, won the DCI world championship last August in Indianapolis. He marched last year with the Jersey Surf Drum Corps last year along with three other Goochland High School students. This year he decided to audition for one of the top drum corps in DCI. Mitchell, who plays the trumpet, chose to try out for South Carolina based Carolina Crown group last spring and after being accepted started practice for the summer tour with three weeks of training at Gardner Webb University in North Carolina. Members practiced 12 hours a day, according to

After the accident, the girl’s father called Ludwig and asked him and his family to come to dinner so they could express their gratitude. Ludwig said he hopes to
Mitchell, former drum major at Goochland High School. “The whole thing is like complete physical training,” explained Mitchell, who compared playing in a marching band to “running while playing the instrument.” You’ve got to be in shape to do that and after the band members, numbering about 150 along with 30 or more staff, were ready, they starting touring the country, taking part in 35 competitions all across the nation, where they played at high schools and college stadiums. Mitchell said the corps’ program was based on “Einstein on the Beach,” an opera by Philip Glass. Being a member cost Mitchell about $3,500 but was well worth it, he said. In between performances the members had some time for sight seeing. Mitchell said he particularly enjoyed Las Vegas and San Francisco. “We saw the Golden Gate Bridge and a lot of cool stuff,” he said. Moving a group like Carolina Crown is no easy undertaking, Mitchell
explained. It took 10 vehicles to move all the band members, staff members and equipment from place to place. He started playing the trumpet in sixth grade, said he hopes to be a high school band director one day. “I like that stage of musical development,” said Mitchell. Trumpet playing runs in the family, it would seem. Mitchell started out using the same horn his mom, Kathy Mitchell, used when she was in the marching band at Liberty High School in Beckley, West Virginia. His older sister Sara, 20, now a nursing student at VCU, used it when she played at Goochland Middle School. Mitchell has his own trumpet now but used one supplied by Carolina Crown in the summer competitions. “Very surreal,” said Mitchell of how it felt to win the championship. His mom called it “the biggest moment of his life.” Whatever the feeling, Mitchell liked it enough to want to travel again next year with Carolina Crown and probably the next two years
stay in touch, and only agreed to speak with a reporter about the accident on the condition that the girl, who lost a lot of possessions in the fire, could remain unnamed. Her said she was simply exhausted from overdoing it at school and work, and doesn’t need any more stress. “I can’t imagine how he felt,” Ludwig said of the initial phone call to the girl’s father. “The realization — just three seconds. If she had had a kid or another passenger, we could be dead. It’s a car. It can be replaced. So can everything else.” But, Ludwig pointed out,
the life of your child can’t. That knowledge has bonded the two fathers. “I have a 24-year-old. I wondered if someone would stop and help him,” Ludwig said. Awards or no awards, attention and congratulations aside, Ludwig stressed that his actions aren’t remarkable. “A hero is the 18-, 19year-old boys in Afghanistan, the veteran who spent years in a war, the cop, the fireman. They’re heroes. I’m just the right guy at the right time. If it wasn’t me, it would have been somebody else.”
after that as well, until he “ages out” at 22. Mitchell’s parents are proud of what he has accomplished as a member of Carolina Crown. “I was just so proud he made it into Carolina Crown. That was a huge undertaking,” said Kathy. “I cried when they announced the winner.” “Scot really challenged himself,” said his father Rob. “Just trying to get into the top drum corps was a big challenge. We were both very proud of him when he made it and then when they won.”

One win over the line for Benedictine By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch
Much of what Alex Williams learned about football he learned from his grandfather. He was told about the great running backs, including Walter Payton and Jim Brown. Saturday, with the seconds ticking off the clock and the game on the line, the Benedictine running back remembered what his grandfather told him. “Just keep your legs running.” With a minute to go, Williams broke three tackles and muscled his way 27 yards to the 4-yard line. Three plays later, he scored the game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds left. Williams, a freshman running back, scored twice Saturday as Benedictine defeated St. Christopher’s 1410. The Cadets (2-3) led for only 30 seconds all day. But it was the right 30 seconds. Neither team scored in the first half. The Saints took a 7-0 lead in the third quarter when Giles Thompson completed a 9-yard pass to a leaping Garrett Taylor in the corner of the end zone. Benedictine tied it when Williams leaped over the pile, scoring from 2 yards out. When the Saints’ Thomas Cottrell kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2:03 left in the game, it looked as if St. Christopher’s (3-2) would pull out the win. But on the next drive, the Cadets tore down the field, going 61 yards in three plays. At 5-foot-6, Williams is the shortest player on the team. But on that 27-yard run to set up the touchdown, St. Christopher’s defense struggled to wrap their arms around Williams, who weighs

This time Williams went through the pile instead of over it. He reached the ball out with his left hand just enough to break the plane of the goal line. The ball was knocked out

Quick boost propels Bulldogs to road win By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
The outcome of a football game is sometimes changed in a matter of minutes. In other cases, it takes only seconds. That was the case in Goochland High School’s victory over Buckingham High School, 4113. The Bulldogs scored two touchdowns in 20 seconds to close out the first half of Friday’s contest with Buckingham, claiming a 21-13 intermission lead and changing the complexion of a game that found the homestanding Knights nursing a 13-7 lead as the final minutes of the half began to tick off. With a minute to go, Bulldog quarterback Reid Chenault hit Jaylen Allen with a 29-yard scoring pass that gave the Bulldogs a 14-13 lead. The Knights began a drive deep in their own territory, but were not content to run out the clock. Tyrell Hicks intercepted quarterback Leon Ragland, and Chenault quickly seized the scoring opportunity with a pass to Conner Saunders for 38 yards and a touchdown. Early in the third quarter, Ricky Gordon booted a 29-

yard field goal increasing the Bulldog lead to 24-13, but the Knights weren’t ready to surrender. They mounted a drive deep in to Goochland territory that ended when running back Peanut Johnson lost the ball as he struggled for extra yards against a stout Bulldog defense. The Knights then received the full dose of Bulldog football when the visitors mounted a 19-play drive that took eight
minutes off the clock and resulted in a 14 yard Raleigh Marria field goal. Jordan Jefferson picked off two passes in the fourth quarter and Chenault added a touchdown on the ground. The Bulldogs ended the night’s scoring the same way they started with a short run by David Dyer, his second touchdown of the evening. In between those touchdown runs, Dyer provided
the steady offensive effort that earned the tough yards when the bulldogs needed them. Midway through the season, the senior running back’s reliable ground game is becoming a signature of the still-evolving offense. “He’s a horse. We’ve got other kids who are more flashy, but he does the dirty work inside,” Fowler said. “He’s a real football player.” The 41-13 thumping didn’t
accurately indicate the competitive nature of the contest, and both coaches appreciated their teams’ levels of play. “Coach Gill is one of the finest coaches in the state and he runs a great program,” Fowler said. “To come in here and for our kids to play as well as they did at times makes us very happy.” Fowler said the team continues to improve and he saw periods when his team really gelled. He also noted lost opportunities. “We played well at times but we missed a lot of opportunities,” Fowler said. “We dropped maybe four touchdown passes in the first half.” While Fowler’s offense has received most of the headlines this season, the coach said it was the defense that gets the credit for this win. “The defense only gave up one touchdown,” Fowler said. “I thought our defense played well tonight. We worked really hard this week in practice.” Fowler said extra preparation by defensive coordinator Dan Summitt and excellent scout team preparation really made a difference in the game’s outcome. Fowler’s defense came up
with five turnovers, and Knights coach Craig Gill said that was more than enough to sink his team’s efforts. “The turnovers really hurt us, especially when we were trying to get back in to the game in the second half,” Gill said. The veteran coach applauded his team’s effort, but offered words that reinforce his philosophy on the game. “They say football builds character, but I say football shows character,” Gill said. “We didn’t show character when we gave up those two big plays right before the half.” In the final evaluation, Gill pointed to a simple reality that summed up Friday’s game. “They executed well on offense and we didn’t.” Goochland Buckingham

St. Catherine’s gets last-minute victory over Collegiate By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com
For many sports fans, there’s nothing better than watching two rivals slug it out until one gets the upper hand in the closing seconds of the game. For fans of the Collegiate School and St. Catherine’s School field hockey teams, that’s exactly what they got last Tuesday when St. Catherine’s
Sasha Walmsley took a pass from Ida Farinholt and drove it into the back of the Collegiate net with 55 seconds left in regulation to give the Saints a 2-1 victory over the visitors. “Collegiate-St. Catherine’s games are always competitive, very skillful,” said St. Catherine’s coach Don Warner. “I think on this field today we had six to eight, perhaps 10, Division I athletes – maybe not
all in hockey – but Division I athletes nonetheless. When you’ve got that many kids that are that athletic playing with and against each other, you’re going to have a fun game.” Collegiate took an early lead on a converted corner by Dodi Allocca, with an assist by Ana Yoo with 8:25 remaining in the first half. St. Catherine’s had plenty of chances to score in the first
half, but Collegiate keeper Campbell Brewer blocked the way. “We’d managed enough pressure to perhaps find a goal in the first half,” Warner said. “Campbell Brewer is an excellent keeper and she closed the door on us more than once. In the second half we managed to figure out a way to get it behind her. Brewer finished with 11
saves. The Cougars’ lead did not last long into the second half, though, as Farinholt scored an unassisted equalizer for St. Catherine’s with 26:03 remaining in regulation. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 until Walmsley’s go-ahead goal in the final minute. “It’s a high-pressure game, and it was really fun in that respect,” said Collegiate coach
Karen Doxey. “We played a great opponent who in a lot of ways really controlled the ball and really put a lot of pressure on it. … It was a fun game.” Collegiate St. Catherine’s

St. Catherine’s students catch the wind By Dave Lawrence sports@goochlandgazette.com
While most of the sailing world’s attention was focused on Oracle Team USA’s spectacular comeback to win the America’s Cup race last Wednesday, a small group of students from St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s schools gathered at Osborne Landing on the James River south of Richmond to do some sailing of their own – but it was not just for fun. The students are members of the two schools’ sailing teams. St. Catherine’s, with athletic facilities in Goochland, and St. Christopher’s are two of a handful of schools in the area with a sailing team, but they are far from the only schools in the state that compete in racing as a sport. A mix of private and public schools – most from the Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads and Chesapeake regions – participate in Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association-sanctioned events. In the past, sailing was a major part of the region’s economy. Now, it is seen as something of an oddity – many students at the St. Catherine’s, for example, are not aware of the team’s existence. “I actually didn’t know there was a Saints’ team until I got to high school,” said Alex Tolleson, one of St. Catherine’s team captains. “I actually played field hockey for one year during the fall season, so I wasn’t able to [sail] my freshman year. But I gave up on that and switched to sailing.” Tolleson caught the sailing bug at a summer camp – a fairly common way for team members to discover the sport. “When I was 7 I went to

one camp and sailed Optis, which are like floating bathtubs for little kids,” said Ryan Hodgson, another one of St. Catherine’s team captains. The floating bathtub experience did not curb Hodgson’s
enthusiasm. The following year she went to a sailing camp and has kept sailing since. New team member Lilli Cooper’s first sailing experiences were more familial. The recent transplant from Indiana
spent a lot of time at her grandparents’ home on Lake Wawasee in the northern part of the state. “I would spend my summers up there,” Cooper said. “We had always had sailboats.
My dad would go out and my grandpa would go out and I was always invited to go along with them. At first it was very scary, with all the waves, and being scared to tip over and stuff, but I began to adjust.” Soon she was going to sailing camps, too. “I absolutely loved it,” Cooper said. Unlike most sports that run on massive infusions of adrenaline, sailing can inspire a significant amount of serenity. “It’s a calm sport,” Hodgson said. “You kind of can get in
your own zone and focus on what your own boat is doing and how you’re going to get around.” But the team members know that life on the water has its moments. “Last week we had a small watercraft advisory due to how windy it was,” Cooper said. “Many people see it as a very laid-back sport, but when the conditions are rough, the sport is quite intense.” St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s have separate teams, but they share coaches – Mike Karn and Ted Quinn – boats and practice facilities. Both have a family tradition of sailing. Quinn’s grandfather, David Stanfield, got into sailing in Virginia via the Boy Scouts in the 1930s – they sailed canoes jury-rigged with a mast. When Stanfield’s family moved to Baltimore, Stanfield, now 90, joined a Sea Scout troop that refurbished an abandoned skipjack – even finding a new mast to replace the missing spar – and sailed it on the Chesapeake. Sailing is still a part of Stanfield’s life. He and Quinn went sailing together in May. Even though team members like Cooper have seven decades to go to catch up to Stanfield’s age, many plan, like him, to keep sailing as a part of their lives. Tolleson, for example, checks to see whether prospective colleges have sailing teams. Whether or not Cooper continues to compete, she expects to continue her family’s sailing tradition. “It’s always been something that I know I will do for the rest of my life, that I will want to bring into my children’s lives.” Cooper said. “With my family, it’s something we all enjoy to do.”

Goochland schools receive $50,000 grant to study impact of year-round school Contributed Report
The Goochland County Public Schools have received $50,000 in grant funding to be used in planning for a pilot year-round school initiative at Randolph Elementary School. The division will begin immediately recruiting an extraordinary educator to study the feasibility of the pilot program and TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
to make recommendations to the board regarding potential implementation. The intended program will follow the “school-within-aschool” model and will serve one Kindergarten and one First Grade classroom. “It’s important to understand that no parents will be required to enroll their children in the program. If feasible, all parents will have the
opportunity to explore it and select this if they see it as a good fit for their child,” explained superintendent Dr. James Lane. Students who participate in the year-round pilot would likely start in mid-July 2014 and attend class-
