County has new outdoor event space
Goochland residents hit the polls
CarMax Cares Stage boasts river view, faces 36,000 square feet of seating capacity Contributed Report
Goochland County has its first outdoor stage. The CarMax Cares Stage at Tucker Park, built with a grant awarded to the Friends of Goochland Parks from The CarMax Foundation, was officially dedicated Tuesday, Oct. 29. The 50 ft. reinforced concrete slab stage is located approximately 100 feet from the riverbank, and features the CarMax Cares logo. It will serve as a venue for the park’s special events and faces 36,000 square feet of spectator seating in the amphitheater area of the site. “Having a performance space for groups to entertain visitors was an important element in the original vision designed for Tucker Park,” said Beth Moore, President of the Friends of Goochland Parks Board of Directors. “We were so fortunate to receive see Stage > page 3

Presentation to shed new light on Jamestown settlement By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Most Virginia history buffs know all about Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. But an upcoming presentation at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College may offer details often left out of the history books.
Dr. William Kelso, the worldrenowned archeologist who discovered the ruins of Jamestown Fort, will make his presentation in the Lipman Auditorium of the Massey Library and Technology Center on the college’s Parham Road Campus at 5 p.m. on Nov. 13. The presentation will focus on Kelso’s field work and recent discov-
eries about cannibalism that occurred in the 1600s at Jamestown. “Cannibalism probably occurred out of survival necessity during the ‘Starving Time’ of 1609-1610 when colonists were under siege by local Indians and food was scarce,” explained Richard Groover, Reynolds Assistant Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, who
arranged for Kelso to speak at the college. Kelso has a Ph.D. in historical archaeology from Emory University and is currently Director of Archaeological Research and Interpretation for Jamestown Rediscovery. “I have known of Bill Kelso’s work for over 15 years,” said Groover.
“When I heard of his recent work and evidence of cannibalism at Jamestown, I thought this would be a great presentation for audiences in the Richmond area. Concerning the subject matter, Groover said he doesn’t think it will prove too much for those interested see Jamestown > page 2

Jury recommends 16 years for man convicted of beating teacher From staff reports
When all was said and done, the man charged with brutally attacking a Goochland County teacher didn’t have to wait long to learn his fate. In fact, it took a jury less than 10 Harris minutes last Thursday to find Uriah Harris, 30, guilty of maliciously wounding his former girlfriend on Dec. 5, 2012 and leaving her battered and unconscious in the parking lot of the school where she worked.

in attending the talk. “The average public is exposed to lots of gruesome facts that occur today,” said Groover, adding that he hopes
Harris, who served as his own attorney, will be formally sentenced in January. The jury of eight women and four men recommended a 16-year sentence, though Harris could be given as many as 20. Judge Timothy K. Sanner, who presided over the trial in Goochland County Circuit Court, can reduce the jury’s recommendation but not increase it. The trial brought an end to a story that had shaken the Goochland community. The victim (whose family asked that she not be identified) testified in court that she and Harris had broken up after being in a relationship for several years,
but that the two had continued to share an apartment. As their relationship spiraled into one of violence and abuse, she said, she took out protective orders against Harris and brought an assault charge against him. Harris retaliated by trashing the apartment, stealing a gun and leaving a note scrawled on the wall: “You did this.” He left a knife embedded in the wall. The victim testified during the trial that she still suffers from bouts of vertigo and memory loss due the attack, though she has been able to return to her job. The Richmond TimesDispatch’s Bill McKelway contributed to this report
Kelso’s work helps fill in the holes in many people’s view of the region’s history. “I hope our students and the audience will learn a more complete history of early Virginia,” said Groover. “As a science professor, I think the
viewers will learn a little about science investigations in the field of archaeology.” This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Richard Groover at rgroover@reynolds. edu or (804) 523-5594.

As homecoming queens go, D’aujahnae Anderson, 17, is not what one would describe as “flashy. In fact, the Goochland High School senior admits she has worn the tiara she was awarded just twice: on Oct. 18, the night Goochland defeated Nottoway 35-14 in the homecoming football game, and one other time—at Hardees. “I just had it in the back of my car and I felt like wearing it, said Anderson of her royal snack stop. And if anyone in the restaurant was surprised to see a young woman with a crown glide up to the counter, she said, they didn’t let on. Anderson, who also plays center on the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team, seems similarly unfazed by her win. While she said she was shocked to hear her name announced as the new queen during the homecoming game—“I couldn’t believe it, she said – little has changed since. She still lists English as her favorite subject in school and still plans on pursuing criminal justice after she graduates, with an eye toward becoming a police officer. The daughter of Dericka Anderson and Maurice Fountain, Anderson hopes to work in investigations someday, preferably in the city. As for what people might be surprised to know about Photo by Jim Ridolphi her (we have always had a fascination with royalty, after Goochland Homecoming Queen D’aujahnae Anderson, shown all) Anderson just laughed. “There really isn’t anything, she said. “I’m pretty here with Homecoming King Richard Johnson, describes herself as “pretty much an open book. much an open book.

For us Southerners, love is in the lingo By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Tell me this: Do you speak Southern? Do you tend to drop the last few letters of some words and add syllables to others? Do you use the words “fixin’ ” or “reckon”? Have you uttered the phrase “Bless your heart” at least once today? If so, do I have some good news for you. In a recent survey by the dating site Cupid.com, the Southern accent beat out all other regional accents to be named The Most Attractive Accent in America (coming in way ahead of the second place finishing New York accent and pummeling the MidAtlantic accent, which came in dead last.) After living in the Commonwealth most of my life, far too many Southernisms pepper my speech to ever be able to deny the place I call home. If I don’t quiet have what you would call a drawl, the way I sound is at least “drawl-y.” Unfortunately — and I’m sure I am not revealing any state secrets here — the Southern accent has not always been treated with tremendous respect in popular media. Putting it plainly — as we Southern gals like to do

— movies and television often use the dialect as shorthand for unsophisticated . . . or worse. Of course, a survey like the one I mention here doesn’t make any distinction between the dozens and dozens of variations on the Southern accent, from the soft drawl of Central Virginia to the French-inflected lilt of rural Louisiana. But that’s OK. They are all beautiful in their own right, and all apparently more appreciated than many of us
Putting it plainly — as we Southern gals like to do — movies and television often use the dialect as shorthand for unsophisticated . . . or worse. may have realized. So, if you’re Southern and you sound it, take a moment today to savor your spot on the top rung of love’s linguistic ladder. And, to our friends in other parts of the country who have occasionally enjoyed a joke or two at our expense, hope ya’ll are enjoying that crow you’re fixin’ to eat! Bless your hearts.

Halloween sometimes takes on a different look in rural Goochland. County resident Robbie Bridges sent us this shot of two trick or treaters who showed up to his home on horseback.
Letters to the Editor Veterans Day speaker is true American hero Dear Editor, American Legion Post 215 and Goochland High School will host Goochland’s Veterans Day 2013 Ceremony at the High School auditorium at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11. A primary mission of the American Legion is to promote Americanism, that is, what it means to be an American and the obligations we owe this great land. Veterans of our Armed Forces, and those who serve America today, know the values and virtues of the nation they serve. They also know the sacrifice required to sustain our freedom in the greatest experiment and success in human history, the United States of America. To make these sacrifices that we ask of the Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, they are trained about duty, honor and commitment. Our guest of honor for this Veterans Day knows sacrifice as well as any member of America’s military services, except for those who never came home and who made
the supreme sacrifice. Commander George Coker is the very definition and an exemplary role model of service, courage and Americanism. A native Texan, now living in Virginia Beach, he is a Distinguished Eagle Scout and he and his wife Pam have devoted 30 years to scouting. He was a state wrestling champion and varsity football player throughout High School. He attended Rutgers University where he was a varsity wrestler and became a Navy Officer who trained and qualified in aviation. In 1966, while serving as a navigator-bombardier in an A-6 aircraft over North Vietnam, he and his pilot were shot down and captured. He and his cellmate are the only POWs known to have escaped from the Hanoi Hilton. He was recaptured, spending 2-1/2 years in solitary confinement with ongoing beatings and torture. He became an inspiration to his fellow POW’s and for his heroism and leadership, was awarded the Navy Cross, the Nation’s second highest award for extraordinary valor. He also was awarded the, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, Distinguished Flying Cross,
two Purple Hearts and many other personal decorations. After retirement from the Navy, he provided aviation support to our Armed Forces Special Operations Forces until 2002. He and wife Pam continue to be involved in Scouting, and provide support to the National POW Organization, and they counsel young married couples, and church ministries. He is a most informative, motivating and appropriate speaker as this year is the 40th anniversary of the repatriation of Americas 591 Vietnam POWs. Please join us at GHS at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Joe Wadle Manakin-Sabot

people who park in the Fire Lanes at the Food Lion shopping center. They park right in front of the store and in the white crossed lanes beside the handicapped spaces. I was almost hit today, because I could not see to make a turn past one of the vehicles that was parked there. They sometimes go all the way down to the pizza place. Is there anything we, as citizens, can do about this? I have also seen handicapped people not able to get out of their cars because these people parked in the crossed out spots right beside them. It is getting ridiculous and needs to stop. It is unfair to the people who need the open space to open their car doors to get out. It is also unfair to those people who are trying to make a turn and can’t see past them. They are also parking in a fire lane so God help them if a fire breaks out. The fire marshal, at the very least, needs to start watching this. It is causing an unsafe environment for everyone involved. Susan Schwartz Goochland
watch my local government in action. The Board has recently started a practice that does not appear to be citizen-friendly. On the agenda there is a time for citizens to comment on any issue that is of concern to their quality of life in Goochland. It has always been a time of interest for those of us attending the meeting because any one who took the time to speak to the Board could be heard. Citizens are now only allowed to be heard for three minutes. Yes, that practice is reasonable for a Public Hearing, where many people are commenting on the same topic. However, this time on the agenda is for citizens to let Supervisors hear their problems. I have never in 17 years seen this time abused. This policy needs a rethink. We have enough people in Washington who aren’t interested in listening to the voice of the people. We don’t need that attitude in Goochland. St. Catherine’s Saints volleyball wins its second straight LIS title Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

Pinned to the observation area that runs around the perimeter the volleyball court at St. Catherine’s School is a yellow banner that lists all the LIS championships the Saints’ volleyball team has captured in its history. The first came all the way back in 1990, followed by a 20-year drought before their second in 2010. Since then, however, the Saints have been making up for all of that lost time in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. They’ve won three of the last four LIS championships, including the last two over Trinity Episcopal. In 2012, St. Catherine’s let Trinity Episcopal School eke out a victory in one of the four sets. This year, they offered the visitors no such hope, sweeping the Titans in three consecutive sets - 25-22, 25-11 and 25-13 – before being mobbed by an elated student section after securing match point. “The crowd was outstanding,” said St. Catherine’s head coach Anna Prillaman. “They really helped create an exciting atmosphere and stood behind our girls in all three sets.” The initial set – which saw Trinity Episcopal force five set points before finally falling by three points – was the only one in which the visiting Titans were ever in striking distance of upsetting the Saints. Over the final two sets, St. Catherine’s proved that their sparkling 19-3 record was no fluke, outscoring Trinity Episcopal by a combined score of 50-24 to capture the championship. St. Catherine’s stand-out players included sophomore Sam Conway, who tallied a match-high 19 kills, and junior Mady Arles, who compiled 31 assists. To reach their third LIS championship match in four years, the Saints first had to knock off Collegiate, a school whose home court is less than five miles from St. Catherine’s campus at the intersection of Three Chopt and Grove. The Saints were almost as dominant, if

TRACK Bulldogs’ train-like offense rips Prince Edward for 550 yards on the ground to grab 52-22 win Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Although last week’s contest with Prince Edward High School was the last home game on Goochland High School’s regular season schedule, the Bulldogs have every intention of a triumphant return to their home turf. “You have to win to come
back here and play on this field. We take care of business and this won’t be the last time you play on this field,” coach Joe Fowler told his troops following a 52-22 walloping of the Eagles. With one game remaining on the road at Amelia, the Bulldogs are hoping a win will put them at home in the first round of the playoffs.
Last week’s win coupled with Lunenburg’s loss are making those chances look better. A determined group of visiting Eagles tested the Bulldogs early, but succumbed to a ground-based attack that seems to be running a full throttle as the playoffs approach. Prince Edward defenders couldn’t catch up with a signature Bulldog offensive explosion that featured three running backs who each gained more than 100 yards in a 550yard plus team rushing performance. Workhorse David Dyer got the bulk of the yardage with 181 yards on 19 carries including two touchdowns, but Conner Saunders and Jaylen Allen also did their part with 101 and 121 yards respectively. Allen credited the offensive line with the impressive rushing statistics. “They made it possible for me to do what I did tonight. see Goochland > page 9
This past spring, Mike Sims, the father of Cherish Sims, a Goochland Middle School student and Goochland Youth Athletic Association softball player, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the young age of 41. Sims was (and still is) highly involved within the GYAA community, and his diagnosis was absolutely heartbreaking for everyone involved in the softball community. Sims went through his first round of chemotherapy while his daughter was competing with the GYAA All-Star team this past summer. Yet he refused to let the treatments keep him down. Undeterred, Mr. Sims attended every tournament game and helped out wherever and whenever he was needed. Simply put, he refused to let the illness break his spirit. The GYAA was excited and humbled to team up with Kerri Cobb of All-American Softball to put on the First Annual Homerun Derby for the Benefit the Sims Family on Friday, Oct. 25. We would like to thank everyone who participated, donated, volunteered, and helped the event run swimmingly. The derby was a riveting success that raised money for an honorable and steadfast man who refuses to let the unfair hand that he has been dealt from getting the best of him.

Volleyball continued from > page 8 not more dominant, in their match against the Cougars as they were against Trinity Episcopal in the LIS championship. A quick point-by-point rundown proves that the Saints are far from a one-woman show. While it’s true that Conway and Arles are the team’s “big hitters,” the ones who can really lay the hammer down when St. Catherine’s finds itself in need of a quick point, the Saints generally shun a star-centric approach for a more democratic, team-oriented philosophy. For evidence, let’s look at how St. Catherine’s ended the third and final set against Collegiate. Four girls – senior Alaina Wibberly, freshman Rachel Daniel, senior Caroline Naumann, and Conway – combined to score the last five points of the match to send the Saints to the
championship. Now that’s teamwork. With LIS play now in its rearview mirror, the girls of St. Catherine’s will turn their attention to the state tournament. Their first game took place last evening, Wednesday, Oct.6, against Cape Henry at Collegiate School. If they were victorious in that match, they will continue their quest for a state championship in the semifinal match this Friday evening. The championship game is set for Saturday, Oct. 9. Goochland continued from > page 8 I give them all the credit,” he said after the game. “We just kept working hard out there tonight.” After trading first quarter touchdowns, Dyer hit pay dirt early in the second period on a 10-yard run, and Connor Saunders added another score when he gathered in a 37-yard pass from Goochland quarterback Jordan Jefferson. The 21-7 lead didn’t hold as Eagles quarterback Cleon Watkins completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Darkeem Gray with two minutes remaining in the half. Taivon Fox answered that score when he scampered 14 yards around end to give the Bulldogs a 27-14 lead. Ricky Gordon kicked a 43yard field goal in the third quarter, but Gray struck again on the ensuing kickoff with an 88-yard return to the end zone. For a brief moment, it seemed the Eagles were back in the game at 30-22. Goochland quickly dispelled those hopes and closed the deal with three rushing touchdowns by Allen, Fox and Markell Cooley making the final 52-22. Fowler said the rushing performance was especially impressive considering the number of starters who are injured, many of them out for the season. “We’re beat up. We lost another starting running back
9
last week, so these guys carried the load tonight,” Fowler said. “David did his usual damage up the middle and softened them up to open up the outside runs for other backs,” he added. With Amelia looming as the Bulldog’s last obstacle on the regular season schedule, it’s hard not to think about the playoffs, especially for seniors like Allen. “We have amazing chemistry on this team. We can go out a winner if we put our minds to it. I really want to play on this field again.” Fowler is more pragmatic regarding his thoughts on the next couple of weeks. “We still need to get better.” G — Dyer 4 run (Marria kick) PE — Watkins 2 run (Burke kick) G — Dyer 10 run (Marria kick) G — Saunders 37 pass from Jefferson (Marria kick) PE — Gray 47 pass from Watkins (Burke kick) G — Fox 14 run (kick blocked) G — FG Gordon 43 PE — Gray 88 kickoff return (Watkins pass from Wardell) G — Allen 15 run (Dyer run) G — Fox 4 run (Marria kick) G — Cooley 1 run (Marria kick)
