‘Try to make this world a better place’ Retired U. S. Navy Commander George Coker challenged students in the audience at Monday’s Veterans Day Ceremony at Goochland High School to make a difference. Coker, who spent six and a half years as a prisoner after being shot down in 1966 during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Navy Cross, talked about what it means to be a veteran, stressing service to country and responsibility for one’s actions. He lamented the current state of affairs in Washington, D.C., where he said neither the president nor U.S. Congress would take responsibility for their failings. “My plea to you -- I beg of you,” Coker said at the end of his address. “Try to do a little something to make this a better place.” For more photos from the ceremony, visit www.goochlandgazette.com. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps orientation tonight By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland High School will be hosting an orientation at 7 p.m. tonight to introduce students and their parents to the new Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program that will launch next year.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the new Marine instructors and participate in a question and answer session. The session is designed to give students, parents , and community members the opportunity to hear about what being a cadet in a MCJROTC program entails, including basic expectations, time com-
mitments and expenses. “As this is a new program, it is important for all parties to hear the correct information that only the Marine instructors can provide,” said Bruce Watson, director of Career and Technical Education for Goochland County Schools. “This is only an infor-
Supervisors: Noise ordinance needs more work Leaders say focus must be on constitutionality, simplicity By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Citing the fact that the recent revision of the county noise ordinance became “overly complex, and overly intrusive,” the Goochland County Board of Supervisors decided during their monthly meeting on Nov. 6 to cancel a scheduled public hearing on the changes and study the issue further. “We have received a lot of citizen feedback on this issue, and we want to give that time to work its way into the system,” board chairman Ken Peterson told the standing-roomPeterson only crowd. Their goal from the beginning has been to address the constitutionality of the ordinance and to provide a redress for those who are negatively impacted by unreasonable noise, Peterson said. They are also seeking to decriminalize noise infractions and to simplify the ordinance itself. While the board members decided no formal action would take place that night, they acknowledged see Noise > page 4

Free Clinic and Family Services hosts annual ‘Bridges’ breakfast By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Sharing her story during the annual Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Building Bridges of Hope breakfast on Nov. 6, Angie Ruff recalled a time in her life when she wasn’t sure if she would be able to keep going. In front of the capacity crowd at Goochland’s Hope Church, Ruff described the days after she had fled an abusive marriage, taking her four children to live with her brother in a house illsuited to handle both families. She had lost her car and her job, and found herself struggling to make it through each day. “We literally had no idea where we would go or what we would do,” Ruff said, but then she was advised to visit GFCFS. Though she assumed she would be offered some kind of assistance from the organization, Ruff said, she figured she would be treated as little more than a number. When she arrived at GFCFS however, Ruff said, “I have never been so happy to be so disappointed.” These days, Ruff said, she is one of the organization’s success stories. She is able to care for her children and herself and envision a future far different than the one she once thought would be hers. According to GFCFS presidentKeith Reynolds, Ruff’s story is one of so many that make up the recent history of GFCFS. “We measure success by
the number of people we help,” Reynolds said,” and right now we are helping more people than ever in our history.” Over breakfast, guests were treated to more success stories: a family who received emergency housing assistance; a single father who was finally offered help for the heart problem that was slowly taking his life; and a woman who now has a warm home and working plumbing after GFCFS came to her aid. After a performance from Goochland’s own Berchtold Family Singers, GFCFS Executive Director Sally Graham shared the story of the organizaton’s founding. “The perfect world I dreamed of was a onestop shop,” Graham said. “And 13 years later we are living that dream.” While services were once scattered, Graham said, now a resident in crisis is provided with a needs assessment and offered immediate access to medical and dental care, or food assistancee There are still challenges to be met, Graham said, including solving a space shortage that impacts both the food pantry and the Free Clinic’s ability to serve residents. Despite these ongoing issues, Graham said she and the rest of the GFCFS family cannot imagine giving up on their mission. “We are so glad to be part on this community,” Graham said, “and we want you to share our dream.”

that those in attendance could still comment on the issue during the scheduled public comment period. And comment they did. Doug Deets took issue with what he described as an oversimplification of the previous ordinance. “In simplifying this, you have left it wide open,” Deets said. “Nobody knows what’s allowed. Maybe it’s a rooster crowing. Maybe a gun’s going off. Maybe it’s mud bogging — God forbid. But we need something black and white: this is what you can do, this is what you can’t do—we’ve got to know.”

board to consider people who bought property in Goochland specifically for their businesses. “There has to be something that grandfathers in people like me—and I’m sure there are lots of people like me,” Friedman said. “I don’t want to be left out with nothing and be stuck with a house that is useless to me.” Though they acknowledged that more study was needed, several board members stressed the need to reach a resolution as soon as possible. “We’ve got a problem to solve and we’ve been wrestling with it for a while,” District 4 supervisor Robert Minnick said. “I still feel some urgency and I want to get this resolved, but I also want to get it right for all parties involved.”

Deets, who received a rousing round of applause after his comments, clearly wasn’t alone in his opposition to the proposed changes. Again and again, residents approached the microphone to share their concerns. “It looks to me like you are trying to impose city rules on people who live in the country — and we’re not in the city,” Will Lipcsey told the board. “That’s why we moved here.” Some had concerns about the infringement on their rights to own hunting dogs while others, including several dog breeders, told the board that the new ordinance, if enforced as written, could potentially put them out of business. County resource deserves our praise By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Growing up in a solidly middle class, devoutly religious home, my younger sister and I were often reminded not to forget about Those Less Fortunate. Who were Those Less Fortunate? They were the ones who got our cast-off sneakers and outgrown bicycles. They were the people we prayed for on Sunday and the reason we had to finish what was on our plates (someone was starving in Africa, or maybe China, we were told as kids, and would have given anything for those beets we were scowling at.) Unfortunately, we never gave much thought to exactly who Those Less Fortunate really were, what sad twist of fate had knocked them down, or what role we could play in helping them climb out of poverty. And, for many of us, even as adults, this is still the norm. Sure, we might give away our old things or make annual donations — which are certainly admirable, please don’t get me wrong — but we don’t roll up our sleeves and try to figure out why some of us float along just fine while others barely get by. Thankfully, the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services does. Working largely outside the

To save thousands, as GFCFS has done — without government funding -- is nothing short of miraculous. As the holidays approach and we consider what (and who) we are thankful for, the people and programs at GFCFS will surely top many people’s lists. They are a shining example of what it means to be our brother’s keeper, and we sincerely thank them for their service to Goochland County.

Letter to the Editor Election volunteers deserve appreciation Dear Editor, With the general election now over, citizens across The Commonwealth have reason to be proud of the results — but none more so than in Goochland. While statewide turnout is reported to be 41.2%, the voters in Goochland County led the way with 60.06% of active voters casting ballots! The operation of our polling places went smoothly: a tribute to the extraordinary goodwill, discipline, integrity and devotion of our Officers of Election who put in a 16 to 18-hour day to ensure our voting was fair, open, transparent and successful. We are especially grateful to the congregation of Grace Chinese Baptist Church who offered the use of their superb new education wing for our new Shallow Well Precinct; and to VDOT for providing illuminated signs on Rt. 250 to alert drivers and keep voters safe. OBITUARIES: Death Notices
November 14, 2013
Robert McCracken McCRACKEN, Robert Scott “Scotty” III, 80, died peacefully November 2, 2013. Born January, 27, 1933 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Robert Scott McCracken Jr. and Lee Marscher Scheper McCracken. He graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., as well as a postgraduate year from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. From college, he proudly served in the United States Navy. Scotty was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Roberts McCracken; and brother, Henry Sledge McCracken. Anne, who died too young, left him with four children to raise on his own; this was his greatest achieve-
ment. Scotty had a deep passion for building and architecture, and spent most of his working career as a custom homebuilder. He shared this passion with all of his children, taking them on annual trips to visit historic houses throughout the Virginia countryside. Early in his building career, he introduced residential post-and-beam construction in the Richmond area and Wintergreen. As a resident of Goochland County, Scotty had a sincere concern for its proper development. He was appointed and served two terms on the Goochland Planning Commission. He was a voracious reader and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Over his lifetime, Scotty acquired quite a substantial library and the passionate belief that reading is fundamental to all learning. He is survived by his four children, Anne Latham McCracken Rogers (Jimmy), Robert Scott see Notices > page 16

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Richmond Symphony to play Goochland High on Sunday Classical musical sounds will bring thoughts of autumn to mind when the Goochland Rotary Club hosts the Richmond Symphony during its seventh annual benefit concert. The event will get underway at Goochland High School at 3250 River Road in Goochland at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Jim Barton is the chairman of the Richmond Symphony concert committee. Barton explained the Goochland Rotary Club’s objectives. “The club’s aim is to support charitable organizations within the community and educational activities,” Barton said. “And, on an international basis, the Rotary Club’s goal is to do goodwill and outreach with special programs like stamping out polio worldwide.” “Internationally, we also gave donations to areas in Africa where we were paying for wells that were dug to provide fresh water for the people who lived there,” Barton added. The Goochland Rotary Club meets at Richmond Country Club at 12950 Patterson Ave. in Richmond at 7:30 a.m. every Friday. Barton said that people who are interested in joining must be sponsored by a current member.
Orientation continued from > page 1 mation session so there is not a commitment to sign up for the program if the student attends,” said Watson. While students may choose to enter the military as a career
At any rate, Sunday afternoon’s concert ensures that local residents will get the chance to hear the Richmond Symphony perform its memorable catalog of music without having to make a trip to downtown Richmond. And, the concert’s theme “Fall Into the Holidays” references a unique playlist that includes songs that are typically played around the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays. Tunes that will be played include George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” and “Hallelujah Chorus.” “We wanted to bring that experience local so that more people can attend,” Barton said. “Some would say that $20 per ticket isn’t affordable, but it’s a much lower price than it is to see a performance downtown.” As previously stated, the performance isn’t just an opportunity to bring classical music to Goochland, but it is also a charitable endeavor. That is, the event will support Goochland Rotary Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that was established by the Rotary Club to receive donations for its philanthropic pursuits. Additionally, proceeds from the program will also benefit Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, Goochland Court Appointed Special Advocates,Goochland YMCA and Goochland after high school, Watson stressed that this is not a mandatory commitment after participating in the high school’s MCJROTC program. For more information on tonight’s orientation, call Goochland County Schools at (804)556-5601.

Education Foundation. Incidentally, one of the Goochland Rotary Club’s ongoing projects has been a collaborative effort with Goochland Public Schools to fund field trips for students to attend Richmond Symphony performances at CenterStage in Richmond. “We wanted to bring classical music into the school environment to give children a chance to enjoy this type of music,” Barton said. “It’s going to do a lot of good for the school children.” At any rate, Barton said that he has seen the last five Richmond Symphony benefit performances that the Goochland Rotary Club has sponsored, and he described the experience as wonderful music that shouldn’t be missed. “It was a great experience, and (it was) very uplifting and fun,” Barton said. “It’s wonderful music, and they do a great job.” Advance tickets for the performance are $20 for adults and $15 for children 17 and under. Lady Bulldogs begin familiar run with title in mind Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
It was like déjà vu all over again as the Goochland Bulldogs entered the conference 34 playoffs, hosting a home game against. It’s not strange territory for coach Jennifer Erixon’s team. For the past three seasons, the team has progressed further and further in post-season play, falling just short of their goal of a state championship. Could this year be different? Many of the indicators point to yes.
Goochland running back David Dyer, 7, provided his usual brand of hard-nose running against Amelia on Nov 9. The Bulldogs and Raiders were tied at 21 at the half, but Goochland put up 39 second-half points to pull away from one of their James River District rivals.
Bulldogs claim playoff spot Goochland football team’s victory over Amelia means face-off with East Rockingham Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Homestanding Amelia High School was the last fly in the ointment on Goochland High School’s regular season schedule, and a win would mean the Bulldogs would host a first round playoff game next week. The Raiders proved more than sticky as they challenged Goochland’s vaunted offense with a determined defensive effort
that paid off, at least for the first half. “Amelia played great in the first half and went toe to toe with us,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. “We made some adjustments in the second half and moved a few kids around and played much better.” Goochland took the opening kickoff and promptly moved the ball down the field and capped the drive with a 60-yard scamper by Jaylen Allen. But the Raiders answered on their opening drive when Johnson hit pay dirt after a 20-yard scamper around end to tie the game at 7-7. Jordan Jefferson scored on a keeper early in the second period to give the Bulldogs a short-lived 14-7 lead. The Raiders knotted the game when quarterback Richard Brown hit Richard
Wojno with a long strike to set Amelia up deep in Bulldog territory. Deandre Johnson provided the final 20 yards on a touchdown run and the game was again knotted at 14. The Bulldogs found themselves in the unusual side of a first half score when the Raiders scored again when Johnson scored from one yard out, and Amelia led 21-7. Allen took matters into his hands on the ensuing kickoff and returned the ball to the Raider 49 to set up a final drive of the half. David Dyer finished off the drive with a determined 10-yard dash to the end zone, dragging Raider tacklers with him. see Goochland > page 13
Thanks to new playoff alignments, the Bulldogs will not face nemesis Matthews if they reach the state playoffs. Last year’s state champions have ended Goochland’s playoff run for the past two years. “With the new conferencing, this year’s playoffs are a whole new experience for me,” Bulldog coach Jennifer Erixon said. “And these girls are really motivated after losing to the same team two years on a row. They want to get to that see Volleyball > page 13
Collegiate advances to state title game In Collegiate High School’s first meeting with Flint Hill High School on Sept. 19, Wilton Speight threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He put on another career-defining performance this past Saturday when Flint Hill visited Collegiate in the semi-final round of the VISAA Division I playoffs. The 6’6, University of Michigan-bound senior finished with 245 yards and three touchdowns as the Cougars rolled the visitors 27-14 on a picture-perfect autumn day at Grover Jones Field. The win qualifies Collegiate for the VISAA Division I state championship game. The Cougars have won six Division I titles since the turn of the century, the last of which came in 2009. If the Cougars win this Saturday, it will be their first state championship with Speight running the show. A victory would be meaningful to all those involved with the Collegiate football program, but doubly significant for Speight, who had to fight back from a devastating collarbone injury (which required the insertion of a metal plate) during his sophomore year to get where he is today. This Saturday will undoubtedly be the apex of his career, win or lose, but a victory will allow him to ride into Ann Arbor with the designation of “state champion” attached to his already extraordinary resume. –Mike Schoeffel

Volleyball continued from > page 12 state tournament at the Siegel Center.” And Erixon said she’s learned from those two state playoff appearances, keeping a meticulous eye on this year’s preparation and focus. “We’ve really been working on our drive, focus and intensity,” she said. “We’re trying to do some of the things we’ve been working on this week to get ready,” Erixon added. The Nottoway Cougars rep-

resented the first obstacle in the Bulldogs playoff run but had little success against a focused and tenacious Goochland lineup that eventually featured every player on the varsity squad. After dropping the first game, the Cougars tied the second game at 3-3, but never got closer to a lead. Goochland recorded 25-9 wins in the Conference 34 semifinal, setting up a championship game with Bluestone. Following the opening win, Erixon was pleased with her team’s play, and said this week’s
tournament is good preparation for tougher competition looming in later rounds of the playoffs. “I thought the girls played well tonight and maintained their focus and intensity throughout the match,” she said. It’s definitely one game at a time for Erixon and the Bulldogs, but the coach is clearly eying her third state playoff appearance in as many years on the GHS campus. “We start out with that goal every year,” she said.
The Bulldogs met the Barons in the finals on Saturday, and walked away with a title. While Erixon was grateful for the win, she wasn’t exactly satisfied with her team’s effort. “It wasn’t one of our better games,” Erixon said. “We struggled with some things we normally don’t have issues with. Bluestone did a really good job keeping the pressure on us, and they didn’t go down without a fight.” Goochland cruised to a first game victory with 25-12, but hit a rough stretch in the second.

“The second game we came back from an eight or nine point deficit to win the second game 26-24,” the coach said. “ It was a good mental victory for the girls.” The Bulldogs won the third and title-earning win at 25-16. Erixon pointed to excellent leadership from her experienced players who turned the tide for the Bulldogs against Bluestone. “Brittany Woods, Erin Rodriguez, and Jesse Leroy all did a great job on Saturday with trying to keep the girls focused and working hard

each and every play of the match. Their leadership on Saturday was noticeable, and definitely played a very important role in the girls victory.” The Bulldogs host Windsor this week in the first round of the regional playoffs. “We won’t be able to have a slow start and have so many errors,” Erixon said. “We need to come out and play our game, at our level, and in our own gym. As long as the girls stay focused, limit errors, and play smart volleyball, we should be ok.”
Playoff preview: Goochland vs. East Rockingham Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

History East Rockingham High School may have opened its doors only three years ago, but their football team has made the most out of its four seasons in the Virginia High School League,
reaching the playoffs three times in their history (including this season). Last year was their most successful campaign to date. They finished the regular season with a 7-3 record, won one playoff game, and eventually fell in the regional final to an Essex team that Goochland thrashed 41-14 in the state title game. This Friday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between East Rockingham and Goochland.
2013 season East Rockingham competes in the Shenandoah District, possibly the most competitive collection of teams in all of Group 2A. This season, four of the eight teams – Wilson Memorial (9-1), Riverheads (9-1), Stuarts Draft (7-3) and East Rockingham (7-3) - finished with winning records. East Rockingham finished 1-2 against these teams, falling to Wilson Memorial and Riverheads but beating Stuarts Draft 20-10 in the regular season finale. Interestingly enough, that victory over Stuart’s Draft was the Eagles only win over a
Goochland continued from > page 12 With the game knotted at 21 when the first half began, it appeared Goochland’s defense got mad and recorded a three and out on the Raiders first possession of the second half. The defensive effort provided the offense and special teams with just the spark they needed. The teams recorded three third period touchdowns, and the Raiders struggled to make a first down. Goochland’s play on special teams was an important part of that third quarter onslaught.
team with a winning record all season. It might have been their most impressive, as well. After falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter, East Rockingham relied on the right leg of William Bullis and the right arm of Hunter Harmon to stage a comeback. The Eagles first touchdown was an eight-yard reception by Dylan Snyder just before the half that cut the Cougars lead to 10-7. They would tie the game on their first drive of the second half on field goal by Bullis. Bullis would drill a 41-yarder later in the quarter to give East Rockingham their first lead of night, 13-10. Harmon’s second touchdown pass of the evening – this one to Noah Brown - gave the Eagles a ten point lead. The defense shut out the Stuart’s Draft offense for the rest of the night, and East Rockingham came away with a 20-10 district victory. Harmon finished the game 16-of-25 for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
“I thought our special teams did a great job,” Fowler said. “Noah Easley grabbed a short punt and took it to the end zone and then Tyrell Hicks recovered a fumble on a kickoff and it gave us great field position and we were able to get some breathing room.” In the end, the Bulldogs recorded their highest point total of the season in the 58-35 win, but the first half score left an impression on Goochland coach Joe Fowler. “Having some adversity in the first half was good for us because we are going to be facing some great teams in the playoffs and nothing is going to come easy,” the coach said. Fowler and the Bulldogs now turn their focus to East
Prediction There aren’t any common opponents between the two teams, so it’s hard to get a gauge on where both teams stand in relation to one another. Goochland, like East Rockingham, has beaten only one team with a winning record (Buckingham, 7-3) so far in 2013. The Bulldogs have been on an incredible roll here of late, however, putting up at least 40 points in five of their last six games. Over the last three games – against Cumberland, Prince Edward and Amelia – the Bulldogs have scored 51, 52, and 58 points, respectively. If such a thing as momentum exists, Goochland definitely has it. They also have home field advantage, which is immeasurably important, especially in the playoffs. East Rockingham is no slouch – their strength of schedule proves that – but, then again, neither is Goochland. The Bulldogs take it 24-21, and continue their quest for a second consecutive state championship.
Rockingham, the first foe on their playoff schedule. “They are a very diverse team on offense with a lot of different formations. We will have to have a great week of practice to prepare for all that they are going to throw at us,” Fowler said. “Defensively, they are very big and physical. We will need to do a great job blocking at the point of attack and hope to break some big plays with our speed.” Game time is 7 p.m. this Friday at Goochland High School. Goochland Amelia
