GETTING CONNECTED

Leaders still seeking solutions to bring high speed Internet access to county’s most rural areas By Roslyn Ryan Editor

or Bonnie Creasy, there is one surefire way to gauge the impact of Goochland’s lack of county-wide high speed Internet service: check the local restaurants. There, said Creasy, who serves as the Executive Director for the Goochland Chamber of Commerce, you’ll find dozens of local entrepreneurs hunched over their laptops, taking advantage of the high speed connections they can’t get in their homes. Alvarez The problem, at its root,

is certainly a familiar one to so many people living in areas removed from the hustle and bustle — and connectivity — of an urban center: the more bucolic the setting, the more likely you are to be stuck with less-than-adequate Internet or cell phone service. Unfortunately, said Creasy, that often means headaches for anyone attempting to work from home, including both telecommuters and those who run homebased businesses. “The Internet has become a necessity for all of us in both business and our personal lives,” Creasy

Dentist hosting Man dies after standoff with deputies holiday food drive Contributed Report

A Goochland man died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday after a standoff with police, during which the man reportedly set his home on fire According to the Goochland Sheriff’s Office, Michael S. Fuller, 42, of 1651 Fayette Road in Manakin-Sabot, shot himself after deputies entered the home to extinguish

the flames. Deputies were called to the residence shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday night by Fuller’s estranged wife. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Fuller threatened her and his three children ages 14, 13, and 11 with a handgun. Fuller’s wife and three children had arrived at their home unaware that Fuller was waiting for them.

By Ken Odor Special Correspondent

Fuller’s wife escaped with one child but two of the children remained in the home with Fuller. When deputies arrived, they attempted to reason with Fuller to no avail. While they were talking to Fuller on the cell phone, the remaining two children broke from the home and Fuller fired a shot. At this time it is not known whether or not the shot was aimed at his

It’s that time of year, when folks pitch in to help out the less fortunate during the holiday season. In Manakin-Sabot, Dr. Sarah Wilmer and staff are holding their own food drive to collect items for the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services agency. And they’ve got an appropriate name for their effort, calling it the “Attitude of Gratitude Drive.”

Shortly after taking office in 2012, county supervisors created a High Speed Internet Committee to take stock where in the access was lacking and what solutions were available to help remedy the situation . Led by District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez, who made the broadband coverage issue a key part of his platform when he ran for his seat in 2011, the group came up with seven recommendations for the board. Those recommendations, presented in a report last October,

Another hurdle they have worked to overcome? Antiquated sections of the state code, which Alvarez likes to point out contains far more references to telegraph wires than to Internet service. While some of the committee’s ideas didn’t quite pan out — they had approached several providers about expanding their coverage areas, only to be told it wasn’t currently feasible — there has been definite progress.

The supervisors have recently unanimously approved two cell towers, Alvarez said, noting that each should help bring better communication to underserved areas and that more towers will be built as demand continues to increase. To District 1 representative Susan Lascolette, whose district encompasses the western part of the county, most of which as little to no access to high speed Internet service, a solution to the connectivity problem can’t come soon enough. “The lack of high speed internet service puts our school children, residents, and businesses at a disadvantage,” Lascolette said. “Life would change drastically for the better if a low cost service was available.” Fortunately, Lascolette said, there is hope on the horizon. “There are a lot of very smart people in the county working on this, and I remain hopeful that we will find an innovative market-based solution.”

When planning a county, looks matter By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“As with the food we eat and the air we breathe, so the sights habitually before our eyes play an immense part of determining whether we feel cheerful, efficient and fit for life.” I recently came across this quote, attributed to the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead Jr., in a magazine article about the history of Boulder, Colo. Boulder, it would seem (and I have to admit I am taking the author’s word for it, having never visited the place) has somehow, over the last 150 years, managed to mold itself into a rather exceptional place. The city of just over 97,000 has become a haven for young entrepreneurs and artists alike, is ranked as one of the Top 10 Healthiest Cities to Live and Retire, and recently captured the number one spot on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Boulder also has, as so many will attest, become known for its spectacular beauty, a quality the city owes as much to its planning as to its location. And this visual appeal has been given a good deal of the credit for the community’s success. In 1908, when the early residents first hired Olmstead to consult on their planning process, the architect was most adamant about keeping the city, above all, attractive. He

warned against sprawl and “dirty industries,” and urged leaders to focus on creating a visually uplifting place where people would want to spend their lives. After speaking with Goochland County leaders and listening to them describe their vision for this county, it is easy to see that they have similar leanings. Here, at a critical juncture in Goochland’s development, they also know that each decision they make with regard to development will play a big role in shaping the county that future generations of Goochland residents will inherit. Will it be a prosperous and healthy place, where people of all ages enjoy an enviable quality of life? Will it be well-planned and free of sprawl, carefully designed to connect people efficiently with the services they need? Will it make its own Top 10 lists on a regional, even national, level? As has been proven again and again, the earlier a group of leaders can get ahead of development and guide it in a well-planned and responsible way, the better for the community. “Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning,” Thomas Edison said — and planning, with an eye toward building a community that is both visually appealing and efficient, is the best way we can ensure our own good fortune for years to come.

Access to high speed Internet for all is not a partisan issue By William Quarles Contributing Columnist

In an age of government shutdowns, hyper-partisanship and extreme rhetoric, it seems like there aren’t a lot of things we can agree on these days. Luckily, I think I’ve stumbled upon at least one: Internet access to rural communities. I know, not as exciting as you may have expected. But just ask folks living in certain parts of Goochland or Powhatan or Fluvanna about their experience with internet access, and you’ll find out rather quickly that this issue is anything but insignificant. You see, internet access isn’t simply a frivolous pastime. It’s an important tool; one that connects communities and encourages development. The economic benefits alone are staggering. Access to high-speed internet allows workers to telecommute, simultaneously increasing productivity and reducing costs to the employers. It also encourages entrepreneurs to start new businesses or to expand old ones by taking advantage of access to wider markets. The district’s educational system would also reap the benefits. According to a 2012 study by the

Hudson Institute, online courses provide opportunities to rural students that may only exist on faraway campuses. Improved Internet access means children will get the training they need for the jobs that they want. Even agriculture, long seen as incompatible with modern technology, can be improved by establishing an infrastructure that includes high-speed internet. According to the same Hudson report, things like real-time price reports, remote monitoring of issues in the field, and cost reductions associated with researching livestock online are all made possible by greater access to the internet. And it doesn’t stop there. The significant benefits to health systems, consumer-based businesses and overall economic equality as a direct result of greater internet connectivity cannot be overstated or ignored. There are a lot of things we may not be able to agree on, but increasing access to high-speed internet in rural communities like Powhatan should not be one of them. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Living in this beautiful county has been rewarding. though hunting season continues to bring a number issues that I find disturbing. For the last several years, including the current, hunters (and I use the term loosely, since this paper is read by the general public) have been discarding deer carcasses along Tabscott Road. Some only have the tenderloins removed, others are headless skeletons. This week alone I found three on the state road by my property. Littering is a punishable offense but I find that this deserves more than a potential fine. With

ing infrastructure, we would be able to improve our community’s educational system, agricultural sector and economic standing in one fell swoop. In the 1930s and 1940s, rural electrification revitalized entire swaths of the nation. By providing high-speed, high-quality internet to our rural areas, we can expect that same kind of revitalization. The people of the 65th District deserve nothing less.

“The significant benefits to health systems, consumerbased businesses and overall economic equality ... cannot be overstated.”

the advent of surveillance cameras one can easily capture the culprits. I hope that the Gazette would consider publishing such pictures. To me, this may prove to be a more effective way of curtailing this type of behavior. Not only does it disparage the true sportsmen but it attracts predators such as coyotes, bobcats and wild dogs, which can pose a public and livestock danger. Furthermore, this type of behavior will further restrict the use of private lands for hunting. Even though the culprits are a distinct minority, their behavior shines a negative light on all hunters. Respectfully, Richard Carchman Columbia

Finally at full strength, Bulldogs ready to roll By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland head boys’ basketball coach Preston Gordon is a busy man as his Bulldogs prepare to open their season this week at Cumberland. The coach is not only welcoming back a group of football players to his squad after their playoff run, but also has a much more important addition at home. Gordon and his wife welcomed a new baby girl to the world last week; so hectic is probably an understatement when describing the coach’s life. And, then there’s basketball; and the Bulldogs return a wealth of experience for the 2014-14 campaign. First team, all district player Cee Jay Johnson will quarterback the Bulldog attack, and Josh Hayden returns for his senior season. “Ceejay Johnson, first team all district, has the potential to be in the running for JRD

player of the year, and will be the backbone of our offense and defense,” Gordon said. “Senior Josh Hayden who was second team all JRD should be a first teamer this year, and he has the potential to have a break out season.” David Dyer should contribute both from the outside and inside as he returns from a stellar performance on the football field. “ Senior David Dyer, who was typically our sixth man last year, will look to contribute from the outside and inside as soon as he gets his basketball legs,” Gordon said. Jordan Jefferson also will be a key factor in the Bulldog lineup, adding his level of athletic prowess to the attack. Cephas Harden also returns to the lineup, and juniors“Reggie Hobbs and Cory Alexander (leg stress fracture) will provide a tremendous amount of help Photo by Jim Ridolphi from the wing spots and are both capable of being starters.” Ceejay Johnson (left) returns for what should be a spectacular That being said, Gordon’s senior season for the Goochland Bulldogs.

game is team basketball, and he expects all of his players to contribute to that effort. “It is tough to single out a few particular players this year, but the Bulldogs are well balanced from all positions. Overall it will be fun to watch this group of guys improve from game to game this season,” he said. A healthy dose of newcomers should also contribute to this year’s effort. Juniors Noah Easley and Jayrell Myles and sophomore B.J. Snead will play key roles in the Bulldogs defense and offense. “Jayrell has the potential of being an offensive threat with his basketball IQ, and has made the most improvements over the summer and fall, and Noah has improved his shooting and will be able to knock down a few outside shots to keep the defense on their toes,” Gordon said. Snead averaged 20 points per game at the JV level. “Teams better not overlook his tenac-

ity and grit on defense along with his craftiness on offense,” Gordon said. Darius Morris and Zorian Thornton should provide good perimeter shooting for the Bulldogs, and provide more energy on defense. Even with the late start due to another successful football season, Gordon is optimistic about this year’s campaign, and said the football season helped those efforts in some ways. “Getting Jordan Jefferson’s basketball legs will not take long as he is a tremendous athlete and student for all sports he plays. Our football players are in top shape, so getting their basketball legs and finding their shots will be critical every year.” The bulldogs will host their annual Holiday Tournament December 20-21, with Eastern View, West Point and Louisa providing an exciting lineup for the tourney. Other opponents looming on the Goochland schedule see Boys> page 10

Bulldogs top Titans in tourney, team goes 1-1 in Dale Travis Invitational By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

There’s a new look to the Goochland Bulldogs girls varsity basketball team. Sure, some of the team’s leaders are back for return seasons, but this year’s squad is under the direction of a new coach who brings a different style of basketball to Goochland. The girls tested their wings in the Trinity Episcopal’s Dale Travis tournament last weekend. The Bulldogs had mixed results, losing a close game to

Walsingham Academy in the opener, but capturing a convincing win in the consolation game against host Trinity. Tierra Morris had 19 points against the Titans, and Carolin Kretzer added 13 to propel the Bulldogs to their first win. It’s all new territory for first year Goochland coach Bari Nixon. “This is a new group of girls with a new coach,” Nixon said earlier this week. “There will be an adjustment period as they figure out what I expect from them and I figure out their strengths and areas to improve.

We have new players stepping into important roles, so that will also take some adjustment,” she added. Senior returning starter Khayla Leabough will lead the Bulldog, and Nixon thinks her experience and leadership are key elements to her team’s success. “Khayla Leabough is a senior returning starter as well as a captain. I rely on her to lead the team on the floor as she is our starting guard,” Nixon said. Jessica Liddle also returns for her senior season. The

coach is also depending her for a leadership role. “Jessica Liddle is another senior captain who will be relied upon to be a verbal leader, and she naturally leads by example,” Nixon said. Abbie Robinson, another senior captain, and Asia Keith also makes a repeat appearance on this year’s roster. “Abbie Robinson, another senior captain, is a consistent player who is very supportive of her teammates. I expect more production out of her this year. Asia Keith is a returning starter who is athletic and

quick,” Nixon said. But, it’s the newcomers who make the difference on this year’s squad. Nixon expects big things from the new faces. “Although there are returning starters, there are new players who will be inserted into the starting line up. That combined with a new coach and a new system, I feel as though we lack some experience as a team and even returning starters may find themselves in new roles,” she said. The tournament’s hero, Tierra Morris, is a freshman guard who will play a vital role

in this year’s success. “She will see a good amount of playing time, and will be a big part of our success.” Carolin Kretzer, a German exchange student, also had a good tournament at Trinity. “She knows the game very well and is fundamentally our best player,” Nixon said. “She will be relied upon on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.” Nixon enters this season with a clear expectation from her players. “My expectation, see Girls> page 10

At Benedictine Prep School, wrestling is a bigger deal than at most area schools. Need evidence? Look no further than the fact that school was released early on Wednesday, Dec. 4 so students could make their way to the legendary Rut Court at 304 N. Sheppard Street to watch Benedictine’s first home wrestling match of the new season. Those who chose to make the trek to the Rut — and there were many, to be sure — were not disappointed

in the Cadets performance. In their first match, against the Glen Allen Jaguars, Benedictine doubled their opponents score and. In their second and final match of the day against Varina, the Cadets pummeled the Varina Blue Devils by a 74-6 final. “I couldn’t be prouder of the way the team performed,” said head coach Ryan Hall, who is also the athletic director at Benedictine. “It was a great way to start the season, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep the momentum going as the season keeps rolling.” The Jaguars jumped out to a 12-0 advantage in the first match of the day, but that lead wouldn’t hold for very long. The Cadets won the next eight matches — five by way of the pin — to take a entirely insurmountable 4118 lead. In the Cadets second match of the afternoon, the

home team left absolutely no doubt which squad was the more physical, well-trained group of athletes. They took all but one of the matches, defeating the visiting Blue Devils 75-6. The Cadets were so dominant, in fact, that only two of the matches extended beyond the first round. The Blue Devils were forced to forfeit four of their matches due to the fact that they didn’t have any wrestlers to fill several weight classes. Benedictine competed in the highly-touted Skyline Elite Opener on Dec. 7, an early-season wrestling tournament that featured some of the most talented squads from around the Northern Virginia area. The Cadets will continue their season this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14-15, at the Richmond Invitational at Hermitage High School.

on May 22, 1925, he was second of 11 children born to Mable Turner and Donovan Paul Yates, Sr. of Richmond. Graduate of St. Patrick’s High School (1943), WWII veteran, Signalman “Flags”, Second Class USNAG (1943-46). Don (Pappy) was a 35-year Mechanicsville resident and lifelong letter writer to family, friends, and newspaper editors near and far. Avid reader, expert gardener, crafty card player, master crossword solver and gifted raconteur on all matters great and small. His full heart, prodigious memory, and perfect pitch were his signature at all Yates and Dabney’s Lake gatherings. Above all else he loved his wife, his children, and their families. A celebration of his life will be held at Paul’s home on Jan. 4, 2014 from noon to 4 p.m. at 663 Rock Castle Road in Goochland.
