County residents get stage time in ‘The Nutcracker’ By Korey Hughes Contributing Writer
A world-renowned ballet about a girl’s wondrous dreams will soon hit the stage, and Goochland residents are getting in on the act. The Richmond Ballet began its performances of “The Nutcracker on Dec. 13, featuring the county’s own Guinevere Buono portraying Mother Ginger Bunny, Isabella Lipkey playing Mouse and Kobe Courtney as a Party Scene Girl. Shows take place at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage at 600 E. Grace St. in Richmond through Monday, Dec. 23. A re-imagining of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s two-act ballet, artistic director Stoner Winslett’s version will feature live music provided by Virginia Symphony Orchestra. This year marks the Richmond Ballet’s 30th anniversary. Therefore, it’s only fitting that the organization will bring the show to the public this year. “The Nutcracker was the first full-length production that the company did, and it’s been a part of our repertoire for many years, said Kate Crowder, public relations and
promotions coordinator for Richmond Ballet. “It’s a story that so many people can relate to because it has elements of holiday tradition. “There’s humor and fabulous music. And, of course, there’s wonderful dancing as well. But, bringing “The Nutcracker to the stage requires lots of work. In fact, production began on costumes and sets last summer, while the dancers started rehearsals in October. Two casts, which include over 100 actors each with nearly 175 youngsters from the School of the Richmond Ballet, will take part in the performances. Not only will the show wow audiences in central Virginia, but the performances have also toured for the first time since 2009. That is, Richmond Ballet presented “The Nutcracker at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk from Friday, Dec. 6 through Sunday, Dec. 8. But, the organization regularly hits the road to share its artistry with local school children during its Minds in Motion program. Since 1995, the campaign has been providing new cultural experiences to local students by bringing ballet into the
classroom. “It’s our community outreach arm, and it’s a wonderful way that students who have never been exposed to dance can experience it for the first time, Crowder said. “We go into schools with our teachers, and it’s meant to be fun. “The students learn steps, how to coordinate with each other and how to respect each other. We want to teach kids to build bridges using the worlds of dance and discipline. As a matter of fact, some former Minds in Motion participants have transitioned into the School of the Richmond Ballet and will make appearances in “The Nutcracker. At any rate, “The Nutcracker will be the perfect chance for parents to share a fun and unique experience with their children this holiday season. “It’s an opportunity for families to come together and to do something with each other, Crowder said. “It has all these enduring parts that encourage families to spend time together. For more information including performances and ticket prices, visit www.richmondballet.com.

of minimal achievement and time-consuming benchmark tests are replaced by measurements of student growth toward and authentic, performance-based assessments that allow students to learn using real-world concepts and exercise higher level skills such as critical analysis, creativity, and problem solving. Geyer’s wife and two children, both Goochland students, joined him on stage for the presentation of the award. “Any recognition like this is the result of exceptional teamwork and the hard work of many,” Geyer shared with the crowd as he accepted the award. “I am blessed to serve the community of Goochland and to work with visionary leaders, dedicated professionals, and supportive families.”

Funding continued from > page 3 exclusion system includes both stream and/or interior fencing, water troughs, pipe and the development of a water source to provide clean water to the livestock. The practice requires a minimum 35 foot setback from a stream. Monacan District staff works together with the landowner to create the most efficient design for the practice. An estimated cost is created from the design. For producers who have been considering a stream exclusion system, now is the best chance to receive funding at the 100 percent level.
The state has guaranteed to fund this practice at 100 percent as long as sign up occurs within the next two years (July 1 through June 30, 2015). It is possible that this practice will receive no state funding after June 30, 2015 and stream exclusion for livestock will become mandatory and regulated. An additional new benefit of this program is that there is no financial cap for a project utilizing this funding. In previous years, individual producers were limited to $70,000 cost share. If you are interested or have questions, call the Monacan District office at (804)556-4936 and speak with Keith Burgess or Betty McCracken.

A DOG’S LIFE Goochland resident Joanne Baldwin cradles one of her new Havana Silk Dog puppies. Baldwin, who once considered herself a “big dog person” at one time, now breeds Havana Silk Dogs full time. “They just enrich your life,” she said of the dogs.
One special breed Retired veterinarian now devotes much of her time to breeding and showing Havana Silk Dogs By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A retired veterinarian, Goochland resident Joanne Baldwin has spent the better part of her life studying, caring for and breeding dogs of all shapes and sizes. But she makes no bones about the fact that one breed holds a particularly special place in her heart. Baldwin currently shares her home with a small pack of Havana Silk Dogs, shortlegged, plucky pups whose impish faces peer out from behind mops of long, silky hair. An award-winning breeder and the owner of Elfin Havana Silk Dogs, Baldwin recently welcomed two new litters to her family. The puppies have been spending their first few weeks of life safely tucked away in Baldwin’s house, surrounded by several decades worth of trophies, ribbons, photos and paintings, all celebrating the champion Havana Silk Dogs that came before them. So why, out of all the breeds out there, has this one captured Baldwin’s heart? “They just enrich your life,” Baldwin said. “They’re intuitive, funny and smart.” Baldwin recalled the first time she was introduced to the breed, through a friend who owned a Havana Silk Dog. Though she had owned mostly large dogs up to that point, she was smitten. “I said to myself ‘Someday I am going to have one of these little rug rats’.”
Though some might confuse Havana Silk Dogs with the similarly named Havanese, the two are separate — though inextricably linked — breeds. As Baldwin explained, Havana Silk Dogs were the result of attempts by members of the Havanese Association of America to breed away from the debilitating traits that had come to be associated with the dogs. The debate would eventually fracture the group, with those who had pushed for reforms leaving to form their own organization — and champion a new breed in the process. Though not recognized by the American Kennel Club as being a distinct breed, Havana Silk Dogs are often
described by their breeders as being healthier and more akin to their Cuban ancestors than the Havanese. These days, Baldwin spends most of her time on her breeding operation and working to educate others about Havana Silk Dogs. She also draws, paints and writes poetry about the dogs, and has published two books on the topic. Some things, of course, have changed since the days when she fell for her first Havana Silk Dog. The first time she handed a puppy she had bred over to its new owner, “I cried,” Baldwin said. “Now I can say ‘Here’s your puppy — you are going to have the time of your life with this dog.’”

Christmas magic often takes some work By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Looking at Santa Claus’s face that blustery evening, with the wind-chill plummeting and three or four dozen little arms pulling on the hem of his red coat, one thing was plain to see: It had been a very long day. His appearance at the shelter had obviously been hyped for several hours, giving each child in attendance ample time to compose a lengthy wish list and a no-fail plan to wriggle right to the front of the crowd. And now, as the mini mob closed in, this volunteer Santa looked — for just a moment — very close to being overwhelmed. It didn’t last. Gathering his bearings — and taking what appeared to be a very deep breath — he plunged into the crowd. Making his way to a chair that had been set aside, he spent the next two hours listening patiently as the throng of boys and girls passed one by one over his lap, receiving each and every Christmas wish as if it were the first he’d heard all day. Simply put, it was a sight to see. They don’t give Oscars for these types of performances, those given by volunteers who

somehow manage to radiate Christmas cheer and good will even when they are past the point of exhaustion — and that is a shame, because rarely has an award been so deserved. In light of this, I would like to propose a new honor — maybe some kind of special medal — to be presented to the people who work so hard to make the holidays wonderful for the rest of us. Judging from experience, we may be giving out quite a few. We’d surely be handing them out to everyone involved with the Goochland Christmas Mother program, as well as all of those who staff the food pantries and deliver meals to those in need. We’d hand out more than a few to our fire and rescue personnel, and our wonderful deputies, who selflessly sacrifice time with their own families to keep us all safe. And we’d reserve a special honor, of course, for all Santas everywhere who spend their holidays “ho ho ho”ing themselves hoarse to help keep the joy of Christmas alive for kids who might not otherwise have a very bright holiday. Personally, I think it’s the least we can do. Magical Christmases often take a lot of work, after all, and those who manage to make them happen are the true gifts.

Victories measured in degrees By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
For the past six weeks, Christmas has taken a back seat around our house, as we progressed day-to-day through my son’s serial casting procedure to assist him in walking. It’s something most of us take for granted, but, for Jack, walking is a daily struggle to negotiate the normal paths of life. Placing casts on his ankles would, hopefully, turn his feet inward by a few degrees improving his gait, allowing him to maybe walk longer. Each week, a new cast was placed on Jack’s legs, and he dutifully accepted the disappointing analysis of the results. But things started to change midway through the procedure, and we celebrated with each degree gained as Jack progressed. Last week, the cast came off and Jack’s right leg had turned a full 10 degrees, almost back to a normal position. I never imagined victories measured in degrees could bring such happiness to a family. It was
a collective gift that made us all realize just how fragile and precious each and every life is. Since Jack’s diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, holidays are a constant reminder of a clock that ticks for children with MD. Their annual arrival means another year has passed in an inevitable march toward an end we never discuss. And, yes, it’s terribly painful for me as I consider the realities of an enemy I can’t defeat, a fight I cannot win and an opponent who will one day claim its terrible victory. It’s a reality I live with daily, but — even with its despairingly painful message — it also offers a pragmatic reality of the importance of every day. When I stopped by Jack’s school to pick him up last week, I inquired how he was getting around at school. “It’s hard for him, but he never complains,” his teacher said. “He never does,” I replied. Now, I’m not sure how or from whence special children like Jack gather their enormous courage and strength, but I’m amazed
Driver thanks those who came to her aid after recent accident Dear Editor, On Monday, Dec. 9 I was on my way to work on Fairgrounds Road when falling limbs hit my car and shattered the windshield. I was not hurt but was shook up. I am sorry for the commuters who were inconvenienced because of downed limbs. I do want to thank the FedEx driver who notified police for me, a man named Richard who offered me a seat in his van, Officer Murat, who called for a tow and told me exactly what was going to happen, and Frank of Earl Best who towed my car and gave me a ride to work. Several others stopped to ask if I was OK. To all of you, my thanks.
at it and sure thankful for it. I watch his silent struggle daily, and see how he covers his pain, hides his discomfort. I see the look on his face as he watches other children run and play after school. Which brings us to Christmas and its promise of hope and goodwill, and, yes, miracles. We believe in them around here. As for gifts, no one has to remind me or my daughters of the amazing one we have yearround in Jack. But this year, we counted our blessings in degrees, and, in the true spirit of the season, our prayers were answered when it came to Jack’s treatment. Jack is excited about Christmas, but just as pleased about wearing tennis shoes on both feet again. He takes nothing for granted. Neither should we. So, we can finally get to the important stuff. As Jack puts the final touches on our Christmas tree, my girls are tweaking their lists to Santa . . . and we’re finally in the spirit of the season. And me . . . I’m the luckiest guy in the world.

Lady Bulldogs upping game as season begins The easy win allowed the Bulldogs to concentrate on fundamentals. “It gave us a chance to work on our man to man defense, boxing out and those types of things,” Nixon said. Three games in to the season, Nixon said she’s still learning how to gauge her team’s potential and performance levels. “I’m still learning how things are going to go and how to read them,” Nixon said. “For a new coach, new team, I think things are going well. I’m pleased.” The girls take on Amelia and Buckingham this week. The boys dropped a tough road game to Prince Edward 88-81 last week after recording a win in the opener at Cumberland 74-59. The boys take on Amelia at home this week, and open their Holiday Tournament against Louisa on Friday.
Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
The Goochland Lady Bulldogs took full advantage of an opening schedule that found them at home for the first two games of the regular season recording wins against Cumberland and Prince Edward. The girls showed some tenacity against the Dukes, erasing an eight-point deficit to finally record the victory. “We made it a little more difficult than tit had to be. We were up and down the whole game,” Goochland coach Bari Nixon said after the win. “We were down eight going in to the fourth and ended up winning by eight. We had two really good quarters and two where we were totally out of sync,” she added. Freshman Tierra Morris continues to impress early in the season, and Nixon said she’s definitely a difference maker. “She’s only a freshman. She brings a lot of energy to the game. She plays year round basketball, so she has more knowledge,” Nixon said. “She’s committed to playing defense and offense. She can hit the outside shot or drive to the basket, so she has the whole package,” the coach added.

Goochland’s Tierra Morris (5) keeps the ball away from a Prince Edward defender. Morris is off to a great start for the Bulldogs, recording 19 points and six steals against the Eagles.
Nixon said she expected the lack of consistency in a group with new players and limited experience. “It’s early. This is only our third game, so it’s going to take some time for all of us to get
on the same page,” Nixon said. “We have a lot of new players inserted in to the starting lineup, so it’s going to take a little time to mesh.” The going was much easier against Prince Edward, whose
offense sputtered against the home standing Bulldogs. Up 27-2 at the half, Nixon took advantage of the opportunity to play her reserves. “I got to play a lot of girls and see how quickly they react,
so it was good to get them in the game,” Nixon said after the 56-16 victory. “It shows me what they can do and what they need to work on to get better,” she added.

A unique college preparatory and scholarship program is helping low- and moderate-income students, including a Goochland County resident, prepare for and achieve higher education. fall. Shelby Cutright was a 10th grader when she joined the program’s initial cohort in 2010. She credits SOAR Virginia with giving her the courage to think college was possible and the information she needed to apply. Virginia529 works with the GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program Inc. (GRASP), a college access provider, to implement the SOAR Virginia program in the Richmond area. “SOAR Virginia is unique in that it combines the hands-on services of access providers with the financial incentive of a scholarship,” Mary Morris, Virginia529 CEO said. “Together, they increase students’ likelihood of success once in college, particularly for those who are the first in their families to attain higher education.” © Zap2it

Virginia Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe recently announced his staff for the Terry McAuliffe Inaugural Committee. And among those named was Goochland’s Mark Bowles. “This great team will help me build an inauguration that brings Virginians together from all corners of the Commonwealth and sets the tone for an administration focused on finding common ground around solutions that work for Virginia families,” Governor-elect McAuliffe said. Bowles is Executive Vice President at McGuireWoods Consulting & Partner, McGuireWoods, LLP.

Shelby said she is interested in performing arts and eventually wants to direct theater productions. After attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College for two years, she plans to transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University. Students at participating schools are eligible to join the program in the 10th grade. If they participate for three years and meet all the requirements, they can earn up to $2,000 in college scholarship funding. More than 600 students in 30 schools from Lee County to the Eastern Shore participated in SOAR Virginia last year. After expanding the program to new schools this fall, program leaders expect nearly 1,200 students to participate in 2013-2014.
