Benedictine plan will be appealed Court ruled Board of Zoning Appeals had no jurisdiction By Ken Odor Special Correspondent
Attorney Patrick M. McSweeney says he intends to appeal a Nov. 5 ruling by the Goochland County Circuit Court that threw out actions by the Goochland Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) to force modification of the plan of development for Benedictine College Preparatory School’s River Road site. The lower court ruled that the BZA lacked jurisdiction to hear appeals from neighbors on River Road and furthermore, that the neighbors had no standing to appeal. The final order of the court was issued Nov. 20. “The families that own land across River Road from the property owned by the Benedictine Society have appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court the decision of the Goochland County Circuit Court that the Board of Zoning Appeals lacked jurisdiction to decide their challenge to the County’s approval of the Benedictine Plan of Development. The BZA found in August that the POD authorized changes to the Benedictine property and River Road that caused flooding to downstream properties owned by the adjacent families and reversed the County’s approval of the POD. The families will submit a detailed petition to the Virginia Supreme Court in the weeks to come,” see Benedictine > page 4

Many people who regularly drive along Hadensville-Fife Road in western Goochland might not know the history of the small, tidy, two-room building located at the rear of Second Union Baptist Church’s parking lot. But if LeVonne Johnson and his family have their way, that won’t be the case for long. Hopkins It was during a trip with the Richmond Area League of Women Voters that Johnson first visited the former Second Union School, the oldest surviving Rosenwald school in the county (see sidebar, below). There, Johnson talked to former students and learned of the building’s history, that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and that it had provided black children in Goochland with a first-rate school experience during a time when access

Second Union School continued from > page 1 to education — particularly in the rural south — was woefully unequal. He also learned that there was an effort underway to rejuvenate the structure — which had suffered from years of neglect after closing its doors in 1959 — and turn it into a museum. By the time he left after his visit that afternoon, Johnson had decided that and his family needed to be a part of that effort. On Dec. 18, the family presented a donation of $740 to the nonprofit Second Union School, Inc., the organization heading up the rehabilitation project. The funds will be added to money already obtained through membership, donations and a grant from Lowe’s. “My family had been talking for years about doing a Thanksgiving/ Christmas project,” Johnson said. “So at one of our sibling lunches I proposed making a financial contribution to the school rehabilitation program.”
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
While Johnson and his siblings weren’t raised in Goochland, their family’s ties to the county run deep; both their father and grandmother were born in the county, and the family can trace its roots in Goochland all the way back to the 1800s. The Johnsons also have special familial tie to the Second Union School itself: brother-in-law Calvin
“Hopefully, through this, [today’s generation] will become educated.” Calvin Hopkins, president of the Second Union School’s Board of Directors
Hopkins, president of the Second Union School’s Board of Directors, was a student there from 1953-1959 and looks back with pride on an experience that stressed hard work and discipline as the foundations of a successful life. Hopkins said the project, which he envisions as a “living museum,” will
highlight and preserve the struggles and accomplishments of those who passed through the school’s doors. What they also want to do, Hopkins said, is to “tell the entire experience” of African-Americans in Goochland during the first part of the 20th century, using the lives of Second Union School as a conduit for that tale. Hopkins’ hope now is that others in the community will also embrace the project, as well as its motto: “preserve, promote and inspire.” Today’s generation may not know just how hard their parents and grandparents struggled for equality, Hopkins said. “Hopefully, through this, they will become educated.” Second Union Rosenwald School, Inc. will be holding its first annual meeting, membership drive and dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 11, (snow date Jan. 18). The event will be held at Second Union Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 2843 Hadensville-Fife Rd in Goochland. For more information visit secondunionrosenwaldschool.org.

Rosenwald Schools tried to close educational gap Created largely between 1917 and 1948, Rosenwald Schools were intended to help rectify a fundamental inequality between the educational opportunities offered to white children in the early part of the 20th century and those offered to African-American. The name of the schools honored Julius Rosenwald, a German-Jewish immigrant who would rise to become part owner and president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and eventually found The Rosenwald Foundation. It was this fund that provided seed money for the Rosenwald Schools, though much support also came from public funds, and from millions in donations from African Americans

hoping to provide a better education for their children. Rosenwald was reportedly inspired to contribute to the schools after meeting with famed author and orator Booker T. Washington. Though over 5,000 Rosenwald Schools once dotted the southern United States, many of the structures have been lost to history, taking with them an important piece of African-American history. In 2002, the National Trust for Historic Preservation identified the schools as some of the country’s most endangered historic places. To date, 23 of the schools, including the Second Union School, has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Goochland County has had its share of famous residents, visitors and colorful stories and Aynsley Fisher and Wayne Dementi have assembled 26 of them in their new book, “Facts and Legends of Goochland County.” The two authors gave about 60 members of the Goochland Historical Society a preview of the book at the club’s Christmas meeting at Deep Run Hunt Club Dec. 15. After the business meeting and their presentation, Fisher and Dementi signed copies of their book for members. Fisher described her journey of discovery in writing the book and the remarkable aspects of Goochland that she uncovered along the way. “We’ve got an Oscar nominee, an Olympic gold medallist and a Cy Young award winner here in Goochland,” said Fisher. “It’s not only a beautiful county, it’s filled with unique people,” Fisher and Dementi touched on a few of the book’s stories in their presentation. One of Fisher’s favorite chapters tells the story of Nellie Mae Cox of Rose Retreat Farm, who put off her dream of raising thoroughbreds until her children were grown and whose horse Showing Up ran in the 2006 Kentucky Derby and
won more than $1.6 million that year. “I just love the story of Nellie Mae Cox,” said Fisher after the book signing, when asked what might be her favorite story in the book. “She achieved her life-long dream as a grandmother,” explained Fisher. “Her heart is so into it.” Fisher and Dementi ran through several other of the book’s highlights for the club members, including Trans-Atlantic aviator Charles “Lucky Lindy” Lindbergh’s two flying visits to Goochland, the first to William T. Reed’s Ben Dover hunting retreat on Route 6 in 1927, the same year as his historic Atlantic crossing flight. The book also features a chapter on the historic Second Union Rosenwald School in Hadensville, one of hundreds built as a result of the collaboration of Booker T. Washington, philanthropist Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck and Company fame and local communities. The school has been restored and is now a museum dedicated to Black American Education. Another chapter chronicles the history of Tanglewood Ordinary on Route 6, built in 1928 and now a family restaurant owned by Jim and Anne Hardwick, which once enjoyed a reputation as a rowdy nightspot. “They used to call it the “knife and
gun club,” joked Jim Harwick after the presentation. Other chapters tell stories of British General Lord Charles Cornwallis’ ravaging of Thomas Jefferson’s property at Elk Hill during the Revolutionary War after a failed attempt to capture Jefferson, the history of the Commonwealth Polo Match and the growth of the Eagle Classic golf tournament. Fisher said the inspiration to do the book came partly from the fact that Dementi had done similar books on facts and legends of Richmond. She said she started on the book in 2010 but took time off to finish her first book on the Deep Run Hunt Club. Fisher is now looking for her next project, she said “I’d like to do another book,” said Fisher, while admitting she hasn’t hit on the right idea just yet. Meanwhile she and Jenny Liesfeld continue to work on VisitGoochland. org, a web site promoting tourism in the county. “Facts and Legends of Goochland County” can be bought for $25 at a number of locations in the county, including the Chamber of Commerce office in the courthouse, St. Mary’s Church, the Whitehawk Music Café, Gunn’s Pharmacy or by visiting the web site www.dementimilestonepublishing.com.
not the result of any actions taken by the County,” wrote Dickson. “That said, I am sure you can appreciate that the County cannot spend public funds to solve a private property matter. The Circuit Court ruling in early November further substantiates this position.” Thexton said the county had just been “dragging their feet” waiting for the circuit court ruling throwing out the BZA’s decision. “They are damaging my property,” said Thexton, who said he has spent more than a year fighting the Benedictine plan. In response to a Freedom of Information request from the Gazette, Dickson said the county had spent $89,769.84 in defense of its approval of Benedictine’s plan of development, a sum that included court reporter costs and paying for counsel for the BZA.
Dickson defended the county’s position in a statement included in the county’s December 17 FOIA response letter. “The County’s position has always been that it properly approved Benedictine’s Plan of Development (“POD”), and that the Board of Zoning Appeals lacked jurisdiction to hear the neighbors’ appeal and that the neighbors lacked standing to appeal Benedictine’s approved POD,” she said. “The Goochland County Circuit Court agreed with the County’s legal arguments. Given that the neighbors have recently indicated their intent to appeal this case further, the County will be forced to continue expending additional time and resources to defend its POD decision,” said Dickson. McSweeney said the appeal process before the Virginia Supreme Court might take almost a year before being resolved.

wrote McSweeney in an email to the Gazette. A party to the suit, River Road homeowner Andrew Thexton, whose property sits a few hundred yards east of the school said he met with county representatives in September to discuss plans to mitigate the drainage problem after the BZA ruled in his favor. “They told me they would make it a quick process,” he said. But after the circuit court ruling, Thexton received a letter dated December 2 from Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson saying the county would take no action to help him. “The runoff issues on your property are

Reaching out to those who came before us By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In just a few days, 2013 will be behind us. Is it just me, or does time seem to be slipping by faster and faster these days? Maybe it’s a function of getting older, or maybe we can blame it on our high speed world, where we keep figuring out how to fit more and more into each day. But the future seems to be slipping into the past at an alarming rate. I can’t be alone on this. And maybe this is why so many of us, both young and old alike, seem enamored by the idea of documentation these days, from the constant stream of Facebook updates to the billions of megapixels that preserve every birthday, wedding, vacation and graduation. It would be a mistake, of course, to say that this is a new phenomenon, even if modern technology has improved the process. After all, most families have a stash of photo albums somewhere filled with carefully pasted, sepia-toned photos of the generations that came before them (ask most of us what possessions we would save in a fire, and those albums are the first things that come to mind). There are

newspaper clippings in there too, nestled in with birthday cards and concert tickets, mementoes of milestones that would otherwise be lost to history. If we’re lucky, each of us will eventually reach an age where the past begins to beckon to us, reaching out to us with stories of lives lived and lessons learned. And, with luck, those old scrapbooks and boxes of memories — and, yes, those thumb drives and digital files — will be there when it does. Someday, when we will tell our children or grandchildren of the things we did, of the people we were, and the lives we led back in 2013, it will probably seem too far in the past to be of any consequence to them. But then, one day, they will find a photo or note and feel that wondrous connection to generations past, understanding that we were once them and they will someday be us. As we put this year in the books, we here at The Goochland Gazette would like to thank you for letting us be a part of so many of your best moments this year, from Little League wins to 100th birthday celebrations. We are so honored to have been a part of this community’s past, and look forward to being part of its future for years to come.

Remembering the ‘Midnight Run’ By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I suppose every family has their own version of my Uncle Dudley. You know, the eccentric one who never quite reached his full potential career-wise, but far-exceeded expectations in the game of life. Dudley treated all of his nieces and nephews like his own kids, but that changed for me when I was 9 years old. I lost my father on Christmas Eve 1960, and, from that day forward, Dudley assumed more than just the role of an uncle. He made long and frequent trips from his Maryland home to guide me through some fairly tough and
confusing months following my Dad’s death, and stayed long after to offer the wisdom normally provided by a father. I would often hear of my aunts and uncles dismay over Dudley’s lifestyle and his “waste of genius.” He attended Georgetown University and was president of his class. Upon graduation, he accepted a big job at the State Department but lasted only two weeks. My mother told me he just couldn’t conform to a 9 to 5 schedule. Dudley drove a Diamond Taxi in Washington, D.C., all of his life, transporting the famous and infamous around the Capitol, and enjoying a job where he was the boss and
the schedule his to set. Condemn it if you will, but it doesn’t sound that bad to me. The point of this lingering description of Dudley does have a destination, and it’s timely. When Christmas rolls around each year, my thoughts return to the many yuletide memories I have with Uncle Dudley. But, one seems almost traditional and represents my most elaborate and consistent meaning of Christmas Eve. No one loved Christmas more than Dudley. He shopped at every nook and cranny in the D.C., area, searching for the perfect gift for each see Midnight Run > page 7
Catching up: Aynsley Fisher and Wayne Dementi Goochland residents Aynsley Fisher and Wayne Dementi recently completed work on their book “Facts and Legends of Goochland County” (see story, page 4). Here, they share with us the seed that got their project started, a few of the things they learned along the way, and the little-known connection between Charles Lindbergh and Goochland. Where did the idea for the book come from and who spearheaded the effort? We joined together in 2006 to create a series of articles under the broad theme of The 35 Mile Drive — a discovery and celebratory trip over the 35 miles of River Road that runs through Goochland. The project was extremely successful, and led to the formation of an initiative which today identifies itself as Visit Goochland. That project made us aware of our special stories, and planted the seed that a wonderful book could be produced to celebrate and reveal the lesser known wonders of the people, places, legends and lore of Goochland County. How long did it take to put the book together and what was the most challenging part? We began this project in 2010, and so it has taken us nearly three years. One of the most challenging parts was deciding which stories to share. Goochland has so many, and we knew that we could only handle 25, or so. We had at least twice Photo by Ken Odor Aynsley Fisher, foreground, and Wayne Dementi signed that many to sort through. copies of their new book,“Facts and Legends of Goochland

Midnight Run continued from > page 6 of his relatives. The result was always unique, trendy and certainly unmatched in any comparison of other gifts received. The process took the eternal procrastinator months or preparation, retrieving just the correct wrapping paper, meticulously scrubbing the 50-cent pieces that would provide his signature to each package for his “kids.” We usually arrived at my grandmother’s house in Maryland on Christmas Eve with a car full of uniformly wrapped presents. Our arrival always found Dudley in what looked like Santa’s workshop set up in my grandmother’s dining room. He wrapped in a methodical, deliberate method, each end folded neatly with tape hidden under the seams. Problem was, the wrapping didn’t end until well after dinner. And, there was still the delivery, the most exciting part of the process in my mind. Around midnight, Dudley and I would venture out into the cold Maryland night, load that cab full of presents, and evoke on a country dash rivaled only by the fat man himself. A quick dart to Southern Maryland where my cousins were still awake and waiting. Another dash to Alexandria and a dropoff for my sister and her kids. Chevy Chase, Arlington, Olney and Rockville and then finally back to Gaithersburg for
the final deliveries around 4 a.m. Each house left us cookies, or cocoa, or candy for our continuing journey. It felt like Christmas. Our last stop was an old Victorian house owned by my Aunt Mary and Uncle John. They were long asleep when we arrived to a warm and toasty living room with a huge decorated tree, still glistening in the dimly lit room. The smell of warm cookies provided our final snack as we climbed back in that Diamond cab for the short drive to my grandmother’s. I climbed into bed exhausted, with, not visions of sugarplums in my head, but another year of fond memories with my Uncle Dudley and our Midnight Run. In my memory bank, those trips are my Christmas, my visions of the season and the joy of my childhood and adolescent years. So, this Christmas, we’ll remember Dudley, a man who knew the true meaning of the season and celebrated it every day of his life. God rest ye merry gentleman! On this Christmas Eve, I suggest you take a minute for yourself and sit down beside a beautifully lit tree and remember your fondest memories of the season. It will take you back and fill you with the warmth that only fond memories can provide. Are those jingling bells I hear outside?

Goodbye to 2013 continued from > page 1 Dogtown Road. More than 50 speakers gave their input during the public hearing, which began shortly after 7 p.m. Most opposed the project, but shortly before 2 a.m. the next morning, the supervisors unanimously approved a revised conditional use permit (CUP) for the range. New Goodwill store opens up shop in Centerville About 50 folks waited in line, anxious to start shopping in early January, as county dignitaries, company associates and Goochland Chamber members cut the ribbon for the grand opening of the Goodwill store and donation center in Centerville. There was no need to urge people to shop, as the parking lot was full and cars lined both sides of St. Matthews Lane near the store. Goodwill Chairman of the Board Richard S. Sutton said the location of Goodwill’s 13th store in central Virginia was ideal. “It gets us in Goochland but also puts us close enough to Henrico County to serve both areas.” Benedictine plan approved, some residents not pleased On Jan. 29, Goochland approved Benedictine College Preparatory Schools’ plan of development (POD) for its move to the River Road Campus in Goochland. “This is it — the last hurdle,” said Benedictine Headmaster Jesse Grapes. “We are very excited to have reached the culmination of this process.” The school already used the site for most of its sports programs, but the idea of moving the academic part there was placed on hold last summer while Benedictine worked to acquire a small piece of property near the entrance to the campus so it could create an easement wide enough to meet state roadway standards. Not everyone was happy about the pending move. A week after the POD was approved, three River Road residents asked the Goochland Board of Supervisors to reverse the county’s
decision. In hand delivered letter to Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, Andrew Thexton, James E. Harris, Jr. and Delano and Berlene Richardson, whose properties are adjacent to the proposed Abbey site, claimed the plan violated county ordinances that require the county Planning Commission to approve any road widening plan and determine that it complies with the county’s comprehensive plan. The letter also claimed the approved plan would cause traffic backups on River Road at the proposed entrance to the school. Schools upgrade security systems after Sandy Hook With the country still reeling from a horrific school shooting in Sandy Hook, Conn., Goochland’s School Board decided to spend up to $60,000 to upgrade security cameras and install a buzzer system at the Goochland High School/Middle School campus. After a presentation by Assistant Superintendent Peter Gretz and Assistant Goochland High School Principal Matt Covington, the Board voted 3-2 to approve moving that amount from the instruction category to operations and maintenance for the upgrades, which were the first two priorities of the School Safety Task Force. Buzzer systems were already in use at the county’s three elementary schools. “Our hope is to do something immediately to improve safety,” said Goochland Superintendent James Lane. Board of Supervisors approve CUP for Dover Hall Despite numerous objections from speakers at its March 5, 2012 public hearing, Goochland supervisors unanimously approved a conditional use permit to allows public and private events and a bed and breakfast operation at Dover Hall, a 30,000 square foot home in Tudor manor design at the intersection of Manakin Road and Millers Lane. Owners Dennis and Cynthia Pryor asked for the CUP for the 56-acre site. Close to 30 citizens spoke at the hear-

Carpenter issued an order prohibiting her from owning companion animals. Annette M. Thompson, 67, was in court for a hearing to determine whether the seizure by Goochland AnimalControl of five dogs from Thompson on April 1, 2012 was warranted. Those five animals were taken to Goochland Animal Clinic and were euthanized after being examined by veterinarian Virginia Dechant. Thompson’s home on Tabscott Road was badly damaged by fire on March 26, 2012, and media attention drew the interest of animal advocates such as Sue Bell, president of Homeward Trails, a Northern Virginia animal rescue organization. Students’ video nets $25K for high school library Is the Goochland Media Center heaven? Well, pretty close to it if you go by senior Russell Gambino’s song that accompanies the video that helped Goochland High School’s library win fourth place in the Follet Challenge. That contest win netted the library a $25,000 award, said librarian Deb Cross, more than the library’s annual budget from the School Board. The contest was sponsored by the Follet School Solutions Group. Supervisors approve McDonald’s in Centerville The golden arches that mark a McDonald’s restaurant will soon be seen in Goochland, after the Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a store at Broadview Shopping Center in Centerville Village. Discussion centered mostly on the hours of operation and whether the business should be required to put up $10,000 that would be used for a possible traffic light at the intersection of Broad Street Road and St. Matthews Lane.
Applicant Clay Grogan asked that the Planning Commission’s recommendation that hours be limited to 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. be reconsidered to allow the store to operate 24 hours a day if need be. Grogan said bright colors had been toned down, a stone exterior similar to the nearby Food Lion would be used, an altered roof line and other measures had been adopted in respons Goochland High students celebrate graduation High school graduation is a big day, so it was only fitting that the Goochland High School Class of 2013 held commencement ceremonies in a big place: the John Paul Jones Arena on the campus of the University of Virginia. Valedictorian, Nicholas Maguire, said in his valedictory address on May 31 that earning a high school diploma is like being given a ticket “onto the Slip ’n’ Slide of life.” “I’m sure there will be many twists and turns, but we have learned the skills that will allow us to succeed and I have no doubt that the Class of 2013 will find success wherever it goes,” he said. “We have been prepared for whatever life throws at us and by virtue of this preparation…we have nothing to fear.” Zoning appeals board deadlocks on Benedictine vote Goochland County’s fourmember Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) deadlocked June 17 on the crucial question of whether it had jurisdiction to consider an appeal of Benedictine Preparatory School’s Plan of Development (POD) for its move to the Abbey location on River Road. Meanwhile, the school and Goochland County agreed on a schedule to begin moving furniture and equipment into the River Road location, beginning on Monday, June 24. Earlier in the day, Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said the county had no issues with

Water project shows county’s cooperation, collaboration State and local officials lauded the benefits that an improved water system will provide Goochland and Powhatan counties, as well as corrections facilities in both jurisdictions. On July 8, state legislators and representatives from Goochland and Powhatan met with Virginia Department of Corrections officials in Goochland to recognize the level of cooperation among the three entities. The project will replace aging DOC waterlines and provide additional water for DOC facilities, Goochland and Powhatan. The project includes replacing an 8-inch water line along U.S. 6 in Goochland, as well as water distribution lines across the James River to Powhatan. Construction on the project began in June. “This is a basic element of infrastructure,” said State Sen. John C. Watkins, R-Powhatan. “It is essential to the future development of Powhatan and of Goochland and they are working together with another state agency that needs this infrastructure as well. So it’s good to have that kind of collaboration working together.” Benedictine opens on time despite controversy On Aug. 16, less than a month before Benedictine College Preparatory School’s planned first day of school, the administration received a very important piece of paper — a certificate of occupancy. According to headmaster Jesse Grapes, the certificate was the culmination of many inspections of the site. When the county building inspector delivered the document, Grapes said staff members “had a little celebration in the lobby.” On Sept. 6, the corps of cadets marched 13 miles from the school’s see Looking back > page 13

Bulldogs host, win annual Holiday Tournament They erased a seven point lead. When Dae Butler stole the ball and raced to the other end for a layup, the Cyclones were within one at 39-38. Johnson quickly sank two foul shots to tie the game at 41. Josh Hayden hit key shots throughout the contest, but none were bigger than his final shot that secured the 48-45 win and resulted in a tournament title Hayden was named MVP for the tournament. “Josh has come a long way,” Gordon said. “There’s a lot left in his tank. He has a lot of potential. He has improved greatly and continues to improve on his game. The sky’s the limit for Josh.” Cephas Harden turned in his usual hard-nosed effort and came down with key rebounds on both ends of the court. “He’s a monster on the boards, and that’s what we need. Hoops around the holidays is becoming a tradition for Goochland. For the second consecutive year, Bulldog coach Preston Gordon and his Bulldogs hosted three visiting teams in a weekend tournament that provided an ample share of exciting basketball. “We try to select teams that fit this format well, and this year’s lineup featured some real good teams,” Gordon said. “We have great sponsors and community support for this event,” the coach said after the final game. Food Lion, Trane, Virginia Artesian, Domino’s, Bella Sicilia, The Place, Big Cheese Pizza, Courthouse Breakfast and Lunch and Hardees all kicked in to make the event a success. “That’s what makes this tournament run,” Gordon said. Goochland opened the tournament Friday night with a win over Louisa, Coach Gordon’s former team and a community that is still close to his heart. “I still have a relationship with them and it was great to see familiar faces from Louisa,” Gordon said. He spent four years coaching the Lions before heading to Goochland. Eastern View defeated West Point in a run and gun shootout, setting the match up with Goochland in the finals on Saturday. The first minutes of the final resembled a three-point shooting contest after Reggie Hobbs launched the first long-range bomb on the Bulldogs first possession. Eastern View’s EJ Hackley was more than up to the task of answering the score, quickly sinking three 3-pointers in the opening minutes. After Eastern jumped to a 9-6 lead, the pace slowed, and

Johnson’s offensive output was off for the tourney, but Gordon said that didn’t affect his role as team leader and quarterback. “He knows his role. He will put shots up if he has the opportunity, but he was almost perfect from the free throw line,” Gordon said. “He knows the little things he has to do. Things will pick back up for him because he is an all district player.” The Bulldogs travel to Alta Vista to take on the defending state champs before beginning their Christmas break. Louisa’s Jermaine Pace, Eastern’s Hackley and West Point’s Jeffrey Guerrant joined Hayden and Jayrell Myles on the All-Tournament team.

Kickers to offer open tryouts in January and March Contributed Report
The Richmond Kickers, the official USL PRO affiliate of D.C. United, are pleased to host open tryouts January 31-February 2, 2014 and March 14-16, 2014 for eligible college seniors, qualified free agents and talented amateur players that are seeking a professional contract. A select number of players will be invited to participate in three days of intense training and scrimmages in front of technical staff at the Kickers state-of-the-art training facility Ukrop Park in Richmond, Virginia. Attendance at the player combine is one of the best ways to ensure that a player’s complete soccer resume and professional evaluation is in
front of key decision makers for the Richmond Kickers. Training sessions will take place in front of professional coaching staff, led by Kickers Director of Soccer, Leigh Cowlishaw, who will be joined by an array of experienced technical staff and former professional players. Most recently, Kickers pro tryouts discovered the 2013 USL PRO Rookie of the Year, Nate Robinson, while past trials have produced such prominent players as Clyde Simms (New England Revolution, D.C. United and U.S. Men’s National Team), Ronnie Pascale (Three-time USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year), Tim Brown (New Zealand National Team) and Robert Ssejjemba (2006 USL-2 MVP
and Ugandan National Team). “Richmond was the first pro team that I played for, playing with the caliber guys that they had there at the time,” commented Simms. “The team was great – the staff and players were very welcoming and professional. I was able to get a good amount of playing time there, which was huge for my development and being able to make it to the next level.” Discovered at the Kickers 2004 combine, Simms spent one season in Richmond before being recognized by D.C. United and the U.S. Men’s National Team. Simms appeared in 31 games for 2,571 minutes with the Kickers and started more games than any other rookie that season (28).
Since then, he made 182 appearances over seven seasons, posting over 13,000 minutes, in a D.C. United uniform before signing with the New England Revolution following the 2011 campaign. Simms is one of 24 D.C. United players who played with the Kickers over the past two decades, with the roster of former Kickers players also including 2011 Major League Soccer MVP Dwayne De Rosario, Mike Burke, Jeff Causey, Ben Crawler, 2013 USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year Andrew Dykstra, Brian Kamler, Taylor Kemp, Collin Martin, Mike McGinty, Michael Seaton, Conor Shanosky, Casey Townsend, Richie Williams, Mark Simpson and Robert
Ssejjemba. Players who have featured with the Kickers on loan include Brian Carroll, John DiRaimondo, Justin Mapp, Andy Metcalf, Bryan Namoff, Anthony Peters, Long Tan and Ethan White. In franchise history, 22 players have progressed from the Richmond Kickers into Major League Soccer. Interested players should please submit an application and $150 registration fee by January 21 or March 4. Space is limited and applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. Registration fees are non-refundable. Application fees increase to $175 after the registration deadline. Attendance at all sessions is required.

The Richmond Rim Riders wheelchair basketball team will be rolling into the Goochland High School gymnasium on Jan. 4 to engage in a friendly game of hoops with a few of our own local hardwood heroes. Well, maybe “friendly” isn’t quite the right word. “It is a viciously competitive sport,” said Rim Rider Stan Corn, who has been playing wheelchair basketball for over two decades. Corn, who at 67 is one of the most senior competitive players in the U.S., said most people who are not familiar with the sport often think they are coming to watch something akin to the Special Olympics, a feel good kind of event where self-esteem building and good sportsmanship generally rule the day. “Then they see us,” Corn said, “and they leave saying ‘Oh my God.’” Wheelchair basketball is similar to the standard game in most ways, with a few tweaks to accommodate the fact that the athletes play in a seated position. A travelling penalty in wheelchair basketball, for example, is called when an athlete touches his or her wheels more than twice after receiving or dribbling the ball. Corn says most able-bodied athletes, even those who usually excel on the basketball court,
quickly find out that playing from a seated position is a whole new ballgame. Most inevitably realize that shooting without the use of their legs is much more difficult than they imagined, Corn said, or they overcompensate by shooting too hard. Dribbling while pushing a chair is also particularly challenging for novices. Even when their opponents do manage to get a few points on the board, Corn said, the games remain hopelessly lopsided. To help remedy this, the wheelchair players will sometimes allow their opponents to bring more players onto the court, or flip the score at halftime. Trash talk is not unheard of: hearing a rumor that a certain school superintendent may have been diligently practicing his game from a borrowed wheelchair in preparation for the match-up, Corn barely stifled a laugh. When it comes to taking on the Rim Riders, he said, “You can practice all you want. You’re still going to look foolish.” After taking on players and coaches from the Goochland High School Boy’s Basketball team, as well as some local law enforcement officials, the Rim Riders will play a doubleheader against the North Carolina Triangle Thunder. The first game begins at noon, and this event is free to the public. For more information, contact Goochland County High School at (804) 556-5322.

Couple gives largest-ever gift to Christmas Mother This month, the Goochland Christmas Mother Association received the largest individual donation in its history when Maryhelene and Herbert Seal presented the organization with a check for $20,000. “The greatest gift at Christmas is the gift of giving,” said Mr. Seal. “We feel that giving back to the community in which we live is very important.” The couple also challenged others in the community to give what they could to help the program in its mission of offering assistance to less fortunate families. Ken Odor, Ben Orcutt and Bill McKelway contributed to this report.

County rises to the challenge, so woman chops her hair By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Nelson-Lyda
A good friend might be described as someone who would give you the shirt off his back, but Elizabeth NelsonLyda found a different way to show her commitment: by giving the hair off her head. Nelson-Lyda, who serves as the chair of the nonprofit Goochland Educational
Foundation, recently donated 22 inches of her hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that helps provide wigs for children who suffer long-term hair loss due to cancer treatment or other medical conditions.
