Goochland High School grad follows his passion for biomechanics to London lab

Quiz a group of average twenty-somethings on the anatomical quirks of ostrich legs and you will likely get a roomful of befuddled stares. But ask 2009 Goochland High School graduate Kyle Chadwick about either of those subjects and prepare to be schooled. Chadwick, who earned his degree in

Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia this year, is now working as a biomechanics research technician at the University of London’s Royal Veterinary College. The Goochland County School Board has approved a new strategic plan, outlining the vision and goals for the division. “Our new strategic plan is inspiring and will give us clear direction on how to maximize the potential of every student,” superintendent Dr. James Lane said. “No one person can forge these enhancements. It will be a team effort and I am proud to be a part of the team — as well as a future GCPS parent — that will be a part of continuing our path towards excellence for all children.” The plan was presented by members of the division leadership, teachers and commuLane nity members during the school board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Dec. 10, 2013. The board voted unanimously to approve the plan. The plan, organized and prepared by John Hendron, GCPS Supervisor of Instructional Technology, includes three comprehensive goals and took into consideration feedback of all stakeholders that Goochland was ready for a focus beyond standardized achievement tests. Joe Kunkel, former CarMax executive, donated his consulting expertise and helped the leadership organize and develop the plan. The slogan “Prepared For Life Through Deeper Learning” captures the spirit of the first goal. “We believe school should not only prepare students for a successful life after high school,” Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Stephen Geyer said. “We feel a sense of urgency to engage students such that their love for learning and ability to accept and meet challenges is maximized.” Geyer was recently named Virginia’s Curriculum Leader of the Year and led the effort to remodel the see Schools > page 17

Specifically, they are examining what purpose kneecaps serve; why they exist in many animals, but not in others; and how they develop. In short, Chadwick likes to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Very few people care about kneecaps as much as us.â&#x20AC;? The story of just how Chadwick made the transition from studying mechanical engineering to the biomechanics of animals â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and how he made it from the U.S. to the U.K. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is a series of happy coincidences, fueled in part by his natural curiosity. Though his major was mechanical engineering, Chadwickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest in biomechanics was piqued early on during his time at UVa. when he wandered into the office of a professor who was doing research in the field. Though he had visited the office to speak with another professor, Chadwick began asking questions, wanting to learn more â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so much more, in fact, that he ended up working in that professorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lab. As it turned out, the professor Chadwick was working with had previously done research at Stanford University with Dr. John Hutchinson, the head of the group

studying animal locomotion and evolutionary biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to gain experience in a group that deals with animals, and the group in London has a very good reputation in the biomechanics world,â&#x20AC;? Chadwick said. These days, Chadwick spends his days poring over academic papers; working on computer models; and building and testing lab equipment. Though he loves the work, there were a few hurdles he had to overcome. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The most challenging part is transitioning from an engineering environment to a primarily science and biology environment,â&#x20AC;? Chadwick said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are certain knowledge gaps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; things like anatomy vocabulary and evolutionary thinking â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that I am slowly closing.â&#x20AC;? The one thing he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to worry about? Getting bored any time soon, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am definitely fascinated by all the huge variety of animals that different people in our lab are studying at any given time,â&#x20AC;? Chadwick said, including pigeons, salamanders, crocodiles and, of course, ostriches. With as many animals â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and kneecaps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; as there are left to study, Chadwick said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;there is almost always something new and exciting going on.â&#x20AC;?

January 2, 2014 Roger W. Hix HIX, Roger William, 70, of Mineral, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, on Dec. 15, 2013. He was born on March 5, 1943, and was raised by his loving grandparents, Charles and Hix Nettie Hix of Mineral. He is survived by the mother of his children, Barbara J. Hix; his daughter, Lisa M. Hix-Bowling and her husband, Wayne; his son, Charles M. Hix and his wife, Tammy; his granddaughters, Ashley N. Rigsby and her husband, Aren, and Brooke E. Hix; two half brothers, four half sisters; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; and his beloved cat, Cali. “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Cor. 4:18. Daddy represented life, a simple life. A life he loved that included a day of fishing or hunting with his friends, a night out on the dance floor, good food and good friends. Daddy was a kind man with a huge heart and will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 at Salem Christian Church, 4023 Paynes Mill Rd. in Bumpass. Goochland, Va., passed away December 22, 2013. Preceded in death by her husband, Herman L. Marks; and sons, Tommy and Steve Marks, she is survived by her daughter, Jane (Ty) Martin; and son, Corky (Terri) Marks; one sister, Sue Plungie; nine grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held on Dec. 26 at Smyrna Baptist Church. Interment church cemetery. Visitation followed after the funeral in the church Social Hall. William Parrish PARRISH, William B. “Buck,” 78, of Manakin-Sabot, Va., went home to be with the Lord on December 23, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia S. Parrish; two children, Glenn Parrish (Sandra), Lawrence Pa r r i s h ( Wa n d a ) ; three grandchildren, two Parrish great-grandchildren; and his beloved and faithful, “Bleu.” He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Taylor (John), Anne Bowles (Allen), Brenda Denton (David) and Betty Martinez; one nephew, three nieces and many friends. John Redd REDD, John Lawrence “Larry,” of Mechanicsville, passed away Dec. 27, 2013. Born April 20, 1952 in Radford, he was preceded in death by his father, John Burton Redd Jr., a biologist who worked for Virginia Game and I n l a n d Fisheries, whose work Redd helped open military bases across America to hunters and sportsmen. Larry is survived by his mother, Cheri Redd; sons, John “Corey” Redd and Robert Redd; grandson, John Nicholas Redd; two brothers, Chip Redd (Glenna) and Jay Redd (Kathy); two nieces and two nephews. Larry attended Randolph Macon Military Academy and Powhatan High School, where he won the All-District Center award while playing football. He became a master carpenter, owning his own business. He worked for Henrico school systems in building structure maintenance, eventually becoming a Henrico commercial building inspector, a job he was very proud of because he protected people’s lives, such as a fireman or police that enter compromised buildings. He trained and did ride-alongs with the Hanover Sheriff’s Department. He was a strong supporter and life member of the NRA. He loved to fish and hunt. He loved watching and hunting black

bears. He was a guide to wildlife photographers who won awards for their films. He worked for the Virginia Shad Restoration Project. He served in the National Guard as an explosives expert. Project brings students together, brightens courtyard Contributed Report

Last September, about 30 seniors visited with the Randolph Elementary School third graders to take a look at the recently renovated courtyard, have lunch together and share ideas for similar

improvements to the high school courtyard. The event also brought about a second visit in October, in which the students worked together to create new learning spaces in the courtyard. “The results have been absolutely amazing,” said county school superintendent Dr. James Lane. “The courtyard has been completely transformed and lasting relationships established. This has given our high school students a tremendous lesson in leadership.” The Randolph courtyard now includes a new space created for a rock garden, several new murals, freshly sanded benches, and an enhanced entryway. “About 60 students worked all day to make these transformations possible,” said Randolph Elementary principal, Sandra Crowder. “Their collaboration was impressive and I cannot wait to see what happens the next time they get together.” The second half of the project will find the high school students taking what they have learned from the third graders to design an improved courtyard for the high school. “I am impressed by the collaboration between the high school students and the third graders,” said Bratton, an environmental science teacher from Goochland High School.

The project offered them a chance to partner with students from Goochland High School, who worked with them on both the design and execution of the plans. The high school students are now in the process of sprucing up their own courtyard.

“They enjoyed working with each other and reading together.” The community invested heavily in the project, receiving donations of materials from local business and many hours of volunteer service from those who offered their skills and physical labor. The teachers involved learned a great deal as well. “What an incredible experience to see 8-year-olds and 18-year-olds collaborate together, inspire each other, and become great friends!” said Gates, a third grade teacher from Randolph

Elementary. “When Mrs. Yearout-Patton and I first began throwing out ideas about a project to unite elementary and high school students, we had no idea how it would play out. Once our students met for the first time, it became clear that each group valued the opportunity and the relationships being built. I believe that our students will remember this project for years to come. It may even encourage several to pursue a career in education.” To Yearout-Patton, a government teacher at Goochland High School, the

project illustrated the school system’s ongoing commitment to its mission. “It is one thing to quote our vision: ‘Inspiring and preparing the next generation to make a positive impact.’” YearoutPatton said. “It is another to see it implemented with hard work and support from stakeholders. Our students, teachers, leaders, and parents embodied the latter by supporting and executing the collaboration between RES and GHS. I am very thankful for their hard work and successful ongoing project.”

Goochland High School senior, Katie Zohab, wanted to do something special for the residents of Envoy at the Meadows, in Gum Spring. So she did. Having spent considerable time volunteering with the residents and finishing up an internship at Goochland Elementary, she recruited some other

high school students and the elementary students with whom she had been working and organized a holiday party. But she didn’t stop there. She sent personal invitations to the school board, board of supervisors and school division leaders. The result? Students, parents, local officials gathered to celebrate the holidays, interact

— and even carol — with the residents. “When I first had the idea for the Adopt a Grandparent project, I thought it was just going to be a few friends and me going to the nursing home, and bringing select residents a few Christmas presents,” Zohab said. “However, as word got out, the project grew and I could not be happier.”

Use caution when telling others’ stories By Roslyn Ryan Editor

After reports surfaced that reality television star Phil Robertson had managed to wedge his foot firmly in his mouth concerning certain facts about black history, the idea of wading into the debate at all seemed fairly ridiculous. Duck Dynasty is, after all, a reality show, a program in a genre that boasts just a shade more credibility — and often less entertainment value — than professional wrestling. Furthermore, I have never seen the show, couldn’t tell a duck call from a dog whistle, and didn’t read the interview that started the whole imbroglio in the first place, all of which disqualifies me from weighing in on the controversy with much credibility. And yet . . . Steering clear of the arguments about free speech and what is and isn’t protected by the First Amendment, the controversy still struck me as a fairly decent example of the trouble that can ensue when one person attempts to tell another’s story. In the case of Robertson, to suggest — even in passing — that African-Americans were happier in the days of the Jim Crow South, was to anoint him-

self with an omniscience people on both sides of the debate should find questionable. Whether he meant to or not, Robertson effectively served notice to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who still carry horribly painful memories of that time that their own stories were not valid. The controversy also highlights why the continuing efforts to help historically disadvantaged groups tell their own stories are so important. As with one local group’s own efforts to preserve and share the stories of those who attended Goochland’s Second Union Rosenwald School — one of thousands of such schools dedicated to evening the educational playing field for AfricanAmerican students in the first half of the 20th century — capturing the stories of those who fought against injustice, in their own words, is a way to ensure that we never go back there again. In the end, it’s not about liberal vs. conservative, Red State vs. Blue State or A&E versus a family of bearded, duck call millionaires. The real story here is about the importance of getting just that: the real story. In this case, it wasn’t Robertson’s to tell.

The pad I refer to was installed for the county-wide heavy duty washing machine, for washing of fire gear by all members. After having the washing machine uncrated for two years in the basement of the fire administration building, it was decided to install the machine at Company 5, which is centrally located in the county. The next problem was: what does it takes to anchor the washing machine? A member of Company 5, Mrs. Leonard, took on the task of finding this information out. She contacted the manufacturer and got, in detail, what was needed to anchor the machine. Mrs. Leonard contacted several companies in the area, and was able to get most of the supplies donated. A new you for the new year? Maybe By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I always approach New Year’s columns with a healthy amount of skepticism. The year-end wrap-ups have become so cliché, tired and predictable it almost insults my instincts as a journalist to opine on such overworked subject matter. By now, you will have found out how to identify your New Year’s resolutions, how to take action to eliminate the bad things in your life and the importance of persistence in overcoming obstacles in life. Really? At my age, I’m not sure I’m buying into any of the life-changing experiences associated with the New Year, but I do admire those who continue to try. I have a friend that quits smoking every New Year’s Day;

another who heads to the gym first thing on New Year’s Day. And who’s to say those efforts won’t one day pay off. But, for the huddled mass that is most of us, life probably won’t change much with 2014’s arrival, and many rejected the idea of making surely unkeepable promises. It’s not that we don’t think the effort is important. Making a New Year’s resolution to eliminate a negative in your life is a sure sign of hope and optimism. It means we continually try to improve ourselves no matter how futile our efforts. And, remember, some of those resolutions will take hold and grow into new lifestyles or relationships, renewed beginnings for the ones who dared to challenge themselves. As frustrating as they may be, resolutions are a way of inventorying our lives, keeping

the good and throwing away the bad. So, I suppose when I think of the New Year in terms of hope and redemption, that’s sort of my resolution. Lord knows there are plenty of things in my life I could work on, and a slew of bad habits I’d be better off without. But, I’m thinking New Year’s is more about what we should do rather than what we shouldn’t, emphasizing on how we can do things better or improve something in our lives. But, honestly, that’s yearround work that requires everyday attention, most true in my case. So, I’ll leave the advice on how to keep your resolutions or the timely commentators on today’s hottest topics to columnists more well versed, current and talented than me.

Former Ole Miss and NFL quarterback Archie Manning said he once asked his father what he thought he might be good at in life. The old man told the son he’d be good at almost anything he wanted to do. He also told the young quarterback that being a good guy was equally or more important. Those seem like appropriate words of wisdom to open a New Year — a fresh start on a continuing journey of enlightenment. So, this will replace the column that sits half finished focused on the top stories and hottest celebrities of 2013, which may and could appear at a later date. But, on the new dawn of a new year, these thoughts seemed more appropriate. It hit me like a wrecking ball.

After all was set in place, cement was delivered and Mrs. Leonard and family wheel barrowed cement into the frame. Mrs. Leonard stayed and made sure the forms held in place and anchors stayed in correct position while the cement dried. After the cement hardened and the surface was smoothed out, this part of the project was complete. Mrs. Leonard called her district chief to look over the project. When the district chief saw the work, he agreed that it looked good and was suitable. He brought up a concern that, with a project this big, why nobody had signed the work-to show pride in their work. Mrs. Leonard has high regard for the district chief, and with

this encouragement she proceeded to sign the cement with her family’s name. Again, in one and a half years, nobody brought up the fact there was an issue. Recently, in a meeting that Chief MacKay had, one of the issues he brought up was the Leonard name on the cement pad. After finding out there was an issue, the name was chiseled out that day and covered with spackle to cover the hole. With all that being said, the Leonard family had no malice or ill content toward anyone in the organization. I hope everyone in Goochland Fire-Rescue, paid or volunteer, will accept this invitation to please come to Company 5, visit and feel free to wash your gear at any time. Salem Christian School middle school and high school students recently returned from their annual Fall Retreat at Watermarks Camp in Scottsville. Each year the students look forward to three days and two nights of bonding with each other and with their teachers. Students raved about “gaga” ball (a variation of dodge ball), the “blob” they jumped onto in the pond, the rifle and archery ranges, paintball, high ropes and obstacle courses, human foosball and many more fun activities.

One of the most consistent remarks heard from the kids upon return is “I wish we could stay longer!,” or even “I wish I lived there!” Seventh grader Harrison said his all-time favorite is gaga ball, while sixth grader Lauren said the duct tape pranks at night were unforgettable. Yuri, a Japanese exchange student at Salem for the school year, said it was an overall great time for her. hen it comes to our relationship, my treadmill and I have always been somewhat dysfunctional. Call it a “love-hate” kind of thing, or blame it on our differing levels of commitment, but we seem to have fallen into an unhealthy — yet unbreakable — cycle. And it starts anew every January. “Come back to me,” my treadmill calls out from the back room (ok, the junk room) of our house. “I think we can make it work this time.” Perhaps it is the lingering guilt from too many holiday helpings, or the aphrodisiacal effect of all those workout-themed commercials that start running this time of year. Whatever it is, it is always enough to make me consider giving it another go. “I knew you would come back!” my treadmill says, as I grudgingly remove the clothes and cast-off cooking appliances that have buried it since last year. I lace up my shoes, put on some music, and vow that things will be different. They never are. By mid-January, the excuses begin. By February, we are hanging by a thread. By March, we have broken up.

So why, oh why, does this keep happening? New Year’s resolutions may have varying degrees of success, but even those people who find it difficult to keep their resolutions year after year still tend to make a new resolution once the hour of midnight chimes. Why? Because, as we all know, success is possible. And the benefits of adopting better habits — no matter in what area of your life — can be truly life-changing. Though it may seem as though resolutions are made to be broken, resolutions can be the first step many people take toward a happier and healthier life, making them more than just a silly annual exercise in empty promises. A common hurdle many people must clear when making a New Year’s resolution is choosing

the resolution itself. Resolving to become a millionaire in the next 12 months is likely unrealistic, as is taking on the same resolution you made last year that proved unsuccessful. Before making a New Year’s resolution this year, consider the following tips aimed at helping you choose a resolution that has a chance to be successful. • Make it something you’re likely to enjoy. Resolving to lose weight is perhaps the most popular New Year’s resolution every year. Though there’s no way to measure how many people make this resolution and stick with it, it’s safe to assume many people fall short of their weight-loss goal. Two days before Santa delivered presents and Christmas cheer to well-behaved boys and girls across the globe, Benedictine handed the Henrico Warriors the basketball equivalent of a bucket full of coal: an 81-52 mollywopping in the Richmond TimesDispatch Invitational title game. It was the Cadets second consecutive RT-D Invitational title. The game was a rematch of last year’s title bout. “I expected a lot of effort and energy out of them,” said Benedictine head coach Ryan Marable of his team. “The Siegel Center is a great venue and you only get so many guaranteed opportunities to play for championships. So you might as well go out and give a championship effort.” “They were able to do that from the get-go,” he added. “Championship effort” is an apt way to describe the highlevel of play that the Cadets were able to sustain throughout the contest. Led by Robert Johnson, Benedictine opened the game on a 13-4 run that the Warriors were never able to recover from. The score was never tied and the lead never switched hands. Simply put, the Cadets showed neither peace nor good will to their public school opponents on this Christmas Eve’s eve. At the core of the Cadets offensive tour de force was a lethal three-point game. Josh Bailey — a modest presence on the court until he began firing off long-distance shots — was potent from behind the arch. He sunk five of six attempts and finished with 17 points. The venerable Johnson finished with a game-high 21 points before graciously accepting the tournament MVP trophy at

True to character, Marable, who is in his first season as the Cadets head coach, sung Henrico’s praises despite the lopsided final. “Henrico’s young, they’re going to be really good towards the end of the year,” he said. “Coach Harmon does a great job with those guys. That’s not the same Henrico that people are going to see later in the season.” Not that the Cadets are going to cross paths with the Warriors later this season. Benedictine is a private institution that competes in Division I of the VISAA. Henrico is a public school that plays in group 5A — the second highest classification in the Virginia High School League. Both teams will be defending state championships in 2013-14. “Unfortunately, the public schools can only play a certain amount of games, and a

good portion of those games are conference games,” said Marable. “So it kind of hurts them to schedule private school games. But it’s good to play in this tournament where you know you’re going to get at least two public school games.” After the game, Marable stood on the court in a nearly cleared-out Siegel Center and tried to put the victory into its proper context. “It’s good for our tradition. It’s good for our guys when they’re out in the community and they can say ‘We won the TD again,’” he explained. “It’s good for the alumni to have some bragging rights.” “It’s just good,” he added. Then he proudly strolled into the lockerroom to celebrate the biggest victory of his young career with the players that made it happen.

Inaugural Big River Rivalry a grand success Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

For Benedictine High School quarterback Bryce Hamilton, the most memorable aspect of playing in the Big River Rivalry All-Star game was, plain and simple, being teammates with some of the area’s most venerable talent. “To see what some of the great plays these guys make in practice is remarkable,” said Hamilton. “And then, for them to transfer that talent to the game field, is something that I’ll remember for a long time.” The first annual Big River Rivalry, which featured the crème de la crème of Richmond-area pigskinners, was played four days before Christmas at Randolph Macon College in front of an enthusiast group of 2,929 fans. Ninety-four players from 36 Richmond area schools were split up into two teams, the North and the South. The North squad won, 35-34, on a last-second blocked field goal that sent the players into an impassioned celebration that belied the fact that they were playing in what was essentially an exhibition game. Goochland High School head coach Joe Fowler was at the helm for the North squad. Earlier in the year, he was named the Virginia High School football Coach of the Year by USA Today. So coaching in the first edition of the Big River Rivalry was a dignified way to end what has been an outstanding professional year for the Bulldogs’ leader. This wasn’t Fowler’s first rodeo when it comes to allstar games. He’s coached in the VHSL equivalent of the Pro Bowl in the past. But the one major difference between that game and the Big River Rivalry was preparation time. He had 10 allotted

practice days for the VHSL allstar game. This time around, he had only five practice sessions to get his players, many of whom may have been out of game shape, prepared to compete against the best talent Richmond had to offered. Fowler said having only five two-hour practices “made it a challenge to keep everybody organized,” but that it all the hard work came to fruition

under the sun on Day Field. “It was a great atmosphere on game day and the weather was ideal,” said Fowler. “Of course, for the game to be decided on the last play was also very exciting. It was also great to see the kids from Goochland get out there and represent themselves so well during the game.” Those “Goochland kids” Fowler is referring to are

They teamed up with Hamilton, who logged significant playing time under center, and numerous other top-notch players to help the North secure a one point victory. The way in which the teams were divided was

simple: players from schools North of the James River came together to form the North squad (dressed in blue), while players from institutions south of the James formed the South squad (dressed in white). It wasn’t a battle for the James River, per se, but divvying the teams up in such a manner allowed the Richmond Touchdown Club to slap the catchy moniker “Big River Rivalry” on their product. And, based on the results, that clever selling point seemed to work pretty well. Though it was technically the first day of winter, the weather could not have been less reflective of the season. Cloud cover was non-existent, temperatures rose into the low 70s, and sun warmed the recently installed grassy turf on Day Field. Tee shirts were the norm instead of the exception. Adding to the fanfare was the Atlee Raiders cheering squad, which was out in full force to rile up the North fans. The Highland Springs marching band did their part as well, supplying the necessary brass instruments and percussion. All-in-all, the atmosphere was festive and light-hearted with a dash of competitive flare: a perfect combination that undoubtedly satisfied the Richmond Touchdown Club, which was looking to prove that a regional all-star game could succeed on a grand level. Across the field from Fowler’s squad was Tabyus Taylor, the South team’s nimble starting quarterback. A Virginia Tech commit who is expected to be a jack-ofall-trades with the Hokies, he finished with 26 touchdowns and 177 yards rushing yards per game in 2013. But the flashy young gunslinger saved his best performance of the season for the packed crowd

at Day Field. He accounted for four touchdowns — two passing, one rushing, and one receiving — while throwing for 173 yards and rushing for 69 more. It was a classic Taylor performance, and he was named MVP of the North squad. Hamilton was impressed by Taylor’s dominance. “He was unstoppable today,” he said. “He’s just an incredible athlete.” Blocking for Taylor was Powhatan offensive lineman Spencer Dowdle, who had been a foe of Taylor’s during the regular season. On Sept. 13, Dowdle’s Indians intercepted Taylor three times on their way to a 30-24 comeback victory over Taylor’s Blue Devils. In addition to Taylor, Dowdle had the pleasure of sharing a uniform with several other players he had suited up against during the regular season — an experience he cited as the highlight of his Big River Experience. “Playing on the same team as a few guys [Hopewell’s Tyler Smith, Midlothian’s Jay Klein and Carl Courter] that we competed against during the regular season was pretty memorable,” said Dowdle. “being able to talk about the game and remember going against each other was awesome.” When asked to describe the experience in one word, Dowdle responded with “motivating.” As a parting gift, Dowdle, who is planning on playing football in college, offered a sentiment that likely encapsulates the thoughts and feelings of many players who competed in a game that may soon become a Central Virginia winter tradition. “I would like to thank my coaches for helping me become the player I am today,” he said.
