West Creek site identified as prime data center spot
Let the robot wars begin!
Area’s selection by Dominion based on access to fiber network, topography among other factors By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A 199-acre site in Goochland has been certified by Dominion Virginia Power as a premier data center location, offering the county another asset to spur economic development. The site, located in the West Creek Business Park, was selected after a study by the Timmons Group determined the site has the appropriate space, topography and geology to support the needs of a potential data center, as well as access to a robust fiber network, large capacity water and sewer service and an excellent transportation network. “These factors, and especially highly reliable, low-cost electric service, are essential for companies in the process of siting and developing data centers,” Dickson said Paul Koonce, chief operating officer of Dominion Virginia Power. “Virginia is one of the most active data center markets in the nation because we meet these requirements exceptionally well. In fact, there are already dozens of data centers in Virginia and 70 percent of the internet traffic in the U.S. runs through our backyard.” Commending West Creek developAlvarez ers for seeking the certification, county administrator Rebecca Dickson said she was pleased with what the designation will offer West Creek, a development that includes Capital One, Performance Food Group, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. “West Creek Business Park being named a certified data center serves to enhance the visibility and marketabilsee Data center > 2

ity of an already sought-after Business Park.,” said Dickson. “Specifically, it signals to data center prospects that initial due diligence has been completed and allows them to know immediately that infrastructure exists in West Creek to serve them.” Sites already certified include Watkins Centre in Chesterfield and White Oak Technology in Henrico. Virginia is consistently ranked as one the top states in the nation for business development and expansion. Data centers are among the most sought-after developments because they bring in high-tech businesses, provide jobs and a solid tax base and put minimum stress on local infrastructure and the environment. “Data centers are indeed a highly valuable asset for Virginia, and our corporate
clients continue to grow and invest here due to favorable tax policies, ample fiber, reliable power, and competitive cost of doing business,” said Martin Briley, president and chief executive officer of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. “We applaud our partners at Dominion for implementing this robust certification program accelerating marketability of this and other sites that, in turn, significantly enhances Virginia’s competitiveness to attract additional data centers. We look forward to working together to ensure Virginia remains at the top of the list of consideration for our data center clients.” To District 2 representative Manuel Alvarez, West Creek’s new designation will be particularly useful in highlighting what he says he and his fellow board members have known for some time. “I believe this certification provides an excellent marketing tool for economic develop-
ment in West Creek,” Alvarez said. “Although we knew the required infrastructure existed

Sometimes, learning isn’t ‘one size fits all’ “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” Jiddu Krishnamurti By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Last week, as many of us were sorting out our New Year’s resolutions and organizing ourselves for the year ahead, a group of Goochland County students were preparing to embrace a challenge all their own. On Saturday, the Goochland High School robotics team gathered together to get the details on this year’s state challenge and begin planning the machine they will use to make a run at the annual FIRST Robotics Competition. For the next six weeks, these students will pore over designs and details, fine-tuning their project and honing their design skills. They also will, whether they notice or not, probably be learning just as much as they might sitting in a classroom staring at a textbook. In Goochland, the Robotics Club it is just one of many, many activities and programs aimed at helping all students

find ways to explore and interact with the world around them. There was a time, not too many years ago, when “going to school” didn’t offer nearly the options it does today. These days, students can take advantage of opportunities in career and technical education many of their parents could not have dreamed of. Because of these programs, many students who might otherwise dread going to school every day have found a way to get involved, to connect with their peers and – even if they don’t realize it — to fall in love with learning. Talking to Dr. James Lane, superintendent of Goochland County Public Schools, and members of his staff several months ago, it was obvious that this approach to learning is something they take very seriously. We here at The Goochland Gazette applaud the county’s school leaders, teachers, aides and everyone else who works tirelessly every day to help provide an engaging learning environment for students. It may not be as complicated as building a righteous robot, but the impact it will have on their futures is beyond measure.

Letter to the Editor Contest offers kids chance to show skills, earn money for their school Dear Editor, My name is Maya Jandzinski and I am 8 years old. I attend Goochland Elementary School. Last spring I was the second place winner in the US Kids Magazine Cover Contest. The prize was a $1,000 donation to my schools art department. I received some prizes as well. I got some gift cards, art DVDs and instructional books, a jewelry craft kit, and some books signed by the authors and illustrators. I was very happy to win this money for Goochland Elementary because I think art is very fun and it is an important part of school. Last year’s theme was “My best day.” I knew right away what I wanted to draw. I drew a picture of myself snorkeling on our vacation to Aruba. That was the first time I had ever done that and it was so amazing. This year’s theme is “If I Had a Superpower.” I want to let other kids know about this contest and encourage them to enter this year. You don’t have to have a subscription to the magazine. You just go to the website and print off a sheet to draw your picture on. The due date is in February. The first place winner gets $1,500, second place gets $1,000, and third gets $500 for their school’s art department. There are three different age categories and so there are nine winners in all. I love art and I love drawing. I like to enter contests once in a while because I try really hard to do my best work and I am always proud of my drawings. Sometimes I win, most of the time I don’t, but I always have fun. I am going to enter the contest again this year. This time I am hoping for first place! I would be

Justice in America: A crapshoot at best By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Justice in America is about as fickle as a 15-year-old girl playing spin the bottle. Last month, a Texas youth was convicted of manslaughter for his role in a drunken driving spree that claimed the lives of four people and seriously injured two others. The youth’s attorney defended his client by claiming an almost unbelievable psychological condition called affluenza. The bug-sounding affliction applies to teens of wealthy parents who have lived their lives absent of rules or limits, never learning the difference between right and
wrong, and never suffering the consequences of bad behavior. Apparently, the judge bought it and sentenced the boy to a sixmonth stay at a tony rehab center in California and 10 years of probation. Families of the victims were shocked and appalled at the lenient sentence. Apparently, the massive efforts to alleviate drunk driving in other states are not applicable on the West Coast. Newspapers regularly carry articles describing drunk drivers who kill and receive long prison sentences, but one stands out in my mind that seems eerily similar to this one. I’m thinking back to 1989 when
a 29-year-old waitress on the Outer Banks downed two Margaritas, a couple of 100 proof shots, and then took off for a concert in Williamsburg. She never made it. Neither did four youths visiting the Outer Banks from New Jersey. Missy Marvin, a Nags Head competitive surfer and waitress, plowed through a yellow light and slammed into a Cavalier, killing all but one of its passengers. The four deaths shocked the community, and exposed a pattern of leniency toward the pretty server on several previous occasions where drunk driving was reduced to reckless driving. She paid for all those sins in a see Justice > page 7

Justice continued from > 6 Manteo courtroom where a jury found her guilty on four counts of manslaughter, and a judge promptly sentenced her to four 15-year terms to be served consecutively. That’s 60 years with no parole for the now middle-aged previous non-felon. It was obvious the community took out their rage in that small courtroom, and legal experts across
the country condemned the repressive sentence. It didn’t matter. At best, Marvin had driven drunk and carelessly taken the lives of four human beings. While a prison term was appropriate in this case, the length of the sentence was, in my opinion, excessive and vindictive. In the California case, four lives didn’t have as much value for the judge, and he reserved the majority of his anger for the parents who gave

No one would defend the actions of either of these criminals, but I would certainly question the fairness of such inequity in our legal system. In my mind, neither one of the convicted felons received fair nor equitable justice, something guaranteed to each and every one of us. Outraged? We should be.

Parks and Rec series offers help preparing for ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ By Korey Hughes Contributing Writer
The public’s undying interest in the undead is the inspiration behind Goochland Parks, Recreation and Facilities’ upcoming series of “How To Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and Other Natural Disasters” classes. The courses will teach local residents survival skills that they can use in a variety of life-threatening situations. The first seminar, “Zombie Series Class — First Aid,” will happen from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Goochland Sports Complex Classroom B at 1800 Sandy Hook Road in Goochland. Jessica Kronberg, program coordinator for community recreation, planned the series with Rebekah Reynolds, program coordinator for athletics and wellness. Kronberg explained why she thinks that zombies have so many fans at the moment. “They’re everywhere these days, and they’re popular because it’s all about the unknown,” Kronberg said. “Every show you watch has a different cause for how they came to be, so it’s inter-
esting to think about how you might react if the world suddenly changed in that way.” In fact, the idea of offering a series of zombie-inspired survival seminars came about during a chance conversation that members of the Goochland Parks, Recreation and Facilities staff had during a meal. Kronberg admitted that she didn’t take the concept seriously at first, but after she and Reynolds discussed it further, pursuing the idea made sense. “Actually, we were at breakfast one day after the Virginia Recreation and Park Society Annual Conference (in September 2013), and somebody threw the idea out there, and we were just joking about it at first,” Kronberg said. “But, then, Rebekah and I started talking about doing it because it catches people’s eyes.” Goochland resident and former Marine Jesse Todd will teach the courses. Of course, Todd’s military background makes him a survival expert, but he also knows a bit about zombie attacks since he designed the targets that appeared at the Goochland
County Fall Festival’s shooting range back in October. “He has been teaching our NRA home firearms and Virginia boating safety courses, and he is very engaging,” Kronberg said. “So, these will not be boring classes.” But, the seminars aren’t the only walking dead-themed activities that Goochland Parks, Recreation and Facilities will host this year. Reynolds said that the Zombie Run 5K that will get underway on Saturday, Oct. 11 will pit humans and makeshift zombies against each other in a competitive costumed foot race. “It’s going to be on our property at the Goochland Sports Complex, and we’ll go through the fields at Goochland Elementary School, and you can be a human or a zombie,” Reynolds said. “The humans will get a two or three minute head start, and the zombies will try to steal their flags.” Like the race, the classes will be light-hearted in nature, given the subject matter. In any event, Kronberg said that they will all include useful see Zombies > 13

Dyer still wants the ball Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
Senior running back David Dyer pounded out more than 1,200 yards in his senior season as a starting Goochland running back — and he still wants more. The talented senior is hoping to take his talents to the next level when fall rolls around. “I just want to keep playing football somewhere,” he said. It’s something he’s been doing since a youth, first beginning his career in GYAA youth football. He followed his brother, Brandon Myles, in to his role as the Bulldogs’ leading ground and pound running back, a role he relished. Myles parlayed that Goochland experience into a four-year gridiron career at West Virginia University. Dyer is hoping for an offer from a lower division school, and hopes his experience as a Bulldog will enhance those chances. “It was a great experience except for coming up short this year,” he said referring to his state championship and runner up titles of years past. Dyer’s consistent performances made an impression

After finishing an all star career at running back for Goochland, David Dyer is looking for a chance to compete at the next level.
on coach Joe Fowler. “David was the heart and soul of our offense this season,” Fowler said. “With all of the injuries we dealt this year, David was the one constant that we could
depend on every game. He was our leading rusher, receiver, and scorer,” Fowler added. Fowler said Dyer has traits that make him an excellent candidate to continue his
career at the next level. “He is an extremely coachable player who always did what we asked, even when we put a lot on his shoulders,” Fowler said. “He is a very unassuming guy who doesn’t
have a lot of ego and will do whatever it takes for the team to be successful.” Dyer showed off his talents at a recent high school allstar game held at Randolph Macon College.
“It was a great experience getting to play with other guys in the state,” Dyer said. “They play at another speed,” he added. He’s hoping to adjust to that level of play at the next level. “I’ve been in contact with some people but haven’t had any offers yet, but I do want to continue to play at the college level,” he said. Dyer doesn’t dwell on what could have been regarding this year’s playoff situation. “We came close and felt like we had the team that could have won the state, but it didn’t happen so now it’s time to move on,” he said. The senior’s tenacity and durability should gain the attention of college staffs, and no one doubts his toughness. “It gets tough in the middle sometime, but you just have to get back up and do what you have to do to win,” he said. That’s the type of attitude he hopes to carry in to his pursuit as career goal to become a physical trainer. For now, Dyer is staying focused, working out and hitting the books and waiting for that call or letter.
For Goochland family, cross country runs in bloodline Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
For Goochland High School freshman Jonteya Molsey, execelling on the cross country trail is something that, well, runs in the family (pun intended). Her mother, Deborah Meredith, was a member of
the cross country team at Colchester College in England. She was so talented at her athletic craft that she qualified to run at the national level, where she represented South Wales and placed third at a country-wide competition. Meredith’s passion for the sport has been passed on in
the bloodline, as both of her daughters — Jonteya and her twin sister, Cierra — have taken to the trails (and in Cierra’s case, the track) just like their mother did all the way across the pond so many years ago. But make no mistake about it: While natural talent and athleticism seem to be
recurring family themes, the girls also work their tails off to progress and enhance their preternatural abilities. Jonteya has run cross country since her days in middle school, which is when current Goochland High School head cross country coach Henry Jones first took notice of her. He was taken aback
by her notably low mile time in gym class and approached her about joining up with the cross country squad. It was a perfect fit, as Jonteya has been running for coach Jones ever since. Submitted photo According to Meredith, a Jonteya Molsey recently typical training day for the qualified for a national cross country meet in San Antonio,

The going doesn’t get any easier bit like this: After a laborious seven- on the Saturday, as the girls conhour day at Goochland High tinue their training regimen in conSchool, the girls train (aka run) for junction with indoor soccer games. Jonteya, in particular, commits approximately two hours. After completing the work out, herself to some additional cardiovasthey exercise their mental faculties cular training on Saturdays, which by sitting down and knocking out usually includes long distance runs their required homework. Then it’s anywhere from four to six miles in on to a strength training workout length. Feeling a little out of breath, yet? which includes squats, deadlifts, and If so, don’t worry: A break is just other muscle-building activities. The ante gets bumped up sev- around the corner. The Molsey sisters usually get a eral levels for Jonteya’s training regiday off of training on Sundays, but men. She does her weight training even then it’s not a true free day, as during school hours, then comes both girls stay extremely active with home to run “two or three miles,” their church community. Jonteya is a volunteer teacher depending on what she’s feeling up who works with 4- and 5-year-olds for on that particular day. After the long-distance run, it’s on Sundays.
After she finishes her teaching, she greets and ushers during service. With a schedule as jam-packed as that, it’s no small wonder that Jonteya just likes to “be at home with her family” whenever she has some free time. All of those long hours put in on wooded trails and in the weight room have paid dividends for Jonteya. In spite of her youth — remember, she’s only a 15-yearold freshman — she has quickly become one of the most talented runners on the Goochland High School cross country squad. In fact, her hard work has taken her to greater heights than perhaps she could have ever imagined. This past November, she qualified for state meet at Great Meadow Park in the Plains as a 14-year-old She placed high enough at that
meet to advance to the Olympic Junior Trials. Once there, she continued her incredible run — no pun intended — by placing sixth and qualifying for a nationwide meet, just like her mother did so many years before in a country thousands of miles away. Although Molsey opted not to compete in the national meet in San Antonio, Texas — she was given only seven days notice — qualifying for such a prestigious event was a major accomplishment in itself. “I knew she had enough endurance for long distance,” Meredith said. “But I was surprised that she was able to qualify for the national level at such a young age.” “Her end goal is to qualify for the Olympics,” Meredith added. And with Jonteya’s unique combination of natural talent and steadfast work ethic, who’s to say that it

Goochland County has produced several top-tier athletes over the last decade and a half: brothers Justin and Ben Verlander, and John Austin Hicks, to name three. Perhaps one day Molsey will be able to add her name to the list of Goochland athletes who moved on to go toe-to-toe with the world beyond this little bubble of rurality. But that’s still far off in the future. At the moment, Jonteya and Cierra remain focused on the task at hand: which, as for now, is training for the indoor track season, which began this month. “I am so incredibly proud of her,” Meredith said. “She is dedicated to her training regimen. I stand behind her in her dream of making the Olympics. No matter what she does or how it works out for her I will always be cheering her on.”
Lessons from a buck Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
I’ve never been a hunter. Despite the fact that I’m a lifetime Powhatanian and therefore surrounded by family members that come down with buck fever every time the leaves turn red, the sport has never appealed to me. There’s something about waking up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to go out and sit through six-plus hours of frigid temperatures that fails to speak to my sense of recreation. This isn’t to say that I don’t have a healthy respect for all the hunters out there. The sport just isn’t for me. Call me a buzzkill. As it stands, I’ve been hunting only once in my entire life, twice if you count the time I tried (unsuccessfully) to shoot bumble bees with a pellet gun one lazy summer afternoon. The one true time I went
hunting, my brother led me into the woods behind our house on an early autumn evening. I sat up against a tree for an hour, dozed off for a bit, then shuffled back inside to make some ramen noodles. I haven’t been out since. Patience is not one of my finer virtues. So when my mom called last week to say that my brother Phil needed help skinning his first buck of the season, I was a bit ambivalent about lending a hand. “It’ll be a good learning experience,” she said. “You should come give it a try.” I hesitated. “Alright,” I sighed. “I’ll be over around 4.” When I got home, my father and brother were still in the woods. In the meantime, I went upstairs and threw on some tarnished rags — an old, puke green flannel and some scrappy Levis — in preparation for the ceremony about to commence.
For comedic effect, I stuck on a fake mustache I found in the trunk of my car and Bob Dylan-esque wayfarer sunglasses. I was under the carport when my father and brother zoomed up on the four-wheeler, the beast’s carcass — limp and bloodied — resting on the front half of the vehicle. It was a three-pointer, and somehow the entire left side of the rack had been broken off. “You slugged him good,” I may have uttered to my brother. “Nice shot.” The first order of business was to hang the creature’s husk from the carport with straps. My father, a seasoned hunter, did this with relative ease. He had gutted the creature in the woods — save the heart and the lungs — so a prominent foot-long gash was visible from his stomach to his ribcage. It was a bit unsettling, especially for a non-hunter such as myself, but it soon became
just another bloody part of the scenery: gory, yes, but necessary. For the next two hours or so, my father, brother and I proceeded with the operation, using two tools essential to every deer-skinning endeavor: the hacksaw and the buck knife. I’ll spare some of the grislier details — and, as you can imagine, there are many grisly details — for those out there who may be queasy of stomach. It was a ceremony of male bonding of sorts, my brother and I tentatively feeling our way around the deer while our knowledgeable father offered instructions (“Don’t cut yourself!” was a oft-repeated phrase) and stepped in to help when the situation called for it. By the time the sun had set behind the collection of trees beside our house, we had cleanly removed the hide from the husk.
I stored the heart — which was rock-solid and apparently a great meal — in a Ziploc bag and chucked the fake mustache in the trash. Then the three of us, dressed in rags, went inside to enjoy a delicious taco dinner. For a while, everything was really, really good. So what sort of lessons can be taken from my first deer skinning experience? The first is that venison heart, as the pundits claim, really does make for a delectable meal. Marinate that thumper in teriyaki sauce and top it with sautéed mushrooms and you’ve got a feast for one you won’t soon forget (I know it may take some serious mental gymnastics to convince yourself to take a bite out of a heart, but trust me, it’s worth it.) The broader philosophical lesson, I suppose, is to never write off something just because it seems foreign or doesn’t appeal to you right away.
By refusing to take part in something solely because it doesn’t neatly assimilate with your sense of self, you are building a wall between yourself and an endless world of possible life-changing experiences. Experiences that may, over time, build upon one another and help you grow into a more complete, well-rounded individual. I will never become the Great White Hunter. I still have no desire to drag myself out of a warm bed at 6 a.m. to wander into subfreezing temperatures on the off-chance a deer with wander across my path. Maybe one day I’ll give it another shot. But, for now, I’m content knowing the basics of skinning a buck — even though it may take some welcomed help from my brother and father to put them into practice.

Zombies continued from > 8 information, and she named some of her personal favorites from the list of forthcoming courses. “Personally, I think that I’m most excited about the “Off-Grid Cooking” class in July and “Getting In Touch With Your Inner MacGyver” that will happen in December,” Kronberg said. “The “Off-Grid Cooking” class will help if the power goes out and it’s out for a few days because you can still
heat your food, and “Getting in Touch With Your Inner MacGyver” will teach you how to improvise in those situations, and that will be fun to learn.” Classes are $35 each. Participants can also register for more than one at a time and save $5 per class. For a full schedule of classes in the “How To Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and Other Natural Disasters” series, visit www. co.goochland.va.us or the Goochland Parks, Recreation and Facilities Facebook page.
