The Goochland County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an amended county nuisance ordinance on Jan. 7, finally bringing a measure of closure to a matter members have been wrestling with for months. At issue, in particular, were the local ordinances governing barking dogs, which Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Stokes told the board in 2013 were conflicting and, in some cases, unconstitutional. The amended ordinance, according to County Attorney Norman Sales, was crafted with three objectives in mind. It needed to be unambiguous; it needed to be simple in implementation; and it needed to “provide an avenue to address animal nuisance issues without punishing responsible dog owners.” Under the new regulations, noise that can be considered a violation must plainly be audible and must occur continuously for at least 60 minutes during the day — defined as 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. — or for 30 minutes at night, defined as 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The punishment for violating the ordinance also has

that point into the scant 300 words she was allowed to use. “I would say it took me around four or five hours of just sitting there with my mom, drinking coffee and yelling,” she laughed, recalling the torture of whittling down the 1,000 words she had composed about whether the U.S. Constitution would work if adopted by another nation. Difficult as it was, Thrasher did manage to come in under the word limit and turn in an essay she was proud of. But she still didn’t expect the tweet that came a few weeks later from one of her teachers, Erin Yearout-Patton, saying she had something very important to tell her. When she found out she had won, “I was very excited,” said Thrasher, who immediately called her mother to share the news.

Thrasher’s essay was selected from among hundreds of essays from students across the region. The contest was sponsored by the American Constitution Spirit Foundation, The Richmond Times-Dispatch and Montpelier. In honor of her achievement, she was recognized at halftime of the 2013 TimesDispatch Invitational Basketball Tournament on Monday, Dec. 23, at the VCU Siegel Center. “Annie’s essay was exceptional,” said Lawrence Creeger, chairman of the American Constitution Spirit Foundation, during the ceremony. “Congratulations to Annie, Mrs. Yearout-Patton, and Goochland High School for this significant achievement.” In recognition of Thrasher’s win, Goochland High School will receive a set of limited edition bronze plaques of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights valued at more than $8,000.

Whatever butterflies he may have been feeling, Thrasher was apparently able to swat them away: by the end of the competition, he had managed to snag a first place win and a trip to the District 13 contest in Palmyra on Sunday, Jan 26.

In addition to noise, the amended ordinance also addresses animals that chase vehicles, obstruct roadways, or cause damage to property. As with the former ordinance, residents who have an issue with another person’s animals must first notify the animal’s owner. The response from residents during the public comment period was overwhelmingly positive, with several enthusiastically thanking board members and Sales for their efforts to find a solution agreeable to all parties involved. “Thank you very much for working with the county on getting the language straight,” Goochland resident Catherine O’Brien said. “The fact that you worked with everybody and got something that is fair and reasonable — that is very much appreciated.”

Thrasher actually made two presentations during the contest, including a 10-minute prepared speech focused on the Constitution. The second was devoted to one of four elements of the Constitution, but Thrasher was not given the precise topic until five minutes before he was set to give his presentation. The topic was the Fourth Amendment, which Thrasher admitted he was less familiar with than other amendments. Still, putting any doubts aside, he pushed through his nerves and made his points. “You really just have to deal with it,” he said of the Last September, board members had spent several hours debating the best way to handle the revision before eventually tabling the matter in favor of further discussion. A meeting in November drew a standing room only crowd of residents, a number of them local dog breeders who were deeply concerned that a new, overly restrictive ordinance would essentially force them to cease operation. A number of hunters also expressed their concerns, speaking out vehemently against any changes that would restrict the ownership or use of hunting dogs. The best tip he can give to any potential oratorical challengers? Enunciate, enunciate, enunciate. “You need to make sure everyone can understand what you’re saying,” Thrasher pointed out helpfully. “Otherwise, it’s kind of pointless.” of the ordinance, including whether a dog owner could be fined if his dog ran out in the road and was struck by a car. He was quickly assured that this would not be an issue. “What you have to understand is that this is a public nuisance ordinance,” Sales said. “So what that requires is a recurring issue. You would also have to have been notified of the issue.” One resident who spoke stressed to the board that the new measure would likely be embraced by many residents. “I think those of us who have been responsible dog owners for years won’t have a problem with this,” he said. “And I think those that do have a problem now have an avenue to resolve that.”

Noise rule change was handled the right way By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When it comes to the things local government’s face, contentious issues are not exactly rare. People are people are people, after all, and whenever you get enough of those people together — whether it’s in a room, a county or a country — there is bound to be some friction. What is rare, however, especially these days, is an instance of two groups of people managing to walk into a room, sit down at a table, and peaceably reach a compromise. Judging by the recent debacle at the federal level, hashing out differences seems to have devolved into a zero-sum game, with plenty of finger-pointing and very little progress. This is why it was so refreshing to witness what took place during last week’s Goochland County Board of Supervisors meeting. While the old adage about not being able to please all of the people all of the time still remains very much in effect, the county’s newly revised nuisance ordinance appears to have come close. One by one during the meeting, residents approached the microphone to thank the supervisors for listening to them, and for working hard to find a solution that all could live with. It wasn’t a pretty process, noted

one board member, and time will tell if the revised ordinance continues to meet residents’ needs. But in a time when decency, diplomacy and discourse seem to have fallen out of favor, county leaders and a committed group of residents proved just how useful they can be. *** Twenty-five years later, I still remember the word: villain. I don’t remember exactly how I spelled it, but I do clearly remember that it knocked me out of the school spelling bee. As the 2014 Goochland division-wide spelling bee wrapped up last week, a talented group of local students got the chance to enjoy an event that, with each passing year, seems like an homage to a skill that isn’t celebrated the way it used to be. If e-mail is killing the handwritten note, then the spell-check feature may be slowly eating away at the ability to correctly spell words like heuristic (serving to indicate or point out) or triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13). Someday, asking a young person to stand in front of a crowd and spell out random words may seem as antiquated as an abacus. Until then, however, let’s all enjoy the grit and gumption of our young spelling champs. Letter by letter, they are keeping a proud tradition alive.

Letters to the Editor First-ever Goochland Elementary World Faire a smashing success Dear Editor, Throughout the first semester of this school year, fifth grade students at Goochland Elementary School were studying World Explorations, which is a new addition this year to the fifth grade curriculum. One of the requirements for the students was that they had to produce a project that would reflect their overall understanding of the seven world continents. Teaching World Explorations was a new adventure for me, as I have not taught this material before. After having worked with a team over the summer in finalizing the curriculum, my mind was already overflowing with ideas. There was so much freedom in this new curriculum. Almost immediately as I began to plan over the summer, I was thinking World Bazaar or Faire, it was a small idea at first without any structure or content to it, I hadn’t thought through the entire “meat” of it. I knew that I wanted the project to be completely focused on the students being able to show and teach others what they had learned. I shared my ideas with Zoe Parrish (ITRT) and we both began bouncing ideas off of one another and the creative energies were flowing. It was wonderful madness and without her help I don’t think that the faire would have been as successful as it was, especially in helping with the technological elements. I also wanted to collaborate across curriculums and with the help of my colleagues; Andrew Meiller, Jodi. Chewning, and Bari Nixon, we were able to include Writing, Reading and Mathematics activities into the project. Once the students were provided with some basic guidelines and focus points, they were rolling. I have never seen students so engaged in learning, this was absolutely the most fun I have had in teaching. They blew me away with their creative minds and went way

That’s my dog! By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Over the years, I’ve read an untold number of columns on people losing their dogs after years of love and dedication. They always move me, often bringing tears to my eyes. I’ve even written one or two in my career. But, after I wrote the last one to a big old Lab named Bo, I swore them off as too routine, overly cliché and usually too personal and private. It also

outside of the box as far as meeting and truly exceeding my expectations. The teams worked so well together. This was their show, they owned it, they were the teachers for the day. There were food samples, hands-on activities and many technological pieces that allowed students to use their iPads. The fifth grade students changed up their teaching styles in order to meet the needs of the grade level that was visiting. The students were completely responsible for which countries were to be on exhibit and all of the content included. This was a the very best example and display of deeper learning, higher level thinking, problem-solving and impeccable leadership. Jen Cosby Teacher Goochland Elementary School see Letters > page 7

seemed like almost an offense to the dogs I’d written about to eulogize the next one a decade later. But, I surely understand why people write them. Few things in life evoke the emotions associated with a dog, and saying goodbye to them is one of life’s more difficult tasks. And, quite honestly, a writer writes, and events like the death of a dog are supposed to affect us and provide the subtle tidbits of life, and death, that make it possible for guys like me to do what they do. And producing a tribute of words seems like the least I can do to remember and memorialize such a loyal and devoted friend. After losing our 14-year-old black lab Vito, I feel obliged to write just that sort of column, and to remember him to see Dog > page 16

Recent article the facts about Benedictine case

Dear Editor, The article in the Dec. 26 edition of the Gazette concerning Benedictine College Prep leaves a lot to be desired. To this reader at least, it is a classic example of sensationalism reporting. The headline, Benedictine Plan Will Be Appealed, is misleading at best if not blatantly unfactual. Benedictine’s plan is not what is being appealed. The only thing being appealed, and it is the only thing that can be appealed at this stage, is Judge Timothy Sanner’s decision in the matter. The judge’s decision was that the appellants had no standing to make an appeal in the first place and, secondly, the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) had no jurisdiction to hear the appeal. Contrary to what was stated later in the article, the BZA did not reverse the county’s approval of the plan of development. They addressed only one issue

When in comes to robotics teams, where are all the girls? Dear Editor, It’s always encouraging to see bright young people interested in robotics and engineering like the ones on a recent Goochland Gazette cover and one must applaud their efforts. What is discouraging, however, is the fact that there wasn’t a single female member of the team and no female coaches. I have to wonder about the extent of encouragement our young women are receiving in school. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see at least one, if not more, female members of the team? And even better to have female coaches as role models? Just sayin’. Debra Markel Manakin-Sabot

Following up... As we all know, there’s always more to every story. Such was the case with our recent spread on the Richmond Rim Riders wheelchair basketball team’s visit to Goochland High School, and the photo of a young ball player that ran with it (reprinted here). The following note was sent to us by Rim Rider Stan Corn after we had gone to press, but we still wanted to share it with our readers. “Wheelchair athletes are an interesting collection of individuals. Playing sports in a wheelchair is the end result of some catastrophic event in the player’s life. As inspiring as it is to witness these athletes in action, the stories behind how they got there is a story unto itself and worth telling. The events are, in many cases, what you would expect. An automobile accident where the back seat passenger, unseat-belted, went through the windshield and found himself conscious on the ground but unable to move. Military veterans, blown up in Vietnam, two losing both legs at the hip and the other with little spinal column function. Birth defects such as spinal bifida which puts kids in wheelchairs at an early age. You also have those that are less sympathetic characters. Two come to mind that were shot. One in the commission of a crime and the other by police, accidently. Both will tell you that if they had not been shot and wheelchair -bound, today they would either be dead or in jail. Some 20 years ago, the number 3 ranked woman wheelchair tennis player in the country was a young lady that got drunk at a

At a service call, he was working on an outside unit and unaware of the activity inside. Someone fired a weapon inside and through the wall, hitting Dwayne in the spine. Grants available for tree projects Contributed Report

The USFS Chesapeake Watershed Forestry Program has approved $108,000 in grant funding to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay by creating and supporting long-term and sustained tree canopy cover. Citizen groups, educational institutions, private citizens and local governments within the Chesapeake Bay watershed are encouraged to apply for grants under the “Virginia Trees for Clean Water program. Grants are awarded through this program for planting riparian buffers or trees in neighborhoods and communities. The grant covers projects to be completed during the spring and early fall of 2014. The goal of the program is to plant trees that restore and improve the

waters of the Chesapeake Bay for the benefit of current and future citizens of the Commonwealth. Types of eligible projects include riparian buffer tree planting as well as community tree plantings. Successful proposals will demonstrate “on-the-ground accomplishments to obtain clean water in the Chesapeake Bay; the merit of the project and how the trees will be maintained. Funding is available on a 50/50 match basis. In-kind match, including volunteer time, is permissible. The grant application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 13. By the sound of it, the conversation was just like any you might expect to hear between a young man and his family visiting from out of town. They wished him a happy birthday; he asked about a girl he’d been friendly with. They caught up on the latest news, asked him about school, and teased him about his new haircut.

The only thing that made this particular visit unusual, in fact, was that the young man’s family was in Roanoke and he was more than 100 miles away at the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center, where he currently resides. Thanks to a new program called VisuVisit, which the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice launched on Nov. 20, 2013, juvenile offenders housed at Beaumont have been able to visit with family via a secure Internet connection, enjoying hour-long conversations up to once a week. The meetings are governed by the same rules as on-site visitations — those taking part must pass background checks, and each virtual visit is monitored by correctional center staff — and are typically scheduled for see Visits > page 9

Visits continued from > 8 either Wednesday or Sunday evenings. Currently, families who want to take part must visit a rec center in Roanoke where a faith-based group called Straight Street maintains and operates a secure computer terminal with access to Beaumont. On Wednesday, Jan. 8, after a few minutes of wrangling with some unexpected connection issues, staff members at Beaumont watched from a few yards away as a young man named Nicholas caught up with his stepmother and siblings. A tall, lanky kid with an easy grin and close-cropped hair, Nicholas leaned in close to the monitor as he asked his family about what they had done on New Year’s Eve. They asked him how he had celebrated his birthday, and what

he’d had to eat that day. Nicholas’ family has not missed a single opportunity to visit with him, Greg Davy, public information officer for VDJJ, said, but that isn’t the case for many young residents. In fact, Davy said, around 20 percent of the young men serving sentences at Beaumont receive no regular visits, often because family members simply can’t afford to make the trip. “Using these visits is one thing we can do to soothe parents’ fears about what is happening with their children,” Beaumont superintendent Charles Dockery said. “Often, if they can see the child, they feel better.” The equipment and technology used for VisuVisit has been around for years, Dockery said — it is essentially a much more secure version of the popular Internet-based communication service Skype — but was previously used to

connect the boys with probation officers and other staff members. The VisuVisit program is focused on the Roanoke area for now, Dockery said, because that is where the need was greatest. A program in Danville is expected to be up and running by February. As the end of his visit neared, Nicholas assured his stepmother that he was getting his work done and keeping his head down. There were a few more birthday wishes, and then the screen went black. Nicholas said afterward that he writes to his family every night, but that it’s the visits that help keep him connected to the life he left behind. “I look forward to it every time,” he said, in large part because of the guidance his family provides, even from afar. “They encourage me every day to do what I need to do so I can come home.”

The Internal Revenue Service recently announced plans to open the 2014 filing season on Friday, Jan. 31, and encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds. The new opening date for individuals to file their 2013 tax returns will allow the IRS adequate time to program and test its tax processing systems. The annual process for updating IRS systems saw significant delays in October following the 16-day federal government closure. The government closure meant the IRS had to change the original opening date from Jan. 21 to Jan. 31, 2014. The 2014 date is one day later than the 2013 filing season opening, which started on Jan. 30, 2013, following January tax law changes made by Congress on Jan. 1 under the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA). The extensive set of ATRA tax changes affected

many 2012 tax returns, which led to the late January opening. The IRS noted that several options are available to help taxpayers prepare for the 2014 tax season and get their refunds as easily as possible. New year-end tax planning information has been added to IRS.gov. In addition, many software companies are expected to begin accepting tax returns in January and hold those returns until the IRS systems open on Jan. 31. The IRS cautioned that it will not process any tax returns before Jan. 31, so there is no advantage to filing on paper before the opening date. Taxpayers will receive their tax refunds much faster by using e-file or Free File with the direct deposit option. The April 15 tax deadline is set by statute and will remain in place. However, the IRS reminds taxpayers that anyone can request an automatic sixmonth extension to file their tax return. The request is easily done with Form 4868, which can be filed electronically or on paper. IRS systems, applications and databases must be updated annually to reflect tax law updates, business process changes and programming updates in time for the start of the filing season. The October closure came during the peak period for preparing IRS systems for the 2014 filing season. About 90 percent of IRS operations were closed during the shutdown, with some major work streams closed entirely during this period, putting the IRS nearly three weeks behind its tight timetable for being ready to start the 2014 filing season.

Rosenwald school group holds first annual meeting By Ken Odor Special Correspondent

About 150 people turned out last Sunday for the first annual meeting of the Second Union (Rosenwald) School Inc. (SURS). “We were proud to be black without a doubt and even more proud to be Americans,” said Julia Price in her presentation on the history of Second Union School, one of several segments on African-American education in the South and a history of the school and the efforts underway to turn it into a museum, Held in the fellowship hall of Second Union Church in western Goochland, the meeting featured a series of speakers, dinner and a tour of the Second Union Rosenwald School, the oldest surviving example of the 10 Rosenwald schools built in Goochland County. “I’m elated at what has happened here tonight,” said SURS president Calvin Hopkins after the meeting. “I hope that it enlightened everyone about our plans going forward,” he said. Those plans include continuing restoration work on the Second Union School that served African-American students in the western end of the county from 1918 until 1959. Built for about $2,000, with $150 coming from the African-American community, a public contribution of $1,800, and the Rosenwald Fund contribution of $50, the school building is listed on the a National Register of Historic Places. Plans are to turn it into a living history museum. Hopkins said work needs to be done to refinish the floors, put screens on the windows, and improve the interior lighting. Hopkins said the school also needs permanent audio-visual capability to show programs like the oral histories that visitors enjoyed at the Sunday gathering.

Among the guests was Ethel Evans, 94, the oldest living alumnus of the school. “I used to walk five miles to the school,” recalled Evans, who attended the meeting with two of her daughters. After the presentations, Hopkins led a question and answer session during which several former students recalled their time there. “That school was the best time of my life,” said Gail Smith. “We were poor but we were happy poor.” Smith said the education she got there helped her land “two fantastic jobs” as an adult. Many former Second Union School students fondly remembered Second Union teacher Fanny Beale. Hopkins recalled with a smile that her discipline was strong. “She liked to use the ruler,” he laughed. William Taliaferro said he was lucky to have been able to ride the bus to the school and said he and friends were often late coming back from recess, having gone too far out in the woods to play. After the supper, visitors toured the old school in the twilight, examining artifacts from an earlier era. Justin A. Sarafin of Preservation Virginia praised the efforts of the nonprofit corporation and said he hoped what had been done at Second Union might serve as a model for a state-wide program to preserve Rosenwald schools. “Preservation Virginia aims to identify and inventory the remaining Rosenwald Schools across the state (upwards of 350 were built) and then advocate for their rehabilitation and re-use,” wrote Sarafin in an email to the Gazette on Sunday. To find out more about becoming a member of SURS and contributing to the restoration effort, visit the website at www.secondunionrosenwaldschool.org or contact SURS by email at secondunionrosenwaldschool@gmail.com.

Benedictine ranks third in poll, takes down Trinity Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

On the morning of Jan. 8, the latest batch of VISAA boys basketball rankings was posted on the Richmond TimesDispatch website. Benedictine was third. Trinity Episcopal was seventh. The following evening, less than four miles from the TimesDispatch building, Benedictine proved they were worthy of being placed four spots ahead of Trinity. In front of a vicious student section at the fabled Rut Court, the Cadets took down the Titans 62-45. The win was an important one for coach Ryan Marable and the Cadets because it snapped a two-game winning streak and got them back on the right path. Robert Johnson, who was named RT-D Invitational Most Valuable Player earlier this year, was his typical, lightsout self, scoring a game-high 19 points. Resident three-point artist C.J. Wiggins contributed 17. Josh Bailey was the final Cadet to finish in double digits. He had 12. The game was close at halftime, with Benedictine leading by a slim 23-18 margin. However, the Cadets effectively

a timeout to help his players regroup, but ultimately considered against it. “I just wanted to play through it and see how we would adjust to it on their own,” said Marable. “Early in the season, I want them to play through it. We’ve got a veteran group, especially with Robert [Johnson] and C.J [Wiggins] and Reid [Jacoby] and I knew we would handle the pressure once we adjusted to it.” Marable’s strategic nonmove turned out to be a wise one. The Cadets regrouped — just like Marable suspected — and finished the game on a 12-7 run to capture the victory. After the game, in the concrete-walled underbelly of Rut Court, Marable sat down on a bench outside the locker room and discussed the merits of owning one of the greatest home-court advantages in the Richmond-metro area. “I don’t think you can put a quantitative measurement on it,” he said. “It’s great. It’s Photo by Mike Schoeffel great for a young team. It’s Benedictine’s C.J. Wiggins throws up a mid-range jumper against Trinity on Jan. 9. Wiggins had 17 points. inspiring. this environment.” No combination of words could accurately describe the carnivalesque atmosphere at Rut Court. It’s something that must be experienced to truly be appreciated. Walking into the building, you’re treated to low-hanging rafters that feature signatures from athletes of years past. Those rafters — the bones of the building — give the place a definite haunted barn feel to it. Cramped and somehow smoky, you get the sense that you’re mingling with an otherworldly realm, even if you aren’t inclined to believe in that sort of mysticism. Then you see the student section: the hard hats, the shamrocks, the over-the-top enthusiasm, and it lifts the entire scene into something bordering on the absurd. Their unabashed antics often attract as much attention as the action on the court. The chants — and they have many — “for the managers and players one through 12” are highly original, and they stick in the memory like wet taffy. “Go back to Sports See Cadets>page 14

Bulldogs basketball comes up short in Cross-River Romp Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

The last time the Powhatan girls basketball team played a home game, they were taken to task by a high-R.P.M. Monticello team that ran the court perhaps better than any

other team they’ve faced this season. When they returned to their home court five days later (Jan. 8), they looked like a completely rejuvenated group of girls. This was bad news for the visiting Bulldogs, who struggled to find open shots from the floor in a 54-35 loss

to the homestanding Indians. It’s the third consecutive loss for the Bulldogs. The win gave Powhatan its first two-game win streak of the season. In her office after the game, Powhatan head coach Paulette Bowman talked about why her team was able to handle Goochland so well.

“Monticello was a much better team, simple as that,” she said. “They are the best team in our district. So it’s not necessarily what we did better, it’s just that the Mustangs were able to hit their shots. They made us pay for our mistakes.” “When we made a mistake against Goochland, we didn’t

pay for it quite as much,” she added. Playing no small part in the Indians’ dominating victory was imposing senior center Timesha Morris. Morris had a relatively quiet game against Monticello, but she was in top-notch form against the red-clad foes from

across the river. She played the majority of the game — save most of the fourth quarter, when the second team was granted court time — and finished with a season-high 27 points. The two Johnsons — See Girls> page14

GMS swim team competing in first season Contributed Report

Goochland Middle School has introduced brand new sport to their athletic ensemble during the 2013-2014 winter sports season: swimming. Coached by Cindy Mathews, the swim team was approved by the Goochland County School Board and two meets were scheduled soon thereafter: one at the Greater Richmond Aquatics Partnership (G.R.A.P.) pool

on Dec. 13 and another at St. Catherine’s on Jan. 10. ‘ In that final meet, the team would have been given the opportunity to swim with and against some of the best private schools in the Richmond-metro area and beyond, including Collegiate, Norfolk Academy, Trinity Episcopal, St. Anne’sBelfield and St. Michaels. However, the meet was canceled due to school being closed. It’s like the ketchup of chants. “They’re passionate,” said Marable. “I wish I would have gotten a chance to play in an atmosphere like this. For the players, it creates a memory that will last a lifetime.” The Cadets are in the process of making life-long mem-

ories with each passing game. With a record of 15-3, Marable’s boys seemed poised to make a run at yet another state title. If they pull it off, it will be in no small way thanks to the mental boys and girls in the student section who cheer like every game is their last tournament.

Bowman discussed in blunt terms the key to Morris’ success. “We were able to get her the ball,” said Bowman flatly. “We had a hard time getting the ball to her and giving her the opportunity to score [against Monticello]. We were able to get her the ball this game. That’s the main thing. We allowed her have a good game.” The teams were tied at nine at the conclusion of the first quarter. It wouldn’t stay close for long. The Indians outscored the Bulldogs 24-9 in the second quarter and 15-5 in the third, bringing to tally to 48-18 heading into the final period. That turgid advantage granted Bowman the freedom to sub in a good number of second teamers who rarely have the opportunity to grace the court — something, she said, is much more valuable than the scrimmage time that the second string sees during practice.

Photos by Kenny Moore

Goochland and Powhatan players battle it out for a rebound.

“We scrimmage in practice, but we always have to stop when someone makes a mistake,” said Bowman. “But here, they get to play through their mistakes. So it was huge that everybody got to play. Plus they got to play quite a few minutes.” The first half of the fourth quarter was dedicated solely to granting the second teamers that valuable real-game experience. But when Goochland went on a 12-2 run that shrunk the Powhatan lead to 50-30, Bowman hurried to get the first teamers back out there — Morris and the two Johnsons

included. But the game was already well-in-hand at that point. Any thought of a Goochland comeback on the Indians part could have been dismissed as mere paranoia. Still, the first-teamers provided the jolt Powhatan needed to put a proper coda on the contest. The Indians walked away with a 19-point victory. Jessica Liddle and Khalya Leabaugh had solid games for the Bulldogs. Each saw a sizable chunk of playing time and contributed to the Bulldogs total with nine points each.

Before there was this batch of kids, old age and a failing memory, there was Vito. It’s hard to imagine a memory where our trusted black lab wasn’t in our family photo, and his passing leaves a large hole in our hearts. Vito brought his mischievous presence into our lives, and — from day one forward — never stopped giving, loving or caring for our family. We felt the same way about him. once majestic lab lay in my arms and stared into my eyes, his tired tail still wagging at every utterance I managed to get out. The hairs on his once jet black nose were now mostly gray and his once powerful body was just a shadow of its glorious past. Those eyes, however, were still dignified and clear as he raised his ears as I spoke. He looked as noble and majestic on his final day as he had on his first. I told him how he had helped me raise my children, face enormous unforeseen challenges and lifted my spirits on every occasion we were together. I whispered how much he was loved, how my children adored him

And I take solace in the fact that Vito lived, loved and enhanced our lives with an unselfish dedication that leaves us with a valuable lesson about friendship and commitment that only he could deliver. I also know that one day the sight of a photo or a memory of Vito will bring large smiles to our faces, and the memory of him will inspire us even in his absence. The tears will be replaced with thoughts of Vito running wild, playing rough and chasing his favorite tennis ball, and we’ll know that, somehow, he’s still with us. One day, we’ll be happy again. Life goes on without a dog, and there are infinite amounts of wonderful experiences waiting for my children to enjoy. And there will be other dogs, maybe even one as dedicated and loyal as Vito. But, it will never be exactly the same without him, and the lack of his warm breath on the back of my calf leaves a permanent sense of remorse somewhere in my psyche. Vito took a piece of my heart when he left us, but he also left a slice of his that lives on in three heart-broken

Any costs incurred by the bidder to inspect the property are at the expense of the bidder and are non-refundable. Please be advised that in order to qualify as a bidder at this auction, you may not owe delinquent taxes to Goochland County and you may not be a Defendant in any pending delinquent tax matter. Questions concerning the properties subject to sale or the tax sale process should be directed to TACS online at www.taxva.com, by email to taxsales@taxva.com, or by phone to (804) 545-2377.
