Schools break ground on new projects

For the first time in over six years, the Goochland County Public Schools will be breaking ground on capital improvement projects this year. Having been approved as part of the school board’s long range Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), projects for the current and coming fiscal year were discussed by the Board of Supervisors on Jan. 3 during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting. The supervisors voted unanimously to fund the projects and get construction underway. “The alignment between the two boards and overwhelming support for these much-needed improvements was humbling,” said Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Peter Gretz, who led the Facilities Committee through the development of the CIP. “We are excited to be in a position to begin some of the work we have been hoping for the past several years.” The projects to begin immediately include: • Additions to the Goochland High School field house, which will house the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training see Schools > page 9

In that situation, Alice has been trained to stand perfectly still and wait as Hammock lowers herself to her knees. Eat, play, fetch…grocery shop? When it comes to activities people do with their canine companions, food runs might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But accompanying

Alice has been trained to assist Hammock in dozens of ways, and to see them make their way through the aisles is to witness teamwork in action. When it came time to spell her final word, the one that would earn her first place in the 2014 Goochland County division-wide spelling bee on Jan. 8, Victoria Spooner, 12, faced a bit of a dilemma. The word was “porosity,” and Victoria had never heard or seen it before. Fo r t u n a te l y, “I was able to Spooner kind of sound it out in my head,” she remembered during an interview last week, and her instincts proved to be spot-on. In honor of her win, Victoria was awarded a brand new dictionary and a chance to compete in the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s regional spelling bee on March 8. Victoria’s road to spelling glory began with a spelling test given to students at Goochland Middle School, where she is in seventh grade. After getting nine out of 15 words right, she earned a chance to compete at the school level. Victoria admitted she was a little nervous since she had never

continued from > 1 says it helps store managers and others to feel more comfortable — is equipped with a special raised handle that Hammock can also use to steady herself as she walks. As their bond has grown stronger, said Hammock, Alice’s abilities have continued to amaze her. Several times, she said, the dog has been able to sense that Hammock is about to lose her balance, alerting her with a gentle nudge to the leg. “It’s like she’s saying ‘Take it easy,’” Hammock said. Alice was in full work mode last Thursday, as she accompanied Hammock and her fiancé, Michael Silver, on a trip to the Food Lion a few miles from Goochland’s courthouse. Also along for the trip was Rolo, a Hamiltonstovare Hammock and Silver are also training to work as a service dog. When it comes to taking her dogs with her into stores and restaurants, Hammock said

reaction is usually very positive. But while Alice and Rolo have developed a loyal fan base around Goochland, Hammock admitted there have been some store owners outside the county who have given her a hard time. “Because I’m not in a wheelchair, people think I’m not disabled,” Hammock said. By law, under the Americans With Disabilites Act, business owners are required to allow service animals access to any area customers are normally permitted to go. Judging from the broad smiles on the faces of those who passed by the little convoy in Food Lion last Thursday, Hammock’s dogs are more than welcome there. For her part, Hammock said she could not be more pleased with the difference having the dogs has made in her life. “My idea from the beginning was that I wanted a healthy dog with a good temperament,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better dog.”

Hamiltonstovars The Hamiltonstovare, a breed native to Sweden and also referred to as the Swedish Foxhound or Hamilton Hound, is exceptionally rare in the United States, with less than 50 of them currently identified. Ashley Hammock’s two Hamiltonstovars, Alice and Rolo, also boast numerous accolades: Alice is the only Hamiltonstovare to win a Best in Show in North America, she is the first Hamiltonstovare to be nominated for an ACE (Award for Canine Excellence) in the Service Dog category by the American Kennel Club. Rolo is the first Hamiltonstovare to earn a weight pull title and his personal best is 1,480 pounds pulled (which is 20 times his body weight). Rolo earned his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen title in September 2013.

Jack Martin, right, president of Goochland Rotary Club, presented Dr. James Lane, superintendent of Goochland County Schools, with a grant of $5,000. John Wright, left, is a member of the Goochland County School Board and a past president of the Rotary club.

The environmental sciences program in Goochland County Public Schools received a boost recently, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Goochland. “Our club has a long history of supporting the schools in our county. I’m delighted that we can be a partner in this very worthwhile effort,” said Jack Martin, president of the Rotary Club of Goochland. The grant is part of an $11,000 project to help students better understand environmental issues, particularly those that are weather-related. Specifically, Rotary’s donation will help purchase a lightning detector at Byrd Elementary School and establish WeatherBug stations at Goochland and Randolph

elementary schools, Goochland High School, and Goochland Middle School. The project is expected to be fully implemented by the end of May. “The Weather Bug program and the financial and mentoring support of the Rotary Club of Goochland has been a phenomenal enhancement in our schools,” said Dr. James Lane, superintendent of Goochland County Schools. “In addition to the instructional upgrades we have seen in our classrooms, personally, I love being able to log onto the webcam at Byrd Elementary School to monitor weather conditions from my phone through the WeatherBug App.” Lane added that this latest donation will “further improve our instructional programs and

safety initiatives.” The Rotary Club of Goochland is a volunteer service organization, consisting of 54 members who meet each Friday over breakfast at Richmond Country Club. The club’s members provide a wide variety of services for the underprivileged citizens of the county, from delivering free firewood to assisting in the construction of homes for Habitat for Humanity. Medarva bringing new medical center to The Notch at West Creek By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Ellis Contracting Inc. Providence Forge, VA 804-366-9536

Medarva, the parent company of Medarva Stony Point Surgery Center, has started construction on a medical center located in The Notch at West Creek, hoping to create what President and CEO Bruce P. Kupper describes as a collaborative environment for physicians and a convenient place for patients to find all the services they need. Once complete, the 65,965 square foot facility will feature physicians from primary care to subspecialists and eventually offer diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic services. The Notch at West Creek is a 230-acre mixed-use development and is a sub-sec-

tion of the larger 3,500-acre West Creek Business Park, known as home to Capital One campus and other high-profile businesses. Medarva’s building, set to be completed by December of this year, will be located in a section of The Notch known as West Creek Medical Park. “When we approved the apartments at The Notch last year we believed it would be the spark we needed to get development started in West Creek — and that’s exactly what’s happening,” District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez said. “For Medarva it is a great location, because they will be able to attract citizens from Henrico, Goochland and beyond,” Alvarez said. Medarva selected the West Creek

development because of its location at the intersection of 288 and West Broad Street, with I-64 and I-295 interchanges in close proximity. “We believe that this location, like our Stony Point location, will expand Medarva and allow its affiliated physicians’ to be accessible to the entire Central Virginia region,” said Kupper. “This expansion is evidence that we are committed to the Greater Richmond community, our independent physician partners, to funding cutting-edge research and supporting community based organizations that meet the needs of the underserved,” Kupper added. “We are excited to be planting new roots in The Notch and know that it will benefit us and our community,” he said.

By the time Ernest Shinault reached the third grade, he felt that his teachers had given up on trying to teach him. Although he continued to attend school, he stopped learning before he even mastered his reading skills. He finally dropped out of school in the ninth grade. Luckily, he never lacked for jobs. He did construction and also worked for Nabisco for several years, but he always regretted his lack of a high school diploma. Forty six years later, thanks to the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Adult Literacy and GED programs, plus perseverance on his part, he is the proud recipient of his GED diploma. Three years ago, Shinault enrolled in the free GFCFS Adult Literacy program, which is open to all Goochland residents. This was not an easy step

Praise for soldiers once forgotten By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If today’s date, Jan. 23, doesn’t immediately seem significant, perhaps that’s understandable. After all, dates have a way of losing their power over time. (Need proof? Ask a random sample of people about Dec. 7 and see how many under 30 know the importance of that day.) But, to quite a few county residents, today is the anniversary of a particularly significant event in American history. It was 41 years ago today that President Richard Nixon announced the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, shortly after taking part in the Paris Peace Accords. Vietnam, as we all know, has never been celebrated in popular culture the way other wars have been. And yet its heroes — no less brave and no less deserving of our deepest respect — are left to wrestle with the same demons and obstacles all veterans face. So many were the children of “The Greatest Generation,” those who had distinguished themselves on the battlefields during World

War II and returned home to the embrace of a united and grateful nation. Their experience two decades later, however, could not have been more different. Despite tremendous loss of life and innumerable personal sacrifices, the effort in Vietnam was plagued by politics and the loss of support here at home. The War in Vietnam had no celebratory ending, and no equivalent to V-E Day, which saw the country erupting in joyous celebration at the conclusion of World War II. Instead, the brave men and women who served their country in Vietnam often came home to ambivalence or worse. And while we have come a long way over the years in attempting to rectify the injustices suffered by returning Vietnam veterans, it seems we rarely go far enough. There is no way, of course, to turn back the clock and right the wrongs. What we can do however, especially today, is to make sure that all of our community’s Vietnam veterans receive a sincere and heartfelt “thank you” for their service. They deserve nothing less.

Letter to the Editor Recent column on the U.S. justice system concerned reader Dear Editor, I was disappointed on several levels to have read Jim Ridolphi’s article in The Goochland Gazette last week entitled: “Justice in America: A crapshoot at best.” There are three particular areas where this article seems off-base, and the first is the title. Frankly, I do not expect the authors or editors of my local paper to be using words like “crapshoot” in either headlines or articles. The connotation (if not the denotation) of this term is scatological and there is no place for it, or similar terms, in my hometown paper. I expect more from The Goochland Gazette than tabloid vernacular. Yes I understand that crapshoot may refer to the dice game, but that is not how the vast majority of people define the term “crap.” There is no place and no need to use this term to make their point. I assume newspapers still have access to thesauruses. Please

use them. My second issue is the framing of the article as was done by taking obscure examples of extreme court cases, separated by nearly three decades and three thousand miles, where guilty parties were either severely punished, or not punished nearly enough. As a reader I can tell you that after reading the article, I do not know enough about either case cited to be able to draw comparisons and contrast. But even without this, the reader can determine that both of these cases are at either end of the spectrum, and Mr. Ridolphi’s point seems to be that these cases illustrate total randomness in the administration of “justice.” I would like to submit to Mr. Ridolphi, that like so many other things, justice in our system is a Bell Curve, with the vast majority of cases falling in the middle of the curve. Examples from the far-extent of either edge are not representative of the 98-plus percent represented in the center. When I look back at many recent cases over the past few years, I see mostly competent, careful prosecution of offenses,

and I thank the Commonwealth Attorneys for that. I also see a state that is willing to admit when an error is made and make all possible efforts to swiftly right those wrongs, as done recently in the cases of Thomas Haynseworth and Jonathan Montgomery. But there will always be human error in any system, including lying witnesses, incompetent lawyers, gullible juries, and foolish judges. My final issue with last week’s article relates to the use of “America” in the headline as well as the article. With this inclusion, the author is indicting the nation and making comment that our justice system is a major problem in America. Really? To where would Mr. Ridolphi have us look to find a better system? I have traveled the world in the past couple decades, and my observation is that “unfair justice” is a standard headline in every newspaper in the world. As the holiday season makes its 2013 exit, most of us are left with inflated credit card bills, a few extra pounds on the waistline and breathing a large exhale of relief that we made it through another Christmas. It’s also raised some probing questions from a combination of my 10- and 11-year-olds regarding some of the season’s most difficult questions. I’m talking Santa Claus, details, origin, history, existence, etc. Weeks before the holidays arrived, circumstances dictated the revelation that the Tooth Fairy pro-

cedure might not be based in reality. What I thought would be an “I thought so” moment turned into a major discussion on legend and myth, and a resistance to believe some of life’s more difficult lessons. I explained that I didn’t invent the Tooth Fairy process, but, when they asked where the money came from, I was left with nothing, zero. Problem with kids these days is that they are smart, cynical and inquisitive. My explanations were based in reality, but were met with a certain degree of skepticism. “Why should we believe you are telling the truth now about the Tooth Fairy?” one of them asked. “And, what about Santa Claus?”

followed. Now, I quickly explained to them that questioning the existence of Santa Claus so close to Christmas was risky business. That held off their inquiries for the moment, but little comments during the holidays led me to believe some questioned — and some didn’t. I’m not at all sure what parenting experts recommend on this perplexing dilemma of how much and when is a holiday dose of reality in order. My sentimental side tells me that in a world of endless challenges and disappointments, a bit of fantasy wouldn’t do any of us any harm. see Parents > page 7

Letter continued from > 6 the first few pages. Would Mr. Ridolphi feel that he had better opportunity for a fair trial in Mexico? China? India? Germany? Ireland? Egypt? South Africa? Turkey? Russia? Just where in this world does a demonstrably fairer justice system exist? Is our system perfect? No. Can our system be improved? Maybe. Most things can be improved. However, my observation is that over the past decades and centuries most countries have come to model their justice more like the American system, and not less. Paul Maguire Goochland

Organization working hard to support education Dear Editor, I want to let the community know of an organization that is working quietly in the background to help the students and teachers of Goochland County. Alpha Epsilon of Delta Kappa Gamma International recently reported to the state and international organization on the work of the local

chapter. The organization is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 100,000 members. Established in 18 member countries around the world, the Society defines its mission as promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. During the past year, Alpha Epsilon members were involved in the following projects: • Making and distributing welcome baskets to all new teachers in Goochland County • Awarding a $500 Brenda Simms grant to a recent alumnae of Goochland High School who has completed university studies and is pursuing a career in education. • Awarding two $100 minigrants to teachers who have a desire to complete a project with their children but lack the funding. • Hours of tutoring and mentoring our elementary students. • Providing snacks and assistance with the Reading Olympics. • Providing books for Goochland preschoolers in the Head Start Program. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor Alpha Epsilon has allowed me to give back to a community that I have taught in for the past 35 years. As a mother of two children who went to school in Goochland, I was always so thankful for the excellent teachers that they had and that encouraged them. The chapter is also involved in several international programs such as supporting education of girls in Afghanistan, schools in Africa and supporting a new school in Cambodia. Plans for next year include a yard sale in October and continuing the projects we are involved in at present. Members plan to attend the state convention in Richmond in the fall, where they will join other organization members from throughout the state (and country) for training and professional growth. Other officers of Alpha Epsilon are: Ginger Pareene, vice president; Sally Hodges, secretary; and Sandra Barkley, treasurer. In April we will elect a new board. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve my community as president of Alpha Epsilon for the past two years.

I emphasized the spirit of Christmas when questions arose over the past few weeks. My oldest is now winking at me with every answer, so it may be one down and two to go. Three — if you count me. With the Tooth Fairy being the most recent victim of my

reality parenting, I must admit I’m hesitant to take the Santa issue head-on. They are all at ages where some of their friends believe — and some don’t. At some point, my kids will make the choice and I will confirm their decisions. As a parent with no more direction than the next, I must assume they’ll make the right decision. As a father who has spent basically a lifetime putting together toys and stuffing stockings well after midnight

on Christmas Eve, it’s an era I will truly miss. Somehow, over those years, I guess I believed what they did for at least one night a year. And that magic is the stuff that makes for the fondest of parental memories. Making responsible parental decisions also is important, and things we believed as a child are often replaced with bitter realities of life. Next up: Where does the Easter Bunny get all of that candy?

Bulldogs trump Powhatan, fall to Altavista and Bluestone By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

It was one of those weeks for the Goochland High School boys’ basketball team. The Bulldogs dropped two games to Bluestone and posted a win against Powhatan. Then Altavista came to town for a rematch of its earlier contest where the Bulldogs pulled out a dramatic comefrom-behind victory on the Colonels’ home court. “We knew they would come in here ready to play,” Goochland coach Preston Gordon said. “They played much better here than they did at their place. We played much better at their place. They’re a team that is headed for another championship.” The visitors jumped to a quick 4-point lead that found Goochland struggling for the rest of the game to catch up. It didn’t happen. The Colonels worked an offensive inside game to perfection and made it stick on the other end of the court with aggressive defense and steals. “We need to take care of the ball much better,” Gordon said. “In the Bluestone game, more than half of our turnovers were

in 22 points as the Colonels handed the Bulldogs their third loss of the week, 61-36. Juan Thornhill added 12 in a victory that raised Altavista’s record to 8-2. Goochland (7-6) couldn’t get its running game on track, and couldn’t cut the early lead that mounted as the game progressed. Josh Hayden dropped a 3pointer to pull the Bulldogs within three at 8-5, but it never got any closer. Colonels’ coach Mike Cartolaro said the second time around victory was more a result of experience than a revenge factor. “When we played them the first time, we’d been together about 12 hours,” the coach laughed. “They got us pretty good the first time and tonight we looked much better.”. Coming off a state championship in football, the majority of his team had only one week of practice before the first Bulldog matchup. When Goochland and Powhatan High School met at Goochland High School on Jan. 8, the Indians overcame a 6-point halftime deficit to nab their second win of the season. It was perhaps the high point of a difficult season for a hard-working, but undersized, Indians squad. When the teams met for the second time on Jan. 14, the result could not have been any different — and less in Powhatan’s favor. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 42-28 halftime lead and kept their foot on the pedal throughout the second half, burying the Indians 85-53. Head coach Steve Washburn, who has remained unequivocally positive despite his team’s struggles this season, cited the accelerated tempo of play as the main difference between the two games. “Their pressure really made us increase the tempo a lot see Dogs > 13

Collegiate quarterback competes in national all-star game Speight under center in Under Armour All-Star game By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

While one former Collegiate quarterback gears up for the first Super Bowl appearance of his career, another is coming off an appearance in one of the most prestigious all-star games in the nation. Wilton Speight, who has been the starting quarterback at Collegiate since his sopho-

more year, was under center for Team Nitro in the Under Armour All-Star Game on Thursday, Jan. 2. It was a dignified and highprofile way to wrap up a prep career that saw him overcome a serious injury to earn a football scholarship at the University of Michigan.

During the first game of his junior year in 2011, Speight broke his right collarbone while diving in for a touchdown. The injury was so severe that it required surgery. A metal plate was inserted and Speight went on to redshirt the rest of his junior season. Undeterred, Speight came

back stronger than ever, leading his team to the state championship during his senior year, a game they ultimately lost to the defending championship Liberty Christian Academy. Speight became a three-star recruit (one on a scale of one to five, five being a premiere prospect) and was offered a scholar-

ship — which he accepted — to the University of Michigan. Once in Ann Arbor, he will follow in the footsteps of a turgid group of successful Wolverines’ quarterbacks before him, including Tom Brady, Chad Henne and Denard see Speight > 13

Goochland, a team that boasts dynamic athletes in key positions — including guard Cory Alexander, who didn’t play against Powhatan in the first match-up — is most comfortable playing a chaotic, high-velocity affair in which the score ascends into the 70s and 80s. The Bulldogs got their wish: The Indians were forced out of their comfort zone, often throwing up hasty, ill-advised shots that led to Goochland

rebounds which then, in turn, led to more Goochland points. “Last game we handled the pressure and got the shots we wanted,” said Washburn. “This game, we took some bad shots and allowed them to get out in transition and make some easy baskets.” The Indians most glaring struggles were on the defensive side of the ball. They also had a difficult time coming down with rebounds on a consistent basis, thanks in no small part to an extreme size disadvantage on the inside. Goochland has two forwards — Noah Easley and Josh Hayden — who are taller than any player on the Powhatan roster. Easley is 6-foot-6. Hayden is 6-foot-4 “Teams are really killing us on the glass right now,” Washburn said. “We can’t

afford to give up easy possessions either. We have to cut down on the turnovers and make it harder for teams to score than it is now.” The loss is the Indians’ third in a row, and it comes on the heels of defeats to Albemarle and Orange. It’s their third such streak this season: They began the year on a three-game losing skid, won a game against Louisa, dropped three games, won the aforementioned game against Goochland, then lost another three-in-a-row. Their most recent opportunity to end the slide came on Jan. 17 against Louisa. “Until we can get better on the defensive end it’s going to be a struggle to score that many points,” Washburn said. “We need to find ways to get stops. We’re trying a lot of different lineups out there, trying to find a combination that will

give us what we need on both ends of the floor.” “We need to find out who we are defensively,” he added. “Right now, that’s gotta be where we center our attention. Hopefully the offense will flow from that. We’re just struggling getting stops and giving up way too many second-chance points.”

terbacking prototype that bigtime college scouts drool over. He’s big, for sure, but he also has a strong and extremely has an accurate arm. He’s also deceptively nimble, a talent that has led folks to compare him to

Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers. That combination of size and skill led him to become ranked as a three-star recruit by rivals and will offer him the opportunity to earn the right to be mentioned in the same breath as the great pantheon of Wolverines quarterbacks that have come before him. The game that Speight competed in, the Under Armour All-American game, is the premiere prep football all-star game in the country. The list of current NFL and Division I college players that have competed in the game is extensive. Some of the more recognizable names include A.J. Green (current Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver), Julio Jones (current Atlanta Falcons wide receiver), Manti Te’o (current San Diego Chargers linebacker) and Jadeveon Clowney (former defensive end at the University of South

Carolina). This year’s team was coached by Herman Edwards, former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs head coach and current NFL analyst on ESPN. Speight was one of three Virginia players on Team
