School system wants feedback on year-round schedule plan Pilot program would test ‘balanced schedule’ in one of county’s elementary schools By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Lady Bulldogs fall to Bruton The Lady Bulldogs’ D.J. Lopez (24) goes up for a rebound during the team’s 55-44 loss to Bruton last week. The loss ended the team’s season, but head coach Bari Nixon still had plenty of positive things to say about her team’s performance this year. For the full story, see page 12. Photo by Jim Ridolphi

In the coming weeks, Goochland parents will receive a survey in the mail asking for their opinion on a plan to test year-round schooling in one of the county’s three elementary schools. And few people will be as excited to see the results of that survey as Amie Potter. Potter, a former elementary school teacher and current instructional support facilitator for Goochland and Randolph elementary schools, recently was tapped to study the possibility of placing a small number of local elementary students on a year-round — or “balanced” — schedule. In her new role, she will spend the next several months collecting information and attempting to determine if the program is feasible, and what benefit it will have on the Potter students who take part. She will then report her findings back to the county school administration, who will determine whether to proceed with the program. Potter said on Monday that she has already reached out to several school districts that have adopted year-round scheduling — including those in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. — and some, like Petersburg, that plan to implement such programs next year. Right now, Potter said, “there are a lot of things still in the air and a lot of ‘what-ifs.’ ” What is known for sure is that the pilot program, if

Water is a precious commodity to firefighters, who know how to make a little go a long way. Water to fight wildfires or structural fires initially comes from fire department tankers or sidewalk fire hydrants, but additional sources are often needed to sustain operations. Firefighters in rural areas use “dry fire hydrants” to make use of local water sources. The Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) and the Department of Forestry

Brown Motor Parts, Inc. Rt. 6 & 45 at George’s Tavern

(VDOF) work together to make sure firefighters have access to this community resource. Though it sounds like a contradiction in terms, dry fire hydrants are a real and valuable tool for firefighters. A dry fire hydrant is a non-pressurized pipe system permanently installed in existing lakes, ponds and streams that provides a suction supply of water to a fire department truck. These vehicles attach hoses to a dry fire hydrant and pump water out for use at a fire.

Communities can apply now for grant funding from VDOF to add a dry fire hydrant to their area. Last year, more than 30 applications were approved; 20 counties will have a dry fire hydrant installed or repaired under the program. The number of grant requests far exceeds the number that can be approved with the available funding. “The dry fire hydrant provides a more reliable connection between fire department equipment and a body of water,” John Miller, VDOF director of resource protection, said. “The location of these dry fire hydrants undoubtedly reduces travel time, which in turn provides firefighters with a better chance to save more lives and property.”

Virginia’s Dry Fire Hydrant Grant Program is funded by the General Assembly through the Virginia Fire Programs Fund. VDOF administers the annual program’s $100,000 allocation, ensuring 100 percent of it goes into the installation or repair of hydrants. To date, the program has provided 1,603 dry fire hydrants to communities across the Commonwealth. Virginia’s first dry fire hydrant was installed at the Atlantic Fire Department in Accomack County in 1988. The Dry Fire Hydrant Grant Program application deadline is March 31. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Year-round school worth examining By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Growing up, the idea of going to school all year was roughly on par — in terms of popularity — with being forced to eat only green vegetables for the rest of one’s natural life. In short, my friends and I could think of very few worse things. In this nightmare scenario, family vacations and lazy days at the pool vanished, replaced by a never-ending string of school days with no hope of relief in sight. The only benefit we could possibly fathom — other than giving our beleaguered parents the chance to not have to deal with us for three straight months — was that we would now get to see what it would be like to live like our smarter, more disciplined counterparts in Asia and Europe, those serious-minded students who went to school year-round without complaint and were all but guaranteed jobs in middle management the moment they graduated. While year-round school never became a reality for me, the idea has slowly but steadily gained popularity in the United States, even recently earning a stamp of approval from the President. And the benefits it offers to students have not been lost on the leaders of Goochland County’s school system. As they appear to have done

with a number of other issues, school leaders are taking a careful and measured approach to the issue (see story, page 1). To be sure, getting the public on board could prove challenging: Nationwide polls have consistently shown that a majority of adults do not support the idea of year-round schooling, citing reasons ranging from difficulty in planning family vacations to concerns over children missing out on experiences like camp or summer employment. There also are concerns over the cost increases involved in running schools year-round. But eliminating a three-month break at the end of the school year also can offer proven benefits, particularly when it comes to helping students retain what they have learned and spend less time on “catch-up” work at the beginning of the school year. When it comes to students from underprivileged backgrounds — those who may not have the same access to summer enrichment activities or tutoring as their more well-off counterparts — the benefits are even more pronounced. Sure, it might be a tough sell, the proverbial plate full of green vegetables. But if a school system’s mission is to provide the very best possible education for the children it serves, every avenue should be explored — even those a bit less palatable, at first, than others. For those flying the friendly skies, things just aren’t what they used to be By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

O

ne of the most luxurious jobs in America may be losing some of its luster. There’s a shortage of pilots nationwide, largely attributed to lower wages and erratic work schedules. The news is surprising. Most of us consider flying an airplane as a dream job, an exciting way to make a living while making a good salary. And it was that way for years, as we stopped in awe as captains of Eastern, Pan Am and Piedmont strolled through the airport. But, the days of partying flight crews and high-dollar hotel rooms may be a thing of the past for most pilots who fly the thousands of flights daily that crisscross our country. Many sleep in dormitory-type layover locations, or catch naps in pilot lounges, less than the glamorous five-star hotels of the past. My limited insight into this subject consists of one incident that stands out in my mind as the moment of rude awakening regarding pilots, their jobs and what they get paid. When my twins were born, I took a part-time job tending bar at a hotel near the airport. I only worked weekends, and flight crews were the only customers at my bar many nights. They rarely drank, and never more than one beer, but ordered food from the children’s menu and headed back to their rooms. Most arrived tired, walking slow and looking forward to 40 winks. I spoke with them as they waited for food orders at the bar, more often than not the chicken fingers from the kids’ menu. I quickly learned the diet-conscious choices were not a health-related choice, but a financial necessity in an environment where every penny seemed to count. Their uniforms were not the neatly pressed stylish suits we associate with the pilots we see in the movies. The shirts were wash and wear, the patches cheap and

not sewn on, and hats worn and tired. I gained a respect for these crews who fly the commuter routes in America. On a slow night, I spoke with a 22-year-old woman who had just flown in for a layover in Richmond. She ate her food at the bar, and I leaned over and asked her about her job and how she ended up in the cockpit. “I didn’t do well in high school, and took a job as a baggage handler for this airline after I graduated,” she said. After scoring nearly a perfect mark on an exam given to employees for upward mobility programs, she was offered a slot in the airlines’ flight school. She completed the program and found herself sitting in the number 2 seat on a small commuter. “It’s been good. They financed the cost of the school and take it out of my salary, but I still do OK,” she said. “If you don’t mind me asking, How much is OK?,” I sheepishly asked. She thought and figured in her head and said. “Well, after my school costs, I get about $23,000.” “A month?” I asked. “No, a year,” she said. As we talked, I got the feeling she didn’t have a real passion for flying, just a desire to find a good career and pursue it, which she did. “I’ve only had one close call,” she said as we talked on through the evening. Only one, I thought. Now, I believe most pilots make more than the pilot I spoke with in the bar. She was a rookie. But, make no mistake, flying an airplane ain’t what it used to be. That’s bad news for us, the flyer, who depend on experienced pilots to make air travel seem flawless, at least when we get in the air. And, I certainly don’t want them thinking about how woeful their compensation package is when they are landing. Bottom line is you get what you pay for when it comes to pilots. And, in my mind, it’s worth every penny they pay the one who is flying my plane.

What is year-round scheduling? While school calendars may differ, a typical yearround schedule has students attend school for 45 days at a stretch, followed by a 15day break. The break that falls in the summer months, however, is typically five weeks long. Those who support the model usually point to numerous benefits, including the fact that students are less likely to fall victim to what has been termed the “summer slide,” the loss of retention over the summer months. Some of those opposed to the year-round schedule have cited fears of student burn-out as well as concerns about child care challenges. There is a budgetary concern as well: Research shows that schools adopting a yearround model see around a three percent uptick in operating costs, a fact which has led some school districts to convert back to traditional schedules after attempting to go year-round.

Students would not be forced to participate, Potter insisted, and could opt to transfer to a class that remained on a traditional schedule. To Goochland County School Superintendent James Lane, Potter’s selection to lead the study was an obvious choice. “Mrs. Potter’s ability to connect and build relationships among various stakeholder groups and her strong knowledge base regarding learning and child development make her the exemplary choice for this assignment,” Lane said. Potter said that her own interest in the program will likely be an asset when talking to parents, some of whom may have reservations about the idea of abandoning the kind of school schedule that they grew up with. “In my experience so far, there has been some very deep interest from parents,” Potter said, “and there have been some negative feelings as well. Applications open for James River ‘floating classroom’ this summer Application deadline for expedition is March 15 Contributed Report

The James River Association is accepting applications for its annual James River Expedition, a “floating classroom” that takes students down the 340-mile length of the James River. Rising 10th and 11th grade students who live within the river watershed are encouraged to apply before the Friday, March 15, deadline. For the fourth consecutive year, the Expedition is sponsored by Dominion Resources, parent company of DominionVirginia Power, through a $50,000 grant made by the Dominion Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm. “We’ve seen first-hand the positive impact the

Expedition has had on students, giving them a oncein-a-lifetime chance to experience the James River and its ecosystem,” Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation, said. “Dominion Resources is committed to protecting and sustaining Virginia’s natural resources, and this unique program helps create a life-long understanding of what it takes to keep the river clean and healthy.” Students selected for the Expedition will have the opportunity to go on one of three eight-day trips that collectively traverse the entire James River. During the program, which begins June 21, participants will learn about conservation, responsible stewardship and the river’s history while camping and traveling aboard canoes, bateaux rafts and work boats. “For many students, the James River is a source of activities and fun, but

the James River Expedition underscores the complex ecosystem that is ‘America’s Founding River,’ ” Bill Street, chief executive officer of the James River Association, said. “The river touches so many aspects of our environment, economy and quality of life, and this experience brings that all together.” No previous paddling or camping experience is required. Educational staff will provide expert instruction on paddling, camping and teambuilding. The James River Association also is looking for three public high school educators to help lead the Expedition trips. Educators from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Students and teachers can find more information and applications at http:// www.jamesriverassociation. org/expedition or by contacting Georgia Busch at gbusch@jrava.org or 804788-8811, ext. 214.

To feed your favorite feathered friends well next winter, pay attention to what you plant in your garden this spring By Karen Hager Contributing Writer

ost gardeners I know also like feeding the birds that visit their yards, enjoying the bird’s antics while also appreciating their help in eradicating pests from the garden. If you’ve done your homework on purchased birdseed, you’ve discovered that many commercial seed mixes contain a large quantity of filler seeds that birds don’t actually eat. Wheat, oat and red milo are examples of fillers that birds in this area won’t touch. Instead, these seeds end up on the ground — and end up costing you unnecessary money. While it’s certainly possible to purchase only the seeds that birds will eat, you can also grow their food yourself. Put in the right plants and harvest the seed for the birds to eat next winter.

Plants that produce birdseed Sunflowers: If you’re growing your own birdseed, sunflowers are a must. Sunflowers attract the most diverse range of birds, including cardinals, finches, woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and blue jays. In purchased birdseed mixes, “black oil” sunflower seed is the most common variety, but any type of seed-producing sunflower will provide tasty food. There are varieties ranging from 2 to 15 feet tall, in colors from yellow to red. While you can harvest the seeds for winter feeding, you can also do what we do at our house and just clip the flowers from the stems. Hang the flowers or place them on the ground as self-serve feeders. Millet: You may have heard that red millet, a common ingredient in birdseed mixes, has little nutritional value. However, some millets are good for a bird’s digestion, as their hard shells are used as a source of grit to help grind other seeds for a bird’s small stomach. For home growing, the variety of millet most sug-

gested is “Purple Majesty,” which produces both pretty flowers and a seed head that can be dried out and used in winter. The plant can be grown in sun or shade and grows 4 to 5 feet tall, providing your garden with amazing foliage, a lovely flower stalk and goodies for the birds. Echinacea: This native grows easily in home gardens, producing blooms that turn to cone-shaped seed heads that attract finches. Although the purple coneflower is the best-known variety, echinacea is now available in a wide variety of other colors, including pink, white, yellow and orange. Plant in full sun and enjoy the flowers over a long bloom season from midsummer to early fall. While the plants grow and bloom, the birds feast on the cones. Black-eyed Susan: Another garden classic, black-eyed Susan is easy to grow and blooms from midsummer to fall. This native attracts goldfinches, chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, sparrows and towhees. Coreopsis: Also called tickseed, coreopsis is a genus of more than 100 wildflower species, about 30 of which are native to North America, and many of which grow well in this area. Coreopsis attracts cardinals and goldfinches. see Birds > 16

Scrappy Panthers send Bulldogs packing Goochland girls’ basketball team ends season with a 55-44 loss to Bruton High By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

The Goochland High School girls’ basketball team ended its season last week with a 55-44 loss to Bruton High School in Williamsburg. The defeat also ends the Bulldogs’ playoff run. For first year coach Bari Nixon, it’s difficult to see things clearly with the Bruton loss still fresh, but she said she’s satisfied with the progress her program made with this year’s lineup. “I think the overall progress we made as a team stands out the most,” Nixon said. “From our first scrimmage against Louisa to our last game, we improved.” Looking back, the season has its share of highs and lows. “I would say that the District Championship game was a highlight and lowlight. It was a great win, but I feel as though we became satisfied and did not have the same intensity and desire to win after that game,” she said. And, the successes on the road also stand out. “Another highlight would be the win over Buckingham at Buckingham. I think that was the best defensive game we played all year. For me, that was the highlight of the season.” Those highlights came with their share of disappointments, especially during the playoffs. “A lowlight would be the inconsistency we played with during our last two games,” Nixon said. “We would have flashes of great basketball only

Top, Goochland head coach Bari Nixon called Jessica Liddle (13) “by far the hardest worker on the team and the voice of the team.” Right, Goochland’s Carolin Kretzer (4), a foreign exchange student, contributed mightily to the Bulldogs’ success this season.

to be followed by a series of crucial mistakes. Lastly, the game against Bruton was a lowlight because we did not compete the way I know we could have.” And the Panthers seemed there for the taking early in the game as the Bulldogs jumped to a 5-0 lead with several Bruton players already recording fouls. “We got off to a great start against Bruton, and thought we had a chance to win,” the coach said. “Once they put someone on Tierra (Morris), which has happened a few times this

season, we completely shut down.” The Panthers took advantage of the miscues and played aggressive defense that affected the Bulldogs’ offense. Asia Keith and Jessica Liddle were in foul trouble early in the second half. “We just didn’t have anyone to step in and provide the scoring and rebounding that Jessica Liddle and Asia Keith provide,” Nixon said. The girls didn’t quit, but were almost overwhelmed at times by an aggressive bunch of Panthers. “It was a disappoint-

ing performance. I thought we matched up well with them, and thought we could score against them. Mentally, I didn’t think we were ready to compete.” Nixon says goodbye to six

seniors, including Liddle nd Abbie Robinson, each of them all-district players. “She (Liddle) was, by far, the hardest worker on the team, and the voice of the team,” Nixon said. “Abbie Robinson

was a key player in the District Championship game over Amelia. She stepped up and contributed both offensively and defensively.” Khayla Leabough contributed her brand of leadership despite an injury-plagued senior season, and exchange student Carolin Kretzer had a breakout game against Bluestone. Nixon is looking forward to a returning group of players that she said are showing great potential. “We will be young next year with no seniors. We will need to rely on this year’s JV players to put in work over the summer and improve their skills,” Nixon said. She said she knows opponents will be ready for the Bulldogs. “The district, and anyone who scouts us, will know to guard Tierra and make it difficult for her to get the ball. We will need Asia Keith, DJ Lopez and Hannah Liddle to make significant gains in the off-season so we don’t fall apart if Tierra is heavily guarded or denied the ball,” Nixon added. “Morris was a second team All-District performer this year, and I expect for her to be a contender for first team next year,” the coach said. All in all, Nixon said she is pleased with her first season at the Bulldog helm. “If I step back from the loss to Bruton, I think this first season was successful,” she said. “I remember telling the girls my goal was to be above .500 this year, and we achieved that goal. We had impressive wins and we improved. I am content with that and proud of the girls for their dedication.” Bruton ended its season two days after defeating Goochland with a loss to Page County in the quarterfinals of the 2A Regionals.

Bulldogs exit regionals at Bruton By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland High School coach Preston Gordon said he knew his team had its work cut out for them as they traveled to Williamsburg to take on fifth-seeded Bruton in the first round of the regional playoffs. Those fears were fully realized as his Bulldogs ran into an offensive buzzsaw in the form of the 21-1 Panthers who handed the visitors a decisive 89-44 first-round loss. BJ Snead poured in 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to stem the tide of the homestanding senior-laden Panthers, who beat Strasburg in the quarterfinals and gained an appearance against Prince Edward in the semis. “We definitely did not play the type of basketball we had been playing over the past couple of weeks, but I give credit to Bruton’s defense,” Gordon said. “They did not allow us to get in a good rhythm on offense, and that is what a pressing team does. We were not able to withstand their pressure, and it caused us to turn the ball over too many times.” Gordon said the Panthers worked the press defense to perfection. “Sometimes outsiders do not always understand the stress that a press puts on a team, and press may not always be about trapping.,” Gordon said. “A press will wear on a team physically and mentally, which forces players to make decisions that are uncharacteristic of how they are accustomed to performing.” For the Bulldogs, it ends a season where inconsistency was a recurring problem for Gordon’s squad. Playing at high levels in spurts and

turning in some breakout games, the Bulldogs never hit their stride in the final playoff game. Earlier playoff appearances were much more satisfying. “Our conference playoff win at Amelia was our first playoff win since I have come home, and it was nice to get redemption from the two losses during the season and the JRD [James River District] tournament loss they gave us last year,” Gordon said. And, there were games to remember. “Biggest highlights of the season for me as a coach include our win versus

Eastern View in the Holiday Tournament with Josh’s threepoint buzzer beater to win the game,” Gordon said. It only got better for the Bulldogs. “The following game we beat the defending 1A State Champions Altavista, and one of my mentors, Mike Cartolaro, on the road with zero time to prep for the game,” Gordon said. “Beating Buckingham at Buckingham, that hasn’t been done in 15-plus years, will be a win that I will always remember.” When it comes to the final analysis, Gordon said the

results were mixed for this year’s squad. “We had high expectations for this year and set obtainable goals early in the fall,” he said. “Some goals were met while making it to Richmond was not. I knew we had a good team, but we had to play four complete quarters and get contributions from a lot of guys every night.” The coach said he will miss the four graduating seniors, each providing their own brand of leadership on the team. CeeJay Johnson winds up a stellar career for the Bulldogs. “Ceejay Johnson has been a starter since his sophomore

year, and has been a major contributor for us offensively and defensively,” Gordon said. “Ceejay played unselfishly, sometimes too much so, this season and led our team in assists. He was also our second leading scorer, and made the all James River District second team,” he added. David Dyer also made his contributions. “David is a genuine down to earth player, but he plays hard and physical,” Gordon said. “I played football and basketball with David’s older brother, Brandon Myles, and it was great to see David share that same competitive edge as well.” Cephas Harden didn’t let a football season-ending injury deter his unselfish goals on the court. “Cephas Harden was our Charles Barkely/Dennis Rodman when it came to rebounding. He did not care about scoring points, but only rebounding. Cephas played with a lot of intensity and emotions every practice and game,” the coach said. And, finally, Josh Hayden played his final game for the Bulldogs and will be missed. “Josh Hayden’s shoes will be tough to fill as our leading scorer, rebounder and blocker. He made first team all JRD and Player of the Year, along with all Quad Rivers Conference team,” Gordon said. Besides his leadership skills, Hayden also upped his game on the court. “Josh improved his overall game the most since last season, and he has set the bar high for future players. He was a leader on and off the floor by setting a good example for all of our younger

players of what it takes to be a solid basketball player and person.” Jayrell Myles, BJ Snead and Noah Easley will return to form the base of Gordon’s squad next year, and Cory Alexander and Zorian Thornton should fill the other two starting positions. “Darius Morris, Jordan Jefferson and Zorian Thornton are also rising seniors that will also contribute on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor,” Gordon said. “There is some potential for a few rising sophomores to play varsity, but it will depend on how quickly they develop and mature from now until Nov. 10 (first day of tryouts next year).” And with a new season, come new goals and new expectations. “This team has set the bar high, and now we will need to raise it to another level next season, but it will not come without hard work and dedication.” BRUTON 89, GOOCHLAND 44 GOOCHLAND (12-11) — Dyer 6, Johnson 7, Morris 0, Hobbs 2, Jefferson 0, Miles 0, Harden 1, Thornton 0, Hayden 4, Alexander 0, Snead 20, Easley 4.
