Spreading the health Local gardeners’ extra produce helps fuel county food pantry’s mission By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland High School students Madelynn Hyman and Elizabeth Waldrop are organizing the upcoming “Goochland’s Got Talent” competition.
A
s you plan your vegetable garden this spring, growing giddy at the thought of all the fresh fruits and veggies you’ll soon be enjoying, you also may be tempted to make sure you don’t go overboard. How much summer squash, after all, can one family eat? Fortunately, you needn’t worry: Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services will gladly take any surplus garden bounty off your hands at any point during the growing season, then pass it along to help feed Goochland residents in need. According to Sally Graham, executive director of GFCFS, it’s all part of an effort that helps connect local home gardeners, community gardens and farmers markets to make sure no good nutritious food goes to waste. “Working together with home gardeners and community gardens to provide fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables to our clients offers wonderful synergy within the Goochland community,” Graham said. Some local gardeners even make sure to plant a little extra, just so they have some to share with those in need. Have extra eggs? GFCFS Food Pantry accepts extra eggs from backyard chicken coops. Both the produce and the eggs will help supplement the food already provided by the food pantry. The best time to pick and deliver fresh produce and eggs to the food pantry is Wednesday afternoon, since clients pick up their food on Thursdays. The food pantry is located at 3001

When Goochland High School seniors Madelynn Hyman and Elizabeth Waldrop began thinking about a senior project to take on, the two knew a few things for sure: They knew they wanted to do something big, something inclusive and something that would help their local community. So when they hit upon the idea of hosting an event based on the television show “America’s Got Talent,” it seemed like the perfect fit. Their show, titled “Goochland’s Got Talent,” will take over the Goochland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. The only trick now, it seems, is spreading the word. “We’re definitely trying to get the word out,” Hyman said, noting that she and Waldrop have spent the last several weeks putting up posters and peppering social media sites with all the important information about the upcoming show. see Talent > 2

whatever situation has led to the courts getting involved. As a CASA volunteer, “your responsibility is to gather information,” Casey said, and volunteers typically spend their first week on a case scouring as many sources as possible. Working on behalf of the courts, they have access to everything from medical records to school transcripts and frequently make use of both in the reports they write. The reasons children may wind up in the court system are myriad, Casey said, ranging from neglect to abuse to
reports of parental drug use in the home. Some CASA volunteers represent infants who were born addicted to drugs and subsequently placed in foster care while others may work with teens who have been singled out for truancy. Casey, who worked as a CASA in Goochland from 2005 to 2010, vividly remembers being assigned to work on behalf of two teenage girls whose adult sibling was fighting to gain custody of them. It’s tough work, Casey admits, but work that plays a
critical role in protecting the community’s children. In each case she sees, Casey will assign a specific CASA volunteer based on the volunteer’s own strengths and experience. Each volunteer must complete a 35-hour training course, during which they learn the basics of their new role, including how to write reports and how to remain unbiased when dealing with family members who may have opposing viewpoints. Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. “If you close your eyes,” Penny Talen, one of the event’s organizers, said, “you really do feel like you are listening to the radio.” Proceeds from this event benefit Goochland CASA, an organization working within the Juvenile Court system
on behalf of neglected and abused children. Ticket prices for The Rock & Roll Jubilee are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online through Goochland CASA’s website: www.goochlandcasa.org, or by contacting Goochland CASA at (804)556-5876.

When it comes to her volunteers, Casey, a former teacher, is effusive in her praise. “I have the greatest group,” Casey said, noting that the dropout rate in Goochland’s program is extremely low. “They are all so different, from so many different backgrounds, and they are just wonderful at what they do.” As for the dangers of becoming too involved in the lives of the children they represent, Casey said it is something some volunteers do wrestle with. “We talk a lot about that,” Casey said, though firm rules and guidelines — no child, for example, is ever allowed to ride in a vehicle with the CASA volunteer assigned to their case — help keep boundaries clear. of the circumstances they deal with, or that they are always able to let a case go once their work is done. Just last week, Casey said, she received a call from a young girl whose name she recognized immediately. It was one of the young girls whose older sibling had fought for, and eventually won, custody of her and her sister — she was calling to let Casey know that she was now attending the University of Richmond, and that Casey’s work on her behalf had inspired her to pursue a career in social work. Casey, understandably, was thrilled to hear how well things had turned out. “It’s like being a teacher, you know, when a kid comes back and says you made a positive difference in their lives,” Casey said. “That just knocked my socks off.”

Finding a new use for an old space By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Upon a first look, the building that was once Goochland’s Central High School appears as so many old, unused buildings do: shabby, dusty, leaky and drafty, a structure that, despite being abandoned years ago, still offers plenty of clues to the daily lives of those who used it. A tower of desks stacked haphazardly on top of one another. A coffee maker left in the teachers’ lounge. A student’s skilled pencil drawing tacked on a bulletin board. Much of the building, which once served as the county’s black high school and was shuttered for good in 2007, has suffered some degree of damage over the years. But the bones of the structure are still intact, as are the memories for the many students who passed through its wide corridors decades ago. And here, of course, is the challenge the county faces as it works to decide what the next chapter will be for the property. How much can — and should — be salvaged? And what is the best use for the refurbished property? As anyone who has ever fallen in love with an old home can attest, there comes a point where the cost to renovate a structure begins to outweigh the benefits of doing so.
Editorial & Business Office: 6400 Mechanicsville Tpke. Mechanicsville, VA 23111 Mailing Address: P.O. Box 1118 Mechanicsville, VA 23111 Phone – (804) 746-1235 Toll free – (877) 888-0449 Fax – (804) 730-0476
But while certain parts of Central High School appear to be beyond salvage, the original structure could easily be reclaimed and put to new use. As I made my way through the halls last Wednesday, guided by District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez, it was easy to see several strong possibilities for the building’s future. With some repair and refurbishing, Alvarez noted, the building could serve a host of community needs. The gymnasium could serve hundreds of young basketball players, as well as other sports teams in need of a place for indoor conditioning. The former auditorium, complete with a stage, could be transformed into a community room. Former classrooms could be turned into meeting rooms or office space. For now, the future of the property remains uncertain as the board continues to gather feedback (a public hearing on the project is scheduled for Monday, April 7). There certainly will be obstacles along the way, as there is with any renovation project of any scale. But a new, productive life for an old building, particularly one that holds so many memories, is definitely a cause worth supporting. Woman’s Club donation will help rebuild library The Goochland Woman’s Club’s Pat Jeffress, right, recently presented a check for $6,000 on behalf of the Goochland Woman’s Club to Candace Wilkerson, left, principal of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Louisa County at the organization’s spring meeting. Wilkerson’s school was badly damaged after the 2011 earthquake. Letters to the Editor Resident now more clear on facts about Broadband service Dear Editor, I wanted to extend my apologies and send thanks to the County Broadband Task Force and County Board of Supervisors. At a Broadband meeting in 2013 it was commented that “anybody in the county could get broadband, for a cost.” In 2013, I was unable to find that to be true, thus I came to the conclusion it was a false statement, and made comments as such. The facts have now been provided to me. To have Verizon supply infrastructure capable of technology developed in the 1960s to provide broadband to my house, in this case a $400 per month T-1 connec-
tion, of 1.5mbps speed, Verizon sent notification that a special construction cost of $365,456.17 for installation would need to be covered by me, the homeowner. Please take into account that 1.5mbps is much slower that a cable or Fios connection, and it is the slowest connection that DSL would provide. Granted in 1960, 1.5mbps was blazing fast, but today’s average connections are approaching 9mbps, with outlies such as GoogleFiber providing connections such as 1024mbps (~ thousand times faster). This does not take into account that the monthly charges for cable, Fios or DSL are much lower, where available, and typically combo deals including data, phone and TV are available that are priced at levels not appreciably higher than I cur-
rently pay for my single no-frills voice phone line ($75 per month). Conversations abound about how to minimize the digital divide in the country and in the county. Based on what is happening in surrounding counties, it appears the best way to minimize the digital divide is to be able to have another company that is more willing to work with customers and create relationships, rather than profit off of those that have the least to spend. Again, Goochland BOS and Broadband Task Force, thank you for your continued efforts. Joseph Turner District 1 Columbia, Goochland see Letters > 7

Old school should be used to help generate revenue Dear Editor, I really appreciate the Gazette story “County seeking feedback on use of building in the March 20 issue. I also greatly appreciate Goochland County government’s willingness to listen to suggestions on the future of the old Goochland Middle School and hope this letter will contribute to the conversation. My kids attended the old middle school and I have used the track for exercise so I am well familiar with its location
and have some suggestions. First, in disposing of the middle school building Goochland County should “do no harm to the budget and property tax rate. I have lived in Goochland for 35 years and for most of those years our county taxes were fairly stable and increased only a small percentage annually until about 1999. From 1999 to the recent recession my tax bill has quadrupled due to a Board of Supervisors that went on a spending spree and was thankfully replaced in the last election largely as a result of poor financial management. So my best advice is to not do anything with the school that will result in any tax increases for county residents.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor The property should be put back on the tax rolls to generate tax revenue rather than additional expense as a public use facility. To my knowledge, there is no reason to turn the old middle school into some sort of public facility at taxpayer expense. The old building is very inconveniently located for substantial public use and would likely require considerable renovation at great cost. While I realize that no one wants a factory located in their neighborhood, there are probably some light business or industrial uses that would be practical and unobtrusive. This has been done before at Cardwell. The county should initiate a nationwide search for a ten-
ant to put the building to good use and back on the tax rolls. Fencing and landscaping can be used to mitigate any visual impact. It would likely be beneficial in the long run for the county to just give the school to a tenant who would put it back on the tax rolls and save us the
7
www.goochlandgazette.com cost of its demolition. Another advantage would be job creation for some of the hundreds of Goochland High School graduates who each year must leave their home county to find employment. Someone will have to explain an extremely wonder-
ful public use for the old middle school for me to be agreeable to spending my tax money to continue to maintain this outdated and poorly located building. Art Bachman Goochland

County club’s ‘woodchuckers’ help those in need
RENT TO OWN
Club of Goochland strives to help. The club’s 53 members, who meet weekly at Richmond Country Club, follow a longheld motto of “Service above Self. “Woodchucking, as it is affectionately called, has evolved into one of the Goochland Rotary’s major service projects. Members cut, split and deliver firewood to those in the county who cannot afford to heat their homes. Much of the wood is donated by a single resident of the county who prefers to remain anony-
mous. Households receiving the free firewood are recommended by Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services. Lowe Lunsford and Knight Bowles, who jointly head the project, report Rotarians delivered 118 pickup truck loads of firewood to the needy this winter. In addition to providing free firewood to the needy, the club offers wood for sale. All of the funds generated by the firewood sales flow to various charities. Sales this season amounted to more than $3,700. Since launching its Woodchucking program five years ago, the club has generated more than $22,000 in firewood sales. All of the firewood is fully seasoned hardwood. Volunteers work long hours to cut the wood into usable lengths, split it, and deliver it to customers. One cord of wood (two pickup truck loads) costs $150; a half-cord is $95. For more information and to
place orders, visit www.goochlandrotary.com and click on “Order Firewood. Those who wish to apply for free firewood should call Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services at (804) 5566260. Contributed by Goochland Rotary’s Paul Miller.

Contributed Report
It should come as no surprise that Goochland ranks among the wealthiest counties in the state and, indeed, the nation. The 2010 U.S. census reports that Goochland is among the top 10 wealthiest counties in Virginia with a per capita income of $38,553. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that among Goochland’s 8,000 households are pockets of low-income families in desperate need of assistance. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 7.4 percent of the county’s citizens live below the poverty level. It’s these people that the Rotary

hesitant to call this year’s squad the “best” in Collegiate history. “It’s hard to judge when you use that word,” she said. “But you can certainly say we were the winningest. As far as what it means, it’s nice to be successful with wins and losses But what’s most important is that the girls worked hard to get there. It’s more about them than about any coach. I am glad I was along for the ride. I enjoyed working with this group.” Among the leaders of this year’s team was senior captain Camille Boler, who Fleming calls “one of those players who did whatever the team needed her to do.” Anna Wilson, Ymani Breedlove, and Annie Hawthorne, also assumed leadership roles. All three averaged more than 10 points per game. Wilson was first team All-LIS and second team all-state. Breedlove averaged a double-double per game. Hawthorne, a rare five-year varsity starter, will leave Collegiate as the most prolific scorer (1562 points) in school history. She also holds the career record for steals. Fleming calls her “a tough, aggressive player who always plays hard.” Fleming was also quick to praise players like Mary Weston DeVoe, a defensive stopper who “represents a lot of the girls who contributed in less-obvious ways.” “[A lot of our early-season trouble] was scheduling,” Fleming said. “A tough slate, including the Times-Dispatch [Invitational]. But I thought everyone did a nice job of not panicking and we kept working to put things together at the end.” Fleming cited the girls’ willingness to put in extra work in the summer as one of the harbingers of success. She also spoke highly of their chemistry. “I think the starting point for our success this year was that we had a talented bunch of girls who have worked on their game,” she said. “A good number of our girls either play AAU or have committed to playing basketball together in the summer. But what took us further was that these girls really clicked together, both on and off the court. It was a really tight-knit group.”

Goochland Bulldogs step up in opener and three more in the eighth to record their first victory of the season, 7-5. Goochland’s Evan Davis uses full extension in an attempt to snag a throw from the pitcher during the Bulldogs’ season-opening game against St. Christopher. guys.” Farkas said Cutchins also provides other intangible assets. “Joe Cutchins is a first team alldistrict second baseman who is poised to have a great season. He is tremendous leader on and off the field,” the coach said. Ford Slater will also provide leadership from behind the plate. “He is a very disciplined and fundamentally sound catcher
who will most likely be batting near the top of the line-up.” Heath Parish and Slater should provide pop in the Bulldog lineup, and newcomer center fielder Cory Alexander adds an element of speed on the base paths. Though injured for the opener, Colby Noel also has offensive power and should return at third base when he’s healthy.
Evan Davis provided the missing link in the infield for the Bulldogs and will serve in a utility role depending on who is on the mound. Farkas said the early signs look good for a successful season. “With the talent we have, if we can develop and mature this season earlier than later, we see Dogs > 11
Memorable season ends for Collegiate girls Basketball team first to advance to Final Four, had most wins in a season in program history
By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
Two days before Christmas, the Collegiate girls basketball team was at a crossroads. They were coming off a winless showing at the Times-Dispatch Invitational tournament (0-3) that dropped their record below .500 for the first time all sea-
son (3-4). Thanks to the subsequent winter break layover, the Cougars had about a week and a half to dwell on the fate of their season: Would they bounce back stronger than before or flounder in the new year? A little over two months later, the legacy of this year’s team has officially been etched in stone. And it’s a memorable
one. The Cougars countered their early-season troubles with sheer resilience, becoming the first team in program history to advance to the VISAA Final Four. They also won the most games in school history: 17. For head coach Rives Fleming, there are nearly too many memorable moments to list. There were the two wins
over St. Catherine’s, the Cougars most intense rival. There was the buzzer-beater by Annie Hawthorne that knocked off then third-ranked Episcopal, the second-half comeback against St. Stephens on senior night, and the “furious comeback” against Bishop O’Connell in the state quarterfinals. All of these memories coalesce to
form what was, for all intents and purposes, the most successful season in Collegiate girls’ basketball history. Even with the single-season win-total secured, Fleming was humble and cognizant that there have been many talented teams at Collegiate throughout the years. In light of this, she was see Girls > 11
