When Saturday means school Teachers, students putting in extra hours after rough winter By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

fter missing 18 days of the 2013-2014 school year due to bad weather, Goochland High School Advanced Placement teachers found themselves with a tricky problem to solve: How would they help their students — many of whom were already juggling packed schedules — make up

the lost hours of instruction? Easy, they said. They would simply tack on one extra day of school at the end of the week. If getting students — or teachers — to voluntarily attend school over the weekend sounds like an impossible dream, the group that has been gathering at Goochland High School on Saturdays just might have you thinking differently. “Looking at the kids who have been attending, I think it’s just a testament to their enthusiasm and their desire to learn,” GHS government teacher Erin Yearout-Patton, one of several teachers who has been spending her Saturdays helping students with everything from

practicing essay writing to reviewing material they’ve gone over in class, said. Students are not required to attend the Saturday sessions, but, so far, the turnout had been nearly 100 percent. It seems the dedication doesn’t stop there: The teachers were not asked by Goochland County Public Schools to come in and lead the Saturday classes — they volunteered. “What’s so great is the dedication that this has shown all around,” Steve Geyer, assistant superintendent and director of Elementary Education for Goochland County Public Schools, said. “It is a great example of teachers coming together for their students.”

When it comes to deciding the fate of Goochland’s old Central High School, which once served as the county’s black high school during the days before desegregation, there is no shortage of county residents looking to weigh in on the issue. During a public hearing on the proposed FY2015 Goochland County budget Monday night, several of those residents urged the Goochland County Board of Supervisors to preserve funds set aside to help refurbish and preserve the school. Former supervisor William Quarles directed the supervisors’ attention to a petition, signed by 300 residents, which asked the county to retain the original section of the building built in 1938, as well as the gymnasium. During a time when schools were segregated, “this was the only school that African-Americans could attend,” Quarles said. Currently, under the FY2015 proposed budget, the county see School > 2

Some of those funds would need to go toward restoring the gymnasium, which has suffered water damaged due to a leak in the roof. District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez, in whose district the school is located, noted during the hearing that he thought “a lot of good can

The public comment period concluded with Alvarez proposing a series of meetings in the coming months to help gather more community feedback and ideas about the next step for the school. Rotary Notes

Title 1 registration Rotarians often go ‘back to school’ will be held today Organization’s members serve as mentors for county students Contributed Report

Goochland Rotarians can’t seem to finish school. It’s not at all unusual to find them in the classroom. Take, for example, Dr. Richard Carchman. Carchman holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology and is at home in a college lab. He’s the former associate director of the Massey Cancer Center at VCU and a former Philip Morris vice president, responsible for worldwide scientific and regulatory affairs. The Pea Ridge resident chooses

to spend much of his retirement time working with the county’s students. Among other things, he volunteers as a mentor in Goochland’s elementary and middle schools. Rotarian Jesse Lockhart, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, is a retired executive of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. He lives in Goochland Courthouse. Lockhart, too, mentors students in the county. Adeeb Hamzey, another Rotarian, earned a degree in electrical engineering before embarking on a longtime career at Dominion. The Goochland resident also devotes much of his retiree time to Goochland County Schools. In fact, his tireless leadership as a volunteer has

helped make the county’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) summer camp one of the most admired such programs in the state. And there’s also Dr. Richard Costanzo, a Rotarian who lives in Crozier. A professor of physiology at the VCU School of Medicine, Costanzo is often touted as one of the foremost authorities on olfactory (sense of smell) research. Despite a hectic schedule at VCU, he still finds time to periodically talk to Goochland’s elementary students about the workings of the human brain. Another Rotarian who merits acknowledgement is John Wright. Wright, vice

president of a Richmond accounting firm and Manakin-Sabot resident, has a long history of involvement in the school system. He currently serves on the Goochland County School Board, representing the citizens of District 5. Numerous other Goochland Rotarians are school volunteers, far too many to mention here. Whether reading to first-graders, supporting the robotics team, or funding an annual college scholarship, Rotarians are in the forefront. Listening can often yield greatest gifts By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Last week, while attempting to tame some out-of-control bookshelves at my house, I came across a book I hadn’t picked up in years. Titled “Listening is an Act of Love,” the book is a collection of interviews collected and archived through National Public Radio’s Story Corps program. If you’ve never heard of Story Corps, here is the gist: regular folks — we’re not talking about movie stars or high profile athletes here — are interviewed by family members or close friends and the stories they share are then transcribed and archived. Those being interviewed might share a personal memory, an obstacle they overcame, or even just a brief synopsis of their lives to that point. No matter what they say, however, the stories of these socalled “ordinary people” are almost always far more memorable and touching than one might expect. Some, in fact, are simply remarkable. After coming across the book, as you might imagine, I suddenly found a good excuse to take a short break from my shelf-straightening mission. As you might also imagine, that short break soon stretched into an entire afternoon as I paged through interview after interview. Like many people, I have always enjoyed listening to other people’s

stories. And with that comes a gnawing fear that those stories will be lost forever once the storyteller is gone. Stashed away in a box in my closet, I have a small stack of cassette tapes bound with a fat rubber band. Carefully written on each jacket is one word: “Nanny.” On each tape is a part of a long, winding conversation I had with my grandmother before she died, conversations in which she talked about her children, her own parents, and her memories of growing up in New York City, back when snow days were announced by tying tin cans to the back of the trolley cars. These tapes are my some of my most treasured possessions — indeed, my only regret is that I ran out of time to make more. These days, as we scurry about our lives, posting status updates and “liking” our friends’ vacation photos, it’s easy to get the feeling that we are, perhaps, more connected to each other than we actually are. Listening, as the book title suggests, is an act of love — but it is also an act that enriches the lives of both the speaker and the listener. As you go about tending to everything on your to-do list this spring, I hope you also get a chance to sit down, take a listen, and actually get to know someone you already thought you knew. Who knows: It might be the best gift either of you get this year.

Letters to the Editor We must take fresh look at military base security Dear Editor, Recent shootings on military bases are indicative of the future unless changes are made. I am a retired Army officer with a Federal Firearms License, a current FAA aircraft pilot license and a Virginia Concealed Carry permit, and I frequently carry a pocket pistol. But when I visit the PX at Fort Lee, or any other base, I certainly know to leave my pistol at home as required by Federal regulations. However, I should not become a second class citizen when I enter the gate at Fort Lee or any military installation and lose the right to carry a concealed pistol granted by a Goochland County judge. Federal laws certainly trump state laws, but the Federal government needs to do some serious rethinking about who should be authorized to carry concealed weapons on military bases. It is clearly not possible to prevent criminals from illegally bringing concealed weapons on military bases, but it is certainly possible to authorize certain trusted individuals to carry concealed weapons for the protection of themselves and others. And statistics have shown that people with concealed carry permits have not contributed to gun crimes at all. Military bases are no longer walled secure enclaves and are visited by far more military and civilian personnel on a daily basis that can possibly be checked for illegal weapons. So military officials need to get real about who is or is not authorized to carry concealed weapons on their bases. And then enforce the rules stringently. Any base commanders who think that contractors and other folks are not bringing pistols on their bases every day in their vehicles should be relieved for stupidity. The only question is: How can the situation be better controlled? The answer is more realistic rules and cleaner enforcement. Art Bachman Goochland

Parents, volunteers and players helped basketball season Dear Editor, To all of the players, coaches and parents who participated in the 2014 Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities 2014 youth basketball season, we would like to extend our congratulations on a successful season! This winter featured a highly competitive and parity-filled

regular season, not to mention a fabulous post-season double elimination tournament. A huge thank you goes out to our fine volunteer coaches and recreation staff for their work on the early season draft and tournament seeding process. Because of their efforts, there was a high level of parity in this season’s standings indicated by the many ties that took place. Due to the amount of tie records, individual team seedings had to be accomplished by utilizing the average margin of victory for each team that was tied with another. Let’s not forget about the Mighty Mites! This season the 4- and 5- and 6- and 7-yearold age groups ran full court

Future program offerings could potentially include additional camps, clinics for coaches, and different playing times. Lady Bulldogs off and running...finally Goochland softball season underway after multiple snow-outs By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Once the fields dried and the weather cleared, the Goochland girls softball team wasted no time finding their winning ways, recording two wins in as many games last week. The girls began with a harder than normal game with Buckingham, a game that Coach Amy Henneberger said exposed some of the team’s early season jitters. “I thought we made a few mistakes defensively, but it was the first time we had been able to actually get out and play with all the bad weather,” she said. “I thought we looked much better

The girls added one in the third inning and Jackie Tremain held the Raiders to two hits while her teammates posted 12 hits in a five-inning slaughter rule shortened contest. The junior hurler also went two for three at the plate with an RBI in addition to her six strikeouts. Henneberger lost most of her middle infield to graduation last year, but the replacements are quickly playing up to speed. “I was concerned about filling such a large hole in the middle, but they are getting better,” Henneberger said. There are no questions on the offensive side of the ball and it’s obvious this year’s team comes to plate with base hit on their mind. Tuesday’s game was shaky and I’m hoping we got all the kinks worked out with today’s win,” she said. With high expectations, Henneberger said the squad would take it one game at a time, careful not to overlook anyone in a tough district. “It’s early, but, of course, we’d like to take it a step further from last year.
