picture, as the old saying goes, is worth a thousand words. In the case of Goochland resident Taylor Gordon, however, a picture recently was worth a thousand dollars. The picture in question was Gordon’s winning design for the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers poster contest, which took first place in both the Hanover and Richmond metro region competitions. Taylor Gordon, 16, said she picked up photography almost by accident, falling in love with the art form while playing around with a camera at home.

Every dog has its day — and May 3 promises to be a good one for Goochland County canines. As part of A Day in May, the newest incarnation of the annual spring festival many residents may remember from years past, Goochland County Animal Control will be hosting Dog Dynasty, an event organizers promise will be packed with plenty of pooch-themed fun. Dog Dynasty will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the Goochland Elementary School track and will offer, among other events, a costume contest, rabies shots and the opportunity to have your pet microchipped. For those looking for some offleash enjoyment, Goochland Parks and Rec director Derek Stamey promised that the day will offer plenty of other opportunities. “Basically, what we decided to do this year is to take a lot of the smaller events Goochland residents have enjoyed every spring and combine them,” Stamey said, explaining that their goal was to give the county the biggest bang for its buck. “Essentially you’ve got five events in one,” he added, “so it’s really kind of cool.” The 2014 A Day in May festival will take place at the Goochland Sports Complex, located behind see Day in May > 5

Goochland’s Paone selected to take part in summer leadership program Youth conference offers lessons in ethics, civic involvement Contributed Report

Goochland High School sophomore Davis Paone has been selected to attend the annual Hugh O’Brian Virginia State Leadership Program this summer. Students compete for selection by writing an essay and demonstrating activities and values that are hallmarks of the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) program, which is designed to help high school sophomores recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. The GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club sponsors the student’s attendance through their fundraising initiatives. The three-day seminar will include hands-on leadership activities, an opportunity to meet local leaders and explore personal leadership skills while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Davis stood out as an outstanding candidate through his participation in the Math Honor Society and the Blue Ridge Governor’s School, his service as a page for the Virginia House of Delegates, his activity in the Cathedral of Sacred Heart Youth Group, and his leadership as captain of the golf team. Davis aspires to earn an MBA, run a successful business and become president of the United States. Founded in 1958 by actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop the global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. O’Brian was inspired to create the HOBY program after a visit with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who impressed upon the young O’Brian the urgency for change and how education m u s t teach young people to think for themselves.

More than 375,000 young people have participated in the program since its inception. The GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club supports the HOBY program at the local level by funding the attendance of a selected student to the annual state leadership seminar. The GFWC is an international organization with member clubs in every state and 12 countries and a partner organization for HOBY and many other outreach programs. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Goochland taking aim at hunger problem By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The following drama is one that has unfolded in my house many times — probably more than I should admit. In fact, I’m pretty sure it happened last weekend. The location is the kitchen, specifically right around the refrigerator. The time is around 4:30 p.m. The scene is as follows: Two adults are staring glumly into the refrigerator, lamenting the fact that they have “absolutely no food in the house,” and that both of them are “starving to death.” The fact that neither of those statements is actually true (first off, there is actually plenty of food — just not what they feel like eating at the moment — and, secondly, it is very difficult to starve to death when you literally ate less than three hours ago) is a testament to the fact that neither of them has ever actually ever had to face true hunger. When I say true hunger, of course, I am referring to the kind that so many Americans must battle against every day. The kind that single mothers feel when they give up their own meals so their children can have more, or the kind that those on fixed incomes struggle against when the food runs out before the next check comes in.

No, many of us have never actually had to face hunger. But for those who struggle on a daily basis to get even the most basic staples, it can be a formidable enemy. While there are resources available to those in need — including local food pantries — those resources depend on the community to help support their mission. In an effort to continue helping the 1,800 Goochland residents in need of food assistance, local food pantries are working together to launch a community-wide food drive. “Hunger Hurts. Goochland Gathers” runs Saturday, April 26, through Saturday, May 3. The Goochland County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed this week as “Hunger Awareness Week” in Goochland to urge all citizens to actively participate and support the Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services’ Food Pantry, St. Matthew’s Neighbors Food Pantry, and Victory Christian’s Harvest Food Pantry. For many of us, helping support these efforts is as simple as adding a few staples to our grocery carts, or pulling a few cans and jars from our pantries. It’s a simple way to help lift up those around us, and a way to give thanks for the bounty so many of us take for granted every day. For more about “Hunger Hurts. Goochland Gathers,” see the story on page 1 of this week’s issue.

What irks you? Sometimes it’s the little things, and sometimes it’s not By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

About two weeks ago, I began an informal survey among friends as to what irritates them the most in their everyday lives. It was, admittedly, a cheap way to gather information for a column, but I was truly interested in what perturbs people most in a world where little things constantly annoy me. Some of the answers were surprising and enlightened me on

annoying acts I would never have thought of, while others were familiar pet peeves of mine. Most of the responses required thought — not to recall something that got their goat, but prioritizing a list of numerous things that irritate people was the real challenge. My first respondent was ready with his answer in a second and almost seemed like he had been waiting for a change (chance) to vent his frustration at a certain group of drivers. “I can’t stand people who are

making a left turn, but swing their car to the right just before making the turn. What’s the deal with that?” he said. I told him that one would take more explanation for me to understand the problem and commiserate with his problem. I’m not sure that one is going to rate high on what’s on America’s mind when it comes to annoying situations, but I ask the question. While waiting in line at the see Problems > 7

Betty Hinkle HINKLE, Betty Jennings, passed away at her home in Shenandoah on Friday, April 4, 2014, the day of her 71st birthday, lovingly surrounded by her family. Betty was born April 4, 1943, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Jennings and Lena Waldrop Jennings of Cardwell. Betty was a graduate of Goochland High School and Richmond Memorial School of Nursing. She devoted 48 years to her profession as a registered nurse, working in Richmond Memorial Hospital and hospitals in Port Charlotte, Fla., Lewis, Del., and Hampton. She spent 28 years specializing in geriatric care as assistant director of nurses at Avante, formerly Liberty House Nursing Home, in Harrisonburg, and as a registered nurse at Hunter McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. It was Betty’s nature

to care for others and her legacy will remain one of integrity, dedication and above all compassion. Betty loved to travel and capture those memories in photographs. She treasured spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren, and loved calling the beautiful Shenandoah Valley home. She was a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Elkton and a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority since April of 1969. Betty is survived by her husband of 49 years, Dave; son, Chris and wife Cindy, of Stanley; daughter, Lori and husband Robert of Luray; brother, Wayne and wife Fannie of Richmond; two grandchildren, Zachery and Alexis Hinkle; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in both Virginia and North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rebecca Williamson; and brothers, Andrew Jackson Jennings and Richard Jennings. The family received family and friends on April 8, 2014, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. A memorial service was held on April 9, 2014, at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Elkton, located at 2580 Panorama Dr. The burial was private. In lieu of flowers, Betty and the family have requested donations be made to the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Department or the Shenandoah Rescue Squad.

GHS softball, baseball on winning streaks By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The Goochland High School girls’ softball team and boys’ baseball teams finished off pre-Spring Break schedules with several victories last week. The girls beat Cumberland High School 7-1 as pitcher Jackie Tremain threw a two-hitter against the visitors, recording 14 strikeouts in the effort. On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs finished off the Cumberland boys with a 10-0 five-inning win. Joe Cutchins got the win in the effort that raised the bulldogs’ record to 5-2. Both teams made short work of Prince Edward later in the week with the girl’s recording a 12-0 win. Jesse Leroy went three-for-four with an RBI for the Bulldogs. Jackie Tremain got the win and also went three-for-three at the plate with an RBI and scoring three runs. The boys defeated Prince Edward 7-1. Top, Goochland Bulldogs’ catcher Brandy Tester frames a pitch in a game against Cumberland. The Bulldogs beat the Dukes 7-1, thanks in no small part to Tester’s battery mate, Jackie Tremain, who threw a complete game two-hitter while striking out 14 batters. Bottom, Evans Davis extends his glove and his body in an attempt to snap a throw against St. Christopher earlier this season. Davis and the Bulldogs’ baseball team enter into spring break with a 6-2 record after defeating Cumberland 10-0 and Prince Edward 7-1.

Collegiate drops game to Nansemond Suffolk By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

The Collegiate Cougars softball team has struggled in 2014, going winless over their first 11 contests. Their most recent game, a home match-up against Nansemond Suffolk on April 14, saw the Cougars bring eight girls across the plate. It was their highest run total this season, yet their high-powered offense couldn’t overshadow their most obvious flaw on

this afternoon: shaky defensive play. Of the 20 runs scored by Nansemond Suffolk, only seven were earned. All in all, the Collegiate defense committed nine errors. That less-thanideal performance in the field turned out to be the difference. The Cougars fell 20-8. Despite the lopsided final, Collegiate showed much spunk and fight during seven up-and-down, offensive-heavy innings. After falling behind 7-0

after two and a half innings, Collegiate came storming back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. Nansemond Suffolk would pull away in the top of the fourth, however, plating five runs. The visitors would never look back. Brooklynne Carr was the star offensive player. She was 5-for-6 with two doubles and five RBI. Gabi Brugamin had three RBI for the Cougars. Sarah Johnson finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Left, Sarah Johnson and Gabi Brumagin exchange high fives before heading into the dugout. Bottom, Nansemond Suffolk’s Brooklynne Carr, undoubtedly the offensive star of the game, takes a pitch deep into the right center field gap. Carr finished 5-for-6 with five RBI.

Annual Rassawek Spring Jubilee to kick off June 7 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

This June, for the fourth year in a row, Rassaweck Vineyard in Columbia will host its annual Spring Jubilee. The event, which organizers say is aimed at highlighting the area’s cultural traditions, will feature plenty of wine, music, art and a chance to celebrate the rich history of Virginia’s craftsmen.
