Citing Goochland-based CarMax corporation’s continued support of Goochland County Public Schools, the Goochland County School Board announced during a workshop on April 22 that company would be named to the 2014 Virginia School Boards Association’s Business Honor Roll. According to a proclamation read by James Lane, superintendent of schools, during the workshop, CarMax’s contributions “have aided this community in focusing on the goal of providing the best public schools we can for every child who attends them.” see CarMax > 3

Blaze destroys new Hadensville restaurant By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland County fire officials are still investigating a fire that ripped through a new county restaurant on the evening of Tuesday, April 29, causing extensive damage. According
to Goochland Fire Marshal Doug Davies, all employees had left Frida’s Mexican Grill on Broad Street Road in Hadensville by the time the fire department was called to the scene. The cause of the fire remains unknown for now, though Davies said investigators suspect an electrical issue.
Frida’s Mexican Grill, Hadensville’s only restaurant, had been open for just over a month. The owners of the restaurant could not be reached by press time, and a message on the restaurant’s answering service said the phone number had been temporarily disconnected.

The first “Goochland Green Day” was held on Saturday, April 26, at Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing. Sponsored by the Friends of Goochland Parks, Goochland County and Dominion Resources, the event was designed to promote environmental stewardship and showcase the natural and historical significance of Tucker Park. Friends of Goochland
Parks’ board member Leigh Dunn coordinated the activities, assisted by board members Mark D. Williams and Gary Clower. The event began with an early morning Bird Walk conducted by Robert McLemore of the Richmond Audubon Society. Throughout the day, representatives from Goodwill collected used electronic equipment; the James River Master
Naturalists planted a Butterfly Garden; volunteers collected litter; and children created their own drums. Chuck Peple, also a Friends of Goochland Parks board member, gave a historical talk about the Maidens Adventure Inn. ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive will benefit Central Virginia Food Bank Contributed Report
On Saturday, May 10, Central Virginians will have an opportunity to fight hunger in their community by taking part in the 22nd edition of the National Association of Letter Carriers, NALC, “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive. In early May, more than 250,000 food drive donation bags will be delivered by letter carriers to homes throughout

On that date, their letter carrier will pick up their donation and deliver it to FeedMore’s Central Virginia Food Bank where the items will be sorted and then redistributed through FeedMore’s partner agency net-
work. Donations made through “Stamp Out Hunger” in Colonial Heights will be delivered directly to the Colonial Heights Food Pantry, a FeedMore partner agency. Last year, 161,217 meal equivalents were donated to FeedMore’s Central Virginia Food Bank through “Stamp Out Hunger.” “We would love to surpass
the radio about a local man who was reportedly suffering a mental health crisis. Though slowed by traffic and a torrential afternoon downpour, Agnew eventually reached the scene and was able to immediately employ a number of techniques discussed in the program. The verdict? “It worked as advertised,” Agnew said. Out of all the information provided during the CIT training, Agnew said he found the visits the group took to several mental health facilities to be the most compelling. Agnew said the visits — and several frank conversations with those staying at the facilities — helped offer a window into what those suffering from
mental illness deal with on a daily basis. Agnew also said that he’d like to see all of his officers go through the training. If nothing else, Agnew said, the program could help foster better communication between the sheriff’s department and other community organizations working to help those dealing with mental health issues. “I think in law enforcement, particularly if you’ve only been on the job for a few years, you don’t always have an understanding of what other community service organization have to go through,” Agnew said. “It’s a good thing for us to know that,” he added

In June, which the company has designated as CarMax Cares Month, two teams of seven volunteers will work with students during the schools’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) camp. “On behalf of the 900-plus CarMax associated working in Goochland County, we thank you for this honor,” Stuckey told the board after the proclamation was read. “We are very proud to call Goochland our home and are proud to be able to give back to the community.”

George Morrison MORRISON, George Franklin, 93, of Richmond, formerly of Goochland, passed away Tuesday, April 29. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Grubbs Morrison; brother, Chancey Nolin Morrison; and sisters, Helena Morrison Phillips and Louise Morrison Phillips. He is survived by his twin brother, John Arthur Morrison; and a host of nieces and nephews. George was a World War II U.S. Army Morrison veteran, serving in France. He was employed by the Texaco Corporation as a technician and retired in 1982. After retirement, he enjoyed farming and gardening. In Richmond, he would be found sideline with his lifelong friend Barry Gibrall cheering on the Cadets. Michael was truly grateful for the enduring friendships that blessed his life. County holding tight to ‘penny wise’ ways By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Many of us have heard this old saying, offered time and time again by people who know a thing or two about saving money: “Watch your pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves.” Goochland, it seems, has gotten fairly good at watching its pennies. Several months ago I had the pleasure of spending the better part of an hour with county supervisor Ken Peterson, who was then wrapping up his second year on the board. During our meeting, Peterson offered a detailed account of just how the county leadership had managed, over their first two years in office, to rein in spending, avert a looming financial disaster in the Tuckahoe Creek Service District, and fully fund the requests made by the county school system — all without raising the property tax rate by even half a cent. To be sure, it wasn’t a walk in the park: the financial maneuvering required to refinance the county’s debt, for example was so complicated, Peterson joked, that it even had the bankers they worked with scratching their heads. Peterson, who has an extensive background in finance, took the lead in that particular effort, but all the board members appear to have held tight to their campaign

promises about fiscal responsibility. This year, once again, the penny-watching seems to have paid off: Without raising taxes, the county was able to add positions and improve the services offered to residents. In a day and age when “budget time” can easily devolve into a contentious, unproductive slugfest, Goochland’s county leaders appear to work well together, respecting the individual perspective and expertise each brings to the table. Instead of haggling and finger pointing, they have been able to focus on finding solutions. My two cents? It’s been a heartening process to watch — and Goochland residents are all the better for it.

The folks at Goochland County Parks and Recreation, County Animal Control and numerous other organizations and volunteers should be commended for putting on a wonderful event that included something fun for all ages. s summer nears, all is well in the garden: new plantings are growing, beds are tidy, and flowers warm their faces in the sunshine. It is a time to enjoy the fruits of one’s labor — so one would think. But the respite is shortlived when Japanese beetles begin their annual swarm, harkening the season’s arrival. They wear patience thin as they treat well tended gardens as their private food courts. Being ready for their onslaught can mean managing them with a safer, gentler arsenal of weapons and can make this time less stressful for frantic gardeners as well as less taxing on susceptible plantings. In late spring or early summer, the first wave of beetles with shiny, metallic green bodies and copper colored wings begin their emergence out of the ground where they had been comfortably maturing. They chomp, leaving skeletonized leaves as their calling card. The damage is described as lacy-looking, since they chew the tender leaf tissue, leaving the veins intact. This is unsightly and detrimental if allowed to progress, especially to young plants. When beetles find a food source, they send out scents that lure other beetles to the

Registration now open for 4-H Junior Camp Contributed Report
Looking for something different for your children to do this summer? Goochland 4-H Junior Camp will be held during the week of July 21-25 at the Jamestown 4-H Center in Williamsburg. Camp is open to young people ages 9 to 13 years old. Campers select from a variety of classes, including kayaking, crafts, archery, wild life, canoeing, fishing and leather crafts. Jamestown 4-H Camp is situated on 16 wooded and open acres, located outside of Williamsburg along the banks

hen it comes to welcoming spring for foodies, nothing signals the new season quite like the first fresh bunch of asparagus Asparagus has been called the “Food of Kings” because King Louis XIV of France loved it so much. Sadly, the regal asparagus has a short growing season, from about April to June in the Southeast. It’s running late this year in many areas, though most local growers should start harvesting in the next week or two. The best asparagus is that which has been most recently picked. So if you find asparagus at a farmers market, snap it up (and try out the recipe at the right). If you happen to be new to this super stalk, here are a few tips to get you started:
1) Asparagus
Shopping for asparagus Look for firm, dry and compact tips. Avoid limp spears and wet, mushy tips. Cut ends should still be moist and not dried out. A good sign that the asparagus will be fresh is if markets store them standing up with cut ends on ice or in cold water. The spear ends should remain dry. This also is a great way to store them at home, in the refrigerator. Alternatively, wrap cut ends in a damp paper towel, place in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator up to three days. Either way, keep the cut ends moist and the tips dry. Preparation The tough, woody-cut ends of asparagus need to be removed and discarded. To do

Ingredients 5-6 strips of bacon 1/2 T salt 8 oz. bow tie pasta 1/2 T pepper 1 lb. fresh asparagus, cut into 1” diagonals 1 1/2 cup shredded fresh Parmesan cheese, divided 3 T butter 1/2 cup half and half 1/2 cup onion, diced 1 T parsley, chopped 1 T garlic, minced Cook bacon until crisp; crumble and reserve drippings. Cook pasta and asparagus together in boiling salted water for 4-5 minutes; drain. Place butter in skillet with reserved bacon drippings; saute onion and garlic just until tender-crisp. Add pasta and asparagus; toss and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Combine 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese with half and half; toss until coated. Asparagus Gratin Makes 6 to 8 servings 2 pounds fresh asparagus spears, prefer• ably thick 3 tablespoons butter, divided use • 2 tablespoons flour • 1/4 cup heavy cream • Salt and pepper to taste • 1/2 cup to 1 cup freshly grated • Parmesan 1/2 cup bread crumbs • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 1. Trim asparagus spears and reserve woody ends. Fill a large skillet halfway with water. Add woody ends, cook 5 minutes, then remove them with a slotted spoon and discard the ends. Add the asparagus spears and cook about 2 minutes, until partially cooked and still somewhat crisp. Drain, reserving the liquid, and place the spears on paper towels.
YOUR TABLE: Cooking Tips and Recipes 1. Snap off tough ends of asparagus and discard. Cook remaining spears in boiling water 1 minute. Drain and reserve 9 spears. Coarsely chop remaining asparagus. 2. Unfold piecrust and roll into a 14-inch circle. 3. Fit crust into 11-inch tart pan. Line crust with foil and fill with dry beans. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 12 minutes. Remove weights and bake for 2 more minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees. 4. Melt butter in skillet. Add onion and sauté 5 minutes until tender. Set aside.

June 7 designated National Trails Day Contributed Report
Forestry officials invite citizens out to Virginia’s state forests to celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 7. Many of Virginia’s 23 state forests offer miles of trails for walking, hiking and bird watching. Trails allow for recreation and are described as “a great way to get the public to increase their physical activity in an outdoor setting.” Trail users can explore in solitude and find peace and tranquility. Or they may join family or friends for an outdoor social activity. Passive recreational opportunities, such as walking, hiking and canoeing, are provided free of charge. Horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, fishing and trapping all require a State Forest Use Permit when persons 16 years and older enjoy these activities on a state forest. Located in the Richmond area, the Appomattox-Buckingham, Cumberland, Zoar and Prince Edward – Gallion state forests offer more than 60 miles of trails. Free course offers path to become a health advocate Contributed Report
The Congregational Health Promoter serves as an advocate and resource person for people within their own church community to help promote health and wellness. A free, one-day training course to earn this designation is being offered through the Congregational Health Program in the Pastoral Care Department at Centra in Farmville. Participants will receive a certificate when they finish the course. They may be able to share information in their church about health issues, help people find what they need to take care of their health, encourage and support your church family to take care of the body, mind and spirit. The course will be offered on Saturday, June 14. The location is to be announced. Days off don’t deter Bulldogs By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
A
fter a week of almost constant rain that made play on athletic fields nearly impossible, the Goochland High School Bulldogs returned to the diamond with a vengeance, recording a 10-0 drubbing of visiting Lunenburg. “We were just happy to get back on the field,” Goochland coach Wes Farkas said after the win. “After missing a week of games and a few practices, I was hoping to give our pitching staff the opportunity to knock some rust of and tweak a few things going into next week,” he added. Coleman Duty got the start but was only needed for a couple of innings. Once Farkas saw the contest’s result past resolved, he pulled his starters and gave relievers the chance at some work. “The game plan from the beginning of the game was to give Coleman two innings and Tanner two innings, and see how the game was going at that point,” Farkas said. “Both guys pitched well and throw a lot of strikes, especially first pitch strikes. This allowed them to stay ahead of the batters and make their pitches. “We hope to carry this momentum into next week with three games on the schedule,” the coach added. They’ll need all the arms they can muster as the rain postponements have jammed up the remaining weeks of play. The Bulldogs play three this week. “We have Amelia Tuesday, Bluestone Wednesday and Central again Thursday. Bluestone beat us at their place

The coach isn’t overlooking the rest of the schedule, either. “My goal is to have them prepare well for all three games, not just Wednesday. Amelia graduated some extremely talented players from last year, but beat us at our place last year, so I feel like our guys will be ready as we enter game play on Tuesday,” he said. The Bulldogs took advantage of early mistakes by the Charger defense and inconsistent pitching to mount a 30 first inning lead and never looked back. “We hit the ball well, con-
sidering we had limited practice this week. I feel like we have the potential to hurt any time from top to bottom in our line-up,” Farkas said. Joe Cutchins went three for three with an RBI, and continues to lead the Bulldogs in several categories. “Joe has been our offensive catalyst the past few weeks. He is a great leader on and off the field,” the coach said. Duty got two innings of work and didn’t hurt his his record of five wins with an ERA of 1.00. Obituaries continued from >5 and Virginia Elliott; grandchildren, Alex, Jessica, Hailey and Thomas Underwood, Stephanie Toole, Cori Ferguson, Daniel and Aaron D’Amato; great-grandson, Kaleb Toole; several brothersin-law and sisters-in-law, and many other family and friends. Bill was born in Indiana and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, E Battery, 2dBn (Rein) FMF before moving to Virginia in the early 1970s to work at Luck Stone Corp. He began his career as a quarry manager and retired 26 years
later as division vice president. Bill was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Indiana York Rite, Scottish Rite of Richmond, and the Shriners of Richmond. He was an avid hunter that looked forward to autumn weekends in the woods with his hunt club. His many interests included travelling, especially on his Canada vacations, “RVing,” golfing, NASCAR and spending time with his grandchildren. The family received friends on Tuesday, April 29, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home at 11020 W. Broad St. in Glen Allen. The Scottish Rite performed a ceremony on

Artichokes continued from >11 in an airtight bag. Don’t worry about any holes the thorns might have poked in the plastic. Before cooking, rinse them under cold, running water. If you’re cooking them whole, cut an inch or so off the stem so they’ll stand up in the pot. How to cook them That’s up to you, really. We’re partial to the way Mom did: Stand them up — stems up or down — in a pot filled with about 3 inches of water. Cover, bring to a boil and simmer for about 25 to 40 minutes (depending on size) until the stem is tender when you stick a fork in it and a leaf near the center pulls out easily. If necessary, add more boiling water.

No need for forks Artichokes have a mild, nutty flavor, so they need a dipping sauce. To eat one, pull the leaves off one at a time and dip them into a vinaigrette or whatever sauce sounds good to you. Pull the bottom half of each leaf through your front teeth to remove the soft, pulpy part on the inside — eat the pulpy part and toss the rest. Keep at it until all but the palest leaves are gone, then pull the remaining leaves off all together. You’ll see a fuzzy center, which you should cut away from stem end. The stem end is the heart you pay big bucks for frozen or in jars or cans. Cut the heart into pieces, then dip them into the rest of the sauce.
