Delegate set to discuss Medicaid issue tonight Contributed Report

Self-governance and Medicaid expansion will be the topics of discussion at the Goochland Tea Party meeting tonight at 7 p.m. Del. Peter Farrell (R-56) will bring those in attendance up to date on the pending state budget and Medicaid expansion. The clock is ticking on a state budget that must go into effect by July 1 in order to keep local governments and schools funded for the next fiscal year. According to Tea Party members, the stakes couldn’t be higher as the Commonwealth is in unchartered territory. Questions for Farrell include whether or not legislators pass a budget by June 30, and if they will expand Medicaid. Mark Herr, president and co-founder of Tennessee Center for Self Governance, will share his thoughts on how to return the government to what he sees as its proper role by restoring the balance of power. The Goochland Tea Party meeting will be held at 2955 River Road West in Goochland.

Several organizations have partnered with Rassawek Vineyard for annual Spring Jubilee By Roslyn Ryan Editor

While wine, food, music and crafts will certainly be on full display during the fourth annual Rassawek Spring Jubilee on June 7 and 8, several area service organizations say they are happy to take part for another reason altogether. Ten percent of the proceeds from this year’s event will be given to Richmond Habitat for Humanity’s Habitat for Heroes program, which offers a path to home ownership to those actively serving or who have served in our nation’s armed forces. To Jack Martin, president of the Rotary Club of Goochland, the “family friendly and community-minded spirit” of the

event is the reason his group will be a part of this year’s jubilee. The Rotary Club is one of several area groups who have partnered to support this year’s celebration, joining Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services; the Families of the Wounded Fund, Inc.; the Goochland Education Foundation; Second Union Baptist Church Rosenwald School; and Goochland’s Habitat for Humanity. To Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’Adair Roper, the two-day festival is the perfect way to highlight her organization’s mission. The partnership with Rassawek helps support “our long-standing partnership with Goochland Habitat for Humanity and recognizing our community veterans as heroes,” Roper said. The Rassawek Spring Jubilee will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. Rassawek Vineyard is located at 6276 River Road West in Columbia. Goochland Relay For Life will host first day-time event

Dancer continued from >1 brightest stars. Karlie Lineberry, 15, has been involved in Irish dance for four years, and has already distinguished herself as one of the top dancers in the Crossroads Irish Dance Troupe, the competitive dance team made up of students from Richmond’s Marianne Kelley School of Dance. On June 26, she and her mother Kellie will travel to Dublin, Ireland, where Lineberry will compete in the All Ireland Championships. Considering she has never competed internationally, Lineberry admits to be a little apprehensive about her upcoming performance. If practice makes perfect, however, Lineberry should not have much to worry about. “I’m a little nervous, but I do it so much that I know I know it,” said Lineberry, who already dances every day but has amped up her training in advance of the competition. “I think I’m ready.” While dance has been a part of Lineberry’s life for

telling their stories for why they Relay, as well as raising much needed dollars which benefit American Cancer Society programs, research, education and advocacy. This year’s event, “Luau For Life”, is the first day-time event with Opening Ceremonies beginning at noon followed by the Survivor Lap around the track. This event involves the entire family, offering food, games and music available all

almost as long as she’s been walking, she spent the first years of her training studying ballet. It was only after a visit to Williamsburg’s Busch Gardens theme park, where she saw a performance of the Irish dance show Celtic Fyre, that she decided to commit herself to this new style of dance. And a commitment it was. Though Lineberry picked up Irish dance fairly quickly, she said, mastering the more “militaristic” style — as compared to the fluid motions of ballet — took some getting used to. “Irish dancing is much more precise,” Lineberry said, “there’s not nearly as much improvisation.” One other small — yet significant — difference between the two styles of dance is the costumes. During an Irish dance competition — or “feis” as they are referred to in dance circles — top performers wear distinctive, often heavily bejeweled and embroidered dresses that can weigh several pounds. The travel commitment involved can be an adjustment for dancers and their families

day from teams and supporting vendors. Those taking part will have the opportunity to participate in Zumba, get dessert at the Cake Wall and test their aim in the Corn Hole Tournaments. The Luminary Ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m. For more information about Goochland Relay For Life, visit www.relayforlife.org/ goochlandva or contact Val Pace at (804) 763-9187 or valpace@ymail.com.

as well. Most competitions take place in the Northeast, in states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey, meaning expenses can add up quickly. In advance of her trip, Lineberry has begun fundraising and has started a page through the site GoFundMe (www.gofundme. com/7h5du8). When it comes to her future plans, Lineberry is, naturally, still weighing several options. She’d love to open her own studio, perhaps teaching a combination of half ballet and half Irish dance classes, or maybe dance in show like the one that inspired her during that fateful trip to Busch Gardens. And what if, perhaps, certain famed Irish Dance show happened to have an opening? “If I got the opportunity to do Riverdance,” Lineberry said, “I’d take it in a heartbeat.”

When complaining, let’s put first things first By Roslyn Ryan Editor

File this under “odd news:” A school talent show performance in North Dakota recently was canceled after the mother of one of the students involved claimed the act was promoting racism. The reason? As it has been widely reported, the mother was concerned because the students were performing a rendition of the Village People’s megahit Y.M.C.A, and one of the students was going to be dressed as a Native American. Now, I have a long-standing personal policy about telling people what they should — or shouldn’t — find offensive. Having walked in only one person’s shoes (my own) for the last several decades, I try to give people a pretty wide berth when it comes to their personal preferences. And while I can’t really empathize with people who are offended by certain songs, or phrases, or costumes, or well, just fill in the blank, they do have my sympathy. It must be a tough way to live. But — and I know I may be treading on some very thin ice here — is there may be, just may be, the possibility that we as a society may take things just a teensy bit too seriously sometimes. Case in point: Last week, a horde of environmentalists went berserk over a comment game show host

Pat Sajak made on Twitter about global warming. Is that the Pat Sajak, you ask, who no one in the history of Earth has ever asked what he thought about climate change? Is this the same Pat Sajak who has no background in environmental science, and has basically spent the last 30 years handing out sets of matched luggage to people with better-thanaverage spelling ability? He is that man. Yes, my friends, I think we may have finally gone too far. So I am going to respectfully make a request — an entreaty, if you will — one that I would ask all of the “perpetually offended” among us to please at least consider. Be offended by anything you like — tasteless pop songs, bad jokes, dogs wearing sweaters, whatever! — but just wait to sound off about it until after we have solved a couple of the larger issues facing humanity. After all, if we have the time and energy to complain about a young man in North Dakota performing an uber-cheesy pop song from 1978, then surely we have already dispatched of poverty, unequal access to quality education, chronic hunger, nuclear proliferation and cancer. Until that day comes, let’s just try to keep things in perspective, shall we?

Never underestimate the untold sacrifices By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Vietnam seemed like a location on another planet to an immature high school junior in 1967, and death and disaster on a battlefield were foreign images to most of us. All of us, except the unlucky ones who were actually fighting the war in Southeast Asia. It was a time of uncertainty for many draft-aged youth, but one thing was abundantly clear: If you messed up in school and left, you were headed for Vietnam. We had classmates who, for various reasons, were now serving. Some of them were the wild bunch that quit school early and found themselves at Fort Campbell faster than you can say, “You’re drafted.” Others forbad the inevitable and joined on their own, some in the U.S. Marines, others in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. Even with some of our classmates serving, the idea of war had not sunk into many of our minds. This was our first life experience with real death and destruction on battlefields and jungles in Southeast Asia. News passed around campus quickly when one of our own died in battle in Vietnam. He

returned home quickly and his funeral was packed with friends, family and fellow students. As I passed by his open coffin, Vietnam became real for me, and I was rudely awakened to the sacrifices required to maintain a democracy. So, I think of that classmate who willingly went when called, served with honor and dignity, and paid the ultimate price on the battlefield on this Memorial Day 2014. No doubt, countless other Americans have made equal or more gallant gestures of heroism and patriotism without uniforms. But, this is Memorial Day, and it is a special time reserved for the men and women in uniform who served, and those who still serve today. Their personal sacrifices should never be underestimated or taken for granted, as they silently serve with honor, dedication and pride. Thousands of American soldiers died before my classmate met his untimely death in the jungle, and many more followed him home in flag-draped coffins. I looked at all of them in a different light after his death, and I never again assumed that free-

dom came without a cost. As I’ve covered numerous veterans’ events, I note the looks on the faces who seem to show up at each and every one of these venues. They are solemn, committed and still loyal to a cause that required everything they had, and more in some cases. Their loyalty is unwavering. So, on this Memorial Day, let us recommit to taking care of our returning veterans, making sure they receive the best care this country has to offer. It’s small repayment for the sacrifice they — and their families — have made to ensure the safety and security of our great nation. The faces in those crowds tell the story of sacrifice, valor and untold heroism. The lines on their faces tell of fallen comrades, lost innocence and a stern sense of patriotism. Through it all, our veterans still believe in the dream that is America. So should we. And, as a grateful nation, we stand up and take notice on this day when we honor our brave citizens who wear uniforms and perform the work that is vital to keeping a democracy free. And the countless ones who never made it home.

Bulldogs live to fight another day Team gets opening win in conference playoffs By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

P

lacing your emotions on hold and attacking the problem at hand is often a task that is easier said than done. But, that’s exactly what the Goochland Bulldogs did earlier this week when they captured an opening 3-2 win over Amelia in the Conference 34 Quad Rivers playoffs. The Goochland community was shocked and stunned

to learn of the death of one of its own, Cole Starke. The GHS 2013 graduate passed away while on a camping trip earlier this week. Players fought back tears as an emotional opening ceremony honored the former Goochland shortstop. It was made even more special with the attendance of Cole’s family. “It’s been a tough situation for our team,” Coach Wes Farkas said. “I think Cole was on everyone’s mind when we took the field today.” Players wore Starke’s number 3 on their sleeves, and his jersey hung in silent remembrance of the fallen teammate. Amelia starter Andrew Williams kept the Bulldogs guessing for the first four innings. “He kept our hitters off balance the early part of the game,” Farkas said. The Raiders had taken a

1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Austin Chauncey doubled and produced a run. Goochland answered in the fifth inning when Ford

game, Colby Noel spoiled a suicide squeeze attempt when he dove and caught an attempted bunt on the fly and doubled the runner at third.

“There was no lack of drama here today. I was proud of the way the guys hung in there and got the job done.” Wes Farkas Head coach Slater blistered a ball through the infield that ended up rolling up all the way to the center field wall, scoring Cory Alexander and Michael Nadder. The 2-1 Goochland lead quickly disappeared when Amelia loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning. After the Raiders tied the

“I went all out for the ball,” Noel said. “That’s the game right there so you gotta catch that.” The Bulldogs took advantage of their seventh inning at bat when Noel singled and worked his way to third with a stolen base and a wild pitch. Nadder got the winning RBI, and the Bulldogs escaped

and lived to fight another day, presumably against Nottoway on Wednesday. Tanner Bradshaw went the distance on the mound and recorded the win for the Bulldogs. “There was no lack of drama here today,” Farkas said. “I was proud of the way the guys hung in and got the job done,” he added. Winning the game in the bottom of the seventh inning provided a distraction for the grief-ridden team, but their thoughts quickly returned to their teammate and friend once the game was over. “It was an emotional struggle out there today. He was a good friend, and it was hard to get my head right today,” Noel said. Farkas said emotions were high on his team and that could have provided the extra spark the team needed. “Our guys wanted to go out there and be tenacious for Cole, and they did that. They didn’t give up on plays,” the coach said. “It’s been an emotional weekend,” Farkas said. “You don’t know what to expect when you take the field, but these guys were resilient and got the win today,” he added. The last six games have been nail biters, and Farkas said he hopes his team pushed through with the opening playoff win against Amelia.

Pitcher Tanner Bradshaw tallied a victory against Amelia.

“It’s been a dogfight the last six games.” It’s win or go home again when the team takes on Nottoway this week. Whenever and wherever the team plays, one thing is for certain. They’ll take the field with Cole on their minds. “We’ll take that energy and those emotions with us as we go through the rest of this season.”

Nine questions with ... Nick Roth By Mike Schoeffe Sports Writer

T

he 2014 season was a bittersweet one for the Benedictine Cadets baseball program. Despite winning their final four games and finishing with a record of 17-11, they failed to qualify for the playoffs, thereby missing out on a chance to capture the third state title in program history. Among the Cadets’ leaders this season — both on the mound and at the dish — was one Nick Roth. Last week, the multi-talented athlete took time to answer a few questions about the leaders on this year’s team, his history with the game of baseball, and
