emperatures had nudged into the high 80s last Saturday, as hundreds gathered at the Goochland Elementary School track for the 2014 Relay For Life event, but that didn’t stop Cedric Tyler from getting down. Tyler was one of hundreds of people taking this year’s “luau” theme to heart, spending the afternoon dancing in a homemade grass skirt alongside other members of his Deep Meadow Correctional Center 60-person team. This was the first daytime event in the 20-year history of Goochland Relay For Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and organizers admitted the heat may have kept some away. Still, for those who were there, the passion for fighting cancer was clear to see. A stone’s throw away from the Deep Meadow tent sat Jeanne Grady, a member of the Mizpah Christian Faith Walkers’ team and a woman who has seen the ravages of cancer up close. see Relay > 4 Photo by Roslyn Ryan

Cattle producers from Goochland and Powhatan counties recently attended a series of meetings about stream exclusion systems hosted by the Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District and Virginia Cooperative Extension. Monacan SWCD District Manager Keith Burgess and VCE Agent Rachel Grosse spoke at the May 20 meeting entitled “Pasture Layout Considerations” at the Powhatan Library. The meeting began with a short video interview of Ronnie Nuckols, who commented on the improvements of his operation since completion of his system. Grosse posed questions to farmers about the goals and objectives of their farms and offered information on types of operations, forage species, calving seasons, and other topics. Burgess detailed different types of alternative water systems that Monacan District has been involved in designing including gravity, pressure, spring development, and limited pond access systems. He showed photos of District projects and offered step by step instructions to install a frost free water trough. The second meeting was held at the farm of Ronnie Nuckols, located in eastern Goochland. Its purpose was to show potential participants a completed stream exclusion system and all of its associated advantages. Nuckols improved 110 acres of pasture by completing a large exclusion system in 2012. Funding for his project came from Monacan District and the VACS program. Monacan District awarded Nuckols its Clean Water Farm Award this year. He was also recognized by the Goochland Board of Supervisors for his outstanding farm conservation practices in a resolution presented in January.

Students raise funds to help families of wounded soldiers Money raised by selling flowers and handmade beaded bracelets By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A group of students at Goochland Elementary School recently proved that big ideas — and big hearts — can sometimes come in small packages. On June 6, students from Heather Black’s first grade class presented a donation of $101.25 to the Families of the Wounded Fund, a Midlothian-
based organization that assists families of soldiers recovering from combat-related injuries at McGuire VA Medical Center. Raised through a schoolwide sale of flowers and beaded bracelets made by Black’s class, the funds were presented during an assembly in the GES cafeteria on the last day of the school year. On hand to accept the donation were Marine Sgt. Brandon Hipp and George Nyfeler, a board member of Families of the Wounded fund. Also on hand were Goochland’s American Legion Post Commander Joe Wadle
and Second Vice Commander Robin Elder. It was thanks in part to Elder’s efforts, Black noted, that the class was able to connect with Post 215 in the first place. After her students decided to donate the money they had raised to a military-related cause, Black went online to try to find the right organization. When she came upon the Facebook page for Post 215 — recently created by Elder in an attempt to improve the Post’s presence on social media — she knew she’d found the right place. The entire project, from the

Supervisors seek input on proposed strategic plan for Goochland County Board also plans to offer ‘report card’ to residents Contributed Report
In the fall of 2013, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors undertook the creation of a Strategic Plan for the county. Feedback gathered from citizens, businesses and employees helped to formulate the plan. The plan provides the over-arching framework for the county’s work and focus. Realization of the vision, mission and goals occurs through the achievement of the objectives identified in the plan. The objectives are achieved through strategies and initiatives that take place within each county department. Through the county’s budget process, departments are allocated funding to carry out the strategies and initiatives identified in the Strategic Plan. Annually, the Board of Supervisors plans to provide a “report card” to the citizens and businesses of the county. This report card will tell citizens what progress has been made in
reaching the goals and will serve to keep the county accountable. This plan will be assessed continuously to ensure that it remains dynamic and flexible while providing the necessary framework and direction for the future. A high level summary of the plan can be seen in the chart advertised on this page (below). The county will be hosting two facilitated public meetings for anyone to attend to provide feedback on the plan. The public meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, and 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, in the Board Meeting Room (Room 250) of the County Administration Building, located at 1800 Sandy Hook Road in the Courthouse Village. Citizens are urged to attend one of the meetings. Those unable to attend either meeting should contact their Board of Supervisor member to provide feedback on the Strategic Plan. A copy of the full Strategic Plan can be found on the county website (www.co.goochland. va.us).

Sometimes ‘hands-on’ approach is best one By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Last week, on one of those perfect pre-summer evenings you wish you could bottle and save, I had the chance to swing by my father-in-law’s house for a look at his garden. To call it a home garden almost doesn’t seem fair. Rather, it looks like a mini farming operation, with row after perfectly-spaced row of lush, green plants. The gargantuan cabbages alone would feed a family for a week, never mind the dozens of potato plants. There are radishes in there, and kale, and tomatoes that look destined for a photo shoot. How do you learn how to do this? I asked him once, and he simply shrugged. To him, it is not such a big deal — just something he does every year. I’ve never heard this from him, but I suspect that he has learned to create an awe-inspiring garden via the same method people have been using for eons: He learned a little by watching, a little by asking questions, and the rest by simply doing it himself. I can’t help but think about this as I watch our newest crop of high school seniors head out into the world, many of them bound for higher education.

They will learn so much over the next few years, much of it from books, but, hopefully they also will find time to learn a bit from just being out, unsupervised, in the world. So many things, after all, are best learned through experience. I remember, years ago, trying to help a good friend fix an old lawnmower by using a textbook on small engine repair. We had the book, right? How hard could it be? Hours later, covered in grease and surrounded by miscellaneous parts — some of which may not even have belonged to the lawnmower we were working on — we finally threw up our hands. He eventually brought it to a small engine repair man, who diagnosed and fixed the problem in less time than it will take you to finish this column. Lesson learned: Books are great, but they are not the be all end all when it comes to discovery. There is something to be said about getting your hands dirty, for immersing yourself in something and learning it from the inside out, rather than the other way around. Just a bit of wisdom I’ve gleaned, wandering around the garden.

Looking for inspiration? Here’s some By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Take U.S. 460 east to Wakefield and enter the large camp just south of town, and prepare to be amazed, inspired and changed. For one week out of the year, a camp that normally houses rambunctious adolescents who constantly irritate their counselors opens their doors to a special group of kids. It’s no different the second week of June, except for one thing: Every camper during that week has Muscular Dystrophy. And each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association sends these special children to camp for a week — on the house. It’s a week where everything is possible and accessible for kids
who spend a lifetime overcoming obstacles and dealing with unbelievable odds against them. It’s a time when they can be in their world, where no one stares or questions their condition, and no obstacles are too large to overcome. For this brief period, they forget the endless medical visits, the uncomfortable leg braces, the countless number of steps and the daily pain of their disease. But, the main thing they do is laugh, have fun and do the things other kids their age do. There’s plenty of high-speed scooter tag, constant high jinks and a good dose of the normal summer camp activities. It’s my son Jack’s third year at MDA camp. It’s his first year with a scooter.
Each year, I leave the camp amazed at the ability of these gifted kids to laugh in the face of such adversity. Every smile I see reminds me of the effort it took to put it there, and the will it requires to maintain that attitude. There’s another group of people at MDA Camp that I find it almost impossible to amply honor. The volunteers who man the camp, round the clock, for the entire week, are truly inspiring. They are young high school and college students who gladly donate a week of their summers to help kids with MD. They join a dedicated community of dedicated volunteers who provide an important element in this collective labor of love. see Inspiration > 7
Thursday
June 12, 2014
Inspiration continued from >6 And there are almost too many others to recognize. Firefighters from across the area travel to Wakefield and prepare every meal for these campers, and they are treated to food that is not ordinary camp fare. Speaking of firefighters, companies in our area filled the boot for MDA again this year, and made it possible for hundreds to attend camp. Their consistent and persistent dedication to helping MD patients and funding research to find a cure deserves and receives the thanks of every parent who has a child affected. For parents, camp evokes mixed emotions. We all relish the week of fun for our children, but the sad reality is that it marks another year without a cure for MD. And another year when we, collectively, will keep hope alive that good news is on the horizon.

As temperatures climb, those transporting children urged to use caution, stay vigilant Several tips can help parents and caregivers keep kids from being left in hot vehicles Contributed Report
Goochland Social Services would like to remind parents and caretakers to be extra vigilant when transporting children during the hot summer months. Child vehicular heat stroke can happen in a matter of minutes if a child is forgotten in a hot vehicle or if they’ve gotten into a vehicle on their own. These preventable tragedies can devastate the lives of parents, families and communities. June’s issue of Parents magazine highlighted seven ways to make sure you always remember your child is in

That’s when the risk of unintentionally leaving your child in your car increases. 2. Put something of your child’s, like a toy, on the front seat. 3. Leave an item you’ll need at your next destination in the backseat – like your cell phone, purse or briefcase. 4. Club funds weather system, scholarship Contributed Report
Viewers of NBC 12 recently may have seen scenes of weather conditions from a camera mounted on the roof of Goochland’s Byrd Elementary School. The photos are part of a sophisticated WeatherBug system that links Byrd with more than 8,000 school weather stations around the country. The weather data and camera images are used by TV stations and individual citizens. In addition, WeatherBug has enhanced the environmental sciences curriculum at Byrd. Teachers and local government officials have access to detailed weather data using a password. This allows them to discuss weather patterns with students. A second Rotary grant of $5,000 will help create WeatherBug stations at Goochland and Randolph elementary schools, Goochland High School and Goochland Middle School. Those are expected to open in the coming weeks. The money also will help fund a lightning detector at Byrd. Those who wish to view the weather data from Goochland’s schools can do so by downloading the WeatherBug app at http://weather.weatherbug.com/

She finished at the top of her class with a 4.68 grade point average. “Jessica has dedicated hundreds of hours of her time to community service while achieving academic excellence at school. We are so pleased to award her with this scholarship,” Dr. Eric Carlsen, chair of Rotary’s scholarship program, said. Liddle has enrolled at the University of Virginia and will major in Global Development Studies. She said she wants to pursue a career in international community service. Want healthy crops? Soil rotation is key By Karen Hager Contributing Writer
O
ne of the most common pieces of advice I give to other gardeners to help prevent problems with plants is to rotate their crops. Although crop rotation is standard practice for farmers, it is also a basic tenet of home organic gardening. Crop rotation simply means to move a particular type of plant from one spot in your garden to another every year. Whole families of crops should be rotated, not just particular species. Although a rotation of 3 to 5 years is ideal, even a break of one year between plantings will help. Once you know the basics, it’s not hard to accomplish. Why rotate crops? Crop rotation provides three benefits to home gardeners: better soil nutrition, pest control and disease prevention. Rotating your plantings will help to maintain good levels of all nutrients in your soil. Every vegetable or flower that you plant uses a certain recipe of soil nutrients. If you plant the same crop year after year, you will severely deplete the soil’s store of those nutrients. The longer you grow the same type of plant in one location, the more the condition of the soil worsens, resulting in increasing stress on your plants. Crop rotation is also an excellent method of organic pest control. Many pests overwinter in soil as eggs or larvae. When these pests emerge in spring, they immediately look for food nearby. If the food isn’t available, they have to seek it out. The farther a bug needs to travel to find its food, the less likely it is to survive. In addition to pest control, crop rotation can stave off diseases. Some diseases will overwinter in soil, gradually accumulating over a period of time. Common tomato diseases such as fusarium wilt and verticillium wilt are examples of soilborne diseases. These diseases usually can’t survive very long if the plants they thrive on aren’t present as a food source. With no food source, some of the organisms die. With multiple years of rotation and starvation, they eventually disappear completely.
plish. First, create different zones in your garden and avoid planting members of the same family in the same bed for two or more years in a row. Move plants from zone to zone each year. Add more zones to increase the number of years before plants wind up back in their original location. When planning rotation, you will also need to consider tallgrowing plants that may block sun from other plants. Corn, pole beans, tomatoes or anything grown on a trellis should ideally stay on the northern or northeastern side of your garden to avoid shading other plants. A good garden plan might include two rotations: one rotation for sun blockers on the north or northeast side of the garden, and one rotation for low-growing plants that covers the remainder of the garden space. A four-zone tall plant rotation might have areas for indeterminate tomatoes; corn; squash and cucumber; and beans and peas. The low-growing rotation might have one zone consisting of the nightshade family, or potatoes, peppers, eggplant and deterHow to rotate crops minate tomatoes; one zone Once you practice rotation for a year or for members of the cabbage two, you’ll find that it’s very easy to accom- family, such as cabbage, broc-
grams of plantings, it’s not a necessity for crop rotation. Nonetheless, some basic notes and drawings can prove highly beneficial. Draw a basic diagram of your garden, marking the planting zones for this year. Zones need be marked only by family, not by particular plants. Next year, you’ll have a record of where all your plants grew this year, making it very simple to move everything forward by one zone. All gardeners can benefit from implementing crop rotation in their gardens. It’s one of the best ways to maximize your chances of Crop rotation diagrams growing healthy plants. As a beginning gardener, I recall being Contributing writer Karen Hager is based in intimidated by the idea of crop rotation. I Roanoke. believed in the idea, but surely such a practice would require a huge amount of planning, not only for this year but for future years. After a year or two of practicing rotation, however, it became intuitive, and not difficult at all for me to incorporate into my garden planning. Although you can create complex diacoli and Brussels sprouts; one zone for members of the carrot family, like carrots, parsnips and celery; and one zone for everything else. Move each zone forward every year and in four years, your plants will end up at their starting point. As you rotate plants, try to follow heavy feeding plants with light feeders, and follow deep-rooted veggies with shallow-rooted plants. Keeping some basic notes from year to year makes this much easier to accomplish.

Bulldogs exit regionals with road loss Team will return all but two players next season By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
G
oochland’s baseball season ended last week as the Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to home-standing Nandua in an extra inning thriller on the Eastern Shore. The defeat closes the book on a season that had its share of ups and downs for the Bulldogs, but also witnessed a young team come of age as the schedule progressed. “We struggled early in the season with some close losses, then reeled off nine out of 10 games starting in April and taking us to early May,” Farkas said. “We were playing well heading into May, then we struggled a little with consistency and finishing games,” he added. Inconsistent practices due to weather produced a late season slump but the Bulldogs caught fire when it counted. “We started to get hot again when the conference tournament started, but, ultimately, couldn’t quite get key hits and defensive stops when we needed them,” Farkas said. When the team reached the regionals, there was no room for error, according to Farkas. “Everyone you face in Regionals has done something well to get to that point, so

Some key players who will be making those adjustments are first team James River District selectees pitchers Coleman Duty and Joe Cutchins. “Coleman (sophomore) stepped up this season by filling in as our number one starter, accumulating a 6-2 record, with both of his losses being one-run games at Louisa and at Randolph Henry, both of which won their first round games in regionals, respectively, Farkas said. Cutchins, a junior, was solid and second base and effective on the mound. “He is one of the hardest workers on the team, and pushes he teammates to work harder as well,” the coach noted.
