Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services released its annual report last week, offering a by-the-numbers account of the services the organization provided to the community in 2013. Judging by the numbers, GFCFS and its dozens of dedicated volunteers were as busy as ever in 2013, serving more than 1,200 Goochland residents. Among those served, according to the report, 871 were offered health care, while 90 residents received mental health evaluations, medications and counseling. Five hundred fifty-three families were able to take advantage of the organization’s food pantry — including 424 children — receiving 190,609 pounds of food over the course of 6,029 visits. Eleven residents received emergency houssee Report > 2

continued from >1 ing assistance and 111 homes were repaired and made safer through GFCFS’s financial assistance and home repair programs. While the numbers speak for themselves, GFCFS Executive Director Sally Graham insists the organization’s mission is about so much more than that. “It’s the people, and the personal stories that really jump out at you,” Graham said, pointing out that, since GFCFS is not a government organization, the staff and volunteers are able to offer a unique combination of services — and a bit more flexibility — to Goochland County residents in need. Graham has served in her role since 2007, when the Goochland Free Clinic she helped found merged with Goochland Fellowship and Family Services. The latter group had been working to
help Goochland County residents since the 1950s. The idea, Graham said, was to create a “one stop shop” for those who were struggling, making sure that each individual who sought help was provided with all the services they needed, from mental health treatment to food assistance. If a person comes in for medical treatment, Graham said, the staff also will want to make sure their other needs are being met. Among the topics of concern are: Do they have enough food in the house? Is their home safe? These are the issues staff members have been trained to learn during each client’s initial evaluation. “What we want to do is create a culture of caring — not just hand out ‘stuff,’ ” Graham said. Thanks to a small army of dedicated volunteers — and less red tape and bureaucracy
to fight than a government office — “we can leverage our donations very effectively,” Graham said. One dollar, for example, can provide $6 worth of health care. Simply put, “it’s a good investment,” Graham said. As for her future goals, Graham said she’d like to focus on getting all the services GFCFS offers under one roof. (Currently, the Clothes Closet, the food pantry and the clinic are all in separate buildings.) She said she’d also like to make sure the group’s message is reaching as many people in the community as possible. Though they serve many, Graham said, they still know there are others in need who have not yet found their way to GFCF’S door. “That’s really one of our major challenges,” Graham said. “Just getting the word out.”

Habitat an example of best kind of charity By Roslyn Ryan Editor
It was a boat that started the blistering rant — if I remember correctly — but it soon became obvious that the man holding forth about his issues with Habitat for Humanity had much more on his mind. The boat in question was one he had reportedly seen in the driveway of a woman who had recently moved into her new Habitat home. It was proof, he pointed out, that she hadn’t actually needed the help in the first place. Furthermore, he said, simply giving someone a home sent the wrong message. In his view, homeownership was something people earned through hard work and sacrifice, and a privilege not to be taken lightly. As you might guess, there is a twist to this story. As it turned out, the boat that had so upset this man belonged not to the home’s resident but to a visiting family member. And it was quite clear that it was a fundamental — yet, sadly, quite common — misconception about how Habit worked (and not a boat) that fed his fire. At Its very core, Habitat for Humanity represents the single very best thing a community organization can offer: the chance for

a capable, deserving individual or family to help themselves. Those who are chosen to take part in the program must meet income and credit requirements, and demonstrate the means to repay the home loan to the Habitat organization. What’s more, the idea of “giving” a home is not part of the Habitat for Humanity model: everyone who moves into a Habitat home has put in a considerable number of “sweat equity” hours working on their own homes. From the very start, Habitat homeowners are emotionally, financially and physically invested in the creation of their homes. Match that investment with an investment of time from a group of dedicated and passionate community volunteers, and it is simply amazing what can happen. As Goochland’s Habit for Humanity gets started on its newest home, it’s hard not to feel joy for a family that will soon have something many of us take for granted: a home of their own. For helping to strengthen our community and make homeownership a reality for so many deserving Goochland families, we thank Goochland Habitat for Humanity and all of its volunteers. The work you do is truly lifechanging, and its impact will surely be felt for many generations to come.

Letters to the Editor Goochland County voters led the charge in 7th District election Dear Editor, The results of the 7th Congressional District Republican Primary made national and international news headlines on Wednesday, June 11, morning and supporters of both Dave Brat and Eric Cantor are still trying to read the tea leaves. Many have reason to be proud of the results — but none more so than in Goochland County. While district-wide turnout was reported to average almost 12 percent, the voters in Goochland County led the way with 17.2 percent of active voters casting ballots. Manakin turned in an outstanding 21.4 percent and Blair Road blazed the skies with 24.5 percent — more than twice the district average! The operation of our polling places went smoothly, a tribute to the extraordinary goodwill, discipline, integrity and devotion of our
Officers of Election who put in a 16- to 18-hour day to ensure our voting was fair, open, transparent and successful. In 7th District election, ‘boots on the ground’ were the critical difference By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Virginia politics is getting a little like Florida weather. If you don’t like it, stick around . . . it’ll change in a few minutes. Last week’s upset victory by David Brat over incumbent Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor shook the national political ground, and every pundit weighed in on just why and how the upset happened. After each and every one failed to predict the landmark election, they all took a shot at telling us just what happened in Virginia’s 7th District on Tuesday, June 10. Problem was, none of them
had a clue. And as a local reporter, I didn’t either, but, on reflection, the upset seemed far less earth-shattering than I first thought. Signs that I had missed now seemed obvious, and hints along the way that could have revealed the obvious seem clearer. So, as national experts repeated their reasoning over and over, I was skeptical. Did Eric Cantor lose the election because he was soft on immigration? I’m not sure that tells the entire story. For months, a dedicated, devoted and high-energy group of citizens entered a contest they refused to concede and proved that politics is still local.
Earlier this year I received several emails from this very group of citizens updating me on the happenings at the local Republican convention. “They booed Cantor off the stage,” one email read. Now, I had covered previous Cantor campaigns where Democratic hope was eternal and this had to be the year we got rid of the incumbent representative . . . but it never happened. So, what changed this year? Local Republicans achieved what Democrats and thousands of political dollars couldn’t in previous years of trying. see Boots > 7

Ursel Huber. At the Central Absentee Precinct, please thank Chief Barbara Shelton, Assistant Chief Sam Bailey and Bob Swinson. And, at the very hub of the operation, please thank General Registrar Frances Ragland and Deputy Registrar Phyllis Platt, who put in untold extra hours to ensure another successful and efficient election. If Goochland voters stand taller than others, it is only because these are the shoulders we stand on.
Could it be that the American political system worked just as it should, and the citizens of the 7th District decided it was time for a change? The speech at the convention by Cantor was the last straw for many of them, who hit the streets running with energy and passion, something the Cantor campaign had neither of. These citizens did not depend on national money or endorsements and ignored pollsters who had Cantor up by 40 points heading into last week’s primary election. And Brat showed that an accessible candidate can work

amazing magic when paired against an incumbent who hadn’t held a town hall meeting in five years. And Cantor proved that money couldn’t buy an election, despite his best efforts to glorify the opposite. On the morning of the primary, Cantor was in Washington, D.C., having breakfast at Starbucks with a group of lobbyists and cronies. Some media outlets reported that Cantor’s campaign spent more on steak than Brat’s team spent on the entire campaign. But, the real red meat was on his opponent’s side, which took each insult from Cantor with renewed dedication to elect their candidate.

No matter the result, the process was refreshing as citizens ruled the day in a voting process that worked the way the Founders envisioned. In the end, the underdogs got what they wanted, a goal achieved through hard work and putting political boots on the ground. To all of us who thought money and corruption ruled politics — even on a local level — the upset meant more. The voice of the American voter is alive and well, unencumbered by big donations or PACs (political action committees), undeterred by national political trends, and tuned in specifically on their local priorities. At least, that’s true in the fighting 7th District of Virginia.

Dabson, Magnant lead BCP class of 2014 By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it came to assuming a leadership role, Benedictine College Preparatory 2014 valedictorian Kevin Dabson didn’t leave his duties at the classroom door. In addition to course load that included three advanced placement classes, Dabson also served as battalion commander, the highest military rank a student can achive at the school. Dabson, who found out a few weeks before last Friday’s graduation ceremony that his 4.5 grade point average would secure his spot as the valedictorian, said the key to key to his success in school has been his ability to prioritize and to make sure his school work came first. The son of Doug Dabson and Dr.
Dabson
Magnant
Diane Biskobing, Dabson will head to Virginia Tech this fall. He plans to major in construction management, with the goal of earning a degree that will lead to a career in the building industry. “I know I really don’t want an office job,” Dabson said. “This will allow me to have a hands-on career.” For Benedictine salutatorian Rafael Magnant, who, like Dabson, juggled a particularly challenging course load
during his senior year, college plans are not quite as certain. Magnant will head to the University of Virginia this fall, but has not yet decided on a major. At this point, he says, he is leaning toward something related to the biological sciences — perhaps biomedical engineering — but he is also interested in political science. One thing is for sure: Magnant has enjoyed his time at Benedictine and values the lessons he learned during his four years at the school. “It gives you discipline, and it makes you both a better student and a better man,” Magnant said. Mangant, the son of Charles Magnant and Anne King, said he wouldn’t trade his time there for anything. “It’s been the best four years of my life so far.”
From bagpipes to spinning plates, traditions were once again key part of Benedictine cadets’ commencement More photos on pages 9 and 17
