When it comes to showing appreciation for the men and women who have served their country in the United States military, some people go with a bumper sticker or perhaps a patriotic hat. But for Rockville resident Herb Delbridge, honor is something best expressed in a big way — and preferably with four wheels and a siren. Delbridge, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, is the proud owner

of a 1983 Ford diesel fire truck, a vehicle he recently had covered from top to bottom with depictions of those who have fought and died in service to their country. Nicknamed the “Purple Heart Truck,” the vehicle combined Delbridge’s vision and the artistry of Mechanicsville artist Ken Hayden, who spent over four months painstakingly airbrushing the vehicle. Every square inch of the truck’s body tells a story. On one panel near the back, nurses come to the aide of wounded solsee Truck > 3

Looking for projects for children this summer? Look no further than right at home and within the Goochland community. There are numerous ways for children to be involved, starting at home in their own bedrooms. Every time a child cleans their room, a toy no longer played with or clothes that no longer fit (gently used and clean) can be donated to a local charity store like the Clothes Closet. Another trending idea is instead of bringing presents to a child’s birthday party, ask guests can be asked to bring canned food or laundry detergent for a local food pantry. Opportunities to get involved outside the home include collecting recyclable aluminum cans and paper within the neighborhood or organizing a “Peanut Butter & Jelly Food Drive” at vacation bible school. For more information on how you and your child can be more involved within the Goochland community, contact Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services at (804) 5566260 or www.GoochlandFreeC linicAndFamilyServices.org, or visit www.co.goochland.va.us/ CommunityOrganizations.aspx for a list of Goochland community organizations.

diers. On another section, a pair of boots, a gun, and a helmet — otherwise known as a Battlefield Cross — serves as a memorial to a fallen comrade. President George Washington, the creator of the Purple Heart medal, is depicted on several areas of the truck, including one scene in which he appears to be gently handing a medal to a wounded Marine. Each branch of the military is represented somewhere in the display, and each is honored with its own flag, flown from separate corners of the truck in holders painted to resemble bamboo. The idea behind the truck, Delbridge said, is to offer those who have served — particularly those who fought in Vietnam — the thanks they may not have received when they first came home. Delbridge is adamant in his defense of the men who served under him during his time in Vietnam, insisting that they were far from the popu-

truck. He has already taken it to several events — including one on May 17, where the truck made its debut at the Virginia War Memorial — and says it never fails to get a reaction from those who see it. Delbridge said it’s always neat to see people slow down and check out the truck when he drives it down the highway, but it’s the looks on the faces of the veterans who have ridden in it that he likes even more. “It’s just wonderful when you see them up there waving,” Delbridge said. “They really light up.” If you would like more information on Herb Delbridge’s Purple Heart fire truck, visit www.purpleheartfiretruck.com or call (804) 749-3757. lar image of “drug addicts and alcoholics” sometimes depicted in the media. “It was never fair — none of it was fair,” Delbridge said. With his truck, “I want these Vietnam vets to have a few moments of glory. I want to give them the chance to enjoy it, just to have a few minutes of pleasure riding in it.” If the depictions painted on the truck seem eerily real, it may be because Delbridge himself is intimately familiar with each and every one. Having already served for two years in the Army, Delbridge enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1960. While serving near the demilitarized zone in Vietnam in 1967, Delbridge saw horrific violence on a daily basis. He lost fellow Marines and saw others severely wounded. He himself suffered two bullet wounds, for which he received the Purple Heart. These days, the retired postal worker says he has made it his mission to give all veterans their due, and one way he plans to accomplish that is with his

Please use caution when kids are in car By Roslyn Ryan Editor

United States, 14 children have died from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle. Last year, there were at least 44. Just last week, a father in Atlanta allegedly left his son in the car while he was at work after reportedly forgetting the child was with him. Left in a car in which temperatures reached 88 degrees, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. No matter how the courts decide his father’s fate, the worst possible punishment has likely already been meted out. As we continue into the summer months, parents are encouraged to do whatever they need to do to ensure that this never happens to their family. A few tips to keep in mind: • Never leave children alone in or around cars; not even for a minute. • Be extra alert if your routine changes. That’s when the risk of unintentionally leaving your child in your car increases. • Place your child’s car seat in the middle of the backseat rather than behind the driver. It’s easier to see the kid.

Several weeks ago, we printed a story to help remind all Goochland parents and caregivers to guard against accidently leaving children unattended in vehicles, particularly as daily temperatures begin to climb in the late spring and summer months. Since the piece ran, I’ve had several conversations with folks who scratch their heads at the notion that any parent would ever forget a child was in the car — surely a responsible parent, they say, could never actually do that. Sadly, it happens more than most of us would ever guess. As a heartbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning piece that ran in the Washington Post several years ago pointed out, many of the people who kill their own children each year by leaving them in hot vehicles are loving, otherwiseresponsible parents. As experts point out, it is often the demands of our modern, fast-paced world that can be our worst enemy. A mother, juggling a dozen things in her head, forgets she hasn’t yet dropped her child off at school. Finally, if you see a child in A father, running errands on a danger, don’t wait. Call for help. A half-dozen old fashioned batteau boats finished up their journey last Saturday at Maidens Landing. The crews of these vessels, which once ruled Virginia’s waterways, had been taking part in the 29th annual James River Batteau Festival, which started a week earlier on Saturday, June 13 in Lynchburg.

Letter to the Editor Goochland residents must know the facts about permit request Dear Editor, Residents from seven Virginia counties may be receiving toxic sludge, if a permit is issed. Synagro Central is requesting a permit from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to land-apply over 16,000 acres of industrial sludge on forest and farmland, coming from Tyson Food, Smithfield Packing and RockTenn paper plant. Over 300 acres would go to Goochland County. The other counties are King William, King and

Queen, Surry, Hanover, New Kent and Prince George. The sludge contains excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous which will further stress the waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. Of particular concern are heavy metals and carcinogens from RockTenn presently sent to a lined landfill, which is safer than spreading on the land. Synagro has a documented record of violations and fines in other states and in Virginia, the company does not merit our trust. The sludge will migrate during heavy rains, adversely impacting marine life and human health, as the pollutants flow into groundwater and surface waterways. People fear that their drinking water wells would become contaminated.

On June 20, the Synagro permit was pulled from the State Water Control Board’s (SWCB) June 26 agenda, when the permit was to be heard, discussed and voted upon. The DEQ said they will review of public comments and set a new date for the SWCB to consider the proposed permit. The Goochland Board of Supervisors expressed their grave concerns to the SWCB and the DEQ. It is recommended that concerned citizens contact their elected officials to advise them to deny the permit. Even an additional 100-foot buffer will not be sufficient to avoid risks of contamination. Tyla Matteson North Chesterfield

Post 201 brings the pain against Post 206 Powhatan Post wallops Ashland Post, 18-2 By Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local

A

shland Post 206 is in something of a construction zone, and Powhatan Post 201 took advantage of it. Post 201 took advantage of untested or rusty Post 206 pitching, racking up 11 hits en route to an 18-2 victory over the Ashland team in an American Legion baseball contest Saturday at Powhatan High School. Post 206, which returned to District 11 from District 13 last year, draws its players

primarily from Patrick Henry and Louisa high schools and features few seniors and even fewer college players on its roster, while Post 201 draws a number of highly experienced players from James River and Powhatan high schools. “We’re very young, a very young team, but I’m hoping that changes for future years to come,” said Post 206 assistant coach Cody Crawley. “We’re just trying to grow right now.” Post 206 needs to grow in experience, but also in numbers. Its already thin roster was depleted by a couple of vacationing players. Post 201 coach Bryan Hannum said he understands what Post 206 is going through right now. “They were us four years ago,” Hannum said. “I remem-

ber what that was like, to be completely honest. Having 13 guys a game, it was tough. … I definitely understand where

“Our defense is great. It hasn’t missed a beat, which is nice. That’s a good thing to have. But our pitching and our hitting have to get back. Those two, three weeks that we had off need to go away.”

innings before his pitch count caught up with him and he yielded the mound to Joe Buehren, a recently graduated senior from Patrick Henry High School. Buehren pitched the fifth

inning and Troy Forillo got thrown into a meatgrinder in the sixth, giving up nine Post 201 runs on four hits, three errors, three walks and one hit batter. “We wanted to see what [Forillo] had,” Crawley said. “He hadn’t even bullpenned for us. We kind of just rolled him out there.” Hannum said Powhatan is having its share of struggles, too, this early in the regular Legion season. “It’s all about timing for us right now,” Hannum said. “On paper, I think our team has been probably the best it’s ever been since I’ve been here — four years. But everybody’s just kind of off right now with their timing, especially at the plate. … Everybody just needs to get back in the flow

of things. “Our defense is great. It hasn’t missed a beat, which is nice. That’s a good thing to have. But our pitching and our hitting have to get back. Those two, three weeks that we had off need to go away.” Luke Rodgers, Cullen Large and Parker Mead led Post 201 offensively. Rodgers went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, while Large and Mead both went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Harry Lee Watson had a double and a run scored. Dylan Stowell led Post 206 with two hits in two at-bats. Whitlow, Buehren (5), and Forillo (6), Cavanaugh (5). Kurz, Oakey (4) and Majetic. W — Kurz. L — Whitlow. Records: Post 206 0-2, Post 201 1-1.

American Legion Post 201 (Powhatan) tries to catch a Post 206 (Ashland) runner napping at first base. With the lopsided 18-2 victory, the Powhatan Post evened their record at 1-1. “They were us four years ago,” said Post 201 head coach Bryan Hannum of Post 206. “I remember what that was like to be completely honest. Having 13 guys a game, it was tough. I definitely understand where they’re coming from.”

Pinero gets College World Series redemption By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

W

hen the University of Virginia’s baseball team beat Texas Christian University in 15 innings in the wee hours of last Wednesday morning, most reasonable people had retired to the warmth of their bed some three or four innings prior. The game was a marathon, to be sure. When all was said and done, it tied for the longest game, innings-wise, in College World Series history. It ran so long that the organist at TD

Ameritrade Park felt compelled to play a second seventh inning stretch in the bottom of the 14th, presumably to ensure that the fans who had stuck around weren’t dozing off in their seats. Those irrational loyalists who stayed up to watch the 15-inning epic come to its conclusion were handsomely rewarded. Even those folks who weren’t pulling for the ‘Hoos could appreciate the sweet redemption present in Daniel Pinero’s game-winning sacrifice fly. First, some context: Pinero is the Cavaliers’ starting short-

stop, and one of their most reliable defensive players. Prior to the TCU game, he had committed only seven errors all year. He had been a human vacuum, for all intents and purposes. But something went awry in the early innings of the TCU game. Call it nerves, if you’d like. He made two errors on routine ground balls, one of which gave TCU a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. In addition to his fielding mishaps, he also was slumping in the batter’s box. He was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts when he strolled to the plate in the bottom of the 15th,

the score tied and the winning run 90 feet away. Even his eventual gamewinning at-bat wasn’t without its fair share of faux pas. Twice Pinero was asked to lay down a bunt to bring the runner home from third. Both times he failed. With two strikes against him, his chances looked grim. He is, after all, nothing if inexperienced: A freshman known more for his prowess with the mitt than his ability to drive in runs. But with one swing of the bat, he utterly erased all of his previous misfortune. He whacked a deep fly ball to

centerfield that scored pinch runner Thomas Woodruff and caused his teammates to sprint out the dugout like so many wild hounds. Cue the dog pile. Cue an appearance in the CWS Final Four. Errors? What errors? No one seemed to mention them as the orange-and-white mountain in the infield grew larger in the warm Nebraska night. Pinero’s triumph was the baseball fan’s triumph*. Here was a kid who had a bevy of mistakes weighing on his young mind: two strikeouts, two errors, three runners left on base. Yet he was able to

block out all of that negative energy and produce one of the most memorable moments in Virginia baseball history. He could have allowed past failures to define him. Instead he transcended them and became the hero. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to appreciate that. *Unless you’re a TCU fan, in which case Pinero’s triumph was something you’ll be cursing for the next few months.
