When work crews break ground this week on what will soon become the new Salem Baptist Church, it will mark one more step toward the completion of a project that has been in the works since 2006. Of course, it also will bring the congregation one step closer to leaving the Cardwell Road location the church has occupied since 1880. “It’s been a long process,” said Pastor Zack Zbinden, see Church > 2
raditionally, when it came to financing a new business venture, entrepreneurs had three options. They could put up the money themselves, borrow it from friends or family, or attempt to secure a bank loan. These days, however, those looking to start or grow their own businesses are increasingly turning to a new option — microloans — in which donors from around the world contribute small amounts until the funding goal is reached. One such program, Kiva Zip, a microloan program that originated in Kenya and came to the United Dearden see Kiva Zip > 3

Also, July is free barn cat month. Anyone interested in adopting a pet is urged to visit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. June 27 - July 31 ALL Kiva Zip continued from >1 States in 2011 recently helped one Goochland resident make a difference for a local business looking to take its next big step. Lisa Dearden, a well-known local entrepreneur who runs two local weekly farm markets and is the owner of the new Cook N Nook community kitchen, said she was first drawn to Kiva Zip because it offered a way for small business owners to help themselves in a way they promoted responsibility and self-sufficiency. Kiva Zip’s rules are simple: Each person looking to secure a loan must first secure 15 loans of at least $5 each from whomever they choose. They must offer a business plan and a time frame for repaying the loans, which are interest-free. Once the money is paid back, investors can either take back their money or reinvest it into another project.
In addition to collecting the initial donations, each person seeking a loan through Kiva Zip also must have a trustee, a person who will personally vouch for them. “The thing I really like about it is that it’s a loan,” said Dearden, who has served as a trustee for entrepreneurs, including Powhatan resident Sharon Munyak. Munyak, a familiar face in Goochland thanks to the classes she teaches for the Center for Rural Culture, also is the owner of Hobby Hill Farm Fresh, a small business specializing in jams, pretzels and other homemade goods. . When she decided to expand her business to include a mobile food truck unit, Munyak said she saw Kiva Zip as the perfect way to fund the move. “I know I could have put what I needed on a credit card,” Munyak said, “but this is such a great thing. I really wanted to take advantage of it.”
As of last Friday, Munyak’s loan of $5,000 had been fully funded. “Lisa’s done a great job with it,” Munyak said of Dearden’s participation with Kiva Zip. “She really just deserves so much credit.” For Dearden, serving as a trustee has been an enriching experience, allowing her to offer support as well as impart some of the business lessons she herself has learned along the way. “To me, it’s a fascinating idea,” Dearden said of Kiva Zip. “Now I can help take them to the next step, whatever that step might be.”

Art project offers look back at village life By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In these days of instant everything, where waiting seems to have become the exception rather than the rule, we continue to find ways to speed up things. That is why, I’m sure, it has been absolutely maddening (in the best sense of the word) to have to wait for each new installment of Goochland artist Patti Rosner’s “Villages of Goochland” series. A bit of background on Rosner’s project: in 2013, in an effort to help raise funds for two wonderful Goochland organizations, Rosner announced her plan to paint one historic scene from each of Goochland’s five districts. The paintings center on the village lifestyle that has now, sadly, slipped into the past. Since every district had several villages, Rosner is using Facebook to offer Goochlanders a chance to choose which village she will paint from each. After recovering the cost of her materials, Rosner said she plans to donate all proceeds from the sale of prints, mugs and note cards featuring her work to both the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services and the Goochland Historical Society. While Rosner’s efforts are certainly praiseworthy for the funds they will raise, I can’t help but

mention what a wonderful service she is doing — perhaps without even realizing it — for those of us not lucky enough to have been born in Goochland. Seeing each painting and hearing the stories behind them offers an instant connection to the county’s history in a way that few other experiences could. Of course, for those who have called the county home for many years, the paintings offer a chance to reminisce and share stories about “the good old days.” Recently, for example, those attending the unveiling of the District 2, Sandy Hook painting spent an evening sharing stories of getting their horses shod at the blacksmith shop or having the blacksmith pay a visit to their farms. The paintings are a nod to a bygone era, one that obviously still holds fond memories for so many. As we await the unveiling of Rosner’s upcoming works, we’d like to applaud her for finding a way to bring the community together while helping to support those in need. In this case, the art isn’t simply capturing life: It’s helping to make life better. Letter to the Editor Could Goochland’s ‘Devil Monkey’ mystery be solved? Dear Editor, I saw the “devil monkey” at the south end of the paved part of Rock Castle Rd. about four years ago. It crossed the road from east to west about 100 to 125 yards in front of me and appeared to walk in an ape-like manner, but too far away to see in detail. My son and I rode up to where it crossed, but it was long gone and we never got a clear sight of it. But . . .
At 7:55 p.m. on June 25 of this year, coming west on Route 6 just before the 45 mph area east of the courthouse, an animal came out of the woods on the north side to cross over towards the river. I braked hard and it hesitated, turned back around, did a circle, then went back into the woods. It was only 50 to 100 feet in front of me and I got a full view — front, back and profile. It had a long tail, which it kept outright and walked mostly on its hind feet with balance touches occasionally with the front legs. The snout was long and tapered, the coat was
mostly brown like a woodchuck with the tail being darker, and it had a few dull stripes on the trunk. I have seen this species of animal before. It is a South American Coatimundi. I Googled it and there was a picture of one exactly like what I saw. They are related to raccoons, eat the same things, can be dangerous if cornered but not aggressive if left alone. Probably an escaped or released exotic pet. YMMV (Your Monkey May Vary). Donovan Paul Yates Rock Castle
Ten years ago, a very special delivery By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
What were you doing 10 years ago? Most of us probably don’t have a clue … that is, unless you were doing what I was doing almost a decade ago almost to the day. Expecting twins is a joy only a few parents have the opportunity to experience. Getting through the nine months leading up to the births is not as joyous or rewarding. My ex-wife’s pregnancy was not easy, and it took her total commitment and tenacity just to bring our twins to almost full-term births. But, on this hot July day in 2004, she’d had enough. After several calls to her doctor and her continued discomfort throughout the day, evening brought no relief. Her doctor assured her that the discomfort was just that and not a sign that her labor was beginning. So, when bedtime finally arrived, the thought of a few hours relief seemed like a gift from Heaven, for her especially and, on a lesser level, for me too. The final silence of bedtime was broken by what I perceived as a scream coming from the bathroom where a partially opened door poured light into an otherwise dark hallway.
I stood there at that small opening with a sense of fear and anticipation I’d never experienced before. If I could have run, I might have. Once in the tiny room, it didn’t take a genius to assess a painfully obvious situation. We were going to have a baby, right here, right now. That’s when another hero of the eventful night emerged, her efforts only outdone by my ex-wife. A patient and compassionate 911 operator walked me through what seemed like a simple procedure. In actuality, my actions could better be described as that of a catcher, but I won’t astound you with those details. After wrapping my daughter Emma in a towel and placing her on the floor, I backed out of the room to get more towels. Firemen entered my house and their welcomed faces peered around the hall. They immediately noticed the baby and wrapped her in a more appropriate blanket. Their faces were in sharp contrast to mine or let me put it this way: They looked cool as a cucumber and I looked like a man who had just stuck his finger in an electrical socket. “Looks like you’ve done most of the work,” one of them said. “No, she did most of the work,”
I said pointing to my wife. “But, don’t’ relax; there’s another one on the way.” Those words evoked the same facial expression in them as the one I was wearing. Shortly afterward, a crew of EMTs (emergency medical technicians) arrived with the ambulance and took the baby and mother off to the hospital for the second delivery. I gathered up a handful of diapers and my 2-year-old daughter and dashed the short distance to St. Mary’s Hospital. As I entered the emergency room entrance to the hospital, a nurse was waiting to lead me to the area where Chapter 2 was taking place. The tale of the at-home birth had beat me to the hospital. She giggled as she noted the diapers hanging out of every available pocket on my jeans. “You did a great job,” she said. “Who — me?” A hectic night? Well, I guess so, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world. taking up the trumpet and, eventually, the organ. These days, Allen performs almost exclusively in churches and coffee shops, but she has been branching out as of late. In August, she will be performing at Praise in the Park, an annual Christian music festival in Staunton, continuing her mission to share her faith through song. “My goal is to spread the
good news about Jesus,” said Allen, explaining that she hasn’t found anything quite like the charge she gets from performing. “I would almost say I’m addicted to [Christian music],” Allen said. “The message is so powerful and hopeful — I just feel so alive when I sing it.” The band Blue Country will be opening for Allen on July 25, and the group will
take the stage at 7 p.m. Allen is expected to perform until around 9 p.m. A $2 cover charge will be collected at the door. White Hawk Music Café is located at 1940 Sandy Hook Rd. Goochland County summer intern Zorian Thornton is the first high school student to take part in the program.
Virginia Master Naturalists are volunteer educators, citizen scientists and stewards of the environment, helping Virginia conserve and manage natural resources and public lands. The James River Master Naturalist Chapter concentrates these good works in Goochland and Powhatan counties. The 2014 basic training class will meet Tuesdays 6:30 to 9 p.m. from Sept. 9 to Dec. 9. The application deadline is Aug. 1. This informative course includes lessons and field trips led by expert instructors from local colleges and universities, all devoted to a study of our natural environment. This 40-hour class fulfills the basic requirements to become a James River Master Naturalist member. Members may also complete eight hours of continuing education and 40 hours of volunteer service. Many of our projects are at the stately historic Belmead mansion and surrounding property, as well as the Fighting Creek Park and many other locations. Projects may include vernal pool studies of frogs and amphibians, water quality testing, monitoring bird nest-
ing, and developing interpretive nature trails. Projects have also included bird banding work at Powhatan Wildlife Management Area and the continuing development and maintenance of a butterfly plant garden at Tucker Park in Goochland. The JRMN members also study the geology of the region, mammals native to the area, regional weather, wild flowers and invasive plant species. Many of the service projects are led by experienced instructors who are available for training on individual projects. For an application and more information, contact Joanne Anderton, JRMN Membership Coordinator, at (804) 598-7170 or email jamesrivermn@gmail.com. The class fee is $125, although additional fees may apply. Instructions for mailing the application and payment are included with the application. There may be consideration given for those who may wish to enroll after the Aug. 1 date, so call or email Joann using the information listed above. Goochland High student chosen for county internship Monacan Soil and Water seeking Contributed Report
This summer, Goochland County embarked on the third consecutive year of the Summer Internship program. This year the program underwent a slight change from the previous two years, with the internship being tailored for a high school student, rather than a college student. The County created the diversity internship program to offer opportunities for students to gain knowledge about County administration and government by working in a professional environment. This year’s intern is Zorian Thornton, a rising senior at Goochland High School. Thornton will assist in conducting research for the county
administrator and assist other departments of the local government with various activities. In addition, Thornton will gain valuable experience by shadowing departments, which will provide him with the opportunity to see the diverse services Goochland County provides to its citizens. At the culmination of the internship, he will have the opportunity to participate in the August Board of Supervisors meeting. Thornton expressed a great deal of excitement for the summer internship and the opportunities it entails. He is a member of the varsity baseball and basketball teams at Goochland High School, and is interested in studying International Affairs and Political Science after he completes high school.

applications for state cost share Contributed Report
Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District (MSWCD) is soliciting qualifying agricultural operations to apply for the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share (VACS) program to install Best Management Practices (BMPs). Qualifying operations include those which consist of at least five contiguous acres; are engaged in the production of agricultural, horticultural or forest products for market at a gross annual minimum of $1,000; and have a water quality problem. Best Management Practices include, but are not limited to, practices that improve soil and water quality through stabilization of crop, pasture and forest land; livestock exclusion systems; continuous no-till; and fertilizer/manure management. Implementing the above listed and other ag BMPs improve local water quality and make
contributions to the reduction of sediment and nutrients to the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia is required by the Environmental Protection Agency to sharpen its focus on nonpoint source pollution reduction to the Bay through the Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). In other words, the Chesapeake Bay has been put on a pollution diet. The VACS program objectives are special emphases on the reduction of nutrients and sediment delivered to the Bay; preventing additional pollution from entering state waters; and meeting criteria for Virginia’s compliance with the Clean Water Act. These objectives support goals and strategies toward removing the Bay from the national impaired waters list. Monacan is the only entity in Goochland see MSWCD > 9

Certain foods may disrupt (or help) digestive system Contributed Report
Normally, my discussions of food stop once it gets in the mouth - or at the latest once it’s swallowed. But today I’m sharing a discussion I had recently with Jillian Sarno Teta about what happens to food after it’s swallowed. Teta, 34, is a naturopathic doctor who has just co-written “Natural Solutions for Digestive Health” with Jeannette Bessinger, a food writer. Teta said that digestive health is important for many reasons. The digestive system has a larger role in the body than many people think. “About two-thirds of our immune system resides in our gastrointestinal tract (GI),” Teta said. The GI tract acts as a defense against many harmful substances. For example, the high acidity of the stomach works to kill a number of pathogens. The gut is also like a second brain. It has its own nervous system, so digestion can continue without active input from our brains - a feature that’s handy if we are very sick or in a coma. “The gut is very busy,” she said. “It’s connected to every part of the body.” Unfortunately, the modern Western diet leads many people to consume “too many of the wrong foods too often,” resulting in poor
MSWCD
nutrition and poor digestion. Teta named a few of the common culprits behind digestive problems, as well as a few foods worth seeking out to promote good digestion. Foods to consider avoiding include: • Foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten-free foods rose in popularity a few years ago, primarily because of celiac disease, which makes gluten difficult to digest. • Dairy products. “Many adults are lactose intolerant - they don’t make the enzyme to digest lactose,” Teta said. Also, casein, a protein in milk products, can be allergenic and inflammatory. • Soy contains protease inhibitors. These inhibitors turn off protein digestion so proteins are not broken down as needed. That can cause gas, bloating and activation of the immune system. • Tomatoes are highly acidic. The acid in tomatoes can be a problem for people with acid reflux. Also, tomatoes and other members of the nightshade family have compounds that can irritate the lining of the small intestine. Though a lot of people can’t eat tomatoes, tomatoes also are nutritious, so a healthy person shouldn’t necessarily avoid them. Teta said that the following foods help promote good diges-
tive health: • Blueberries have lots of Vitamin C and proline, a precursor to collagen that helps with healthy tissues. • Sweet potatoes, turnips and parsnips all have anti-inflammatory properties and are soothing to the GI lining. They are also rich in soluble and insoluble fibers, which help with hunger, cravings and regularity. • Onions, leeks and garlic have mucilaginous compounds - a slippery quality that is “fantastic for the gut,” Teta said. They are soothing, acting as lubricants. • Stock made with bones from chicken, fish or other meat is good. Bones are rich in vitamins and minerals. Their liquid form makes them easy for the body to absorb. Teta also said that digestion starts in the mouth. The mechanical act of chewing is just the first step of digestion, but it’s an important one. Take time to thoroughly chew your food. One of the best things you can do for digestive health is to get a good night’s sleep, Teta said. That’s an important time when the body is absorbing nutrient. Adequate sleep helps reduce stress, another factor that can affect digestion. “Digestion,” Teta said, “happens best when you are relaxed.” —Michael Hastings

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you may have to be clever to solve a particular problem this week. It will be challenging, but you are up to the task and your efforts will be their own reward. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, spend some time thinking about what you want rather than what others want for you. You may discover significant differences between the two, but do what makes you happy.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it may take some time to get back on your feet after a stumble, but you will get there much faster if you ask a few friends for support. You know the people who have your back. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, very little can disappoint you or affect your mood. Enjoy the responsibility-free week with a free spirit. This is a great time for a vacation. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Think through all of your options before you act, Virgo. While something may seem like a good idea at first, careful thought may reveal some bumps in the road.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Work hard to earn a promotion at work, Libra. While you may need to take on more responsibility and work longer hours, the payoff will be well worth it.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, family activities are getting in the way of business prospects, and vice versa. You may need to make a difficult decision in the near future.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, if you feel you are at a crossroads, take your time to make the best possible decision. This is a significant moment for you, and it requires focus and forethought.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, think through the pros and cons of speaking your mind at work. Your opinions are valid, but you run the risk of alienating certain people, and that should not be taken lightly.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, supporting a family member who deserves it has you riding high this week. This support may be emotional in nature or even financial support if you can manage.
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Approach a problem that’s been puzzling you from a different perspective, Pisces. This new way of looking at things makes all the difference.
THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Be honest with yourself, Aries. Sometimes change can be a good thing, so take a few days to sort through all of your options. You will be glad you did.

Post 175 manhandles Post 201 Mercy rule shortens game after 22 runs By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
T
he outcome wasn’t as difficult to accept the first time Post 175 played Post 201. Post 201 did a commendable job of hanging tight with the talented Post 175 during that first meeting between the two teams, when Powhatan lost 6-4 on June 23, 6-4. But that margin of defeat was respectable, considering the Powhatan Post was playing on the road without several key players. Plus, the players in uniform that night were relatively
inexperienced when it came to Legion ball. The Post 201 squad showed no such fight in its second match-up against Post 175. The visitors from Mechanicsville put up six runs in the top of the first and never took their foot off the pedal, blowing past the Powhatan Post 22-2 in a mercy rule shortened affair. It’s hard to recall the last time the scoreboard at Baltimore Field at Powhatan High School displayed so many crooked numbers for the visiting team. The line looked like 6, 3, 0, 2, 5, 6. It was Murphy’s Law in action for the Powhatan Post, as everything that could go wrong, went wrong . . . and fast. The score was 9-1 after two innings and 16-2 following five. Fatigue, a normal symptom of late-season Legion games, manifested itself in the form of botched routine plays. Post 201 committed five errors in total, opening the door for a Post
175 offense that was consistently making solid contact. All told, the visitors pounded out 17 hits, including two home runs, a solo shot by clean-up hitter Andrew Sargent in the fifth and a three-run blast by Josh Lam that snuck inside the left field foul pole in the sixth. Post 201 head coach Bryan Hannum ran through four pitchers on the evening. He stuck with starter Matt Franklin as long as possible in an effort to preserve a bullpen that has already had much of its energy drained by muggy heat, long games and a condensed schedule. After giving up 11 runs, Franklin gave way to Jeremy Mayo. Mayo allowed five runs in the fifth, then passed the torch to Logan Allen in the sixth, who threw heat but lasted only 2/3 or an inning after yielding four runs. Kevin Granger threw the final inning and a third.

Post 201 first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino readies himself to receive a throw during a game earlier this summer. Post 201 struggled against perennial juggernaut Post 175 last week, losing 22-2 at home. Post 201’s first playoff game will be Thursday, July 17, at Douglas Freeman High School. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Polo a way of life for Manakin-Sabot native By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
T
he sport of polo has been good to Todd Thurston, a Manakin-Sabot native. It’s given the young University of Virginia student a chance to travel nationally and
other players — Nik Feldman from Cornell University and August Scherer from Southern Methodist University — had a chance to take on Biddle in the first game of the tournament. They didn’t play particularly well — a theme that would, unfortunately, repeat itself throughout the weekend
have sulked in his team’s bad fortune, he chose to learn from the experience, like all dedicated athletes do. “There were a lot of things that went wrong,” he said. “But you learn from it. I don’t put it all on the horses, we just needed to adjust faster. It’s just another experience in my jour-
ships in polo with people who are important to you. It makes all the difference.” Thurston’s polo journey has been long and unwavering. Horses have always been a part of his life, and, after talking to him for only a few minutes, one gets a sense they will always be. His speech is measured and specific as he reels off important facts about his equestrian-centric existence. He began riding at the age of 5 with his father. He got into arena polo around the age of 15 and “regular” polo around the age of 16. In April, he went to nationals with the UVa arena polo team, losing in the final by a mere two goals. He joined Team USPA (United States Polo Association), a national all-star team, shortly thereafter, and has been actualizing his dream of making polo a self-
sustaining career ever since. Thurston’s polo journey has taken him to rustic Sheridan, Wyoming, for three consecutive summers to teach 5- and 6-year-olds the ins-and-outs of the traditionally white color sport. Before that, he spent four summers in Northern Virginia, training with Marie Brennan, a renowned polo coach. His love for competition has even taken him to Argentina, where he spent an entire year mingling with other world-class polo players and soaking in the rich culture. “Argentina is the polo captal of the world,” he said with an unmistakable excitement in his voice. “That was the first time I traveled overseas for polo. It was a great life experience. A whole new culture, a whole new world.” He plans to return to
Argentina with the United States Polo Association team to “coach and play” in the very near future, and has even entertained the idea of staying in a permanent capacity. But that will only come after his graduation from the University of Virginia, where he is majoring in Spanish and minoring in media studies. He has one more semester left before departing from the Charlottesville campus. He’s excited to finish his undergraduate career on a high note so he can get on with turning polo into a lucrative and enjoyable career, instead of just an extremely intensive hobby. “I’m just trying to set myself with the right connections,” he said. “I’m doing everything I can to make it so I can be successful when I come out of college.”

He and his teammates were placed at a disadvantage from the get-go, considering they had to rent their horses instead of riding familiar steeds, which is what most of the other teams did. Also adding to the difficulty was the unfamiliarity between the players. In fact, Thurston, Feldman and Scherer had never played with one another before. This perfect storm of foreign horses and not entirely in-sync teammates resulted in a less-than-ideal finish at the U.S. Open. Though Thurston could

Thurston met Zegers while in Northern Virginia, and said it was a borderline unreal experience watching the former student-pupil relationship develop into a peer-peer one. “He’s been a mentor of mine for a long time,” said Thurston. “So it was pretty surreal to finally play against him.
