Project aims to highlight voices from ‘Great War’

A sweet surprise

County group seeking letters, keepsakes to help mark WWI anniversary By Roslyn Ryan Editor

It would become known as the Great War, mankind’s first example of modern, mechanized warfare, and would serve to earn a relatively young United States a place on the world stage. Now, as the country marks the 100th anniversary of World War I, several members of the Goochland Rotary Club are searching for the stories of local residents who experienced the conflict firsthand. Though there are no known surviving veterans of WWI – the last American veteran, Frank Buckles of Drinkwater West Virginia, died in 2011 – Rotarian Ray Drinkwater said he and his fellow searchers know that many letters and mementos have been passed down and preserved by soldiers’ families. Their goal, he said, is to find as many of these as they can, eventually creating an exhibit they will bring to the community. “What we want to do is focus on the human dimensions of the war, and what the individual soldiers experienced,” said Drinkwater, who serves as the vice president for student affairs at John Tyler Community College and also as a professor of history at the school. “We want to give some voice to the not-so-famous persons, those who were impacted emotionally and psychologically by the war.” To fellow Rotarian Wayne Dementi, also a member of the Goochland Historical Society, see WWI > 4

s a dedicated gardener with a naturally green thumb, Centerville resident Sheila Alvis is used to enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of her labor. Her most recent horticultural hit, however, was something quite unexpected. Since she hadn’t planted any watermelon this year, Alvis said she was surprised last spring when she looked over her porch railing and saw the unmistakable green trail of a watermelon vine snaking along the flower beds. Remembering her habit of tossing watermelon seeds over the rail while enjoying her afternoon snack the previous summer, Alvis’ said her best guess was that one of the seeds must have somehow survived the winter and rooted.

Her husband Tommy urged her to pull up the vine, but she refused, pointing out that the worst it could do was offer some extra greenery. Soon, however, it began to seem as though the vine had a mind of its own. “It just kept growing and growing — it was kind of like ‘Jack and the Beanstalk,’ ” Alvis said. As of last week, the runaway vine had reached around 40 feet and grown at least three plump, variegated watermelons. While the plant wasn’t planned, Alvis said the melons are already spoken for. “Oh, Lord, yes,” Alvis laughed. “I’m gonna eat them.” By Roslyn Ryan

Creative couple leaves corporate world behind to found furniture restoration company By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Monica Nickolaou and her husband George, founders and owners of Goochland’s Renew Home Furnishings at 12509 Patterson Ave., know first-hand that things don’t always go as planned. While both once worked for Circuit City, they were forced to chart a new course when the Richmond-based electronics retailer shut down operations in 2009. Their solution was to turn a shared passion for design into what has now become a thriving furniture restoration business. Though they were originally located on Libbie Avenue in Richmond, the couple recently relocated to a 6,000-square-foot space where

they have a combined warehouse and retail operation. “We’ve always had a love for furniture,” said Monica, who earned her degree in fashion from Virginia Commonwealth University. She had actually left Circuit City to work for Southern States before the former shut down operations, but George was one of around 30,000 left unemployed when the company went under. Making use of his degree in interior design, also from VCU, George began crafting furniture as a hobby but soon found an outlet for his efforts at local craft shows. As the business expanded, the couple moved into their first retail space and began taking on more projects. Last year, with their client lost growing, they decided they needed more space. “It was a bigger challenge than we thought it would be,” Monica said of converting the former ambulance facility into a place where they could both work on and display their furniture. The couple had to rip out several offices, see Store > 4

Need a reason to smile? Check your calendar By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If you happened to be looking for a reason to smile today, perhaps you might consider this: As of tomorrow, National Happiness Month will be upon us. To be honest, I had to look up this one when someone mentioned it the other day. While I normally love little-known celebrations of any kind (Sweet Potato Awareness Month, anyone?) I had never heard of it. Fortunately, as it turns out, August really has been set aside as a month to celebrate happiness and all the things that help us — both as individuals and collectively — to experience it. (Just as a side note, August also has been appropriated in the U.S. as National Neurosurgery Outreach Month and National Goat Cheese Month. But I digress). For the record, I think National Happiness Month is great idea. Who, after all, couldn’t use a little more contentment in their lives? Here in Goochland, it’s usually not hard to find something to be happy about. We have a wonderful community, beautiful green spaces where we can enjoy nature, and plenty of opportunities to volunteer — which came in at number seven on a recent list entitled 99 Ways to Be Happier, published by buisnessinsider.com. What’s not to love?

Of course, when it comes to being happy, being willing to work at it is key. “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I my find myself,” said Martha Washington, “for I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not

But if you are fortunate enough to live in Goochland, if you can say you have more friends than enemies, and if you’ve learned to roll with life’s punches, you’ve got plenty to celebrate all year-round.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

www.goochlandgazette.com

What would your one wish be? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

If you had only one wish, what would it be? Unfortunately, most of us will never realize the fantasies that provide our minds with an escape from reality. And, really, if you did have that one wish, how would you ever decide what it would be? The Make a Wish Foundation is in the business of fulfilling dreams for chronically ill patients, providing them with at least one wish that does come true. It doesn’t mean that everyone who takes a trip ends up dying, but the organization makes sure every kid realizes one dream. For some, it’s a trip to Disney World. Others opt for a experience with their favorite sports team or a day with a sports hero. Corporations, sports organizations and others are all too willing to provide the backdrop for many of these experiences. Doctors decide when it’s time for a patient to qualify for a Make a Wish trip, and that recommendation is followed by a visit from a team of experts who interview the

family, and, more importantly, the child in an effort to ascertain what their dream trip will be. The organization, the people who so generously support it, the folks who run it and everything surrounding it are wonderful, positive and supportive to a community that is often overlooked by society. For a parent, the Make a Wish visit is like the visit you never want to receive or the late night phone call that every parent dreads. So, the thought of my son Jack taking a Wish trip was at first a sad reminder that he has a chronic disease that constantly and consistently robs him of experiences we all take for granted. Jack really didn’t have much to say about the whole episode, and the people who interviewed him were caring and compassionate professionals. My son has an almost mystical intuition that allows him not to over-think scenarios regarding his condition or prognosis. In his heart, he looks to adults to make everything alright and believes they will solve the mystery of muscular dystrophy. He lives with that inner

hope and optimism. As an adult, it’s sometimes more difficult to be optimistic when faced with the realities of his and thousands of other Duchenne patients. Make a Wish provides a respite from the constant mental challenge of having a child who is disabled. So, you must be asking what Jack’s dream vacation consists of. He told the team he wanted to go somewhere with a beach, eat good seafood and go to an amusement park. I’m not sure what that adds up to, but we’ll find out soon. Wherever, it will be a great experience for our family, and, most of all, for Jack. And, we all go on this as yet undefined journey with a solid belief that this isn’t Jack’s last wish that will come true. As Jack awaits his answer on where he will be going on his Make a Wish trip, I have a wish of my own. It’s a dream I won’t give up on where children have the chance at life they deserve and a time when smiles and laughter replace wheelchairs and leg braces.

Local rider wins motocross championship Castlebury wins Eastern Open Spring Series By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

When Jeff Castlebury picked up the phone, his youngest child, Jakson, started wailing in the background. After taking a moment to quiet Jakson down and regain his compsure, Jeff spoke into the phone. “That’s my 3-year-old,” he said with a laugh. “He just got his first dirt bike. He’s ready to ride.” Jakson isn’t ready to race competitively just yet, but when the time comes for him to venture into the racing ranks he’ll have a seasoned mentor in the family to show him the ins-and-outs of life on the track. Jakson’s older brother, Jeremy, 15, recently won the Eastern Series: Schoolboy I Spring Season title. It was the first full Eastern

Series season Jeremy has ever completed. In 2013, he competed in “several races here and there,” but nothing substantial enough to qualify for a championship, according to Jeff. In 2014, Jeremy hit his stride. And judging from the results, he seemed to grow more confident as the season progressed into the summer. He finished the Spring Season with nine top five finishes, including one third place finish and one first place finish. Over his final five races, he never placed lower than fifth. There are about 42 riders in Jeremy’s class, though it’s rare to see all 42 compete in the same race, Jeff said. The average is between 12 and 14, though sometimes that numbers gets throttled up to around 20 on a particularly competitive day. The tracks Jeremy frequented have memorable names like Budds Creek, Action Town, Lake Sugar Tree and South Fork. South Fork is home to

Jeremy’s most adrenalinefilled moment from this past season. The track features a 120foot jump known as the Loch Ness. Why it’s named as such is anyone’s guess, but Jeremy made it a point to conquer the leviathan-sized heart-stopper. “Only three people in his class do that jump,” said Jeff. “It scared the crap out of me. I was like ‘I don’t know. Are you sure about that, son?’ But he did it and ended up just fine.” Riding a wave of success, Jeremy isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon. He raced the first event in the Eastern Series: Summer Season on the weekend of July 25 at Budds Creek in Maryland and is gearing up for another full slate of races over the next three months. “It’s something he loves doing and I love watching him do it,” said Jeff. “As long he continues to enjoy it, I’ll support him entirely.” Jakson and Jeremy aren’t the only two members of the household who enjoy

the unbridled thrill of commandeering a high-powered machine. Jeff ’s stepson, Peyton Hurd, is a seasoned motocross racer in his own right. He competes in the 85 CC class, which features riders spanning from age 9 through 13. Though he’s younger than Jeremy, Peyton has been riding for a longer period of time. “It’s a lot of fun, “ said Hurd, “especially since it’s something that Jeremy is good at too.” While Jeremy holds championship bragging rights in the house, Hurd, who rides a deep blue bike with the number “77” displayed on the back panel, has enjoyed a fair amount of success as well. He captured a thirdplace victory at Actiontown in Dillwyn earlier this season, an achievement that was perhaps the greatest of his still-young motocross career. “It was really exciting to fniish third at Dillwyn,” said Hurd. “It made me really

happy.” Jeff said he was excited to see his stepson succeed at something he loves. “He’s been riding for a while now so I was very

proud to see him place so highly,” he said. With Jeremy and Peyton seeing so much success, only time will tell what is in store for young Jakson.

Randolph pursues basketball career By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

Goochland High School graduate Chris Randolph is traveling to Mexico this summer to continue his journey in the world of professional basketball. In August, Randolph will compete in the “Chihuahua League” in Mexico. The league will feature top players from the United States and Mexico and give Randolph an opportunity to prove his skills in front of professional scouts. By the time the league wraps up its season, Randolph hopes to be signed to a professional team.

Randolph graduated from Goochland High School in 2006 and has ardently pursued a career in basketball ever since. He spent seven years in the collegiate ranks, playing for Washington Advent University of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association from 2007-2009 and Southern Virginia of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics from 2010-2012. He ventured into the world of professional ball upon his graduation from SVU, signing with the Georgia Grizzlies of the American Basketball Association in 2012. He made significant contributions during his first season, averaging 8.2 points per

game and 4.1 rebounds per game over 15 games. Randolph is primiarly renowned as a defensive player and he’s described as such by one of the biggest basketball databases in the world, usbasket.com. To wit: “[Randolph] can be looked upon as a team’s lock down defender . . . to shut down the opposition’s best player . . . a coaches dream that will do whatever is asked of him . . . no matter what his role is on the team, he will perform without any problems.” Check out the Aug. 6 edition of the Goochland Gazette to learn more about Randolph’s journey through the professional basketball ranks.

By far, my favorite sports moment was in June of 2012 when we won the state title. It is hard to top a feeling like that.

We had such an amazing team that pulled together for each other and picked each other up no matter the circumstances. It was just great to be unified with a team like that.

If you could score two free tickets to any sporting event in the world, what would it be? Without question, either the College World Series or the [Major League Baseball] World Series. I have always wanted the opportunity to go and still hope to one day.

I always find a way to hunt or fish. They are my favorite activities to do when not playing because they give me time to step back and relax.

Who would you rather go on a dinner date with — Maria Sharapova or Danica Patrick? Well, that is a tough question, because I do currently have a girlfriend . . .

What are your postgraduation plans?

I plan on attending Christopher Newport What are your hobbies University to study business when you’re not and Spanish. While down there playing sports? I will also be playing baseball When not playing sports, for the Captains.
