By now, Goochland resident Regena Stith is used to the somewhat bewildered looks she gets when she tells people about her passion for protecting Virginia’s white deer population. After all, most people have never even seen one of the animals, which are distinguished — as the name suggests — by their white coats. If Stith has her way, however, plenty of people will not only Stith come to know and respect white deer, they will see the need to help protect them as well. “I really think there is a lack of understanding about these animals,” Stith said. “And I don’t think there is anyone to champion this cause.” Occurring by some estimates in as few as one in 30,000 deer, the pale coat of the white deer is the result of a recessive gene, meaning that both a male see White Deer > 3

Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) is implementing a new approach to its Adult Literacy Program, which includes GED classes starting this fall. Much more than learning reading skills, the program also will offer “life skills training.” What does that mean? Beyond reading improvement, GFCFS will provide additional education for criti-

cal skills needed every day. These include basic banking; completing applications; understanding medical instructions; following food recipes and making grocery lists; identifying key words and symbols (poison, danger, police, etc.); comprehending routine paperwork (bills, letters, schedules, etc.); and finding information and resources through various outlets. There will be a maximum if six individuals in each class

in order to maximize focus and learning environment. Reports show that as the education level of adults improves, so does their children’s success in school. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services looks to provide the citizens of Goochland County an opportunity for free educational assistance. GED classes will start the week of Sept. 8. For more information, contact GFCFS at (804) 556-6260.

White Deer continued from >1 and female deer must pass the trait onto their offspring. While the result of this genetic pairing is a thing of beauty to Stith, some don’t quite see it that way: Among the reasons some hunters give for killing white deer is that they are genetic “mutants,” physically incapable of thriving in the natural world. The story of just how Stith became a champion for white deer begins during a drive from her home in Goochland to Charlottesville, when she came upon a white doe standing in the middle of the highway. “It was just one of those experiences,” Stith said. “We just sat there looking at each other. It was one of those

moments that you have with nature where everything is still. It was very special.” From there, Stith said happily, “it just kind of ballooned.” While looking for more information about white deer populations in the U.S., Stith learned that only a handful of states have laws to protect white deer from hunters. Virginia does not. As she continues to work on behalf of the animals, Stith said she has tried to remember to separate the ethical, responsible hunters she meets from those simply looking to bag a rare trophy for their walls. “I have to remind myself not to group all hunters with the predators,” Stith said, noting that many area hunters she’s spoken with say they would never consider shooting a white

deer. She’s also had to accept that the path ahead, in terms of how far and in which direction she will take her project, may not always be clear. She has already ordered a case of bumper stickers to hand out (they read “Protect Virginia White Deer”) and registered a domain name for the website she plans to launch. As for what’s next, however, Stith said that remains to be seen. “My initial goal was to raise awareness of the rarity and beauty of the white deer, and, of course, I would be pleased if Virginia had a law to protect them,” Stith said. “I don’t know if I’m the one to carry that forward, but I do know that I can do my part. And if I can do that, that’s one more step in protecting them.”

Thinking inside the box A few tips for packing delicious (and nutritious!) lunches for kids By Roslyn Ryan Editor

H

ow many parents, faced with the task of packing their children’s lunch day after day, have not wished for a lunchbox fairy who could handle the task for them? A quick swipe of her magic wand and — voila! — a delicious, nutritious, perfectly balanced and totally portable meal would magically appear, just like that. Barring intervention from fairies, many parents will continue to scratch their heads at the prospect of packing the perfect lunch. Fortunately, there are a few tips that can help take the guesswork out of the whole thing. Schools play a role as well. As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow.

Nutrientdense foods also help kids feel fuller longer. * Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

www.goochlandgazette.com

Words of support for the late bloomers By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In the interest of full disclosure, I probably should admit that I didn’t really like school very much growing up. And, of course, for a number of very good reasons, school wasn’t crazy about me either. As someone who tended to lean toward the more creative disciplines — writing, art, drama — I was chronically disorganized and reliably underwhelming when it came to just about every other subject. While I certainly never made any trouble in school, per se, I also never met a homework assignment I could not forget, a book I could not misplace, or a project I could not put off until the very last fraction of an hour before it was due. Once, and I am not making this up, I accidently left my book bag under a tree in the park. By the time I remembered it and came back, something had shredded the bag — and everything in it. From that moment on, I became one of the few students in history to have a dog eat not just my homework but also my textbook, my notebook and my gym clothes. Yes, I was a disaster as a student. But there was still a part of me, every single year at about this time, that would revel in the idea of a fresh start, an opportunity to prove my mettle to every frowning guidance counselor and exasper-

ated algebra teacher. To this day, a cart full of new school supplies still fills me with a sense of hope and optimism. After all, people can change, can’t they? Who’s to say they even the most hapless student, through hard work and personal sacrifice, can’t claw their way to a higher place in the pedagogical pecking order? Unfortunately, I’m sure you can imagine how this story ended, year after year. Despite my best intentions, the plan for academic redemption would eventually begin to unravel, leaving a trail of missing assignments and grossly underutilized study guides. I did eventually “get it,” pulling my act together in time to do reasonably well in the twilight of my high school years. I went on to college and did better there, finally grasping the previously incomprehensible concepts of time management and organization and finally becoming the student I had always wanted to be. And it was a magical time. For all the students who started school in Goochland County this week, brimming with hope at the promise of a new beginning, I wish you all the success in the world. I hope you’ll remember not to define yourself by your past stumbles, and instead focus on reaching the goals you have set for yourself. Good luck, and — no matter what — keep trying!

‘Muscle up’ to support those waging war against Muscular Dystrophy By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Labor Day means a lot of things to a lot of people, but for most of us it’s a well deserved day off. Labor Day is the smell of hamburgers on the grill or the loud splash of a cannonball performed for the final time of the summer. And some still remember a sure sign of Labor Day, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. Many of us dreaded the 24 hours of all station coverage in the days before cable, but none discounted the importance of the efforts. Top celebrities and public icons donated their time to entertain in what almost always seemed like a dated collection of past greats. Even with its corniness, no one doubted the seriousness of the focus of the efforts. I, like so many others, watched

with compassion as Lewis interviewed inspiring victims of Muscular Dystrophy and highlighted their amazing stories. Back then, I didn’t have a clear understanding of just what MD was and how it affected the lives of those it touched. And, Jerry Lewis has never been one of my favorites. After my son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most serious and deadly form of the disease, the telethon became more important and I watched every minute with an intense interest --and sadness. Well, the days of three television stations are gone, and the telethon no longer permeates all available airwaves over the Labor Day weekend. While some have been disappointed with the recent abbreviated versions of the show, I can’t dismiss the effort and its impressive fund-

raising for a worthwhile cause. This year’s event will run on ABC television. The tote board is gone and Jerry Lewis won’t sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” But thousands will watch with a special interest this year, as new drug studies are offering hope to families like mine. It’s the first time in years where realistic hope has replaced constant dismay at the lack of progress. In my heart, I know the cure is close. I’m less certain it will come in time to help kids like my 10-year old son, but I’m hopeful. My mother once told me that — at some point in our lives — we all need the help of strangers. For thousands of MD patients, that time is now and the telethon provides the perfect reminder that your dollars can make a difference — sometimes between life and see Muscle up > 7

continued from >6 death. You will never spend a more important dollar. My son Jack visited fire stations around the area the week of Aug. 11 to thank firefighters for their selfless and untiring efforts to raise money for the MDA and its annual “Fill the Boot” campaign. I saw their interaction with Jack, their true feelings of concern and compassion, and quickly realized they are not strangers to the thousands who know them as hardcore supporters of efforts to treat and cure MD. They are family and we are eternally grateful for these men and women who not only risk their lives to save ours, but also have time to reach out and help people who need it so badly. They take the upcoming MDA Show of Strength seriously and they won’t quit between now and then to make sure they again break all records when it comes to fundraising. In the process, they’ve also earned the respect, admiration and gracious thanks from the many families who benefit from their efforts. Thank you seems to fall woefully short of the appreciation I truly hold for these All Stars. Take a few minutes to tune in to the show on Sunday, Aug. 31, and keep hope alive. And don’t forget to thank a local firefighter. They stand tall in my eyes and in the hearts of the thousands who suffer from this cruel disease.

Cadets look for one more step this season Benedictine gunning for state title after semifinal loss in 2013 By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

A

fter a disappointing loss in the state semifinals to Liberty Christian Academy last year, the Cadets are hoping to take this year’s campaign one additional step. “We had a great off season in the weight room and this is the best conditioned team we have had here,” head coach Greg Lilly said last week. “Additionally, I like the character, the competitiveness, and the desire of this group of Cadets,” he added. With an ample list of returning starters, the Cadets could be in the driver’s seat in the Virginia Independent

Schools Athletic Association Division I. Standing between the Cadets and another shot at the title is a demanding schedule that offers few off weeks. “Schedule is a bear,” Lilly said. “We play three state champions, the Prep League Champs and the VISAA Division I state runner-up. We will be challenged.” The Cadets lost quarterback Bryce Hamilton to graduation, but Lilly has a host of qualified candidates vying for the job. “We have four quality quarterbacks on the roster so we have great depth and the guys are competing well,” Lilly said. Explosive Ramon Jones returns at running back, faster than a year ago. He’s joined by a crew of skilled returnees that should give the offense the punch it needs, including Scott Bracey at wide receiver, a Duke commit. “We are talented at the skill positions on offense and have added some speed in the off season,” Lilly said.

They’ll depend on an offensive line that features five returning starters “who got better in the off-season.” Lilly is looking forward to their experience paying off. “It should be fun to watch them work together this year.” Clemson commit Clelin Ferrell and fellow lineman Ian Williams will anchor the defensive line, and the secondary should be improved. “A year of experience should make this a strength for us. Dean Ngendakuriyo and Carter Butz have a year under their belts at cornerback so we are expecting a big year from both,” Lilly said. The coach said he’s comfortable with this group of athletes and thinks the experience could make the difference. “Seven returning starters on defense and nine return-

ing starters on offense from last year’s playoff team should provide us with great leadership,” Lilly said. “Clelin Ferrell and Mikey McDonald should lead our defense. Jack Cornett, Jack Lasher, Ramon Jones and Scott Bracey should lead our offense,” the coach added. Cameron Cougill returns as the Cadets’ kicker, and Lilly said he is pleased with that aspect of his special team’s play. A brutal schedule, strong traditional rivalries and extensive travel are things Lilly has gotten used to coping with in his past seasons at Benedictine. He also has a good handle on just what it will take for the Cadets to take that extra step to the championship game. “Our guys worked hard in the off-season and worked hard this August. They have to continue to compete with one another so that everybody is ready to perform when they get their chance.” Above, Scott Bracey, a Duke commit, looks to be one of the Cadets most valuable receivers during the 2014 season. “Bracey will be explosive,” said head coach Greg Lilly. Left, Clelin Ferrell, a Clemson commit, is one of seven returning starters on a defense that helped the Cadets advance to the state semifinals last year. Ferrell will look to anchor a strong front four. Photos by Jim Ridolphi

oochland’s Field Day of the Past opened its doors in 1992 when a few area steam and gas engine collectors decided they needed a place to display their antique machines. Wheat and peanut thrashing, meat smoking and even the simplest of chores like washing clothes offer a view back to a period when nothing came easy. Visitors marvel at the efficiency of the sawmill and inhale the sweet vapors that evolve from the making of sorghum molasses. And where else can you see an eclectic collection of old drink machines, traffic lights and hubcaps and everything in between?
