‘Black Money’ scam comes to Goochland By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A Chesterfield man has been charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretenses after allegedly trying to scam a Goochland business. According to Lt. Chuck Henley with the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, Jeramin Cordor, 42, has been accused of attempting to use what has become known as the Black Money Scam. In this kind of swindle, according to Henley, a con artist will typically approach his victim and explain that he has managed to smuggle a large amount of American curCorder rency into the U.S. The catch? Horses, healing, hope New equine therapy program offers area children a chance to build confidence, trust By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Some people, as they say, have a way with horses. Likewise, some horses just seem to have a way with people. When Goochland resident Susan Clark’s daughter Elana had difficulty adjusting to her new life after being adopted from Russia at age 9, it was being around horses — and volunteering at several horse facilities — that eventually

helped ease the transition. Though they had tried traditional therapies, the time spent working with horses “was literally life-changing,” Clark recalled. From this experience would come the idea for Hay Day Ranch, five woodsee Hay Day > 3

money has been coated in a black substance, which gives it the appearance of black construction paper, in order to avoid detection by U.S. Customs agents. The perpetrator of the scam will often have one $20 bill that he has coated in a combination of glue and iodine, a note he will wash off with a special solution as “proof” that the currency is real. He will then tell his mark that he needs money to buy the solution to wash off the

rest of the bills and will share a cut of whatever funds are recovered. The victims of the scam often don’t realize, until it is too late, that the rest of the “money” they have been shown is simply black construction paper and the special solution is either plain water, or, in at least one reported case, raspberry soda. The businessman Cordor approached, who has asked not to be identified, told investigators that the plan Cordor had suggested was similar to the traditional Black Money scam, but did have a few variations.

For example, Cordor is accused of asking his victim to help him turn the sum he already claimed to have into even more money. “This was something that was new to me,” Henely said, though he added that the scheme received national attention in 2011 after an expose ran on ABC News. Cordor was apprehended after a joint surveillance operation conducted by agents from the United States Secret Service and the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 3.

Hay Day continued from >1 ed acres in Goochland that Clark and her husband John, a general contractor, have dedicated to helping children heal through gentle, supervised interaction with horses. “You know, I thought that — if this was something that had been able to help my daughter — it would also be able to help other children as well,” Clark said. Through the program, “children learn to observe, learn to listen and learn to lead,” Clark said. In contrast to traditional therapy models, Clark pointed out, “the horses provide the healing” at Hay Day. Hay Day is home to several rescue horses, animals that have found a new purpose in helping build trust through their interactions with the children who visit the ranch. Hay Day Ranch is not the typical equine therapy program, and Clark, a Gifted Resource teacher for Henrico County Public Schools, will be the first to admit that she is not yet an expert horsewoman. But, while she is still learning that piece of the equation, her experience as a parent and as an educator may offer an even more

valuable perspective. “It would be easy for me to get discouraged sometimes because I’m not an expert, but I have had so many people get behind me and support me,” Clark said. She stressed that Hay Day really isn’t about learning to ride, rather it is about experiencing the joy and comfort horses can offer. Clark’s neighbor Nancy Simpson, a volunteer at Hay Day, said she has been inspired by the impact the program has had on children who have attended. “Last week, one of the ranchers wrote on the side of the horse [in washable paint] that his name plus the horse’s name equaled love,” Simpson said. “That is what Susan is working toward: establishing a trusting and safe relationship between a child and a much larger horse. Susan also teaches them that along with fun comes responsibility, including grooming and cleaning up the horse’s living areas.” While Clark’s approach has drawn plenty of support on its own, another unique aspect of the program is the fact that children who take part in Hay Day’s programs are not asked to pay. After seeing how expensive some of the other equine therapy programs around

the state could be, Clark said she knew she wanted to be able to provide support for those without the resources to find it elsewhere. Now, Clark said, “we’re sponsored by those who buy into our vision.” Laughing, she noted that her husband likes to refer to the family as “horse poor,” but added that the sacrifices are well worth it. “This is really what we want our legacy to be,” Clark said. “It’s a dream that found me.” Hay Day Ranch’s fall term will run from Sept. 9 to Oct. 30. Teachers’ small acts of kindness often unseen By Roslyn Ryan Editor

There are certain seminal moments in every child’s life — call them milestones, if you will — that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Among these moments, perhaps none is more special than the very first day of school. It is a day typically filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, but, as dozens of new students bounded off the buses in front of one county elementary schools last week, it was easy to see that excitement was winning the day. With wide smiles and shiny new backpacks, most of the children seemed eager to see what adventures lay ahead. Of course, new beginnings aren’t always easy. And for one, at least one child on that day, something about this whole new world suddenly didn’t seem very appealing at all. If the sight of a child crying tugs at your heart, this scene might have broken it in two. On the little girl’s face was a mix of fear, sadness and despair — she looked, as she got off the bus, as if her own little world was ending. It is at times like these that the gifts of a talented teacher truly shine: Within a few sec-

onds of the little girl stepping off the school bus, a member of the school’s teaching staff had seen what was happening. Dropping down so she and the girl were at eye level, the teacher immediately went to work, listening first and then offering just the kind of reassurance and comfort the situation seemed to call for. It may never be known just what she said, but it certainly had the desired effect. Shakily at first, but then more confidently, the formerly forlorn kindergartner was able to resume her first day. While touching to those of us who don’t teach, I suspect most people who work in education would not be surprised by a scene like this. Looking back, I’m sure we could all recall instances where a teacher went out of his or her way for us, gently nudging us forward or offering a word of encouragement when it was needed most As the school year gets underway, we’d like to recognize all of those teachers who perform dozens of tiny acts of kindness every day. It may just be holding a hand or wiping away a tear, but it once again serves to highlight just how special these men and women are.

Letter to the Editor When it comes to sludge, no easy answers exist Dear Editor, I read your interesting article concerning problems concerning the plan by the Baltimore-based company Synagro. One fact that I would like to bring out is that sludge, unless it is used with close oversight, can be harmful to one’s health. We only need to back up the clock to June 16, 1998, when the Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted to ban the request made by Bio Gro. Goochland County resident Dana Ragland, who passed away a little over two years ago, presented the board of supervisors a petition with more than 1,000 signatures to ban the application of sludge in Goochland County for another five years. Their current permit was to expire in 1999. Bio Gro was requesting permission to apply sludge to another 400 acres. At both the public meeting and the board of supervisors meeting, Doris Thurston gave testimony

about sludge applied near her home on Jackson Shop Road, which caused her husband to suffer terribly from a lung condition, and she also said the overpowering odor possibly threatened his life. She and Dana Ragland convinced the Goochland County Health Department and Bio Gro to stop the sludge project because of her husband’s health. Now back to the present time. I personally had a bad health problem with some sludge packaged in bags that I thought was fertilizer sold some years ago by Pleasants Hardware when they were closing their store at Short Pump. After spreading this sludge on my lawn, I had severe breathing problems and had to be taken to the hospital where I had to be treated to counter the effects of applying the sludge on my lawn. I felt for awhile that I was going to die. I have not since that time seen any similar material packaged that way and sold in stores. On Feb. 6, 2012, a highly respected farmer in Goochland County sent an

email to the local chamber of commerce members reading: “Hello Chamber Members, we are sad to hear of Dana’s passing. We are family friends but also Dana made a good case when sludge was applied too close to the water supply and his good knowledge made him the perfect person to address this tricky subject because we got to look at how to use this value resource correctly. Dana’s job as head estimator with a civil engineering firm gave him the experience to make the important call. His testimony 10 years ago is still true today and we will miss him very much.” There is no easy answer to satisfy all sides involved in this debate; however, I feel that the health issue should be balanced with the requests by outof-state companies to use Virginia, and particularly Goochland County, as a dumping ground. Restrictions and oversight must be a part of any solutions that work for all. Sincerely, Otho C. Ragland Jr. Richmond

There’s tough, then there’s ‘Kelly tough’ By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I met Pat Kelly when he was playing football at the University of Richmond, and established a friendship that endures to this day. As the years progressed, more Kellys arrived in Richmond, and my friendship became more of a family affair that included Ray and Ed. During most of those early conversations, the subject often turned to the youngest Kelly, Jimmy. They described him as the most gifted athlete in a family that had its share of talented and accomplished sportsmen. Like many fans, I marveled at Jim Kelly’s unmistakable on the field style and his willingness to shoot from the hip as he gained

national attention at the University of Miami. After a college career, Jim headed to Houston and the USFL, a spot that showcased his ability to throw the football in a wide open offense. And then, there were 14 seasons as a starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, with four agonizing Super Bowl appearances that all came up short for the Pennsylvania native. The Kelly brothers maintained a close-knit relationship while Jim wowed the adoring public with year after year all star performances. I was among the millions who appreciated Kelly’s brand of football, a coal mining toughness than ran through every Kelly I ever met. After he retired, I rarely heard of Jim, but I did know he was the

father of a severely disabled child. The irony of a world class athlete coupled with a son who will never walk did not escape me. On a lazy summer Saturday afternoon, I flicked on the TV and the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony was on. Jim Kelly was taking the podium as one of the year’s inductees. He thanked his coaches, his family, including his five brothers, fellow players, fans, officials and the NFL. But, he saved his most poignant of recogntions for his son, who sat nearby with Jim’s wife and two daughters. “Then there is my only son, Hunter. Born on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, my birthday. The son I’ve always see Kelly > 7

But, within four months, my son was diagnosed with a fatal disease called Krabbe leukodystrophy. They told us to take him home, and make him comfortable. And from that day, my wife and I decided to fight this disease. And so, we made it our lifelong commitment to make sure that kids all over the world don’t suffer like my son does. Since the day I was selected, I prayed to God that my son would be here with me today. God has granted me that blessing. It has been writ-

I love you, buddy. I can’t tell you how much those words mean to me and thousands of others who are parents of children with chronic illnesses or severely disabled. Kelly’s few words described what is indescribable. He captured the connection we enjoy, and that one common belief that we wouldn’t trade these special children for anything in the world. As Jim displays his usual toughness in his current battle with cancer, I think about his public persona as a world class quarterback. “Kelly Tough is a slogan that accompanies Jim every-

GHS graduate a success in Mexico Randolph takes basketball skills to Chihuahua League By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

Goochland graduate Chris Randolph can mark another another item off his basketball bucket list. At the beginning of August, the former Bulldog departed for the Chihuahua League in Mexico to play professional basketball in an attempt to impress international scouts. What he found was a sense of fame he had never experienced in the United States.

Fans constantly asked him for autographs and photo opportunities, local publications covered the league extensively, and, when it was all said and done, he had at least three professional teams interested in signing him. Add that trio to the three teams (Morocco, Algeria and Cyprus) that are hot on his trail and it becomes clear that Randolph has options about where his basketball travels will carry him next. He has played in Canada, spent time with two American Basketball Association teams, and, after his most recent trip, conquered Mexico. With signing day on the horizon, Randolph recently talked about his “overwhelmingly

positive” experience South of the Border. So how did your trip go? Everything went well. It was a success. There ended up being 14 of us out of 31 guys, so it was a real honor to have gotten a chance to go. We played a game every night and did a lot of stuff with the media. They wanted autographs and pictures all day, every day. It was different for me because I think I have only signed maybe five [autographs] in my life up until this tour. Now I have signed about 400 and taken about 500 pictures. How strong was the competition?

How intense was the fanfare? It really was a blessing to go out places and people go crazy when they see you and want pictures and autographs. It was like a Team USA type thing, everybody on my team could play, so practices were very competitive daily. We really bonded and had a lot of fun. My coach said all 14 players will get signed to teams, no doubt ,so it’s really cool knowing I will see those guys again.

It was a lot of competition. My whole team has played overseas before and a lot of them were leading scorers in various countries. My coach, Augustin Avila, said three teams have approached him about signing me so I am happy about that. But I also have Morocco, Algeria and Cyprus interested, so I will sign something in the next two weeks.

What was the hardest part about the trip? The biggest thing was having to adjust to my role on the team. I didn’t get a lot of shots, and, since I’m a scorer, that is frustrating, but I just played my role of great defense and rebounded and scored when opportunities came. Coach Avila said that teams told him that’s what they like about me I don’t force anything I just let the game come to me. It’s tough when your whole team is good, especially when you are used to being the main scorer on teams, but I was able to do what the team needed so that we could win games.

Design duo seeks to help demystify world of antiques By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

word of warning: If you happen to be a lover of antiques or even just an admirer of quirky, unique home décor and gift items, it’s probably best not to visit Goochland’s Renmark Design when you are short on time. One step through the door and you’ll immediately see why. Artfully arranged throughout the company’s new home design emporium on Patterson Avenue are antique furnishings ranging from 19th century side chairs to graceful chinoiserie armoires to busts that appear to have been plucked straight from an Italian villa. In one section, a crystal chandelier presides regally over an oval table set with elegant china. In another area, an odd-looking stack of connected wood boxes reveals itself to be an antique Chinese picnic hamper. Mixed in between the larger items are smaller, newer treasures. Intricately detailed, shoebox-sized dioramas beckon from one shelf while locally produced jams, jellies and coffee tempt customers from another. If you are tempted to describe the store as “eclectic,” company co-founder Tayne Renmark will happily agree with you. “What we really love is the mix,” said Tayne, who started Renmark Design with her father Ronnie. The store had been located on Libbie Avenue in Richmond before moving to their new location last January. Describing their particular aesthetic as “high country,” both Tayne and Ronnie

have an affinity for the out-of-ordinary furnishings and accessories that turn a home into a work of art. The showroom is only part of what Renmark Design offers: As professional designers, the duo has hundreds of residential and commercial projects to their credit. But the store allows them to connect with residents and pursue their other passion, helping people to feel comfortable around — and fall in love with —objects that have their own unique back-story. “We don’t want people to be afraid to buy an antique,” Tayne said, noting that they have attempted to stage the store in a way that allows customers to feel at home. “We wanted it to look how it might look in real life,” Tayne said of the furniture groups and tableaus she and Ronnie have arranged. “We want to spark the imagination.” On Sept. 13, Renmark Design will host its first-ever Breakfast in Bed event, showcasing its collection of Anne De Solene luxury bath and bedding products. The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is open to all and refreshments will be available. Though Renmark already counted many Goochlanders among their customers, both Tayne and Ronnie said they are looking forward to meeting even more residents in the weeks ahead. “It’s a wonderful place,” said Ronnie of their newly adopted county. “We’re just truly thrilled to be here.” Renmark Design is located at 12501 Patterson Ave. For more information, contact them at (804) 222-9002.

After graduation from high school, he worked as an equipment installer for Boeing Aircraft until he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the 432nd Division and received the Good Conduct Medal. Rev. Walker earned his B.A. at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and received his master’s in theology from the University of Denver

in Denver, Colorado. He later taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Livingstone College, Benedict College, Allen University and Virginia Union. After 30 years, he retired from teaching and worked at McGuire VA Hospistal for five years until his second retirement. In addition to teaching in the classroom, he dedicated his life to teaching God’s Word. He served as pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, Friendship Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tennessee, Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Chesterfield, and retired from First Baptist Manakin in Manakin-Sabot. He faithfully served as minister to the senior citizens of Quioccasin Baptist Church as was an honorary member of First United Presbyterian

Church. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Bernice Bell Walker; children, Alice Walker-Hall, Jesse E.M. Walker Jr. and Buenos A. Walker; grandchildren, Terryn Hall, Samuel Hall and Julia Davis; a host of family and friends. He was especially dedicated to his buddies, “The Hardee’s Group,” and his devoted friends.
