Local runner logging the miles to help fight cancer Carolyn McKann set to run marathon in Greece in November By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Since she expected to hit the field for softball practice after school let out on March 25, 2013, Katie Anderson made sure to load all of her gear into the back of her mother’s car that morning. Before school, however, the two would make a visit to Katie’s doctor. The 15-yearold student at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School had been feeling lethargic for several days, and that morning had awakened complaining that she felt faint. McKann Katie’s mother, Carolyn McKann, said she thought her daughter might have had mononucleosis, but it took the pediatrician just moments to realize that wasn’t the case. Within just a few short hours, after being told to take her daughter immediately to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, McKann received the devastating news: It was cancer. Katie Anderson was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a particularly aggressive form of the disease. “You never think it’s going to happen see Marathon > 3

Mizpah Christian to host benefit dinner for family battling cancer Church family rallies around lifelong resident By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The church family of Mizpah Christain Church will gather together this Saturday in an effort to support a local family currently facing the fight of their lives. Earlier this year, lifelong Goochland resident Rebecca Bryant Shanks, 35, was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. And while the mother of two and her husband have done their best to stand strong in the face of the devastating news, church members want to do what they can to ease

their burden. In an effort to help offset the family’s medical expenses, Mizpah will be holding a Benefit Music and Dinner on Sept. 20 at Mizpah Christian Church, 5257 Old Columbia Road in Goochland. Local bands will provide music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with food served from 5 to 7 p.m. The meal will include pork loin, apples, green beans and a choice of mashed potatoes or dressing and gravy, and either carrot cake, pound cake, chocolate pie, coconut pie or pecan pie for dessert. Take-out will be available from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10, and a love offering will be taken during the concert.. Pointing out that Shanks and her husband are avid community volunteers — both are

active in the Fife Volunteer Fire Department — benefit organizer Judy Hackler said it only makes sense that the community would rally around them. “If there was any way we could take the cancer away we would,” Hackler said, “but we know this is one way we can help.” Those planning to attend the benefit are urged to purchase tickets in advance if possible. To purchase tickets or for more information about the event, contact Hackler at (804) 339-4075. Those wishing to make a contribution to the Shanks familycan mail checks to Mizpah CC, 5257 Old Columbia Road, Goochland, VA 23063 and write “Shanks Family” in the memo line.

Katie Anderson, right, was always so full of life, remembers her mother, Carolyn McKann. During her treatment for leukemia, “She was the bravest person,” McKann said. “She was just fearless.” Contributed photo

to your family,” McKann said, but she suddenly found herself immersed in a terrifying new world, struggling to understand new terminology, and help Katie chart a course through this next terrifying phase of their lives. “Life just turned upside down,” McKann said. They quickly learned that Katie would need a bone marrow transplant, and she would ultimately endure three rounds of nearly debilitating chemotherapy. Despite the toll it took on her body, McKann said Katie never wavered. Through it all, “she was the bravest person — she just had so much courage and grace,” McKann said with pride.”She was just fearless.” As the two continued to pursue treatment options, McKann, an avid runner, decided she would compete in a marathon to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. And since Katie would come along to cheer her mother on, McKann gave her the option of picking the location of the event. A lover of all things far-flung and exotic, Katie picked Athens, Greece, as their destination. On Nov. 9, Carolyn McKann, who has already raised $5,000 towards her ultimate goal of $10,000 — will travel to Greece to compete in the Athens Classic

she said, is part of that mission. “For as long as I can run, I’m going to keep running,” she said. She also will keep wearing the button on her jacket, the one with the photo of her and a smiling Katie in the hospital during a treatment session. She wears it, she said, in order to help start conversations and raise awareness. Asked how she’s managed to cope, McKann admitted she isn’t quite sure. “For a year, I would just cry,” McKann said, recounting the months of treatment and the terrible physical toll they took on her daughter. Speaking softly, she described one thing in her life that has been a constant since the day her daughter died. “I go into her room every morning and I say ‘I love you,’ ” McKann said. “I know she’s not there, but I hope she hears me … I think she does.” To read more of Katie Anderson’s story, or to make a donation, visit pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/athens14/runningforkatie.

Marathon. But her daughter won’t be there. On March 16, 2014, just under a year after her initial diagnosis, Katie Anderson lost her valiant battle with cancer. This month, in honor of Leukemia Awareness Month, McKann is sharing Katie’s story in the hope that all who hear it will recognize the need to find a cure. “People don’t always know what to say to me about Katie,” McKann said, “but I’d rather they talk about it.” She paused. “People should talk about it.” *** According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a person dies from blood cancer about every 10 minutes in the United States. And, while the likelihood of dying from leukemia has decreased over the past decade, the toll the disease takes on victims and their families can be harrowing. After she lost her daughter, Carolyn McKann was plunged into a sea of grief the depths of which few could likely imagine. Despite the pain, McCann said she knows she has to keep going in order to help make sure that, perhaps someday, no parents will have to go through what she did. The marathon,

This is your newspaper By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“If you want more of a definition [of community journalism], I’m afraid it’s like when someone asked Louie Armstrong for a definition of jazz. The great Satchmo is reputed to have replied something like this: ‘Man, if you have to ask, it won’t do me any good to try to explain.’ You know community journalism when you see it; it is the heartbeat of American journalism, journalism in its natural state.” — Jock Lauterer, journalism professor at the University of North Carolina Since beginning my career in the news business, I’ve been asked more than a few times to define just what, exactly, community journalism is. I wouldn’t say that I’ve developed the perfect definition, but that may be because there really isn’t one. You see, if you are a member of a community, community journalism is what you say it is. And while a community newspaper’s coverage area may be geographically limited, the range of what it considers newsworthy is far less so. The Goochland Gazette has always encouraged our readers to help us tell their stories of their lives. And for nearly six decades, our readers have obliged. Sure we want to be there for the breaking news, and we want to tell

the stories that have a major impact on readers even outside the bounds of our wonderful county. But we also want to feature all the other things that matter to you, from birth announcements to church news to your thoughts on the current issues facing Goochland. There’s more to it, of course, when you’re looking to pinpoint a definition of community journalism. On our side of the equation, community journalism means being in touch with our readership in such an immediate way that readers often feel comfortable sharing the best — and sometimes, sadly, the worst — moments of their lives with us. Community journalism is getting some of your best news tips while pushing your cart through the grocery store and “reader reviews” while waiting on line at the bank. Community journalism is knowing that there is no news item too small, or too insignificant. Essentially, if it’s important to you, it’s important to us. As we continue to do our very best to provide Goochland residents with the best newspaper we possibly can, we encourage all of our readers to continue sharing their news with us. We are so grateful to be able to share all the news happening in this community, and we look forward to doing it for many years to come.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

www.goochlandgazette.com

Letters to the Editor Trammell is best choice for state representative Dear Editor, Virginia is strong because our people are strong. Our state is defined by the hard work and commitment we Virginians have to our families and neighbors and our willingness to sacrifice so that our children can have a chance to forge their own paths. Jack Trammell is running for the House of Representatives in the 7th District to provide Virginians an opportunity for forward-looking leadership and solutions that will help break the gridlock in Washington. A father, college professor and farmer, Jack understands we need real leadership – and real leadership is not about obstructionism – it is about working across the aisle to make certain that the needs of Virginia families, veterans, and

small businesses take priority over politics. He understands that while we have one of the best educational systems in the country, our schools are under stress. More importantly, he understands we are failing as a country to provide our youth with the training and skills they need to compete in the workforce of the future. He understands, too, that many college students are drowning in debt. Jack understands we cannot turn our backs on our aging citizens and will work to strengthen and expand resources to better meet the needs of Virginia’s seniors. People who have worked hard their entire lives to send their kids to school and save for retirement should not be left wondering if they have access to health care or whether their social security is in jeopardy. People feel like the system is rigged against them. The time has

passed for retreating to partisan lines while Virginia families struggle to find jobs that pay well, put food on the table, or send their kids to college. We must ensure workers receive a fair wage-–particularly women, who are the backbone of our families. We need leaders in Washington who are willing to take the tough stands necessary to advance people- not politics. I believe Jack will work across the aisle to develop policies that invest in U.S. manufacturing, strengthen our infrastructure, and promote the growth of small businesses and start-up companies. It is my hope that the citizens of the 7th District will focus on the future of our families and our country and vote for Jack Trammell on Nov. 4. Sincerely, Ron Reynolds, Maidens Chair, Goochland Democratic Committee

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

County Electoral Board will hold forum on state’s new voting laws Contributed report

The Electoral Board of Goochland County is holding a Voter Forum to answer any questions about the changes on the voting laws that will affect this November’s election. This forum will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, in the County Administration Building at 1800 Sandy Hook Road. Goochland has a proud tradition of having the highest voter turnout of any city or county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county saw 85.1 percent of residents turn out to vote in 2008 and 87.44 percent in 2012. In order to do that, officials have pledged to insure that voters have the latest information concerning the changes mandated by the Legislature. This election will feature several changes, including the photo ID requirement. Unlike in the past, a Voter Card issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is not sufficient identification to vote. Any voter that is in doubt as to whether their ID will allow them to vote is invited to bring it to the forum or to the Registrar’s Office and have it checked by an Electoral Board member or the Registrar. If the ID is not sufficient to meet the minimum standards, arrangements can be made to furnish to the voter an ID that is in compliance with the new regulations. Any voter that comes to the polls and has an ID that does not meet the minimum standards set by the new law may vote provisionally on Election Day and meet with the Electoral Board after the election to show additional identification to meet the new requirements.

No one will be turned away from voting without at least casting a provisional ballot. Additionally, any voter who knows their ID does not meet minimum standards can go the Registrar’s Office up to and including Election Day and request a photo ID. To obtain an ID from the Registrar, the voter must attest that they have no other ID, be a registered voter in Goochland County in good standing, provide the Registrar the required personal information, and be photographed and have their signature recorded. There is no charge for this service. Another change that some voters will see is the transition from electronic voting machines to paper ballots. Currently, both precincts in District 5 (501 and 502) and the absentee precinct at the Registrar’s Office use paper ballots. On Nov. 4, precincts 401 (Grace Chinese Baptist Church), 402 (St Matthews Church Fellowship Hall) and 202 (Goochland Recreation Center) will begin using paper ballots. As the process is quite different, voters may experience a longer wait time as voters learn the new system. These voters can see the new equipment at the forum or at the Registrar’s Office after Sept. 19 during regular business hours. This change will eventually include all the vot-

ers of Goochland County. For voters in Precinct 401, the polling place has changed from the firehouse in Centerville to the Chinese Baptist Church at 850 Broad St. Rd. This change was made since the last presidential election in 2012. The important dates for this election are as follows: Sept. 19, 2014 — First day to absentee vote

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC OF AN APPLICATION BY THE VIRGINA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY, FOR APPROVAL AND CERTIFICATION OF ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION FACILITIES FOR THE CUNNINGHAM-ELMONT 500 KV TRANSMISSION LINE REBUILD IN FLUVANNA, GOOCHLAND, HANOVER, HENRICO, AND LOUISA COUNTIES CASE NO. PUE-2014-00047 On July 22, 2014, the Virginia Electric and Power Company (“Dominion Virginia Power” or “Company”) filed with the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”) an application for approval and certification of electric transmission facilities in connection with the proposed rebuild of the Cunningham-Elmont Line #553, pursuant to § 56-46.1 of the Code of Virginia (“Code”) and the Utility Facilities Act, § 56-265.1 et seq. of the Code (“Application”). The Company filed direct testimony and other materials in support of its Application. Specifically, Dominion Virginia Power proposes to (i) replace, entirely within existing rights of way, approximately 51 miles of the Company’s existing 500 kilovolt (“kV”) Cunningham-Elmont Line #553 in Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, and Louisa Counties between the Company’s existing Cunningham Switching Station in Fluvanna County (“Cunningham Station”) and its existing Elmont Substation in Hanover County; and (ii) construct and install associated facilities at the Company’s Cunningham Station and Elmont Substation (together, “Rebuild Project”). Dominion Virginia Power states that the Cunningham-Elmont Line is a critical component of the electric transmission grid that serves Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and beyond. The Company states that the proposed Rebuild Project is necessary to ensure the Company can continue to provide reliable electric service consistent with mandatory North American Electric Reliability Corporation Reliability Standards for transmission facilities and the Company’s transmission planning criteria. In addition, Dominion Virginia Power states that the Cunningham-Elmont Line #553 steel tower structures have experienced inherent corrosion and deterioration requiring extensive repairs, including replacement of tower members. The Company states that the proposed Rebuild Project provides the benefit of replacing aging transmission facilities, and failure to address significant inherent corrosion and deterioration associated with COR-TEN® weathering steel lattice towers could potentially limit the Company’s ability to maintain reliable transmission service to its customers. In its Application, Dominion Virginia Power advises that the in-service date for the proposed Rebuild Project is June 2018, and that the Company will need approximately 12 months for construction of the Rebuild Project as well as 16 months for engineering, material procurement and construction permitting. The estimated cost of the Rebuild Project is approximately $106.1 million, of which approximately $104.6 million would be spent on transmission line construction and approximately $1.5 million would be spent on modifications at the Cunningham and Elmont Substations. Route for the Rebuild Project The proposed route for the Rebuild Project is the approximately 51.0-mile corridor currently occupied by the existing 500 kV transmission line. This route originates at the Company’s existing Cunningham Station in Fluvanna County and heads northeast for 0.7 mile and then turns in an east-southeast direction for approximately 50 miles, crossing the following roads in Fluvanna County: Middle Fork Rd (State Route 680), Bell Farms Ln (SR 693), Sclaters Ford Rd (SR 660), James Madison Hwy (U.S. Route 15), Oak Hill Ln (SR 629), Carysbrook Rd (SR 615), Wilmington Rd (SR 608), Cedar Lane Rd (SR 659), and Shannon Hill Rd (SR 605). In Goochland County the proposed route crosses the following roads: Community House Rd (SR 610), Tabscott Rd (SR 603), Pryor Rd (SR 601), Hadensville-Fife Rd (SR 606), Forest Grove Rd (SR 615), and Broad Street Rd (SR 250). The proposed route crosses the following roads in Louisa County: Three Chopt Rd (SR 700), U.S. Interstate 64, Cross County Rd (U.S. Route 522), Owens Creek Rd (SR 663), Octagon Church Rd (SR 611), and Factory Mill Rd (SR 635). In Hanover County, the proposed route crosses Spring Rd (SR 617), Vontay Rd (SR 611), Pouncey Tract Rd (SR 676), Walnut Hill Dr (SR 622), Howards Mill Rd (SR 673), Stone Horse Creek Rd (SR 670), Ashland Rd (SR 623), Cauthorne Rd (SR 624), Mountain Rd (U.S. Route 33), Winns Church Rd (SR 660), and Greenwood Rd (SR 625). The route then crosses Running Stone Court in Henrico County before crossing Old Washington Highway (SR 626) in Hanover and from there turning north for 0.25 miles before terminating at the Company’s existing Elmont Substation located in Hanover County. All distances and directions are approximate. A sketch map of the proposed route accompanies this notice. A more detailed map of the proposed route may be viewed on the Commission’s website: http://www.scc.virginia.gov/pue/elec/transline.aspx. The Commission may consider a route not significantly different from the route described in this notice without additional notice to the public. The Company’s Application and related documents are available for review in the Commission’s Document Control Center, Office of the Clerk of the Commission, First Floor, Tyler Building, 1300 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, during Commission business hours. Interested persons also may download unofficial copies from the Commission’s website: http://www.scc.virginia.gov/case. Copies of the Application and related documents also may be obtained by submitting a written request to counsel for the Company, Charlotte P. Persons filing a notice of participation shall send a copy of the notice of participation to counsel to the Company at the address set forth above. Bulldogs get road win, begin conference play By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The Goochland Bull-dogs began their championship run in earnest last week as the team traveled to Bluestone for a match-up in their first conference tilt of the season. The homestanding Barons put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell 28-3 to their district rivals. A tougher than expected Baron offense took an early lead with a 30-yard field goal. The 3-0 lead stood up for the most of the first half, until Bulldog quarterback Reid Chenault rambled 11 yards on a quarterback sneak to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 halftime advantage. “We came out very sluggish

on offense,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. “I don’t know if the long bus ride had any effect, but we have an experienced team and we should have handled that better,” he said. “Bluestone did a great job of running the ball and eating up clock and keeping our offense off the field. It seemed like they had the ball the entire first half.” Following the intermission, the game gained a familiar pattern for the Bulldogs, who upped their record to 2-1. “But after halftime, we got into a little bit of a rhythm and were able to shut them down on offense and move the ball the way we wanted to,” Fowler said. The Bulldogs added 20

Both will likely be undefeated when we play them and I know that they have been looking forward to playing us,” Fowler said. But, it’s still business as usual, one game at a time for one of the Commonwealth’s successful coaches. “But, first we need to take care of business against Randolph-Henry.”

Tale of two halves leaves Cougars short By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

When the Benedictine Cadets and Collegiate Cougars get together on the gridiron, it’s not war … but it comes painfully close. Last week’s contest was no different as the Cadets visited Grover Jones stadium for a traditional rivalry game with the Cougars. The game was riddled with injury timeouts and stopped for nearly 30 minutes in the first half to tend to an injured Cougar who eventually exited in an ambulance, later determined to be a cautionary trip to the emergency room. But when all was said and down, Benedictine came away with the 28-7 victory.

Cadet quarterback Scott Bracey fired two first half touchdown passes to lead the Cadets to a 21-0 first half lead that proved too much for the hardcharging Cougars to overcome. A tough Benedictine defense kept Cougars quarterback Will Allocca on the run for most of the game, often scrambling and forced to run as he dropped back to pass. But no one could question the senior quarterback/linebacker’s toughness, as he continually got up after huge hits and never allowed his team to give up. And the knocks went both ways. Bracey exited late in the game, and numerous key players took their turns at the trainer’s table on both sides. While the Cadets got the

better of it in the first half, the Cougars turned the tables in the second half, shut down the Benedictine running game, and

We ask them to give us their best on every play and they do. They played hard in the first half, but we just didn’t finish some things,” he said. “We’ve got to correct the little things.” For Lilly, the victory continues a work in progress, but he saw some things that hold promise for a good season. “We made some big plays in the first half, so I think we showed we are explosive,” Lilly said. “The defense played very well and was running around to the football and getting guys on the ground.”
