Sounding off on sludge Local and state officials voicing concern over the use of industrial waste on farms

lready deeply unpopular with many residents, a plan by the Baltimore-based company Synagro to spread
industrial sludge on farmland in several area communities has been gaining even more detractors in recent weeks. Last month, Goochland became one of four locations — alongside King William, King and Queen and New
Kent — to send letters of opposition to the plan to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the State Water Control Board. Now, as the DEQ reopens see Sludge > 4
Benedictine’s Harmening marks major milestone Closing in on 65 years since taking vows, he says he wouldn’t change a thing By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“I have a general wariness about being told something is ‘just fine’ without being able to evaluate that assertion with verifiable and independent proof.” Robert Minnick, District 4
“The overarching concern is the health, safety and welfare of our citizens. I was pleased to see the State Water Control Board postpone its decision on this issue.” Ken Peterson District 5
“DEQ is mandating very tight regulations on storm water runoff to protect the bay, while forcing us to permit the application of sludge with little knowledge of what the long term impacts are.” Manuel Alvarez District 2
“[We] have no authority to ban the application or storage of sewage sludge or industrial sludge. I am frustrated by not being able to help protect the citizens of Goochland County.
“If biosolids are so good why do they have to travel so far to get rid of them? Seems strange that EPA is requiring water ways to be cleaned up but also forcing us to accept biosolids.”
Susan Lascolette District 1
Ned Creasey District 3
When it comes to institutional memory, very few of those involved with Goochland’s Benedictine High School can rival Father Adrian Harmening. Harmening, who has been a member of the staff at the private Catholic military school since 1955 and currently serves as the Chaplain Emeritus of Goochland’s Benedictine Harmening College Preparatory School, can often seem like a walking repository of Benedictine history and lore. “He is gifted with a fantastic memory, Goochland resident Peg Strecker, who has known Harmening for years, said. Celebration will be held on Sunday in honor of anniversary Contributed report
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Goochland Family YMCA, a nonprofit organization that began with a simple but powerful idea — a strong, supportive community can help people build healthier, happier lives.
Since its founding, the Goochland Family YMCA has grown into one of the community’s largest volunteer-led organizations and become recognized for its commitment to helping people of every background reach their potential. “This is an amazing milestone in our Y’s history,” Jay Shively, executive director of the Goochland Family YMCA, said. “Our Y has grown so much over the past 10 years in terms of membership, programs and outreach. But what
has always remained consistent is our commitment to our members and the Goochland community. And I believe even greater things are ahead for our Y in the next 10 years.” To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the Goochland Y is having a family friendly celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28. All members of the community are invited to partake in food, music and fun for all ages. For more information, contact the Goochland Family YMCA at (804) 556-9887.

Auxiliary members support veterans Contribued report
American Legion Auxiliary members from Post 215 have been busy with support activities for the veterans at the Hunter Homes McGuire VA Medical Center. Auxiliary members Janice Nelson and Nancy Gregory visited the Dialysis Unit where they dropped off 50 tote bags filled with blankets and toiletry items for the patients. They said they would like to thank local dentist Dr. Peter Murchie for the donation of 144 toothbrushes and toothpaste that was arranged
through Goochland Dentistry and Colgate. Auxiliary members also gave the dialysis unit a laptop, donated by John McHugh of Contractor’s Institute. The laptop will be used to provide educational information to patients during treatments. The Polytrauma unit received an outdoor grill that will play arole in the rehabilitation of the veterans in this unit, starting with them assembling it as part of their rehab. When Auxiliary members learned that these veterans
often have no bags for their clothes or personal items, they purchased 22 duffle bags for the veterans in the unit. These are some of the veteran support activities in which the Auxiliary is involved. Future projects include stuffing a Christmas stocking for a veteran at the Medical Center. If you or your company is interested in donating to the American Legion Auxiliary contact Nancy Gregory at (804) 556-6433 or contact the Post through the website: http://www.goochlandlegionpost215.com.

and Surry — a chance to voice their concerns. A public hearing also will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the DEQ office, 4949-A Cox Road in Glen Allen. Citizens Against Sludge cofounder Tyla Matteson said she was very pleased to see the response the issue has received from both local and state officials. After holding a special public forum, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors decided on Aug. 27 to withdraw the county’s application to receive the sludge. Del. Chris Peace, RHanover, citing his own research as well as interviews with local farmers, sent a letter to the DEQ requesting a delay of the permit process until the proper pre- and post-application tests and regulations have been developed.
“We must guarantee the citizens of my district and the Commonwealth that land application of industrial sludge is safe and monitored for ongoing environmental impact,” Peace wrote. Industrial sludge is what’s left over from some industries’ waste after the material has been treated through a process that includes the use of bacteria to break down pollutants. While sludge can contain heavy metals, which are linked to health problems, including cancer, brain damage and nervous system disorders, state rules limit the levels of metals in the sludge. The sludge Synagro has asked to use would come from three industrial operations: the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in western Hanover County just north of the Henrico County line, the RockTenn Co. paper mill at
West Point and the Smithfield Foods pork processing plant in Isle of Wight County. In light of residents’ concerns — and the many questions they say still remain on the safety of using sludge near residential development — each of the five board members supported at least some degree of caution being exercised by the DEQ. To Goochland County Board of Supervisors chairman Manuel Alvarez, the current testing procedures simply are not adequate. “Through our legislative agenda we are requesting that the General Assembly allow more local regulation,” Alvarez said. “If we really believe there is no negative impact, then we should not be afraid of performing more testing.” The Richmond TimesDispatch’s Rex Springston contributed to this report.

Building important but stories must not be lost By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Several weeks ago, Goochland County held a public meeting to discuss the future of Central High School, the building that served as Goochland’s black high school during the era of segregation. As might be expected, the conversation was not easy, nor was the solution to the issue that would be reached that night. More than a few people spoke out about what they saw as a lack of value placed on AfricanAmerican landmarks in the county. And, despite the best efforts of the county administrator to respond to that charge, the frustration many in the audience felt was palpable. It would take a particularly hardened heart to have been able to sit in that room and not understand the dissatisfaction. Who among us, after all, even if on a much smaller scale, has never felt ignored or looked over? And what is more upsetting to an individual or group than to feel as though their personal history is being ignored, erased or obscured, particularly a history in which they have overcome untold obstacles and triumphed in the face of hatred and prejudice? No, it was not hard to see why those who attended Central High School would be emotionally

invested in saving it. And while we here at the Goochland Gazette don’t have a solution for the future of Central High School, what we can do is help preserve the memories of those who attended it. Starting this week, we are inviting those who attended Central High School to share their recollections with us for an upcoming series of articles. We are interested in all the stories, big and small, and all the memories that the school holds for so many of our readers. What to do with the building is a matter that residents and county leaders will sort out. But what good will it do anyone if the building remains and the stories fade away? As it soon became clear during that meeting several weeks ago, Central High School meant so much to so many -- not because of the mortar in the walls or the tile on the floor but because it shaped the lives they would go on to lead. Let’s put as much focus into preserving the memories of those who attended Central High School as we do on preserving the building. Those who would like to share their recollections of attending Central High School should contact me at (804) 339-7956 or by email at rryan@goochlandgazette. com.

Racing against the clock By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

tanding in the middle of the Goochland High School varsity football squad, a guy can feel mighty small. There’s a variety of towering linemen, speedy backs and muscle-bound competitors who put it all on the line each Friday for their beloved team. To a man, they are gifted athletes who have learned the value of hard work, commitment and doing the right thing. They truly reflect the values of a coaching staff that knows there’s more to football than first downs. And, there’s one member of that vaunted roster who appreciates them more than most of them will ever know. For the past four years, Goochland High School has joined with hundreds of colleges and high schools across the nation to raise awareness and money for Duchenne, a deadly form of Muscular Dystrophy that affects thousands of children worldwide. During that period, my son Jack Ridolphi has served as honorary captain for a special event that takes place each year called Coach to Cure. It’s a week when Duchenne takes center stage in Goochland, and players take time from their busy practice to reach out and touch someone who knows all too well the cruel realities of this murderous disease. Jack visits practice, takes care of the game ball, and flips the coin to start the game. More importantly, he learns that Joe Fowler’s young troops have a clear understanding of his plight, and they display a level of compassion and care that few would expect from scholastic high school players.
Workshop will focus on career exploration Contributed report
They form lasting relationships with Jack, and the thought of a little boy who will never display the athletic prowess most of them possess, touches them on a personal level. They take a moment to consider the horror of not being able to move your legs or arms and the challenges of a progressive debilitating disease. And each year, the trip from the sideline to the center of the field is a little harder for Jack to complete. It’s a reminder to me that another year has passed without a cure for MD. That gloom is somewhat replaced with a sense of hope this year, as several breakthroughs seem closer than ever. For children like Jack, it’s a race against time, and no one knows if help will come in time for the youngest Bulldog. But, I know about 200 players and former players who believe and hope it will — and that means everything to kids like Jack. Coach to Cure is a vital event sponsored by the American Coaches Association and Parents Project for Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) that raises funds and national awareness for Duchenne. Patients visit team practices, visit the sideline, and partner with players to supply the impetus that will one day end the nightmare.
The funds are crucial as research enters a critical stage. The awareness is just as important for many who have no idea what Duchenne is. For a parent who feels Jack’s pain and fear, it’s a reaffirmation that the kindness and compassion of friends is always present and a community of caring people can make a difference in a life, especially the one of a certain 10-yearold hero of mine. When Goochland takes the field this week, Jack will be with the Bulldogs, and coaches will wear special patches denoting their Coach to Cure commitment. He’ll wear the number one that Coach Fowler reserves for him each year with pride and honor. And he’ll leave the field with a new sense of hope, provided by a group of coaches and kids who reaffirm my belief in future generations. Thanks again to the GHS family, the Goochland community and Coach Joe Fowler for caring. Join us Friday evening at Goochland High School for this year’s Coach to Cure. The game begins at 7 p.m. If you can’t attend, make a difference by texting CURE to 90999 and donate $5 to Coach to Cure. Help us win this deadly race against time for thousands of children.
A workshop on careers, internships and volunteer opportunities for teens within Virginia State Parks will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 25) at the Goochland Branch Library. Krista Weatherford, a Powhatan State Park interpreter, will talk about opportunities in conservation and recreation, marketing and public relations and the outdoors and nature. This workshop is for ages 12 and up. For more information, call (804) 5564774 or visit the library at 3075 River Road West.

Bulldogs rock Randolph-Henry Chenault tosses 3 TDs in win
It was perhaps the Bulldogs’ best performance of the year. “We played really well at times on both sides of the ball,” Fowler said. Checking on former Goochland players A look at college level skills By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
Jess McLaughlin (football/Goochland/RandolphMacon) Jess McLaughlin enters his junior season at RandolphMacon this fall. Listed as a linebacker, McLaughin has played in all three games, tallying three tackles and one 22-yard kick return. McLaughlin is part of a Yellow Jackets team that seems to be hitting its stride as it heads into the fourth week of the season. After a 42-3 loss at Johns Hopkins to start the season, RandolphMacon responded with a 48-16 win over Averett and a 34-20 victory of Sewanee. McLaughlin and crew’s next game will be at Emory & Henry on Oct 4. During his senior season at Goochland (2011), McLaughlin played a vital role (particularly on defense) for a Bulldogs team that finished as state runners-up to Gretna. For his contributions, he was named first team allstate Defensive Player of the Year. Charley Meyer (football/ Benedictine/Virginia Tech) Charley Meyer has been one of the hardest working athletes on the Virginia Tech football team since joining the roster in 2012. During his freshman season, he was honored with the Frank O. Moseley Award as “one of the
offensive players that showed the most hustle during the off-season and spring workouts.” His willingness to better himself has earned the 6’1”, 210-pound redshirt sophomore a consistent spot on special teams and occasional playing time at receiver. The highlight of his redshirt freshman season is a toss-up between his reception against Georgia Tech and the Iron Hokie honor he earned for work in the weight room. This season, Meyer has seen action in all four games. At Benedictine, Meyer had 784 yards receiving and seven touchdowns during his senior season. As a result, he was selected first team allstate and second team allmetro. Peyton Smith – (field hockey/St. Catherine’s/ William & Mary) Peyton Smith, a 2012 graduate of St. Catherine’s school and a junior at William & Mary, is having her best season to date for the varsity field hockey team. This season is the first in which she’s seen significant playing time. She has appeared in all eight games and is currently tied for the team lead with two goals. Those two scores came in back-to-back contests: the first against in-state rival Richmond on Aug. 31, the second five days later at home against Central Michigan in what turned out to be the Tribes’ first (and only so far) win of the season. During her time at St. Catherine’s, Smith played a crucial role on a team that won consecutive state titles in 2010 and 2011. She was an all-state selection her senior year and participat-
ed in the National Futures Tournament twice. Emma MacLeod (field hockey/St. Catherine’s/ William & Mary) Emma MacLeod joined Smith, her former teammate at St. Catherine’s, in Williamsburg this past fall. She’s had an instant impact with the Tribe, starting at midfield in five of their eight games. Though she’s not commonly known as an offensive threat, she’s proven she can be effective on the attack when the situation calls for it. She notched her first goal of the season against Louisville on Sept. 14. MacLeod was a muchheralded recruit coming out of St. Catherine’s. She accrued a litany of accolades, including inclusion on two all-state and two all-Metro teams, a state tournament MVP award and a team scoring title her senior season. She also is an accomplished lacrosse player, and plans to join the varsity team at William & Mary. Other Goochland-area athletes currently competing at the college level include: Wilton Speight (football/Collegiate/Michigan), Nigel Williams (football/ Benedictine/Virginia Tech), Cornell Urquhart (football/ Benedictine/James Madison), Raymon Minor (football/ Benedictine/Virginia Tech), and Mason Engel (football/Goochland/Randolph Macon). (Editor’s note: If you know of any other athletes from Goochland-area schools competing in college, contact sports writer Mike Schoeffel at mschoeffel@powhatantoday. com, 804-598-4305 or 804921-6823.)
