According to Virginia Tech professor Greg Evanylo, the timing of the webinars’ release is particularly appropriate. “The new comprehensive biosolids regulations managed by the Department of Environmental Quality are now being implemented,” Evanylo said, “and there are many people within our local governments who could benefit by having basic information on biosolids, its regulations, and how it is used on farms and forests in Virginia.” The topics and schedule for the webinars are as follows:
Virginia Tech’s Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences will be offering three webinars on biosolids in the coming months. The webinars, which are designed to offer basic information on biosolids for local officials, also will be available to any residents interested in viewing them. The county will be showing the Session 1: Basic information webinars in the conference room of 1:30 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18.

Goochland Christmas Mother calling for community support Organizers: ‘adoptions’ key to meeting county need Contributed report
It is not yet Thanksgiving but Goochland’s Christmas Mother volunteers are already hard at work to meet the needs of those in the community who are otherwise unable to have a meaningful Christmas. The association is asking for support for “adoptions” for this year’s Christmas season. Adoptions have become a vital part of the association’s ability to help those in need. “Our adoptions chair, JoAnn Dabney, is working hard to make sure that every eligible family that needs support receives it,” Cindie Valentine, Goochland Christmas Mother
president, said. “It is the generous support from the community that enables us to help so many more than we could otherwise.” County organizations, businesses, churches, schools and families are needed to adopt and provide for eligible recipients. These groups give food and gifts to their adopted families in the name of the Christmas Mother, using guidelines provided. “It is a wonderful opportunity to get into the spirit of giving and bring real joy to someone in need,” Adoptions Committee chair JoAnn Dabney said. “We need many adopting groups in order to bring Christmas to the number of families we expect to serve this year.” Goochland’s Christmas Mother (GCM) program provides food, clothing and other
special gifts and support to meet the needs of each qualified family. The work of hundreds of volunteers is required to organize the donated and purchased food and supplies, shop for and wrap gifts, and deliver the items to each family. A county resident is asked to serve as the Goochland Christmas Mother during the season, and 2014’s Christmas Mother is Meta Potts. Potts is working hard to raise contributions for the program. Individuals or organizations interested in adopting a family in need should contact the GCM Adoptions Committee at (804) 556-3411. Volunteers also are needed to shop on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and wrap gifts on Saturday, Dec. 6. For more information about adoptions or volunteer opportunities, visit the website at goochlandchristmasmother.org.

Goochland High School Theater teacher Neil Burch, left, gives stage directions to his “Alice in Wonderland” cast, inclduing Hope Spoonhower, center, who plays the title role.
Alice continued from >1 thing that was like a children’s theater show, and we’d really like to give elementary school age children an idea of what it means to be an actor.” In a special nod to the younger theater-goers, the first show will feature a meet-andgreet with the cast, and children are encouraged to dress in costumes of their own. The show, which will debut at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Goochland High School, will be a slightly different take on the classic Lewis Carroll story than the Disney version many are used to, but Burch said he thinks it will be a hit with audiences. Anchoring the production are senior Hope Spoonhower as Alice, sophomore Tevin Davis as The Cheshire Cat and senior Kendal Michels as the Queen of Hearts. For Spoonhower, the chance to play the title role is
something of a dream come true. The former volleyball player, who decided this year to focus the majority of her time on theater, has been the understudy for the lead for three years. “It’s no nerve-wracking but also so exciting,” Spoonhower said gleefully, moments after trying on her costume for the first time. Though she admitted it’s been challenging at times to play a role Burch envisions in his version of the show as a young girl of around 7, Spoonhower has adapted well. Remembering trips to Disneyland as a child, where she was thrilled to meet the costumed actresses posing as princesses, Spoonhower said she is hoping the production inspires some of the young students who come to see it. “I’m hoping to find a ‘minime’,” Spoonhower laughed, just before taking the stage to continue rehearsals.
Also hoping to make an impression is Davis, whom some may remember from his hilarious turn in last year’s production of “Murder in the Wings.” Playing the strange and mischievous Cheshire Cat, Davis said he had little trouble feeling out the character and making it his own. “He’s creepy in his own way, but he’s really trying to help Alice,” Davis said. “He’s kind of a relaxed, free-flowing character.” For Queen of Hearts Kendal Michels, who, like Spoonhower is in her first lead role, performing in front of large audisee Play > 4

ences is nothing new. This will be her seventh production at GHS, though perhaps it isher most challenging. The hardest part of playing Carroll’s iconic royal is “just being angry all the time,” said Michaels.
For his part, Burch said he has had a blast directing the show, though staging a production of this size — the cast of 45 is one of the largest he has ever worked with at GHS — does offer its own challenges. The most important thing to him, Burch said, is that the kids coming to see the production enjoy it. “We really want the young Goochland Bulldogs to have a good time,” he said.

Company 1 crew rescues pup from pipe At around 11 a.m. on Oct. 23, volunteers from Manakin’s Company 1 fires station received a call from a citizen saying that her dog was trapped in a drainage pipe on her property. When Rescue 1 arrived on the scene, crews found a dog approximately stuck approximately 20 feet into a 16-inch culvert pipe. Due to a buildup of dirt, mud, and rocks, crews were met with challenges trying to access the pup to pull her to safety. After approximately 30 minutes of hard work, the volunteers were able to remove the dog from the pipe and return her to her family with no injuries. Contributed photo

American Legion Post 215, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Goochland High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will present a ceremony honoring veterans at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Goochland High School auditorium. This follows the tradition started in 1947 when the first Veterans Day was observed, paying tribute to all those who serve and have served in the
military. On this special day, the citizens and government of the United States of America render honor, respect and love to those who have sacrificed so much for Americans’ freedoms and the freedoms of so many people throughout the world, the members of America’s Armed Forces, past, present and future. The guest speaker this year will be Col. Catherine Hundley, who is retired from the United States National Guard. She
holds the unique distinction of being the first female to be promoted to the rank of colonel in the history of the Virginia Army National Guard. In 1997, she also became the first female from the Virginia Army National Guard to graduate from the U.S. Army War College. The ceremony is open to the public and all are invited to come and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country.

When it comes to voting, excuses hard to swallow By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Though we hear it again and again as every Election Day draws near, the importance of making your vote count can never truly be overstated. Having known more than one person in my life who didn’t place heading to the polls among his or her top priorities, I have always marveled at the fact that they were willing to expend far more energy on deciding what movie to see on a given Friday night —reading reviews, consulting websites, etc. -- than they were on helping to decide who would be the next person to lead their state (or even national!) government. Truth be told, it’s pretty easy for many people to come up with an excuse to forgo the polling booth: I’m too busy. I can’t get away from the office. I don’t know enough about the candidates. My vote doesn’t really matter anyway. What’s interesting is to imagine these same excuses if we could somehow go back in time and witness the brutal, bloody struggle so many

engaged in just to secure the right to cast that ballot. Would we tell a soldier fighting for our freedom in World War II that we were “just too busy” to get to the polling station? Would we tell the brave men and women who fought tirelessly to end discriminatory voting policies in the 1950s and ’60s that “the weather was bad” so we decided to stay in on Election Day? Would we tell any of the millions of people around the world living in countries where fair and democratic elections simply do not exist that we didn’t think voting “really mattered”? Somehow, I doubt any of us would consider doing any one of these. Fortunately, Goochland County residents do have an excellent track record when it comes to voting, often boasting one of the highest turnouts in the state. For all of those who embrace the hard-earned right to make your voices heard, keep up the good work and keep setting the right example. For those who don’t, please make this a year of change. It’s your right. It’s your duty. Get out there and vote!

Letters to the Editor CUP case could set dangerous precedent for county development Dear Editor, My wife and I bought a home in western Goochland County 22 years ago, in appreciation of the rural character of this beautiful area. Two months ago, a Henrico-based developer filed an application for a Conditional Use Permit, requesting two commercial wood processing facilities on his A-1 zoned property in our rural residential neighborhood, also zoned A-1. If approved by the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, these two industrial plants will run six days a week, 10 hours a day. This is not a private sawmill for lumbering on-site timber, rather an ongoing commercial enterprise, with lumber trucked in from external sources, processed, and then sold to the market. For the past two years, this developer has been operating his enterprise without the proper zoning. After neighbors complained to the
county about the incessant noise, and the large industrial logging trucks tearing up our small rural roads, and impacting our bridges — the county asked him to cease operations until he had the legal zoning rights. The developer’s response was to request a Conditional Use Permit — providing him an exception to the A-1 zoning. He now wants to double the number of commercial sites and increase the operational hours by a total of 500 percent. This should concern everyone in our county. If approved, this establishes a precedent for high-intensity commercial activity in our neighborhoods. For the 50-plus property owners within a two-mile radius of these industrial sites, the noise will dramatically impact the tranquility of the rural setting where they intentionally chose to live and greatly reduce property values. Who would want to purchase a home in a rural setting with two commercial enterprises running 10 hours a day, six days a week with a consistent, inces-
sant noise factor that far exceeds an occasional chainsaw, or the use of a portable sawmill for timber from one’s own property? While this Henrico developer owns other commercially zoned and available sites in Goochland specific to industrial activity, it appears that our A-1 zoned neighborhoods are more “convenient” to him. Please join us on Dec. 4 at the Planning Commission meeting to oppose this developer’s application, and suggest that he might consider using his other appropriately zoned commercial sites for his high-impact industrial activity. While it might be inconvenient to him, it’s a dangerous precedent for the rest of us who own homes here, jeopardizing our property investments and, most importantly, disrupting Goochland County’s greatest asset, the tranquil rural fabric of our community. Respectfully yours, Cecil Hooker Columbia see Letters > page 7

Virginians should demand right to protect themselves To the Editor, One of the things I appreciate most about Virginia is our excellent record of freedom. According to a ranking of all states by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, Virginia is the eighth most free state in the U.S. But what concerns me is what I hear from candidates like Jack Trammell and Mark Warner. They seem to speak in vague statements like, “I believe in common sense solutions to gun violence” or “I think there are places where guns should and shouldn’t be.” When pressed further, they revert to a non-answer such as, “I’m a gun owner.” Which tells us little or nothing. In spite of giving these opaque answers, these two men seem to share a common liberal belief that an ordinary citizen shouldn’t have the ability to defend himself. That a woman walking through a dark parking garage after a long day of work should use no force greater than a cell phone to defend herself from
an attacker. That an elderly couple living quietly out in the country should be able to fight against a home invasion using only hope — hope that a trooper arrives in time. I believe that Virginia should become more free, not less free. I believe that citizens should have the freedom to defend themselves against attackers. I look forward to voting for people like Dave Brat and Ed Gillespie who understand Virginia and our love of the most fundamental freedom of all — the freedom to protect oneself and one’s family. Sincerely, SJ Ovaska Goochland
Trammell is right choice for district To the Editor, On Nov. 4, the citizens of the 7th Congressional District will have a chance to truly change our elected congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Dave Brat has proven to be a “Cantor clone” by espousing the same reactionary ideals as his predecessor. His past history as a corporate lobbyist makes his interests suspect and he certainly lives an
elitist lifestyle. He has avoided most direct forums with his opponents, which comes across as being arrogant and dismissive, and this should give a voter pause. The clear choice for this election is Jack Trammell. Jack is down-to-earth, intelligent, and cares about the best interests of all citizens — not just corporations and wealthy donors. He lives on a farm and has raised seven children, one of whom is a wounded military veteran, in a blended family. He has truly lived and experienced a similar life to most residents of Goochland County and understands our needs and concerns. He will preserve the benefits that hard-working people have earned — the right to a comfortable retirement and affordable health care — and, as an educator, he understands the economic benefits of making higher education an attainable goal for everyone and not just the ones who can afford it. I want to strongly urge all of my fellow Goochland residents to go to the polls and vote for Jack Trammell and, for the first time in a long time, be represented by someone just like the rest of us. A bit about being human By Ron Spessard Contributing Writer
I know. Yes, I do, because I have heard it from our current generation a thousand times over and more: We love our laptops and smart phones and iPads — can’t live without them. Just look around, anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Technology will come with us into the future, an invaluable tool and necessary resource. But, while observing our relentless demand for immediacy, I cannot help but ask: Are we taking technology into the future, or it is taking us, willing or not, along with it? Voting rights, the plain and simple truth
Brown Motor Parts, Inc.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
October 30, 2014
While recently interviewing a candidate in this year’s upcoming election, I quizzed him on the repeal of portions of the Voting Rights Act. More specifically, I asked if he would support reinstituting a new version of the act. “I think everyone who has the right to vote should be able to,” he replied. His handler quickly chimed in with a notable explanation, stating
GOOCHLAND SELF-STORAGE
that — while his candidate did support the right to vote — he would not commit to specific policies regarding the Voting Rights Act. Truth is, voting rights have taken a back seat to other issues during this year’s campaign, even though many consider the right to vote under attack in numerous states. In Virginia, voters will be required to show photo identification to participate in this year’s election. It’s the state’s first election under the new guidelines, which some have termed restrictive and prohibitive. Truth is, there is confusion among some citizens regarding
what credentials are necessary to cast a ballot in this year’s contests, and that’s a clear indication that any restriction to voting can have a huge impact at the polls. Like the aforementioned candidate, I believe every citizen should have a right to participate in our elections. All of us are stakeholders, investors if you will, in this process called democracy, a system that only works when voters are unencumbered and clearly instructed on how to cast a ballot. Any attempt to restrict that process represents a serious threat to our system. If one citizen is confused, or one person does not have the proper
ID and does not vote, it’s an affront to our citizenry as a whole. Like anything worthwhile, the right to vote may eventually lie in your determination to have your voice heard. It’s our responsibility to make sure we have the proper IDs, no matter how burdensome some of those requirements appear on the surface. Elections shouldn’t be decided by the few or the loudest or the most politically involved. There’s ample room for their input during the campaign. Clearly, the majority should and must decide. I would suggest a re-examination of any policy that
restricts, prohibits or discourages full participation in our political process. In that same vein, I would urge every citizen to show up at the polls, correctly credentialed and prepared to perform one of the most important things you’ll do next week. Vote! And remember, in order to cast your ballot you’ll need an accepted form of ID: a driver’s license or other photo ID issued by Virginia, a U.S. passport, a photo ID issued by the federal government, a student ID that has a photograph and was issued by a school in the Commonwealth, or an employee ID card with a photograph.

For more than 11 years, Southern States Cooperative has partnered with John Deere Financial to provide competitive financing programs for Southern States customers. In 2013, the two companies established a scholarship fund available to rising college sophomores pursuing an associate’s degree focused on agriculture. Applications for the 2015 academic year will be
accepted from Nov. 3, 2014, through Feb. 13, 2015. Up to five scholarships in the amount of $2,000 are awarded annually to students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong individual character and significant personal involvement in agriculture. Following the completion of the academic year, scholarship recipients also will receive a paid summer internship at a Southern States Retail

The “selfie” could not begin to express what it would be like to enjoy the last slow dance together, the sights and sounds and the night air. No, but later, both boys would text each other and their friends all about it. Sadly, the cell phone cannot see or hear, only reproduce. It cannot touch or smell or speak with emotion. They had never met, but the texting stopped and the cell phones were put away into purses and jacket pockets. For the rest of the evening, the couples began to enjoy speaking with and to each other, laughing, growing and learning during those carefree, sometimes reckless and awkward, necessary years. Now, they were discovering the most advanced tool in all of human technology, one that can never be duplicated, but only felt: the heart.

Bulldogs bounce back with 42-8 Homecoming win By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

ollowing last week’s loss at Nottoway, Goochland coach Joe Fowler put his team through a week of tough practice in preparation for their ensuing opponent, Cumberland. Apparently, the tough love approach worked and the Bulldogs came out and played a familiar brand of hard-nosed

football in front of a packed Homecoming crowd at the Dog Pound. The renewed aggressiveness resulted in a 42-8 victory over the hapless Dukes. “Our goal was to come out and be as aggressive as possible in everything we did. We wanted to get back to playing physical football and taking the game to our opponents,” Fowler said. “We didn’t feel like we played that way over at Nottoway and it cost us. We were a lot more physical in
practice and that carried over to the game.” With starting quarterback Reid Chenault still nursing a sore knee, but expecting to return to the lineup next week, Jordan Jefferson didn’t miss a beat in his second start under center. “Jordan did a great job of running the offense, both on the ground and through the air,” said Fowler. “He threw the ball really well and looked really comfortable. When he got the chance to run it, he does what he has always done, which is be explosive.” Jefferson turned in a threetouchdown performance, his second of the season, and was aided by a solid ground attack anchored by running back Marcus Burton. “Marcus took advantage of the chance to carry the ball and made the most of the opportunity. He is just a sophomore, but he is extremely coachable and is only going to get better over the next two years because he works so hard,” said Fowler. The Bulldogs made it look easy the first half. After Calvin Martin converted a key fourth down from midfield, the Bulldogs scored on their first possession when Jefferson found Jayrell Myles for a 32yard scoring strike. Issiah Minor scored from 10 yards out later in the opening period to put the Bulldogs up 14-0. Calvin Martin continued the offensive onslaught with a 51-yard touchdown run as the second quarter opened.

Cadets prepare for playoffs with LCA matchup By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
T
he Benedictine Cadets solidified their grip on first place in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association by defeating Fork Union 48-7 last week. That sets up a regular season finale with Liberty Christian, the reigning VISAA champion that captured a last second win over the Cadets in a semifinal game last year. It’s a matter of unfin-
ished business for the Cadets. Last year, they defeated LCA in the regular season to gain a playoff spot, but lost a heartbreaker one game short of the finals. The team is looking for a different outcome this season, and, if the Cadets’ performance against Fork Union is any indication, the outcome might be better. The Cadets dominated a tough Fork Union team from start to finish as Scott Bracey had a field day against the Blue Devils. Bracey turned in an
unstoppable performance with more than 170 yards on the ground and another 160 through the air. A stout Cadet defense recorded two key interceptions in the one sided contest. Cadet running back Ramon Jones recorded four touchdowns in the one sided victory. Entering this week’s home contest with LCA the Cadets are 7-2 and ranked number one in the VISAA. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bobby Ross Stadium.
