Just in time for the holidays, a Goochland family has a brand new home of their own. Goochland Habitat for Humanity celebrated the dedication of its 20th home on Oct. 19, handing over the keys to the Scott-Prosser family. To begin the ceremony, George Price, president of Goochland Habitat for Humanity, introduced the invocation by Rev. Rosemary Price. Knight Bowles then shared some thoughts on the history of the Goochland chapter’s founding, with instrumental accompaniment provided by Bert Henley. Bowles pointed out that the ScottProsser family had not only put in the requisite number of “sweat equity” hours required to obtain their see Habitat > page 2

embers of a Goochland group are hoping the community will continue to rally around them as they work to secure life-saving treatments for a decorated military veteran. The Pray4Clay Warriors will be holding several benefit events in the coming weeks to help raise funds for Del Clay, a county resident currently engaged in the battle of his life. Clay, a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while serving two tours in Iraq, was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2013 and eventually learned that he has a particularly rare form of the disease. The diagnosis is not Clay’s first brush with serious illness. While on his final deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2011, Clay

suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury as a result. After a lengthy stay in a military hospital, Clay was declared medically retired. According to those working on behalf of Clay and his family, doctors have said that the only treatment that could extend Clay’s life is a medical trial currently underway in Houston, Texas. “All we can do now is to keep pushing forward,” said Melissa Clay, Del’s wife of nearly 30 years. “It’s been heart wrenching but we have turned over every rock...we’re just never going to give up.” The Pray 4 Clay Warriors organization is attempting to raise $15,000, money that will help pay for the first of six treatments Clay will require. The group has already raised around $1,800 thanks to a benefit concert held at see Clay > 2

Goochland resident Del Clay, shown with his grandchildren Caleb and Annabelle, is hoping to travel to Texas in December to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer.

American Legion Post 215, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Goochland High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will present a ceremony honoring veterans at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2014 in the Goochland High School auditorium. This follows the tradition started in 1947 when the first Veterans Day was observed, paying tribute to all those who serve and have served in the military. The guest speaker this year will be Col. Catherine Hundley, who is retired from the United States National Guard. Col. Hundley holds the unique distinction of being the first female to be promoted to the rank of Colonel in the history of the Virginia Army National Guard. In 1997, she also became the first female from the Virginia Army National Guard to graduate from the U.S. Army War College. The ceremony is open to the public and all are invited. Jones earns Eagle Scout rank Franklin Jones IV chose to take on was a prayer garden — because just getting the task t might be fitting that accomplished nearly required a the Eagle Scout proj- measure of divine intervention. ect Rosewell “It was stressful, Jones, 17, admitted, but he continued to forge ahead. He had decided to construct the prayer garden, to be located at Gum Spring United Methodist Church, after talking with then-pastor Jeffery Hall. Since the church was in the process of building a new sanctuary at that point, Jones thought the project would be a way to help with the transition. “I decided it would be good to do this for the church so they wouldn’t have to worry about it, Jones said. Getting the prayer garden built required a lengthy approval process, and meant getting the blessing of both the Boy Scouts and the church. “It took years, Jones said.

Jones also had to balance the planning and approval process with his school work at Goochland High School and his extracurricular activities, including participating in the Future Farmers of America and the Future Business Leaders of America. Still, he persevered through the planning process, and finally the construction day arrived. Jones said he could not have gotten the installation completed without the help of the 30 volunteers — including fellow members of Troop 710 — who came out to help. Fours after they started, the group beheld the culmination of all that effort: a perfectly divine prayer garden, complete with a stainless steel cross, a pathway, and a landscaped area ringed with boxwoods and azaleas. The project was a hit with church members, but also impressed scout leadership as well. On Sept. 28, Jones was awarded his Eagle Scout rank, the highest level a Scout can achieve.

On development issue, who are we afraid of? By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When I was around 10 years old, I succeeded after a year of begging in convincing my parents to let me take on a small afternoon paper route in our hometown. It was only a few square blocks, but, boy, was I proud of myself. Even on the coldest days, I would haul out my shiny newspaper cart and load it up, looking — or so I liked to think — very much like a grown-up career woman going about her business day. It was on one of those cold, blustery winter days that I happened to pull my cart past an elegantly-dressed woman on her way into a bank (in my memory she is swathed in fur and dripping in diamonds, but that memory may have become a bit embellished over the years). After taking stock of a child who apparently looked, to her, like an early 19th century street urchin, she fumbled in her handbag and pulled out a few dollar bills. “Here,” she said crisply, thrusting the bills at me just before she swept through the doors of the bank. “Take this.” Before I could even say thank you, she was gone. I suppose, in retrospect,

that it was meant to be a kind gesture. But even at that young age I felt the sting of being judged a charity case. More than that, the way she looked at me — and the fact that she had been careful to keep herself an arm’s length away — left a feeling that is still hard to describe even so many years later. Sadly, I can’t help but feel the old, familiar pull of that memory whenever I come across debates like the one currently playing out in District 4. During the recent District 4 Town Hall meeting, a number of Centerville’s Parke at SaddleCreek subdivision residents reportedly expressed serious reservations about the kind of businesses that could possibly be located nearby. Furthermore, there was some handwringing about the kinds of people that such businesses would attract. There is a part of me that desperately would like to ask during one of these debates — respectfully, of course — just what sort of businesses and people we are worried about. To be sure, I am not begrudging anyone the right to live in a nice, safe, quiet, neighborhood, free from the see Zoning > 7

Letters to the Editor Residents should be concerned about sludge permit application Dear Editor, We have just recently become aware of an alarming issue that will impact Goochland, Hanover, New Kent, Surry, King & Queen, Prince George, and King William counties. Here is the bottom line: The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is in the final process of deciding on a permit (VPA00584) to approve SYNAGRO Central, LLC to spread sludge in Goochland, and 6 other surrounding counties, which would include applying this industrial sludge to more than 16,000 acres

(covering 322 fields) of land allowing a 10 year span for dumping this waste. Part of this 10 year permit is for land located here in Goochland. The industrial sludge will come from three plants in the area: Tyson’s Foods in Glen Allen, Smithfield Foods in Smithfield, and the Rock Tenn paper mill in West Point, and will be applied at 1-2 dry tons per acre of land. As for wet tons, Smithfield would be 15-30 tons per acre, Rock Tenn would at 15-30 tons per acre, and Tyson at 6-15 tons per acre. DEQ reports some of the chemical composition of this industrial sludge includes copper, lead, aluminum, mercury, arsenic and other carcinogens. While DEQ and other

advocates of the product state there is overwhelming evidence showing decades of usage of sludge with no negative effects to the environment, wildlife, or health of those around it, others against the usage of this sludge say it’s toxic, causes health problems, and is detrimental to the environment. If the extremely offensive odor and the swarm of flies that it attracts isn’t enough to concern you, then the heavy metal content of the industrial sludge and the potential threat of contamination to shallow wells and waterways should outrage people. Several of us from Goochland and other counties attended a standing room only public meeting with the see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from >6 DEQ and Water Control Board at Innsbrook on Thursday, Oct. 23 in opposition to the Synagro permit to dump industrial sludge. The citizen testimonies and outcries in opposition to this permit were very factual and alarming. Several personal testimonies included cases of health issues and even death after being exposed to industrial sludge. Second to the health issues, the main concerns included the potential threat of contamination to shallow wells and waterways and lack of testing and monitoring by the DEQ. In addition to the concerns with the industrial sludge adversely affecting the public and the environment, there are major concerns with Synagro. There have been several cases alleging neglect, mishandling of products, and violations by Synagro in the past. Most recent violations include, a lawsuit was filed against the company alleging that the company was illegally dumping chemicals, violating antipollution laws, and illegally ran waste disposal at the plant located in Houston, Texas. In addition, in 2012, residents noticed the product in tributaries going into the rivers in Essex, Fauquier and Goochland. DEQ officials found this to be a violation and the State Water Control Board fined Synagro $65,000. The company paid a $16,250 fine and agreed to a two-year environmental study on this problem.

Zoning continued from >6 fear that they might one day wake up to find that someone has opened a greasy spoon type restaurant or a car wash 15 feet from their driveway.

Synagro filed for bankruptcy in April of last year, after defaulting on debt. The company was sold to privateequity firm EQT Infrastructure II LP in August of last year. Please do your own homework. There are numerous web sites: Just type in Synagro or Slugevictims.com. The Goochland County Board of Supervisors submitted a Letter of Request to the DEQ stating they would like to have a better understanding of the components of this industrial sludge as well as assurance of better testing and monitoring. They have requested industrial sludge not be land applied until further research, similar to the JLARC biosolids studies conducted in 2005 and 2008 be conducted, and industry-specific regulatory standards be developed and implemented, and ongoing testing and monitoring protocols be established. The deadline for submitting public comments is fast approaching, which is Nov. 7, and the State Water Control Board will make their final ruling on this permit on Dec. 11, 2014. If this issue concerns you, and we hope it does, please submit your comments to the following and include your name and address (Refer to Permit #VPA00584 for Synagro Central, LLC):

But common sense would seem to dictate that development outside the bounds of a residential area, while certainly subject to current zoning ordinances, can’t (and won’t) always conform to the tastes of the people living nearby.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Fortunately, there are places people can choose to locate their homes where they are virtually guaranteed to avoid the indignities of living near a strip mall or a having to pass by the unwashed masses queuing up for a burger at a fast food joint:

Goochland, The Goochland Gold Spot, Goochland Pharmacy, Dreamshine Tack & Celebrations at Bandit’s Ridge. Parks, Recreation & Facilities would like to specifically thank the County Agencies, our Community Partners, and those who supported the Fall Festival: Goochland County Board of Supervisors, the Recreation Advisory Commission, Goochland County Fire & Rescue, Sheriff’s Department, Health Department, Sheryl Holcomb and all who organized and supported the Cole Starke Memorial Home Run Derby, Pamunkey Regional Library Goochland Branch, Animal Control, Department of Forestry, Goochland County Schools, Goochland Rotary, Company 4 & 6 Ladies Auxiliary, GES PTA, Goochland Historical Society, Va. Cooperative Extension 4-H Animal Science Club, Trailblazers and Thunderhooves, Thistle Down Alpaca’s, Goochland Family YMCA, Goochland Gazette, Jeanie & Lester Bryant and Creative Awards & More. For more information on upcoming programs, Department sponsored special events, and the Winter Spring 2015 Program Guide, please visit the Department website at www.co.goochland.va.us or find us on Facebook to share your Festival pictures! Thank you for your continued support! The Goochland County Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department

They are called private islands. Sadly, Goochland doesn’t have any. So those who choose to live here may be forced to live with the uncomfortable reality that neighborhoods — like so many other things in life — sometimes change.

Francis McGee McGEE, Francis E. Jr., MD, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and neighbor passed away October 27, 2014. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Frank grew up in Falls Church, b e com i n g McGee an Eagle Scout, earning his Amateur Radio license (W4ZNU), and working in the peach orchards near his home where he found an enduring love of country life. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and matriculated to the Medical College of Virginia. He received his postgraduate training in Neurology at MCV under Dr. Cary Suter. In 1971 after his training, he joined Neurological Associates in Richmond, a practice begun by Drs. Laurie Rennie and A.B. Harrelson. Frank had a productive professional life, authoring numerous articles and giving presentations at both local and national levels. From the mid-90s until his retirement in 2010, he and his wife, Jan, were focused on Phase II and Phase III clinical trials for FDA approval of medication to help those suffering from conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, migraine, and seizures. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and loved teaching medical students as an MCV adjunct professor of clinical neurology. He served as the president of the Virginia Neurological Society and was also chairman of the American Heart Association’s Virginia Council Stroke Task Force. Applying the same gusto and joy he had for the practice of medicine to his personal life, he purchased a small western Henrico County farm in the early 1970s that had seen its better days and moved his suburban family out to the country shortly thereafter. Restoring the farm and learning how to work it led Frank and his family on a series of adventures that, decades later, are still a source of deep laughter. Moving to the country also permitted Frank to pursue his passion for fox hunting and he developed many deep and enduring friendships over the years with his fellow riders. At Deep Run Hunt Club, he was a Joint Master of Fox and Hounds from 1992 to 2001 and was the club’s president between 1990 and 1992. He was the only son of Francis E. McGee Sr. and Margaret W. Benedictine storms into playoffs with LCA win Revenge comes early for Cadets, but Saints loom this Saturday By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

O

n the day after Halloween, there were still a few goblins floating around Bobby Ross Stadium at the Abbey. With a cold northeast wind whipping through the River Road campus, the Cadets hosted Liberty Christian in a key Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) game that ultimately decided who gets home field advantage for the playoffs … and who goes home. The Cadets (ranked first in the VISAA and 10th in the Richmond Times-Dispatch Top 10) took advantage of two defensive touchdowns and another on special teams to post a 35-19 victory over the Bulldogs. “We played well enough to win and took advantage of some LCA mistakes,” said Benedictine coach Greg Lilly. “We were able to establish the running game on offense which helped. Defense bent but didn’t break.” Scott Bracey led the Cadets on an opening quarter scoring drive with Ramon Jones capping the effort with a fouryard touchdown run.. Liberty answered when Lamar Webster sprinted down the Cadet sideline for a 68yard scoring run that drew the Bulldogs close at 7-6. The second quarter featured a pair of exchanged fumbles. With the Cadets driving into the redzone, a key fumble ended the drive. Ellis

Brooks returned the favor on the ensuing possession when he jerked the ball loose and Parrish Gordon picked it up and rumbled 86 yards for the score. Donovan Tennyson took the second half kickoff and returned it for a touchdown to give the Cadets a 21-6 advantage. Quarterback Jake Waldrop replaced an ailing Bracey and took full advantage of the opportunity, connecting with Tennyson for a 35-yard third quarter score and, added to a TJ Dunn pick six and another Jones rushing touchdown, the Cadets were up 35-19. “Scott hurt his non-throwing shoulder early in the first quarter,” Lilly said. “He wanted to play, but I pulled him so he could get some rest and get healthy for the playoffs.” With seven minutes left in the game, Liberty drove to the Cadet 17-yard line where they faced a fourth and 10. K’jon Coley picked off a Kaleb Bohrnstedt pass to end that threat and secure the win for the Cadets. The victory secures home field advantage for the Cadets, a notable edge in next week’s opening playoff games. Liberty ends their season at 4-5, but walked away with a statistical victory over the Cadets, doubling them in time of possession. But a few key plays and strong play by the Cadets’ defense and special teams made the difference on the cold, rainy day. “Our defense was awesome from an effort standpoint.

When you play fast and run to the football, good things will happen,” Lilly said. “LCA did a good job with their passing game but as I said, our defense bent but didn’t break and made them earn their points. The kicking game was a critical advantage for us on Saturday,.” The win over the three time state champions means Benedictine wraps up first

Top, Anthony Roberson (88) gathers in a Scott Bracey first half pass to set up the Cadets in Bulldog territory. Ramon Jones finished the drive for the Cadets. Bulldogs outlast Eagles 58-28 in win With the playoffs two weeks away, Fowler is happy to have his number one signal caller back under center, which allows his number one running back/receiver — Jordan Jefferson — to work his magic elsewhere. “He (Reid) looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. Symphony holiday concert slated for Dec. 14 at GHS Contributed report

Eight years ago, a spark ignited in the mind of Adeeb Hamzey. Hamzey, a Goochland Rotarian, suggested that his club bring the Richmond Symphony Orchestra to Goochland. Nothing quite like that had been done before in the county. A symphony performance might help fill an educational void, Hamzey reasoned. Some county residents might be exposed to classical music for the first time. The concert could also serve as a club fundraiser, with proceeds directed toward select charities in the county. Hamzey’s bold suggestion has evolved into a Goochland holiday tradition. Since its incep-

tion, the annual concert has attracted thousands and has raised more than $80,000 for Goochland charities. The tradition continues on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. Nearly 1,000 people are expected to pack the auditorium at Goochland High School for a performance of holiday music sponsored by MEDARVA Healthcare. The first half of music will feature selections from Handel’s Messiah. Following a brief intermission, the symphony will play a variety of popular holiday favorites. The concert will be led by Richmond Symphony’s new associate conductor, Keitaro Harada. Harada, a native of Tokyo, is also music

director of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra. In addition, he continues to serve as associate conductor for Arizona Opera. Charities benefiting from this year’s performance are: Goochland CASA, Goochland Education Foundation, Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services, Goochland Rotary Foundation, and the Goochland YMCA. “Our sponsorship of this holiday event reflects the very ideals of Rotary – ‘Service above Self’,” said Hamzey, the current president of Goochland Rotary. Tickets purchased in advance cost $20 for adults and $15 for children under 18. There is an extra $5 charge if purchased at the door.

Goochland Christmas Mother calling for community support Organizers: ‘adoptions’ key to meeting county need Contributed report

It is not yet Thanksgiving but Goochland’s Christmas Mother volunteers are already hard at work to meet the needs of those in the community who are otherwise unable to have a meaningful Christmas. The association is asking for support for “adoptions” for this year’s Christmas season. Adoptions have become a vital part of the association’s ability to help those in need. County organizations, businesses, churches, schools and families are needed to adopt and provide for eligible recipients. These groups give food and gifts to their adopted families in the name of the Christmas Mother, using guidelines provided.

Goochland’s Christmas Mother (GCM) program provides food, clothing and other special gifts and support to meet the needs of each qualified family. The work of hundreds of volunteers is required to organize the donated and purchased food and supplies, shop for and wrap gifts, and deliver the items to each family. A county resident is asked to serve as the Goochland Christmas Mother during the season, and 2014’s Christmas Mother is Meta Potts. Potts is working hard to raise contributions for the program. Individuals or organizations interested in adopting a family in need should contact the GCM Adoptions Committee at (804) 556-3411. Volunteers also are needed to shop on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and wrap gifts on Saturday, Dec. 6. For more information about adoptions or volunteer opportunities, visit the website at goochlandchristmasmother.org.

Tickets may be bought online at www.goochlandrotary.com. They are also available from any member of the Rotary Club of Goochland. The Rotary Club of Goochland is a volunteer service organization, consisting of 57 members who meet each Friday over breakfast at Richmond Country Club. The club’s members provide a wide variety of services for the underprivileged citizens of the county, from delivering free firewood to assisting in the construction of homes for Habitat for Humanity. For more information visit: http://www.goochlandrotary.com. Contributed by Goochland Rotary Club member Paul Miller.

During the American Legion Open House hosted by Post 215 on Oct. 4, the Post collected worn, tattered and torn American Flags. Proper respectful disposal of these flags is an honor and a duty of the American Legion veterans. The Flag Retirement ceremony was conducted by veterans Robin Elder, Joe Wadle and Leo Plante, who were assisted by the Boy Scouts from Troop 710. Contributed photo

2015 John Deere Financial Scholarships announced Contributed report

For more than 11 years, Southern States Cooperative has partnered with John Deere Financial to provide competitive financing programs for Southern States customers. In 2013, the two companies established a scholarship fund available to rising college sophomores pursuing an associate’s degree focused on agriculture. Applications for the 2015 academic year will

be accepted from Nov. 3, 2014, through Feb. 13, 2015. Up to five scholarships in the amount of $2,000 are awarded annually to students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong individual character and significant personal involvement in agriculture. Following the completion of the academic year, scholarship recipients also will receive a paid summer internship at a Southern States Retail

or Agronomy location. “Developing and growing leaders in this industry is crucial to our success,” John Hiatt, Southern States vice president for credit and property management, said. “We’re looking for students with a real enthusiasm for agriculture and a strong work ethic, who share the same love of the land that we do.” For more information about the Southern States /John

Deere Financial Scholarship Program, visit southernstates. com/scholarship or contact the company by email at scholarship@sscoop.com. In addition to the Southern States / John Deere scholarships, Southern States continues to fund a traditional four-year scholarship program through twelve land-grant universities in the Southern States territory.
