Goochland artist’s intricately crafted silhouettes making the cut with fans By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When Goochland artist Janet Lynch finishes one of her pieces, the real beauty is not necessarily in what is left in front of her. In fact, it is often found in what is gone. An expert in the exquisitely delicate art of scherenschnitte, a German word translated literally as “cutting paper,” Lynch creates intricately cut silhouettes, some so detailed she has had many people insist that she must be using some kind of computer software — or even a laser. “There are no lasers,” Lynch laughed last week, shortly after see Silhouettes > 4

Janet Lynch has been creating her detailed silhouettes — an art form known as scherenschnitte — for 27 years, using only a tiny pair of scissors and a cutting blade.

A word of warning: If you have any kind of problem controlling your sweet tooth, it’s probably best not to ask Phyllis Sykes what she plans to bring to the annual Fife Fire & Rescue Auxiliary Fall Craft Sale and Hunter’s Luncheon on Nov. 22. Though the event is not until Saturday, Sykes, who is organizing the annual event for the sixth time in a row, has been baking for two weeks. Her tally so far includes 30 pounds each of peanut butter balls, see Treats > 2

Treat continued from >1 peanut clusters, chocolate turtles and coconut bon bons. “Have you ever had a coconut bon bon?” she asked while being interviewed Nov. 15. No, the interviewer admitted, but said there was a sudden urge to indulge in one immediately. Unfortunately, anyone interested will have to wait until the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2

p.m., to gorge. Sykes said you’d better not get there too late: She typically sells out of everything — over 150 pounds of it — every year. Also featured at this year’s event will be baked and canned goods, kitchen items, jewelry, Scentsy candles, Mary Kay and plenty of options for Christmas shopping. Silhouettes continued from >1 returning from the annual Craftsman’s Christmas Classic show in Richmond where she was exhibiting and selling her work. Instead, Lynch uses only her hands, a pair of cuticle scissors, and sometimes a tiny utility knife to cut shapes from crisp black or white paper. She usually uses a pattern, which she either pulls from a book or draws herself. Then comes the cutting. And cutting. And more cutting. If she has gotten a bit faster since she first took up the art form 27 years ago, Lynch said it

still takes hours of painstaking work to craft her more detailed pieces. A piece entitled Tiger Butterfly, an astonishing, lacelike design she describes as one her most ambitious projects, took 27 hours to complete. Unlike painting or sculpture, scherenschnitte requires no specialized tools or costly materials. And Lynch, who has now become a sought-after artist, has never taken a lesson in her craft. After seeing a woman at a craft show displaying her own examples of scherenschnitte nearly three decades ago, Lynch decided to give it a try. A life-long artist with a talent for drawing, “I was amazed by the way it looked,” Lynch

said. “I just fell in love with it. I went home and picked up some scissors and a piece of paper and that was it.” The fact that Lynch’s very first piece was a Christmas tree could be seen as somewhat prophetic: All these years later, she is inundated with orders during the holiday season as fans seek her out to create custom Christmas gifts. While some artists might find themselves having to explain their passionate devotion to their work to family members, Lynch is fortunate in the fact that her husband David is an artist in his own right. An insurance agent by day, he is also a talented photographer whose work hangs side-by-side with his wife’s in their Manakin-Sabot art gallery. While the two continue to attend craft shows whenever they are able, and also sell pieces out of the gallery, they have

recently begun selling more of their work online through the e-commerce website Etsy. “It’s really taken off recently,” David said, and the couple has earned fans from as far away as France. Selling their work is rewarding, Janet and David said, but doesn’t quite compare to the joy of knowing they have made someone happy with one of their pieces. For Janet, a particular thrill comes when a silhouette she creates is instantly recognized. She recalled a little boy coming into her studio and catching a glimpse of a silhouette that his mother had asked Lynch to create. “He went ‘Hey, that’s me!’ ” Lynch remembered. “And that was really wonderful.” For more information on Janet Lynch’s work, visit artgalleryriverrd.com or call (804) 937-2353.

CASA volunteers attend state conference Twelve members of Goochland’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program recently attended the state wide CASA conference held in Hampton. The topics included issues of domestic violence; how trauma affects children; and learning a child’s story through their medical records, among others. CASA volunteers attending included Ginny Perrin, Eileen Kinelski, Pat Gaeser, John Henry, Carol Wiegmann, Katie Presson, board member Connie Reid, Meta and Earl Potts, Yvette McDermott Thomas, Darlene Churchill, Grace Butler and Ann Casey. The featured speaker at the closing luncheon was Katie Presson, who gave a moving talk of her involvement in the CASA program both as a child needing a CASA and now coming full circle to being sworn in as an advocate. She spent the summer as an intern working in the Goochland CASA office and is now a senior at the University of Richmond, working toward her goal of becoming a social worker.

Letters to the Editor Goochland County Veterans Day ceremony impressed resident Dear Editor, Veterans Day 2014 was a very special day for me after attending outstanding ceremonies at Randolph Elementary, Goochland High School, and Goochland Middle School. This was a first experience and I was very favorably impressed by the students and teachers I encountered. Some notables were Jennifer Gates, who coordinated the attendance of a number of veterans at Randolph and the gentleman who conducted the assembly in an outstanding manner. The Band Leader for Goochland

High School (GHS) and Goochland Middle School (GMS), Jay Sykes, also was outstanding in his presentations. I was particularly impressed by the high quality of music provided by the student orchestra he has trained. The young folks at all the schools sang extremely well. The young ladies in the red dresses at GHS were notably good and, as a frequent visitor to Las Vegas shows, I will say they are ready for prime time. And the principal of GMS certainly has a handle on, and the respect of all her students. She probably has superintendent of schools potential. I was very pleased to see my local tax money being well spent by the school system. As a retired Army engineer and director of information

management (DOIM). I think the schools are operating with reasonably current technology and certainly far better than I had in the 1950s and 1960s. Training and practice on the use of new equipment and software is essential to get full benefits, as Jen Gates said one of her kids had provided. And I was most pleased to see that despite a lot of national publicity about obesity problems in schools, there were very few overweight kids in the three schools I visited. The vast majority of kids appeared to be very physically fit, which I think is a tribute to the Goochland lifestyle. More than half of American see Letters > page 7

Ask Fern A Greetings, thankful readers! It’s November and I’m thinking all things “gathering”: Gathering in the harvest, gathering the remaining leaves, gathering by the fire on cooler evenings, and, as we round the corner to the holidays, gathering those closest to you for generous portions of comfort and joy! Nothing spells those divine words like a warm and inviting spread — just like the one I’m about to bless you with! But, before you dig in, remember: While you are cooking and hosting you are giving and receiving the highest gestures of human kindness — your time and your love. And while you’re doling out all of that good will, if you’re equally willing to be kind to yourselves and savor the preparations more by planning ahead and expecting distractions, you’ll have all the more reason to celebrate. And finally, whether you’re orchestrating a banquet for many or setting the table for one, may you enjoy the moment and find your cup full of ways to be hopeful, thoughtful, alive and thankful. Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@ goochlandgazette.com.

n September, Goochland County students began moving into the new Goochland Tech building, an 11,878-square-foot space fully equipped to host classes in fields including heavy equipment operation, carpentry and nursing. Last Sunday, the center hosted an Open House, offering county residents a chance to see all that the newly renovated space had to offer. According to Bruce Watson, the director of career and technical education for Goochland County Schools, the goal of the school system’s focus on Career and Technical Education (CTE) is to provide students the tools they need to fully explore what they might wish to pursue after graduation. — Roslyn Ryan
