Those fighting to save the building that once served as Goochland County’s black high school got some welcome news during a public meeting on Nov. 18. Though the idea of selling, or even demolishing, the 60,000-square-foot former Central High School had been raised by the county several months ago, county leaders are now embracing a solution that will see at least part of the building put to use. During the presentation, Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson announced plans County Administrator Rebecca Dickson to reopen the school’s gym by the end of January, a move that will help the county’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities to meet a 40 percent increase in youth basketball registration. Reopening the gym also will allow the county to “breathe some life” into a building that has sat vacant and deteriorating for years. That was welcome news to the crowd of around 50 people attending the meeting, many of whom attended Central High School and insist that the building is an important piece of the county’s African-American his-

Beloved ‘Sister’ to perform show in Goochland Dec. 6 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Benedictine Abbey in Goochland will play host to a very special guest on Dec. 6, welcoming actress Aubrey Manning for a special performance of “Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold.” Manning, who attended high school in Richmond before embarking on her acting career, will be playing Sister, the star of the acclaimed

“Late Night Catechism” series. Written by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan, the onewoman comedy production has been entertaining audiences for over two decades. It was created as a fundraiser to help support retired Catholic nuns, women who until recently did not receive any kind of Social Security benefits. Described as a wickedly funny, family-friendly show, “Sister’s Christmas Catechism” relies heavily on audience participation and on Manning’s

own ability to ad lib. Manning, an accomplished theater, film and television actress whose recent work includes appearances in the shows “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Criminal Minds,” said she is thrilled to be bringing the show to Goochland and hopes audiences take away a renewed appreciation for the important role nuns have played in the lives of so many. A bit more about Manning …

Her career was pushed forward by tragedy Though Manning’s parents were very proud of her success, she says they initially tried to discourage her from becoming an actress and steer her toward teaching. Not so of her sister, a highly accomplished nurse who always see Sister > 4 Contributed photo

Goochland heroes honored for service to community By Roslyn Ryan Editor

On the afternoon of Aug. 14, the Goochland Sheriff’s Office suddenly found itself facing a very serious situation. A man, reportedly suffering from a serious mental illness, had entered the woods near his home and was brandishing a knife, threatening to hurt anyone who came near him. Among those who responded that day was Deputy

Matthew Carrier, who had recently completed a training course focused on crisis intervention techniques. Displaying tremendous composure under pressure, Carrier was able to bring the situation to a close without anyone being injured. It was Carrier’s performance on that day that helped earn him special recognition last Thursday night during the 2014 Public Safety Night held at the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Lodge.

For more information, call (804) 708-9654 or e-mailasrieder@gmail.com.

The next step in the process will be the formation of a 12- or 13-member committee, which will be tasked with determining sustainable uses for the building. According to the presentation given during the meeting, possible uses for the building and grounds include creating a community garden; repurposing part of the building as office space for local small businesses; and using the kitchen that once served up students’ meals as a place to help feed those in need. To Dickson, the fact that the county and the advocates for saving Central High School

have been able to come to an agreement and move forward is a point of pride. “I think the board really listened to what the community said, and it’s really been an excellent process,” Dickson said. “Now we are going to get a good committee formed and we’ll have a good time looking at what the future might hold for the building.” Any Goochland resident interested in serving on the committee forming to help determine the future of the former Central High School building is urged to call the County Administrator’s office at (804) 556-5800.

served the county’s black students during a time when racial segregation was the law of the land, graduated its last high school class in 1969. In recent years, it has sat unused and untended, suffering from neglect and a lack of any concrete plan about it’s future. Now, however, that may be about to change. Though the cost of renovating the entire building would far exceed the $500,000 set aside for the project through the Capital Improvement Plan, the county is looking at opening up another part of the building for community use by next year.

In life, a little perspective can often go a long way By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If you’re ever looking for a solid hour of totally free entertainment, allow me to suggest this: Mosey on over to the website of your favorite Big Box retailer, find the house wares department and click on a subcategory (I prefer can openers and toaster ovens). Now, go ahead and click on a product that has only been awarded one or two “stars” in the customer review section. Click on that one. Why am I suggesting you do this? Because here, is this section, you will find perhaps the most stunningly vicious displays of outrage and indignation you will see just about anywhere on the Internet. It is here that you‘ll note the same kind of language – adjectives, for example, like “abhorrent,” “detestable” and “repugnant”—often used in settings such as, say, murder trials. This also is the place where inconveniences like a wobbly leg on a kitchen stool or an electric eggbeater with an uncomfortable grip are bemoaned in the same way we once talked about smallpox. Perhaps this is not so funny to everyone. But if you can make it through an

entire scathing, all-caps tirade about a piece of bread toasting unevenly without laughing hysterically, you are a far better person than me. Unfortunately, even as I laugh at these coffee pot crusader and waffle iron warriors, I know I cannot escape the rather embarrassing fact that we have at least one thing in common. While I wouldn’t put it on the Internet for all to see, I too have thrown my share of histrionic hissy fits over things that were fairly insignificant in the scheme of world events. I admit it. Whenever I find myself getting up a full head of steam about something ridiculous, I can’t help but think about a man I knew years ago named Frank. Frank was not what you would call a complainer. In fact, Frank might have been the most positive person I have ever had the pleasure to know. If Frank was faced with a problem, a less-than-optimally functioning can opener for example, he probably would not have noticed — he would have been far too happy about the fact that he had a can to open. He never complained about the weather, his wife or his taxes. He was the only persee Perspective > 7

Water storage tank project among bright spots in GA spending plan By Del. Lee Ware Contributing columnist

Though our state budget for the next two years has been reduced by $2.4 billion there is very good news for Goochland (and also Powhatan) residents in the spending plan the General Assembly finalized last Monday. Included in capital improvements is $5.1 million for a new 1 million gallon water storage tank at the treatment plant along Route 6 (River Road West) near the State Farm operated by the Department of Corrections (DOC). This tank is the last of three phases of major investments that will greatly improve water services to citizens and businesses in both Goochland and Powhatan counties. Already water lines have been replaced along River Road West in Goochland. This was Phase 1 of the project. Phase 2, which already is underway, will extend pipes across James River to Beaumont Correctional Center in Powhatan. When Phase 3— construction of

the elevated water tank—is completed, Goochland and Powhatan will be able to enter into a “regional cooperative agreement” with the DOC. Under the agreement, water capacity for residents of both counties, and also for DOC facilities along James River, will be vastly increased. Completion of this three-phase project is the first priority of the Board of Supervisors of both counties for the upcoming General Assembly of 2015, so it is a delight to have been able to secure the funding during the current Session, which finally concluded on Nov. 10. As county officials know, I had been “holding my breath” about the survival of my formal budget amendment, submitted last January, to authorize completion of this crucial Phase 3 of the project. Assembly had to reconvene six times since we adjourned in March to address a worsening economic outlook and budget projections, so of course I was concerned that the amendment might not emerge from the cutting table. Fortunately, my service as

chairman of the Finance committee of the House of Delegates ensures me a “place at the table” in such deliberations. I was also pleased to have both of my nominations for appointment to the courts in our district approved by my colleagues in both the House and Senate. Robert “Bob” Beasley, who has been Commonwealth’s Attorney for Powhatan, assumes his duties as a Judge of the General District Court on Dec. 15. David E. Johnson of Midlothian, a former Deputy Attorney General, will become a Judge of the Circuit Court in Chesterfield on the same date. I have known both men for many years, and each will without doubt serve us all with distinction. For the 2015 Assembly that convenes in mid-January I am carrying several bills requested by Goochland supervisors. Of this, and of the budget outlook for the coming year, I will be able to report next month. Del. Lee Ware represents the 65th House District consisting of western Goochland, eastern Fluvanna, all of Powhatan, and southwestern

Mr. Liesfeld is committed to recycling everything where possible; buildings, equipment, vehicles, furniture and even trees. When trees are removed from sites for buildings or roads they are usually burned or mulched. When time permits, Mr. Liesfeld takes trees that can be planed to his old sawmill and turns them into useable lumber, primarily for on-site projects. If you have ever attended his annual Spring Jubilee Heritage see Letter > page 7

Letter continued from >6 and Wine Festival you would see many things once destined for the trash heap repurposed and restored. It would not be feasible for Mr. Liesfeld to neglect the demands of his lucrative site contracting business to run these old mills “six days a week, 10 hours a day.” The equipment is not suitable for that type of commercial output. It is regrettable that Mr. Hooker did not first go to Mr. Liesfeld to discuss his concerns before escalating them to the county. We find Mr. Liesfeld to be a very reasonable, conscientious and helpful neighbor. A solution likely would have been found. Now he is forced into a timely and expensive request for a CUP for six days a week because he never

Yet, more than anyone else I have ever met, Frank had a way of turning life’s lemons into lemon meringue pie — and then passing that pie around for everyone else to enjoy. Some might have rolled their eyes at his uncanny ability to find delight in just about everything, and to let life’s little inconveniences roll off his back. But it also was infectious. knows when he will have a spare hour or day to operate the equipment. It could be a Monday or a Saturday, not Monday through Saturday. There was a recent community meeting that gave neighbors close to the Liesfeld property an opportunity to express concerns about the operation. We were unable to attend but heard that Mr. Liesfeld addressed those concerns with agreeable concessions; one in particular is that he would have his trucks drive through his property to Route 6 vs. using Old Columbia Road. Mr. Liesfeld is a good steward of this land and a contributing citizen to the welfare of Goochland County. He strives to keep and beautifully maintain the rural character of a large tract of land (over 500 acres) that produces little to no income.

Mr. Hooker’s property has been for sale for many years so we assume his primary concern is the resale value of his property. The “50-plus property owners within a two-mile radius” of the Liesfeld property to whom Mr. Hooker refers should be thankful for Mr. Liesfeld’s presence here. These large tracts of land are now few and far between in Goochland. All of our property values are enhanced by this beautiful tract in our midst. We intend to do what we can to support Mr. Liesfeld in his endeavor to keep it intact and rural and we encourage you to do likewise. Let’s support Mr. Liesfeld’s request for a CUP by attending the Planning Commission meeting on Dec. 4.

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, and since Thanksgiving is a good time to recommit to being more positive in general, I’m sure I’ll be thinking about my old friend Frank and his sunny outlook more in the days ahead. I hope I’ll be able to look

at more of the trivial things that annoy me and stop making mountains out of molehills — or mountains out of can openers, as the case may be. It’s a legacy he left me with, and one I should be thankful for every day of the year.

Hebron Presbyterian Church will be hosting the 41st lighting of its Christmas tree for the community’s enjoyment at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30. The church’s beloved cedar tree, and the Christmas joy it has always brought to its members and neighbors, resulted years ago in a memo-

rial endowment from the family of Dr. J. Asa Shields. That gift has kept the tree well maintained over the years. Hebron’s tree-lighting service will be followed by a reception of hot chocolate and donuts. Hebron Presbyterian is located at 1040 Shallow Well Rd. in Manakin-Sabot. All are welcome.

The dinner is the latest effort by the group to raise the $15,000 it will cost for Clay to undergo a life-extending cancer treatment in Houston, Texas, in early December. The group has currently raised close to $9,300. Heather Bryant, whose husband served with Clay during Operation

t’s nearly 5 p.m. on a Friday evening at the Goochland YMCA and the bubble stretched over the swimming pool is echoing with splashes and shouts. Several members from the Manta Rays swim team are in the middle of practice, and firstyear head coach Helen Brown is giving hands-on instruction in the pool. Though the Manta Rays have only 34 swimmers its roster this fall season – making it one of the smallest clubs in the YMCA of Greater Richmond Swim League – Brown has no doubts about the teams desire to win. “I call us ‘small but mighty,’ ” said Brown, still dripping water. “Even though we’re a third of their size of some of the teams we compete against, our swimmers always perform well because they want to learn the strokes and get better. “ Brown has been involved with the Manta Rays swim team since she moved to the Goochland area from Delaware in 2011. She started as an assistant and has worked her up way the chain of command. This fall is her first season as head coach. She’s taken to her new role with heart and enthusiasm – two characteristics she is trying to impart in her swimmers, which vary in age from 5 to 16, and in skill level from “beginner” to “accomplished.” “You go to one of our meets, and we’ve got parents and coach-

It’s very much a spirit-driven environment.” Indeed, and that sense of team pride is pertinent, considering the Manta Rays are Davids roaming – or more aptly, swimming – in a Land of Goliaths. To give one a sense of the Manta Rays size disadvantage in relation to other swim clubs, look no further than the swim meet that took place at the Midlothian YMCA the weekend of Nov. 15. The Manta Rays brought its full roster of 34 swimmers to the pool, yet were still outmatched almost 9-to-1 by a Midlothian team boasting 290 swimmers. The Manta Rays competed well, with “many of our kids post-

This disparity isn’t abnormal for the Manta Rays at meets. In fact, it’s the norm. This truth isn’t lost on aquatics director and assistant Alicia Kennedy. Kennedy said the goal to

maintaining team morale is creating a new definition of success in which “victories” are replaced with “team and individual improvement.” “Being a smaller team ... we’re not necessarily going to win a meet,” she said. “So we have to build team spirit in a different way. Kemmerly is one of the swimmers that first-year head coach Helen Brown has worked with to improve her stroke. “I’ve seen swimmers who have swam strokes incorrectly and they’ve never had an opportunity to make a correction,” said Brown. “So my goal this year has been to pull them aside and correct bad habits.” Bottom, Bayleigh Allen takes to the pool in a freestyle competition at the Midlothian YMCA. “You go to one of our meets, and we’ve got parents and coaches and kids up there screaming and cheering for each other,” said Brown. “It’s something special. Manta Rays continued from >12 kids by having them cheer on each other to get individual best times, not meet victories.” Brown and the coaching staff, which includes Kennedy and assistant coach Jenn Ford, have established a system of tracking individual and team goals and accomplishments to keep the swimmers motivated on a weekly basis. These goals are posted on a bulletin board between the YMCA building proper and the pool, so the swimmers can stop in and view their progress on the way to and from practice. “As you can see, we set a goal of dropping 240 seconds overall as a team,” said Brown, pointing to a graphic on the bullentin board. “We’ve almost met our goal and we’ve only had three meets.” After every meet, each swimmer gets a print out that compares their “before” and “after” times. Recently, Brown said, her swimmers have been setting personal records at just about every meet. “We have one little boy who had a difficult time swimming at first,” said Ford. “This last meet,

he shaved nine seconds off his time. So he comes over and goes ‘Miss Jenn! Miss Jenn! I took nine seconds off my time!’ To see his self-esteem grow was just so awesome.” es, improvement – and the boost in selfconfidence that naturally accompanies an increase in ability – is one of the main aims in Brown’s coaching philosophy. Progress is achieved by “never letting a swimmer swim a stroke incorrectly.” This is one of Brown’s most fundamental aims, all subsequent progress stems from this foundation. “I’ve seen swimmers who have swam strokes incorrectly and they’ve never had an opportunity to make a correction,” she said. “So my goal this year has been to pull them aside and correct bad habits.” Brown also is keenly aware that the sport of swimming does not exist in a vacuum. In light of this realization, she has implemented a holistic approach to her coaching philosophy. She addresses this progressive approach in the comprehensive “Goochland Manta Rays Newsletter” assembled prior to the fall season.

In it, Brown muses on a number of topics (visualization, stroke mechanics, etc.) that she believes are important to becoming a successful swimmer. Perhaps the most noteworthy graphic in the newsletter is the “Propeller of Success” (shown below), a visual representation of how to succeed in and out of the pool: Each swimmer is placed at the center of the propeller (designated by an asterisk) and in order to keep the propeller moving swiftly each swimmer must “balance the different roles in life while focusing on all aspects of swimming.” “We work on the physical aspects of swimming, the mental aspects of how to compete, nutrition to keep the body working at top form,” she said. “It’s a total program, for sure.” Indeed, and the Manta Rays invite swimmers of all skill levels to embrace the challenges and rewards of life in the pool. As Brown said, “We take swimmers as they are, and take them where they want to go.” The only true requirement for initiation into the Manta Rays swim club is the completion of a 25 freestyle and a 25 backstroke. “It doesn’t have to be pretty,” assured Brown. “But they

incredible. You did so well,” said Brown. “And that’s the kind of feeling we have here. It’s very supportive and team-oriented.” “Everybody has something to work on, and we all look out for each other,” she added. “We might not be a big club, but we stick together like family.”
