Turner continued from >1 way or another, board chairman Manuel Alvarez said after Turner received the award. Turner first began her career as an administrative secretary in the County Administrator’s office in 1978, transferring to the Clerk’s Office in 1979. She was elected to her first term as Clerk of the Courts in 1991. Over the course of her career, Turner guided the Clerk’s Office into the digital age. While managing her primary duty of recording deeds, deeds of
trust, liens and all other documents pertaining to land use in Goochland County, Turner also led the conversion of a manual indexing system to a computerized one. Known for being both knowledgeable and patient, Turner also found time to work with the Goochland Historical Society to preserve records dating back to the 1700s. Accepting her award, Turner said she was honored. Looking back on her career, Turner said she had seen many things change, but the one consistent thing had been her staff.
“I’ve seen a great deal of growth in the county since I began years ago, and accomplished a great deal, Turner said. “And I was able to do that because of the dedicated and competent staff I had. In accordance with state code, the county has petitioned a judge to decide if a special election will need to be held before next November, when Turner’s term would have expired. Beginning on Jan .1, Deputy Clerk Dale Agnew will assume the duties of the office until a decision is made or a special election is held.

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission came together for a joint workshop last Thursday, attempting to fine-tune a proposal that would allow for a new, mixeduse development zoning category to be used in county planning. Tom Coleman, principal planner with the county Planning Department, said the new category, known as MU, would involve the use of Conditional Use Permits and would incorporate amended standards currently used for multi-family housing units. One key aspect of the new
designation is that it would allow for significant flexibility in the approval process, and leave county officials “better able to address unique considerations,” Coleman said. While Goochland County does not have any examples of a mixed-use development that would be covered by the new MU category, residents don’t need to look far to find one: The West Broad Village, a development featuring housing units nestled in with — and built on top of — retail stores, a children’s museum and a health club, is only a few miles from the county’s eastern border. According to information presented during the meeting, using the MU zoning would require more work up-front for developers, including a significantly more intensive review and approval process. The county also is leaning toward requiring developers to preserve a commercial frontage of at least 1,000 feet with every project, allowing
for retail development. Leaders also have specified that the new plan would not involve any standalone multifamily units. One area where the designation might be most appropriate is in Centerville in the county’s east end. “We’d love to be able to cut our teeth here,” County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said, advocating for a “baby steps” approach. Developer Scott Gaeser told the group that he would ultimately be in favor of such a move. “I welcome it,” Gaser said, “because I think it will allow us to control the character of our projects and document things from the beginning. I think it’s a positive.” According to a time line proposed during the meeting, the county plans to have a draft prepared of the new ordinance by the end of January. Board members plan to hold a workshop on the new ordinance in February.

Tree continued from >1 The tree, which features a steel frame and 480 individual limbs, may look familiar to some: In its former life, it was used as the centerpiece of the holiday décor at Short Pump Town Center. According to County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, county leaders made contact with the Short Pump folks about a year ago, once they found out the tree would no longer be used there. “The timing was right,” Dickson said, pointing out that the county already has a storage area set aside for the tree once the holidays are over. The tree, which features
20,808 lights, took a dedicated group of workers about a day to install, County Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities Derek Stamey said. Dickson and Stamey said they hope the annual tree lighting ceremony, which features a much-anticipated visit from Santa, as well as games and activities for children, will continue to grow in the coming years. The idea, Dickson said, is to create a space where county residents can come and celebrate the holidays together, whether singing carols or simply sitting and enjoying the view. “What we really want to do is have something that brings the community together,” Dickson said. “That’s the goal.”

Not perfect is perfectly OK By Roslyn Ryan Editor
While the holidays may cause most people intense stress, I typically glide through them with ease, greeting the New Year rested, relaxed and without a hair out of place. I always have all my Christmas cards written, stamped and mailed by the day after Thanksgiving. I never get overwhelmed by gift lists that are too long, or budgets that are too tight. I have never gotten so frustrated trying to wrap an oddly-shaped gift that I finally dumped it into a paper grocery bag and slapped a bow on it. And if you believe any of this at all, there’s a bridge in Western Goochland I’d like to sell you. Seriously. No, like many people I know, I have been accused of occasionally losing perspective this time of year, as the pressures mount to make the holidays perfect. I know I’m not alone, mostly because others of my ilk are fairly easy to spot. You see us in the drug store, trying to figure out which set of boxed holiday cards hits exactly the right note ( Is cartoon Santa too unsophisticated? Does a card with Joyeux Noël on it make me look too snooty? ). We also are the ones carefully writing out menus that look infinitely better — and easier to pre-

pare — on paper than they are in real life (Cherries Jubilee? Why not just call it Fastest-Way-to-BurnYour House-Down pudding?). I’ve wondered for years what it is about the holiday season that tends to bring out the lunatic in so many of us. How, for example, do otherwise sane, rational people manage to forget every year that the world will not careen wildly off its axis if the tablescaping doesn’t look as if it was plucked directly from a Better Homes and Gardens photo spread? And how does a grown person justify tearing their hair out because they can’t find the perfect gift for their spouse’s boss’s girlfriend? The worst part is that, for so many of us, crazy has become as much a part of Christmas as jingle bells and eggnog. Obviously, we need a change. I know it’s a long shot, but I have once again promised myself that this season I will keep hold of the reins when it comes to shopping, entertaining and all the other merry minefields that threaten to upend my sanity this time of year. For all my fellow freaker-outers, here’s hoping that we can finally learn to lean back and let go, enjoying all the wonderful things about the season that have nothing to do with finding the perfect gift or planning the perfect meal. A little less stress, a bit more forgiveness, and a much more “joyeux” holiday season for all — who could ask for anything more?

Two educators left lasting legacies behind By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
The holiday season is a time to reflect on the past, remember the ones we loved and loved us, and the people who truly made differences in our lives. I suppose it’s a sad reality that some people go through their entire lives touching few and simply going through the motions of their daily
interactions with their fellow men and women. And, then, there are those who touch everyone they meet and leave a legacy of compassion when they depart, never forgotten and often remembered on occasions like this. Like many people, I was lucky enough to live close to Eleanor and Wilton Tenney. Their home was a perpetual ball of energy with students coming and going at a
frantic pace. Eleanor taught school at Patrick Henry High School and Wilton was a biology professor at the University of Richmond. Both possessed a love for photography that propelled their lives into a mystical search for the perfect photo, or technique to enhance it. Both won numerous awards in see Legacies > 7

Putting your vegetable garden to bed as winter approaches By Jan Crampton Master Gardener
R
aising kids and raising crops have more than a few notions in common: feed and water them well, give them enough light and space to grow straight and strong, and protect them when their natural defenses are weak. And when it comes to our children’s sleep, the experts tell us to establish and follow a consistent bedtime routine. When autumn arrives, it turns out that similar advice holds true for your vegetable garden. If you spend time preparing the ground now, adding organic matter and working it in, the soil will be enriched and improve while it rests over the winter. Come spring, your bedtime preparation will pay off in the form of more fertile soil for planting. When we say “organic matter,” we’re referring to materials
Legacy continued from >6 local photography shows and their work has a signature style that reflects their dedication and devotion to the art. Wilton and Eleanor transferred that love of photography to the many students they mentored in a small darkroom located in their house. They provided cameras to those who couldn’t afford them, and encouraged beginning photogs to reach beyond their preconceived boundaries. They gave back to a community in ways that resonate worldwide today. Who knows how many people passed through that door where safe lights were the norm, but the darkroom was always busy. Wilton and Eleanor, con-
such as dead leaves, yard and garden wastes, kitchen scraps, newspaper and sawdust, animal manures, and so on. These items are the typical ingredients in compost, but you don’t need all of them. Even dead leaves chopped up by your lawn mower are very beneficial to the soil. Late fall is the ideal time to add organic matter to your garden bed. The microorganisms in your soil will have several months to break down the materials. Any manure present in the compost will have time to cool, making it less likely to burn delicate young plants. And because homemade compost might contain excess salts, working it in now gives those salts time to leech away. You can wait until spring to compost, and it certainly will benefit the garden. But as with kids, an earlier “bedtime” for the soil means better results later. Here’s checklist of tasks and

versely, were never too busy to help with a problem or explain a better way to achieve the desired result. Eleanor would buy and pass out cameras to her students, while Wilton toted his trusty Hasselblad to Ashland to shoot team photos for the yearbook. It’s hard to say just how many people passed through Wilton and Eleanor’s house over the years, but, among the numerous future doctors, lawyers and other professionals and even a Pulitzer Prize winner, there was me. I’m only one insignificant graduate of the school of Wilton and Eleanor, but an appreciative recipient of that honor. Others have achieved much more, and many work today because of what they learned at that tiny house on
Cutshaw Place, but none are more appreciative. I write this with full recognition that many will recognize and relate to this story with fond memories and admiration. Often, the ones who accomplish the most in life are the people most unaffected by accolades or recognition. But, it soothes me to think that Wilton and Eleanor must have taken great satisfaction in the successes of the number of people they touched in their lives well lived. Their legacy thrives as the folks they mentored mentor others, and I can’t help but amaze at the infinite number of photographs taken in the years since their passing, each one with a connection to that tiny darkroom … and Wilton and Eleanor Tenney.
before the ground freezes, plow or till the organic matter into the garden soil to a depth of about six to eight inches. Tilling in the fall accomplishes several things: it speeds the absorption of nutrients into the garden soil; allows for better contraction and expansion of the dirt, which improves the soil’s structure; and it enables earlier and easier spring planting. 5. If your garden has been too wet to plow, or if the ground is already too cold, you can leave the organic matter on top of the soil and cover it lightly with
mulch or chopped leaves. To give the soil time to warm up for planting your earliest crops, plow this “blanket” into the soil as soon as spring conditions allow. 6. Now that a full cycle of gardening is behind you, and the garden is all “tucked in” until spring, take another moment to reflect on your hard work. Were there any tools that might have made any of that work easier? Did any of your tools not survive the season? Put those on your Christmas list and see what Santa brings!

Dining with danger?
Ask Fern A Dear Fern, I am hosting dinner for around 15 people this Christmas, which I am truly thrilled about. I have spent hours planning my menu and making sure everything will be just so on the big day. The only problem? I just found out that my son will be bringing his new girlfriend, who is a vegan. While I am pretty sure I know what that is, I have no idea what to serve her! Is it possible to include her without cooking an entirely separate meal?

tions. Milk, soy, eggs, wheat, tree nuts, fish ,and shellfish are the foods most likely to cause a reaction among food allergy sufferers. Each year allergies account for millions of outpatient office visits and hospitalizations. For some, allergies may be so severe that they result in extreme swelling and anaphylaxis. to run the risk of insulting another by making reference to such a personal procedure. For example, if your approach were to be: “I heard you got a nose job! What an improvement!” I would dare say you had neglected to broach the subject delicately enough to rise to your complimentary intentions. I’m not sure you’re prepared to be in the hot seat and I see no reason to bring up cosmetic surgery unless the individual chooses to talk about it. It is not considered “ignoring it” however, if you were to say, “You look wonderful!” and leave it at that. I see absolutely no harm in those words and imagine they would be well received!
Dear Fern, I am hoping you can help me handle a sensitive situation I have run into more than once over the last few years. I will occasionally run into a female friend who has obviously had a bit of “work” done. My question is this: Is it impolite to make reference to the change, even if it is to pay the person a compliment? I’ve thought about ignoring Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, it, but wouldn’t that be rude mother (of three), interior too? Allergies continued from >8 reactions, be sure to take into consideration food restrictions when preparing a meal and consider the following tips before and during the party.
Speak to guests
cess go more smoothly.
Read labels Certain foods, especially premade items, may be hiding certain ingredients that can be dangerous to those with a food allergy or a dietary restriction. Foods that contain gelatin may be inappropriate for those on a vegetarian or vegan diet. Some items that are wheatfree may be produced in factories that also process wheat products. You have to be careful with all foods you serve.
The best way to learn of any food restrictions your guests may have is to ask them if they have any such restrictions. Some guests may only eat kosher foods while others may have a gluten intolerance. Knowing what to expect and being able to Consider kosher research proper preparation Kosher foods tend to methods can make the pro- be made of simple ingredi-
ents and packaged in strict adherence to religious practices. Kosher foods are now easier to find than ever, as a substantial percentage of the packaged goods available in the supermarket are certified kosher. People with food allergies may appreciate the simplicity of kosher foods, and you can rely on these items when preparing meals.
Label foods clearly Your mother’s recipe for turkey casserole may be a fan-favorite, but those with food allergies may shy away from items they can’t easily recognize. Attach tags to buffet-style items that indicate their ingredients so guests with dietary restrictions can
still enjoy a good meal like everyone else.
Prepare some foods separately When cooking, be mindful of kitchen hygiene by using separate dishes, bowls and utensils for preparing foods to avoid cross-contamination. If you will be preparing something with a known allergen, such as dairy or wheat, keep it separate from other foods and do not use mixing bowls or spoons for the different foods. It may take some extra effort, but making guests who have dietary restrictions feel comfortable at your next party will be worth it.

Water Control Board will vote on sludge plan The Baltimore, Maryland-based company Synagro applied for the permit to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in 2013. The permit, which would allow spraying of the sludge on more than 16,000 acres across the state – including on land in Goochland — has drawn a firestorm of opposition from neighbors as well as county officials. Officials from Goochland, King and Queen, King William, New Kent and Hanover counties have written DEQ opposing the permit. Last September, the Hanover County Board
Proposal by Synagro has drawn criticism from residents across the area, concerns about safety raised Contributed report
The State Water Control Board is expected to vote Thursday, Dec. 11. on a controversial permit to apply industrial sludge on Virginia farms and forest lands. TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30

Chris Peace (R-97) also announced legislation to place a moratorium on the application of industrial sludge in his district, sharing the concerns of his constituents that the materials pose a threat to people, streams and wells. The way I see it

Post 215 Auxiliary celebrates season by giving to others Contributed report
The American Legion Auxiliary unit from the Goochland Post 215 has been busy. To celebrate National Education Week in November, boxes of fruit and snacks were delivered to every Goochland school. According to club leaders, it was a simple way to show their appreciation for all the hard work done by Goochland teachers. Shortly after Thanksgiving, a group of volunteers from the Auxiliary and Post visited the McGuire Veterans
Administration (VA) Medical Center for their annual Christmas tree decorating project. With many volunteers, the tree was soon assembled, decorated and placed in the main lobby of the Medical Center where it can be seen by everyone. To the delight of the volunteers, while decorating, they were serenaded by Fr. James Connolly with his original version of a Christmas carol titled “Sing out an Alleluia!” The decorations include candy canes, which
are replenished often for all the visitors of the Medical Center to enjoy. The group is now working on stuffing stocking with articles needed by patients and homeless veterans. The stockings are set to be delivered before Christmas. The Auxiliary meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Post Hall. Contact Nancy Gregory at (804) 556-6433 for more information or check the Post’s web site: www.goochlandlegionpost215.com
Holiday concert slated for Dec. 14 at GHS Contributed report
At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, nearly 1,000 people are expected to pack the auditorium at Goochland High School for a performance
of holiday music sponsored by MEDARVA Healthcare. Tickets purchased in advance cost $20 for adults and $15 for children under 18. There is an extra $5 charge if purchased
at the door. Tickets may be bought online at www.goochlandrotary.com. They also are available from any member of the Rotary Club of Goochland.
I just returned from a wonderful weekend with my three daughters. For the last eight years we have managed to squeeze in a short get away right before the Christmas holidays. It has been anything but easy trying to get everyone’s schedule to mesh, but we have all been intentional about making this “Sister Trip” happen every year. Thankfully my sonin-laws have been very supportive in letting me steal their wives for a couple of days. The “Sister Trip” is such a special time of reconnection, refection and making memories together. We laugh, and we cry, as we reflect on the past and talk about hope for the future. Life gets so busy at times, we assume the ones we love the most know how much we love and miss them, but spoken reminders are always welcome. This is truly a wonderful time of the year. Typically I rant about ways to avoid the holiday weight gain or health related gifts for the ones you love, but in this article I want to give you some holiday do’s instead of holiday don’ts. In reality the self-regulation and problem solving skills that go with weight maintenance have to be practiced throughout the whole year not just during the holiday season. If you do that then the holiday season will not throw you off of your lifestyle game plan to the point of despair with pounds of unwanted weight gain.
Here are a few holiday do’s: Do enjoy some of the foods you love. Avoiding the foods you love may create more stress than just enjoying a smaller portion of them. Note the word smaller portion. Do focus on community involvement like attending tree lighting ceremonies, going caroling, or participating in worship services. This can be very nourishing to the soul. These events are a big part of the holiday season. Do attend social activities. Use this time to reconnect with some of your family or friends that you have not spent quality time with in this last year. Do make an effort to rekindle friendships that may have been compromised over the past year. There is a reason they were your friends to start with, try and find common ground and forgiveness. Do express gratitude to those who have helped you this past year. Do be generous. This does not always have to be with presents or money, be generous with your time. Who do you know that might need a visit, a phone call, a lunch date? Do embrace the peace the season brings, but don’t stress if everything is not perfect. In other words, if Hallmark Christmas is not happening at your house (it doesn’t happen that way in most homes), don’t worry just embrace your reality. Do know that it is never too late to make happy memories and never too late to make new traditions to pass down to the next generation. Merry Christmas to all! Manakin Company 1 to hold annual Santa Run Sunday Contributed report
The Manakin Company 1 will hold its annual Santa Run on Sunday Dec. 14. This event is not only a celebration of Christmas but a way for members to connect with residents in and bring some Christmas spirit into the neighborhoods. During the event, members dress up and children get the chance to meet the fire department
volunteers and see Santa on the fire trucks. Due to time constraints, the members cannot go to every neighborhood but they will do their best to spend time in the neighborhoods where they can meet and greet the most residents. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for the following Sunday.

Annual John Deere Scholarships announced Contributed report
For more than 11 years, Southern States Cooperative has partnered with John Deere Financial to provide competitive financing programs for Southern States customers. In 2013, the two companies established a scholarship fund available to rising college sophomores pursuing an associate’s degree focused on agriculture. Applications for the 2015 academic year will be accepted through Feb. 13, 2015. Up to five scholarships
in the amount of $2,000 are awarded annually to students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong individual character and significant personal involvement in agriculture. Following the completion of the academic year, recipients also receive a paid summer internship. “Developing and growing leaders in this industry is crucial to our success,” John Hiatt, Southern States vice president for credit and property management, said. “We’re looking for students with a real enthu-
siasm for agriculture and a strong work ethic, who share the same love of the land that we do.” For more information about the Southern States /John Deere Financial Scholarship Program, visit southernstates. com/scholarship or contact the company by email at scholarship@sscoop.com. In addition to the Southern States / John Deere scholarships, Southern States continues to fund a traditional four-year scholarship program through twelve landgrant universities.
