School division receives blemish-free financial audit Past problems involved lack of internal controls By Roslyn Ryan Editor
The Goochland County School System recently received some welcome news concerning its books, earning a spotless report from auditors PB Mares. The report marks the first time in recent memory that the school system has not received any negative feedback on its audit, the school system’s Director of Finance Debbie White said last week. The news was cause for celebration in her office, White said, particularly in light of the amount of cooperation and teamwork it takes to earn a clean audit. “I really have to give kudos to the entire staff,” said White, who has been in her position for two years. “It really takes the effort of everyone, and everyone needs to pay such close attention to the details.” White said the issues in the past were not related to any financial malfeasance on the part of school employees, but rather reflected a number of areas that needed to be brought under tighter control.

One issue involved the fact that purchase orders were not always pre-authorized, a mark against the office that has now been corrected. In addition, while obtaining purchase orders was once cumbersome and time-consuming, White and her staff now use an electronic purchase order system that allows for a one-day turnaround on most requests. “It really keeps things moving,” White said. White said she has been particularly proud of the progress the office has made, as evidenced by the audit. “It’s been really exciting to watch the organization grow stronger from an internal controls perspective,” she said, “but it really does take everybody doing Director of their job. they more than make up for in perseverance. Over the past several years, the DeHarts have battled Mother Nature almost constantly, including suffering a wallop from the severe “Derecho” storms that battered the Eastern Seaboard in 2013. So far this year, wind has already damaged the DeHart’s 16-foot sleigh, a 20-foot Santa Claus and some of their lights. Other threats have loomed as well: a visit from a neighbor’s dog last year left an inflatable snowman in critical condition, though he has since been repaired. Maintaining the display is
hard work, to be sure. But, despite the commitment of time and money, both DeHarts say they wouldn’t trade the experience of seeing the joy on the faces of the people riding by their home this time of year, particularly when David is decked out in his full Santa suit. “We know we’re not competing with those places up the road that have 70,000 lights or whatever, Bobbie said. “But this is really just something for the kids to enjoy. That’s why we do it.” The DeHarts’ Christmas display, located at 2375 Rockille Road, is lit nightly beginning at 5 p.m., weather permitting.

“summer slump” – one of several terms for the dip in retention many students suffer during the summer months away from the classroom — a year-round, or “balanced,” schedule has been adopted in many school districts across the country. Potter reported to the board that the number of students who would be likely to enroll in the program next fall fell significantly below the goal of enrolling 30 to 40 students.
Potter noted as well that some families expressed concern about having one child attending school on a different schedule than other schoolage children in the family. The cost of the program was also an issue. Because the school district did not receive as much state funding for the pilot program as school officials had hoped they would, Goochland County Schools would have to make up more of the cost than had originally
been projected. Considering the information provided, Superintendent James Lane said he was not in favor of pursuing the pilot program. Weighing the cost against other school system needs, “this does not fall ahead of those things at this time,” Lane said, though he did insist that taking the program off the table for now “doesn’t mean we can’t continue the conversation.”

Nontraditonal students offer example of courage By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For the past several months, I’ve been fortunate enough to watch an unexpectedly inspiring scene unfold. Thanks to the fact that my husband recently decided to take an online course at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, I’ve had the chance to peek over his shoulder from time to time and “meet” — albeit only in the virtual sense — a few of the other members of his class. While those taking classes at Reynolds hail from many different backgrounds and cover a wide age range, I have noticed that a significant number of them are older adults who are either entering the collegiate ranks for the first time or returning to school after many years away. In a number of cases, students put off furthering their education because of family obligations, or because it wasn’t financially possible when they graduated from high school decades ago. Others meant to earn their degree sooner but life, as they say, got in the way. As students introduced themselves via the virtual classroom’s online discussion board, I began to notice another com-

mon theme running through many of the narratives: trepidation about taking this next step, and at least some degree of anxiety about whether they would be able to handle the workload. In many cases, students had to familiarize themselves not just with the material in the class, but also with the technology involved in taking an online course. Many also were juggling work or family obligations, then sitting down after a long day to write papers, read assigned chapters, and study for tests. Some, of course, probably found the increased workload to be simply too much. But others have pushed forward and kept their eyes on their goal. Now, as the end of the first semester draws near, they have much to be proud of. As the old adage goes, true bravery isn’t about not being scared — it’s about being scared and forging ahead anyway. As these “non-traditional” students continue to prove, it’s never too late to reach to invest in yourself. As they move closer to the New Year — always a good time to revisit dreams and goals — they set a fine example for us all.

Dad gains new appreciation for kids’ boundless energy By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
It was one of those weeks you’d rather forget. It was clearly a case of too few hours to achieve what I needed to get done. And, this time of year, it seems it happens more and more often where we end up coming up short on some of the tasks that seem low priority. So, after a busy Friday that included picking up a Christmas tree, making it one more year I promised not to buy a live one passed with pine needles all over my house. For some reason, I just can’t make the transition to the much easier, more efficient and perfectly shaped imitation ones. At this point, I might be too old to change, at least in that aspect of my life. After decorating the tree, my children informed me we were scheduled to attend the Winter Wonderful Festival at the twins’ school. I must admit it was the
last thing I wanted to hear at that point, and I was tempted to come back with an elaborate excuse why we couldn’t attend. But, I fought off the impulse. We all dressed and stood in line to gain admission to the signature event of the year. Excitement was in the air as little girls and boys dressed in their Christmas best dashed about with an endless amount of energy. I searched for a good seat where I could relax and perform my usual function at these types of events, handing out money to my children.
As more and more children arrived, it got louder and louder. My kids were among the dozens who ran around to the sounds of a real DJ, sometimes darting down the hall or from room to room. I reckoned I was the oldest parent in the room, and several wellintentioned questioners confirmed my fears. “Are you here with your grandchildren?” one polite lady asked. “Unfortunately, no,” I joked back. My daughter told me I looked like a grumpy old man sitting in the corner, so I etched my facial expression upward to resemble a more pleasant look. As I sat and thought about all the upcoming things that need to be done before Christmas, the noise level increased and the activity reached a fever pitch. see Energy > 6

CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS
Help for the holidays
Don’t panic! It’s still not too late to ship your holiday packages By Barbara Soderlin World-Herald staff writer
W
ith seven days to go until Christmas, retailers are working to get the message out: There’s still time to shop and ship, especially if you pay attention to shipping deadlines and don’t mind paying extra for last-minute service.
A few online retailers, including Amazon and Omaha-based Hayneedle, are guaranteeing Dec. 24 arrival even for packages purchased as late as Dec. 23. After all, while some shoppers may be kicking back with eggnog, all their gifts wrapped and shipped weeks ago, those people are, well, unusual. More than half of Christmas shoppers typically won’t have fulfilled their lists by “Super Saturday,” the Saturday before Christmas, a RetailMeNot survey suggests. Some retail industry observers believe Super Saturday will be the biggest shopping day of

this year, following declining Black Friday sales. Just as they pushed holiday deals earlier this year, starting sales before Halloween, retailers are now competing for holiday spending until the last possible moment. “It’s risky,” said Trae Bodge, senior lifestyle editor for RetailMeNot, a digital coupon site. “Last year, a surge in online shopping combined with wintry weather led to nearly 2 million packages not being delivered on time,” she said. This year, “what I was anticipating was that retailers and shipping companies would not be encouraging last-minute shipping; however, it’s playing out differently,” she said. It could all work out, she said. UPS and FedEx have added employees and beefed up processing capabilities. Monday was the busiest shipping day for both services. UPS said Dec. 22 would be its busiest delivery day. Amazon has added warehouses closer to where people live. And retailers like Walmart and Target increasingly are using brick-and-mortar stores to fulfill online orders. Still, why wait? “I do worry if there is bad weather in certain areas of the country, that could cause some issues,” she said.
Watch those deadlines: Amazon: Friday, Dec. 19, is the last day to get free shipping and standard shipping from Amazon for non-Prime purchases that arrive by Dec. 24. You can wait until Dec. 22 for two-day shipping rates, or order Dec. 23 and pay one-day shipping rates. You ship it: Wednesday is the last day for ground shipping for FedEx, and UPS customers can push it to Thursday. Expedited shipping is available at a higher cost until Dec. 23 with FedEx Express, and until Dec. 24 for UPS’s Express Critical service. If you were hoping to send it by U.S. Mail, Monday was the deadline for standard post, but first-class and priority mail customers have until Saturday, and Priority Mail Express packages can go out as late as Dec. 23 and make it the next day. Online stores: Omaha’s Hayneedle has a “shop fast shipping” section on its site, gifts guaranteed to arrive by Christmas if ordered by Dec. 23 thanks to fulfillment centers in Ohio and California. Prices rise significantly the longer a shopper waits. Other retailers that say they can accept orders for Dec. 24 delivery see Shipping > 11

Ask Fern A Dear Fern, I am hoping you can help make this the year that I finally get my wife something that she wants for Christmas. I have tried for years to tease out of her what she would like, but she always says the same thing: “You don’t have to get me anything!” I fell for that once, and quickly learned my lesson. But this year I am drawing a total blank. Any ideas on a thoughtful gift for the woman who won’t offer up any hints about what to get her? Dear Hopeless Romantic, Your wife would probably consider your caring question the dearest gift of all! That said, I’m sure she knows how lucky she is — and we do want to keep this streak going — so I have several suggestions for you. Since we ladies tend to value gifts that require a “smidge” more thought, I’ve put my suggestions in “package deal” form ... If your wife is an avid reader, pick up the newest Kindle and a gorgeous throw blanket and have her all set for those nights when she’s ready to curl up with a good read. Lacking date nights? Present your wife with a gift certificate to the mall and tell her to shop for something fun to wear on the dinner cruise you’ve reserved for a certain special evening. If your wife is more of a homebody and enjoys lounging, a bathtub caddy full of luxurious bath products would be appreciated. Don’t forget to throw in beautiful sleepwear and a pair of ultracozy slippers. For the lady who likes to travel, you won’t go wrong by booking a weekend away at her favorite destination, whether it be the big city, a sleepy rural town or the see Ask Fern > 11

Cabela’s site cautions that dates are subject to “normal’ weather, volume and carrier service levels.” Retailers that aren’t pushing it with Dec. 23 ordering still are telling customers they can order as late as Dec. 22, including Victoria’s Secret and Lands’ End. Omaha Steaks wants orders to be placed by Thursday to guarantee delivery by Christmas, but said orders can be placed with an extra charge up to Dec. 22. Nebraska Furniture Mart is offering free delivery by Christmas for local online orders placed by Wednesday. That’s for delivery via UPS to certain zip codes in the Omaha and Kansas City areas. The offer applies only to items small enough to send by UPS, and there is a $49 minimum purchase. Some deadlines have passed Monday was the last day Borsheim’s provided free ground shipping with delivery before Christmas, but second-day and overnight shipping are available through Friday. Big spenders take note: Free overnight shipping is available on jewelry purchases of $10,000 or more, Mondays through Thursdays. Marketing director Adrienne Fay said, “We’re not seeing panic set in yet for shoppers. I think that’s going to set in this weekend.” Doors are open Brick-and-mortar stores are accommodating last-minute shopping by extending their hours. Kohl’s will be open for more than 100 straight hours, starting at 6 a.m. Friday through 3 p.m. Christmas Eve. J.C. Penney plans door-buster deals on Saturday and product giveaways on Sunday. It’s Christmas morning ... There’s always time to buy an electronic gift card online and have it appear in the recipient’s Inbox before the day is done. After all, a gift just isn’t the same when it’s late. “It’s so disappointing, especially on Christmas, not to receive those gifts on time,” Bodge said.

Byrd Elementary School students honor county bus drivers through ‘Blizzard’ show Story cast county drivers as heroes to stranded students Contributed report
On Monday, Dec. 8, Byrd Elementary School students held their annual Winter Program in the Goochland High School auditorium. The program, entitled “The Blizzard of 2014,” included students from preschool to 5th grade, and was an original play written by the music teacher and inspired by the students. The musical told the story of students getting stuck in school on the last day before winter break. As the story went, it seemed as though some very clever snowflakes waited on purpose to fall to the ground until every bus rolled into school — just so the students would be present to play with them. Snowflakes love for students to play in them, but every time they fall at a school, expecting lots of children to come out, the schools are empty instead. So, the spy-flakes fool the weatherman by holding onto one another very tightly over the schools in the atmosphere, and then they all fall quickly to the ground when the buses roll up to school. The snowflakes fall so quickly, that, within minutes, the ground and the roads are covered in snow. During the play, students represented snowflakes, teachers, students, principals, custodial

JV Cadets suffer first loss at hands of Homeschool By Mike Schoeffel
Sports Writer
T
he Benedictine junior varsity boys basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 59-44, on Dec. 11 to the hot-shooting Central Virginia Homeschool Patriots. The Patriots got off to a kinetic start in the first quarter, draining two threepointers — one by Micah Williamson, another by Zach Grant — within the first four minutes of play to build a 9-2 lead. The Cadets weathered the Patriots’ electric start, shrinking the Patriots’ advantage to 11-8 by the end of the first period. The Cadets came out aggressive in the second quarter, resulting in a number of foul calls that were parlayed into points for the visitors. The Patriots played fundamentally sound basketball, converting four of their sixth free throw attempts to take a 28-20 lead into half time. The Cadets clawed back
into the game in the third quarter. Seneca Louis, Chris Dean and Eli Ottinger contributed points as Benedictine outscored the Patriots 13-9 to shrink the visitors’ lead to 3833. But a rough final frame would ultimately spell defeat for Benedictine. The Patriots were unstoppable from behind the three-point line, knocking down a trio of treys over the final five minutes to distance themselves from the Cadets. Another stat of note? The Patriots sunk their final six free throws. The Patriots were led by Zach Grant, who finished with a game-high 23 points. Grant was a steady offen-
sive catalyst, using his silky smooth ball skills to set create open looks for both himself and his teammates. Benedictine was paced by Louis, who finished with 16 points. The loss is the Cadets first of the 2014-2015 season. They won their first three games of the season, taking down Liberty Christian (44-34), Fork Union (57-44) and Bishop Sullivan (5958) before running into the Central Virginia Homeschool buzzsaw. The junior varsity Cadets will take a 25-day hiatus over the holiday break. They will be back in action at Fuqua School on Jan. 5. Tip-off time

Festive Fun and Fabulous By Bruce Chapman
A Christmas recipe of mini holiday taco appetizers is just one of many ways to bring a touch of whimsy to your table this holiday.
Flavorful finger foods can add zing to just about any holiday table By Michael Hastings Contributing writer
’T
is the season for holiday parties, and the parade of festive finger food is nearly endless. Linda Edmonds, a local reader, makes fillo-shell appetizers inspired by tacos with sour cream, olives and cheese. A slice of black olive on top gives it a nice decorative flair. I found a nice crabmeat spread with the requisite red and green colors — from cocktail sauce, bell pepper and green onion — in a community cookbook from the Atwood Acres neighborhood. The recipe comes from Peggye and Liz Higdon. I love smoked salmon at parties, and I came up with an appetizer that uses puff-pastry rounds as a base, with a little sour cream, lemon, capers, dill and optional caviar.
For something more substantial, I suggest warm pork tenderloin sandwiches. I created a chutney with cranberries and jalapenos — a really nice combination — that goes wonderfully with pork. “Christmas All Through the South,” a new book from Southern Living, has a recipe for bourbon-ginger punch garnished with lime wedges and maraschino cherries. Here’s a little secret: Create a nonalcoholic punch simply by substituting pineapple juice for the bourbon. For something a little sweet, I took another recipe from “Christmas All Through the South,” also with bourbon. Pecan-bourbon balls are easy to make without turning on the oven. Just combine nuts, crushed vanilla wafers and bourbon with a little sugar, corn syrup and powdered sugar. Then roll them into round little morsels of nutty goodness.
Mini
Holiday Taco Appetizers
Makes 15 appetizers 1 package mini frozen fillo shells 1 4-ounce container sour cream 2 to 3 teaspoons dry taco seasoning Shredded cheese, such as cheddar or Monterey Jack 1 can sliced black olives, drained (optional) 1 green onion, sliced 1. Thaw out the fillo shells. (Save the shells container if you plan to transport them.) Mix sour cream and 2 to 3 teaspoons of taco seasoning, depending on how spicy you like your food. Stir well. Refrigerate and let sit overnight for best results. 2. Fill the fillo shells with a spoonful or so of the sour-cream mix. Top with some grated cheese. Garnish with a slice of black olive and a bit of green onion, if desired. If you are going to transport these, pop them right back in their plastic container and box. Keep
refrigerated. When ready to serve, put them on a serving plate. Recipe adapted from Linda Edmonds Layered
