Capital One, GMS students partner to celebrate coding County school one of just two in region taking part in event Contributed report
Goochland Middle School students recently were given the unique opportunity to see technology in action, participating in an event celebrating computer coding at Capital One in Goochland. With a vision for providing students across the nation with opportunities to experience hands-on, authentic instruction in computer coding, Capital One partners with a handful of school divisions that wish to take part. Goochland Middle School (GMS) was one of two schools selected in the region. GMS teacher Karen Harden jumped at the chance to cultivate this experience for her students. Using a curriculum written by Capital One professionals, she co-taught coding lessons once a week throughout the first semester.

Reynolds introduces new hybrid nurse aide program Contributed report
J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College recently announced a new hybrid nurse aide education program, the only program of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A student who satisfactorily completes the course and then passes a national exam may become a certified nursing aide (CNA). There are many opportunities for employment for certified nurse aides in long-term care facilities, hospitals and home health agencies.
The new hybrid course will be offered for the first time in the Spring 2015 semester with a cohort of 20 students. Under the program, students will attend theory classes in person just three times – for an orientation session, a midterm exam and a final exam. The rest of the theory will be delivered online, making the hybrid course a great option for students who need to balance work, parental responsibilities and other obligations with their studies. Students also will be required to attend

Parks department earns honor for Goochland Sports Complex Contributed report
The Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department recently was honored during the 60th Annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society, held at The Homestead in Hot Springs. The Society paid tribute to the department for Goochland Sports Complex, which was
selected as the winner of the Best New Renovation/Addition –Parks, Playgrounds, Blueways, Greenways and Trails award in the population category of under 25,000. Recent years have seen the culmination of significant remodeling efforts to the exterior of the Goochland Sports Complex. The playing surfaces on the football and baseball
fields were renovated, irrigated and seeded with Patriot Bermuda grass. A new football press box was constructed and the current baseball press box received a renovation. Both press boxes now include a state-of-theart public address system and controllers for the new wireless scoreboards. The concession stand and bathrooms also
received a much needed face lift. The old tennis courts were converted to create the county’s first publicly managed skate park. The skate park was completed during 2013 with the addition of new skate ramps and landscaping around the park. “The excellence of the

Goochland residents Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda, left, Holly Lewis, Terry Hazelton, Margy Hazelton and Sharon Willms celebrated in the soon-to-reopen White Hawk Music Cafe.
Cafe continued from >1 Lyda. She, along with partners Tim Lyda — her husband — Sharon Willms, Holly Lewis and Ben Lewis, have known Hazelton for several years and had always joked that they would consider purchasing the business if he ever wanted to sell. Since the restaurant has been closed since Nov. 10, Nelson-Lyda said they are required to have a number of inspections and certifications completed, which could take around a month. They also are bringing in
new equipment and continuing to fine-tune the menu. Nelson-Lyda said she didn’t want to share too much about the group’s plans just yet, for the same reason they have covered the shop’s windows as they go about prepping for the reopening. “We really want people to be curious and excited,” she said. Nelson-Lyda said she and her partners were as disappointed as many residents when they heard the popular café and performance space had closed its doors after eight years in business, and actually
made an offer to buy the company before the end of that day. Their goal now is to offer something new and special for residents to enjoy. “We wanted to bring it back as a Christmas gift to Goochland,” Nelson-Lyda said, “and to ourselves.”

Dear Fern, I am hoping you can save my husband and I from a slow death by gastronomic torwture. My wonderful, intelligent, handsome, athletic teenage son has finally found the one thing for which he appears to have no talent whatsoever: cooking. Though he has thrown himself into this new hobby with a gusto that we truly admire, we are not sure if we can stomach much more of his creativity in the kitchen. The other day he fed us some kind of meat topped with mushroom foam (when did foam become food?!). Fern, it was awful. We can’t go on like this, but how can we gently steer him away from the kitchen without smothering his self-esteem? Dear Test Kitchen Mom, While you are growing impatient, your son is growing a passion for something that could serve him well in the future. He will have to fail many times to achieve the level of perfection that you (and he) may ultimately desire. But it will be the winds of your enthusiasm, not the gently nudging him out of the kitchen, that will determine the difference. Encourage your young chef by suggesting recipes that will work. Accompany him to the bookstore and seek out cookbooks geared for his age so that he can perhaps better relate to those cooking methods. Teen Cuisine, Sam Stern’s Cooking Up A Storm, or Clueless In The Kitchen are just a few that I have found. As your son is on his way to improving upon this developing hobby, remember that he is engaging in a healthy and rewarding pastime that will continue to lend him great enjoyment in his everyday life as an adult. “Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story” — isn’t that what they say? I know you can almost taste it! Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for her? Numbers offer new way of viewing the season By Roslyn Ryan Editor
You don’t need to be a math whiz to take a certain pleasure in statistics, and Christmas is especially fun to analyze from a numbers standpoint. Did you know, for example, that Americans buy around 30 million live Christmas trees every year? We also produce 1.76 billion candy canes, purchase 1.3 billion holiday stamps, and send 30 million pounds of mail to our troops serving overseas. Goochlanders have another Christmas-related number to get excited about this year: 143. That is the number of food insecure Goochland children who will be provided with meals this year thanks to a grant given by the Richmond Christmas Mother Program to the Goochland Community Foundation (GCF). When it comes to hunger in our community, the numbers are hard to hear. But, thanks to the partnership between the Christmas Mother Program, the GFC, Food Lion and one very generous county family, our community is a whopping $10,000 closer to making sure that no child has to wonder where his or her next meal is coming from. And that’s what I call a fabulous figure.

I’m not sure when this started, but there is no denying that the type of greeting we choose to offer this time of year has become a hot button issue. I think most of us can agree that no one has ever uttered the phrase “Merry Christmas” with the intention of offending anyone, nor do most of us say “Happy Holidays” in an attempt to strip the religious significance from the season. If you’re like me, you use them both interchangeably, mostly because it doesn’t feel appropriate to interrogate someone about their religious preference just to eliminate the very slight risk of causing offense. Imagine if Santa, at the end of “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” had exclaimed “Merry Christmas to all — as long as that’s your thing — and to all a good night!” It just wouldn’t have the same ring. If I were granted a Christmas wish (with the one condition that it be used for something ridiculous) I might wish that this argument would disappear forever and everyone would take holiday greetings in the spirit in which they were meant. Until that day, I wish all of our wonderful readers the most joyous holiday season, however they choose to celebrate it.

Letter to the Editor Group’s handiwork will mean comfort for kids in Goochland County Dear Editor, Stitchers for a Cause is a group of 25-30 individuals who meet every Thursday to make items including quilts and capes for children; pillowcases for children’s hospitals; and wheelchair and walker bags, which they donate. They recently crafted a special music quilt, which they designed and placed on display at the White Hawk Music Café in Goochland. They sold raffle tickets for this spe-
cial quilt and the winner was Cathy Combs of Virginia Beach. The decision was made by the Stitchers, and by former White Hawk owner Terry Hazleton, that the proceeds of the raffle be given to Goochland Court Appointed Special Advocate program (CASA). Goochland CASA is a group of volunteers advocating for children who find themselves in the juvenile court system through no fault of their own. This donation of $408 will be used for training events, since each advocate must participate in a 35-hour training program and then receive 12 hours of additional train-
ing each year. Goochland CASA is very grateful to the Stitchers for their dedication. They have provided individual, ageappropriate quilts for the advocates to give to the children in their cases. If a child has to be taken out of their own home and moved to a relative s home or to a foster home, they are given their very own quilt that they can keep, which makes the child feel special and loved — something that is so needed during such a difficult time. You find it in the strangest of places. As my family shopped for last minute presents last week in Williamsburg, I stumbled along behind my group almost unenthused by the hurried crowds, the busy shops and the constantly beeping cash registers. As my kids looked for more shoes, I noticed a coat that appealed to me so I took it off the rack and tried it on.
I took a quick look in the mirror and took the coat off and hung it up and moved on. As I began to look at other items, my son Jack appeared at my side with a question. “Daddy, did you like that coat?” he asked. “Yep it’s nice,” I replied. What followed left me speechless, but not tearless. “I want to get it for you,” Jack said. “I want to buy it for you for Christmas.” I’ve always assured my kids that the best gifts they can give me are the ones made by their hands, or painted with their brushes. It’s those gifts that provide the most value to me — something created by the hands of the children I love
the most. But, Jack’s act of kindness hit me right in the heart, for his compassion comes despite the great obstacles he faces in his life. His fight with muscular dystrophy requires constant attention, and everything he does in life requires more effort and more determination than most of us care to consider. His hope and optimism inspire my family on a daily basis, but his gentle kindness and true compassion never cease to amaze. With a prognosis that is less than optimistic, he finds a way to approach this world with understanding, charity and good will. Many things stand out in

Bulldogs keep title in holiday tourney Goochland holds on to defeat Louisa Lions 76-61 in third event By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
S
chool might be closed for the holiday break, but the Goochland High School gymnasium was a hub of activity last weekend as the Bulldogs hosted their third annual Holiday Tournament. King William, Louisa, Maggie Walker and Goochland made up this year’s lineup in an event that seems to grow in popularity each season. Bulldog coach Preston Gordon said that’s due to a great staff of volunteers and a dedicated group of sponsors and a community that supports the tournament. “All of the sponsors for the tournament have been great and make this tournament possible,” Gordon said following his team’s win over Louisa to capture this year’s title. In the opening game, Louisa defeated King William 66-36, earning the Lions a spot in Saturday’s final with its time moved up due to possible foul weather.
Maggie Walker jumped to a quick first quarter lead in the second game, but the Bulldogs outran the Green Dragons and secured a 68-48 victory and a shot at Louisa in the final. The final game featured a pair of traditional rivals, and Gordon’s senior-laden team didn’t disappoint an appreciative Saturday afternoon crowd with a 76-61 victory. Both teams came out running and played aggressive pressing defenses, a style that resulted in an abundance of fouls called in both halves. The Bulldogs opened leads throughout the game, but the Lions pulled close each time. Louisa’s pesky defense consistently forced turnovers and gave the Lions numerous fast break opportunities. “They are a good team and scrappy on defense, so I have to give them credit for forcing some turnovers,” Gordon said. “But, I thought our guys also played aggressive basketball and took a step forward with these two wins.” The Bulldogs only trailed once in a fast-paced contest, and closed out the Lions with a second half performance that featured strong on-theboards performance by Noah Easley. B.J. Snead capped his 21point Friday performance with a 25-point offensive display in the final that gained him the tournament’s MVP title. n the consolation game, Maggie Walker defeated King William

46-40. Maggie Walker coach Parker Kirwan said the win is a good way to enter the holiday break. “We were glad to win, but we didn’t make it easy on ourselves,” he said. “King William is a scrappy group and they never give up and we made a lot of bad decisions down the stretch.” The coach said his team has already improved on last season’s two-win total. “We were glad to get the win. “Throughout the first two weeks of the season, we’re already 3-5, and we’re looking forward to getting a lot more.” Gordon said his team’s two-day performance is an encouraging sign. “I thought these two tournament games have been an improvement over what we’ve done in the previous games of this season,” he said. “I thought we did a better job of taking care of the basketball and our guys played with a lot of confidence.” The coach also noted his team is conforming to a style he’s intent on installing. “We’re trying to ingrain in them the mentality of let’s play smarter and not always harder. Sometimes we try to do too much when we play too hard.” Gordon said Louisa presented a tough persistent challenge for the Bulldogs. His former team is in a position similar to the Bulldogs. “They are a lot like us,” Gordon said. “They are just waiting to get over that hump. They are great kids and will work hard for coach Wilson,” he added. Gordon thanked the sponsors, supporters, fans and volunteers who made the tournament possible. “We changed the time up a little this year due to pos-
