For those who might have noticed a well-dressed Union Army soldier aiming his rifle at a popular Goochland restaurant Monday afternoon, the scene must surely have prompted some confusion. Was it a one-man raid on Rocco’s Pizza? A pit stop by a hopelessly lost Civil War reenactor? In fact, it was neither. In this case, the “soldier” in question was Bruce Venter, vice president of the Goochland County Historical Society and one of the foremost authorities on the Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid, the ill-fated attempt to free some 13,000 Union prisoners of War and capture or kill Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Quick’s death now considered a homicide case By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Though investigators have still not released a cause of death for slain Waynesboro Police Reserve Capt. Kevin Quick, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller confirmed last week that the case is now being investigated as a homicide. Post 215 sponsoring high school students for Boys and Girls State Contributed Report

The American Legion (AL) and American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) from Post 215 in Goochland will soon begin the interview process to identify students for Boys State and Girls State. The ALA is interviewing junior girls from Goochland High School on March 19. The AL will interview junior boys from both Goochland High School and Benedictine College Preparatory in early March. Students are recom-

mended to the Legion by the school guidance staff and are referred based on their leadership abilities, academic performance, interest in government and service to others. American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are premier programs for teaching rising high school seniors how government works. The programs will be held the week of June 15 through June 21 at Radford (Boys State) and Longwood (Girls State)

universities. The students, while becoming self-governing citizens, will learn leadership skills and become active participants in developing a government complete with cities and officers. I am extremely proud of this honor and to be his editor.” While DesRoches has worked for The Darien Times since 2011, he got his start in journalism much closer to home as a staff writer for The Central Virginian newspaper in Louisa. Much of his success so far, however, DesRoches credits to his parents, Lynn and Carla Snoddy of Goochland and Paul DesRoches, a resident of Chesterfield.

“Without good people to raise me and show me the way, I’m not sure where I’d be today,” said DesRoches. “I’m quite fortunate to be surrounded by loving and caring people who have guided me throughout my life and enabled me to find my way.” Asked what kind of stories he most enjoys covering, DesRoches admitted a soft spot for feature writing. “I really enjoy meeting people,” said DesRoches. “I enjoy getting to know them and telling their stories.” Whether he’s writing features or pursuing more hardhitting investigative pieces, DesRoches said he’s simply happy to have the opportunity to do good work. “I enjoy the whole gamut,” he said, “I really do.”

When it, comes to the Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid, which will mark its 150th anniversary tomorrow, Venter has most certainly done his homework. He’s also put in the miles, traveling to at least a half dozen states over the past decade in his search for clues about why the raid turned into such a disaster for the Union. He has scoured libraries and archives, pulling whatever information he could from news articles, letters and even the diaries of soldiers who served under Kilpatrick, a man with deep political ambitions who would go on to run for governor of New Jersey after the war. Kilpatrick has often been vilified in the historical record — “a victim of bad press,” Venter surmises — though Venter’s research has shown many of the men who served under him held Kilpatrick in high regard. Throughout his years of research, Venter has gathered enough information about the man to feel almost as if he knows him personally. Asked what he would he would ask the General if he had the chance, he doesn’t hesitate. “I would ask him how the orders went askew,” Venter said. “And I think he would say that he had no choice but to allow Dahlgren to take part in the raid.” Dahlgren, a man widely seen as hopelessly ill-equipped for the mission he had been tasked with, was killed during the raid. The orders found on his body — with specific instructions to “kill Jeff Davis” — would help further embroil the raid in controversy.

Ceremony will mark capture of Union troops The 150th Anniversary Commemoration of James Pleasants’ capture of the Dahlgren troopers starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, and will feature bagpipe music, a color guard, an address by James H. To say that the KilpatrickDahlgren raid has played a significant role in Venter’s own life would be something of an understatement. Not only is it the subject of a book he recently finished — set to be published next year — it’s also the reason he chose to get married on Feb. 28 (his wife, as you might guess, is supportive of his research). Now, however, with the manuscript for his book finished, Venter said he’s ready to move on. “Oh, yeah, I’m done,” he said, explaining that other historians might be able to pick up where he has left off. “I’ll let someone else revise it,” Venter said smiling. “I’ll let them take a shot.”

Caution: Home repair underway By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In an effort to usher in the spring a little early — a consequence, I suppose, of too many recent days dealing with snow and slush — I have been busying myself lately with a few longoverdue projects around the house. In my opinion, the results so far have been good. Ask my husband, however, and he’ll say the results have been life-altering. And not in a good way. To be clear, I love nothing more than starting a good house project: Give me a few hand tools, a paintbrush and half a rainy Sunday and I will embark upon a home renovation mission that is sure to knock your socks off. That is, if I ever finish it. You see, when it comes to me and home remodeling, wrapping up the final details of whatever it is I’ve been working on never seems quite as exciting as getting started on the next thing. The siren song of repainting the guestroom bathroom, for example, recently managed to drown out the little voice urging me to first finish some work I had started in the kitchen. And this sort of thing, as you could imagine, tends to lead to problems. “Didn’t these kitchen cabi-

nets used to have doors?” my husband asked last weekend, frowning with concern. “And why is there paint on the dog?” Grudgingly accepting my story that I was letting the cabinet doors fully dry — and that the dog had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time — he retreated to an as-yetundisturbed part of the house and left me to my work. Sadly, this negotiated peace would not last. The particulars are not really worth delving into, save to say that there was some business about an overturned paint can in the shed and a guestroom toilet that may or may not have been found sitting in the middle of our kitchen floor. There were some ultimatums issued and a putty knife may have been brandished — I don’t really remember the details. But, as I write this, the cabinet doors have finally been returned to their rightful place, as has the toilet. And the dog is going to be just fine. As you embark on your own spring projects this year, I wish you the very best. May your paint primer prime perfectly and your ratchets always remain in reach. And may your marriages manage to survive all of your efforts none the worse for wear. Catching up: Kevin Hazzard In honor of School Board Appreciation Month, The Goochland Gazette has been featuring interviews with each of the county’s five elected school board members throughout the month of February. This week we caught up with Kevin Hazzard, who represents District 2. In addition to his service to the Goochland County Public Schools, Hazzard also has served on the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Board for the past two years and is currently chairman of that board. A native of Hanover, Hazzard has lived in Goochland for nine years.

On what inspired him to run for school board: Teaching in the Virginia Community College System for 11 years gave me a real passion for public education. Also, I have five Hazzard children who’ve allowed me to experience the public school system as a parent first-hand. I saw opportunities to make the schools more efficient and more focused on the goal of helping children maximize their potential in life, especially with respect to options for gifted education and Career and Technical Education (CTE).

The Tonight Show ended for me in 1992 when Bette Midler sung “One for My Baby and One More for the Road” to Johnny Carson on his final appearance of a cultural phenomenon. It was the end of an era in broadcast, the closing of a chapter when celebrity was at its highest point. No doubt Carson took his own longstanding advice and went out while he was on top. We often hear that some people are irreplaceable, but most times that proves to be untrue. No matter how important we or anyone else considers their own unique excellence, there’s usually someone waiting in the wings to prove us wrong. But, Carson was unique, and searching through the

Achieving transparency regarding finances and the annual budget has been the hardest problem to solve. Getting the right codes assigned to budget items has taken a couple of years to get right and we’re pretty close, I think. Having the correct accounting in place allows you to compare trends year over year, which makes it possible to understand the needs of administrators, students and teachers. Without that kind of accuracy and longevity built into the budget process, we just couldn’t know if we were spending the public money we’re given wisely. After two years, I think we’re at least 75 percent of the way to the kind of transparency that I sought during the election.

On who he looks up to as a community leader: My father Wayne, who is a member of the Board of Supervisors in Hanover County, is my role model. Growing up, he taught me to be truthful in everything and to use common sense to solve problems. He’s the most honest, hard-working person I know. As a child, watching him run his business, I learned just about everything I know today about listening to people and speaking with them on their own terms. He’s got a real genius for that, although he wouldn’t call it that. I feel like enough of that rubbed off on me to make me successful in business and in public service. see Hazzard > 7

None recaptured the excitement that might have been more of a product of its time than its appeal as an entertainment-changing event. To a generation of us, Johnny Carson meant sneaking in to your parents’ bedroom to a flickering black and white television set and hearing the sometimes softly off -core jokes by the subtle Nebraskan. His facial expressions sold many a bad joke, and Carson had a natural comfort on stage that made you feel you were part of something special. We forgave Johnny’s personal shortcomings, the four marriages, the reports of alcohol use in excess and other episodes. We didn’t expect perfection in his personal life, and maybe we didn’t even want that from a familiar class clown we all knew at some point in our life. And, even if a gathering around the Midnight Matinee with Art Fern wasn’t the most wholesome image of family entertainment, the jokes hit us all equally, evoking belly laughs. It was an era where celebrities weren’t shy about their status, and we didn’t begrudge them for their success. see Johnny > 15

When the volunteers of Manakin Company 1 Fire and Rescue kick off their annual Pancake Supper on March 15, the flapjack flippers manning the griddles will be carrying on a decadesold fundraising tradition. Company 1 has been hosting pancake parties since the 1960s, and the evening helps raise funds to help support their operation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Currently, the pancake supper is our biggest fundraiser,â&#x20AC;? event organizer Jennifer Napier said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The most tickets weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever sold was in 2006 when we sold 696 tickets. County free clinic makes life-changing difference for man with heart ailment Contributed Report

Cardiovascular disease, more commonly known as heart disease, is the leading cause of death in the United States. In Goochland County, the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services sees many clients with heart disease each month. Kevin Smith is such a client. Recently laid off from his job and without health insurance, Smith visited GFCFS with breathing problems and dizziness. These symptoms had plagued him for years and had been misdiagnosed and treated with the wrong medications. At the Free Clinic, Smith was correctly diagnosed with congestive heart failure, an unusual diagnosis for a 35-year-old. His heart was pumping at only 15 percent the normal rate.

At the Free Clinic, he received specialty care, regular check-ups and the right medicines to treat his condition. Smith now has a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), a mechanical pump that is implanted inside the chest to help the weakened heart ventricle pump blood throughout the body. The LVAD will keep him alive while he anxiously waits for a heart transplant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This device is what keeps me standing and gives me hope that I can provide a stable home for my kids,â&#x20AC;? Like many private schools across the nation, Collegiate has a strong tradition in the sport of field hockey. It just so happens there’s a little bit more history at Collegiate than there may be at most other institutions. And Karen Doxey, who has been the head coach of the Cougars for 27 years, knows Doxey

a Richmond Times-Dispatch article from around 1933 that talked about the founder of field hockey in the United States, Constance Applebee, talking about the sport to athletes at Collegiate. “Applebee brought the game to the [United] States,” said Doxey. “She was going up and down the East Coast, spreading the word about the sport. And that’s sort of how the game took hold over here.” Doxey recently added her own chapter to field hockey history at Collegiate when she was selected as the 4U/NFHCA South Region coach of the year. The honor was certainly well-earned. During

It was Doxey’s eighth VISAA championship since taking over the program in 1987. She also has 18 League of Independent Schools (LIS) titles under her belt with the Cougars. True to character, Doxey praised her players in lieu of taking sole responsibility for the sustained success. She also said she was humbled by the fact that it was an opposing coach in the VISAA that nominated her for the award. “It’s a really nice honor. It makes it so much easier when the kids buy into working hard. And that’s exactly what they’ve done since I’ve been here,” she said. “The award is doubly nice since I was nominated by one of my peers. That’s pretty

special when you feel like you have the respect of others on the field.” In addition to winning Regional Coach of the Year honors, Doxey also qualified for a National Coach of the Year vote, which took place on Monday, Feb. 24. Doxey didn’t win the award, but she said she was proud to be considered. “It would have been a very nice recognition, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to win it,” she said with a laugh. “There are many great coaches out there, and just to have my name mentioned in the same category as them is definitely an honor.” For Doxey to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the best field hockey coaches wasn’t much of a surprise, considering her accomplishments. see Doxey > 11

Coming off a big district winning victory against Amelia, the Goochland girls’ basketball team came out ice cold in the first round of the District 34 Tournament last week. Prince Edward took advantage of the early mistakes and put a 5-0 scare into the James River District Tournament champs before reality set in. Goochland erased that deficit and didn’t look back as they handed the visiting Generals a 64-12 shellacking to advance in

the tournament. “I don’t know if the game on Tuesday helped or hurt us. I didn’t feel we were focused on practice Monday or for the game Tuesday. Part of that was my fault because I wanted to use Tuesday as a practice type game to prepare for tonight,” coach Bari Nixon said after Thursdays conference semi final. Tuesday’s lopsided victory set up a rematch with Amelia, the loser of a 65-64 overtime thriller against the Bulldogs in last week’s JRD championship game. With that loss still fresh in the minds of Raider players, they came to Goochland fully focused on the rematch. “Amelia definitely came out with something to prove,” Nixon said. “We were able to withstand their intensity and athleticism at times. Benedictine blasts Pope John Paul Cadets win 81-64 on a fun-filled Senior Night Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

Perhaps one of the biggest perks of being the top private school basketball program in the state is getting the chance to play all of the seniors’ maximum playing time in the last home game of their varsity careers. The Benedictine Cadets used a 24-point third quarter to bury visiting Pope John Paul and bring the score to 63-44. The real story of the game, however, didn’t start until the fourth quarter, when two seniors who

With less than a second remaining on the clock, he was awarded two foul shots. With the students deathly silent, and perspiration pouring down his face, Baldecchi came close, but ultimately missed both shots.

She landed her first major coaching gig at Norfolk Academy as the girls athletic director, physical education teacher and coach of the field hockey and lacrosse teams. She joined Collegiate in 1987 as the director of athletics and varsity field hockey director. And the rest, they say, is history. “I always loved sports,” she said. “So, after deciding I wanted to be a teacher, I knew I wanted coaching to be a huge part of it. I couldn’t imagine teaching without the coaching aspect of it.” Doxey, who talks with as much enthusiasm about the sport as someone who just entered into the coaching world, admits that she’s seen some major changes come to the sport during her 34 years on the sideline. “Gosh, so much has changed

since I first became acquainted with the sport,” she said. “We used to have roll-ins from the sideline. Most people don’t even know that existed. There used to be offsides, like in soccer and hockey. Beyond the rule changes, though, the equipment has gotten better and the ball moves faster.” Doxey also said she’s seen the speed of the game increase drastically, partially due to better athletes, partially due to rule changes to expedite the pace of play. “Field hockey is a hard game to keep possession, but I’ve seen the possession game get so much better over the years,” she said. “Now there’s a self-start. Now you can dribble. It’s made everything so much more exciting.” “In the old days, it seemed like there was a whistle every 10 seconds,” she added. “Nowawdays you still get people who don’t understand the sport, complaining about how often play gets stopped. But, trust me, if they were to watch a game 20, 30 years ago, there would be even more complaining.”

Goochland advances to regional play this week, and Nixon isn’t sure what to expect. “I am not convinced that we are ready for regional play,” she said. “We had a great week last week knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seed. However, I am not sure we as a team understand the difference between regional and conference play,” Nixon added. The coach played her roster in the two-game conference tournament appearance. According to Nixon, that has proven to be a double-edged sword, providing experience but producing inconsistencies. “I hoped playing all of our players would give us an advantage. However, it seems when one player steps up, another player falls. It has been frustrating to get this group to play con-

sistently,” she said. Playing in spurts won’t produce wins as the competition gets tougher with each round, Nixon said. “We can be great for a couple of minutes, and then have two to three turnovers or mistakes the next couple of minutes,” she added. She’s also not discounting the team’s potential. “ I like that we have several different players that can contribute, that makes us a strong team and a team tough to defend.” Maximizing a player’s strengths and steady performances on both ends of the floor are key to the Bulldogs’ future success, or failure. “We are still learning that if you’re not contributing offensively, you have to contribute in other areas. We’re either really up or really down. The lack of consistency has hurt us in close games,” Nixon said. Regarding the chance of a third Amelia match-up in two weeks, the coach hasn’t closed the playbook yet. “My understanding is that there is a possibility we could face them again.”

ew would argue that this winter has been a doozy: bone-chilling temperatures, plenty of snow and slush and a grumpy groundhog up in Pennsylvania predicting plenty more of both. Fortunately, spring will soon arrive and with it the chance to get out in the garden. For those of us who don’t know the difference between a tulip and a tuber — or those who just want to pick up a few tips — several garden-focused workshops are slated for this month in Goochland. Here are three opportunities to get your green thumb going:

Extension Office offering Vegetable Gardening series

Homestead class looks at shiitake mushrooms

Workshop will teach how to take garden to new heights

Late winter is the time to start planning your spring vegetable garden. The Goochland Extension office has scheduled a four-session Vegetable Gardening series to be held at the Goochland County library from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The scheduled dates for the series are Feb. 27, March 6, March 11, and March 20. Topics include planning your garden, soils and soil amendments, common diseases and pests of all major vegetables, minimal pesticide use and more. A wealth of vegetable gardening information will be provided. A printed manual will also be available for an optional $10 fee to defray printing costs. Those wishing to take part in this workshop are asked to preregister by calling the Goochland Extension Office at (804) 556-5841 or e-mail sgrayson@vt.edu.

The Center for Rural Culture will be holding the second program in its 2014 Homestead Series from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 29, offering participants a chance to learn how to grow shiitake mushrooms at home. This workshop will discuss the techniques for growing shiitake mushrooms on logs in Virginia. Space and materials are limited, and the class fee of $25 is due at the time of registration. This class will be held at Rockcastle Farm, located at 745 Rock Castle Road in Goochland. For more information, or to register, call (804) 878-2166.

If you like the idea of gardening at waist height and avoiding the pesky salad-loving critters who usually dine in a traditional garden, the Goochland Extension Office’s upcoming Salad Table might be just the thing for you. With a salad table you can extend the salad growing season and grow leafy greens without straining your back. It’s portable, inexpensive to build and you can even add wheels. Participants in this workshop will learn an alternative method for growing leaf lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, radish, parsley, cilantro, basil and more. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at the Goochland Parks and Recreation Building (1800 Sandy Hook Road). This is a woodcraft project with a $45 fee to cover materials. Gov. McAuliffe announces grants available for Virginia agricultural interests Request for applications now open, deadline for submittal is March 21 Contributed Report

Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently announced that the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is accepting applications for USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Specialty Crop Block Grant funding. Agricultural associations, industry groups, communitybased organizations and producer groups that seek to improve the competitiveness of specialty crops in Virginia are eligible to submit proposals for grants up to $50,000 per project. VDACS anticipates administering nearly $600,000 in funds for the development of specialty crop projects. The deadline for returning applications is March 21. McAuliffe, referring to the grants, said, “Agriculture is Virginia’s largest industry, and I am committed to keeping it at the forefront of my administration’s job creation and economic development efforts. Utilization of these grants likely will yield positive long-term economic benefits for our diversified agricultural interests and strengthen the industry as a whole. I encourage producer groups to take advantage of this opportunity to apply for funding for projects that enhance the competitiveness of Virginia’s many specialty crops.” Specialty crops are categorized as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and nursery crops, including floriculture, that are not typically covered by traditional crop insurance. Specialty crops do not include standard commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, peanuts, cotton or tobacco. Processed foods are eligible as long as they enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. Specialty crop competitive grant proposals must be specific and explain how an association, industry group or organization will use the funds to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. Some examples include research, promotion and marketing plans, as well as food safety projects. In awarding the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant funds, VDACS will give priority to projects with the sole purpose of enhancing the competitiveness of specialty crops.
