Goochland Drive-In owner insists he is ‘proud’ to be showing the controversial film By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland Drive-In Theater in Hadensville is currently screening the controversial movie The Interview, making it one of the only places in the greater Richmond area for moviegoers to view it. To theater owner John Heidel, the decision to show the film, which was initially pulled by Sony Pictures last month, came down to doing what he felt was the right thing. “This is more Heidel about the right of American businesses to show a movie that customers want to see,” said Heidel, who admitted he was caught off guard by how upset he was over the move by Sony to stop theaters from showing the movie. With its storyline centering on a fictitious plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, The Interview was alleged to be the impetus behind a major computer hacking attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment. the Goochland chapter of Habitat for Humanity and Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS). He has helped build nearly 80 ramps for Goochland homeowners with physical limitations and so far this year has helped the Rotary Club of Goochland deliver over 100 loads of wood to help heat county homes. To GFCFS Development Director Adair Roper, Bowles is best described as a “volunteer extraordinaire. At any given moment in the day, “you will see him delivering

firewood to someone’s home and fixing their roof or windows to keep the cold out, Roper said. Bowles, a life-long resident who grew up in Goochland’s courthouse area before heading off to Virginia Tech and then a 27-year career in the Navy, likes to joke that he didn’t really know what work was until he retired. After retiring from his second career working for a Fredericksburg engineering firm in 1995, Bowles suddenly found that there was no shortage of needs to be met in his hometown. Stepping in to help rebuild a local man’s damaged home after hearing about the

project through his church, Bowles quickly transitioned into a role with Goochland’s newly formed Habitat for Humanity chapter. Twenty completed homes later, he remains an active member of the organization’s board. Bowles admitted with a chuckle that he was “a little embarrassed about the idea of being seen as an inspiration to others, and doesn’t seem to think the example he sets is particularly extraordinary. “Goochland is a very caring community, Bowles said. “I would say I find a real satisfaction in just being able to help people.

Despite research, disorder remains mystery to many Enjoying a meal around the table together is something many families take for granted. Goochland resident Lisa Mounayar, a mother of two, doesn’t have that luxury. For Mounayar, providing food for her children means

keeping in mind which foods will — or could possibly — make them very sick. And, sometimes, it means having to guess. When Mounayar’s son Alex, now 8, was diagnosed two years ago with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), Mounayar said she had never heard of the disease, an allergic inflammatory con-

dition of the esophagus that causes difficulty swallowing, heartburn and sometimes even vomiting. By the time her 13-year-old daughter Lynzy was diagnosed last July, she knew far more. She knew, for example, that it would take numerous endoscopies and biopsies for specialists to be able to tell which foods would cause problems for Lynzy. She also knew that the treatments both of her children might eventually need were not covered by her insurance. And she knew that, when it comes to EoE, there is no known cure. Often found in children but also diagnosed in adults, EoE is typically part of a cluster or other allergies affecting sufferers. Though awareness of the disease is growing steadily in the medical community, it remains largely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed. Explaining the challenges of navigating the often confusing world of parenting a child with EoE, Mounayar said the disease can leave many feeling helpless.

“It’s just so hard, because you want to take care of your children and you want to feed them — but you can’t, Mounayar said. Though doctors have managed to help Lynzy find relief by eliminating an extensive list of foods from her diet, Alex must get much of his food through a feeding tube. It’s an experience no parent should have to go through, Mounayar said. “My goal is to raise awareness of this disease, and to find a cure and better treatment for these children, Mounayar said. When Darcie Kuzik was growing up, she was among that class of children often

dubbed “picky eaters, the ones with stomachs easily upset by certain foods, and the ones with chronic gastrointestinal issues. Her parents took her to doctor after doctor, but no one was able to pinpoint why Kuzik often had trouble swallowing food, or why certain foods seemed to trigger reactions. Like so many others who suffer from EoE, Kuzik spent years being diagnosed with one condition after another and being prescribed treatments that brought only minimal relief. Finally being diagnosed with EoE as an adult was a revelation, Kuzik said. “I didn’t know what I was

Once Heidel heard that Sony had reversed its decision and would allow a limited release of the film, he knew he wanted to show it.

“I called my booking agent and told her I wanted to show the movie, Heidel said. “She said ‘Are you sure?’ and I said ‘Absolutely.’ The movie was expected to open Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Heidel said he planned to continue screening it until Saturday. He said a Sunday showing could be possible, but he had not yet made that decision at press time. For Heidel, the enthusiastic reaction his theater has received on its Facebook page

has already reaffirmed his decision to show the movie. “I would say there is a little pride there, Heidel said. “We’re excited about it, so we’ll see what happens.

Now however, both Kuzik and Mounayar insist that getting the word out about EoE — its symptoms and its treatments — is the key to helping those afflicted with it and, someday, to finding a cure. “We want people to know that they are not alone, Kuzik said. “This is a life-altering condition, but you can’t let it consume you. That’s the real challenge.

Kevin Quick, many who knew the Rockfish resident had already been mourning for several days. Virginia State Police would later confirm that several of those arrested in connection with his death were linked to the Bloods, a notorious criminal street gang.

Kevin Quick, 45, of Nelson County, was last seen about 10:15 p.m. at his mother’s home in Afton. He was on his way to visit his 4-month-old child and girlfriend in Albemarle County.

Mersadies Shelton, 20, and her brother, Daniel Mathis, 18, of Albemarle, are arrested at an Alexandria hotel and charged with the theft of Quick’s silver 1999 Toyota 4Runner.

Responding to “intelligence” suggesting that Quick’s SUV might have been in the area, investigators find remains they believe to be those of Kevin Quick in a timbered area on Old Columbia Road in Goochland.

Halisi Uhuru, 22, of Danville; Leslie Hope Casterlow, 49, of Manassas; and Anthony Darnell Stokes Jr., 31, also of Manassas; are brought into the Henrico County Jail on charges originating in Goochland County.

The site, located in the West Creek Business Park, was selected after a study by the Timmons Group determined the site has the appropriate space, topography and geology to support the needs of a potential data center, as well as access to a robust fiber network, large capacity water and sewer service and an excellent transportation network. To District 2 representative Manuel Alvarez, West Creek’s new designation will be particularly useful in highlighting what he says he and his fellow board members have known for some

County dedicates new Leakes Mill Park area Dozens of young soccer players and proud county residents braved the latewinter chill in early March to help dedicate Leakes Mill Park, a wide expanse of green space featuring the county’s first publicly maintained regulation soccer fields. “It was quite an undertaking,” Derek Stamey, Goochland director of Parks and Recreation and facilities manager, said, explaining that the project was funded in large part by grants, including a $250,000 award from the Community Foundation. The surface of the fully irrigated fields “is just amazing,” Stamey added. “I’m really happy.” see 2014 > 5

The people we met The following people inspired us in 2014 to reach higher, push harder, and give back Michelle Emann When it comes to raising money for the Goochland YMCA’s annual fundraising effort, Michelle Emann doesn’t just talk the talk. Starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, Emann took part in her third 12-hour bike-a-thon in support of the YMCA. During her ride, Emann, who teaches regular spin classes at the Goochland YMCA, “ t r a v elled” around 100 miles on her stationary bike, burning around 2,000 calories. “It does take a toll on the body,” she said of the ride, “but it’s worth it.”

Josh Rooke Over the course of the last six years, Goochland High School Spanish teacher Josh Rooke has inspired hundreds of students with the passion, creativity and enthusiasm he brings to the classroom. And on May 13, the school division offered a heartfelt and resounding “gracias” for his efforts. During a meeting of the county school board, Rooke was honored as the Goochland County School Division Teacher of the Year. Praising Rooke for his continued efforts on behalf of his students, Goochland High School Principal Michael Newman described Rooke’s classroom as one of the “most dynamic classrooms I have ever been in.”

Herb Delbridge To Rockville resident Herb Delbridge, honor is something best expressed in a big way — preferably with four wheels and a siren. Delbridge, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, is the proud owner of 1983 Ford diesel fire truck, a vehicle he recently had covered from top to bottom with depictions of those who have fought and died in service to their country. He has already taken it to several events, and it never fails to get a reaction from those who see it. His favorite thing to do is give veterans a lift in the truck. “It’s just wonderful when you see them up there waving,” Delbridge said. “They really light up.”

Thanks to this year’s treacherous winter weather, Goochland County Public Schools students had to wait just a bit longer to start their summer vacations. After missing 16 days of school due to bad weather, the call was made to add a week to the school calendar. The decision was made during the March 11 Goochland County School Board meeting. According to a blog post written last week by Goochland school superintendent James Lane, snow days had already cost the schools 87 hours of instruction by the time the decision was made to extend the year. Additionally, five twohour delays and two two-hour early release days had cost 14 more hours.

Relay group hosts ‘Luau for Life’ event Goochland Relay For Life celebrated its 20th annual event on Saturday, June 7, at the Goochland Elementary School track and field. This year’s event, “Luau For Life”, marked the first day-time Relay event in Goochland. This event had fun for the entire family, offering food, games and music available all day from teams and supporting vendors.

Black Money Scam hits Goochland A Chesterfield man was charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretenses after allegedly trying to scam a Goochland business. Jeramin Cordor, 42, was charged with attempting to use what has become known as the Black Money Scam.

Community raises funds in the name of GHS baseball player Though former Goochland High School baseball standout Cole Starke’s life was cut short by a heart ailment on May 25, those who knew the 19-yearold chose to turn the tragedy into a call to action. While many of Starke’s former Bulldogs teammates were left reeling by the news of his passing, there was also the almost immediate realization that they wanted to do something to honor both his memory and his passion for the game of baseball. The group eventually decided to embark on a fundraising effort with the goal of building an indoor batting cage for GHS athletes. The fundraising effort was helped by a separate memorial fund set up through the Goochland Education Association.

Supervisors adopt new strategic plan After a year of hard work, countless meetings and several in-depth information-gathering sessions with the public,

Former Central High School students rally to save building Through numerous public meetings and workshops, graduates of Goochland’s former black high school let county leaders know they didn’t want it abandoned. Questioning the county’s commitment to preserving the 60,000-square-foot complex once called Central High School, many spoke passionately during an early public meeting on the subject about the property’s historical — and personal — significance. “Central High School is one of the black landmarks in Goochland County, and it needs to be preserved,” said one woman, drawing a round of applause from the audience. The county, it seems, was listening: Repairs are now underway at the school, and the gymnasium is expected to be open for community use soon.

YMCA celebrates 10 year anniversary This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Goochland Family YMCA, a nonprofit organization that began with a simple but powerful idea — a strong, supportive community can help people build healthier,

happier lives. “This is an amazing milestone in our Y’s history,” Jay Shively, executive director of the Goochland Family YMCA, said. “Our Y has grown so much over the past 10 years in terms of membership, programs and outreach. But what has always remained consistent is our commitment to our members and the Goochland community. And I believe even greater things are ahead for our Y in the next 10 years.” To celebrate the milestone, the Goochland Y held a celebration on Sept. 28.

Goochland Tech bolsters Career and Tech Ed program When the current members of the Goochland County School Board took office in 2011, one of the group’s first goals was to ensure a challenging and robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program for county students. In October, the school system put the finishing touches on an $800,000 renovation to the building formerly known as the county’s Specialty Center. Now known as Goochland Tech, the 11,878-square-foot space boasts fully equipped areas for programs, including heavy equipment operation, carpentry and nursing.

There is room for students to study robotics, and one for them to train to be emergency medical technicians. And there’s another highlight: A gleaming state-of-theart kitchen and serving area for students in the culinary arts program. According to Bruce Watson, the director of career and technical education for Goochland County Schools, the goal of the increased focus on CTE is to provide students the tools they need to fully explore what they might wish to pursue after graduation. “When students graduate from Goochland High School, we want them to be college and career ready,” Watson said. “By increasing the number and variety of Career and Technical Education offerings, we are hopeful we can assist students with finding their passion so they will make wise choices for post high school opportunities.”

Winter weather meant longer school year for county kids

the Goochland County Board of Supervisors adopted a new strategic plan on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The move was the final step in the creation of a document representing county leaders’ goals for Goochland through 2018. Started in 2013, the plan includes five main goals and represents, according to a brochure handed out during last week’s meeting, “an overarching framework for the county’s work.” “What we want to do is make sure that we are providing the right services for residents in an accountable manner,” board chairman Manuel Alvarez said. While some residents expressed their concern during the public meetings that the plan was not aggressive enough, Alvarez countered that the lack of strong mandates was actually intentional. “To me, it needs to be a little bit ‘vanilla’, ” Alvarez said, borrowing a term he said he heard from residents during the public meetings. “Government doesn’t need to be dictating. We should be making sure that we have the right services in place to allow the community to achieve what it wants to achieve.”

In this kind of swindle, a con artist will typically approach his victim and explain that he has managed to smuggle a large amount of American currency into the U.S. The catch? The money has been coated in a black substance, which gives it the appearance of black construction paper, in order to avoid detection by U.S. Customs agents. The victims of the scam often don’t realize, until it is too late, that most of the “money” they have been shown is simply black construction paper. Cordor was apprehended after a joint surveillance operation conducted by agents from the United States Secret Service and the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office.

Bringing holiday cheer

Once again, year seems to have passed in a blink By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Oh, the things we forget. Last week, paging through a stack of Goochland Gazettes from 2014, I couldn’t help but marvel at all the things from this year that had already (after just a few months!) slipped from my memory. There were the photos taken at this year’s Relay for Life, showing participants embracing the event’s luau theme with admirable enthusiasm. There was the piece on Morgan Wagner, the Goochland resident who left last July to begin her Peace Corps mission in Guinea. And, of course, there were dozens of other stories detailing small slices of county life, from spelling bee winners to American Legion Post announcements. Coming across them was a reminder of just how fast life moves, and how much of it is already behind us before we even realize it. Of course, there were plenty of things this year that won’t soon fade from memory, and among them are some of the best — and worst — examples of what we as human beings are capable. In the latter category, few

of us will soon forget the ache in our hearts when news broke that Waynesboro reserve officer Kevin Quick’s body had been found in Goochland in January, or the bewilderment as the details of his murder were slowly revealed. But just as that event shocked us, there also were many examples of people rising above the challenges life had thrown at them and inspiring us all. Among the remarkable people we met in 2014 was Carolyn McCann, the Goochland women who recently completed a marathon in Athens, Greece, in honor of the daughter she lost to leukemia earlier this year. McCann’s courage and ability to persevere after being dealt perhaps the cruelest blow life can deliver made her a hero and an inspiration to many. Personally, I would count her among the bravest people I have ever met. While much of 2014 did not leave nearly as lasting an impression as McCann’s story, we hope you’ll enjoy taking a look back through our yearend recap on page 4. As we put this year — and all its highs and lows — behind us, we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Hope: A good thing for all of us By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I

t’s hard to be original when thinking of columns pertaining to or surrounding the holiday season. Readers can absorb an abundance of year-end wrapups or prepare that long list of resolutions (that few really keep). Most of us take a second or two as the new year approaches to remember and reflect on the events of the past year, the people who stood out in our minds or the changes that influenced our lives. I suppose a good year is one that includes a bunch of positive entries from the list above, but, sadly, that’s not the case for many. I’ve decided to forego the predictable versions of what is often termed a New Year’s column, and tell you a story that recently inspired me much more than I expected. Owen is a 9-year-old English boy who suffers from a debilitating genetic muscle disease that causes his muscles to tense and contract. It’s a painful and rare condition that affects only 35 other people worldwide. As his condition deteriorated,

Owen was forced to rely on a wheelchair for transportation. For a shy young boy, daily treks became difficult for him, and he didn’t like the way people stared at him. When asked how it made him feel, he replied with one word: “Alone.” Like any good parents, Owen’s parents turned to a tried and trusted solution, and began a search to find their son a canine companion. That’s where a rescue dog named Haatchi entered the picture. It was the hound’s eyes that immediately captured Owen’s mom’s attention. And Haatchi too had a story that involved disability and difficulty. He was found tied to a railroad track where he had been hit by a train, resulting in the loss of one of his rear legs and his tail. His condition made him almost unrescuable, but not in the eyes of

Owen. The two formed an immediate bond, a love Owen explains as a mutual understanding of each other’s disabilities. Owen doesn’t mind going out in his wheelchair anymore and reckons the people are now staring at his three-legged dog and not him. To the contrary, Owen and Haatchi took first place in the prestigious Westminster Dog Show in the Friends for Life category. Since then, they have captured numerous blue ribbons in contests throughout England. It’s an inspiring winning streak. “That’s the way we roll,” Owen said in a recent interview on ESPN. The simple reality that these two found each other gives me hope for a new year, and renewed belief that — in a world filled with desolution and despair — hope still reigns supreme. So, I guess that’s my advice for the new year. It’s a simple message that I recently learned from a little boy ... and his dog. Be hopeful.

Goochland celebrates new MCJROTC program On Oct. 2, 117 newly-minted cadets attended a ceremony to officially commission Goochland High School’s new Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (MCJROTC) program. The event, held in the school’s football stadium, was seen by many of the county officials who attended as a testament to both the diligent efforts of those who helped bring the program to Goochland and the courage of the first students to sign up. Goochland County school superintendant James Lane said he has already seen the impact of the program. “Even in the first few weeks, I have been so impressed by the new culture forming in our school,” Lane said. Lane called Maj. Michael Petruzziello and Staff Sgt. Daniel Strong, the program’s two leaders, his heroes.

Goochland Habitat group celebrates 20th home built Just in time for the holidays, a Goochland family received a brand new home of their own. Goochland Habitat for Humanity celebrated the dedication of its 20th home on Oct. 19, handing over the keys to the Scott-Prosser family. With the completion of the ScottProsser home, Goochland’s Habitat chapter has now built one house for every 1,000 people in the county, earning it one of the highest “homes built to population” ratios in the U.S.

Supervisors approve amended kennel definition Members of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a new definition of “kennels” during their monthly meeting in November. According to information presented during the meeting, the previous definition had been somewhat vague and left many local dog owners unsure of whether they were in violation of county rules. Under the new definition, a private kennel is classified as one with five or more canines or felines kept for the pur-

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County pose of hunting, working, breeding, selling or showing. According to the ordinance, private kennels are allowed by right in areas zoned A1 or A2, and can be maintained with a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) in areas zoned B1 or M1. A commercial kennel, which must be open to the general public with established hours, can only be operated with a CUP in areas zoned A1, A2, B1, or M1. This rule will have no impact on companion animals and the nuisance ordinance would still apply to all animals in either a private or public kennel. “This has been a long process,” Goochland resident John Payne said, “and you all have been listening to us for a long time. I think this is a wonderful start — maybe not perfect, but we can address that at a later date.” Addressing one resident’s concern after the vote had taken place, board chairman Manuel Alvarez pointed out that, while the current board could not prevent future boards from abusing the rule, the change will actually be a positive thing for county dog owners. “This is not a zoning matter,” Alvarez said. “It’s an ordinance that will help kennels, making them legal and offering them some rights and protections they don’t currently have.”

Turner retires after 36 years as Circuit Court Clerk Goochland County Clerk of the Circuit Court Lee Turner, retired at the end of December after 36 years of service to the county. She was honored by the Goochland County Board of Supervisors during its Dec. 2 monthly meeting. Presenting Turner with a resolution of recognition, the board thanked her for providing the community with “respect and sound advice” for over three decades. “After 36 years, I can’t imagine there is anyone in Goochland that you haven’t touched, one way or another,” board chairman Manuel Alvarez said after Turner received the award. Accepting her award, Turner said she was honored. “I’ve seen a great deal of growth in the county since I began years ago, and accomplished a great deal,” Turner said. “And I was able to do that because of the dedicated and competent staff I had.” — Roslyn Ryan

Cadets drop Capitol City Classic championship Cadets go cold in the second half, Connaghan drops 26 to keep Archbishop undefeated By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

T

he Archbishop Wood Vikings were 265 miles from home, trailing perennial state title contender Benedictine by two points with a little over two minutes remaining in the championship game of the 49th Annual Benedictine Capitol City Classic. The notorious Cadets’ student section was as wild as ever: Moments earlier, they had very nearly rushed out of the stands to harass an Archbishop fan who had been dancing courtside and peacocking a horned Vikings cap. This is the situation Tyree Pickron, a freshman for the Vikings, found himself in when he decided to take matters into his own hands. Pickron caught a kick-out pass from a teammate and drilled a three-pointer with utter confidence, putting the Vikings ahead of Benedictine for the first time all night, 47-46. He thrust his fist into the air and jogged back to the defensive end, right into the mouth of the now deathly silent student section. Seconds later, after a missed lay-up by the Cadets, Pickron sprinted the length of the floor and converted a layup of his own. Archbishop Wood (8-0) would never look back, escaping Rut Court

with a 53-47 victory and the BCCC championship trophy, despite trailing by as many as 13 in the second half. “He’s a freshman, but he’s been playing like a junior,” said Archbishop Wood head coach John Mosco of Pickron. “He had a lot of guts to take that [three point] shot, and the fact that he made it tells you the sort of player he is. He loves the big moments.” The loss had to come as a bleak surprise to the Cadets (8-5), who seemed to have the game locked up at halftime. They held a 33-21 lead at the break, went into ball control mode to preserve the advantage, and were ahead by 10 early in the fourth quarter. But coach Robert Churchwell’s squad was thoroughly impotent from the field in the final period, scoring only five points. The Vikings, on the other hand, reeled off 21, shooting a red hot 56 percent in the second half. “I told them at halftime to stick with the game plan and trust each other,” said Mosco. “We knew it was going to be a rowdy crowd, and being far from home we weren’t going to get a call. That’s life on the road. We survived the storm in the first half and kept believing in one another. It worked out in the end.” At the heart of the Vikings comeback was their ability to shut down C.J. Wiggins, one of the Cadets’ most prolific scorers and dangerous playmakers. While Wiggins managed to make a number of electric plays, he finished with only 11 points – well below his season average. No other Cadets shooter was able to step up and fill the scoring void, and that shortcoming ultimately became their downfall.

“We wanted to be in the lane to keep C.J. from penetrating,” said Mosco. “We didn’t do a good job of that in the first half. In the second half, we did. When we increased the pressure on C.J., he had to dish to his teammates, and fortunately for us they weren’t able to make many shots.” Archbishop Wood’s resident super star, Luke Connaghan, was at the peak of his game, scoring 26 quiet points, hitting both of his three point attempts, and sinking nine of 14 field goals. For his efforts throughout the holiday tournament, he was awarded the BCCC MVP. Cody Fitzpatrick also came up big for the Vikings: although he was only on the court for 20 minutes, he drilled three field goals from well beyond the arch, drawing the ire of the Cadet student section and the vocal praise of the Archbishop Wood bench.

After the game, Pickron, Mosco, Connaghan, Fitzpatrick, the peacocking fan (who rushed the court despite multiple pleas from the public address announcer for fans to remain in the stands), and the rest of the Vikings made the four-and-a-half-plus hour trip back to Warminster, Pennsylvania, located outside of Philadelphia. The weather beyond the walls of Rut Court was somewhere south of brisk, and the road ahead was long, but as Mosco pointed out, a win goes miles toward toward ironing out the pangs of a lengthy, late-night journey. “It’s going to be a long drive,” admitted Mosco. “But it’ll be a whole lot smoother coming after a victory.”

The Cadets led by 10 points after three quarters, but Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) stormed back to capture a 53-47 victory. Bottom, Benedictine’s Anthony Roberson (23) gets some air while going up for a lay-up. Roberson’s main contribution was on the boards, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds. He also scored six points.

Southern States seeking scholarship applicants for 2015 Awards offer financial help, opportunity for paid internship Contributed report

In 2013, Southern States Cooperative and John Deere Financial established a scholarship fund available to rising college sophomores pursuing an associate’s degree with a focus on agriculture. Applications for TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 ESPN

the 2015 academic year are now being accepted through Feb. 13, 2015. Up to five scholarships, in the amount of $2,000 each, are awarded annually to students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong individual character and significant personal involvement in agriculture. Following the completion of the academic year, scholarship recipients also will receive a paid summer internship at a Southern States Retail or Agronomy location. Students receiving scholarships for the 2014 academic year were enthusi-

astic about the award. “The scholarship has been a great financial help to me while attending college,” Lee Moore, a student at North Carolina State, said. “I also look forward to the internship.” Another benefit of the scholarship is an invitation to attend the annual Southern States Management Meeting and Product Show held in September. “The Southern States meeting and Product show was eye opening to me and it showed what a great company Southern States really was,” said Virginia Tech stu-

dent Holland Edwards. “The best part about it, I think, was meeting people from both the agronomy side along with the retail side of the business,” he added. For more information about the Southern States / John Deere Financial Scholarship Program, including requirements and application forms, visit southernstates.com/scholarship or contact us through email at scholarship@sscoop.com. In addition to the Southern States /John Deere scholarships, Southern States continues to fund a tradi-

tional four-year scholarship program through 23 land-grant universities in the Southern States territory. For more information, visit the Southern States scholarship information page at southernstates.com/community/ sponsorships. Southern States is a Richmondbased farm supply and service cooperative, which now has more than 200,000 farmer-members. The cooperative serves its members and non-member customers through 1,200 retail outlets in 23 states.

Grow your own way MetroCreative

Using adaptations, those with physical limitations can still enjoy the pleasures of gardening By Bonnie Garringer Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener

G

ardening is a wellestablished pastime enjoyed by millions of Americans every year. It connects us to the earth or nature. Winter months of cold and snow provide gardeners with time to browse seed catalogs, plan how they will plant vegetable and flower gardens and generally think about warmer weather. Spring garden renewals bring positive thoughts to our minds. The benefits found by many people varies from the enjoyment of growing beautiful flowers

to the satisfaction of putting vegetables and fruit grown by our own labors onto the table. Gardening provides exercise and relaxation. It can be an ongoing educational experience as different plants can be selected and grown each season. New techniques and practices can be tested with results that may be “interesting” or end with less than positive outcomes. Gardening can be an intergenerational activity which brings joy to relationships between children and grandparents as well as children and their parents. If you or a loved one has found gardening more of a

physical challenge in passing years, you don’t necessarily have to give it up. There are many adaptations being used by persons as they age that provide many of the benefits discussed here in a manner that allows them to continue to garden for many years. An adaptation is simply an action or device to allow you to continue an activity. Wearing glasses to read small print is an adaptation you might have been using for years. Gardening adaptations may include garden location and size, new hand tools and light weight hoses, raised beds, container gardens, salad tables, vertical gardening, and trolleys

and wagons to tote items. The size and location of the area used to garden is very important. Keep it small enough to be able to manage without becoming exhausted. One or two containers on an outdoor patio may be the correct size for someone using a wheelchair. A small space near the home which is accessible by a short, barrier-free walkway may work for others. Remembering the need to water occasionally means locating a near-by water source. Use of a newer light weight garden hose or faucet extending handheld device may benefit someone who uses a walker or cane. Some

tools are now made ergonomically correct for use by persons unable to manage the heavier, older models. Keeping them sharp will decrease the need to apply pressure with the hand and fingers that anyone with arthritis will appreciate. Raised beds are wonderful ideas for all gardeners but those having mobility issues will find they need to bend less and can even sit down to reach most areas of a 3 x 5 foot bed. Fewer weeds, closer visual access to plants and easy harvesting are all positive reasons to use raised beds. They can be simply built by a person handy with a hammer and nails, or purchased at local

13

garden centers. One favorite garden adaptation is a salad table. This is basically a garden box on legs of an appropriate height which allows access while standing or sitting. It is about 33” x 58’ in area and 4 inches deep. A mesh screening product is used to hold the soil in the table and allow water to drain out the bottom. A soil less potting mix can be used to grow vegetables such as spinach, kale and leaf lettuces. Save energy and steps by using a child’s wagon or garden trolley to carry tools, fertilizer or watering cans, from garden spot to storage. Buying bagged products in smaller, easy to lift bags may be a bit more expensive, but will be more useful to anyone unable to lift or handle a 50 pound bag. Storing products in plastic lidded containers and simply dipping into them for the needed fertilizer or soil amendment would be another choice. Vertical gardening consists of growing plants “up” instead of “out.” Cucumbers, trailing squash, beans and tomatoes can be successfully managed by fastening them to a trellis or some type of structure which requires less bending or can be accessed from a wheelchair. There are many other ideas for adaptations for senior gardeners or those persons with mobility issues. Don’t give up on gardening! Ideas and resources can be found in gardening books on the topic or on websites such as Virginia Tech’s extension service information. (www. ext.vt.edu).You may find them helpful to get you or a loved one thinking of ways to adapt gardening practices to your own needs and situation so you can continue (or start!) a most enjoyable and healthful pastime.
