SHELTER Goochland Animal Control employees are working to save pets, change minds
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Many Goochland Gazette readers first met county resident Carolyn McCann when she was training to run a marathon in Athens, Greece, in honor of her daughter Katie, who had tragically lost her battle with leukemia on March 16, 2014. McCann, who was recently nominated by Goochland Gazette McCann readers as one 2014’s most inspiring county residents, ultimately raised over $10,000 for the American Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and completed the marathon in November.

f your idea of an animal shelter is a dismal, sad kind of place, filled with unwanted and unadoptable dogs and cats, the staff of the Goochland County Animal Shelter is on a mission to change your mind. For the past year and a half, the shelter has been undergoing a rebirth of sorts. Shelter hours of operation have been extended to allow more potential pet adopters the chance to visit, and all animals now receive routine veterinary care and vaccinations. The shelter has even established a social media presence, regularly posting photos of its residents on Facebook. Perhaps most notable is the fact that, while the shelter did euthanize animals when space became an issue in the past, Animal Control Director Tim Clough insists that is no longer see Shelter > 3

The annual American Legion Oratorical Contest, supported by the Goochland County School System and teachers Neil Burch and Erin Yearout-Patton, will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in the Goochland High School auditorium. Each contestant will speak for eight to 10 minutes, giving an original interpretation of an aspect of the U.S. Constitution, emphasiz-
ing duties and obligations of citizens to the U.S. government. Each speech must be delivered without the help of notes or prompts of any kind, offering the students a speaking challenge as well as an opportunity to understand the Constitution. Following the planned speech, each student must then elaborate on an assigned topic based on previously identified see Contest > 3
“This is a very difficult marathon — uphill from about mile six to mile 20! The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training (TNT) participants from all over the U.S. and some from Canada, raised over $225,000 for the organization. I think over 50 participants were there.”
On why she chose to run: “When Katie was diagnosed, I immediately thought of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training (TNT) program. I ran my first marathon for them and they had a great see McCann > 1

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Lab pups up for adoption The Goochland Animal Shelter received a special delivery on Nov. 28, when a recently acquired lab gave birth to 11 puppies (two of which are seen here with Animal Control’s Tim Clough and Julie Lawrence). The pups —six girls and five boys — will be available on a first come, first served basis on Jan. 24, but an application will be required. The applications are available at the shelter and must be returned by Jan. 16. The shelter’s $10 adoption fee will be required, as well as the agreement of the adopter to get the dog spayed or neutered.
continued from >1 the case. “We’re really proud of what we’ve been able to do,” said Clough, noting that a look at the numbers underscores the progress the staff had made. In 2013, 67 dogs and cats were adopted from the shelter. In 2014, it was more than twice that at 137. Clough said the turnaround is due in no small part to the efforts of shelter coordinator Julie Lawrence. Lawrence, who has been working at the shelter for about a year and a half, has taken the lead on the social media front, and also has forged many alliances with local rescue groups. It’s these groups that will step in and help find homes for the shelter’s animals whenever possible.
Contest continued from >1 Amendments. The winner of this year’s contest will advance to the Regional meeting on Jan. 17. Winners of each level earn
Others have stepped in as well. Goochland veterinarian Lori Elliot has donated countless hours treating, vaccinating, spaying and neutering the shelter’s animals, and residents have provided a steady stream of food donations and financial support. In addition to the significant uptick in the number of pet adoptions, Lawrence said they have also seen a shift in the way people in the community seem to view the shelter. In the past, “a lot of people were scared to call us about a dog, or to bring in a stray they found,” Lawrence said, “because they assumed we would automatically euthanize it.” Now, she said, “people’s ideas are changing and we are doing everything we can to encourage that change. We really want people to come in monetary prizes and National winners receive financial awards up to $18 thousand. For more information, contact Doug Murphy at (804) 647-4684 or dmurphnet@ yahoo.com or visit the Post’s web site at www.goochlandlegionpost215.com.
and look around and see that the place is different now” While both Lawrence and Clough admit that it can be hard to say goodbye to the dogs and cats they house at the shelter — a recent adoptee, Buddy, had been with them for over a year (see page 2) — both know why they’re there and what their ultimate goal is. Even when it’s tough, Clough said, “It’s always a happy time for us when animals leave us because we are seeing them go off to a new home.” The Goochland Animal Shelter is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. The shelter is located at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane and can be reached at (804) 556-5302. Pets available for adoption can be viewed by visiting Goochland County Animal Control on Face book.

Ask Fern A Dear readers, January has dawned and I am taking down the holidays. By that I do not mean like a sumo wrestler taking down an opponent -- we already won that holiday battle with everyone in my home surviving the flu! Instead, I’m speaking of those festive teams of silver and gold, red and green. I’ve happily retired them and the number 25 for the next 11 months. Still, I miss the whimsically hung ropes of fragrant Frazier and pine that cascaded around interior archways like hallowed sacraments greeting every guest so royally. I also used these heavenly greens atop my mantel and casually draped them around my powder room mirror, which added such presence and was a kind of homage all around the house to nature’s way of giving. But I could not allow the house to feel as if all celebrations have been concluded or abandoned. We have a wonderful season yet to celebrate: Winter! I happen to love winter — it is one of my favorite seasons! The sight of new-fallen snow coming down is a peaceful magic that I dreamily look forward to. When it blankets and glistens atop our Earth, it stops me in my tracks to examine a busy life ... one that is cherished — especially on these slower, reflective days. We can all relish and give gratitude and embrace the gifts of winter by keeping the candles, candlesticks, pinecones and small white twinkly lights out of the storage bins and instead adorning our buffets, dining tables, mantels, bookcases and entryways. Into this indoor wonderland of embellishing, we may assign to rustic frames vintage winter scenes and photographs of friends and family skiing, sledding, playing a favorite board game, making snow crème or having one of those delightfully harmless snowball fights! And by keeping those kindling baskets brimming and an assortment of teas, honey and mulling spices on hand in our pantries, when see Fern > 12

A nod to all the useful things we no longer use By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In keeping with tradition, I spent last weekend attempting to fulfill my annual New Year’s resolution to finally “get organized.” And so it happened that I was in the middle of cleaning out my car’s glove box (which was filled with enough balled up receipts, old napkins and miscellaneous papers to serve as a de facto airbag) when I came upon a well-worn road map of Virginia. As I’ve mentioned in these pages before, I am an inveterate lover and collector of old “stuff.” Somewhere out in the shed behind my house, buried behind a bunch of more modern stuff, is a record player that no longer plays and a sewing machine that no longer sews. I also know somewhere in that pile is a 1938 yearbook from a school I never attended in a town I’ve never heard of, in a state I’ve never visited. So, you get the idea. Just for the record, I would like to clarify here that I am not a Luddite. I maintain a healthy appreciation for central heat, digital clocks and car doors that can be unlocked via satellite. I have an iPhone on my person at just about

all times and I rarely go a day without Googling. But back to the map. Wasn’t it only a month or so ago that I a friend and I found ourselves, in the middle of a long-awaited day trip, with two dead smartphones and no phone charger? Hadn’t there been much wailing and handwringing and wondering how we were going to find the place where we were heading? It is a testament to the Svengali-like grip of technology that I didn’t remember to check and see if I had a map in the glove box — it certainly would have come in handy. So many things that seemed key to daily life 20 years ago have now been rendered obsolete by computers that fit in our pockets. They are still quite useful, just unneeded, and, in the case of my old ketchup-stained map, underappreciated. And I can’t help but feel that that’s a shame. So, despite my freshly made promise that I would stop hoarding items that I no longer used often, I couldn’t help but tuck the old map back in the glove compartment. Finding your way may be a bit easier these days, but it’s nice to know you have a good, old-fashioned, no batteries required backup plan.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
www.goochlandgazette.com
Letters to the Editor Property owner in recent letter not actually a developer Dear Editor, This is in response to the recent letter to the editor “Businessman’s plan for property not in fellow residents’ best interest.” The county has required that the owner of two historic sawmills, Joe Liesfeld, secure a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) in order to operate his antique sawmills on his private property. There are two items in the letter that should be noted in evaluating this CUP fairly: 1. The two vintage sawmills were manufactured in 1938 and 1953. These mills are not capable of sustaining the type of “six days a week for 10 hours per day” operation described in the letter to the editor. Similar to old cars of their day that do not have catalytic convertors, air bags, heaters, or even seat belts, these sawmills are only capable of running within the limits they were originally designed 74 years ago. We love seeing a 1938 Buick cruising down the road even though the driver is not wearing a seat belt and his gas consumption is well below the new government regulations. Many feel the same way about old tractors, period trains, antique horse carriages, old steam engines, and antique saw mills. Our home is located on property next door to both of these vintage saw mills. The few trucks seen hauling wood products to and from both vintage sites to Route 6 pass in clear view of our home. We have yet to be bothered in the least by either period sawmill. These historic mills provide rare witness to a bygone era. 2. The letter referred to Mr. Liesfeld as a “developer” seven times. Mr. Liesfeld owns and operates a successful family business as a “site contractor.” Not to offend any developers, but there is a connotative difference between a “site contractor” and a “developer.” Anyone who has ever attended Field Days of the Past or the Rassawek Spring Jubilee will understand Mr.
Liesfeld’s passion to preserve and promote our treasured American culture. Both sawmills stand as examples of how hard-working Americans generations before us built this nation. Sawmills have been operating in Goochland for well over 150 years. Residents are encouraged to visit these working relics of the past. Kirk Johnson Columbia
School system’s move ignored parents’ rights Dear Editor: The purpose of this letter is to bring to the attention of the citizens of Goochland County an issue within our county that threatens to undermine the most fundamental principles of religious liberty and parental authority. In 1976 the Commonwealth of Virginia enacted a liberty-affirming law called the “religious exemption statute.” This law allows for a family to be excused from compulsory public school attendance if, “by reason of bona fide religious training or belief is conscientiously opposed to attendance at [public] school.” The intent of this statute is to protect families from being forced to violate their sincere religious convictions and put their children in public school. It has allowed families like ours to give our children a well-rounded Christian education unfettered by public school pressure or mandates, as was intended by the statute. Unfortunately, over the summer and without opportunity for public comment, the current Goochland County school board enacted a new policy that violates the state law and interferes with the right of parents to guide the religious upbringing of their children. The Virginia religious exemption statute gives families a right to an exemption from school attendance based on the religious training the parents are providing to the child—regardless of what the
child believes. The Goochland policy violates this right. The policy must be changed to reflect the fact that state law permits an exemption based on training alone. The new policy requires that when our children reach age 14, they must reapply and submit a sworn affidavit of their personal religious beliefs so the board can determine if they agree with their parents’ beliefs. The child is then subject to be called before the board to be interrogated about their faith. If the board deems their beliefs to be different from their parents’, the family’s religious exemption will be revoked. The policy thus arbitrarily decrees, in effect, that every 14-year-old is no longer being trained and is “on his own” spiritually. We know that is simply not true. When I spoke with the school superintendent about this issue he stated that part of the rationale in changing the policy was to allow the board to ascertain if a home schooled child really wants to be home schooled so that they, “can be given the opportunity to go to public school.” I hope the reader understands the danger implied in that statement. My wife and I were stunned by this turn of events, and contacted the Home School Legal Defense Association of Purcellville, VA. Our lawyer responded by reminding the board that we previously duly applied for and received from the Goochland school board and superintendent clear, unconditional acknowledgement of our right to train our children under the religious exemption, and thus there was no legal ground to require us to reapply or provide affidavits from our children. The board’s attorney replied that we have 30 days to submit the affidavits from our three older children, or we face criminal prosecution. We contacted our school board representative, Mr. Kevin Hazzard, who agreed with us that adopting a policy without ever giving those see Letters > 7

Goochland Historical Society Notes
RELIC RECALL Uncovering the forgotten stories behind our stuff What is it: Fragment from F8U jet plane Backstory: The impact left a hole 15 feet deep by 25 feet wide. On the evening of March 10, 1963, three F8U Navy jets took off from Andrew’s Air Force base in Maryland headed for the marine air station in Beaufort, South Carolina, but, unexplainably, one jet crashed in Goochland County. The crash site, located on Cardwell Road about 3 miles north of Crozier near First Union Baptist Church, left a hole 15 feet deep by 25 feet wide that sent wreckage and debris hurling threequarters of a mile away.
Shown below is a piece of the debris from the wreckage donated to the Goochland Historical Society. The Marine pilot, Capt. John V. Bancroft of Minneapolis, lost his life that day. Marine investigators report that before the Marine fighter jet suddenly plunged to the ground, the plane was flying normally with no account of trouble from Capt. Bancroft, who was in radio contact with the other pilots. However, multiple witnesses reported hearing the jet and seeing a “trail of fire 20 feet long” coming from the tail of the plane before the crash. Relic Recall is contributed by Ryan Dunn of the Goochland County Historical Society. For more information on the Historical Society, call (804) 556-3956.

The Curious Case of Robert Griffin III How the former Rookie of the Year went from surefire franchise savior to most divisive player in D.C. sports By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer
R
edskins fans know all too well what a difference two years can make. On Dec. 28, 2012, the Washington Post published an article entitled “Robert Griffin III emerges as the Washington Redskins’ leader despite rookie status,” which featured the following excerpt: “… there is little doubt, with all due respect to veteran linebacker London Fletcher, that the Redskins are Griffin’s team now. He wears a captain’s ‘C’ on his chest, an extraordinary honor for a rookie, bestowed upon him at mid-season. Especially on offense, but increasingly across the entire locker room, the Redskins take their cues from the 22-year-old superstar with the preternatural confidence.” Now, almost 24 months to the day, there has never
been more doubt about whether the Redskins are, in fact, Griffin’s team. It has been a tumultuous year for the franchise savior in limbo, the Heisman Trophy winner who brought lowly Baylor to national prominence and was subsequently selected by Washington with the second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. From an injury in week two, to a benching in week 13, to ugly losses to Houston, Tampa Bay and St. Louis, there have been few signs that the one-time pro-bowler will recapture the magic of an outstanding rookie season that saw him reel in Offensive Rookie of the Year honors (over, ironically, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson, two quarterbacks that have evolved into elite NFL players) after posting the highest passer rating of any rookie in NFL history and leading the Redskins to their first NFC East title in 13 years. Even with the whirlwind of negativity that has surrounded Washington’s $21 million man this season, he and the Redskins had a chance to regain a certain amount of solace during the final week of the season, when they found themselves in a close game against the division-leading Cowboys. Washington hung around for a while, but Griffin – who threw for a season-high 336 yards – tossed two cringe-
worthy interceptions in the red zone to expedite a 44-17 Dallas rout. With the lopsided loss, the fire surrounding “The Griffin Question,” as it were, grew exponentially hotter. How did it come to this? How did a man with endorsement deals, pristine standing in the public eye and Rookie of the Year/Pro Bowl honors (not to mention a reserved parking spot at an Arby’s in Richmond) plummet from the precipice of international stardom? How could a player that evoked so much hope within the Redskins fan base suddenly be viewed, by some followers of the team, as a malignant growth that must be removed to progress? Unlike stories of other fallen football idols, it’s relatively easy to pinpoint the moment it all started going South for Griffin. The date was Jan. 6, 2013. The Redskins trailed the Seahawks 21-14 in the fourth quarter of a Wild Card playoff game at FedEx Field. Griffin was in the shotgun and a low snap caused him to turn to his left and bend his knees to pick up the loose ball. In one grim instant, his right knee, which was already in a brace, bent at an awkward angle. Washington’s knight in shining armor collapsed to the turf in a heap. Partially torn ACL. Partially torn LCL. Out: six to eight months. “Robert Griffin III is down on the ground and can’t get up,” rang Joe Buck’s voice, tinged with genuine concern, over televisions across America. Washington lost the game, and there is little doubt that the first incarnation of RGIII – the toast of the town – perished at this juncture, and

A larger-than-life image of Robert Griffin III as it appeared at the Redskins training facility in the summer of 2013. At the time, Griffin III was at the peak of his popularity as the de facto savior of the Redskins’ franchise. He and the Redskins have since fallen on tough times, leading many to questions the former Offensive Rookie of the Year’s legitimacy as a serviceable professional quarterback.
the second incarnation – the anxious passer, the scapegoat – hobbled. In Griffin’s 16 starts prior to the knee blowout, he was confident and nimble, leading the Redskins to nine wins, including seven in a row to end the 2012 season. In his 22 starts after the injury, Griffin has looked slow and unsure – a husk of his kinetic former self – and Washington is a woeful 5-17. After an ugly loss to Tampa Bay in November, first-year head coach Jay Gruden was unabashedly critical of his fallen star’s lackluster play. “His footwork was below average,” he bellowed. “He took three-step drops when he should have taken five. He took a one-step drop when he should have taken three on a couple occasions, and that
can’t happen. He stepped up when he didn’t have to step up and stepped into pressure. He read the wrong side of the field a couple times.” Gruden’s pointed critique can be applied to Griffin’s performance throughout the 2014 season. The most crucial missing aspect of post-injury Griffin’s game is his once-legendary mobility. This phenomenon has been widely documented. In 2012, he ran for a rookie quarterback record 815 yards, breaking the 50-yard mark eight times in 15 games. He took a lot of sacks, but he consistently made plays few others could make and the Redskins were winning at a great rate, so that seemingly minor hiccup was swept idly under the rug.
Now that Griffin is no longer a rushing threat – only three 50-plus yard performances in his last 22 games – and the Redskins are losing, what once seemed like a minor flaw has grown into a major epidemic. In 2014, Griffin was sacked 33 times in only 214 pass attempts. According to an article by NBCSports, no quarterback has been dragged to the turf that many times in so few pass attempts since Hugh Millen back in 1992. It’s not that Griffin is getting poor pass protection — Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy weren’t sacked nearly as often during their brief appearances behind center. It’s that Griffin seems indesee RGIII > 9

RGIII continued from >8 cisive and unsure of how to play quarterback at the professional level now that his ability to run has essentially been eliminated. He’s in the middle of a nationally televised identity crisis, and whether he finds a way to transcend that crisis and come out the other side a serviceable-to-great quarterback is anybody’s guess. Public opinion of Griffin has shifted in a quick and dramatic fashion rarely seen in major professional sports, even in today’s “What have you done for me lately?” media culture. Sure, Griffin’s situation could be compared to the rise and fall of Tebowmania, but

back, possibly even a Hall of Famer. The fact that Griffin’s steep downfall has occurred with the Redskins, one of the nation’s most recognizable franchises, has only strengthened the microscope under which he has melted. Take a look at some Washington Post headlines from 2012 compared to headlines from this past year. 2012: “Robert Griffin III emerges as Washington Redskins leader despite rookie status” 2014: “Jay Gruden has seen enough of Robert Griffin III” 2012: “Rookies Alfred Morris and Robert Griffin III lead Washington Redskins to an NFC East title with win over Dallas” 2014: “Robert Griffin III
If Griffin is to return to greatness, a third RGIII, different from both the pre-injury Griffin and the post-injury Griffin, will have to emerge from the ashes and he will have to remake himself in the image of the two graduates of his draft class, Luck and Wilson.
very few people who claim to know professional football believed that Tim Tebow could be a quality NFL quarterback for an extended period of time. They quickly wrote off Tebow’s success as a half-fluke, half-media creation, and they were right. Griffin, on the other hand, was thought to be the wave of the future by many people in high places. Prominent individuals believed with gusto that he had the tools, both tangible and intangible, to be a great professional quarter-
trade has become lose-lose scenario for Redskins, Rams” 2012: “Robert Griffin III is NFL offensive rookie of the year, and it’s no contest” 2014: “Robert Griffin III in Washington: A meteoric rise, a precipitous fall” A meteoric rise, a precipitous fall – that pretty much sums it up. Now that Griffin’s descent from the mount of NFL royalty has driven him into the dirt – both literally and figuratively – where will he go from here? He has one year remaining on his contract, with an
option for 2016. The Redskins might be wise to test the market this offseason, while Griffin still has at least a smidgen of value as a resurrection project. By all accounts – including Gruden’s, who, as we’ve seen, isn’t afraid to critique the stillyoung quarterback – competitiveness and off-the-field problems are non-issues. Griffin is not, to anyone’s knowledge, throwing parties and causing himself and his teammates to miss team meetings or doing other immature things in his free time. Griffin, it seems, still has his stuff together, still has the desire to be great. It’s just a matter of whether he can find a way to succeed now that his surgically repaired right knee has taken away the one aspect of his game that made him such a unique talent coming out of Baylor. If Griffin is to return to greatness, a third RGIII, different from both the preinjury Griffin and the postinjury Griffin, will have to emerge from the ashes and he will have to remake himself in the image of the top two graduates of his draft class, Luck and Wilson. Ah, what a difference two years can make. Two years from now, at the end of the 2016 regular season, we will all have a much clearer picture of who Robert Griffin III really is, and what his legacy in the NFL will be. Will he return to the role of savior for a franchise in peril (either in Washington or elsewhere)? Will he fade into the murky mists of first-round quarterback busts with the likes of Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, David Carr, Matt Leinart and many others? Or will his fate lead him somewhere in between Hall of Famer and full-on disappointment, a la Carson Palmer? Only time will tell.
