Board grants CUP for sawmill operation Residents opposed to plan cited noise and traffic as problems By Roslyn Ryan Editor
After several hours of hearing heated comments concerning a Goochland sawmill operation, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Jan. 6 to approve a conditional use permit for the sawmill’s owner. At issue was whether to allow
Goochland resident Joe Liesfeld to operate two 1950s-era sawmills on his property at 6276 River Road in western Goochland. The conditions stated in the proposed application limited the operation to four days a week and imposed see Sawmill > 4

Local leaders get in-depth look at ‘sludge’ Issue has been riling residents concerned about proposal from Baltimore-based Synagro By Jodi Deal Richmond Suburban News
Members of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission (RRPDC) got an earful during a Thursday, Jan. 8, meeting on a local hot topic: sludge. As it pertains to the local discussion, “sludge” is slang for two substances – biosolids, or treated leftovers from the sewage treatment process, and industrial residuals, similarly treated leftovers from industrial operations like meat-packing plants and paper mills. The latter of the two has caused a regional stir, thanks to a permit approved in December that will allow Synagro see Sludge > 3

Fortunately, District 1 representative Susan Lascolette — the first woman in the county’s history to hold the chair of the board title and only the second woman ever elected to serve on the board — had an answer ready.

Sludge continued from >1 Technologies, a Marylandbased firm, to spread industrial residuals on about 16,000 acres of farm and forest land in Goochland, King and Queen, King William, New Kent, Prince George and Surry counties. Although the State Water Control Board signed off on the controversial proposal, the discussion isn’t over. Several members of the Virginia General Assembly, including Delegates Chris Peace, R-97, Lee Ware, R65, and Hyland “Buddy” Fowler, R-55, are patroning or copatroning pieces of legislation that would place an emergency moratorium on use of industrial residuals, call for further study of the substances, set up new systems of monitoring and require people selling land to disclose whether such materials have been used on that land to potential buyers. RRPDC commissioner Carson Tucker called for Thursday’s information session late last year. Commission director Robert Crum Jr. organized a panel of speakers, including a member of the Virginia Biosolids Council, a Henrico County wastewater treatment professional, a Virginia Tech soil scientist, a regional Virginia Department of Environmental Quality official and Peace. Along with the legislators, scientists and regulators, local officials who serve on the RRPDC heard from concerned citizens who have attempted to fight the use of both kinds of sludge. Peace and the sludge opponents rattled off a laundry list of concerns about contaminants in the waste products, from chemicals and heavy metals to bacteria and viruses that they fear will harm them if sludge is used as fertilizer in their communities. Jacqueline Hart of King and Queen County said she represents a group of worried resi-
dents and the permit approval process left many opponents feeling desperate because their comments and concerns fell on deaf ears. “I’ve been out to residents in your counties speaking to them,” Hart said. “Many of them are very concerned about their land values. Some are trying to sell their homes or are willing to leave their homes, because they’re very concerned about their health and feel like no one is listening to them.” Kyle Winter, the deputy director of DEQ’s Piedmont Region office who also oversees land application of biosolids and industrial residuals, said numerous comments received during the public comment period for the permit were not true or irrelevant. Many, he added, were taking issue with Virginia’s regulations, not the permit up for approval. “We cannot address that in a permit denial,” Winter said. “We explained to them they’ve got to change the law to do that. DEQ will enforce permitting requirements in the existing law and any future law. But my staff can’t just make stuff up as they go along in response to public comments.”
Making ‘sludge’ After trash, sand, rocks and other untreatable materials are removed from raw sewage and sent to a landfill, water full of dissolved waste is what remains, John Grandstaff, director of Henrico County’s water reclamation facility, told commissioners. Wastewater treatment plants use a multi-step system to separate the waste from the water, Grandstaff explained. Heavier organic material is removed by allowing it to settle out in sedimentation tanks, then the remaining water, still full of dissolved material, goes to biological stabilization, a carefully regulated enclosure where several kinds of microorganisms are introduced to the mixture.
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County “Must keep a variety of microorganisms very, very happy, because they are the guys cleaning the water – these guys see the dissolved waste stream as food,” Grandstaff said. Those organisms convert the waste to water, carbon dioxide, body mass and more microorganisms, he added. Once the process is complete, the solids are settled out and the water is passed through filters and disinfected with chlorine, then released into the James River. The solids that remain are treated with heat in oxygendeprived containers called anaerobic digesters to kill pathogens and odors. The gas released by the process is flared off and centrifuges are used to remove water, Grandstaff explained. “What’s left is a product that’s about 25 percent water and has the consistency of PlayDoh,” Grandstaff said. That’s what’s applied to fields. The only other options for disposing of biosolids are either putting them in a landfill, which takes up valuable space, or incinerating them, Grandstaff said. With incineration, he noted there are air quality concerns, extensive permitting processes and leftover ash products that must be sent to the landfill. Land application is cost-effective and it’s recycling, he added. “Agricultural application of biosolids provides Virginia farmers with substantial benefits,” Grandstaff said. The material provides nutrients, phosphorous and nitrogen otherwise found in commercial fertilizers. He added that using biosolids see Meeting > 7 Selling a House in Manakin-Sabot?

Lascolette continued from >1 “I had looked it up,” Lascolette said, and she decided to go with Madam Chair. “I wanted to keep it simple,” she laughed. In fact, deciding on the appropriate address would turn out to be the simplest thing the board would encounter during the meeting, which included a contentious public hearing on a proposed conditional use permit for a local sawmill (see story, page 1). The meeting, which began at 3 p.m., would not end until after 1 a.m. the following morning, but Lascolette insisted that she is never bothered by the occasional marathon session. “The way I see it, it’s a public hearing and [the board] is there to let the people talk,” Lascolette said. “They took the time to come to the meeting and they deserve the chance to be heard.” While she said she was personally pleased to be serving as the first woman elected

Alvarez on new board chair Susan Lascolette chair, calling it “another milestone in the board’s history,” Lascolette preferred to focus much of the attention during an interview last Friday on the fellow board members who elected her. Like three of the other members of the current board, Lascolette had never served in public office before being elected in 2011, and she credits the camaraderie the entire group shares for their demonstrated ability to serve effectively. “We have the best board,” Lascolette said. “Everyone is so kind, and so supportive … there is no fear of embarrassment. It’s having everyone’s support and knowing we are working as a team that makes it comfortable. When there’s an issue, we support each other, and we work things out together.” For his part, outgoing chairman Manuel Alvarez
— who made history himself in 2014 as the first Hispanic person to serve in the role — describes Lascolette as “a tireless worker and an excellent leader.” “That she happens to be the first woman to lead the Goochland Board is a great story and one more first for this board,” Alvarez said. “But it should not be a surprise to anyone who knows her.” Concerning her future plans, Lascolette confirmed last week that she intends to seek another term, but insisted that it will be her last. More than anything, Lascolette said, she wants to continue to serve both those living in her district and in the county as a whole. “I’ve had a great life,” Lascolette said. “I have time and I have my health, and this is my way of giving back to the community. That’s how I see it.”

Sawmill continued from >1 a number of other requirements, including obtaining all needed environmental, planning and safety permits. The controversial application had drawn strong opposition from some residents, including some who live near the site, who say the operation brings with it a number of nuisances, including increased truck traffic and intolerable levels of noise. The standing room only crowd in attendance at last week’s meeting appeared almost equally divided between those who supported Liesfeld ’s right to operate the sawmill, calling it a valuable asset to the community, and those who wanted it shut down, claiming the noise and other factors associated with the operation would violate their right to enjoy their own property. Each side also had legal representation, a fact which served to further underscore just how far apart both camps were on the issue. From the nature of the operation itself, to the potential impact on neighbors — and even on the issue of whether L’s mills could truly be classified as “antiques” — the two sides could find no common ground . Pointing out that much of the farm equipment routinely used in the county makes far more noise that the sawmill, Liesfeld’s attorney, Darvin E. Satterwhite, challenged the claim that approving the CUP would open the door for more
industrial development. “Certainly this is a use that fits in the A1 zoning ordinance,” Satterwhite said. “Promoting forestry in Goochland is an adequate public need and saves valuable landfill space,” he continued. “We’re not asking you to put up a paper mill — we want to process forestry products.” For the opposition, attorney Andrew McRoberts all but sneered at the idea that the mill had not created a nuisance for residents living nearby. “My clients know it’s a problem because they’ve seen it,” he said, adding the possible approval of the permit would be setting “a dangerous precedent.” “You are bound by your ordinances and you can’t ignore them,” McRoberts told the board. He also questioned Liesfeld’s assertion that the sawmills are antiques and can therefore be of value as educational tools. “There is a big difference between an old-timey sawmill and what’s out there,” McRoberts said. “It’s a mishmash [of old and new parts]. Just because you plug some old parts does not make it an antique.” During the board’s turn to offer comments, District 5’s Ken Petterson acknowledged that the residents who said noise was not bothering them and those who said it was “are probably both right,” and that a definitive answer on that question was likely not possible. Peterson also seemed to agree with the rest of the board
members that the restrictions put in place as part of the CUP would likely be enough to prevent the sawmills from becoming a nuisance. Saying that he had done a significant amount of research on the issue, District 2 Supervisor Manuel Alvarez said that he views the sawmills as an asset to the community from an economic perspective, since the timber industry is a key economic engine in the state. “I think it’s important to keep some of this industry in Goochland,” Alvarez said, adding that he also wants to make sure that people “who own land can make a living from it.” One change the board did make to the proposed CUP was to change the length of time before it would be up for renewal from five years to two and a half years, stating that this would ensure any problems that arose could be addressed sooner rather than later. Giving the final word from the board before the vote, new chair Susan Lascolette said that it was critical to consider the rights of property owners when making decisions like these. “I believe Mr. Liesfeld has the right to do this, but I do believe the neighbors have the right to enjoy their property. The issue is how do you mesh both of those.” Lascolette said she ultimately thought that, if the conditions in the CUP were adhered to, “we won’t have a nuisance issue.”

McDonnell saga unlike many cautionary tales By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A genre as old as storytelling itself, the cautionary tale is something that has served mankind well. It teaches us, by highlighting the failures of others, how best to avoid missteps of our own and follow a true and righteous path. Former Gov. Bob McDonnell’s sentencing last week brought a welcome end to a long, embarrassing saga, one that saw a family’s dirty laundry aired for all the world to see and surely forced many politicians to examine their own habits when it comes to receiving gifts. Just what the ordeal has taught us, however, remains up for debate. Obviously, as he stated, McDonnell made many mistakes that, in hindsight, look particularly egregious. And there are those who might be tempted to say the former governor’s story is simply one of a dishonest politician and a greedy, scheming wife getting the punishment they deserve. Perhaps, however, this tale can be counted as somewhat unique among all the others we have seen come out of the political realm in recent years. This story, I would point out, did not end with the shak-

ing of a fist at the sky and the vowing of revenge. In a world where there are more than enough Anthony Wieners and Joe Morrisseys, McDonnell’s trial and sentencing appeared refreshingly devoid of thundering self-righteousness and delusional grandstanding. By many accounts, McDonnell is a good man. Now he must prove that anew. McDonnell has vowed to rededicate his life to service and time will tell if he makes good on that promise. It will be the way he recovers from this chapter that will determine what kind of lessons future generations take from this cautionary tale. *** While it may not have made headlines outside the boundaries of our wonderful county, Goochland marked a historic milestone last week with the election of District 1 representative Susan Lascolette as the first female chairman of the county Board of Supervisors. Since taking office in 2012, Lascolette has proven to be a steadfast champion of her district’s residents and a powerful presence on the board. We are pleased to see her take on this new role, and wish her much success in the year ahead.

Letters to the Editor Many don’t look closely at Affordable Care Act Dear Editor, People’s loss of their insurance due to the Affordable Care Act has generated much emotional reaction. But no one seems to be asking why they lost the insurance. The goal of “Obamacare” is for people to have quality insurance. When the President said “You can keep your insurance if you like it,” he didn’t realize how many would like having inadequate insurance coverage. Many people like their health insur-
ance because it is less expensive, but do they know what they are paying for? Here is an example. My mother paid into one of these health care policies for 30 years. She was very lucky--no major incidents or diseases — so she didn’t use it much. As she got older she had more problems and needed insurance coverage for the 20 percent Medicare doesn’t pay for. Then we found out what was actually covered. Insurance statements continually came back with “0” coverage “not part of plan.” With the ACA her plan was one that was
rejected. We had to find another plan — yes it is more expensive, but now the bills are covered. How many people thoroughly investigate their coverage? Most people don’t find out what’s not covered until they need insurance. Let’s approach this issue with an open mind and look at the facts. The ACA could be amended to allow people to get inadequate insurance policies. But why would people want insurance policies that don’t pay the bills when needed? Judi Anne Sheppard Goochland
For Virginians, the time for serious ethics reform is now By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Virginians were saddened, but mostly stunned last week to learn that their former governor will be spending around two years in federal prison on corruption charges. In addition to tarnishing the state’s role as a corruption-free birthplace of conscientious politicians, the conviction has prompted Virginia’s legislators to take serious and detailed approaches to ethics reform. Virginia’s less than stringent rules regarding political gift-giving are sure to top the list of priorities when the General Assembly resumes its work this week. Just how to proceed with those beefed up measures might be the sticking point in a divided legislature that has not proven keen on compromise in past sessions. Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed executive orders shortly after taking office that limited gifts to under $100 and several bills solidify that position, but it’s unclear which one can gain consensus. Whichever form emerges from this session of the General Assembly will certainly be an improvement
from the state’s existing regulations, which some directly blame for the former governor’s problems. That’s probably a little generous, but there’s no doubt a vast plateau of gray areas made when and where to draw the contribution line more difficult. Other examples cited in McDonnell’s recent trial are less righteous and display a degree of arrogance and privilege Virginians don’t normally associate with their governor’s office. Ethics reform could present a bipartisan solution that should result in sweeping reforms endorsed by both parties. I’m not sure it will turn out that way. The problem is legislators are no different that any other group on the planet and asking them to place restrictions on themselves in like placing the proverbial fox in charge of the hen house. One low-level employee at the General Assembly hinted that McDonnell’s misdeeds that floated to the top of the political arena are only a slimy film at the top of a state where favors and gifts are routine for lawmakers. I have no personal knowledge of that, but common
sense tells me where there is smoke there is fire. That theory was reinforced last year when it appeared judgeships in Virginia are more a process of privilege than a search for the best candidate. With a state budget that is projected to come up billions short on the revenue side for its final year, there are plenty of issues that could force ethics reform into the back seat. And federally mandated redistricting, Medicaid expansion and education reform are issues that will receive plenty of attention in this year’s session. Hopefully, that won’t be at the expense of ethics reform. Virginians have long held their government up as a shining example of how it is supposed to work and updating ethics guidelines will go a long way in restoring those principles. As citizens, we demand that our elected officials are making decisions based on merit and information, and not because an expensive gift arrived at the Governor’s Mansion. We expect, and demand, no less.

Some of the metals and materials that are monitored – for example, arsenic and lead – may sound scary. But pretty much everything found in biosolids or industrial residuals can be found in commercial fertilizer or even untreated soil, he added. “I take more selenium daily as a dietary supplement then you’re going to find in a kilogram of industrial residuals from any of the facilities in question,” Winter said. “We’re talking about detectible quantities, but we’re not talking about dangerous quantities.” Virginia Tech soil scientist Gregory Evanylo agreed. “These are part of our life – they’re in the soil, in the trees, they’re part of geology,” Evanylo said. “We mine these materials to use them in our everyday lives. In high enough concentrations, they can be toxic to humans, plants, animals and fish, and certainly a problem for the environment, but years of research have shown levels that are safe.” The United States produces about 8.2 million dry tons of biosolids per year – that waste and what’s left from industry has to go somewhere, Evanylo said. Evanylo also urged the group to avoid equating the words “industrial” and “toxic.” If a product is leftover from an industrial process, it’s an industrial residual, he added. That can mean sludge, but it also can mean peanut hulls from a food processing plant or cotton left over from a cotton gin.
can save a farmer $300 per acre in fertilizer costs. Regulating industrial residuals Winter said a very similar process to the one that produces biosolids at wastewater plants is used to generate the kind of industrial “sludge” that the Synagro permit will allow to be applied to the land locally. The residuals will come from RockTenn’s West Point Mill, which makes rolls of linerboard and corrugated cardboard for boxes; Tyson Foods in Glen Allen, which processes chicken; and Smithfield Packing in Smithfield, which produces pork products. “This is not industrial waste being trucked out and dumped on the land out of 50-gallon drums,” Winter said. “There is nothing that goes into that wastewater plant that would not possibly go into the package you’d pick up at your grocer’s freezer.” He added that industrial operations processing -- in this case, paper pulp, fat, blood, meat and animal waste -- provide a very predictable waste stream, unlike sanitary sewage. Permits closely dictate the levels of heavy metals and other possibly harmful compounds that industrial residuals can contain, he added, and anyone who wants to put those residuals on the ground also must provide a detailed land management plan for how and how often the materials will be applied – usually, about once every three years at any given site. Notification of the locality, neighbors and DEQ is required before each application, Winter noted. “This is not a matter of someone indiscriminately applying this on a field as a Lingering concerns, means of disposal,” Winter said. legislation “This is one of the most heavily Peace said he’s digested a lot inspected programs DEQ has.” of science as he’s tried to wrap He added that permits have his mind around the industrial

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County residuals issue that has caused so much outcry in his district. He’s also gone to average citizens and farmers to “pick their brains” about the matter, he said. “We have an uphill battle, but I believe we are on the right side of this issue,” Peace said. “We must remember that we represent those citizens, not the corporations.” While the State Water Control Board did approve the Synagro permit in December, there were two dissenting votes, Peace pointed out. To him, he said, that indicates doubt. Peace also encouraged decision-makers to differentiate between biosolids and industrial residuals. Although similar processes may be used to create them, they are not the same thing, he said. “Industrial sludge, even when treated to reduce pollutants, can still contain heavy materials and germs,” Peace said. He added that some of the pollutants and heavy metals found in industrial residuals can cause “health problems, including cancer and brain damage.” Peace, who was accompanied by molecular biologist Lidia Epp of New Kent, said that, if approved, House Bill 1363 will put an emergency moratorium on the use of industrial residuals and will call for further study and tighter regulation. Meanwhile, House Bill 1364 will establish and fund a local monitoring program to help localities keep an eye on the activities. Epp told RRPDC members that she is skeptical of the science on which the current regulations for both biosolids and industrial residuals are based. “Science can be skewed to serve industrial needs,” Epp said. “Let’s be honest. We all generate sludge. It’s there. We have to do something with it. The bottom line is we just don’t know what to do with it to dispose of it in a responsible fashion.”
Leaders weigh in
Angela Kelly-Wiecek of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors asked what kind of action a DEQ inspector could take if they saw something amiss during a visit to a farm where biosolids or industrial residuals were being applied. According to Winter, that depends on the situation. If there’s a mess, the company could be asked to clean it up on the spot. Inspectors also can issue letters of warning or notices of violation. That said, he added that violations and problems are usually issued for improper storage or transportation – not at the farms during land application. Powhatan County supervisor David Williams asked Evanylo if there’s any consensus within the scientific community on whether biosolids and industrial residuals are safe. “I can point to researchers at other universities who do not share my same views,” Evanylo said, noting that he’s part of a professional organization for scientists who study biosolids and industrial residuals. “But I would also say that for the people doing research on biosolids across the United States, they are a minority.” Manuel Alvarez Jr., a member of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, thanked Peace for his legislation. His board attempted to weigh in on the Synagro permit early, Alvarez added, but didn’t get much response from DEQ. “We weren’t originally looking for them to stop this, but now we’re there, because we feel we didn’t get the proper hearing,” Alvarez said. Henrico County supervisor Patricia O’Bannon pointed out that a commercial fertilizer called Milorganite, which has been on the market for nearly 100 years, is actually treated material from a Milwaukee wastewater plant, and asked if local biosolids could be treated to make them suitable for sale. Evanylo and Grandstaff
www.goochlandgazette.com
agreed that they technically could, but said the treatment process would be more extensive, and, therefore, more expensive. Richard Glover, also a Henrico County supervisor, pointed out that the discussion of sludge involves dense science not easily understood by the layman. At a certain point, he added, most localities hire experts to deal with such matters then trust them to do their jobs. “In Henrico, we’ve accepted that they know what they’re doing,” Glover said. “I feel our citizens are very happy with what’s happening to their sludge. I feel comfortable with what we do and how we do it.” The Richmond Regional Planning District Commission is a planning agency that serves the Town of Ashland, the City of Richmond and the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico and New Kent. Elected officials and planning commission members from those jurisdictions serve as commissioners who govern the agency. Ribbon cutting continued from >1 plex — which had served as the county’s black high school during segregation and had fallen into disrepair in recent years — was being considered for demolition. Imploring the county to preserve and restore a building that had played a pivotal role in their lives, graduates of Central High School attended several public meetings and workshops held to help come up with a plan for the school’s future. Concerned about the cost of renovating the space, county leaders turned their attention to the more cost-effective plan of first renovating the gym. “Central High School has been essentially idle for many years,” said Board of Supervisors chair Susan Lascolette in an email last week. “Now, a committee largely comprised of interested citizens will contribute their ideas to bring it back to life. We have a unique chance to preserve the past while creating future opportunities. This is a very special project.” The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the school, located at 2748 Dogtown Road, in Goochland.

In Cross River Rivalry, ’Dogs rule supreme Goochland survives wild double overtime finish to sweep season series with Powhatan By Mike Schoeffel
Sports Writer
I
n a cardiac double overtime game that saw five ties and two lead changes in two overtime periods, Goochland pulled out a 79-77 victory over visiting Powhatan behind 25 points from resident sharpshooter B.J. Snead. Powhatan’s Joey Balcom finished with a game-high 34 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Bulldogs from escaping with an emotional victory. The win, coupled with a 6357 victory over the Indians on Dec. 10, gives Goochland the season sweep in a series that has come to be known, unofficially, as the Cross River Rivalry. “This group of guys are a close knit group and they play for each other,” said Goochland head coach Preston Gordon. “This team proved tonight that they will always stand tall and fight, especially when they have to overcome a few obstacles.” In what was a noticeably sloppy-yet-thoroughly intense game, Goochland (6-6) had an outstanding opportunity to close out a victory in regulation. They led 60-53 with less than two minutes remaining, but Powhatan rallied late behind some clutch shooting from Balcom. The four-year varsity starter made two free throws to bring it to 60-55, then – after a thunderous missed dunk by Noah Easley and a
sloppy Bulldogs turnover – sunk a three-pointer around the one minute mark to make it 60-58. Snead was fouled with 18 seconds left, and he converted one of his free throws to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead, setting up an opportunity for Balcom rescue his team from the jaws of defeat. With the clock ticking under 10 seconds and a defender’s arm fully extended in his face, Balcom pulled up from 5 feet beyond the arc and swished the shot, tying the game at 61. On the ensuing possession, Powhatan’s Marquis Lee deftly swiped the ball off the dribble and dished it to Logan Allen, who jetted toward the Bulldogs’ basket. With defenders on his trail and the clock under two seconds, Allen put up a fin-
the ball quickly in transition to get a good shot. I thought we gambled too much defensively, which really put us out of position and left us outnumbered.” The tables turned in the first extra period as Goochland became the team that needed last-second heroics to stave off defeat. After two free throws from Balcom, Powhatan clung to a 69-66 lead with 10 seconds remaining. Stunningly, Snead – one of the Bulldogs’ best free throw shooters – was fouled as he attempted a game-tying trey with nine seconds left. With the game on the line, Snead was cold-blooded, sinking all three shots. Goochland’s 11-piece student band – complete with a full drum set, a guitar player and a set of maracas – went wild a few

ger roll that looked like it was going to find twine and send the Indians across the river with their third win of the season. But the ball bounded off the glass, then off the front rim, and fell harmlessly to the hardwood, sending the game to overtime. “In my head, I was saying ‘Not again,’ ” said Gordon. “Luckily, the ball did not go in the basket...we kept stressing getting back on defense, and Powhatan was able to push
feet to his left. “Clutch free throw shooting was critical at that point,” said Gordon. “And he had ice in his veins.” Moments later, Balcom attempted to don his Superman cape for a second time, but both of his three-point attempts fell short. Subsequently, the game descended into a second overtime. Late in the fourth quarter and in the first overtime, the
Bulldogs missed several prime opportunities to put the game away by clanging a total of five free throws off the rim. In the second overtime, Goochland wasn’t necessarily more efficient from the line, but their timing was better. Five free throws in three minutes gave them a 76-71 lead with just over a minute remaning. “Fifty percent [from the free throw line] for a high school basketball team is not acceptable,” said Gordon. “I promise we will be shooting a ton of free throws Tuesday and Thursday...We have to block out the distractions, focus on the rim and our fundamental shooting techniques.” But, true to the back-andforth nature of the game, Powhatan refused to go down without adding one last dash of drama. With his team’s back pushed as far to the wall as it would go, John Harris drilled a surprise three to make it 7674 with 30 seconds left. After a free-throw by Goochland’s Colten Johnson, the Indians brought the ball up court with a chance to even the score. But some sloppy ballhandling – a theme that repeated itself at various junctures – sent the ball rolling onto the Goochland side of the court. Easley – who, coincidentally, missed a dunk at the end of regulation that would have essentially sealed the game for Goochland – scooped it up and slammed it home, putting a powerful exclamation mark on a win that gave the Bulldogs cross-river bragging rights for another year. “Beating Powhatan is a great win for us, and they are a dangerous squad,” said Gordon. “They are a win or two away from turning the corner, and they are on their way this season.”

Bulldogs hang tough in overtime loss Randolph Henry slips by Goochland to earn first victory of season By Jim Ridolphi
Special Correspondent When the Randolph Henry and Goochland girls basketball teams met last week, one of the two was going to emerge with their first win of the season. The teams’ winless records were not an indication of either squad’s intensity or dedication as they engaged in a hard fought contest eventually won by the Lady Statesmen, 33-31 in a thrilling overtime finish. The Bulldogs erased a five-point deficit with less than two minutes remaining to force the extra period. The Bulldogs’ tenacity and refuse-to-lose attitude was not lost on their coach, Dib
Oglesby. “I am very proud of the girls for how hard we played the entire game, especially coming from five down with less than two minutes to play to force overtime, and then tying the game up again in the last 30 seconds,” Oglesby said. “Obviously they were disappointed with the outcome, but the heart they showed can only lead to bigger and better things.” Sophomore guard Erin Wachter hit key shots that twice tied the contest, and junior center D.J. Lopez had 11 points and as many rebounds. The Statesmen applied constant pressure on the Bulldog offense, but the team responded. “I was extremely impressed with how sophomores Jordan Robinson and Nia Howell handled the pressure of such a tense game,” Oglesby said. The coach has noted measured improvement each game and is pleased with his team’s progress. “Six of our players are sophomores or freshmen, and are all first year varsity
