easles has been grabbing national headlines as an outbreak that began on the West Coast has inched its way across the country. According to Dr. Thomas Franck, Chickahominy Health District director, that outbreak hasn’t hit any locals. In fact, the last case he and his staff can find on record for the local health district was a Randolph-Macon College student who became infected in 1990, he said. Statewide, only 13 cases have been reported between 2009 and 2014, he added. As of Jan. 30, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 102 people from 14 states had been diagnosed with measles. Virginia has not yet been reached by the outbreak,

which has been traced to an initial exposure at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, California. Many of those who have been infected were not vaccinated against the disease, according to the CDC. The affected states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Washington. Of the confirmed measles cases in the United States this year, the CDC has linked 92 percent to the Disneyland-centered outbreak. “The absolutely most important way to prevent measles is by getting vaccinated,” Franck said. In Virginia, vaccination is compulsory for all schoolchildren unless their parents file for a medical or religious exemption. About 91 percent of preschool-aged children have been vaccinated before school entrance surveys, Franck said, and most of those who haven’t are identified by school officials and referred to a doctor. see Vaccine > 4

Vaccination continued from >1 The measles virus lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person, according to the CDC. The virus is highly contagious, and can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. After an infected person coughs or sneezes, the virus can live for up to two hours on a surface or in an air space. “That’s the nature of airborne diseases – they can remain suspended in the air for a long time, and people can catch it simply by breathing in that air,” Franck said. Measles symptoms generally appear within seven to 14 days after exposure, and begin with high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes, according to the CDC.

usage data. “Dr. Covington has been an integral part of this school and division,” Goochland High School principal Mike Newman said. “He will be missed, but we wish him the very best as he moves into this new level of his career.”

Christin East, coordinator of the Goochland Instructional Support Team, will serve as interim assistant principal while the division seeks a replacement for Covington. “We are thankful for the tremendous service Dr.

Covington has provided to the Goochland High School staff, students and families,” Superintendent James Lane said. “We have utmost confidence in the support Mrs. East will offer the high school during this transition.”

Within two or three days of the first symptoms, small white spots may appear inside the mouth. After three to five days, a rash of flat red spots begins to break out, generally starting on the face at the hairline and spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms and feet. During this period, a patient’s fever may spike to more than 104 degrees. People who are younger than 5 and older than 20 are more likely to experience complications from measles. According to the CDC, those complications can include ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, encephalitis and death. The virus also can cause pregnant women to give birth prematurely or have a low birthweight baby. If one person has measles, the CDC estimates that 90 per-

cent of those who are close to that person and unvaccinated also will become infected. In 1978, the CDC set a goal to eliminate measles in the United States by 1982 through widespread vaccination. The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) is administered in two doses, one administered at 12 to 15 months of age and the second at 4 to 6 years of age. The CDC declared measles eliminated from the United States in the year 2000, although actual cases in the years since have ranged from a low of 37 in 2004 to a high of 644 in 2014. Before United States measles vaccinations began in 1963, the CDC estimates that about 3 to 4 million people were infected each year here, with an average 400 to 500 fatalities in an average year, along with 48,000 hospitalizations and about 4,800 cases of encephalitis. “I’ve seen cases of measles in Indonesia,” Franck said. “I can tell you that it can be devastating.” He pointed out that one of the measles cases he witnessed overseas led to encephalitis. According to the CDC, each year, cases of measles are brought into the United States by travelers who are unvaccinated and live in countries where the disease is still prominent, and can then spread the disease among unvaccinated residents here. The CDC estimates that the MMR vaccine is 97 percent effective at preventing infection if both doses have been administered.

“The goal would be to get the whole world vaccinated, so that the whole world had herd immunity like what we have in the United States,” Franck said. “That could eliminate measles from the face of the earth.” The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics have taken a unified stance against the claims that MMR vaccinations are responsible for an increase in autism cases. On its website, cdc.gov, the CDC cites, among others, a 2004 report by the Institute of Medicine that concluded there is no link between autism and the MMR vaccine. “The bottom line is that the measles vaccination is safe,” Franck said. “There were concerns over the years about the link between the MMR vaccines and autism, and all of those myths have been debunked and proven to be false. There is absolutely no link between the MMR vaccine and autism or any other chronic disease.” The only published study that purported to prove such a link was eventually retracted by the journal that published it, and the doctor who wrote it lost his license to practice medicine, Franck noted. “All it takes is one research study that purports to show a claim of a problem to get things started,” Franck said. “Through the Internet, myths and rumors can spread like wildfire.” To read more about vaccine safety and studies cited by the CDC, visit www.cdc.gov/ vaccinesafety/Vaccines/MMR/ MMR.html.

Ask Fern A Dear Fern, For the past four years, I have been the mother of a perfectly wonderful little girl. To my husband and me, she is a dream come true, the child we always wished for. The thing is, since our daughter is adopted and is a different race than we are, we often get questions from people who are interested in how she came to be a part of our family. Fern, we are very happy to share our story and thrilled to tell people what a wonderful adoption experience we had. But sometimes people will ask or say things that I just don’t consider appropriate. My daughter is not old enough yet to understand how hurtful it is when people ask me if my husband and I ever tried to have “real children,” but the question upsets me so much. How can I respond to questions like this without seeming rude?

Dear Loving Mother, As you are privileged to know, a family isn’t made of blood alone. It’s made of special blessings! This is just one endearing, sufficient and polite explanation you could offer. While there are well-meaning individuals out there who will ask questions out of a need to express admiration for your choice to adopt, there are others who will pose more uncomfortable questions purely out of curiosity. You may choose to educate these individuals and even decide to tell them your beautiful story of adoption. You also may justifiably feel the need to end the conversation abruptly. Whatever you do, be careful in your response. Your child will be right there beside you in most cases, listening and observing your body language. She may be too young now to feel the gravity of rude questions or to know what people are saying, but, sooner or later, she will be able to comprehend every word. In the face of such insensitivity — by remaining direct but calm — you will be honoring her in ways that will give her the dignity and grace she will need to answer similar questions and to hold her head high in the future.

Commitment to readers cannot be overstated By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Let’s be honest: By anyone’s yardstick, it’s been a rough few weeks for journalism. For those who don’t closely follow the “news about the news,” the profession lost two shining stars last week in veteran CBS news journalist Bob Simon and celebrated New York Times columnist David Carr. Both of these losses occurred, of course, against the backdrop of the continually unfolding Brian Williams’ scandal, which continues to rattle many who saw Williams as the heir apparent to the 20th century’s journalistic giants. Williams’ alleged stretching and molding of the truth has left many shaken, and certainly served to further erode the trust of those who had previously questioned the integrity of the media. As we move further into 2015, we here at the Goochland Gazette would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to our readers and to restate our pledge to provide the highest quality newspaper for the Goochland community — every issue, every week.

It may not always be good news that we share, but you can rest assured that it will be gathered and delivered with integrity and fairness, and with a premium placed not just on getting it first but on getting it right. Both in print and online, we strive to tell the stories that matter to Goochland and to celebrate those things that make this community unique. We also encourage you, our readers, to reach out to us when you have a story idea, or think that we have missed something. One of the most wonderful things about journalism at the community level is the wonderfully broad scope of what is considered “newsworthy.” From government meetings, to school events, to bake sales, we make it our business to be there. As 2015 happens to be the Gazette’s 60th year of serving Goochland County, we are very thankful for the trust our readers have placed in us, and will continue to make sure our efforts are worthy of that trust. We may be small, but we are mighty —and we truly love being your hometown newspaper.

One quick question ... Goochland County Commissioner of the Revenue Jean Bryant announced last week that she will retire in December after over 23 years of service. We asked her what she has enjoyed most about serving the Goochland community for six terms.

“T

he best thing about Goochland County are the citizens of Goochland. t has been a pleasure to serve these great folks for the last 34 years in the Commissioner of the Revenue s office. When I think of the people of Goochland I think of Southern hospitality and good ol’ country folks. In this day and age of the hustle and bustle of everyone going about their own business and having so much to do, it is so wonderful to still have the citizens of Goochland that come to my office for assistance to see them relax when we smile and greet them and to take the time to listen when they need to tell us their problems or just get something off their chest. The citizens of Goochland are great people and deserve to be treated with patience and courteous customer service. I have strived to do this in my tenure as Commissioner Commissioner and helping the people is what I will miss of the Revenue most of all upon my retirement.”

A tribute to Albert Lewis Pyle By Knight Bowles Contributing Columnist

G

oochland lost a true patriot, church and community leader as well a highly decorated World War II veteran with the passing of Albert Pyle on Feb. 4. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1924, Albert joined the Army at age 18, four days after he graduated from high school. He was assigned to Infantry Training at Fort Walters, Texas, then to Fort Meade, Maryland, for further training. He was shipped to North Africa as a replacement and finally assigned to a replacement depot in Naples, Italy. Albert landed on the beachhead in Anzio on Feb. 4, 1943, assigned to 2nd platoon,Company B, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (also famous as the unit of America’s most decorated sol-

dier, Audie Murphy). Murphy later became a fellow platoon leader with Albert. The invasion of Normandy was June 6 and, after Anzio, the 3rd Infantry Division (ID) landed on the southern coast of France on Aug. 15. Albert was wounded three times, including on Jan. 25, 1945, when shrapnel shattered the bones in his ankle. He wore a leg brace for the remainder of his life. For his valor, Albert received the Silver Star (the nation’s third highest medal for valor) and the Purple Heart, America’s oldest medal. In addition, two of his fellow, Audie Murphy and Sgt. Sylvester Antolak, received the Congressional Medal of Honor. After returning home, Albert said, “I was extremely lucky and fortunate for having experienced so much fighting.” After being discharged , he went to work for DuPont in Charleston, West Virginia, and married Neva Tribble. In 1961, with his wife and two small daughters, he moved to Goochland while continuing to work for DuPont, and began farming on his 506-acre farm near

Columbia on the James River. Despite working two jobs, Albert became an outstanding farmer and leader in his church and community. He was a long-term member and elder in Byrd Presbyterian Church and served 16 years on the Goochland Planning Commission. For a number of years he also served on the county Economic Development Committee. After retiring from DuPont, Albert continued raising cattle on his farm. Maintaining his role as a good steward of the land, he placed his farm in a conservation easement several years ago, allowing it to remain a working farm forever. To assist his fellow farmers in promoting agriculture, Albert served the Goochland Farm Bureau as president, board member and member. Neva, Albert’s first wife, passed away in 1989 and in 1995 he married Margaret Stanley from Waynesboro. Margaret was a dedicated partner to Albert for over two decades, parsee Pyle > page 8

Seniors made their contributions Six set to graduate from Goochland boys basketball squad By Jim Ridolphi

Special Correspondent

W

ith a second match-up with Prince Edward looming when weather permits, it appears the Goochland boys basketball season is one game away from its conclusion. For head coach Preston Gordon, it’s been an up and down year. “I had some high hopes for this year,” he said. “We started out slow, then righted the ship, the fell back in to some of our bad habits.” For six players on the roster, this week is the last time they’ll put on a Bulldog uniform. Some have been associated with the program since their sophomore year in high school while others have spent a lesser amount of time with the team. Cory Alexander finished his career at Goochland with his leadership skills firmly implanted on his teammates. “Cory was a great leader, on and off the court. He was our guy who guarded their best offensive player. He’s our main defender,” Gordon said. After B.J. Snead went down earlier this month, Alexander has picked up his offensive game to fill in the gaps. “He has really stepped up for us,” said Gordon.. Senior Darius Morris played his most of his minutes at point guard, often providing needed

relief for starter Jayrell Myles when Myles was hurt of in foul trouble. “He was a great player for us, and had great games against Buckingham and Cumberland where he hit key shots from behind the arc,” Gordon said. “He’s the kind of guy who’s willing and ready to take care of business on the floor,” he added. Reggie Hobbs began his senior season on fire and showed the major improvement in his game that Gordon was looking for. “He worked hard to get where he was. He attacked the rim this year and was very aggressive with the basketball.”

“These players had great potential. We just couldn’t finish games and were plagued by turnovers for most of the season. I’ll miss these seniors.” Preston Gordon Bulldogs head coach

Hobbs was a co-captain on this year’s squad. “He’s a tremendous young man who leads by example. His actions speak louder than words,” Gordon said. Jordan Jefferson’s basketball

season ended before it started when the talented senior broke his ankle in a football game. “I was very upset when he got injured,” Gordon said. “We were expecting great things from him this year. At the end of last season, he was knocking down jumpers and grabbing rebounds, so it was a real loss for us,” Gordon said. Jefferson traveled with the team all season, and got to enter the final home game for several dribbles. “We wanted to do that for him,” Gordon said. Jayrell Myles was the offensive leader on this year’s squad. The second team All-District player averaged 10 points a game with five rebounds and two assists. “We designed plays for Jayrell because he’s such a versatile player. He’s got more than one aspect to his game,” Gordon said. Myles also has the intangibles that bring smiles to coaches’ faces. “He just wants to win. That’s what coaches like,” Gordon said. Zorian Thornton is the team’s thinker and was often involved in decision-making processes on the bench. “He was a fifth coach for us,” Gordon said. “He’s a phenomenal young man who is headed to college at Georgetown. “He has coaching abilities that you don’t see in most 17 or 18year-olds,” the coach added. Gordon’s team takes on Prince Edward in the Conference playoffs when weather permits this week and then it’s time for next year. “These players had great potential,” Gordon said. “We just couldn’t finish games and were plagued by turnovers for most of the season,” Gordon said. “I’ll miss these seniors.”

Jayrell Myles (11) has been the Bulldogs offensive leader for the majority of the 2014-15 season. Myles is averaging 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists per game. “We designed plays for Jayrell because he’s such a versatile player. He’s got more than one aspect to his game,” said head coach Preston Gordon.
